[0001] SOLID COSMETIC COMPOSITION COMPRISING GEOSMIN AND A CARBON DIOXIDE EFFERVESCENT COMPONENT

[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention relates to a solid cosmetic product and use of the same to improve wellbeing.

[0004] BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION

[0005] The present invention relates to products particularly those for use in contact with the human body.

[0006] In the modern era, a high proportion of cosmetic products are typically provided to consumers in the form of liquid or pastes. For example, hair styling products are typically provided as hair gels or pastes, which require packaging in order to transport and store said products. Oral care (or oral hygiene) products, such as toothpastes and mouthwashes, are also either provided in paste or liquid form, thus requiring some form of external packaging. They are sold in containers to the end user and may be dispensed by the end user. However, the required use of packaging is a disadvantage. From an environmental perspective, waste packaging is a significant problem, despite the availability of recycling.

[0007] One popular cosmetic product which is both solid and provides a more ‘exciting’ product than its predecessor is the Bath Bomb. Bath bomb type products may be considered a form of bath salt as they typically comprises at least one salt of carbonic acid, and at least one acidifying agent. When a bath bomb is placed into water, it vigorously effervesces releasing carbon dioxide. The reaction is an acid-base reaction resulting in the production of a salt, carbon dioxide and water. Other more recent solid products, particularly those developed by the present applicant include solid shower gels, solid shampoos, solid hair conditioners, solid hair dye, solid body lotions, solid massage bars, shower jellies, solid moisturisers, solid body scrubs, solid bubble bars for creating bubble baths, solid sunscreens, and solid make-up. Many of these products address the issue of avoiding unnecessary packaging, and many of them also provide their own unique user experiences, in additional to the functional delivery of a cosmetically active agent.

[0008] In all fields, including the field of cosmetics, there is an increasing awareness of the importance of mental well-being, in addition to physical well-being. In recent years there has been an increase both in the recognition of the importance of good mental health but also increased reports of poor mental health. There are many potential causes for this reported increase in poor mental health. Furthermore, many solutions or coping mechanisms have been offered for dealing with these issues. One possible solution or alleviation commonly discussed is physical exercise. Physical exercise, and in particular outdoor physical exercise is well established to improve mental health. This has led to a desire to encourage more participation, and to encourage participation in outdoor exercise in particular.

[0009] It is of course understood that physical exercise impacts not only on mental health but on physical health. The impact on physical health, while undeniably positive, may have some drawbacks. In particular, physical exertion may lead to muscle tiredness or soreness, or cramps or joint stiffness immediately after the physical exercise. These negative aspects, although outweighed by overall increases in physical and mental well-being, may deter some from repeating physical exercise. This is particularly case for those who are new to physical exertion. Furthermore, even for individuals who exercise more frequently, including athletic individuals, negative aspects such as muscle tiredness or soreness or cramps or joint stiffness, may impact on their continued exercise and training.

[0010] The present invention seeks to provide a solid cosmetic product which provides benefits to physical and / or mental health in addition to cosmetic benefits.

[0011] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0012] In a first aspect, there is provided a solid cosmetic product comprising geosmin.

[0014] (a) sodium bicarbonate in an amount of from 25 to 70 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product;

[0015] (b) citric acid in an amount of from 5 to 35 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product;

[0016] (c) sodium chloride in an amount of from 5 to 45 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product; and

[0017] (d) magnesium sulphate in an amount of from 5 to 45 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product. In a third aspect, there is provided a solid cosmetic product as defined herein for use to provide bathing water after exercise for one or more of reducing muscle tiredness, reducing muscle soreness, reducing instances of cramp, reducing joint stiffness, improving mental alertness, improving mood, improving mental wellbeing, improving quality of sleep.

[0018] In a fourth aspect, there is provided a solid cosmetic product as defined herein for use after exercise for one or more of reducing muscle tiredness, reducing muscle soreness, reducing instances of cramp, reducing joint stiffness, improving mental alertness, improving mood, improving mental wellbeing, improving quality of sleep.

[0019] In a fifth aspect, there is provided a cosmetic method comprising contacting the skin of a user with a solid cosmetic product as described herein.

