Description

METHOD FOR ESTABLISHING SOCIAL NETWORK GROUPS AND SYSTEM THEREOFCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority to United States Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 637,592, filed April 23, 2024, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002] The present invention pertains to the field of digital communication technology, specifically to systems and methods for establishing spatial and temporal based social network groups.BACKGROUND

[0003] The present mode of social networking is predominantly based on a "group subscription" approach, which necessitates an invitation from an existing member for a new user to join and engage within a social network. This model, exemplified by platforms like “Facebook”, requires users to establish connections through a mutual exchange of "invitations" or “requests”. This framework, although effective in creating a sense of exclusivity and security, presents growing challenges as a user’s social network expands.

[0004] The complexity of maintaining an inclusive network group where any member has the capability to share information with every other member intensifies significantly with the growth of the group. An "all-to-all" connection becomes necessary for such comprehensive information exchange, requiring that each member establishes a direct connection with every other individual in the group. The mathematical implication that this requirement reflects can be represented by the formula N*(N-l) / 2, where "N" is the number of group members. The computational outcome of this formula illustrates an exponential increase in the number of "invite / acceptance" actions needed as the group expands. For instance, a group of 10 members requires 45 actions, a group of 100 would require nearly 5000 actions, while a group of 1000 required almost 500,000 actions. This number of actions escalates to nearly 50 million for a group of 10,000 members.

[0005] This background information is intended to provide information that may be of possible relevance to the present invention. No admission is necessarily intended, nor should be construed, that any of the preceding information constitutes prior art against the present invention.SUMMARY

[0006] It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate at least one disadvantage of the prior art.

[0007] According to embodiments, the system and method for establishing social network groups are designed for simplicity and immediacy. Essentially, individuals located within a designated spatial requirement and within an operational time frame are automatically granted the option to view and join a social network, thereby becoming members of a social network group. This approach departs from conventional social networking practices, which often require an invitation from existing members and subsequent acceptance by the individual seeking to join, or vice versa. Instead, the present invention can simplify participation in a social network to the mere act of being present within the predetermined location and during the defined time period, thereby bypassing traditional requirements for formal invitations or acceptance processes.

[0008] Utilizing the concepts of proximity (SPACE) and immediacy (TIME), the present invention provides individuals located in a specific place at a certain time, inspired by the idea of being "here" and "now", to effortlessly discover and connect with social network groups established by others in the same spatial and temporal context. This concept promotes the spontaneity of social interactions while simulating the inherent patterns of human socializing, where individuals frequently initiate interactions upon their first meeting at social events.

[0009] According to embodiments, there is provided a method for establishing a social network group. The method includes receiving, by a host server, a request, the request including location information and time information, the location information indicative of a host geographic location of a host device and the time information indicative of an operational duration of a social network. The method further includes creating the social network based on the request, the social network restricted to be operative within an operational range associated with the host geographic location for the operational duration and determining acceptance of a participant device based onreal-time geographic positioning and time data received from the participant device. Upon determination that the real-time geographic positioning data indicates the participant device is within the operational range during the operational duration, the method additionally includes granting the participant device access to the social network, wherein the social network group includes the participant device and the host device.

[0010] According to embodiments, there is provided a system for establishing a social network group. The system includes a host server configured to host the social network group requested by a host device and a host device configured to provide host device location information indicative of a host geographic location for determining an operational range, and time information indicative of an operational duration of a social network. The system further includes a participant device, the participant device configured to provide location information indicative of a participant geographic location of the participant device. The host server is configured to receive a request, the request includes the location information and time information, the host server further configured to create the social network based on the request, the social network restricted to be operative within the operational range and the operational duration, the host service further configured to determine acceptance of the participant device based at least in part on participant location information received from the participant device, and upon determination that the participant device, in real-time, is within the operational range and operational duration, grant the participant device membership to the social network.

[0011] Embodiments have been described above in conjunction with aspects of the present invention upon which they can be implemented. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that embodiments may be implemented in conjunction with the aspect with which they are described, but may also be implemented with other embodiments of that aspect. When embodiments are mutually exclusive, or are otherwise incompatible with each other, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art. [0030] The following clearly and completely describes the technical solutions in the embodiments of the present invention with reference to the accompanying drawings. The described embodiments are merely some but not all of the embodiments of the present invention. All other embodiments based on the embodiments of the present invention and obtained by a person of ordinary skill in the art without investing creative efforts shall fall within the scope of the present invention.

[0031] It has been realized that the extensive and tedious process of "invite / acceptance" associated with current social network configurations and the vast number of actions it necessitates contrasts with the dynamics of real-world social interactions. In everyday scenarios, such as social events ranging from birthday parties to sports events, individuals often engage with others, including strangers, without the preliminary step of an invitation. Real-life socializing is characterized by its spontaneous and direct nature, where people naturally begin interacting with one another upon their first meeting. The existing digital model of social networking, with its reliance on a cumbersome process of "invite / acceptance," fails to match these real-life interactionpatterns, presenting a gap in the online social engagement that the present invention aims to address. As such, there is provided a method and system for establishing and supporting spatial and temporal based social network groups forming a part of a social network platform.

