Description

[0001] TRANSPARENT HAIR CARE COMPOSITION

[0002] Field of the Invention

[0003] The present invention relates to a clear, or transparent, leave-on hair treatment composition. In particular the present invention relates to use of scalp and / or hair care composition for hair and scalp care benefits comprising hydrolyzed yeast protein which is transparent even at low temperatures.

[0004] Background of the Invention

[0005] Hair care compositions generally provide cleansing or conditioning benefits or a combination of the two. Such compositions typically comprise one or more cleansing surfactants which generally aid in cleaning the hair and / or the scalp free of undesirable soil, particles, and fatty matter.

[0006] Leave on hair care compositions have been quite common. It has been a consumer preference to select transparent hair care compositions over opaque compositions. As transparent leave-on compositions give a perception of being mild and hypoallergic to the consumers which helps in acceptance by the consumers.

[0007] It has often been a challenge for the manufacturers of hair care serums to provide a composition which has hair benefit actives as well as visual transparency and the right consumer acceptable rheology in terms of viscosity (neither too runny and nor too thick). Usually the hair benefit actives make it difficult to achieve a transparent hair care composition which remains transparent even at low temperatures.

[0008] CN114469808 (HU Weihua) relates to a nano-emulsion containing yeast peptide hydrolysate, a preparation method of the nano-emulsion and application of the nanoemulsion in anti-hair loss cosmetics. The nano-emulsion comprises yeast peptide hydrolysate, ergothioneine, a chelating agent, an emulsifier, propylene glycol caprylate, a schisandra fruit extract, gallic acid and the like. As an active matter carrier, the antihair loss composition has more excellent anti-hair loss performance than commercially available products when being applied to anti-hair loss cosmetics, and the hair loss phenomenon caused by long-term oxidative stress reaction is avoided. Therefore there remains a need to have a transparent hair care composition with the consumer desired rheology which can incorporate hair care benefit agents.

[0009] Summary of the Invention

[0010] First aspect of the present invention provides a transparent hair care composition comprising: a. 0.1 to 5 wt% hydrolyzed yeast protein, b. 0.1 to 20wt% a non-ionic surfactant comprising a sorbic acid based non-ionic surfactant and alkoxylated alcohol based non-ionic surfactant, c. 0.01 to 3 wt% preservative, d. 0.01 to 3 wt% chelating agent, e. 0.01 to 3 wt% polycationic polymer, and f. 80 to 95wt% water.

[0011] Second aspect of the present invention provides a non-therapeutic method of preventing or reducing hair fall in an individual in need thereof, comprising topically applying a hair care composition comprising composition according to the first aspect, in an amount effective to reduce shedding of hair club fibres from hair follicles of the individual, and / or reduce hair breakage of the individual.

[0012] Third aspect of the present invention provides use of composition according to the first aspect to manufacture a transparent hair care composition.

[0013] Fourth aspect of the present invention provides a hair care composition comprising hydrolyzed yeast protein, polycationic polymers and polysorbate based emulsifier to manufacture a transparent hair care composition having viscosity in the range of 0.4 - 1.5 Pa*s (400 to 1500 cps).

[0014] Detailed Description of the Invention

[0015] These and other aspects, features and advantages will become apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art from a reading of the following detailed description and the appended claims. For the avoidance of doubt, any feature of one aspect of the present invention may be utilized in any other aspect of the invention. The word “comprising” is intended to mean “including” but not necessarily “consisting of” or “composed of.” In other words, the listed steps or options need not be exhaustive. It is noted that the examples given in the description below are intended to clarify the invention and are not intended to limit the invention to those examples per se. Similarly, all percentages are weight / weight percentages unless otherwise indicated. Except in the operating and comparative examples, or where otherwise explicitly indicated, all numbers in this description and claims indicating amounts of material or conditions of reaction, physical properties of materials and / or use are to be understood as modified by the word “about”. Numerical ranges expressed in the format "from x to y" are understood to include x and y. When for a specific feature multiple preferred ranges are described in the format "from x to y", it is understood that all ranges combining the different endpoints are also contemplated.

[0016] Throughout the specification unless otherwise specified, wt% means weight % of the total weight of the hair care composition of the present invention.

[0017] "Leave-on" as used herein means compositions that are applied to the scalp and / or skin and are not intended to be washed or rinsed off for some period of time, as contrasted with cleansing or wash-off or rinse-off compositions.

[0018] "Stable" or "Stability" as used herein means that composition does not separate and is not grainy and does not curdle and does not solidify or form a stiff gel and remains transparent over a period of time.

[0019] A “hair care composition” is a composition which is intended for application on scalp and / or hair and which benefits hair and / or scalp.

