Description

OPTICAL AMPLIFIER, CONTROL METHOD AND OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of optical communications, and in particular, to an optical amplifier, a control method and an optical communication system.BACKGROUND

[0002] Doped fiber amplifiers such as erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are key building blocks in optical communication systems, which can provide an optical gain to compensate for insertion loss induced by transmission fibers and other devices along the link. In modern agile and reconfigurable wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks, an ideal optical amplifier should provide a "stiff" gain, i.e., the gain spectrum (shape) is independent from the operation conditions including channel load / allocation (the number and spectral locations of input WDM signals) , channel input signal power, gain control settings, etc.

[0003] However, the actual gain profile of the optical amplifier is not 100% "stiff" , and under different operation conditions, gain shape deformations will occur accordingly. The gain shape deformation will cause some signal channels to fail, leading to a delay in service recovery (network reconfiguration) and bringing additional costs.SUMMARY

[0004] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide an optical amplifier, a control method and an optical communication system to solve the problem of the gain shape deformation of the optical amplifier.

[0005] In order to achieve the above objective, the following technical solutions are adopted in the present disclosure.

[0006] In an aspect, embodiments of the present disclosure provide an optical amplifier, which includes: a first tap, a plurality of amplification stage assemblies, a wavelength detection assembly and a control circuit. The first tap is configured to receive an input wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signal. The plurality of amplification stage assemblies are connected in sequence, and a first amplification stage assembly in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies is coupled to a first output of the first tap. The wavelength detection assembly is coupled to a second output of the first tap, and the wavelength detection assembly is configured to detect signals with wavelengths less than or equal to a predetermined value. The control circuit is coupled to the plurality of amplification stage assemblies and the wavelength detection assembly. An amplification stage assembly includes a doped fiber and a pump source coupled to the doped fiber; the control circuit is coupled to the pump source, and is configured to tune a power of the pump source. In the optical amplifier provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure, there is no need to use an optical channel monitor (OCM) device for detecting the allocation of signal channels, and there is also no need to use a compensation element (CE) device, thereby reducing the cost of the optical amplifier. Compared to providing a pump power variable optical attenuator (PVOA) in each amplification stage, by providing the wavelength detection assembly, the optical amplifier provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure may select an appropriate adjustment strategy based on the detection result of the wavelength detection assembly, thereby ensuring the flatness of the overall gain shape, avoiding serious gain distortion of signal channels with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value. In addition, since there is no need to use the PVOA, additional costs are avoided.

[0007] In some embodiments, the optical amplifier further includes: a first splitter, a first photodetector, a second tap, and a second photodetector. An input of the first splitter is coupled to the second output of the first tap. The first photodetector is coupled to a first output of the first splitter, and the wavelength detection assembly is coupled to a second output of the first splitter. An input of the second tap is coupled to a last amplification stage assembly in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies, and a first output of the second tap is configured to send an output WDM signal. The second photodetector is coupled to a second output of the second tap. The control circuit is  further coupled to the first photodetector and the second photodetector, and the control circuit is configured to tune the power of the pump source based on detection results of the first photodetector, the second photodetector and the wavelength detection assembly. Based on the reading of the first photodetector, a power of the input signal input to the optical amplifier can be obtained, and based on the reading of the second photodetector, a power of the output signal output by the optical amplifier can be obtained. The control circuit can determine whether the input signal is in partial load based on the reading of the first photodetector, calculate an average gain level of the optical amplifier based on the input signal power and the output signal power, and select the appropriate adjustment strategy, based on the detection result of the wavelength detection assembly, to lock the average gain to a target gain level. Since the photodetector is a conventional device with a low cost, the arrangement of the photodetector in the optical amplifier will not significantly increase the cost.

[0008] In some embodiments, the wavelength detection assembly includes an optical low pass filter (OLPF) and a third photodetector. An input of the OLPF is coupled to the second output of the first tap; an input of the third photodetector is coupled to an output of the OLPF, and an output of the third photodetector is coupled to the control circuit. Based on the combination of the OLPF and the third photodetector, it is easy to detect whether wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value exist in the input signal, and the structure of the wavelength detection assembly is simple.

[0009] In some embodiments, the OLPF is configured to allow signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm to pass through. For the EDFA, by setting the predetermined value to 1529 nm, it is possible to select whether to improve the gain shape deformation induced by the SHB effect based on inverse SHB, and to avoid the gain distortion of signal channels with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm.

[0010] In some embodiments, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies include at least three amplification stage assemblies; in amplification stage assemblies except for the first amplification stage assembly, at least two adjacent amplification stage assemblies share one pump source. Since at least two amplification stage assemblies share one pump source, the number of pump sources may be reduced.

[0011] In some embodiments, two adjacent amplification stage assemblies share one pump source. In this way, it is possible to ensure that the pump power input to each amplification stage assembly is within a large range.

[0012] In some embodiments, the optical amplifier further includes a second splitter; an input of the second splitter is coupled to one pump source, and outputs of the second splitter are coupled to doped fibers of the at least two amplification stage assemblies sharing the pump source. By providing the second splitter, it is easy to achieve that at least two amplification stage assemblies share one pump source.

[0013] In some embodiments, the optical amplifier further includes at least one signal variable optical attenuator (VOA) . A signal VOA is coupled between two adjacent amplification stage assemblies and coupled to the control circuit, and the control circuit is further configured to tune the signal VOA. By providing the signal VOA, the control circuit may improve the gain shape deformation induced by the SHB effect by adjusting the attenuation value of the signal VOA.

[0014] In some embodiments, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies includes three amplification stage assemblies; the at least one signal VOA includes one signal VOA, and the signal VOA is arranged between the first amplification stage assembly and a second amplification stage assembly, or between the second amplification stage assembly and a third amplification stage assembly. In this way, on the basis of ensuring that the signal VOA has a good adjustment effect on the gain shape deformation, the number of signal VOAs is decreased to reduce cost.

[0015] In some embodiments, the optical amplifier further includes at least one gain flattening filter (GFF) . A GFF is coupled between two adjacent amplification stage assemblies. The GFF may keep the gain shape of the optical amplifier flat under a full-loading condition.

[0016] In some embodiments, the doped fiber is an erbium doped fiber. The optical amplifier based on the erbium  doped fiber has advantages of low operation wavelength loss, wide frequency range, high gain and low noise.

[0017] In another aspect, embodiments of the present disclosure provide an optical communication system. The optical communication system includes a plurality of reconfigurable optical add drop multiplexer (ROADM) nodes and a plurality of optical amplifiers each according to any one of the above embodiments, at least one optical amplifier is coupled between two adjacent ROADM nodes. In the optical communication system provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure, for the optical amplifier, there is no need to use an OCM device for detecting the allocation of signal channels, and there is also no need to use a CE device, thereby reducing the cost of the optical amplifier. Compared to providing a PVOA in each amplification stage, by providing the wavelength detection assembly, the optical amplifier of the optical communication system provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure may select an appropriate adjustment strategy based on the detection result of the wavelength detection assembly, thereby ensuring the flatness of the overall gain shape, avoiding serious gain distortion of signal channels with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value. In addition, since there is no need to use the PVOA, additional costs are avoided.

