Description

[0001] EMULSION COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING COMBINATIONS OF BIOPOLYMERS

[0002] Field of the Invention

[0003] The present invention relates to emulsion compositions for cosmetic application, including hair and skin cleaning and care compositions, that comprise a mixture of biopolymers, namely any two oftara gum, algin, konjac gum, and xanthan, as well as water, at least one emulsifier, and at least one further cosmetically acceptable ingredient, optionally in specific amounts and ratios, wherein the biopolymers serve as rheology modifiers to thicken and texturize said compositions.

[0004] Background of the Invention

[0005] Cosmetic and personal care compositions containing substantial amounts of water typically comprise one or more thickeners or rheology modifiers. These serve the purpose to ensure a sufficiently high viscosity and to provide for the texture and usability expected by the consumers. To ensure that these compositions have an aesthetically pleasing appearance and texture under various conditions, a variety of thickeners and rheology modifiers are used, the amounts and ratios of which need to be carefully balanced to provide for the desired properties.

[0006] To date, many of the existing products on the market use synthetic polymeric thickeners, for example polyacrylates. While these provide for good stabilization and allow fine control of rheological properties, there is a general trend and demand for more natural components that are made from renewable resources and have good biodegradability. While various compounds that can be used for such purposes and meet these requirements are known and used in the field, many of them suffer from lower performance compared to the commonly used synthetic compounds. Furthermore, they are often more susceptible to various environmental influences that lead to degradation and break-down and thus negatively impact composition appearance and texture.

[0007] There is thus still need in the art for rheology modifying systems that on the one hand provide good performance in that they provide for good viscosity control, appearance, stability, and texture, and on the other hand meet the demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable materials that are obtainable from renewable sources and readily biodegradable.

[0008] Summary of the Invention

[0009] The present invention provides a rheology modifier system that meets this need. The inventors have surprisingly found that combinations of any two or more of tara gum, xanthan gum, konjac gum, and algin can advantageously be used to control rheology in a variety of personal care emulsion compositions, such as skin care creams and body lotions, serums, fluids, gel creams, conditioning lotion and creams or sun care lotion and creams while providing for a smooth and aesthetically pleasing texture.

[0010] In a first aspect, the present invention is therefore directed to an emulsion composition suitable for a cosmetic application comprising a) at least two of (a1) tara gum, (a2) xanthan gum, (a3) algin, and (a4) konjac gum; b) water; and c) at least one emulsifier; and d) at least one further cosmetically acceptable ingredient different from (a) to (c); wherein the relative amount of each component comprised in the composition is not higher than 99% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition.

[0011] In another aspect the present invention is directed to the use of the inventive compositions for application to keratinous materials, such as human skin and hair, in particular for hair and skin care.

[0012] In still another aspect, the present invention relates to a process for styling or conditioning hair or achieving caring effects to skin, comprising contacting the hair or skin with the inventive composition.

[0013] Detailed Description

[0014] The term “at least one”, as used herein, relates to 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or more. If used herein in relation to any component, said term refers to the number of chemically different entities that fall under the definition of said component, but not to the total number of molecules. “At least one emulsifier”, for example, thus means that at least one type of specific emulsifier is included, but that also two or more different types of emulsifiers may be present in the composition.

[0015] “At least one of X and Y”, as used herein, means that only one of the two types of compounds X and Y needs to be present, i.e. either at least one X or at least one Y. However, it also covers embodiments in which both types of compounds are present.

[0016] Numeric values specified herein without decimal places refer to the full value specified with one decimal place if not stated otherwise. For example, “60 %” means 60.0 %, if not stated otherwise.

[0017] All percentages given herein relate to % by weight if not explicitly indicated otherwise. The value always relates to the total weight of the composition if not indicated otherwise.

[0018] The expression “about”, if used herein in relation to a numerical value, means said value ±10%, typically ±5%.

[0019] Numeric ranges specified in the format “(in / from) x to y” include the values specified. If several preferred ranges are given in this format, all ranges resulting from the different possible combinations of the different endpoints are also intended to be encompassed by the present invention.

[0020] “Free of’, as used herein, may mean that the respective component is not purposively added and thus only present in minor amounts, for example in form of impurities or degradation products. In various embodiments, “free of’ thus means that the respective compound or group of compounds is present in amounts less than 0.5 wt.-%, less than 0.1 wt.-%, or less than 0.01 wt.-%, relative to the total weight of the composition. In some embodiments, this may mean that the respective compound is not detectable in a given composition by commonly applied measurements.

[0021] “Consisting essentially of’, as used herein, means that the referenced components form at least 50 %, preferably at least 60, 70, 80 or 90 % by weight of the total composition weight.