[0020] The present inventors were faced with the problem of providing a hair care composition that works for hair benefit such as reducing hair fall and which is transparent even at low temperatures such as at 4°C during winter months and in colder regions of the world. Usually hair care compositions comprise one or more of hair actives. The problem that the present inventors faced was with hydrolysed yeast protein, it was extremely difficult to control the rheology, achieve transparency and at the same time manage the stickiness effect of the composition. A composition which had all these attributes with the hydrolysed yeast protein was difficult to formulate. The formulations in the market have used silicones and / or styrene / vinylpyrrolidone copolymer or other polymers which are either non-transparent or result in a too sticky after feel or do not have the desired consumer rheology which is generally a viscosity in the range of 0.05 to 2 Pa s. The inventors tried various permutations and combinations and finally surprisingly found that the combination of the ingredients according to the first aspect resulted in compositions which have all the required characteristics of a hair care composition which as discussed supra the inventors had set out to achieve.

[0021] The composition of the present invention has consumer desirable characteristics as most hair benefit compositions have a rheology which is thick and have an after-feel of stickiness on the hair. Those compositions feel like more of a medication on hair. However, the present composition has a lighter feel, being aqueous, and is perceived to be light and mild, being transparent. The composition of the present invention neither leaves a white residue nor gives a sticky after-feel to the hair which may require a wash.

[0022] Various components of the composition are described in greater detail below.

[0089] The present invention provides a method of preparing a transparent hair care composition according to the first aspect, the method comprising steps of: i. mixing the polycationic polymer and water to form a mixture-l; ii. adding non-ionic surfactant to the mixture of step (i) to form a mixture-ll; iii. adding hydrolyzed yeast protein, preservative and chelating agents to the mixture-ll of step (ii) to obtain the composition according to the first aspect.

[0090] EXAMPLES

[0091] Example 1 - hair care compositions

[0092] The hair care compositions for the examples were prepared in accordance with the present invention. Demineralized water was taken in a vessel. Polycationic polymer were added over the top under stirring. Stirring was continued for 20 mins at 500 RPM. Silicones were added over the top. Oleth-20 was melted in heating chamber at 40 degrees and was then added to the main vessel in liquid form. Emotives were mixed with water and then added to the main vessel. Hydrolyzed Yeast Protein and preservatives was added over the top and allowed to mix for 10 mins. Polysorbate 80 was then added over the top into the main mixer. pH was adjusted between 5-7 using citric acid or sodium hydroxide as required.

[0093] Viscosity was measured using Brookfield with Spindle no. 2, 20 RPM for 1 min. 0.1 to 2 Pa s was considered as acceptable desired viscosity for the examples.

[0094] Transparency was measured at 4°C and 45°C. The transmittance was found to be greater than 98% when measured at 650nm in UV spectrophotometer.

[0095] For comparative analysis, a control composition with styrene / vinylpyrrolidone copolymer was taken which was opaque. Various compositions were prepared to achieve the desired result, a few of them are listed in Table 1. All compositions were formulated with hair benefit actives such as zinc gluconate, zinc sulfate, grape seed oil and hydrolyzed yeast protein. Composition E1 was formulated similar to the control without styrene / vinylpyrrolidone copolymer. E2 was also formulated similar to the control without styrene / vinylpyrrolidone copolymer, the rheology modifying agent Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6 was used. Similarly for E3, E4 and E6, the rheology modifying agents sclerotium gum, hydroxyethyl cellulose and hydrogenated castor oil ethoxylates - PEG-40-HCO were respectively used. For E5, which is the preferred composition of the present invention, ethoxylated oleyl alcohol and polysorbate 80 were used as non-ionic surfactants and Polyquaternium 10 as a polycationic polymer was used. E7 on the other hand has Polyquaternium 10 as a polycationic polymer and sorbic acid based non-ionic surfactant as polysorbate 80, E7 is similar to E5, but has no alkoxylated alcohol based non-ionic surfactant which is ethoxylated oleyl alcohol. Table 1 The data in the table above shows that E1 which was formulated similar to the control without the styrene / vinylpyrrolidone copolymer was very runny and did not possess the consumer desired rheology. On the other hand, when polyacrylate crosspolymer-6 was used in E2 the composition turned turbid at 45°C within 48 hrs. Similarly E3 and E4 and E6 resulted in a turbid composition. Whereas, E5 formulated according to the composition of the present invention, the result was a transparent composition which was stable for about 12 weeks at from 4°C to 45°C temperature and with an acceptable desired viscosity. Control, E1 to E4 and E6 were a bit on the runny side in terms of viscosity, whereas even though E7 had good desired viscosity, it was turbid and therefore not acceptable.
