Abstract

A display sheet or wallet for storing and displaying trading cards or stickers, the sheet or wallet formed from a blank (200') having a main body part separated into multiple sections by at least one marker in each section, each section having a pattern of die- cut slits (40a, 40b, 40c) for receipt of a card or sticker. The holder may comprise a storage part and an enclosure-forming part, wherein the storage part has multiple sections, adjacent sections being separated by fold or crease lines, each section having a pattern of die-cut slits for forming tabs to retain at least one card or sticker (1a'-1n') within that section, and wherein the enclosure-forming part comprises a rear- forming part (12a), a front-forming part (12b) and a closure flap (14).

[0001] A BLANK FOR A HOLDER AND A HOLDER FOR PLANAR ITEMS

[0002] Field of the Invention.

[0003] The present invention relates generally to packaging for planar items, such as photographs, cards, stickers or the like, particularly but not exclusively to holders that allows for convenient access to, and display of, the items stored therein.

[0005] It is often desirable to store and / or display different types of cards and stickers, as well as photographs and other memorabilia. One well known example is a trading (or collectible) card which is a small card, usually of thick paper, which contains an image of a certain person, place or thing often accompanied by printed information relating to that person, place or thing. Trading cards often relate to famous personalities, such as footballers from particular premier league teams or baseball stars, and collectors buy and trade these cards to try to get all the players from the team they support and / or to obtain rare cards that may be particularly collectible. However, many other types of trading card exist displaying a wide variety of things, such as collectible vehicles, fictional characters and so on.

[0006] Generally, cards and stickers that relate to a particular collection, such as an individual sports team, are stored and displayed in a photograph-type album, a sticker album or simply collected all together in a storage tin. All these types of storage have their drawbacks. For example, a sticker album may relate to a particular team but once a sticker is adhered to a page of the album it is no longer possible to ‘trade’ that sticker. A photograph-type album is not normally team specific and can be quite large in size. It normally requires pages to be turned to view all the items contained in the album, making it difficult to determine a full range of items stored in the album at one time. Storage tins do not allow for the display of the cards or stickers and provide no organization to assist in trading and display of the cards or stickers that are stored within the tin.

[0007] It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved packaging or holder for planar items, such as cards and stickers that overcomes, or at least alleviates, the abovementioned problems. Summary of the Invention.

[0008] According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a blank for a holder for temporarily receiving a planar item such as a card or sticker, the blank comprising a main body part separated into multiple sections by at least one marker in each section, each section having a pattern of die-cut slits for receipt of a card or sticker.

[0009] The marker may comprise a printed pattern for defining sections of the holder for receiving each card or sticker. Additionally, or alternatively, the marker may comprise at least one crease or fold line between each section. More preferably, a set pattern of die-cut slits is provided in each section, each slit defining a tab for retaining a part of the card or sticker. In a preferred embodiment, each set pattern of die-cut slits allows a card or sticker to be retained on each side of the section of the holder. For example, a series of eight die-cut slits may be provided around the periphery of each section, wherein alternating slits provide tabs for each side of the section, such as four corner slits provide tabs for holding a card or sticker on one side and four slits between each corner slit provide tabs for holding a card or sticker on the other side.

[0010] More preferably, the blank is an elongated rectangular piece of material provided with a series of fold or crease lines separating the blank into the multiple sections, each section having a predefined pattern of die-cut slits to allow at least one card or sticker to be retained therein, whereby the sections may be folded together in the form of a concertina.

[0011] Preferably, each section is dimensioned to be slightly larger than a standard trading card or sticker and is provided with a pattern of die-cut slots around its periphery.

[0012] Preferably, one end of the blank is provided with an enclosure-forming member to contain the sections once folded into a concertina. More preferably, the enclosureforming member is formed integrally with the other multiple sections from a single sheet of material. In a preferred embodiment, the enclosure-forming member comprises a rear-forming part, a front-forming part and a closure flap. Preferably, the front-forming part is continuous with the multiple sections, being separated from an adjacent section my fold or crease lines. The front-forming part is preferably provided with a slot. The rear-forming part is preferably continuous with the front-forming part, again being separated therefrom by fold or crease lines. More preferably, a pair of parallel fold or crease lines are provided between the front and rear forming parts, the distance between the pair of lines being such as to accommodate all the multiple sections when folded together and holding cards or stickers on opposing sides of each section.