[0032] Illustrated in Fig. 1 is an embodiment of a system for establishing and supporting spatial and temporal based social network groups forming a part of a social network platform. The system generally includes a host server 110, a host device 105, and multiple participant devices 115, which collectively establish and enable the functionality of one or more social networks. The host server 110 is responsible for establishing and managing social network groups created in the system. The host server 110 includes an assembly of software / firmware and hardware components designed to process and facilitate all operations related to the creation, maintenance, and termination of the social network groups. The host server 110 is positioned as the center of operation, tasked with the functions including but not limited to processing requests for creating new social network or groups, determining the eligibility of participant devices 115, and managing the flow of social data among these participant devices 115.

[0033] The host server's architecture may vary depending on specific requirements. It can exist as a cloud-based server providing extensive scalability and resilience, while capable of managing substantial data traffic and adapting dynamically to changing network demands. Alternatively, the host server can be a localized, dedicated server that caters specifically to defined areas, such as within an organization or across a corporate campus. A localized server may provide a more controlled environment, with the capacity for custom integrations and tailored services suited to the network's specific context. Whether supporting large-scale, cloud-based operations or localized, event-specific networks, the host server can promote seamless creation and operation of social network groups.

[0034] Complementary to the host server 110 are the host device 105 and the participant devices 115. The host device 105 is the device operated by a host user who seeks to establish a social network group supported by the system. The host device 105 can be a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet, equipped with a social networking application or “app” (i.e., a software application) specifically configured to execute the method for establishing spatial and temporal based social network groups. The host user can operate the host device 105 through the application and submit a creation request to the host server 110 to set up a new social network group. Thesocial networking app is equipped with functionality to determine the geographic location of the host device 105, leveraging the host device's built-in global positioning system (GPS) capabilities, and transmit geographic location data, and to interface with the host server 110 over wireless network connection. Using the host device 105 and the application, a creation request can be submitted to the host server 110 for establishing a geographically bound and time-sensitive social network group open for participant devices 115 to join.

[0035] It is to be readily understood that while the instant application refers to GPS capabilities, which can provide geolocation and time information to a suitably configured device, other forms of location determining systems may be appropriate. For example, global navigation satellite system (GNNS) may be suitable. It is also readily understood that the wireless communication system associated with a device is also capable of determination of geolocation data, for example through the process of triangulation when referencing Wi-Fi access points or cellular towers or base stations, which have predefined locations.

[0036] Once the social network group is established, the participant devices 115, operated by individual participant users, may communicate with the host server 110 to request access to the social network group created by the host user 105. The participant devices 115 would be similarly equipped with the same social networking application or a variant thereof, which is configured to discover and request access to existing social network groups in its vicinity. The participant devices 115, typically mobile phones or tablets with cellular data and built-in GPS functionalities, communicate their geographic locations to the host server. Subjecting to fulfilment of both spatial and temporal requirements associated with the social network group by each of the participant devices 115, the host server 110 enables the participant users to engage in the social network group including sharing and receiving content with other users within the group. Additionally, the social networking application may incorporate security features that support user authentication protocols for protecting the integrity of the social network groups and the privacy of the users.

[0037] According to embodiments, the system further includes one or more viewing devices 120, which are not located within the specified spatial boundary associated with the social network associated with the particular social network group. A viewing device is capable of accessing the social network for viewing only and is unable to interact with the social network group, for example a viewing device cannot post information to the social network. A viewing device canachieve viewing access to a particular social network by the selection of a social network group associated with a particular geographical location (e.g. spatial boundary) and operational time. According to embodiments, the viewing device only has viewing privileges with respect to the particular social network group during the operational time of that particular social network group. The viewing device 120 would be equipped with the same social network application or a variant thereof, which is configured to discover and request access to existing social network groups.

[0038] According to embodiments, the interconnection of the host server 110, the host device 105, viewing devices 120 and the participant devices 115 may leverage state of the art wireless and internet technologies, such as Wi-Fi and cellular networks like 4G or 5G. The system and method of establishing social network groups aim to create social network groups that allow for immediate sharing of data within a specified spatial boundary, essential for real-time and spontaneous interactions. Furthermore, some embodiments enable the viewing of data associated with a particular social network, where the viewing is provided during the temporal operation of the particular social network, without a specific requirement that the viewing device be within the spatial region associated with the specific social network or social network group.

[0039] According to embodiments, there is provided a method for establishing a social network group and a system associated therewith. The method includes receiving, by a host server, a request, the request including location information and time information, the location information indicative of a host geographic location of a host device and the time information indicative of an operational duration of a social network. The method further includes creating the social network based on the request, the social network restricted to be operative within an operational range associated with the host geographic location for the operational duration. The method additionally includes determining acceptance of a participant device based on real-time geographic positioning and time data received from the participant device. Upon determination that the real-time geographic positioning data indicates the participant device is within the operational range during the operational duration, the method further includes granting the participant device access to the social network, wherein the social network group includes the participant device and the host device.

[0040] Fig. 2 illustrates the process of establishing a spatial and temporal based social network group for spontaneous social interactions among users located within a specific geographical areaand timeframe, according to embodiments. The establishment of a spatial and temporal based social network group is realized through the determining of a spatial boundary associated with the geographic location of the host device, which defines an operational zone for the social network group. The operational zone is generally characterized as an area emanating from the geographic location of the host device, typically delineated by a radius in terms of distance.

