Abstract

Techniques pertaining to artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI / ML) models for channel generation for applications in wireless communications are described. An apparatus receives a text description as an input. The apparatus then provides the text description to a generative AI / ML model to cause the generative AI / ML model to generate a wireless channel based on the text description. In some cases, the wireless channel is a multi-dimensional channel including a three-dimensional spatial domain, a time domain and a frequency domain.

Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE / MACHINE LEARNING MODELS FOR CHANNEL GENERATIONCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)

[0001] The present disclosure is part of a non-provisional application claiming the priority benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 63 / 555,136, filed 19 February 2024, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to wireless communications and, more particularly, to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models for channel generation for applications in wireless communications.BACKGROUND

[0003] Unless otherwise indicated herein, approaches described in this section are not prior art to the claims listed below and are not admitted as prior art by inclusion in this section.

[0004] In wireless communications such as mobile communications in accordance with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards, the difficulty in wireless channel modeling lies in being able to accurately capture the complex and dynamic nature of various wireless communication environments. Several factors typically contribute to this complexity in wireless channel modeling, including multipath propagation, facing, shadowing, interference, dynamic nature, and frequency dependence.

[0005] With respect to multipath propagation, wireless signals can take multiple paths to reach a receiver due to reflection, diffraction, and scattering. This results in the reception of multiple delayed and attenuated versions of the transmitted signal, leading to inter-symbol interference and fading. Fading refers to the variation in signal strength over time and space due to multipath propagation, leading to fast fading (rapid fluctuations) and slow fading (gradual changes) . Modeling these variations accurately tends to be challenging. With respect to shadowing, large objects and obstacles in the wireless communication environment can cause signal attenuation, leading to shadowing effects. Modeling these effects requires accounting for the specific geometry and materials present in the wireless communication environment. With respect to interference, wireless channels are susceptible to interference from other transmitters, both within and outside the intended communication system. Modeling the impact of interference on signal quality is crucial for realistic channel models. With respect to dynamic nature, wireless channels are inherently dynamic, with characteristics changing over time due to movement of transmitters, receivers, and obstacles. Capturing this dynamic behavior in a model adds another layer of complexity. With respect to frequency dependence, the characteristics of wireless channels can vary significantly with frequency, requiring models to account for frequency-dependent effects such as path loss, dispersion, and Doppler shift.

[0006] To accurately model wireless channels, researchers and engineers often employ techniques such as statistical channel modeling, ray tracing, and empirical measurements. These approaches aim to capture the statistical properties and spatial-temporal dynamics of wireless channels; yet difficulty and complexity in wireless channel modeling as described above remains a challenge. Specifically, due to the difficulty of wireless channel modeling, there tends to be a huge difference between the synthetic channel generated by current modeling approaches and real-life channel conditions. Therefore, there is a need for a solution of AI / ML models for channel generation for applications in wireless communications.SUMMARY

Overview

[0020] Implementations in accordance with the present disclosure relate to various techniques, methods, schemes and / or solutions pertaining to AI / ML models for channel generation for applications in wireless communications. According to the present disclosure, a number of possible solutions may be implemented separately or jointly. That is, although these possible solutions may be described below separately, two or more of these possible solutions may be implemented in one combination or another.

[0021] FIG. 1 illustrates an example network environment 100 in which various solutions and schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be implemented. FIG. 2 ~ FIG. 5 illustrate examples of implementation of various proposed schemes in network environment 100 in accordance with the present disclosure. The following description of various proposed schemes is provided with reference to FIG. 1 ~ FIG. 5.

[0022] Referring to FIG. 1, network environment 100 may involve a user equipment (UE) 110, such as a mobile device or smartphone, in wireless communication with a wireless network 120 as part of a communication network. The wireless network 120 may be one or more public land mobile networks (PLMNs) including 5G / NR domain, 4G / LTE domain, and 6th Generation (6G) domain. UE 110 may be in wireless communication with wireless network 120 via a base station or network node 125 (e.g., an eNB, gNB or transmit-receive point (TRP) ) . In network environment 100, UE 110 and the wireless network 120 may implement various schemes pertaining to AI / ML models for channel generation for applications in wireless communications in accordance with the present disclosure, as described herein. It is noteworthy that, while the various proposed schemes may be individually or separately described below, in actual implementations some or all of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented jointly. Of course, each of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented individually or separately.

[0023] Under various proposed schemes in accordance with the present disclosure, a wireless communication channel simulated and modeled by AI / ML modeling may involve a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel in an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system. Accordingly, an nR×nT MIMO channel in the OFDM system may be expressed as:

[0024] Here, nR denotes the number of receiver antennas (e.g., at UE 110) , nT denotes the number of transmitter antennas (e.g., at network node 125) , n denotes the time domain index in the unit of OFDM symbol, and m denotes the frequency domain index in the unit of subcarrier or subband. By assuming nR=1, the MIMO channel may be expressed by a three-dimensional (3D) array as follows: H3D= {h [i, n, m] : 1≤i≤nT, 1≤n≤N, 1≤m≤M}

[0025] In the above expression, N denotes the total number of OFDM symbols and M denotes the total number of subcarriers or subbands.