[0018] In yet another aspect, embodiments of the present disclosure provide a control method of an optical amplifier. The optical amplifier includes a first tap, a plurality of amplification stage assemblies, a wavelength detection assembly and a control circuit coupled to the plurality of amplification stage assemblies and the wavelength detection assembly; the plurality of amplification stage assemblies are connected in sequence, and a first amplification stage assembly in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies is coupled to a first output of the first tap; the wavelength detection assembly is coupled to a second output of the first tap; an amplification stage assembly includes a doped fiber and a pump source coupled to the doped fiber. The control method is performed by the control circuit, and the control method includes: obtaining a reading of the wavelength detection assembly in response to an input power of an input wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signal received by the first tap being less than a predetermined portion of a full-loading signal power; and triggering a special automatic gain control (AGC) process to lock an average gain of the optical amplifier to a target gain level in response to the reading of the wavelength detection assembly being less than a preset value. The special AGC process includes: tuning pump powers of pump sources in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies in a preset order, and the preset order is that a pump power of a pump source in the first amplification stage assembly is tuned last. In the control method provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure, when the operation condition of the optical amplifier changes from full load to few-channel load, according to the detection for wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value by the wavelength detection assembly, the control circuit triggers the special AGC process in a case where there is no wavelength less than or equal to the predetermined value. That is, the control circuit adopts the SHB self-compensation scheme to improve the gain shape deformation induced by the SHB effect and make the gain shape flat.

[0019] In some embodiments, the optical amplifier further includes at least one signal VOA, a signal VOA is coupled between two adjacent amplification stage assemblies and coupled to the control circuit. The control method further includes: triggering a normal AGC process and tuning attenuation of the signal VOA in response to the reading of the wavelength detection assembly being greater than or equal to the preset value. The normal AGC process includes: tuning the pump powers of the pump sources in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies synchronously. In this way, it may avoid the problem of gain distortion degradation (over-compensation) caused by using the SHB self-compensation scheme in a case where there are wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value.

[0020] In some embodiments, the control method further includes: triggering a normal AGC process in response to the input power of the input WDM signal received by the first tap being greater than or equal to the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power. The normal AGC process includes: tuning the pump powers of the pump sources in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies synchronously. In the case where the input power of the  input WDM signal received by the first tap is greater than or equal to the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power, the optical amplifier operates under full-loading condition, the gain shape is flattened only by the GFF, and there is no need to control other components to adjust the gain shape.

[0021] In some embodiments, the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power is half of the full-loading signal power.

[0022] In some embodiments, the optical amplifier further includes a first splitter, a first photodetector, a second tap and a second photodetector. An input of the first splitter is coupled to the second output of the first tap. The first photodetector is coupled to a first output of the first splitter, and the wavelength detection assembly is coupled to a second output of the first splitter. An input of the second tap is coupled to a last amplification stage assembly in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies, a first output of the second tap is configured to send an output WDM signal, and a second output of the second tap is coupled to the second photodetector. And the control method further includes: obtaining the input power of the input WDM signal according to a reading of the first photodetector; obtaining an output power of the output WDM signal according to a reading of the second photodetector; determining the average gain of the optical amplifier according to the input power and the output power. The control circuit may calculate the average gain level of the optical amplifier through the input power and the output power, then select an appropriate adjustment strategy based on the detection result of the wavelength detection assembly, and finally lock the average gain to the target gain level.

[0023] In some embodiments, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies includes three amplification stage assemblies; pump sources included in the first amplification stage assembly, a second amplification stage assembly and a third amplification stage assembly are a first pump source, a second pump source and a third pump source, respectively. The preset order is that pump powers of the second pump source, the third pump source and the first pump source are tuned in sequence; thus, the second amplification stage assembly may operate under inverse SHB. Or the preset order is that pump powers of the third pump source, the second pump source and the first pump source are tuned in sequence; thus, the third amplification stage assembly may operate under inverse SHB.

[0024] In some embodiments, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies includes three amplification stage assemblies; a pump source included in the first amplification stage assembly is a first pump source, and a second amplification stage assembly and a third amplification stage assembly share a second pump source. The preset order is that pump powers of the second pump source and the first pump source are tuned in sequence. Thus, both the second amplification stage assembly and the third amplification stage assembly may operate under inverse SHB.

[0025] In some embodiments, in the special AGC process, a pump power of a pump source to be tuned first is tuned to a value in a range of 0 to 40 mw. In this way, the corresponding amplification stage assembly may be ensured to operate under inverse SHB.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0056] Erbium doped fiber (EDF)

[0057] EDF is a type of fiber that contains a core region to guide the light, and within the core region, erbium ions are doped into the glass matrix; the erbium ions are able to provide a gain for light (with wavelengths in a range of 1500 nm to 1630 nm) that is transmitting through the core region.

[0058] Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)

[0059] EDFA is an optical amplifier that is built based on the EDFs.

[0060] Spectral hole burning (SHB) effect

[0061] In an EDFA, the SHB effect is a physical phenomenon in the EDFA, and it refers to the phenomenon that the gain spectrum of the EDFA is deformed under a partial-loading condition. The SHB effect is due to the light emission center of the EDF (i.e., the Er3+ ions) being located in amorphous silica glass matrix of the fiber where Er3+ ion's local electro-magnetic fields change from site to site. Since Er3+ ions’ stark splitting is impacted by the local fields, they will have different spectroscopic properties. The measured gain profile of the EDFA is in fact a weighted summation of those provided by different Er3+ ions. When the operation condition changes, some Er3+ ions are depleted more than the others, resulting in a deformation of the overall gain shape.

[0062] Variable optical attenuator (VOA)

[0063] VOA is a passive optical device that achieves real-time control of signals by attenuating the transmitting optical power.

[0064] Automatic gain control (AGC)

[0065] AGC is an automatic control method that adjusts a gain of an optical amplifier automatically with signal strength.

[0066] Gain flattening filter (GFF)

[0067] GFF is a device used for maintaining an average gain of an optical amplifier at different wavelengths.

[0068] Reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM)

[0069] ROADM is a device used for dynamically routing, adding and dropping optical signals in an optical  communication network. It increases flexibility of the network by allowing routing paths of the optical signals to be reconfigured at network nodes and allowing signals of specific wavelengths to be added or dropped. ROADM can be combined with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to achieve flexibility and efficient optical signal management in the optical network.