[0013] The rear and / or front forming parts may be provided with a pattern of die-cut slits for receipt of a card or sticker. More preferably, only one side of the rear-forming part is provided with slits for receipt of a card or sticker.

However, it is to be appreciated that other closure mechanisms may be provided, albeit it is preferred for the holder to be formed from a single piece of material without the need for attachment of other parts.

[0016] It is to be appreciated that the parts of the enclosure-forming member may be provided at alternative ends of the blank, for example the rear-forming part may be provided at one end and the front-forming part and closure flap provided at the other end of the blank. In a preferred embodiment, the blank for forming the holder comprises multiple adjacent sections arranged side by side along the blank, each section dimensioned to receive one card on each side of each section. However, the invention is not limited thereto and larger blanks may be provided for example, wherein multiple cards may be retained on each side of each section.

Preferably, each section is divided into four quadrants, two upper quadrants and two lower quadrants, each quadrant being dimensioned to receive a trading card or sticker and provided with a pattern of dis-cut slits for retaining a card or sticker to the quadrant. More preferably, each section is provided with four sets of a repeating pattern of die-cut slots, one for each quadrant, the pattern being such as to allow retention of cards of both sides of each quadrant.

[0018] The material of the blank for forming the entire holder is preferably a durable, tear resistant material that is fully recyclable, most preferably being a recyclable polypropylene sheet material. Each lockable and extendable holder / wallet is preferably made from a single blank piece of material which is produced with no additional parts.

[0019] The preferred application for the holder of the present invention is for storing and displaying trading cards, stickers and the like. In a preferred embodiment, the holder may be provided in colours and / or graphics representing a particular sports team and enables the user to both store, display and change the cards or stickers contained within the holder.

The production of the holder according to the present invention is preferably a full colour lithographic process produced onto a solid polypropylene sheet material of which the thickness has been chosen for its non-tear resistant capability. In a preferred embodiment sheets with multiple blanks are provided having the desired artwork applied, for example, being colours associated with different sports teams or other memorabilia. The full colour sheets are printed, preferably with the print being applied to both sides of the polypropylene sheet with inks being chosen that will adhere to the sheet successfully. A specific die-cut tool with a series of sharp blades manufactured with exact specifications to match the artwork applied for each holder may then provide the required pattern of die-cut slits, slots, tabs and the multiple fold lines. The individual blanks for each holder may then be stripped out of the sheets to provide individual flat holders, individually folded into an accordion shape and fastened together using the self-locking mechanism formed by the slot and tab / tongue to form the finished wallet for receiving trading cards, stickers or the like.

[0048] The present invention provides a convenient, durable and aesthetically pleasing packaging product for storing and displaying trading cards, stickers and the like. In a preferred embodiment, the holder may be provided in colours and / or graphics representing a particular sports team and enables the user to both store, display and change the cards or stickers contained within the holder.

[0049] Figures 1A to 4B illustrate a holder in the form of a display wallet according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. Each lockable and extendable wallet 2 is made from a single blank piece of material 200 which is produced with no additional parts. The sheet is made from a durable, tear resistant material that is fully recyclable, most preferably being a recyclable polypropylene sheet material.

[0050] Referring in particular to Figures 1 A to 2B, the blank 200 is configured so that both sides 200, 200’ may temporarily hold stickers or cards to make maximum use of the space within the assembled wallet 2, allow for easy display and removal of the cards or stickers held within the wallet and provide a compact, sealed wallet for storage of the items. A number of blanks may be produced from an elongated sheet, further details of which are provided below in relation to the production process. Each blank has a main elongated rectangular body part divided up into multiple regular rectangular sections 10a, 10b, 10c - 10n, being separated from each other by crease or fold lines 30. Each section is dimensioned to be slightly larger than a standard trading card or sticker 1a, 1b, 1c - 1n and is provided with a pattern of die-cut slots 40a, 40b, 40c around its periphery. In the preferred embodiment shown, each section has four corner die-cut slits 40c, an upper and lower die-cut slit 40a between the two upper and two lower corner slits and two middle die-cut slits 40b between an upper and a lower corner slit.

