Description

[0001] Two-piece blank and box obtained therefrom

[0002] The present invention relates to a two-piece blank of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard, and a box obtained from folding such a blank.

[0003] As it is known, corrugated cardboard is composed of a fluted paper core sandwiched between and bonded to inner and outer paper face liners.

[0004] According to the prior art, any kind of box is produced from one or more specific blanks of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard in dependence on the intended use and distribution channel. Hence, the present trends towards multiple formats, smaller volumes and customization dramatically increase the burden on production lines for adapting to such different requirements. Discount retailers specify requirement for two-piece box designs to ensure fast opening in store.

[0005] One object of the present invention is thus reducing the burden imposed by such articulated and various requirements on the production lines.

[0006] According to the present invention, this object is achieved by means of a blank comprising:

[0007] - a chassis of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two first parallel crease lines, and a second and a third crease line intersecting said two first parallel crease lines , wherein said first, second and third crease lines define a series of a quadrangular rear panel, a quadrangular bottom panel and a short front panel, wherein said second crease line defines a quadrangular left panel connected to the bottom panel and two left flaps connected to the rear panel and front panel, respectively, and wherein said third crease line defines a quadrangular right panel connected to the bottom panel and two right flaps connected to the rear panel and front panel, respectively,

[0008] - a lid compression member of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two fourth parallel crease lines defining a series of a front lid panel, a quadrangular top lid panel and a rear lid panel, wherein:

[0009] - the front lid panel is glued to an internal face of the front panel, or

[0010] - the rear lid panel is glued to an internal face of the rear panel, wherein said fourth crease lines are parallel to said first crease lines.

[0011] A further subject-matter of the present invention is constituted by a box obtained from a two- piece blank comprising:

[0012] - a chassis of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two first parallel crease lines, and a second and a third crease line intersecting said two first parallel crease lines, wherein said first, second and third crease lines define a series of a quadrangular rear panel, a quadrangular bottom panel and a short front panel, wherein said second crease line defines a quadrangular left panel connected to the bottom panel and two left flaps connected to the rear panel and front panel, respectively, and wherein said third crease line defines a quadrangular right panel connected to the bottom panel and two right flaps connected to the rear panel and front panel, respectively,

[0013] - a lid compression member of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two fourth parallel crease lines defining a series of a front lid panel, a quadrangular top lid panel and a rear lid panel, wherein a perforated or notched detachment line is formed transverse to the front lid panel, and wherein the front lid panel is glued to an internal face of the front panel, wherein said fourth crease lines are parallel to said first crease lines, wherein the rear panel and the front panel with the lid compression member attached thereto are folded at 90° about the respective first crease line contiguous to the bottom panel, forming opposite rear and front box walls, wherein the flaps of the rear and front panels are folded at 90° about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines, wherein the left and right panels are folded about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines, so that the left and right panels are arranged parallel and externally to the flaps of the rear and front panels, forming a pair of opposite left and right box walls, wherein the rear lid panel is folded at 90° about the fourth crease line contiguous to the top lid panel, and the top lid panel is folded about the fourth crease line contiguous to the front lid panel so that the rear lid panel is arranged parallel and internally to the rear panel.

[0014] A further subject-matter of the present invention is constituted by a box obtained from a two- piece blank comprising:

[0015] - a chassis of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two first parallel crease lines, and a second and a third crease line intersecting said two first parallel crease lines, wherein said first, second and third crease lines define a series of a quadrangular rear panel, a quadrangular bottom panel and a short front panel, wherein said second crease line defines a quadrangular left panel connected to the bottom panel and two left flaps connected to the rear panel and front panel, respectively, and wherein said third crease line defines a quadrangular right panel connected to the bottom panel and two right flaps connected to the rear panel and front panel, respectively,

[0016] - a lid compression member of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having two fourth parallel crease lines defining a series of a front lid panel, a quadrangular top lid panel and a rear lid panel, wherein at least one perforated or notched detachment line is formed transverse to the top lid panel, and wherein the rear lid panel is glued to an internal face of the rear panel, wherein said fourth crease lines are parallel to said first crease lines, wherein the front panel, and the rear panel with the lid compression member attached thereto, are folded at 90° about the respective first crease line contiguous to the bottom panel, forming a pair of opposite rear and front box walls, wherein the flaps of the rear and front panels are folded at 90° about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines, wherein the left and right panels are folded about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines, so that the left and right panels are arranged parallel and externally to the flaps of the rear and front panels, forming a pair of opposite left and right box walls, wherein the front lid panel is folded at 90° about the fourth crease line contiguous to the top lid panel, and the flaps of the top lid panel are folded at 90° about the respective lengths of the fifth and sixth crease lines, wherein the top lid panel is folded about the fourth crease line contiguous to the rear lid panel so that the front lid panel is arranged parallel and internally to the front panel, and that the left and right flaps of the lid compression member are arranged parallel and internally to the left and right flaps of the chassis.