[0070] The gain shape deformation caused by SHB will be described below by taking the EDFA as an example. FIGS. 1A and 1 B illustrate a simplified optical transport network (OTN) , the OTN includes one or more optical multiplexing sections (OMSs) 901 for transmitting an optical signal. The OMS 901 is defined as a transmission link (optical link) between two adjacent ROADM nodes 902. The OMS 901 includes a plurality of optical transmission sections (OTSs) , and each OTS includes an EDFA 903 and a transmission fiber 904 (e.g., with a length of several tens of kilometers) . The ROADM node 902 can include a transmitter, represented as "Tx" , and a receiver, represented as "Rx" , to add given wavelength (s) to the optical signal and drop given wavelength (s) from the optical signal, respectively. Of course, Tx and Rx can also be arranged independently from the ROADM node 902. Each OMS 901 can be configured to add, drop, and / or reroute wavelengths of the optical signal via ROADM nodes 902. The wavelengths of the optical signal may be in one or more of the following bands: E-band (1400~1470 nm) , S-band (1470~1520 nm) , C-band (1520~1565 nm) , L-band (1565~1630 nm) and U-band (1630~1680 nm) . The C-band is taken as an example for description below.

[0071] It should be noted that FIGS. 1A and 1 B illustrate variations of received optical powers under different operation conditions in the same simplified OTN.

[0072] In FIG. 1A, the optical signal including 25 channels (full-loading) reaches the first ROADM node 902. No optical channel is added or dropped at the first ROADM node 902, and thus all 25 channels pass through the first ROADM 902 and are transmitted on a transmission link composed of EDFAs 903 and transmission fibers 904. The EDFA 903 is used for compensating for fiber loss. The EDFA 903 operates in the AGC mode, which locks the average gain to a certain level. The EDFA 903 is designed to provide the flat / identical gain in the wavelength range when the input port of the EDFA 903 is full-loaded. After propagating through the transmission link, the optical signal enters the second ROADM node 902, and then is redirected to the Rx. Since the EDFAs 903 provide the identical and flat gain shape, they compensate well for the loss of the transmission fibers. Therefore, at the Rx, all channel powers are within the receivable range. That is, no channel fails.

[0073] In comparison, in FIG. 1 B, after the optical signal including 25 channels reaches the first ROADM node 902, the first ROADM node 902 drops 19 channels out of the total 25 channels. Only 6 channels (Ch-5, Ch-6, Ch-7, Ch-8, Ch-16, and Ch-20) are sent onto the transmission link. Then, the EDFA 903 operates under a few-channel-loading condition. Due to the SHB effect that happens in the EDF, the gain shape is not flat anymore. Although the average gain of each EDFA 903 is still locked to the AGC level, the gains of Ch-5, Ch-6, Ch-7, and Ch-8 are lower compared to those of Ch-16 and Ch-20. The accumulated gains of Ch-6 and Ch-7 are insufficient to compensate for the fiber loss. Finally, at the Rx of the second ROADM node 902, the powers of Ch-6 and Ch-7 fall out of the receivable range. That is, these two channels fail.

[0074] Therefore, in optical communication networks, it is necessary to reduce the gain shape deformation of the EDFA under the few-channel-loading condition.

[0075] In order to solve the above problem, some related arts use a device called an optical channel monitor (OCM) to obtain the allocation information of signal channels, i.e., the actual optical power distribution of the signal channels. By using this information, a gain compensation element (CE) is activated to compensate for the gain shape deformation of the EDFA induced by the SHB effect. The CE can be either an active device or a passive device. In general, the CE features an inversed wavelength response with regard to the gain shape deformation.

[0076] As shown in FIG. 2, an optical transmission network is provided, which includes a pre-amplifier 801, a post-amplifier 802, a wavelength selective switch (WSS) and an optical splitter 809 located between the two, and an OCM 810 coupled to the optical splitter 809. The WSS includes a demultiplexer 803, a ROADM 804, a VOA array  805 composed of VOAs, a combiner 806, a controller 807 and a memory 808. The controller 807 is coupled to the OCM 810, VOA array 805 and memory 808.

[0077] The OCM 810 is used for detecting the power distribution of signal channels, and inputting the detection information into the controller 807, and then the controller 807 adjusts a light attenuation level of a corresponding signal channel in the VOA array 805 based on the information. After several turns of iteration, optical powers of the signal channels can be flattened. In other words, the power deviation induced by SHB can be compensated. The VOA array 805 is a passive CE.

[0078] As shown in FIG. 3, an EDFA-Raman hybrid amplifier is provided, which includes a WDM combiner 701, a first tap 702, a second tap 703, an EDFA 704 and a VOA 705 located between the first tap 702 and the second tap 703, Raman pumps 706, a detection device 707, a detector 708 and a controller 709. In the EDFA-Raman hybrid amplifier, there are two gain mediums: EDF gain and Raman gain (astimulated scattering effect happens in a section of passive fiber when several strong single-wavelength lasers are injected into the passive fiber) .

[0079] The working principle of the EDFA-Raman hybrid amplifier is as follows. First, the detection device 707 obtains allocation information of signal channels, the detection device 707 being a specially designed filter bank; then, the controller 709 adjusts wavelengths and powers of the Raman pumps 706 based on the allocation information. Therefore, the shape of the Raman gain presents some inverted spectral characteristics relative to the EDFA gain shape. They counteract each other and provide a relatively flat gain at the output port of the hybrid amplifier. The detector 708 is used for detecting the average gain output from the EDFA, and the controller 709 can adjust the VOA 705 according to the average gain. In this technical solution, the filter bank (detection device 707) is equivalent to the OCM, and the Raman gain medium is an active CE.

[0080] Some other related arts adopt the technique of adding "dummy light" to the input port of the EDFA. The working principle is not to compensate for gain deviation, but to keep the equivalent input signal channel allocation as close as possible to the full-loading condition. This is because the EDFA is designed to provide the flat gain under full-loading condition. The gain shape deformation only happens when some signal channels are absent (i.e., under the few-channel-loading condition) . This type of technical solutions also requires the OCM to provide signal channel allocation information. Then, some "dummy light" with the same wavelengths as missing signal channels is injected into the EDFA. From the EDFA perspective, the input is similar to the full-loading condition. Therefore, the SHB effect remains minor.

[0081] As shown in FIG. 4, the technical solution includes a WSS 601, a coupler 602, an EDFA 603, an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) generator 604, and a processor 605. The ASE generator 604 is coupled to the WSS 601, and the processor 605 is coupled to the coupler 602. The processor 605 includes a plurality of optical sources 6051 for controlling signal channels, a plurality of optical detectors 6052 and an optical power control unit 6053. The plurality of optical detectors 6052 are used as the OCM to detect input signal channel allocation. When an input condition of the few-channel-loading is detected (for example, the total input signal power in a certain sub-band becomes much lower than the normal case) , one or more narrow linewidth optical sources (dummy light sources) whose wavelengths are located in that sub-band are injected into the EDFA 603. Therefore, optical powers of all sub-bands are always maintained at a similar level in most of the channel-loading conditions, and the SHB effect can then be reduced. This technical solution does not use any CE, but uses dummy light to keep the EDFA 603 always working under a condition similar to the full-loading condition.

