KIT WITH PILLOW SLEEVES OF A SINGLE LENGTH AND DIFFERENT WIDTHS FOR USER-SELECTABLE COMPRESSION PRESSURE, FILL DENSITY, FIRMNESS, AND HEIGHTCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] This international application claims priority to and the benefit of the nonprovisional patent application titled “Kit With Pillow Sleeves Of A Single Length And Different Widths For User-Selectable Compression Pressure, Fill Density, Firmness, And Height”, application number 18 / 768,087, filed in the United States Patent and Trademark Office on July 10, 2024 which claims priority to and the benefit of the provisional patent application titled “A Stuffed Pillow and Rectangular Pillow Sleeves of Lengths L-l and Widths W-l, W-2, W-3, and W-4, for a User Selectable Compression Pressure, Fill Density, and Height, to Achieve Individual User Comfort”, application number 63 / 638,947, filed in the United States Patent and Trademark Office on April 26, 2024. The specification of the above-referenced patent application is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.BACKGROUND
[0002] Many different types of pillows are made and marketed, including pillows with inserts that adjust the height of the pillow, or pillows that use different materials to provide a user with a different firmness. Pillows are manufactured in several different ways. For example, pillows are formed of a top sheet of material and a bottom sheet of material that are joined around their outer periphery. Some pillows include a connection means between the top and bottom sheets of material, comprising, for example, stitching, buttons, zippers, etc. Pillow protectors may be provided to protect the outer fabric of the pillows inserted thereinto. Some pillow protectors include a premium, smooth zipper to prevent the user from feeling the zipper when the pillow protector is closed and in use.
[0003] Pillows are typically filled with materials of different types, for example, natural materials such as cotton, wool, duck or goose down and feathers, buckwheat, etc., and synthetic materials such as memory foam, siliconized polyester fibers, microfibers, etc. Cotton filling provides a firmer, flatter pillow that generally holds its shape well. Cotton is also cooler and breathes better than other materials. Wool provides a fuller feeling pillow and is durable, maintains warmth, and absorbs moisture away from the surface of the pillow. Down pillows are the softest and provide an airy feeling to the user.
[0004] Pillows are typically used for comfortably positioning and resting a user’s head or another body part during sleep or other resting activities. For a pillow to be comfortable throughout the sleeping or resting time, the pillow must support the user’s neck and head to facilitate a generally straight alignment of the user’s spine. Conventional pillows are typically of a rectangular shape and are manufactured in one of only a few sizes, for example, a standard size, a queen size, and a king size. In an example, a conventional pillow of a standard size has a width of about 20 inches and a length of about 26 inches; a conventional pillow of a queen size has a width of about 20 inches and a length of about 30 inches; and a conventional pillow of a king size has a width of about 20 inches and a length of about 36 inches. A conventional pillow is typically manufactured with a uniform fill material. If the user’s head is resting on a conventional pillow that is too thin or too low, the neck of the user lying sideways may bend in a downward direction. To maintain the side-lying user’s neck at a straight alignment, a thicker or stiffer pillow must be used to provide higher support when the user’s head is resting on the pillow. However, when the pillow is too thick or when the user stacks two pillows one on top of the other, the neck of the user bends in an upward direction, which may pinch various nerves in the neck and cause pain in the upper body of the user. The user may attempt to compensate for the thickness of the pillow, for example, by folding the pillow, or placing the user’s arm under the pillow, or stacking pillows to obtain a proper height. An improper height of the pillow causes discomfort and lack of rest or a good night’s sleep. Conventional pillows do not allow for height adjustment tailored to a specific user’s preference, which may change depending on the user’s sleeping position.
[0005] Furthermore, when the user’s head rests on a conventional pillow during sleeping or resting time, the fill material of the conventional pillow compresses substantially over time, or may migrate out from under the user’s head, causing the conventional pillow to change shape, gradually reduce its height, and flatten out, when the user is resting or at sleep. Consequently, the user has to re-fluff and re-adjust the pillow several times during rest or sleep. The user may also attempt to compensate for the compression of the pillow by stacking multiple pillows on top of the other which leads to further substantial compression of the pillow and discomfort or inconvenience to the user who requires support during sleep or rest.