[0017] According to the invention, by changing size and marginal features of the blank, it is possible to produce different boxes satisfying quite different requirements.

[0018] According to the present invention, the performance of the cardboard or cartonboard used is optimized by using strengthening members where they are most needed and thus lightening the general structure of the box, which is thus fundamentally different from the conventional one due to the significant increase in performance.

[0019] The strength-conferring material is allocated only where it is needed, so that the quantity of fiber is dramatically lower in comparison with conventional chassis. Such a reduction is rendered possible by the use of the compression members which confer the required strength.

[0020] According to the prior art, the final box is produced from a blank or chassis, in the entirety of which the quantity of fiber and the board grade are adapted to the performances required for the intended application.

[0021] On the contrary, according to the present invention, the manufacturing of chassis of different board grades is avoided and the chassis can be produced with the lightest weight, whereas the satisfaction of different requirements is allowed by selection of the proper size and material grade of the compression members.

[0022] The gist of the present invention thus resides in the presence of the compression members, whose size can vary and provide the flexibility necessary for adapting to the different requirements with the lowest possible weight obtainable today on a corrugator.

[0023] Furthermore, the lid compression member creates a box design that can be erected and filled and closed without manual intervention. Moreover, the lid compression member is designed to ensure it remains attached securely throughout transit, but can be removed easily. The design is compatible with automated pick-and-place palletization systems because lid is secured to the pack and not a separate piece.

[0024] Further advantages and features of the present invention will be apparent from the following detailed description, given by way of non-limiting example with reference to the appended drawings, in which: figures 1 and 2 are exploded perspective views of a blank according to the invention, figure 3 is a perspective view of the blank of figures 1 and 2, figure 4 is a perspective view of a box obtained from the blank of figures 1-3, figure 5 is a perspective view of the box of figure 4 in open configuration, figure 6 is a perspective view of a tray from the box of figures 4 and 5, figures 7 and 8 are exploded perspective views of a second embodiment of a blank according to the invention, figure 9 is a plan view of the blank of figures 7 and 8, figure 10 is a perspective view of a box obtained from the blank of figures 7-9, figures 11 and 12 are perspective views of the box of figure 10 in different open configurations, figure 13 is a perspective view of two boxes as in figure 11 in stacked arrangement.

[0025] A blank (see figures 1 to 3) comprises a chassis 10 of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard and a lid compression member 30 of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard which can be of the same or different kind as the cardboard or cartonboard of the chassis 10. The flutes of the cardboard of the lid compression member 30 may be substantially orthogonal or parallel to the flutes of the cardboard of the chassis 10.

[0026] The chassis 10 has a series of two first parallel crease lines 12a-b, and a second and a third crease line 14a, 14b intersecting the two first parallel crease lines 12a-b.

[0027] The first, second and third crease lines 12a-b, 14a, 14b define a series of a quadrangular rear panel 16, a quadrangular bottom panel 18 and a short, preferably U-shaped front panel 20. As used herein, terms as "bottom", "back", "front", "top" and the like refer to the display configuration of the box which will be illustrated in the following with reference to Figures 5- 7.

[0028] Furthermore, the second crease line 14a defines a quadrangular left panel 22 connected to the bottom panel 18 and two left flaps 24 connected to the rear panel 16 and front panel 20, respectively. The third crease line 14b defines a quadrangular right panel 26 connected to the bottom panel 18 and two right flaps 28 connected to the rear panel 16 and front panel 20, respectively. The width of the flaps 24, 28 is preferably about half of the length of the portions of the second and third crease lines 14a, 14b defining the bottom panel 18. As used herein, the front panel 20 is designated as “short” in that it is, or comprises at least a portion (preferably, a central portion), shorter than the rear, left and right panels 16, 22, 26, as can be seen in the erected configuration of the box, shown in figures 4-6.

[0029] The second and third crease lines 14a, 14b are orthogonal to the two first parallel crease lines 12a-b and parallel to each other, so that the panels 16, 18, 22 and 26 are substantially rectangular, including the particular case of “square”.

[0030] The lid compression member 30 has a series of two fourth parallel crease lines 32a-b defining a series of a front lid panel 34, a quadrangular top lid panel 36 and a rear lid panel 38. A perforated or notched detachment line 34c is formed transverse to the front lid panel 34. This perforated or notched detachment line 34c defines, in the front lid panel 34, a preferably U- shaped bottom portion 34a and a top portion 34b separated by the perforated or notched detachment line 34c. At least one aperture 39 is formed through at least one of the top lid panel 36 and top portion 34b of the front lid panel 34, in order to facilitate handling.