[0082] As can be seen from the above, all the solutions require the OCM for detecting signal channel allocation. In addition, it is necessary to arrange the passive / active CE to compensate for the gain shape deformation caused by SHB, or a set of dummy lights to fill into the vacancies of the missing input signal channels.

[0083] Therefore, the above solutions inevitably have the following disadvantages. In a first aspect, the OCM and the CE are slow devices, their response time is about a few seconds, while the agile communication system requires fast responses of 0 to 100 μs. In a second aspect, the OCM and the CE are complex and expensive  devices, so that the cost of installing them in the amplifier is high; and the Raman gain (active CE) is not always accessible (the Raman amplifier cannot be implemented in all networks) . In a third aspect, the dummy light sources are expensive, and the usage of the dummy light sources sacrifices available bandwidth.

[0084] Based on this, as shown in FIGS. 5A to 5C, some embodiments of the present disclosure provide an optical amplifier 100. The optical amplifier 100 includes a first tap 111, a plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120, a wavelength detection assembly 130 and a control circuit 140. The first tap 111 is configured to receive an input WDM signal. The plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 are connected in sequence, and a first amplification stage assembly 121 in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 is coupled to a first output of the first tap 111. The wavelength detection assembly 130 is coupled to a second output of the first tap 111, the wavelength detection assembly 130 is configured to detect signals with wavelengths less than or equal to a predetermined value. The control circuit 140 is coupled to the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 and the wavelength detection assembly 130. The amplification stage assembly 120 includes a doped fiber 120a and a pump source 120b coupled to thereto; the control circuit 140 is coupled to the pump source 120b, and is configured to tune a power of the pump source 120b.

[0085] The input of the first tap 111 is used for receiving the input WDM signal (as the input signal of the optical amplifier 100) , the power of the input WDM signal is split into two portions by the first tap 111, one portion (94 to 99%of the power of the input WDM signal) is output from the first output of the first tap 111 to the first amplification stage assembly 121, and the other portion (1 to 6%of the power of the input WDM signal) is output from the second output of the first tap 111.

[0086] The wavelength detection assembly 130 may be directly connected to the second output of the first tap 111 or connected to the second output of the first tap 111 through other devices.

[0087] The number of the amplification stage assemblies 120 is not specifically limited. For example, the number of the amplification stage assemblies 120 is two, three, four or even more. In the amplification stage assembly 120, the doped fiber 120a is pumped by the corresponding pump source 120b.

[0088] The doped fiber 120a is gain medium. When light is incident into the doped fiber 120a, due to absorption of the medium, energy carried by the incident light excites electrons in the medium to a high energy level. Through the relaxation phenomenon, the electrons transition from the high energy level to a ground state to release energy, which emits photons and produces amplification. The pump source 120b provides light for the doped fiber 120a. In a case where powers of the pump source 120b are different, intensities of the light emitted by the pump source 120b are different, and different gains are obtained.

[0089] For example, the pump source 120b is a pump diode. By controlling the driving current of the pump diode, the intensity of the light emitted by the pump diode can be controlled. That is, when the powers of the pump source 120b are different, corresponding driving currents are different.

[0090] For example, the pump source 120b is a single-mode semiconductor laser diode, and the single-mode diode can generate light with a wavelength in the vicinity of 980 nm (e.g., 974 nm) .

[0091] The doped fiber is not limited in the embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the doped fiber is an erbium doped fiber (EDF) , a bismuth doped fiber, or other doped fibers that present detrimental gain inhomogeneity. It should be noted that the detrimental gain inhomogeneity means that the gain shape is not flat.

[0092] In some embodiments, the doped fiber is the EDF. The optical amplifier 100 based on the EDF has the advantages of low operation wavelength loss, wide frequency range, high gain and low noise. The following description will be made by taking the EDF as an example.

[0093] In the optical amplifier 100 provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure, when the detection result of the wavelength detection assembly 130 for signals with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value satisfies a certain condition, the SHB self-compensation scheme is used to improve the gain shape deformation induced by the SHB effect. The SHB self-compensation scheme is implemented by changing the pump  tuning logic among the plurality of amplification stages. The key idea of the SHB self-compensation scheme is to reduce the pump power injected into certain amplification stage (s) to below a certain threshold (typically several tens of milliwatts, such as 40 mw) , forcing the amplification stage to work under the inverse SHB. Since other amplification stages still operate under the normal SHB, the inverse SHB and the normal SHB compensate each other, thereby reducing the overall SHB effect.

[0094] For comparison, in the optical amplifier shown in FIG. 6A, a pump power variable optical attenuator (PVOA) is inserted in each amplification stage. Based on the influence of the inverse SHB in the EDF, by using the PVOA for pump tuning, some EDF sections in certain amplification stage (s) are forced to work under the inverse SHB, so as to compensate for SHB. FIGS. 6B and 6C illustrate gain shapes without the SHB compensation and with the SHB compensation under a partial-loading (few-channel-loading) condition, respectively. It can be seen that the maximum gain distortion at 1524 nm becomes worse using the SHB compensation. This phenomenon only happens when signal channels with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm exist in the partial-loading condition. FIGS. 6D and 6E illustrate occurrences of SHB improvement and SHB degradation obtained through experiments in the partial-loading condition, respectively. It can be seen that, under the condition of SHB improvement, the gain improvement of the signal channels with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm occurs less frequently; and under the condition of SHB degradation, the gain distortion of the signal channels with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm occurs more frequently.

[0095] The reasons behind the phenomenon of degradation of gain distortion are as follows. When the SHB compensation is based on the inverse SHB, the first amplification stage is usually strongly pumped, and the first amplification stage generates high power of ASE light. Since the ASE light is generated in a distributed manner at the first amplification stage, the overlap between the ASE power and the fiber gain profile is insufficient to generate a high level of normal SHB. When the ASE light enters the inverse SHB (low pump power or pump power is off) , significant inverse SHB will be generated due to large overlap between the ASE power and the absorption of the fiber. Therefore, the inverse SHB generated by the ASE light will dominate.

[0096] As shown in FIG. 7A, FIG. 7A shows the gain shape under the normal SHB effect. For the optical signal with the wavelength in the vicinity of 1530nm, the normal SHB generates a gain dip at the center wavelength of the signal and generates a gain bump on the shorter wavelength side. FIG. 7B shows the gain shape under the inverse SHB effect. For the optical signal with the wavelength in the vicinity of 1530nm, the inverse SHB generates a gain bump at the center wavelength of the signal and generates a gain dip on the shorter wavelength side. When the inverse SHB generated by the ASE light dominates, the overall gain distortion induced by the ASE light will have a shape closer to that shown in FIG. 7B. That is, optical signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm will be over-compensated, and have a large gain drop.