[0026] FIG. 2 illustrates an example scenario 200 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. Under the proposed scheme, a text-to-channel generator may be utilized in the AI / ML modeling of a wireless communication channel. That is, by utilizing generative modeling of AI / ML, simulated wireless channels may be generated without complicated modeling. In current channel modeling approaches, a plethora of parameters are typically required to configure channel modeling. In contrast, the text-to-channel generator under the proposed scheme may generate any wireless channel by receiving from a human user or a device a simple text description of an environment, and there may be no need to specify detailed parameters typically required of complicated channel modeling. It is noteworthy that, under the proposed scheme, there is no limit to the generation of multi-dimensional channels. For instance, a text description may be provided to the text-to-channel generator to generate a 3D spatial domain plus time and frequency domains as a five-dimensional channel. Referring to FIG. 2, a simple textual description of “generate a wireless channel in an urban environment” may be provided as an input to the text-to-channel generator which, based on generative modeling of AI / ML, may output a simulated wireless channel in an urban environment. Advantageously, this may allow the user to avoid or otherwise minimize the need to input a plethora of parameters as with conventional modeling approaches.

[0027] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, a method for AI / ML model development to generate a wireless channel may involve a generative AI / ML model receiving an input text description, which may be verbal, written or textual. That is, the text description may be spoken by a user, typed (e.g., on a keyboard) by the user, read from a storage medium (e.g., a memory device) or received from a computing or communication device. The method may also involve the generative AI / ML model generating and outputting a wireless channel based on the input text description. The generative AI / ML model may thus be utilized to generate multi-dimensional channels including a 3D spatial domain, a time domain, and a frequency domain. The generative AI / ML model may be realized or otherwise achieved by an apparatus (e.g., a computer, server or any suitable computing device, including UE 110 and network node 125) executing instructions to render the generative AI / ML model. Additional Notes

[0045] The herein-described subject matter sometimes illustrates different components contained within, or connected with, different other components. It is to be understood that such depicted architectures are merely examples, and that in fact many other architectures can be implemented which achieve the same functionality. In a conceptual sense, any arrangement of components to achieve the same functionality is effectively "associated" such that the desired functionality is achieved. Hence, any two components herein combined to achieve a particular functionality can be seen as "associated with" each other such that the desired functionality is achieved, irrespective of architectures or intermedial components. Likewise, any two components so associated can also be viewed as being "operably connected" , or "operably coupled" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality, and any two components capable of being so associated can also be viewed as being "operably couplable" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality. Specific examples of operably couplable include but are not limited to physically mateable and / or physically interacting components and / or wirelessly interactable and / or wirelessly interacting components and / or logically interacting and / or logically interactable components.

[0046] Further, with respect to the use of substantially any plural and / or singular terms herein, those having skill in the art can translate from the plural to the singular and / or from the singular to the plural as is appropriate to the context and / or application. The various singular / plural permutations may be expressly set forth herein for the sake of clarity.

[0047] Moreover, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that, in general, terms used herein, and especially in the appended claims, e.g., bodies of the appended claims, are generally intended as “open” terms, e.g., the term “including” should be interpreted as “including but not limited to, ” the term “having” should be interpreted as “having at least, ” the term “includes” should be interpreted as “includes but is not limited to, ” etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is intended, such an intent will be explicitly recited in the claim, and in the absence of such recitation no such intent is present. For example, as an aid to understanding, the following appended claims may contain usage of the introductory phrases "at least one" and "one or more" to introduce claim recitations. However, the use of such phrases should not be construed to imply that the introduction of a claim recitation by the indefinite articles "a" or "an" limits any particular claim containing such introduced claim recitation to implementations containing only one such recitation, even when the same claim includes the introductory phrases "one or more" or "at least one" and indefinite articles such as "a" or "an, " e.g., “a” and / or “an” should be interpreted to mean “at least one” or “one or more; ” the same holds true for the use of definite articles used to introduce claim recitations. In addition, even if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is explicitly recited, those skilled in the art will recognize that such recitation should be interpreted to mean at least the recited number, e.g., the bare recitation of "two recitations, " without other modifiers, means at least two recitations, or two or more recitations. Furthermore, in those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, and C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, and C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. In those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, or C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, or C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that virtually any disjunctive word and / or phrase presenting two or more alternative terms, whether in the description, claims, or drawings, should be understood to contemplate the possibilities of including one of the terms, either of the terms, or both terms. For example, the phrase “A or B” will be understood to include the possibilities of “A” or “B” or “A and B. ”