[0031] As shown in figures 2-3, the front lid panel 34 is glued to an internal face of the front panel 20. More specifically, the bottom portion 34a of the front lid panel 34 is glued to the front panel 20. The fourth crease lines 32a-b are, therefore, parallel to the first crease lines 12a-b. A bottom edge 34d of the front lid panel 34 is contiguous to the first crease line 12b between the front panel 20 and the bottom panel 18.

[0032] A two-piece box B (see figure 4), in particular a shelf ready container, is obtained from the previously disclosed blank by substantially conventional automatized methods of folding, possibly providing also for using, if necessary, glue and / or adhesive tape.

[0033] In particular, one of such methods provides for:

[0034] - folding the rear panel 16, and the front panel 20 with the lid compression member 30 attached thereto, at 90° about the respective first crease line 12a, 12b contiguous to the bottom panel 18, so as a pair of opposite rear and front box walls is formed,

[0035] - folding the flaps 24, 28 of the rear and front panels 16, 20 at 90° about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines 14a, 14b,

[0036] - folding the left and right panels 22, 26 about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines 14a, 14b, so that the left and right panels 22, 26 are arranged parallel and externally to the flaps 24, 28 of the rear and front panels 16, 20, forming a pair of opposite left and right box walls,

[0037] - folding the rear lid panel 38 at 90° about the fourth crease line 32b contiguous to the top lid panel 26, and folding the top lid panel 36 about the fourth crease line 32a contiguous to the front lid panel 34 so that the rear lid panel 38 is arranged parallel and internally to the rear panel 16.

[0038] The front and rear walls of the box are reinforced by the lid compression member 30. The bottom edges 34d and 38d of the front lid panel 34 and the rear lid panel 38, respectively, are configured to rest on the bottom panel 18.

[0039] A pulling action can be exerted on the lid compression member by gripping on the apertures 39 formed in the lid compression member 30. Consequently, a removable portion of the lid compression member 30, formed by the top portion 34b of the front lid panel 34, the top lid panel 26 and the rear lid panel 38 gets detached from the bottom portion 34a of the front lid panel 34 as a result of the laceration of the perforated or notched detachment line 34c, while this bottom portion 34a remains attached to the inner face of the front panel 20. At the same time, the box B splits into two parts, a tray T and a lid L, as a result of the complete laceration of the perforated or notched detachment line 34c.

[0040] The lid L of the box can be removed, while the tray T serves as a display for the articles contained therein (not shown).

[0041] Figures 7-9 and 10 illustrate a second embodiment of blank and box, respectively, wherein features equal or equivalent to the ones disclosed with reference to the embodiment of the previous figures have the same reference number.

[0042] A blank (see figures 7 to 9) comprises a chassis 10 of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard and a lid compression member 30 of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard which can be of the same or different kind as the cardboard or cartonboard of the chassis 10. The flutes of the cardboard of the lid compression member 30 may be substantially orthogonal or parallel to the flutes of the cardboard of the chassis 10.

[0043] The chassis 10 has a series of two first parallel crease lines 12a-b, and a second and a third crease line 14a, 14b intersecting the two first parallel crease lines 12a-b.

[0044] The first, second and third crease lines 12a-b, 14a, 14b define a series of a quadrangular rear panel 16, a quadrangular bottom panel 18 and a short, preferably U-shaped front panel 20.

[0045] Furthermore, the second crease line 14a defines a quadrangular left panel 22 connected to the bottom panel 18 and two left flaps 24 connected to the rear panel 16 and front panel 20, respectively. The third crease line 14b defines a quadrangular right panel 26 connected to the bottom panel 18 and two right flaps 28 connected to the rear panel 16 and front panel 20, respectively.

[0046] The second and third crease lines 14a, 14b are orthogonal to the two first parallel crease lines 12a-b and parallel to each other, so that the panels 16, 18, 22 and 26 are substantially rectangular, including the particular case of “square”.

[0047] As used herein, the front panel 20 is designated as “short” in that it is, or comprises at least a portion, shorter than the rear, left and right panels 16, 22, 26, as can be seen in the erected configuration of the box, shown in figures 10-13.

[0048] At least one stacking cut-out 29a is formed in correspondence of a proximal side of at least one of said rear panel 16, left panel 22 and right panel 26, contiguous to the bottom panel 18, and at least one stacking tab 29b is formed in correspondence of a distal edge of at least one of said rear panel 16, left panel 22 and right panel 26.