[0006] One conventional method for providing a comfortable shape and feel of a pillow to the user is to introduce multiple inserts into a pillow case to alter the shape and the feel of the pillow. The inserts have specific sizes that allow the user to vary the weight or the height of the pillow to provide the user with a substantial amount of variability. However, this conventional method is not cost-effective and having to combine two or more inserts, each having a different fill density and height, according to the user’s preferences would be difficult and time consuming. As used herein, “fill density” refers to the weight of the fill material in the pillow divided by the volume of the space within the pillow. Higher the fill density in the pillow, higher is the firmness of the pillow. Lower the fill density in the pillow, softer is the feel when the user’s head rests on the pillow.
[0007] Prolonged use of conventional pillows and constant readjustment can change their shape and support, making the pillows uncomfortable to use. This discomfort can render the pillows unusable, leading users to buy new pillows frequently, sometimes every 2-3 months.. Therefore, there is an unmet need for pillow sleeves with different widths that compress and hold the filling material more tightly. Such pillow sleeves would maintain a user-selected firmness and height of the pillow, preventing the pillow from flattening out during use and reducing the need for frequent replacement of the pillow.
[0008] Hence, there is a long-felt need for a method and a pillow sleeve kit comprising a predetermined number of pillow sleeves of a single length selectable based on size of a pillow to be inserted thereinto, where the pillow sleeves are of different widths, for providing a user- selectable compression pressure, fill density, firmness, and height based on individual user comfort, while addressing the above-recited problems of the related art.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0025] The method and the apparatus disclosed herein address the above-recited needs for a method and for a pillow sleeve kit 100 comprising a predetermined number of pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 of a single length selectable based on a size of a pillow 201 to be inserted thereinto as illustrated in FIGS. 1-2, where the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 are of different widths for providing a user-selectable compression pressure, fill density, firmness, and height to the pillow 201 based on individual user comfort. The pillow 201 is stuffed with fill material of one or more types, for example, natural materials such as cotton, wool, latex, duck or goose down andfeathers, buckwheat, kapok fibers, etc., and synthetic materials such as memory foam, siliconized polyester fibers, polyester fibcrfill, microfibers, microbcads, etc. The pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 are made from different materials, for example, cotton, polyester, silk, bamboo-derived fabrics, linen, microfibers, etc., or any combination thereof.
[0026] FIG. 1 illustrates an embodiment of a pillow sleeve kit 100 comprising a predetermined number of pillow sleeves, for example, four pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104, of a single length and of different widths. In an embodiment, each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 is of a rectangular shape. The pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 are of a single length selectable based on a size of a pillow 201 to be inserted thereinto as illustrated in FIG. 2. The pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 are of different widths configured to provide a user- selectable compression pressure, fill density, firmness, and height to the pillow 201 based on individual user comfort. As used herein, “compression pressure” refers to a force exerted on the surface of a pillow 201 when the pillow 201 is compressed, which impacts firmness or softness of the pillow 201 and support provided by the pillow 201. Fill density is a measure of the compactness of the fill material within the pillow 201. When a user rests his or her head on a pillow 201, the user’s head and neck apply pressure to the pillow 201, which compresses the fill material of the pillow 201. The compression pressure is the resistance the pillow 201 provides against pressure applied by the user’s head and neck during rest or sleep thereon, influencing overall feel and ability of the pillow 201 to maintain a proper alignment of the user’s spine during sleep.
[0027] The size of the pillow 201 is one of a standard size, a queen size, and a king size. Accordingly, the length of each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 is one of a standard size length, a queen size length, and a king size length. In an example, the standard size length is about 25 inches; the queen size length is about 29 inches; and the king size length is about 35 inches. In an embodiment, the width of each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 is varied to provide the user-selectable compression pressure, fill density, firmness, and height. The compression pressure, the fill density, thefirmness, and the height of the pillow 201 are varied by inserting the pillow 201 into each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 of a single length and different widths. In an embodiment as illustrated in FIG. 1, a zipper 105 is provided on one of the sides of each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104. In an embodiment, each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 are configured as tight-fitting pillow cover or a compression pillow encasement with a zipper closure disposed at one side. A different compression pressure, a different fill density, a different firmness, and a different height are provided by assembling the pillow 201 in each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 of the single length and the different widths as disclosed in the descriptions of FIGS. 3A-3D and FIGS. 4A-4D. As used herein, “assembling the pillow” refers to inserting the pillow 201 into a pillow sleeve 101 / 102 / 103 / 104 and closing and fastening the pillow 201 therewithin using the zipper 105.