[0041] To establish the social network group, the host user creates a creation request on the host device for establishing a social network group (step 201). The creation request includes, but not limited to, identity information of the host user and host device, location information and time information provided by the host device. In some embodiments, the creation request can include information for defining additional functionalities for the social network which will be discussed in following sections. This initial process is followed by the host device, leveraging its GPS functionality, ascertaining and relaying the relevant location information to the host server (step 202). The host user then specifies the radius for the social network group in the creation request (step 203). In general, the location information is indicative of the geographic location of the host device. The geographic location of the host device and the specified radius will serve as important parameters for defining the operability of the social network group. The location information includes GPS information reported by the host device, or it can be information pertaining to a specific location specified by the host user in the social networking app. The combination of the host device's geographic location and the specified radius establishes the spatial parameter that defines the operational zone for the social network group (step 204). This spatial parameter is further augmented by a temporal parameter, with respect to time information specified by the host user (step 205).

[0042] The time information is indicative of a period of time which the social network group is operational, that is, the operational duration for which the social network group is intended to be operative. The time information defines a temporal limit that confines the social network group’s operational period for which social interactions can take place. The operational duration may be based on a predetermined default value, or a value in terms of, for example, days, hours and minutes, specified by the host user when creating the creation request. Optionally, the time information may further include a specific date and time which the social network group will become operational. The integration of spatial and temporal parameters ensures the social networkgroup is confined to a designated area for a specified timeframe, thus constituting a digital environment tailored for social interactions among individuals within the predetermined geographic and temporal bounds. The creation process concludes with the submission of the creation request from the host device to the host server (step 206), detailing the spatial and temporal parameters for defining the operational limits of the social network group.

[0043] In some embodiments, a spatial and temporal based social network group can be established with optional operational parameters specified in the request by the host user. The host user may introduce additional operational parameters to the creation of the group, thereby providing the ability to tailor the scale of the network and manage functionality effectively. For instance, the host user may specify in the request a maximum limit of participants that can access the social network group, and / or a maximum time limit that each participant can remain in the group. Upon receiving the creation request or request, the host server acts to validate and implement the parameters, thus activating the social network group (step 207) which enables participant users within the defined parameters to discover and engage with.

[0044] Referring to Fig. 3, following the creation of the social network group with defined operational zone and duration, the system executes a set of procedures wherein the host server determines the eligibilities of participants seeking access to the group through their respective participant devices. A participant who seeks access to a spatial and temporal based social network group can utilize the social networking application on their device to create a participation request (step 301). Next, the participant device ascertains and relays location and time information to the host server (step 302). The location information is indicative of the real-time geographic location of the participant device, while the time information contains the time at which the request is created on the participant device. The participation request can be automatically created by the social networking application as the participant user selects a social network group to join. Based on the location and time information provided by the participant device, the host server determines acceptance of the participant device according to the operational zone and the operational duration defined in the social network group (step 303).

[0045] Upon verifying that a participant device’s real-time geographic location is within the operational zone and that the presence of the participant device is within the operational duration, the host server grants membership to the participant (step 304a). In some embodiments, anyparticipant device meeting the above criteria would be eligible for granting membership thus able to access the social network group to engage in social interaction, otherwise, access to the social network group will be denied (step 304b). The grant of membership effectively includes the participant device as a member of the social network group, alongside the host device. In another embodiment, membership may include different tiers of membership with each indicative of different level of access to the functionalities of the social network. For example, a basic membership may only allow the participant to view social content within the group, while an advanced membership may allow the participant to both view and share social content. According to embodiments, the granting of membership is a persistent process that ensures participants adhere to specific criteria ensuring the integrity and functionality of the social network group.

[0046] To maintain membership to the social network group, participant devices must meet the criteria set by the host user, namely staying within the defined operational zone during its defined operation duration. It is to be understood that the determination of whether a participant device meets the criteria can be determined continuously or at predetermined or random intervals. For example, if a participant moves outside the operational zone or if the operational duration has expired, their membership to the social network group will be automatically revoked. Participant devices may regularly transmit their real-time geographic positions to the host server (step 305), allowing the host server to track the eligibility of participants for membership over time, and optionally, to inform them about other active nearby social network groups they can join. The host server may perform verification of the locations of the participant devices in real time or at predetermined time intervals (step 306). If the host server determines that a participant device’s geographic location falls outside the operational zone of the social network group in any specific time, the membership granted to that participant may be revoked (step 307). This dynamic interaction between maintaining presence in a social network group and exploring new social networking groups can offer participants a rich, engaging experience, facilitating smooth transitions among social networks that align with their current location and time. This approach can enhance the relevance and spontaneity of social connections within a unified digital environment.

[0047] Fig. 4 is a flow chart detailing steps for viewing the content associated with a social network after the social network has been established, according to embodiments. The methodfurther includes receiving 320, by the host server, a request for viewing access to a particular social network. The method may include determining 322, by the host server, acceptance or denial of the viewing device. This determination can be based on the time information associated with the selected social network, namely if the request for viewing access is during the active operation of the selected social network associated with the social network group. The method may include second determining stage 323 performed, by the host server, in order to determine acceptance or denial of the viewing device. This second determination can be based on the security and global visibility settings associated with the social network. The security and global visibility settings can define a level of privacy for the particular social network, namely to mitigate general viewing access to selected social network associated with the social network group. According to some embodiments, when the security and global visibility setting is activated for a particular social network, the particular social network would not be presented for selection for requesting viewing access. However, as an exception to this feature, users may be manually added by the owner of the social network in a special exception list. The method further includes granting 324, to the viewing device, solely viewing access to the social network. According to embodiments, should the active operation of the social network cease, viewing access that was granted to the viewing device will automatically be terminated.

