[0001] The present invention relates to a hair removal device, in particular an electric shaver, a hair trimmer or an epilator, comprising a handle, and a head, said head comprises a hair removal unit and said handle comprises an on / off button and a motor driving said hair removal unit. The present invention also relates to a method for determining the hygienic status of said hair removal device.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Hair removal devices, like electric shavers, hair trimmers (also named hair clippers) both for cutting hairs or epilators mainly for plugging hairs or light induced hair removal or hair cutting, are usually sold in a packaged form. The consumer opens a cartonnage of the package in order to remove the hair removal device for first usage. For some consumers the (motor) sound decides whether the consumer wants to keep the device or return it to the store. Thus, some devices are just briefly operated by the consumer with the motor ON and then returned to the store if e.g. the operating sound is found as non -satisfactory. For hygienic reasons such returned devices are then waste –which is not sustainable. Some packages allow to determine whether it was opened or not but it is difficult to determine whether the hair removal device was also used for removing hairs by the consumer when the device is returned.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0003] It is therefore an objective of the present invention to provide a hair removal device and a method that allows assessing whether the device was used or determine its hygienic status. In particular it is an objective to determine whether a returned the treatment portion, i.e. the hair cutting or plugging area of that device came in contact with human skin or not.
[0004] These objectives and other problems are addressed by a hair removal device having the features of claim 1. These objectives and other problems are also addressed by a method for determining the hygienic status of said hair removal device having the features of claim 14. Advantageous embodiments are set for by the features of the subclaims.
[0005] A hair removal device, in particular an electric shaver, a hair trimmer or an epilator, comprises a handle, a head and a seal, said head comprises a hair removal unit and said handle comprises an on / off button and a motor driving said hair removal unit, said seal covers said hair removal unit and is configured to be only one-time usable. In the alternative to the motor the device may comprise a light source emitting light in the hair removal unit for hair removal. Thus, the seal is one time applied to the device in new condition for selling said device. The consumer needs to remove the seal in order to make use of the hair removal unit e.g. for hair cutting (for a shaver or trimmer) or hair plugging (for an epilator) or optical light induced hair removal (for an epilator or a shaver or trimmer) . For removal of the seal, the seal will be broken or damaged or otherwise unusable again. As the seal is one-time useable only it is not re-appliable on the hair removal unit after it was removed once. As the seal covers at least the hair removal unit of the head of that device it is still possible to actuate the on / off button. Preferably, the seal is configured and arranged to allow the device running in idle mode or without load or without hair cutting. Thus, the consumer can check the sound with motor running and other handle related or design related aspects of the device without breaking the seal and without causing bacterial contamination of the hair removal unit. Such a sealed arrangement is not only advantageous for all such products packaged and sold but also for those which are available in store at the shelf for touch and try consumer experiences.
[0006] In an alternative or in addition it is possible to provide this seal to another part of the device which needs to be assured not to come into skin contact. Usually, such other part is a functional operating part having a surface to be brought in skin contact during usage, i.e. a brush or comb, a massage or skin treatment part or skin sensing part.
[0007] A method is provided for determining the hygienic status of a hair removal device by arranging a one-time only useable seal to cover a treatment portion of a hair removal head of said hair removal device and by verifying whether said seal is unbroken and arranged to cover the treatment portion. It also assures that touch and try devices on the shelf in a store are not used for hair removal in the store.

[0022] A hair removal device, in particular an electric shaver, a hair trimmer or an epilator, comprises a handle, a head and a seal, said head comprises a hair removal unit and said handle comprises an on / off button and a motor driving said hair removal unit, said seal covers said hair removal unit and is configured to be only one-time usable. Thus, the seal is one time applied to the device in new condition for selling said device. The consumer needs to remove the seal in order to make use of the hair removal unit e.g. for hair cutting (for a shaver or trimmer) or hair plugging (for an epilator) . For removal of the seal, the seal will be broken or damaged or otherwise unusable again. As the seal is one-time useable only it is not re-appliable on the hair removal unit after it was removed once. As the seal covers at least the hair removal unit of the head of that device it is still possible to actuate the on / off button. [0023] In an advantageous embodiment comprises said seal a breakaway portion for breaking said seal and uncovering said hair removal unit. A pre-made breakaway portion is configured and / or manipulates the seal to more easily breaking the seal and removal of said seal from the hair removal unit. The electric shaver 1 has a handle 4 which is connected with a pivotable head 3. This wrapping only around one axis means that the sides of the shaver head 3 are completely uncovered (see Fig. 2) which provide two openings 10, 11 of the seal on the sides. All these openings or windows reduce the coverage of the head 3 by the seal 2 and maximizes the unobstructed view on the design of the hair removal device. The first part 20 is made from a paper strip material of around 200-300g / squaremeter which may be around 0, 2-0, 4mm thick. Making the seal too thin, however, may break the seal too easily and may create more complexity to the assembly of the seal onto the head due to its instability.

In order to prevent that the seal may be removed from the head 3 without damage of the seal 2 in the same way as the assembly, the second part 21 is then connected or glued at the corresponding connecting areas 25a-d –see fig. 14.
[0048] Figs. 15 to 18 shows one exemplary way (from several possible) as to how to remove the seal 2 from the head 3. A consumer is supposed to take the gripping tongue 24 of the seal 2 in order to activate the breakaway portion 28, which is a perforated, thinned out or otherwise weakened line adjacent to the gripping tongue 24 and the connecting area 25b, 25c. Pulling at the gripping tongue 24 as indicated by figs 15, 16 will cause the breakaway portion 28 with its perforation to break and will thus without need for much forces or tools allow separating one of the looping legs 33, 29 into two disconnected halves. Thus, removal of the second part 21 is not needed for breaking the seal, but would be another less simple way to break the seal. As can be seen by fig. 17, the looping leg 29 is broken and the seal 2 can be easily removed from the head 3–see fig. 18.