[0028] Most users typically use rectangular pillows 201 of the same size, for example, either a standard size or a queen size or a king size, on their beds. In an embodiment, the pillow sleeve kit 100 provides four rectangular pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 with the same length, for example, either a standard size length, a queen size length, or a king size length and with different widths as illustrated in FIG. 1, FIGS. 3A-3D, and FIGS. 4A-4D. Although the detailed description refers to a pillow sleeve kit 100 with four pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104, the pillow sleeve kit 100 disclosed herein is not limited to including four pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104, but extends to include any number of pillow sleeves of the same single length and multiple different widths, based on user preferences.
[0029] The pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 in the pillow sleeve kit 100 are configured with a single length to fit pillows 201 that the user already has. In an example, if the user has standard sized-pillows, each of the same length of about 26 inches, the user can order the pillow sleeve kit 100 comprising a set of four pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 having the same standard size length of about 25 inches, but with four different widths. In another example, if the user has queen sized-pillows, each of the same length of about 30 inches, the user can order the pillow sleeve kit 100 comprising a set of fourpillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 having the same queen size length of about 29 inches, but with four different widths. In another example, if the user has king sized- pillows, each of the same length of about 36 inches, the user can order the pillow sleeve kit 100 comprising a set of four pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 having the same king size length of about 35 inches, but with four different widths. In an embodiment, the single length of each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 is configured to be less than the length of the pillow 201, to allow each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 to fully and tightly accommodate the pillow 201 therewithin, with a slight compression on a longitudinal axis. For example, for a standard size pillow of length 26 inches, the single length of each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 is about 25 inches; for a queen size pillow of length 30 inches, the single length of each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 is about 29 inches; and for a king size pillow of length 36 inches, the single length of each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 is about 35 inches, which provides compression on the longitudinal axis of the pillow 201. The different widths of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 provide the fill material of the pillow 201 inserted thereinto with different amounts of compression on the lateral axis and render different heights to the inserted pillow 201.
[0030] In an example, for a pillow 201 of a standard size (S) having a width of about 20 inches and a length of about 26 inches, the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 in the pillow sleeve kit 100 are provided with a single length of about 25 inches and four different widths of about 16 inches, 17 inches, 18 inches, and 19 inches, which provide four different compression pressures SP1, SP2, SP3, and SP4, respectively, and render four different heights SHI, SH2, SH3, and SH4 for the standard size pillow.
[0031] In another example, for a pillow 201 of a queen size (Q) having a width of about 20 inches and a length of about 30 inches, the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 in the pillow sleeve kit 100 are provided with a single length of about 29 inches and four different widths of about 16 inches, 17 inches, 18 inches, and 19 inches, which provide four different compression pressures QP1, QP2, QP3, and QP4, and render four different heights QH1, QH2, QH3, and QH4 for the queen size pillow.
[0032] In another example, for a pillow 201 of a king size (K) having a width of about 20 inches and a length of about 36 inches, the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 in the pillow sleeve kit 100 are provided with a single length of about 35 inches and four different widths of about 16 inches, 17 inches, 18 inches, and 19 inches, which provide four different compression pressures KPI, KP2, KP3, and KP4, and render four different heights KH1, KH2, KH3, and KH4 for the king size pillow.
[0033] Therefore, in the above examples, the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 are provided in the pillow sleeve kit 100 as a pack of four pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 with different widths. That is, a standard four pack-pillow sleeve kit comprises four standard size pillow sleeves in four widths; a queen four pack -pillow sleeve kit comprises four queen size pillow sleeves in four widths; and a king four pack-pillow sleeve kit comprises four king size pillow sleeves in four widths. The pillow sleeve kit 100 allows the user to customize his or her standard size or queen size or king size pillow based on the user’s preference by merely changing the pillow sleeve. Therefore, the user may select and adjust the compression and height of the pillow 201 by selecting pillow sleeves of a slightly reduced single length and different widths.