[0048] In an example shown in Fig. 5, spatial and temporal based social network groups A (405), B (410) and C (415) are created by different host users, Tia, Blake and Mary, respectively. Each of the groups were established with a radius relative to the current geographic location of the host user. The geographic location of the host user and the chosen radius collectively define an operational zone for each of the social network group. In addition, an operational duration is also defined for each of the social network by the respective host user.

[0049] According to the example, Tia has established social network group A 405 with an operational zone with a 50-meter radius relative to her geographic location. This essentially means anyone, during the operational duration and located within this range can detect and choose to join social network group A 405. At present, Mario and Alice, as participant users, are both located within this range and hence have the option to become part of social network group A 405.

[0050] Similarly, Blake has initiated a social network group B 410 with an operational zone of 100-meter radius. This would potentially include Alice, Paress, Monica, Christian, and Leila insocial network group B 410 if they choose to join. Notably, Alice is within the reach of both social network group A 405 and social network group B 410 due to their physical location falling within the operational zones of both of the groups, granting the choice to participate in either or both of these social network groups.

[0051] Further in a distance, Mary has formed a social network group C 415, distinctly separated from the others. When Mary establishes social network group C 415, Mary was located outside the operational zones of social network group A 405 and social network group B 410 created by Tia and Blake respectively. Now, Erica and Alex, as participant users located within the operational zone of social network group C 415, have the choice to be part of social network group C 415. Notably, neither Erica nor Alex is aware of the other existing social network group, i.e., social network group A 405 and social network group B 410, due to their locations which are outside the operational zones of these groups. The host user of each social network group has the autonomy to define how long the group will remain operative. For instance, if Blake set up social network group B 410 at 1 : 10 pm with an operational zone of 100-meter radius and an operation duration of 2 hours, then anyone within the operational zone from Blake’s location until 3: 10 pm on that same day can discover and choose to join social network group B 410.

[0052] In another embodiment, social network groups can be classified based on their "active" and "expired" statuses. These statuses are dependent on the geographic location of the participant device. For example, a participant user may find a social network group in "active" status if they are located within the defined operational zone and operational duration of the social network group. The "active" status signifies that the social network group is operational and open for that participant user to join. Using Fig. 5 as an example, assuming the time of presence of Alice, Mario and Erica fall within the defined operational durations associates with social network groups A 405, group B 410 and group C 415, Alice would find both social network group A 405 and social network group B 410 to be active social network groups. Mario, on the other hand, would only find social network group A 405 to be active, while Erica would only find social network group C 415 to be active. Conversely, a social network group is considered to have "expired" status if its defined operational duration has lapsed. An "expired" social network group is one that has ceased operations, and typically, participant users can no longer access an expired group.

[0053] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the social network group may automatically change to "archived" status upon its operational duration expiring. This change of status does not remove the social network group or its contents but alters its state of accessibility. Participant users who have been granted memberships to the social network while it was active, and have chosen to “follow” such networks, would retain access to this social network in the “archived” status. However, an archived social network may not be discoverable or accessible by new participant users. This feature maintains a connection with the content and interactions that occurred, allowing participant users who have been previously granted membership to continue interacting with the social network's historical content. Being in the archived state converts the social network into a digital repository, enabling users to look back at and engage with the exchanges and activities from the social network' when it was in the active status.

[0054] In a specific embodiment, participant users have the option to browse lists of social network groups that are “nearby” and “distant” on the social networking application. A "nearby" social network group may refer to a social network group where a participant user (participant device) is physically located within its defined operational zone and is open for that participant usertojoin. On the other hand, a"distant" social network may refer to a social network group that is out of reach by the participant user, that is, the location of the participant user (participant device) is outside of its defined operational zone.

[0055] According to embodiments, the social network application associated with a participant device includes an integrated camera application, which can be configured to control operation of a camera associated with the device upon which the social network application is operating. This integrated application within the social network application can provide security / authenticity of the image being captured by the camera. The social network application can be configured to solely enable the uploading or posting of images that are captured though use of the integrated camera application. This can inhibit the manipulation of images prior to the posting or uploading of these images to the social network group. For example, after capturing of an image, the social network application can tag the image with meta data defining the time of capture of the image and location of the device used to capture the image. This limiting of images that can be uploaded to the social network group can provide a level of authenticity to the upload image, thereby mitigating issues relating to false or fake information being distributed via the social networkgroup. As would be readily understood, similar functionality as discussed above with respect to the camera application, can be provided by a microphone application or video application which can be configured to control operation of a microphone or video recorder, respectively, associated with the device upon which the social network application is operating.

[0056] Fig. 6 illustrates how a user, Al, navigates the "Active" and "Archive" functionalities of the social networking application tailored for dynamic, location-based interaction, according to embodiments. The term “SPIME™” shown on the user interface 500 essentially refers to any social network group created based on spatial (space) and temporal (time) parameters. In this particular example, Al is both a host user and a participant user, as he has created his own social network group 510 (i.e., SPIME™), and he is also eligible to join social network groups created by other host users in his vicinity.

[0057] As shown, the user interface 500 displayed on user’ s device provides two tabs 501, 502 at the bottom, namely, “Active,” which is currently selected, and “Archive.” This allows the user to switch between viewing currently active social network groups and those that have been archived. Within the “Active” tab 501, a toggle switch 503 is provided which gives the user the ability to toggle between “Nearby” and “Distant” social network groups, a feature that categorizes social network groups based on their proximity to the user’s current geographic location, as discussed previously.

