Description

Triggering Event and Measurement Resource Determination in Wireless CommunicationBackground

[0001] In legacy beam management procedures, the network may configure / activate frequent periodic or semi-persistent beam reporting (e.g., N best beams and corresponding Layer 1 Reference Signal Received Power (L1-RSRP) ) or triggers frequent aperiodic beam reporting to timely acquire the best / preferred beam for data / control transmissions. However, this results in large uplink (UL) reporting overhead and control signaling overhead. At the same time, if less frequent beam reporting is configured, the network may not always acquire the ‘best / preferred’ beam (s) as the beam reporting by the user equipment (UE) may be outdated, thus leading to performance degradation.

[0002] Given that the UE has better and more-timely knowledge of beam quality changes, a UE-initiated beam reporting procedure may lead to more timely beam reports yet with reduced reporting overhead. However, there are issues related to UE-initiated beam reporting including, for example, how to determine the measurement resources for UE-initiated beam reporting and how to define events to timely update the activated Transmission Configuration Indicator (TCI) -state list to ensure beam management reliability.Summary

[0003] Some example embodiments are related to an apparatus having processing circuitry configured to process first measurements of reference signals associated with a current  beam, process second measurements of reference signals associated with one or more candidate beams, determine, based on the first and second measurements, a quality of at least one of the one or more candidate beams is a threshold amount higher than a quality of the current beam and generate, for reporting to the network, a beam report indicating the quality of the at least one of the one or more candidate beams the threshold amount higher than the quality of the current beam.

[0004] Other example embodiments are related to an apparatus having processing circuitry configured to process first measurements of reference signals associated with activated Transmission Configuration Indicator states (TCI-states) , process second measurements of reference signals associated with one or more candidate beams, determine, based on the first and second measurements, a quality of at least one of the one or more candidate beams is a threshold amount higher than a quality of a lowest quality activated TCI-state and generate, for reporting to the network, a beam report indicating the quality of at least one of the one or more candidate beams is the threshold amount higher than the quality of the lowest quality activated TCI-state.Brief Description of the Drawings

[0015] The example embodiments may be further understood with reference to the following description and the related appended drawings, wherein like elements are provided with the same reference numerals. The example embodiments relate to UE initiated beam reporting (UEIBR) .

[0016] The example embodiments are described with regard to a user equipment (UE) . However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.

[0017] The example embodiments are also described with regard to a 5G New Radio (NR) network. However, reference to a 5G NR network is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any network that may establish a connection to a UE and exchange information and data with the UE (e.g., 5G-Advanced networks, 6G networks, etc. ) .

[0018] Some example embodiments are related to operations and configurations for the UE to determine measurement resources for  UEIBR measurements for both a current beam and candidate beams. Other example embodiments are related to configuring an event to update an activated Transmission Configuration Indicator (TCI) -state list.

[0019] Fig. 1 shows an example network arrangement 100 according to various example embodiments. The example network arrangement 100 includes a UE 110. The UE 110 may be any type of electronic component that is configured to communicate via a network, e.g., mobile phones, tablet computers, desktop computers, smartphones, phablets, embedded devices, wearables, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, etc. An actual network arrangement may include any number of UEs being used by any number of users. Thus, the example of a single UE 110 is merely provided for illustrative purposes.

[0020] The UE 110 may be configured to communicate with one or more networks. In the example of the network arrangement 100, the network with which the UE 110 may wirelessly communicate is a 5G NR radio access network (RAN) 120. However, the UE 110 may also communicate with other types of networks (e.g., 5G cloud RAN, a next generation RAN (NG-RAN) , a long term evolution RAN, a legacy cellular network, a WLAN, etc. ) and the UE 110 may also communicate with networks over a wired connection. With regard to the example embodiments, the UE 110 may establish a connection with the 5G NR RAN 120. Therefore, the UE 110 may have a 5G NR chipset to communicate with the NR RAN 120.

[0021] The 5G NR RAN 120 may be a portion of a public land mobile network (PLMN) that may be deployed by a network carrier  (e.g., Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. ) . The 5G NR RAN 120 may include, for example, cells or base stations (Node Bs, eNodeBs, HeNBs, eNBS, gNBs, gNodeBs, macrocells, microcells, small cells, femtocells, etc. ) that are configured to send and receive traffic from UEs that are equipped with the appropriate cellular chip set. The gNB 120A may include one or more communication interfaces to exchange data and / or information with the UE 110, the corresponding 5G NR RAN 120, the cellular core network 130, the internet 140, etc.