[0034] When the user inserts the pillow 201 into a pillow sleeve with a narrow width, for example, the pillow sleeve 103 or 104, as illustrated in FIG. 1, the pillow sleeve compresses the fill material of the pillow 201 more tightly against the sides of the pillow 201. The compression of the fill material increases the density of the fill material in those areas, making the pillow 201 feel firmer. Moreover, the pillow sleeve with a narrow width also restricts the natural expansion and migration of the fill material contained in the pillow 201. When the fill material is compressed within a narrower space rendered by a narrower pillow sleeve, the fill material will be compressed within a smaller pillow volume, resulting in a firmer feel. Furthermore, in an embodiment, the pillow sleeve with a narrower width maintains a substantially more uniform fill material density throughout the pillow 201. With less space for the fill material to expand into or migrate from under the user’s head and neck, the fill material remains uniformly distributed in the narrowerconfined space of the narrower pillow sleeve, providing a higher fill density and firmer support and density across the entire surface of the pillow 201. The pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 of different widths in the pillow sleeve kit 100, therefore, impact the fill density of the pillow 201 by either increasing compression and density or by restricting expansion and migration, depending on the type of fill material and how the fill material responds to being confined in a variable space provided by the pillow sleeves101, 102, 103, and 104 of different widths. Each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 compresses the fill material in the pillow 201, allowing the firmness of the pillow 201 to be adjustable by using the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 of different widths to obtain a customized fit. The firmness of the pillow 201 within is adjusted from using the pillow sleeve 101 which provides an assembled pillow 301 with the least relative firmness as illustrated in FIG. 3A, to using the pillow sleeve 104 which provides an assembled pillow 304 with the most relative firmness as illustrated in FIG. 3D. The pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 of different widths in the pillow sleeve kit 100, therefore, allows the user to select and adjust compression pressure, fill density, firmness, and height of the pillow 201 based on individual user comfort. The pillow sleeve kit 100 with a predetermined number of pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 of the same length and of different widths allows the user to instantly change the amount of filling compression based on user preferences. If the user is unsatisfied with the compression pressure, fill density, firmness, and height provided to the pillow 201 by the width of one pillow sleeve, for example, a width of about 19 inches of the pillow sleeve 101, the user may select another pillow sleeve, for example, 102, 103, or 104 with a different width of about 18 inches, or 17 inches, or 16 inches, respectively, to obtain the desired firmness, compression pressure, fill density, and pillow height. The pillow sleeve kit 100 allows the user to adjust the firmness of their pillow 201 by selecting any of the pillow sleeves 101,102, 103, and 104 with the decreasing widths. If one pillow sleeve is too flat or too high, the user may select another pillow sleeve of a different width to obtain more or less compression and pillow height until the user finds the right pillow sleeve to suit for their desired firmness.
[0035] FIG. 2 illustrates a top perspective view of a rectangular pillow sleeve 101 / 102 / 103 / 104, showing insertion of a pillow 201 into an interior cavity 106 of the rectangular pillow sleeve 101 / 102 / 103 / 104. In an embodiment, the zipper 105 is disposed on one side of the pillow sleeve 101 / 102 / 103 / 104. The zipper 105 in an open condition is configured to allow insertion of the pillow 201 into the interior cavity 106 of the rectangular pillow sleeve 101 / 102 / 103 / 104 of the same single length and the different widths to obtain an assembled pillow 301 / 302 / 303 / 304 in a closed condition with a user- selected compression pressure, fill density, firmness, and height as illustrated in FIGS. 3A-3D. As the space within the pillow 201 is decreased by the use of narrower width pillow sleeves, for the same amount of the fill material within the pillow 201, the fill density of the pillow 201 will increase, which in turn, will increase the firmness of the assembled pillow. The zipper 105 extends till the comer of one side of the pillow sleeve 101 / 102 / 103 / 104 to allow convenient insertion of a pillow 201 with an increased width into the interior cavity 106 of the rectangular- pillow sleeve 101 / 102 / 103 / 104. A user opens the zipper 105 to expose the interior cavity 106 of the rectangular pillow sleeve 101 / 102 / 103 / 104 and inserts the pillow 201 into the interior cavity 106 of the rectangular pillow sleeve 101 / 102 / 103 / 104 in the direction of the arrow illustrated in FIG. 2. That is, the user inserts the pillow 201 through one side of any of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 and zips up the pillow sleeve 101, 102, 103, or 104 to encase the pillow 201 within any of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104.