[0058] With the switch 503 toggled to "Nearby", the user sees four specific social network groups. The first group 510, labelled "Cup," indicates a social network group Al created, showcasing his role as the host. Alongside the group "Cup," there are three additional social network groups 520, 530, 540 visible due to their relevance to the user’s current geographic location based on their defined spatial and temporal parameters. Notably, one of these social network groups, named "John spime," 540 is locked (i.e., private), suggesting that access to this social network group requires authentication, either through a security token or a QR code that the user would need to acquire.

[0059] Further, the social networking application allows the user to subscribe to (i.e., follow) certain social network groups. This feature allows the user to maintain connection with selected social network groups even when these groups transition from "Nearby" to "Distant. " For instance, the user, Al, is shown to be following the social network group named "Picture" 530 but not another group "Headphones" 520. In other words, if the user moves beyond the operational range of "Picture," (leaves the radius of 200m associated with “Picture”), this social network group 530 will disappear from the “Nearby” section. Instead, the social network group 530 will transition to a “Distant” social network group and moves to the "Distant" section of the user interface 500 on Al’s device. Al will be able to continue observing the social data shared within the group "Picture" 530 by others who remain inside the operational range (i.e. radius) of “Picture”. However, as Al is no longer physically present within the defined operational range of this group 530, he will not be able to post new content in this social network group 530. Conversely, Al would not be able to observe the activity in group “Headphones” 520 since he is not a subscriber of (i.e., follower) of this social network group.

[0060] Once the group "Picture" 530 expires or the defined operational duration ends, the group automatically transitions and moves to the “Archived” section as Al is a follower of this social network group. This feature can provide Al the ability to preserving the contents of this group for future reference. However, if Al had not chosen to follow "Picture" 530, the social network group would be permanently removed from his view upon expiration. This arrangement highlights a practical function of subscribing to social network groups is to retain access to the contents therein even after the groups expire. This architecture provides that initial engagement in a social network group begins by being physically present within its operational range within the operational duration, aligning with the concept of "here and now. " Subscribing to or following a social network group, as discussed, not only facilitates tracking of activities from a distance but also provides the ability to secure an archive of the social data exchanged within the group.

[0061] According to embodiments, as illustrated in Fig. 5, Mario, who is within the operational zone of social network group A 405, would be able to discover the existence of social network group B 410 as well as potentially being a participating device, but would only be able to access social network group C 415 as a viewing device, through using the social networking application. Should Mario, at his present location, choose to join one or both of social network group A 405 and social network group B 410, he would be granted membership and access to these social network groups. However, Mario would not be able to become a participating device of social network group C 415, since Mario is located beyond the defined operational range of socialnetwork group C 415. However, Mario would be able to select and subsequently request to be permitted to be a viewing device associated with social network group C 415, provided that social network group C 415 is operative. It would be understood that if social network group C was updated to be hidden from the world, Mario would not even be provided with the option of selecting social network group C.

[0062] According to some embodiments, the system may include a feature that allows for the creation of a social network group with dynamic geographic basis. For instance, as shown in Fig. 7, this feature can be activated on the social networking application by a toggle switch “Move Spime when I move” 601. Upon activating this feature, the originally static geographic location of the social network group, as determined by the host user's (host device) location at the time of creation, becomes dynamic, reflecting the host user's (host device) dynamic location throughout the defined operational duration of the group. This transformation grants the social network group the capability to "move" concurrently with the host device. Practically, activating this feature changes the fixed operational zone to a mobile operational zone that adjusts based on the host user's (host device) changing location over the operational duration. This dynamic adjustment enables a social network group to adapt the change in geographic location of the operation zone to follow the host user's movements in real-time. This feature may be especially beneficial for localized social networks established on moving platforms, such as a cruise ship or a train, enabling the social network group to remain relevant and localized regardless of the continuously changing geographic positions of its users.

[0063] According to embodiments, establishing a localized social network with dynamic geographic basis primarily relies on location tracking of the host device by utilizing its embedded GPS functionality. This dynamic adjustment is achieved through the utilization of the GPS functionality embedded in the host device, which allows the host server to intermittently receive updates on the host device's current geographic location. In an embodiment, the updating of the host device's geographic location occurs at predetermined time intervals. Between these intervals, the system estimates the distance the host user may have travelled based on traveling speed. This estimated distance is then used to adjust the radius of the operational zone accordingly, ensuring that participant users remain within the bounds of the social network group until the nextgeographic location update is received from the host device. The system can repeat this process for each time interval as long as this feature is activated.

[0064] Consider a practical example where the initial radius of the operational zone of a social network group is 100 meters, and the host user (with his device) is on a cruise ship moving at a constant speed of 40 km / hr. The system calculates the interval for updating the host user's geographic location based on various parameters, determining a default interval of 98 seconds. Within this period, given the traveling speed of the host user (in this case, the traveling speed of the cruise ship), he would have displaced by approximately 1,078 meters. To maintain the integrity of the social network group and ensure that all participant users within the initial operational zone (100 meter radius) remain included, the system dynamically expands the radius of the operational zone by the distance covered, adds the original radius of 100m, and further adds a safety factor of 90m (the exact value of the safety factor can be variable, and can be dependent on the host’s (i.e. host device) speed and original radius), totaling an adjusted radius of 1,268 meters.