[0022] The UE 110 may connect to the 5G NR-RAN 120 via the gNB 120A. Any association procedure may be performed for the UE 110 to connect to the 5G NR-RAN 120. For example, as discussed above, the 5G NR-RAN 120 may be associated with a particular cellular provider where the UE 110 and / or the user thereof has a contract and credential information (e.g., stored on a SIM card) . Upon detecting the presence of the 5G NR-RAN 120, the UE 110 may transmit the corresponding credential information to associate with the 5G NR-RAN 120. More specifically, the UE 110 may associate with a specific cell (e.g., the gNB 120A) . However, as mentioned above, reference to the 5G NR-RAN 120 is merely for illustrative purposes and any appropriate type of RAN may be used.

[0023] In addition to the 5G NR RAN 120, the network arrangement 100 also includes a cellular core network 130, the Internet 140, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) 150, and a network services backbone 160. The cellular core network 130 may be considered to be the interconnected set of components that manages the operation and traffic of the cellular network.  The cellular core network 130 also manages the traffic that flows between the cellular network and the Internet 140.

[0024] The IMS 150 may be generally described as an architecture for delivering multimedia services to the UE 110 using the IP protocol. The IMS 150 may communicate with the cellular core network 130 and the Internet 140 to provide the multimedia services to the UE 110. The network services backbone 160 is in communication either directly or indirectly with the Internet 140 and the cellular core network 130. The network services backbone 160 may be generally described as a set of components (e.g., servers, network storage arrangements, etc. ) that implement a suite of services that may be used to extend the functionalities of the UE 110 in communication with the various networks.

[0025] Fig. 2 shows an example UE 110 according to various example embodiments. The UE 110 will be described with regard to the network arrangement 100 of Fig. 1. The UE 110 may include a processor 205, a memory arrangement 210, a display device 215, an input / output (I / O) device 220, a transceiver 225 and other components 230. The other components 230 may include, for example, an audio input device, an audio output device, a power supply, a data acquisition device, ports to electrically connect the UE 110 to other electronic devices, etc.

[0026] The processor 205 may be configured to execute a plurality of engines of the UE 110. For example, the engines may include a UEIBR engine 235. The UEIBR engine 235 may perform various operations related to beam reporting initiated by the UE 110. Specifically, the UEIBR engine 235 may perform operations  such as, but not limited to, determining the measurement resources for a current beam, determining the measurement resources for candidate beams, performing / processing measurements for the current beam, performing / processing measurements for the candidate beams, determining an event that triggers a beam report and sending the beam report to the network. These and other operations are described in greater detail below.

[0027] The above referenced engine 235 being an application (e.g., a program) executed by the processor 205 is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The functionality associated with the engine 235 may also be represented as a separate incorporated component of the UE 110 or may be a modular component coupled to the UE 110, e.g., an integrated circuit with or without firmware. For example, the integrated circuit may include input circuitry to receive signals and processing circuitry to process the signals and other information. The engine may also be embodied as one application or separate applications. In addition, in some UEs, the functionality described for the processor 205 is split among two or more processors such as a baseband processor and an applications processor. The example embodiments may be implemented in any of these or other configurations of a UE.

[0028] The memory arrangement 210 may be a hardware component configured to store data related to operations performed by the UE 110. The display device 215 may be a hardware component configured to show data to a user while the I / O device 220 may be a hardware component that enables the user to enter inputs. The display device 215 and the I / O device 220 may be  separate components or integrated together such as a touchscreen.

[0030] Fig. 3 shows an example base station 300 according to various example embodiments. The base station 300 may represent the gNB 120A or any other type of access node through which the UE 110 may establish a connection and manage network operations.

[0031] The base station 300 may include a processor 305, a memory arrangement 310, an input / output (I / O) device 315, a transceiver 320, and other components 325. The other components 325 may include, for example, an audio input device, an audio output device, a battery, a data acquisition device, ports to electrically connect the base station 300 to other electronic  devices and / or power sources, TxRUs, transceiver chains, antenna elements, antenna panels, etc.

[0032] The processor 305 may be configured to execute a plurality of engines for the base station 300. For example, the engines may include a UEIBR configuration engine 330. The UEIBR configuration engine 330 may perform various operations related to configuring a UE to initiate beam reporting to the network. To provide some general examples, the UEIBR configuration engine 330 may perform operations such as, but not limited to, configuring the UE with one or more events that trigger beam reporting, configuring measurement resources for the events and configuring information allowing the UE to determine the measurement resources for the events. These and other operations are described in greater detail below.