[0023] Advantages

[0024] It has been found that by providing the solid cosmetic product of the present invention in which there is included geosmin, a user of a solid cosmetic product may be provided with a highly desirable product. Geosmin [(4S,4aS,8aR)-4,8a-Dimethyloctahydronaphthalen- 4a(2H)-ol] is the compound responsible for the earthy, musty smell of drinking water. It is also known to be released in the environment after or shortly before rainfall. Evidence suggests that it has benefits for human mood. Humans are particularly sensitive to its odour, and the human nose is said to detect geosmin at less than five parts per trillion. It is believed that this high sensitivity may have allowed humans to find water in arid environments.

[0025] One study (Kim, M et al, 2017.) found that inhaling geosmin produced significant changes in absolute alpha and absolute beta waves in a particular region of the brain. These changes during the inhalation of geosmin were linked with the calmness and relaxation.

[0026] Contact with soil containing geosmin-producing species also showed positive effects although these were not directly attributed to inhalation alone. In a recent study (Kim, SO et al 2022.), adults performed soil-mixing with soil inoculated with geosmin-producing Mycobacterium vaccae and Streptomyces rimosus for five minutes. As a result, alpha wave activity increased in the occipital lobe of the brain, showing a psychophysiological stabilising effect, and serotonin was found to increase significantly in blood metabolite analysis. Heart rate decreased.

[0027] A further study (Choi NY et al, 2022) looked at the effects of seed-sowing in Streptomyces rimosus-ric soil: a bacterial species also known to release large amounts of geosmin. Participants participated in seed-sowing activities twice for 20 minutes each and results found a significant increase in indicators related to brain arousal and concentration.

[0028] It has been found that through provision of a solid cosmetic product of the present invention in which there is included geosmin, a user is offered a cosmetic that not only delivers a cosmetic effect but which also provides the mental health benefits of inhaling geosmin.

[0029] It has also been found that in addition to, or in the alternative to, including geosmin, that advantages in respect of recovery after exercise may be delivered by bathing in water in which has been dispersed a solid cosmetic product containing significant amounts of sodium chloride (salt) and magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt). It has been found that after exercise bathing in this manner may reduce muscle tiredness and / or reduce muscle soreness and / or reduce instances of cramp and / or reduce joint stiffness and / or improve mental alertness and / or improve mood and / or improve mental wellbeing and / or improve quality of sleep.

[0030] In respect of products containing geosmin and products containing significant amounts (5 to 40 wt%) of sodium chloride (salt) and magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt), it has been further found that highly beneficial effects may be observed when the user bathes with the product in ‘cold’ bathing water, such as bathing water having a temperature of no greater than 15°C. In particular, it is found that during exposure to ‘cold’ water central core temperature is prioritised, which in turn results in skin temperature drop. Peripheral blood flow decreases as water temperature becomes colder and heat is lost from the body surface faster than it is replaced. Shivering occurs and cardiac output and metabolism increases (Marriott BM et al).

[0031] A study (Sramek P, 2000) compared the effects of hot (32°C), warm (20°C) and cold (14°C) water on the hormone and cardiovascular functions of a group of young men. The findings were that hot water immersion lowered heart rate (by 15%) and systolic and diastolic blood pressures (by 11 %, or 12%, respectively), compared to controls at ambient air temperature. Hormone production of renin and aldosterone (which help regulate blood pressure) and cortisol (the ‘stress’ hormone) were also lowered. In contrast, cold water immersion (14°C) increased metabolic rate (by 350%), heart rate and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (by 5%, 7%, and 8%, respectively). Plasma, noradrenaline (the ‘fight or flight’ hormone) and dopamine (the ‘reward’ hormone) concentrations were increased by 530% and by 250% respectively. Concentrations of aldosterone (a regulator of blood pressure) increased by 23% but renin activity and cortisol concentrations decreased.

[0032] It has also been found (Huttunen, P et al 2004) that regular winter swimming significantly decreases tension and fatigue and boosts memory, and mood in participants over time. The activity also relieved pain in swimmers who suffered from rheumatism, fibromyalgia, or asthma and improved general well-being. Research (Esperland D, et al) shows that regular winter swimmers acclimatise to the cold, though this ceases if swimming stops. Similar findings (Park YS, et al 1983) have been demonstrated in a group of Korean female divers called Ama, who are exposed to cold water from a young age. In older, cold-adapted Ama the response to cold is heat loss reduction rather than increased metabolic increase. This acclimatisation gradually changed when they began to wear wetsuits.