[0065] Furthermore, according to embodiments, the degree of expansion of the operational zone may vary with the traveling speed of the host user. For instance, if the host is traveling in a fast-moving vehicle at a speed of 122 km / hr, the radius of the operational zone may expand substantially to 3.5 kilometers, with the location fetching interval adjusted to 52 seconds. This feature provides the scalability that ensure the social network group remains accessible and relevant to all the participant users within the group, regardless of the speed of movement of the host user.

[0066] It would be understood that this updating of the geographic location of the host device may also be performed, randomly or continuously. In response to the change in geographic location from one time interval to the next, the system dynamically adjusts the operational zone of the social network group to center around this updated geographic location of the host device, effectively moving the operational zone of the social network group along with the host device. The host server is further tasked with processing these geographic location updates to ensure the operational zone remains relevant to the host user's real-time position.

[0067] On the other hand, according to embodiments, the system ensures the eligibilities of participant users by repeatedly tracking real-time geographical locations of the participant devices. This ongoing verification process is necessary especially in the context of a dynamic operational zone that changes in accordance with the movements of the host device. As the host device moves, the system recalculates the operational zone of the social network group in real time, constantly comparing the current positions of participant devices against these updated boundaries. This method ensures that only those participant devices found within the newly defined operational zone at any given moment are considered eligible to maintain their membership and accessibility within the social network group. This process of continuous location verification upholds the integrity of the social network group by ensuring that participation is strictly limited to users within the specified geographical proximity to the host user (host device). This feature provides a seamless, engaging experience for participants who are “following” the host user in the dynamic environment of the social network group.

[0068] According to some embodiments, participation in social network groups requires participants to undergo a one-time registration via the social networking application or website linked to the associated social networking platform. This step enables the creation of user profiles, streamlining the management and identification of users, including both host and participant users, within the social platform. Once registered, participant users desiring to access or engage with social network groups must be authenticated by the social networking platform, potentially maintained on the host server. The process of platform registration and authentication ensures that interactions within the social network groups are securely tied to the participants' registered accounts, providing a personalized and secure user experience. For instance, users of existing social networking platforms, such as Google™, Facebook™, Instagram™, and others, may be able to automatically register with and sign-in this platform, thus bypassing the default but cumbersome processes of account creation and registration.

[0069] According to embodiments, the initial authentication process involves participant users signing into the social networking platform. The system issues a sign-in token to the user’s device after a user signed-in successfully or is authenticated by other means. Sign-in tokens serve as digital evidence that a user or device is permitted to access the social networking platform. A user wishing to join a social network group within the platform must first sign in to access the social networking platform. Optionally, if users select the "remember me" option during the sign-in process, a sign-in token will be stored on their device. The token may then be utilized for allsubsequent interactions within the social network platform, minimizing the need for frequent sign- ins while maintaining robust security. This feature streamlines the authentication process and enhances the overall user experience by allowing participants to engage in social networking activities without constant authentication interruptions. Optionally, sign-in tokens may encompass unique encryption keys that establish a secure communication channel between the participant device and the host server, ensuring that all data exchanged remains encrypted and out of reach for unauthenticated individuals.

[0070] According to some embodiments, the host user can choose to secure his social network group at the time of creation of the social network group, or at a later time through a dedicated interface for updating social network group as illustrated in Fig. 7. A secured social network group would require prospective participant users to undergo a group authentication process (step 303a) before granted memberships for accessing the social network group.

[0071] As an example, the host user is provided with an option to designate his social network group as "private” through toggle switch “Private” 602. A private social network group is essentially a secured social network group that limits membership to a selected group of individuals. If the host user opts to implement additional security measures for their social network group, those wishing to join this private social network group must, in addition to satisfying the specified spatial and temporal criteria, pass certain security prerequisites to verify their eligibility. For instance, a group authentication process may be employed to verify participant identities, thus protecting the social network group from unauthorized access. This additional security layer is designed to regulate entry to specific social network groups, ensuring that only those who meet the defined security criteria can participate. Group authentication may include verifying a computer-readable code such as a QR code, scanned using the participant device’s camera. Alternatively, prospective participants may manually enter a passcode on their device for authentication purposes. In some cases, prospective participants can provide an access token stored on their devices, which fulfils the group authentication requirements for certain social network groups. The group authentication process can be configured by the host user via the security settings during the creation of the social network group. Once the spatial and temporal criteria set by the host user are met and the participant users are successfully authenticated, they would be able to join the social network group and freely access its features and functionalities.

[0072] In some embodiments, an alternate interface for configuring a type of privacy to be associated with a particular social network is illustrated in Fig. 8. The configuration options can include a “hide from the world” 610 toggle, which can be selected if a host device of the social network does not desire the particular social network to be visible or selectable by one or more potential viewing devices. The configuration options further include a “hide location” 615 toggle, which can be selected in order to anonymize the location of the host device associated with the social network.

[0073] In a further embodiment, the social networking application may include an access relaying feature which allows the users to pass on an authentication key to others for joining a social network group. For example, as depicted in Fig. 7, the feature is embodied as a toggle switch 603 "Reveal token to users with access." With this access relaying feature enabled, it permits the host user to reveal and distribute an access token, as shown in Fig. 8B, in either the form of a QR code 701 and / or an alphanumeric code 702 to other participants, thereby facilitating entry into his social network group. This option can be made available exclusively when the social network group is designated as “private”.