[0051] One end of the blank 200, 200’ is provided with card / sticker receiving sections up to the end of the sheet while the opposing end is provided with an enclosure-forming section comprising a rear-forming part 12a, a front-forming part 12b and a flap 14. The rear and front forming parts are separated by two parallel fold lines 32a, and the rear forming part 12a and the flap 14 are also separated by two parallel fold lines 32b the same distance apart as parallel fold lines 32a. The distance between each set of fold lines 32a, 32b is configured to be such as to be able to receive all the multiple sections 10a-10n with the cards or stickers 1a-1n held therein when the holder is in its closed configuration (see Figure 4B). The front-forming part 12b is also provided with a slot 24 and the flap 14 has a tab 18 provided with a die-cut slit 22 providing a tongue 22a.

[0052] As is evident from Figures 1 A and 1 B, as well as 2A and 2B both sides of the blank 200, 200’ are configured to receive cards or stickers 1, T and the sections may then be folded into an accordion shape to provide a compact holder or wallet. The rear forming part 12a can be brought around to lie against the end section 10n and then the flap 18 extends across the front-forming part 12b such the tongue 22a created by the die-cut slit 22 is received within the slot 24 to close the wallet, thereby forming an envelope surrounding the secured stickers or cards. The wallet may be opened and extended outwardly so all the stickers or cards on one side can be viewed, without the cards / stickers on the other side being visible. Inverting the extended wallet enables the cards / stickers on the opposing side to be viewed.

[0054] Figures 6A to 6C illustrate a holder according to another embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment, all the cards or stickers are temporarily securable within a single sheet for display. Each holder 400 comprises a sheet having multiple repeat patterns of die-cut slits 402 configured to receive trading cards or stickers 1 therein. Additionally, each pattern of slits 402 is provided with a frame template 404 printed onto the card to assist in insertion of the card or sticker in the correct manner. Again, the holder is made of a recyclable polypropylene sheet and requires no other components for the temporary securement of the trading cards or stickers. The sheet may also have graphics printed thereon relevant to a particular team, sport or other collectible.

[0055] Figures 7A to 9B illustrate a holder in the form of a display wallet 500 according to another preferred embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment, the wallet is configured to be of larger size, such as A4 dimensions, to hold multiple cards or stickers 1 in each section. Each lockable and extendable wallet 500 is again made from a single blank of material 600 which is produced with no additional parts. The sheet is made from a durable, tear resistant material that is fully recyclable, such as a recyclable polypropylene sheet material.

In this embodiment, each section is dimensioned to be slightly larger than four standard trading cards or stickers arranged in pairs one above the other and is provided with four sets of a repeating pattern of die-cut slots 650a, 650b, 650c, 650d in each quadrant (A to D) of the rectangular section. Two sets (650a, 650b) are positioned in the top half of each section for receiving one pair of cards / stickers and two sets (650c, 650d) are positioned in the bottom half of each section for receiving the other pair (see, in particular, Figs. 7B and 7C).

[0057] The repeating patterns of die-cut slits shown in the embodiment allow four cards 1, T to be held within both sides of each section 602n as shown in Figures 7A and 7B. The preferred repeating pattern is discussed further in relation to Figure 7C. Each complete section has six slits a, b, c, a’, b’, c’ provided at uniform intervals across the top and the bottom of the section, with four slits d, e, f, g provided along each side between each upper and lower corner slits a, a, a’, a’. These slits serve to provide tabs to retain the upper edge and one side edge of each card of the top pair (in quadrants A and B) and to retain the lower edge and one side edge of each card of the bottom pair (in quadrants C and D). Additionally, internally located slits are provided to hold the other two edges of each card or sticker. Specifically, in the illustrated embodiment, four central slits j are provided in the centre of the section with two vertical opposing vertical slits k above and below the central slits j, each pair k substantially midway between the middle slits c, c’ and the central slits j. Two horizontal opposing slits I are also provided either side of the central slits j, again each pair being midway between the central slits j and the middle side slits e, f.