[0097] However, in the embodiments of the present disclosure, the wavelength detection assembly 130 can detect signals with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value, and when the predetermined value is set to 1529 nm and under the partial-loading condition, the control circuit 140 can adopt, according to the detection result of the wavelength detection assembly 130 on whether there are the signals with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value, different strategies to improve the gain shape deformation induced by the SHB effect. That is, under the partial-loading condition, the SHB self-compensation scheme is adopted in the case where the wavelength detection assembly 130 detects that there are not the signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm, and according to the pump tuning order, the pump power injected into certain amplification stage (s) is reduced to below a certain threshold (typically several tens of milliwatts, such as 40 mw) , so that the amplification stage is forced to work under inverse SHB; and the SHB self-compensation scheme in not adopted in the case where the wavelength detection assembly 130 detects that there are the signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm, and the gain shape deformation induced by the SHB effect is improved by controlling each pump power (i.e., driving current) and attenuating the signals (i.e., tuning the signal VOA) .

[0098] FIG. 8 is a comparison diagram of gain shapes before and after the optical amplifier 100 shown in FIG. 5A adopts an adjustment strategy in the case where there are "short wavelength" channels (with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm) under the partial-loading condition. Due to the presence of "short wavelength" channels (with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm) , the SHB self-compensation scheme is not adopted, but the scheme of attenuating the signals is adopted. It can be seen that, although the locally sharp gain distortion induced by the SHB effect still exists after the gain shape is adjusted, the locally sharp gain distortion induced by the SHB effect is suppressed to a certain extent.

[0099] FIG. 9 is a comparison diagram of gain shapes before and after the optical amplifier 100 shown in FIG. 5A adopts an adjustment strategy in the case where there are not "short wavelength" channels (with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm) under the partial-loading condition. It can be seen that, due to the absence of "short wavelength" channels (with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm) , the SHB self-compensation scheme is adopted. Thus, the locally sharp gain distortion induced by the SHB effect is suppressed greatly through the inverse SHB effect.

[0100] Based on the above description, the optical amplifier 100 provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure has the following advantages: there is no need to use an OCM device for detecting the allocation of signal channels, and there is also no need to use a CE device, thereby reducing the cost of the optical amplifier; compared to providing a PVOA in each amplification stage, by providing the wavelength detection assembly, the optical amplifier provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure may select an appropriate adjustment strategy based on the detection result of the wavelength detection assembly, thereby ensuring the flatness of the overall gain shape, avoiding serious gain distortion of signal channels with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value; and additional costs are avoided because there is no need to use the PVOA.

[0101] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 5A to 5C, the optical amplifier 100 further includes a first splitter 151, a first photodetector 161, a second tap 112, and a second photodetector 162. An input of the first splitter 151 is coupled to the second output of the first tap 111. The first photodetector 161 is coupled to a first output of the first splitter 151, the wavelength detection assembly 130 is coupled to a second output of the first splitter 151. An input of the second tap 112 is coupled to a last amplification stage assembly in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120, and a first output of the second tap 112 is configured to send an output WDM signal. The second photodetector 162 is coupled to a second output of the second tap 112. The control circuit 140 is further coupled to the first photodetector 161 and the second photodetector 162, and the control circuit 140 is configured to tune the power of the pump source based on detection results of the first photodetector 161, the second photodetector 162 and the wavelength detection assembly 130.

[0102] The first splitter 151 is an optical power splitter that can split the optical signal output from the second output of the first tap 111 into two portions according to a certain power ratio, and the two portions are then input into the first photodetector 161 and the wavelength detection assembly 130, respectively. Here, the power ratio of the two portions is not limited. For example, the power ratio of the two portions is 50: 50. That is, the powers of the two portions are equal. In this way, both the wavelength detection assembly 130 and the first photodetector 161 may receive sufficient optical signal power.

[0103] The input of the second tap 112 is used for receiving the output WDM signal output from the last amplification stage assembly in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120. The power of the output WDM signal is split into two portions by the second tap 112, one portion (98 to 99%of the power of the output WDM signal) is output from the first output of the second tap 112 as the output signal of the optical amplifier 100, and the other portion (1 to 2%of the power of the output WDM signal) is output from the second output of the second tap 112.

[0104] Based on the reading of the first photodetector 161, the power of the input signal input to the optical amplifier 100 can be obtained, and based on the reading of the second photodetector 162, the power of the output signal output by the optical amplifier 100 can be obtained. In addition, based on the reading of the first photodetector 161,  the control circuit 140 can determine whether the input signal is in partial load. The control circuit 140 can also calculate an average gain level of the optical amplifier 100 based on the input signal power and the output signal power, and select the appropriate adjustment strategy, based on the detection result of the wavelength detection assembly 130, to lock the average gain to a target gain level. Since the photodetector is a conventional device with a low cost, the arrangement of the photodetector in the optical amplifier 100 will not significantly increase the cost.

[0105] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 5A to 5C, the wavelength detection assembly 130 includes an optical low pass filter (OLPF) 131 and a third photodetector 132. An input of the OLPF 131 is coupled to the second output of the first tap 111; an input of the third photodetector 132 is coupled to an output of the OLPF 131, and an output of the third photodetector 132 is coupled to the control circuit 140.

[0106] The OLPF 131 may be directly coupled to the second output of the first tap 111 or may be indirectly coupled to the second output of the first tap 111 through other devices. For example, as shown in FIG. 5A, in the case where the first splitter 151 is coupled to the second output of the first tap 111, the OLPF 131 is coupled to the second output of the first splitter 151. That is, the OLPF 131 is coupled to the second output of the first tap 111 through the first splitter 151.

[0107] The OLPF 131 can block optical signals with wavelengths greater than the predetermined value and allow optical signals with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value to pass through. The predetermined value is not limited in the embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the predetermined value is 1529 nm, and in this case, the OLPF 131 allows optical signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm to pass through.

[0108] Based on this, when there are not wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm in the input signal, the OLPF 131 blocks all signals passing through, and the reading of the third photodetector 132 is close to 0; when there are wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm in the input signal, the OLPF 131 blocks all signals with wavelengths greater than 1529 nm and allows signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm to pass through, and in this case, the third photodetector 132 can receive the wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm, and its reading will be greater than a certain value. Thus, based on the combination of the OLPF 131 and the third photodetector 132, it is easy to detect whether wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value exist in the input signal, and the structure of the wavelength detection assembly 130 is simple.

[0109] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 5A to 5C, the optical amplifier 100 further includes at least one signal VOA 170. A signal VOA 170 is coupled between two adjacent amplification stage assemblies and coupled to the control circuit 140, and the control circuit 140 is further configured to tune the attenuation value of the signal VOA 170.