Claims

CLAIMS1. A solid cosmetic product comprising geosmin.

2. A solid cosmetic product according to claim 1 wherein the solid cosmetic product comprises a carbon dioxide effervescent component which effervesces on contact with water.

3. A solid cosmetic product according to claim 2 wherein the wherein the solid cosmetic product consists of the carbon dioxide effervescent component.

4. A solid cosmetic product according to claim 2 or 3 wherein the carbon dioxide effervescent component comprises a salt of carbonic acid; and an acidifying agent.

5. A solid cosmetic product according to claim 4 wherein the salt of carbonic acid and the acidifying agent are present in a weight ratio of from 90:10 to 50:50.

6. A solid cosmetic product according to claim 4 or 5 wherein the salt of carbonic acid and the acidifying agent are present in a weight ratio of from 90:10 to 70:30.

7. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 4 to 6 wherein the salt of carbonic acid is selected from alkali metal carbonates, alkali metal bicarbonates and mixtures thereof.

8. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 4 to 7 wherein the salt of carbonic acid is selected from sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and mixtures thereof.

9. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 4 to 8 wherein the acidifying agent is selected from monocarboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acids, tricarboxylic acids and mixtures thereof.

10. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 4 to 9 wherein the acidifying agent is selected citric acid, potassium bitartrate (cream of tartar) and mixtures thereof.

11. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the solid cosmetic product comprises sodium chloride, magnesium sulphate or a mixture thereof.

12. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 2 to 10 wherein the carbon dioxide effervescent component comprises sodium chloride, magnesium sulphate or a mixture thereof.

13. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the carbon dioxide effervescent component comprises sodium bicarbonate in an amount of from 25 to 70 wt% based on the carbon dioxide effervescent component; and citric acid in an amount of from 5 to 35 wt% based on the carbon dioxide effervescent component.

14. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 11 to 13 wherein the carbon dioxide effervescent component comprises sodium chloride in an amount of from 5 to 45 wt% based on the carbon dioxide effervescent component.

15. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 11 to 14 wherein the carbon dioxide effervescent component comprises magnesium sulphate in an amount of from 5 to 45 wt% based on the carbon dioxide effervescent component.

16. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the solid cosmetic product comprises sodium bicarbonate in an amount of from 25 to 70 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product; and citric acid in an amount of from 5 to 35 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product.

17. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 11 to 16 wherein the solid cosmetic product comprises sodium chloride in an amount of from 5 to 45 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product.

18. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 11 to 17 wherein the solid cosmetic product comprises magnesium sulphate in an amount of from 5 to 45 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product.

19. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of claims 2 to 18 wherein the carbon dioxide effervescent component comprises(a) a salt of carbonic acid;(b) an acidifying agent comprising citric acid and cream of tartar, wherein the weight ratio of citric acid to cream of tartar is from about 4:1 to about 1 :7.

20. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the solid cosmetic contains geosmin in an amount of from 0.00005 to 0.01 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product.

21. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the solid cosmetic product further comprises a colouring.

22. A solid cosmetic product according to claim 21 wherein the solid cosmetic product comprises a water soluble colouring.

23. A solid cosmetic product according to claim 21 or 22 wherein the solid cosmetic product comprises colouring in an amount of from 0.001 to 5 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product.

24. A solid cosmetic product according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the product is a bathing product.

25. A solid cosmetic product comprising(a) sodium bicarbonate in an amount of from 25 to 70 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product;(b) citric acid in an amount of from 5 to 35 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product;(c) sodium chloride in an amount of from 5 to 45 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product; and(d) magnesium sulphate in an amount of from 5 to 45 wt% based on the solid cosmetic product.

26. A solid cosmetic product according to claim 25 further comprising geosmin.

27. A solid cosmetic product as defined in any one of claims 1 to 26 for use to provide bathing water after exercise for one or more of reducing muscle tiredness, reducing muscle soreness, reducing instances of cramp, reducing joint stiffness, improving mental alertness, improving mood, improving mental wellbeing, improving quality of sleep.

28. A solid cosmetic product for use according to claim 27 wherein after exercise the user bathes in water in which the solid cosmetic product has been dispersed, and wherein the temperature of the water is no greater than 20°C, such as no greater than 15°C, such as from 5 to 15°C.