[0022] All parameters of a composition referred to herein, such as pH, viscosity, etc. are given under standard conditions, i.e. at 20°C and standard pressure (1 atm, 101.325 kPa), if not explicitly indicated otherwise.

[0023] In the context of the present invention, the term “rheology modifier” is understood to mean substances that alter the deformation and flow properties of material. This term includes organic or inorganic compounds, usually macromolecules, which alter the intermolecular forces through formation of cohesion (intramolecular) or adhesion (intermolecular) in such a way that the viscosity of the coherent phase of the formulation is preferably increased.

[0024] If reference is made to charged compounds, it is understood that these may be used in the corresponding salt form and may thus include a common counterion for said charged entity. The counterions for anions are typically metal ions, such alkaline metal ions, in particular sodium or potassium, or alkaline earth metal ions, such as magnesium or calcium ions. Counterions for cations include anions selected from halogen ions, such as chloride, as well as sulfate, phosphate and the like.

[0025] These and other aspects, features, embodiments, and advantages of the invention become apparent to the skilled person from the following detailed description and claims. Each feature or embodiment from one aspect of the invention similarly applies to any other aspect, if not explicitly indicated otherwise. For example, this means that all aspects and embodiments disclosed herein in relation to the compositions similarly apply to the claimed uses and methods and vice versa. Furthermore, the examples provided are intended to illustrate but not limit the invention.

[0026] The present invention is based on the inventors’ surprising finding that the combined use of any two of tara gum, xanthan gum, konjac gum and algin can overcome some of the issues observed if using only one of them and is particularly suited for viscosity adjustment and texture control of emulsion formulations.

[0027] For example, it has been observed that if xanthan gum alone is used as a rheology modifier, the viscosity is increased, but high thickening performance needs high concentration which in turn results in unappealing texture that may occur sticky, slimy and / or stringy and does not show the desired smooth, homogeneous texture. However, xanthan gum also has the advantages of having good transparency, requiring no neutralization, being usable for emulsions and in the presence of surfactants.

[0028] On the other hand, if algin is used alone, it requires divalent cations to activate the gel-forming properties and is highly susceptible to electrolytes as well as forms a jelly-like texture at higher concentrations. However, it has the advantage that its viscosity-inducing properties are finely tunable by addition of divalent cations and chelating agents.

[0029] If tara gum alone is used, it has good viscosity adjustment properties but weak stabilization performance in formulations and it creates a pilling effect at high concentrations. It has however advantages with having a very smooth and natural flow behavior and creating highly homogenous texture.

[0030] Still further, if konjac gum is used alone, it has the best thickening properties of all 4 biopolymers listed herein and is highly salt resistant but is insofar challenging to use, as it needs a stabilizing partnerto prevent gelling or change of texture over time and also tends to gel at higher concentrations. Also its capability to stabilize oil droplets in an emulsion is comparably low. Its texturizing properties are however better than those of xanthan gum and algin, but not as good as those of tara gum.

[0031] Of the four biopolymers algin and konjac gum have the best thickening performance, while xanthan and tara have lower thickening performance. Xanthan gum and algin provide good stabilizing properties, while tara gum and konjac gum only have very low stabilizing effects. Tara gum is however the best biopolymer with respect to its texturizing properties, with xanthan gum and algin being inferior to tara gum in this aspect.

[0032] It has now been found that the combined use of any two of the four compounds can overcome the individual drawbacks and allows to combine the advantages of the respective individual components in that the resulting emulsion compositions are stable and also show a smooth texture.

[0033] The present invention is thus directed to emulsion compositions suitable for a cosmetic application (or cosmetic composition or personal care composition) comprising

[0034] (a) at least two of (a1) tara gum, (a2) xanthan gum, (a3) algin, and (a4) konjac gum;

[0035] (b) water; and

[0036] (c) at least one emulsifier; and

[0037] (d) at least one further cosmetically acceptable ingredient different from (a) to (c); wherein the relative amount of each component comprised in the composition is not higher than 99% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition.

[0038] The feature “wherein the relative amount of each component comprised in the composition is not higher than 99% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition” means that of 100 % by weight of the composition, one of (a), (b), (c), and (d) can only make up to 99 wt.-% of the total weight (in which case the remainder of 1 % by weight comprises the three others). Further preferred amounts of the individual components are given herein below.