[0049] The lid compression member 30 has a series of two fourth parallel crease lines 32a-b defining a series of a front lid panel 34, a quadrangular top lid panel 36 and a rear lid panel 38. A perforated or notched detachment line 36c is formed transverse to the top lid panel 36. This perforated or notched detachment line 36c defines, in the top lid panel 36, a front portion 36a and a rear portion 36b separated by the perforated or notched detachment line 36c. At least one aperture 39 is formed through at least one of the rear portion 36b of the top lid panel 36 and the front lid panel 34, in order to facilitate handling. A further perforated or notched detachment line 36d is formed in correspondence of and along the fourth crease line 32b contiguous to the rear lid panel 38.

[0050] Furthermore, the lid compression member 30 has a fifth and a sixth crease line 44a, 44b intersecting the two fourth parallel crease lines 32a-b. The fifth crease line 44a defines a left flap 46 connected to the top lid panel 36. The sixth crease line 44b defines a right flap 48 connected to the top lid panel 36.

[0051] The fifth and sixth crease lines 44a, 44b are orthogonal to the two fourth parallel crease lines 32a-b.

[0052] At least one stacking cut-out 49a is formed in correspondence of a distal edge of at least one of said rear lid panel 38, left flap 46 and right flap 48.

[0053] As shown in figures 8-9, the rear lid panel 38 is glued to an internal face of the rear panel 16. The fourth crease lines 32a-b are, therefore, parallel to the first crease lines 12a-b. A bottom edge 38d of the rear lid panel 38 is contiguous to the first crease line 12a between the rear panel 16 and the bottom panel 18.

[0054] A two-piece box B (see figure 10), in particular a stackable shelf ready container, is obtained from the previously disclosed blank by substantially conventional automatized methods of folding, possibly providing also for using, if necessary, glue and / or adhesive tape.

[0055] In particular, one of such methods provides for:

[0056] - folding the front panel 20, and the rear panel 16 with the lid compression member 30 attached thereto, at 90° about the respective first crease line 12b, 12a contiguous to the bottom panel 18, so as a pair of opposite rear and front box walls is formed,

[0057] - folding the flaps 24, 28 of the rear and front panels 16, 20 at 90° about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines 14a, 14b,

[0058] - folding the left and right panels 22, 26 about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines 14a, 14b, so that the left and right panels 22, 26 are arranged parallel and externally to the flaps 24, 28 of the rear and front panels 16, 20, forming a pair of opposite left and right box walls,

[0059] - folding the front lid panel 34 at 90° about the fourth crease line 32a contiguous to the top lid panel 36, and folding the flaps 46, 48 of the top lid panel 36 at 90° about the respective lengths of the fifth and sixth crease lines 44a, 44b,

[0060] - folding the top lid panel 36 about the fourth crease line 32b contiguous to the rear lid panel 38 so that the front lid panel 34 is arranged parallel and internally to the front panel 20, and that the left and right flaps 46, 48 of the lid compression member 30 are arranged parallel and internally to the left and right flaps 24, 28 of the chassis 10.

[0061] The front and rear walls of the box are reinforced by the lid compression member 30. The bottom edges 38d, 46d and 48d of the rear lid panel 34, left flap 46 and right flap 48, respectively, are configured to rest on the bottom panel 18.

[0062] A pulling action can be exerted on the lid compression member by gripping on the apertures 39 formed in the lid compression member 30. Consequently, a removable portion of the lid compression member 30, formed by the front portion 36a of the top lid panel 36 and the front panel 34 gets detached from the rear portion 36b of the top lid panel 36 as a result of the laceration of the perforated or notched detachment line 36c, while a portion formed by the rear lid panel 38, rear portion 36b and flaps 46, 48 of the top lid panel 36 remains attached to the inner face of the rear panel 16. At the same time, the box B splits into two parts, a front open box Bl and a front lid L, as a result of the complete laceration of the perforated or notched detachment line 34c (figure 11).

[0063] The front lid L of the box can be removed, while the front open box Bl serves as a display for the articles contained therein (not shown).

[0064] A plurality of front open boxes Bl can be stacked on top of each other as shown in figure 13, with the stacking tabs 29b of one of the front open boxes Bl being inserted into the stacking cut-outs 29a of another front open box Bl arranged on top of it.

[0065] According to an alternative configuration, a removable portion of the lid compression member 30 comprising the rear portion 36b and flaps 46, 48 of the top lid panel 36 can be detached as a result of the laceration of the further perforated or notched detachment line 36d, while the rear lid panel 38, remains attached to the inner face of the rear panel 16. Therefore, a tray T is obtained as a result of the complete laceration of the perforated or notched detachment line 36d (figure 12). This tray can be stacked as well by using the stacking tabs 29b stacking cut-outs 29a.

[0066] In the above description, features that have been disclosed in connection with one of the embodiments can be combined with features of the other embodiments.