[0033] The above noted engine 330 being an application (e.g., a program) executed by the processor 305 is only an example. The functionality associated with the engine 330 may also be represented as a separate incorporated component of the base station 300 or may be a modular component coupled to the base station 300, e.g., an integrated circuit with or without firmware. For example, the integrated circuit may include input circuitry to receive signals and processing circuitry to process the signals and other information. In addition, in some base stations, the functionality described for the processor 305 is split among a plurality of processors (e.g., a baseband processor, an applications processor, etc. ) . The example embodiments may be implemented in any of these or other configurations of a base station.

[0034] The memory arrangement 310 may be a hardware component configured to store data related to operations performed by the base station 300. The I / O device 315 may be a hardware component or ports that enable a user to interact with the base station 300.

[0035] The transceiver 320 may be a hardware component configured to exchange data with the UE 110 and any other UEs in the network arrangement 100. The transceiver 320 may operate on a variety of different frequencies or channels (e.g., set of consecutive frequencies) . Therefore, the transceiver 320 may include one or more components to enable the data exchange with the various networks and UEs. The transceiver 320 includes circuitry configured to transmit and / or receive signals (e.g., control signals, data signals) . Such signals may be encoded with information implementing any one of the methods described herein. The processor 305 may be operably coupled to the transceiver 320 and configured to receive from and / or transmit signals to the transceiver 320. The processor 305 may be configured to encode and / or decode signals (e.g., signaling from a UE) for implementing any one of the methods described herein.

[0036] Some example embodiments are related to events that may trigger a UE-Initiated Beam Report (UEIBR) procedure. An example event may be that the quality of at least one new beam (e.g., L1-RSRP) of the candidate beams becomes an offset value better than the current beam, e.g., the candidate beam’s RSRP value is greater than a current beam RSRP value by a threshold amount. The amount of this offset or threshold may be set at any appropriate value. This event may be referred to as ‘Event 2. ’ However, this nomenclature is only used for ease of referring to  the event and the event may be referred to by different names. Furthermore, while the example embodiments are described with reference to Event 2, the example embodiments may be applied to different events that may trigger UEIBR.

[0037] The example embodiments may consider the measurement resources to determine this event. There may be two aspects of the measurement resources. A first aspect is the measurement resources for the current beam, e.g., the activated TCI states. A second aspect is the measurement resources for the candidate beams. Each of these aspects will be discussed in greater detail below.

[0038] Initially, the first aspect of the measurement resources for the current beam, e.g., the activated TCI states, is described. As described above, the measurements may be L1-RSRP measurements. However, the example embodiments are not limited to L1-RSRP measurements and other signal quality measurements may be used, e.g., Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ) , Signal to interference Noise Ratio (SINR) , etc.

[0039] In one option, the measurement resource for UEIBR measurement may be the quasi-co-located (QCL) reference signal (RS) resource of the indicated TCI-state. For example, each indicated TCI state includes information for one or more QCL Rs resources as part of the Radio Resource Control (RRC) configuration for the indicated TCI state. Thus, the UE may us the one or more QCL RS for the indicated TCI state (current beam) as the measurement resources for UEIBR measurement.

[0040] To provide one example, in some current configurations, there are two QCL RS per indicated TCI state, a first RS with a ‘qcl-type’ set as ‘typeA’ and a second RS with a ‘qcl-type’ set as ‘typeD’ . In this example, the UE may use the RS with ‘qcl-type’ set as ‘typeD’ for UEIBR measurement. This is only an example and the RS used for UEIBR measurement of the one or more QCL RSs associated with the indicated TCI state may be determined in other manners.

[0041] In another option, the measurement resource for UEIBR measurement for the current beam may be two resources. A first measurement resource may be QCL Channel State Information RS (CSI-RS) or Tracking Reference Signal (TRS) resource of the indicated TCI-state. A second measurement resource may be the Synchronization Signal Block (SSB) resource that is QCLed with QCL RS resource of the indicated TCI-state. This SSB of the indicated TCI-state may be referred to as a ‘root’S SB and may be used the QCL reference signal of the indicated TCI-state or an activated TCI-state.