[0039] The compositions suitable for cosmetic application include personal care compositions, such as hair and skin care compositions. It is understood that the compositions described herein can also consist essentially of or consist of the listed ingredients. “Personal care composition”, as used herein, relate to all compositions known to the person skilled in the art which are exclusively or primarily intended to be used externally on the human body or in its oral cavity for cleaning, care, protection, maintaining a good condition, perfuming, changing the appearance or for the purposes of influencing body odor. The personal care compositions may be cosmetic compositions, with these two terms being used interchangeably herein. Said compositions include formulations for body care, face care, skin care, hand care and hair care as well as decorative cosmetics, e.g. a body milk, creams, lotions, aftershave lotions, serums, fluids, foundations, products for protecting against UV rays as sun lotions, products for eliminating body odor such as deodorant creams and antiperspirants, conditioners, and styling products. The personal care compositions of the present invention can be any of the above. Preferably, they are selected from conditioners, styling creams, skin care creams, gel creams, lotions, serums and fluids.

[0040] In various embodiments, the composition is suitable for application to a keratinous surface, such as human hair or skin, in particular suitable for conditioning or styling hair or is a skin care composition. In various embodiments, the composition is used for the treatment of a keratinous surfaces or material. In all instances, if reference is made herein to “keratinous surface”, this includes a keratinous material, such as human hair or skin. A “keratinous material” refers to material that comprise the fibrous (poly)peptides commonly referred to as “keratin”, typically in an amount of at least 50 % by weight, or at least 70 % by weight.. Human hair, for example, consists of about 95 % by weight keratin. “Treatment”, as used in this context, refers to care or repair effects the composition has on the keratinous surface.

[0041] In various embodiments, the compositions neither are food or beverage compositions nor are suitable as such.

[0042] The personal care compositions of the invention are aqueous compositions, i.e. contain water, typically even substantial amounts of water.

[0043] In various embodiments, the water content of the compositions is at least 30 % by weight relative to the total weight of the composition. In various embodiments, the compositions may comprise at least at least 35, at least 40, at least 45, at least 50, at least 55 or at least 60 wt.-% water. In some embodiments the water content is in the range of from 65 to 90 wt.-% or 65 to 85 wt.-%, for example 65 to 80 wt.% or 67 to 75 wt.-%.

[0044] The compositions of the invention are in the form of emulsions, for example O / W or W / O emulsions. Said emulsions are characterized by comprising at least two separate liquid phases, the dispersed phase (e.g. in form of droplets) and a continuous phase (in which the droplets are dispersed). The dispersed phase is preferably homogenously distributed in the continuous phase so that there is no visible phase separation. “O / W emulsions” refers to emulsions in which the continuous phase is a water or aqueous phase and the dispersed phase is an oil / hydrophobic phase. In contrast, “W / O emulsion” relates to emulsions in which the oil / hydrophobic component forms the continuous phase and the aqueous phase is the dispersed phase. In various embodiments, the emulsion composition of the invention is an O / W emulsion.

Such sugar esters are obtained by reacting a fatty acid with the sugars and creating an ester bond by reaction of the carboxylic acid group and any one of the hydroxyl groups.

[0083] In various other embodiments, in which component (a) does not comprise konjac gum (a4), the at least one emulsifier may also comprise or be an anionic emulsifier, such as selected from the group consisting of stearoyl glutamate, cetearyl sulfate, cetyl phosphate, and a-hydroxy (carboxylic) acid esters as well as combinations thereof. In such embodiments, where the emulsifier comprises or consists of at least one anionic emulsifier, preferably stearoyl glutamate, cetearyl sulfate, cetyl phosphate, an a-hydroxy acid ester or a mixture thereof, component (a) of the composition does not comprise konjac gum (a4)

[0084] Further examples of suitable anionic emulsifiers are, in each case (also) in the form of their salts, fatty acids, ether carboxylic acids, acyl sarcosides with 8 to 24 carbon atoms in the acyl group, acyl taurides with 8 to 24 carbon atoms in the acyl group, acyl isethionates with 8 to 24 carbon atoms in the acyl group, acyl glutamates with 8 to 24 carbon atoms in the acyl group, sulfosuccinic acid mono- and dialkyl esters with 8 to 24 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and sulfosuccinic acid monoalkyl polyoxyethyl esters with 8 to 24 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and 1 to 6 oxyethyl groups.

[0098] The addition products of ethylene oxide and / or propylene oxide with fatty alcohols, fatty acids, alkylphenols, glycerol mono- and diesters and sorbitan mono- and diesters of fatty acids or with castor oil are known, commercially available products. Average degree of alkoxylation corresponds to the ratio of the amounts of substance of ethylene oxide and / or propylene oxide and substrate with which the addition reaction is carried out. Depending on the degree of ethoxylation, the emulsifiers can emulsify water in oil or oil in water.