[0058] In this manner, the same pattern of slits is provided for each quadrant A to D of the rectangular section. Furthermore, the slits positioned at the four corners of each quadrant can retain a card one side of the section, with the slits positioned between the corners of each quadrant retaining a card on the opposing side of the quadrant. While this is the preferred arrangement of slits to provide satisfactory securement of cards on both sides of each section, it is to be appreciated that fewer or more slits may be provided.

[0059] Referring again to Figures 7A and 7B, one end of the blank 600 is provided with card / sticker receiving sections up to the end of the sheet while the opposing end is provided with an enclosure-forming section comprising a front-forming part 620a, a rear-forming part 620b and a flap 640. [0060] Both sides of the blank 600, 600’ are thus configured to receive cards or stickers and the sections may then be folded into an accordion shape to provide a compact holder or wallet, as shown in 8A to 9B. The front forming part 320a can be brought around to lie against the end section 602n and then the rear-forming part 320b lies against the first section 602a and flap 640 extends across the front-forming part 620a such the tongue 622a created by the die-cut slit 622 is received within the slot 624 to close the wallet, thereby forming an envelope surrounding the secured stickers or cards.

[0061] Thus, the present invention provides display sheets and display wallets for storing and displaying trading cards, such as those for sports teams, for example football, basketball, American football, rugby and base ball. Ideally, the wallet will be provided as a pocket-size holder of trading cards but may also be provided in a larger size, such as A4 size. The wallet is entirely recyclable and can made from a single piece of material, enabling the wallet to be mass produced cheaply to serve a substantial market. The wallet also enables both stickers and trading cards to be easily displayed and traded / exchanged because the stickers and trading cards can be easily removed and reinserted into the wallet using the die-cut slits. The production of the wallets from a single piece of material also allows for them to be adapted to particular sports teams and other collectibles’ branding by printing appropriate graphics onto the blank prior to construction of the holder. The arrangement of the sections and die-cut slits also allows the wallet to be completing enclosed when in its storage configuration, with no visibility of the card or sticker on the outside of the closed wallet.

Claims

CLAIMS:

1. A blank for a holder for temporarily receiving a planar item such as a card or sticker, the blank comprising a main body part separated into multiple sections by at least one marker in each section, each section having a pattern of die-cut slits for receipt of a card or sticker.

2. The blank as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the marker comprises a printed pattern for defining sections of the holder for receiving each card or sticker.

3. The blank as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the marker comprises at least one crease or fold line between each section.

4. The blank as claimed in claim 1 , claim 2 or claim 3, wherein a set pattern of die-cut slits is provided in each section, each slit defining a tab for retaining a part of the card or sticker.

5. The blank as claimed in claim 4, wherein each set pattern of die-cut slits allows a card or sticker to be retained on each side of the section of the holder.

6. The blank as claimed in claim 5, wherein a series of die-cut slits are provided around the periphery of each section, wherein alternating slits provide tabs for each side of the section, preferably wherein corner slits provide tabs for holding a card or sticker on one side and slits between each corner slit provide tabs for holding a card or sticker on the other side.

The blank as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the blank is an elongated rectangular piece of material provided with a series of fold or crease lines separating the blank into the multiple sections, each section having a predefined pattern of die-cut slits to allow at least one card or sticker to be retained therein, whereby the sections may be folded together in the form of a concertina.

8. The blank as claimed in claim 7, wherein one end of the blank is provided with an enclosure-forming member to contain the sections once folded into a concertina.

9. The blank as claimed in claim 8, wherein the enclosure-forming member is formed integrally with the other multiple sections from a single sheet of material.