[0036] FIGS. 3A-3D illustrate top perspective views of four assembled pillows 301, 302, 303, and 304 comprising a pillow 201 of a single size assembled in each of four rectangular pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 having the same length and four different widths, providing user-selectable compression pressures, fill densities, firmness, and heights. A user customizes the same pillow 201 of the single size, for example, either a standard size, or a queen size, or a king size, in four different ways by opening the zippers 105 of the four rectangular pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 having four different widths selectable from XW-1, XW-2, XW-3, and XW-4 as illustrated in FIGS. 3A-3D, respectively; inserting the same pillow 201 into each of the interior cavities 106 of the rectangular pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 illustrated in FIG. 2; and closingthe zippers 105 to obtain the assembled pillows 301, 302, 303, and 304. XW- 1 , XW-2, XW-3, and XW-4 denote four different widths of type X, where X is one of a standard size, a queen size, and a king size. Although the lengths of the four rectangular pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 are the same, the four different widths XW-1, XW-2, XW-3, and XW-4 of the rectangular pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104, respectively, provide different compression pressures, different fill densities, and different heights XH1, XH2, XH3, and XH4, respectively. XH1, XH2, XH3, and XH4 are the heights of the assembled pillows 301, 302, 303, and 304 of size X, respectively. In an embodiment, the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 are made of an elastic material to provide the user-selected compression pressure to the assembled pillows 301, 302, 303, and 304, respectively. In another embodiment, the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 are made of an inelastic material to provide the user-selected compression pressure to the assembled pillows 301, 302, 303, and 304.
[0037] The length (XL-1) of each of the pillow sleeves 101, 102, 103, and 104 is one of a standard size length (SL-1), a queen size length (QL-1), and a king size length (KL-1). [0038] The compression pressure of the assembled pillow 301 / 302 / 303 / 304 is inversely proportional to the volume of the assembled pillow 301 / 302 / 303 / 304. The fill density is also inversely proportional to the volume of the assembled pillow 301 / 302 / 303 / 304. When the width of the pillow 201 is limited, the internal volume decreases, making the fill density of the pillow 201 increase. This higher fill density pushes outward and causes the pillow 201 to expand in the direction of least resistance, which is the upward direction. The height of the pillow 201 will keep increasing until the outward pressure from the fill density is balanced by the resistance in height. Therefore, the narrower the pillow sleeve, the higher the fill density and the greater the height. When the fill material of the pillow 201 filling is compressed, by using a smaller pillow sleeve for the same amount of fill material, the volume decreases, causing the fill density to increase proportionally. The length, width, fill density, height, and mass of the assembled pillow 301 / 302 / 303 / 304 are related by a predefined formula as follows:(XL-1) x (XW-1) x (XD1) x (XH1) = (XL-1) x (XW-2) x (XD2) x (XH2) = (XL-1) x (XW-3) x (XD3) x (XH3) = (XL-1) x (XW-4) x (XD4) x (XH4) = ... = (XL-1) x (XW- N) x (XDN) x (XHN) = XM; wherein,XL and XW are the length and the width of the pillow 201 of size X that is inserted into each of the pillow sleeves of “N” different widths of type X, respectively;XD1, XD2, XD3, XD4, ..., XDN are till densities of the pillow 201 of size X after assembling the pillow 201 of size X in each of the pillow sleeves of length (XL-1) and widths (XW-1), (XW-2), (XW-3), (XW-4), ..., (XW-N), respectively;XH1, XH2, XH3, XH4, ..., XHN are heights of the pillow 201 of size X after assembling the pillow 201 of size X in each of the pillow sleeves of length (XL-1) and widths (XW-1), (XW-2), (XW-3), (XW-4), ..., (XW-N), respectively;XM is mass of the pillow 201 of size X; andX is one of a standard size (S), a queen size (Q), and a king size (K) of the pillow 201.