[0099] C12 / 18 fatty acid mono- and diesters of addition products of ethylene oxide to glycerol are also known as refatting agents in cosmetic preparations.

[0101] Polyglyceryl-4 diisostearates I polyhydroxystearates / sebacates (Isolan GPS) or diisostearoyl polyglyceryl- 3 diisostearates (eg Isolan PDI) are also suitable.

[0102] Reaction products of poly-12-hydroxystearic acid with polyglycerols of the following homolog distribution have been shown to be particularly advantageous as nonionic emulsifiers (preferred amounts are given in brackets):

[0103] Glycerine: 5 to 35 (15 to 30)% by weight

[0105] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the glyceryl ester used is the diester of polyhydroxystearic acid, polyglyceryl-2 dipolyhydroxystearate, which is sold, for example, by BASF Personal Care and Nutrition GmbH under the name Dehymuls® PGPH alone or mixtures thereof under the brands Eumulgin® VL 75 (Mixture with Lauryl Glucosides in a weight ratio of 1 :1 ; O / W emulsifier) or Dehymuls® SBL (W / O emulsifier) are sold by BASF Personal Care and Nutrition Deutschland GmbH.

[0106] As described above, substances such as lecithins and phospholipids can also be used as nonionic emulsifiers. Examples of natural lecithins are the cephalins, which are also referred to as phosphatidic acids and are derivatives of 1 ,2-diacyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphoric acids. In contrast, phospholipids are usually understood to mean mono- and preferably diesters of phosphoric acid with glycerol (glycerol phosphates), which are generally considered to be fats. In addition, sphingosines or sphingolipids can also be used.

[0107] Silicone emulsifiers, for example, can be contained as nonionic emulsifiers. These can be selected, for example, from the group of alkyl methicone copolyols and I or alkyl dimethicone copolyols, in particular from the group of compounds which are characterized by the following chemical structure: in which X and Y are independently selected from the group H (hydrogen) and branched and unbranched alkyl groups, acyl groups and alkoxy groups with 1-24 carbon atoms, p represents a number from 0-200, q represents a number from 1-40, and r represents a number from 1-100.

[0108] An example of silicone emulsifiers are dimethicone copolyols, which are available from Evonik under the trade names AXIL® B 8842, ABIL® B 8843, ABIL® B 8847, ABIL® B 8851 , ABIL® B 8852, ABIL® B 8863, ABIL® B 8873 and ABIL® B 88183. Another example is the Cetyl PEG I PPG-10 / 1 Dimethicone (Cetyl Dimethicone Copolyol), which Evonik sells under the brand name ABIL® EM 90. Another example is the cyclomethicone dimethicone copolyol, which Evonik sells under the trade names ABIL® EM 97 and ABIL® WE 09. Also Lauryl PEG / PPG-18 / 18 Methicone (lauryl methicone copolyol), under the trade name Dow Corning® 5200 Formulation Aid from Dow Corning Ltd. and Octyl Dimethicone Ethoxy Glucoside from Wacker are suitable.

[0109] In various embodiments, the emulsifier (c) may be an alk(en)yl polyglycoside. Nonionic emulsifiers from the group of the alkyl monoglycosides or alkyl oligoglycosides are particularly skin-friendly and can therefore be used for the purposes of the invention either alone or in combination. Alk(en)yl (poly)glycosides (APGs) may be compounds of formula (I),

[0110] R1O-[G]P(I) in which R1is an alkyl and / or alkenyl radical with 4 to 22 carbon atoms, G is a sugar radical with 5 or 6 carbon atoms and p is numbers between 1 and 10. While such compounds are commonly referred to as alkyl glycosides or alkyl poly glycosides or alkyl oligo glycosides it is also possible that the alkyl moiety is an alkenyl radical. The term APG, as used herein, thus is intended to cover both alkyl and alkenyl (poly)glycosides.

[0111] APGs of the form claimed here can be obtained by the relevant methods of preparative organic chemistry. The APGs can be derived from aldoses or ketoses with 5 or 6 carbon atoms. While various sugar units may be used, in various embodiments, the sugar units of the APGs are derived from glucose. C8-C22-alkyl mono- and oligoglycosides are known from the prior art. They are produced in particular by reacting glucose or oligosaccharides with primary alcohols having 8 to 22 carbon atoms, preferably 12 to 22, and particularly preferably 12 to 18 carbon atoms. With regard to the glycoside residue, both monoglycosides, in which a cyclic sugar residue is glycosidically bound to the fatty alcohol, and oligomeric glycosides with a degree of oligomerization up to preferably about 8 are suitable. Products that are available under the name Plantacare® contain a glucosidically bonded C8-C16-alkyl group on an oligoglucoside residue whose average degree of oligomerization is 1 to 2