[0074] As an example, a scenario with a crowd of 500 individuals where an officiant (i.e., host user) initiates a communal activity by lighting a candle, aiming for every participant (i.e., participant user) in the crowd to light their own candle from this original flame. One approach to achieving this involves each participant physically approaching the officiant to light their candle directly from the officiant’s candle. Correspondingly, according to embodiments, participant users are required to use their devices to scan a QR code displayed on the host user’s device, i.e., Fig. 9B, to unlock access to the social network hosted by the host user. Alternatively, the host user may opt to verbally announce a secret token, assuming all participants are present in the same venue, thus enabling them to manually enter the token into their devices, i.e., Fig. 9 A, to gain access to the group.

[0075] According to embodiments, a second approach would involve initial participants near the officiant lighting their candles directly from his and then passing the flame to others nearby. This creates a chain reaction, spreading the flame quickly through the crowd. Similarly, according to embodiments, with the access relaying feature enabled, a participant within the group of 500 can display the QR code on the screen of his device, i.e., Fig. 9B, allowing others to scan it andauthenticate themselves for joining the social network group. This process efficiently extends access across large groups, replicating the rapid dissemination of the initial flame.

[0076] According to embodiments, the utility of the access relaying feature is highlighted in scenarios where trust may be minimal within the group. In another example, consider a host user in Times Square, NY, who establishes a private social network group. While everyone in the vicinity can see the group, they cannot access it without the access token. Enabling the access relaying feature can allow anyone present to join the group if the access token is shared by participants. Conversely, disabling this feature enables the host user to selectively control access, actively choosing which participants can join. A practical application of this embodiment can be demonstrated at a concert with 1,000 attendees. If the performer announces the access token over a microphone, everyone in the audience can immediately join the private social network group by entering the access token on their devices. Similarly, at a wedding gala where several events are happening concurrently, each party can protect the exclusivity of their gathering by sharing their access tokens only with their specific guests, preventing intermixing of different party networks. The selective sharing of an access token can enhance both security and privacy, maintaining distinct boundaries between concurrent events.

[0077] Within the social network group, participant users may share content, and interact with others, enjoying a secure and enhanced social networking experience. On the other hand, unauthenticated participants, or those who do not fulfil the authentication requirements, will be denied access the social network group (step 304b). Depending on the specific security or membership policies set by the host user, these individuals may have limited access or functionality or be completely prevented from discovering or accessing the social network group.

[0078] According to some embodiments, the system can provide an additional functionality that serves to enhance the visibility and accessibility of specific social network groups within the social platform. As illustrated in Fig. 7, a toggle switch “Featured” 604 is provided to enable this function. When a social network group is designated as "featured," via the toggle switch 604, it gains a prominent placement by being highlighted and pinned to the top of social network lists provided in the social networking application, ensuring it captures the attention of participants accessing the application. Alongside the above, a chat functionality may be provided to complement the interaction within the group by allowing participant users to engage in real-time 1text conversations. The chat functionality can be enabled by a toggle switch “Enable Chat” 605. The chat functionality can help fostering a more dynamic and interactive community environment, while encouraging active participation and communication among the participant users. In an embodiment, the system allows the host user the flexibility to control the chat functionality dynamically within their social network group. This capability is illustrated through an example of a teacher managing a classroom environment. To encourage inclusive participation and enable even the shyest students to ask questions without disrupting the ongoing class, the teacher activates the chat feature in her designated social network group. This action allows students to engage in digital communication parallel to the class activities. However, if the chat system begins to deviate from its intended educational purpose, with students using it to discuss off-topic matters, the teacher has the authority to deactivate the chat functionality. By turning off the chat functionality, the teacher can restore focus to the classroom. She communicates to the students that the chat will only be reinstated under the condition that they agree to use it responsibly. This example demonstrates the system’s flexibility, allowing the host user to toggle the chat feature on and off multiple times as needed, to maintain the quality and relevance of interactions within the social network group.

[0079] Within the social network group, participant users may share content, and interact with others, enjoying a secure and enhanced social networking experience. On the other hand, unauthenticated participants, or those who do not fulfil the authentication requirements, will be denied access the social network group (step 304b). Depending on the specific security or membership policies set by the host user, these individuals may have limited access or functionality or be completely prevented from discovering or accessing the social network group.

[0080] Figs. 10 to 14 illustrate a set of screenshots of a social networking application associated with further embodiments of present disclosure. Fig. 10 is an example of a screenshot of the social networking application showing an interface for navigating the social network application, according to an embodiment. As illustrated, this navigation screen can provide a user of the social network application to navigate to “Here. Now” 710 which would include a listing of social networks that are currently active within the location of the user. The navigation screen further provides a user of the social network application to navigate to “Discover” 720 which would include a listing of social networks that are currently active. It is to be understood, asdiscussed in further detail elsewhere herein, the social networks identified within the “Discover” page will not have a privacy designation which can be selected on the “Update Spime” page, for example as illustrated in Fig. 8. The navigation screen further provides a user of the social network application to navigate to “Here.Past” 715 which would include a listing of social networks that were operative at the current location of the user, but have subsequently expired in time. In addition, the navigation screen can further provide a user of the social network application to navigate to “Distant Spimes” 725 which would include social networks that associated with the user, namely social networks operated by the user or social networks that the user follows.