[0110] The embodiments of the present disclosure do not limit the number of signal VOAs 170 and the position of any signal VOA 170. For example, in a case where the number of the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 is greater than 2, one signal VOA 170 is arranged between the first amplification stage assembly 121 and the second amplification stage assembly 122, and / or one signal VOA 170 is arranged between the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123. For another example, in a case where the number of the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 is greater than or equal to 2, two or more signal VOAs 170 are arranged between the first amplification stage assembly 121 and the second amplification stage assembly 122; or there is the third amplification stage assembly 123, two or more signal VOAs 170 are arranged between the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123.

[0111] When the wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value exist, the control circuit 140 may improve the gain shape deformation induced by the SHB effect by adjusting the attenuation value of the signal VOA 170.

[0112] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 5A to 5C, the optical amplifier 100 further includes at least one GFF 180. A GFF 180 is coupled between two adjacent amplification stage assemblies. The GFF 180 may keep the gain shape of the optical amplifier 100 flat under the full-loading condition.

[0113] The embodiments of the present disclosure do not limit the number of GFFs 180 and the position of any GFF 180. For example, in a case where the number of the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 is greater than 2, one GFF 180 is arranged between the first amplification stage assembly 121 and the second amplification stage assembly 122, and / or one GFF 180 is arranged between the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123. For another example, in a case where the number of the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 is greater than or equal to 2, two or more signal GFFs 180 are arranged between the first amplification stage assembly 121 and the second amplification stage assembly 122; or there is the third amplification stage assembly 123, two or more GFFs 180 are arranged between the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123.

[0114] In some embodiments, as shown in FIG. 5A, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 include at least three amplification stage assemblies, and the at least three amplification stage assemblies are arranged independently of each other.

[0115] For example, as shown in FIG. 5A, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 include three amplification stage assemblies, which are the first amplification stage assembly 121, the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123. The first amplification stage assembly 121 includes a first doped fiber 1211 and a first pump source 1212 coupled thereto. The second amplification stage assembly 122 includes a second doped fiber 1221 and a second pump source 1222 coupled thereto. The third amplification stage assembly 123 includes a third doped fiber 1231 and a third pump source 1232 coupled thereto.

[0116] In some other embodiments, as shown in FIG. 5B, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 include at least three amplification stage assemblies. In amplification stage assemblies except for the first amplification stage assembly 121, at least two adjacent amplification stage assemblies share one pump source.

[0117] For example, as shown in FIG. 5B, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 include three amplification stage assemblies, which are the first amplification stage assembly 121, the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123. The first amplification stage assembly 121 includes a first doped fiber 1211 and a first pump source 1212 coupled thereto. The second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123 share the same pump source (e.g., a second pump source 1222) . That is, the second pump source 1222 belongs to both the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123. Thus, a second doped fiber 1221 of the second amplification stage assembly 122 and a third doped fiber 1231 of the third amplification stage assembly 123 are pumped by the same pump source.

[0118] For another example, as shown in FIG. 5C, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 include four amplification stage assemblies, which are the first amplification stage assembly 121, the second amplification stage assembly 122, the third amplification stage assembly 123 and the fourth amplification stage assembly 124. The first amplification stage assembly 121 includes a first doped fiber 1211 and a first pump source 1212 coupled thereto. The second amplification stage assembly 122 includes a second doped fiber 1221 and a second pump source 1222 coupled thereto. The third amplification stage assembly 123 and the fourth amplification stage assembly 124 share the same pump source (e.g., a third pump source 1232) .

[0119] The above description is made by taking an example where two amplification stage assemblies share one pump source. In actual applications, three or more amplification stage assemblies may share one pump source, which is not limited in the embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0120] In amplification stage assemblies, except for the first amplification stage assembly 121, in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120, in the case where at least two adjacent amplification stage assemblies share one pump source, the pump source of the first amplification stage assembly 121 can be operated at a higher power, and the shared pump source can be operated at a lower power or even turned off under the partial-loading condition.

[0121] Since at least two amplification stage assemblies share one pump source, the number of pump sources may  be reduced.

[0122] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 5B and 5C, the optical amplifier 100 further includes a second splitter 152. An input of the second splitter 152 is coupled to one pump source, and outputs of the second splitter 152 are coupled to doped fibers of the at least two amplification stage assemblies sharing the pump source.

[0123] As shown in FIG. 5B, in an example where the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123 share the same pump source (e.g., the second pump source 1222) , the input of the second splitter 152 is coupled to an output of the second pump source 1222, a first output of the second splitter 152 is coupled to the second doped fiber 1221 of the second amplification stage assembly 122, and a second output of the second splitter 152 is coupled to the third doped fiber 1231 of the third amplification stage assembly 123.

[0124] The second splitter 152 is an optical power splitter. Through the connection manner described above, the second splitter 152 can split the pump power of the pump source into portions according to a certain power ratio, and the portions are then input into doped fibers of the amplification stage assemblies sharing the pump source, respectively. Here, the power ratio of the portions is not limited. For example, the pump power can be split into multiple portions with equal power to ensure that the doped fiber of each amplification stage assembly sharing the pump source can receive the same pump power.

[0125] Some embodiments of the present disclosure provide an optical communication system, as shown in FIG. 10, the optical communication system includes a plurality of ROADM nodes 200 and a plurality of optical amplifiers 100 each according to any one of the above embodiments. At least one optical amplifier 100 is coupled between two adjacent ROADM nodes 200.

[0126] In some embodiments, the optical communication system is applied to the physical layer of the OTN. Referring to FIG. 10, which is a schematic diagram of a simplified OTN link, the OTN link includes a plurality of OMSs that are cascaded. Each OMS includes a plurality of OTSs, and each OTS includes one optical amplifier and one transmission fiber segment (for example, a length of which is several tens of kilometers) located behind the optical amplifier. At least part of optical amplifiers in the OTN link are the optical amplifiers 100 described above.

[0127] For the structure of the ROADM node 200, reference may be made to the description of the ROADM node 902, which will not be repeated here.

[0128] In the optical communication system provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure, since the optical communication system includes the optical amplifier 100, the optical communication system has the same benefits as the optical amplifier 100, which will not be repeated here.

[0129] Some embodiments of the present disclosure provide a control method of an optical amplifier. As shown in FIGS. 5A to 5C, the optical amplifier 100 includes a first tap 111, a plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120, a wavelength detection assembly 130 and a control circuit 140 coupled to the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 and the wavelength detection assembly 130; the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 are connected in sequence, and a first amplification stage assembly 121 in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 is coupled to a first output of the first tap 111; the wavelength detection assembly 130 is coupled to a second output of the first tap 111, and an input of the first tap 111 is configured to receive an input WDM signal; the amplification stage assembly 120 includes a doped fiber 120a and a pump source 120b coupled thereto. As shown in FIG. 11, the control method includes the following steps.

[0130] In S200, the control circuit 140 obtains a reading of the wavelength detection assembly 130 in response to an input power of the input WDM signal received by the first tap 111 being less than a predetermined portion of a full-loading signal power.