[0112] The index number p in the general formula (I) indicates the degree of oligomerization (DP degree = degree of polymerization). The degree of oligomerization is a statistical mean value based on a homolog distribution customary for such technical products. The degree of oligomerization of the APGs is typically between 1 and 10 and preferably between 1 and 6. Whereas p in an individual APG molecule must always be an integer and here in particular assumes the values in the range from 1 to 6, the value p for an APG which is a mixture of different APG molecules, which differ in their individual p values, is an analytically determined calculated parameter which in most cases is a fraction. Preferably, APGs are used with an average degree of oligomerization p in the range from 1 .1 to 3.0 or from 1 .1 to 1 .8 or from 1 .2 to 1 .7.

[0113] The average degree of oligomerization here is to be understood in the sense of how it is defined in the monograph K. Hill, W. von Rybinski, G. Stoll “Alkyl Polyglycosides. Technology, Properties and Applications” (VCH-Verlagsgesellschft, 1996) in the section “Degree of polymerization” (compare pages 11-12 of the book): there it reads “The average number of glycose units linked to an alcohol group is described as the (average) degree of polymerization (DP).” In explanatory figure 2, which describes a typical distribution of dodecyl glycoside oligomers of an AOPG with a degree of DP of 1.3, the average degree of DP is also described by a corresponding mathematical formula.

[0114] The radical R1is preferably derived from primary alcohols with 4 to 12 carbon atoms and preferably 8 to 10 carbon atoms. Typical examples of suitable radicals R1are butyl, hexyl, octyl, decyl, undecyl, dodecyl and myristyl. They are derived from the saturated fatty alcohols butanol-1 , caproic alcohol (hexanol-1), caprylic alcohol (octanol-1), capric alcohol (decanol-1), undecanol-1 , lauryl alcohol (dodecanol-1) and myristyl alcohol (tetradecanol-1), as are obtained for example in the hydrogenation of technical-grade fatty acid methyl esters or in the course of the hydrogenation of aldehydes during Roelen oxo synthesis.

[0115] Preference is given to APGs which are derived from glucose and in which the radical R1is a saturated alkyl radical with 8 to 12 carbon atoms and which have an average degree of oligomerization in the range from 1.1 to 3 and in particular in the range from 1 .2 to 1 .8 and particularly preferably in the range from 1 .2 to 1 .7. These APGs can for example be prepared by reacting a sugar, in particular glucose, under acid catalysis with a fatty alcohol mixture, the fatty acid mixture used preferably being a forerunning produced during the distillative separation of technical-grade Cs -is-coconut fatty alcohol, which comprises predominantly octanol-1 and decanol-1 and also small amounts of dodecanol-1.

These ingredients are known to the skilled person and can, for example, be found in several publications, e.g. in the latest edition of the “International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary and Handbook” published by the Personal Care Products Council. Another well-known source of further suitable cosmetically acceptable ingredients is the cosmetic ingredient database Cosing. Cosing can be accessed on the internet pages of the European Commission.

[0121] Suitable further cosmetically acceptable ingredients that may individually or in combination used in the compositions of the invention as component (d) can be selected from the groups consisting of: preservatives, such as benzoic acid or sodium benzoate; humectants, such as glycerin; neutralizing agents, such as citric acid; buffering agents; metal salts, such as calcium salts, for example calcium chloride; complexing agents; emollients; surfactants other than emulsifiers (c); solubilizers; consistency agents, such as fatty alcohols; sensory modifiers; film forming agents; fragrances; opacifiers; pearlescent agents; actives, such as vitamins, plant extracts and the like; plasticizers; conditioning agents;

[0123] It is understood that multiple components of each of the above substance classes may be used in combination and that some compounds may qualify as two or more different types of compounds. It is further understood that multiple components of the above list may be used in combination and that each of these component types used in combination can again comprise more than one individual compound.

[0124] Surfactants

[0125] In one embodiment of the invention, the compositions comprise at least one surfactant as component (d) or part of component (d).

[0126] Surfactants are amphiphilic substances which can dissolve organic, nonpolar substances in water, as a result of their specific molecular structure with at least one hydrophilic and a hydrophobic molecular moiety. While the term “surfactants” also covers compounds that act as emulsifiers, these are covered by component (c). Surfactants that are included as part of component (d) are those surfactants that are not included in the definition of emulsifier or in the list of exemplary emulsifiers (c) given above.

[0127] Suitable surfactants useful in the compositions of the invention include all those generally used in the field of cosmetic and personal care compositions and known to those skilled in the art.