[0081] Fig. 11 is an example of a screenshot of the social networking application showing an interface for identifying social networks that are active at the current time and location of the user and thus are selectable for the user to be a participant device, according to an embodiment. Fig. 12 is an example of a screenshot of the social networking application showing an interface where all active social networks that are selectable for user, according to an embodiment. However, it is to be understood that the user could be either a viewing device or a participating device to these social networks depending on the location of the user as further discussed elsewhere herein. In this manner, the social networks listed in Fig. 12, would be operative at the current time, however the user device may or may not be present within the assigned area of operation of the social network. As such, if a device moves, it may transition from a participating device to a viewing device, and as such, the social network being viewed may transition between screens, namely may be removed from being presented on the “Here. Now” page.

[0082] In further detail, the social networking application allows the user to subscribe to (i.e., follow) certain social network groups. This feature allows the user to maintain connection with selected social network groups even when these groups transition from the "Here. Now" screen to the "Distant Spimes I Follow" screen. For instance in Fig. 11, the user, Al, is shown to be following the social network group named "Picture" 732 on the “Here. Now” screen, however, if the user moves beyond the operational range of "Picture," (leaves the radius of 200m associated with “Picture”), this social network group 732 will disappear from the “Here. Now” screen. Instead, the social network group 732 will transition to a “Distant Spimes I Follow” screen, and thus the user will transition from being a participating device to a viewing device. As such, Al will be able to continue observing the social data shared within the group "Picture" 732 by others who remaininside the operational range (i.e. radius) of “Picture”. However, as Al is no longer physically present within the defined operational range of this group 732, he will not be able to post new content in this social network group 732. It is to be understood, that as there may be a substantial plurality of social networks available for Al to follow, by providing a “Distant Spimes I Follow” it enhances the user Al’s ability to locate and select a desired social network.

[0083] Fig. 13 is an example of a screenshot of the social networking application showing an interface indicating active social networks that have been selected by the user, according to an embodiment. It is to be understood that the designation of a user device being a viewing device or participating device is based on the geographical location of the user device relative to the location associated with the social network in question.

[0084] Fig. 14 is an example of a screenshot of the social networking application showing an interface indicating expired social networks that were once active at the user’s current location, according to an embodiment. As these social networks are no longer active or operational, all user devices will solely be able to view the social network.

[0085] According to some embodiments, the system includes one or more viewing devices, wherein the viewing devices are capable of selecting a particular social network of a particular social network group, for viewing purposes only of the content presented in this particular social network. For example, a municipality can create one or more official social networks each being associated with a key location associated with the municipality. For example, these key locations may be popular tourist destinations. Locals and tourists across the city or around the world may request viewing access to one or more of these social networks in order to view real-time updates on weather, crowd levels, and local activities, which are all based on content generated on the spot by people who are actually there, namely uploaded to the social network by the participant devices. As is to be understood, only those physically present, namely within the defined geographical location and during the operational time associated with the social network can contribute content or assets to the social network. People around the world can also view these social networks which may help to promote tourism and boost the municipality’s visibility.

[0086] According to some embodiments, another use can be envisioned a social network that can provide sport stadium surveillance. For example, a social network can be defined for a stadiumwherein the social network group can include people (e.g. their participant device) which can upload information related to the actions occurring within the stadium. A viewing device, for example associated with a security service for the stadium, may view the content of the social network and the information and images uploaded by the participant devices can be evaluated or reviewed if security issues arise. As previously discussed elsewhere herein, as the content that may be uploaded to the social network is controlled by the social network application operating on a participating device, there is an inherent authenticity of the uploaded information based both on the location and time verification process performed on the uploaded information (e.g. images, video, comments, and that like).

[0087] According to embodiments, within the spatial and temporal based social network group, the host user and eligible participant users granted membership will have the ability to share, store, and access a wide variety of social data, ranging from images and videos to text messages and audio files. This exchange of information is facilitated by the use of cellular data networks and mobile internet. Once social data is shared within the social network group, the social data undergoes processing and is subsequently stored on the host server, serving as the central repository for all content produced. The centralization of storage enhances data management efficiency and ensures that all shared content is securely held in one location, streamlining the processes for access control and data retrieval. The host server may utilize suitable algorithms to sort, catalogue, and store the social data, as well as employ geolocation and geocaching techniques, ensuring it remains readily accessible to authorized individuals all around the world. The process of accessing shared data within the social network group is made seamless through the social networking application or website interface. Participant users can engage with the shared content in ways dictated by their specific access levels within the social network group. For instance, users actively participating in a social network group have the freedom to view and add to the shared data collection, whereas those in an archived social network group are limited to viewing existing content, without the ability to contribute further. Additionally, the social networking application may include a search functionality, providing users to efficiently sift through and locate previously shared social data.

[0088] The described system and method provide a comprehensive framework for the initiation and access management of a spatial and temporal based social network group, emphasizing a fine balance between easy accessibility and necessary measures for security, personalization, and adherence to temporal constraints. The described system and method outline a robust and innovative approach to creating and managing geographically and temporally defined social network groups. Through a combination of technological functionalities, including realtime location tracking, dynamic operational zones, and secure data management, the system offers a flexible and interactive platform for social engagement that promotes high level of immediacy and spontaneity for interactions. This framework not only facilitates seamless social interactions across various contexts and settings but also prioritizes user privacy and content integrity. Overall, the described system and method represent a significant advancement in social networking technology, offering users a unique and enriched experience of digital interaction based on space and time.