[0131] The input power of the input WDM signal received by the first tap 111 is less than the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power, which can be considered that the optical amplifier 100 operates under the few-channel-loading condition. In this case, the SHB effect generated in the EDF will affect the gain shape. The input  power of the input WDM signal is greater than or equal to the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power, which can be considered that the optical amplifier 100 operates under the full-loading condition.

[0132] In some implementations, the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power is half of the full-loading signal power. In other implementations, the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power is greater than half of the full-loading signal power. For example, the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power is 55%, 57%, 60%, 62%, 65%or 70%of the full-loading signal power. The predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power may be set according to the actual situation and is not limited to the above values.

[0133] It should be noted that there is no limitation on how the control circuit 140 obtains the input power of the input WDM signal in this step.

[0134] In S201, the control circuit 140 triggers a special AGC process to lock an average gain of the optical amplifier 100 to a target gain level in response to the reading of the wavelength detection assembly 130 being less than a preset value.

[0135] The special AGC process includes: tuning pump powers of pump sources 120b in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 in a preset order, and the preset order is that a pump power of a pump source 120b in the first amplification stage assembly 121 is tuned last.

[0136] In the case where the reading of the wavelength detection assembly 130 is less than the preset value, it can be considered that there are not signals with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value (e.g., 1529nm) in the input WDM signal. Thus, the control circuit 140 triggers the special AGC process.

[0137] When the operation condition of the optical amplifier 100 changes from the full load to the few-channel load, according to the special AGC process, the pump power of the pump source 120b in one or more amplification stage assemblies, except for the first amplification stage assembly 121, in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 is tuned (reduced) by the control circuit 140 first, so as to generate the inverse SHB effect in the adjusted amplification stage assembly. The pump power of the pump source 120b in the first amplification stage assembly 121 is finally tuned, which generates the normal SHB effect. In this way, the gain shape deformation induced by the inverse SHB effect is used for compensating for the gain shape deformation induced by the SHB effect, thereby making the overall gain shape of the optical amplifier 100 flat.

[0138] In some implementations, in the special AGC process, the pump power of the pump source 120b to be tuned first is tuned to a value in a range of 0 to 40 mw. In this way, it may be ensured that the amplification stage assembly where the pump source 120b to be tuned first is located operates under the inverse SHB.

[0139] For example, the pump power of the pump source 120b to be tuned first is adjusted to 0, 10 mw, 20 mw, 30 mw, or 40 mw.

[0140] It should be noted that, in order to ensure that the input WDM signal input in the first amplification stage assembly 121 has the high gain and low noise, the first amplification stage assembly 121 is typically strongly pumped; and therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the pump power of the pump source in the first amplification stage assembly 121 is tuned last.

[0141] In the control method provided in the embodiments of the present disclosure, under the few-channel-loading condition, the wavelength detection assembly 130 detects signals with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value, and in the case where the signals with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value do not exist, the control circuit 140 adopts the SHB self-compensation scheme to improve the gain shape deformation induced by the SHB effect, so as to make the gain shape flat.

[0142] In some embodiments, referring to FIG. 5A, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 include three amplification stage assemblies 120, which are the first amplification stage assembly 121, the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123. The pump sources 120b included in the first amplification stage assembly 121, the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123 are the first pump source 1212, the second pump source 1222 and the third pump source 1232,  respectively. The first pump source 1212 is used for pumping the first erbium doped fiber 1211 of the first amplification stage assembly 121, the second pump source 1222 is used for pumping the second erbium doped fiber 1221 of the second amplification stage assembly 122, and the third pump source 1232 is used for pumping the third erbium doped fiber 1231 of the third amplification stage assembly 123.

[0143] The preset order is that pump powers of the second pump source 1222, the third pump source 1232 and the first pump source 1212 are tuned in sequence, or pump powers of the third pump source 1232, the second pump source 1222 and the first pump source 1212 are tuned in sequence.

[0144] For example, after the control circuit 140 triggers the special AGC process, the control circuit 140 first reduces the driving current of the second pump source 1222, then reduces the driving current of the third pump source 1232, and finally reduces the driving current of the first pump source 1212. Thus, the second amplification stage assembly 122 can operate under the inverse SHB.

[0145] For another example, after the control circuit 140 triggers the special AGC process, the control circuit 140 first reduces the driving current of the third pump source 1232, then reduces the driving current of the second pump source 1222, and finally reduces the driving current of the first pump source 1212. Thus, the third amplification stage assembly 123 can operate under the inverse SHB.

[0146] For yet another example, after the control circuit 140 triggers the special AGC process, the control circuit 140 simultaneously reduces the driving currents of the second pump source 1222 and the third pump source 1232, and then reduces or increases the driving current of the first pump source 1212. Thus, both the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123 can operate under the inverse SHB.

[0147] In some embodiments, referring to FIG. 5B, the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 include three amplification stage assemblies 120; the pump source included in the first amplification stage assembly 121 is the first pump source 1212, the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123 share the second pump source 1222. That is, the first amplification stage assembly 121 includes the first erbium doped fiber 1211 and the first pump source 1212, the second amplification stage assembly 122 includes the second erbium doped fiber 1221, the third amplification stage assembly 123 includes the third erbium doped fiber 1231, and the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123 share the same pump source (i.e., the second pump source 1222) .

[0148] The preset order is that pump powers of the second pump source 1222 and the first pump source 1212 are tuned in sequence.

[0149] After the control circuit 140 triggers the special AGC process, the control circuit 140 first reduces the driving current of the second pump source 1222, and then reduces the driving current of the first pump source 1212. Thus, both the second amplification stage assembly 122 and the third amplification stage assembly 123 can operate under the inverse SHB.

[0150] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 5A and 5B, the optical amplifier 100 further includes at least one signal VOA 170, a signal VOA is coupled between two adjacent amplification stage assemblies 120 and coupled to the control circuit 140. As shown in FIG. 11, the control method further includes S202.

[0151] In S202, the control circuit 140 triggers a normal AGC process and tunes attenuation of the signal VOA 170 in response to the reading of the wavelength detection assembly 130 being greater than or equal to the preset value.

[0152] The normal AGC process includes: tuning the pump powers of the pump sources 120b in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 synchronously, so that the average gain of the optical amplifier 100 is locked to the target gain level.

[0153] In the case where the reading of the wavelength detection assembly 130 is greater than or equal to the preset value, it can be considered that there are signals with wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value in the input WDM signal. Thus, the control circuit 140 triggers the normal AGC process. When the operation  condition of the optical amplifier 100 changes from the full load to the few-channel load, based on the normal AGC process, the control circuit 140 synchronously reduces the pump powers of the pump sources in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 with a fixed power ratio; and in order to improve the gain decrease of the gain shape, the attenuation value of the signal VOA 170 is also tuned by the control circuit 140 (e.g., increasing the attenuation value by 1 to 2 dB) .