The blank as claimed in claim 7 or claim 8, wherein the enclosure-forming member comprises a rear-forming part, a front-forming part and a closure flap, preferably wherein the front-forming part is continuous with the multiple sections, being separated from an adjacent section my fold or crease lines.

11. The blank as claimed in claim 10, wherein the front-forming part is provided with a slot and the rear-forming part is continuous with the front-forming part, being separated therefrom by fold or crease lines.

The blank as claimed in claim 10 or claim 11, wherein a pair of parallel fold or crease lines are provided between the front and rear forming parts, the distance between the pair of lines being such as to accommodate all the multiple sections when folded together and holding cards or stickers on opposing sides of each section.

13. The blank as claimed in any one of claims 10, 11 or 12, wherein the rear and / or front forming parts are provided with a pattern of die-cut slits for receipt of a card or sticker, preferably wherein only one side of the rearforming part is provided with slits for receipt of a card or sticker.

The blank as claimed in claim 12 or claim 13, wherein the rear-forming part is continuous with the closure flap, being separated therefrom by fold or crease lines, preferably wherein a pair of parallel fold or crease lines are provided between the rear-forming part and the closure flap, the distance between the pair of lines being substantially the same as the distance between the parallel lines between the front and rear forming parts.

The blank as claimed in any one of claims 11 to 14, wherein the closure flap is provided with a tab, and the tab is provided with die-cut slit forming a tongue for receipt within the slot of the front-forming part or the tab itself is received within the slot of the front-forming part to maintain closure of the device.

16. The blank according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the blank for forming the holder comprises multiple adjacent sections arranged side by side along the blank, each section dimensioned to receive one card or sticker on each side of each section.

The blank according to any one of claims 1 to 15, wherein multiple cards or stickers retained on each side of each section, preferably wherein each section is divided into four quadrants, two upper quadrants and two lowerquadrants, each quadrant being dimensioned to receive a card or sticker and provided with a pattern of dis-cut slits for retaining a card or sticker to the quadrant, more preferably wherein each section is provided with four sets of a repeating pattern of die-cut slots, one for each quadrant, the pattern being such as to allow retention of cards of both sides of each quadrant.

A holder for temporarily receiving a planar item, such as a trading card or sticker, the holder comprising a storage part and an enclosure-forming part, wherein the storage part comprises multiple sections, adjacent sections being separated by fold or crease lines, each section having a pattern of die-cut slits for forming tabs to retain at least one card or sticker within that section, and wherein the enclosure-forming member comprises a rearforming part, a front-forming part and a closure flap.

19. The holder as claimed in claim 18, wherein the front-forming part is continuous with the multiple sections, being separated from an adjacent section my fold or crease lines and the rear-forming part is continuous with the front-forming part, being separated therefrom by fold or crease lines.

20. The holder as claimed in claim 19, wherein a pair of parallel fold or crease lines are provided between the front and rear forming parts, the distance between the pair of lines being such as to accommodate all the multiple sections when folded together and holding cards or stickers on opposing sides of each section.

21. The holder as claimed in claims 18, 19 or 20 wherein, the front-forming part is provided with a slot.

The holder as claimed in claim 20 or claim 21, wherein the rear-forming part is continuous with the closure flap, being separated therefrom by fold or crease lines and preferably wherein a pair of parallel fold or crease lines are provided between the rear-forming part and the closure flap, the distance between the pair of lines being substantially the same as the distance between the parallel lines between the front and rear forming parts.

23. The holder as claimed in claim 22, wherein the closure flap is provided with a tab, wherein the tab is provided with a die-cut slit forming a tongue for receipt within the slot of the front-forming part or the tab itself is received within the slot to maintain closure of the device.

The holder as claimed in any one of claims 18 to 23, wherein the holder has a compact storage configuration and an extended display configuration, the multiple sections are folded and stored within the enclosure-forming member in the compact storage configuration and are extended outwardly to display the cards or stickers held therein in the extended display configuration.