[0154] In this way, it may avoid the problem of gain distortion degradation (over-compensation) caused by using the SHB self-compensation scheme in the case where there are wavelengths less than or equal to the predetermined value.

[0155] In some embodiments, as shown in FIG. 11, the control method further includes S300.

[0156] In S300, the control circuit 140 triggers a normal AGC process in response to the input power of the input WDM signal received by the first tap 111 being greater than or equal to the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power.

[0157] The normal AGC process includes: tuning the pump powers of the pump sources 120b in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 synchronously, so that the average gain of the optical amplifier 100 is locked to the target gain level.

[0158] In the case where the input power of the input WDM signal received by the first tap 111 is greater than or equal to the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power, the optical amplifier 100 operates under the full-loading condition. Therefore, the control circuit 140 triggers the normal AGC process to lock the average gain of the optical amplifier 100 to the target gain level, and in the normal AGC process, the pump powers of the pump sources 120b in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 are set according to the fixed power ratio. In this case, the gain shape deformation accumulated in the EDF sections is compensated by the GFF, and the overall gain shape deformation at the output port of the optical amplifier 100 is negligible.

[0159] In some embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 5A to 5C, the optical amplifier 100 further includes a first splitter 151, a first photodetector 161, a second tap 112 and a second photodetector 162. An input of the first splitter 151 is coupled to the second output of the first tap 111; the first photodetector 161 is coupled to a first output of the first splitter 151, and the wavelength detection assembly 130 is coupled to a second output of the first splitter 151. An input of the second tap 112 is coupled to a last amplification stage assembly in the plurality of amplification stage assemblies 120 (e.g., the third amplification stage assembly 123 in FIGS. 5A and 5B or the fourth amplification stage assembly 124 in FIG. 5C) . A first output of the second tap 112 is configured to send an output WDM signal, and a second output of the second tap 112 is coupled to the second photodetector 162.

[0160] In this case, the control method further includes S100 to S102.

[0161] In S100, the control circuit 140 obtains the input power of the input WDM signal according to a reading of the first photodetector 161.

[0162] According to the reading of the first photodetector 161, the control circuit 140 can obtain the input power of the input WDM signal received by the first tap 111.

[0163] The above-mentioned S200 and S300 are performed based on S100. After obtaining the input power in S100, the control circuit 140 compares the input power and the predetermined portion of the full-loading signal power (e.g., 50%of the full-loading signal power) , and selects one of S200 and S300 to execute based on the comparison result.

[0164] In S101, the control circuit 140 obtains the output power of the output WDM signal according to a reading of the second photodetector 162.

[0165] According to the reading of the second photodetector 162, the control circuit 140 can obtain the output power of the output WDM signal output by the second tap 112.

[0166] In S102, the control circuit 140 determines the average gain of the optical amplifier 100 according to the input power and the output power.

[0167] The control circuit 140 calculates the average gain level of the optical amplifier 100 according to the input power and the output power, selects an appropriate adjustment strategy according to the detection result of the wavelength detection assembly 130, and finally locks the average gain to the target gain level.

[0168] It should be noted that, S100 and S101 can be performed simultaneously; or S100 is performed first, and then S101 is performed; or S101 is performed first, and then S100 is performed.

[0169] The following provides a detailed example based on FIG. 5A to clearly describe the control process of the optical amplifier 100. As shown in FIG. 12A, the control process includes S401 to S406.

[0170] In S401, the control circuit 140 obtains the input power of the input WDM signal according to the reading of the first photodetector 161, and determines whether the optical amplifier 100 operates under the few-channel loading condition by comparing the input power and half of the full-loading signal power.

[0171] In S402, when the input power is greater than or equal to half of the full-loading signal power, the control circuit 140 executes S403; when the input power is less than half of the full-loading signal power, the control circuit 140 executes S404.

[0172] In S403, the control circuit 140 triggers the normal AGC process, and according to the input power and the output power of the output WDM signal that is obtained through the second photodetector 162, the control circuit 140 tunes the pump powers of the pump sources of the three amplification stage assemblies synchronously, so as to lock the gain of the optical amplifier 100 to the target gain level.

[0173] In S404, the control circuit 140 determines whether there are signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm in the input WDM signal according to the reading of the wavelength detection assembly 130; if there are signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm, the control circuit 140 executes S405; if there are not signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm, the control circuit 140 executes S406.

[0174] In S405, the control circuit 140 triggers the normal AGC process and adjusts the attenuation of the signal VOA 170 (e.g., increasing the signal attenuation by 1 to 2dB) .

[0175] In S406, the control circuit 140 triggers the special AGC process, and according to the order of "the second pump source 1222, the third pump source 1232, the first pump source 1212" , or the order of "the third pump source 1232, the second pump source 1222, the first pump source 1212″ , the control circuit 140 lowers the pump powers of these three pump sources until the average gain of the optical amplifier 100 is locked to the target gain level.

[0176] FIG. 13 is a histogram of a maximum gain deviation before and after the control method of S401 to S406 are adopted to adjust the gain shape in a case of a nominal gain level of 21 dB, and it can be seen that the gain deviation can be compensated by an average of about 47%, and can be compensated by about 26%in the worst case.

[0177] The following provides a detailed example based on FIG. 5B to clearly describe the control process of the optical amplifier 100. As shown in FIG. 12B, the control process includes S501 to S506.

[0178] In S501, the control circuit 140 obtains the input power of the input WDM signal according to the reading of the first photodetector 161, and determines whether the optical amplifier 100 operates under the few-channel loading condition by comparing the input power and half of the full-loading signal power.

[0179] In S502, when the input power is greater than or equal to half of the full-loading signal power, the control circuit 140 executes S503; when the input power is less than half of the full-loading signal power, the control circuit 140 executes S504.

[0180] In S503, the control circuit 140 triggers the normal AGC process, and according to the input power and the output power of the output WDM signal that is obtained through the second photodetector 162, the control circuit 140 tunes the pump powers of the pump sources of the three amplification stage assemblies synchronously, so as to lock the gain of the optical amplifier 100 to the target gain level.

[0181] In S504, the control circuit 140 determines whether there are signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm in the input WDM signal according to the reading of the wavelength detection assembly 130; if there are  signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm, the control circuit 140 executes S505; if there are not signals with wavelengths less than or equal to 1529 nm, the control circuit 140 executes S506.

[0182] In S505, the control circuit 140 triggers the normal AGC process and adjusts the attenuation of the signal VOA 170 (e.g., increasing the signal attenuation by 1 to 2dB) .

[0183] In S506, the control circuit 140 triggers the special AGC process, and according to the order of "the second pump source 1222, the first pump source 1212" , the control circuit 140 lowers the pump powers of these two pump sources until the average gain of the optical amplifier 100 is locked to the target gain level.