[0042] In this option, the one of the two resources that is used by the UE for the UEIBR measurement may be explicitly indicated to the UE. For example, an information element (IE) may be included in the RRC configuration of Event 2 or a new Medium Access Control Control Element (MAC-CE) may be used to indicate which of the two resources are used for L1-RSRP UEIBR measurement. There are scenarios where CSI-RS and / or TRS are transmitted on candidate beams and other scenarios where CSI-RS and / or TRS are not transmitted on candidate beams. By explicitly indicating the candidate beam measurement resource to be used, the UE may avoid a mismatch when comparing RSRP values of the  current beam and candidate beams, e.g., L1 RSRP value of CSI-RS of current beam may not be compared to L1 RSRP value of SSB for candidate beam.

[0043] Fig. 4 shows an example RRC IE 400 that includes an explicit indication 410 of the measurement resource to be used for UEIBR measurement according to various example embodiments. As shown in Fig. 4, the IE 400 is the RRC configuration for Event 2. This configuration includes the IE 410 ‘resourceType’ that may include an explicit indication of the CSI-RS (e.g., the first measurement resource described above) or the SSB (e.g., second measurement resource described above) .

[0044] In another example, the one of the two resources that is used by the UE for the UEIBR measurement may be implicitly indicated to the UE. For example, the second measurement resource (e.g., SSB) may be used when SSB resources are configured as measurement resource (s) of candidate beams. As described above, there are scenarios where CSI-RS and / or TRS are transmitted on candidate beams and other scenarios where CSI-RS and / or TRS are not transmitted on candidate beams. If the current scenario includes CSI-RS and / or TRS not being transmitted on candidate beams, then the UE may perform UEIBR measurements on SSBs transmitted by the current beam. This allows the UE to compare the L1 RSRP value of SSBs of the current beam to the L1 RSRP values of SSBs on the candidate beams.

[0045] Otherwise, in the scenario where the CSI-RS and / or TRS are transmitted by the candidate beams, then the UE may perform UEIBR measurements on CSI-RS and / or TRS transmitted by the  current beam. This allows the UE to compare the L1 RSRP value of CSI-RS and / or TRS of the current beam to the L1 RSRP values of CSI-RS and / or TRS on the candidate beams. In this example, the UE may avoid a mismatch when comparing RSRP values of the current beam and candidate beams without any explicit signaling as described in the above example, e.g., L1 RSRP value of CSI-RS of current beam may not be compared to L1 RSRP value of SSB for candidate beam.

[0046] The following described the second aspect of the measurement resources for the candidate beams. Again, the measurements may be L1-RSRP measurements. However, the example embodiments are not limited to L1-RSRP measurements and other signal quality measurements may be used, e.g., RSRQ, SINRs, etc.

[0047] In a first example, the measurement resources for candidate beams for UEIBR measurements may be implicitly derived from the QCL RS (s) of the activated TCI-states. As described above, Event 2 indicates that at least one of the candidate beams is an offset better (in terms of L1 RSRP values) than a current beam. The network may use this information to trigger a TCI-state update to one of activated TCI-states, e.g., the current beam may be replaced with the candidate beam.

[0048] In a first option, the ‘resourceType’ IE 410 of Fig. 4 in the RRC configuration IE 400 of Event 2 or a new MAC-CE may be applied to both the current beam and the candidate beams. For example, if the ‘resourceType’ IE 410 explicitly indicates SSBs, then the UE will measure the SSBs for both the current beam and the candidate beams for UEIBR measurements. Similarly, if the ‘resourceType’ IE 410 explicitly indicates CSI-RS, then the UE  will measure the CSI-RS for both the current beam and the candidate beams for UEIBR measurements.

[0049] In a second option, the same type of measurement resource as current beam may be used. The following will provide an example of how the UE may derive the identity of the same type of measurement resource for the current beam and candidate beams.

[0050] Fig. 5 shows an example of a TCI-State List 500 according to various example embodiments. In this example, the TCI-State List 500 shows there are 6 configured TCI states, e.g., TCI states 2-7. The TCI state 2 is the indicated TCI state, e.g., the current beam. The TCI states 3 and 4 are the activated candidate beams and the TCI states 5-7 are not currently activated. In this example, each TCI state includes two QCL RS indicated as ‘Qcl-type1’ and ‘Qcl-type2’ . For example, the current beam (e.g., TCI state 2) has a QCL RS of TRS#3 for ‘Qcl-type1’ and TRS#3 for ‘Qcl-type2’ .

[0051] In this example, it may also be considered that the ‘resourceType’ is set as ‘SSB’ , e.g., the UE is to use SSBs for the UEIBR measurements for both the current beam and the candidate beams. Referring to the TCI-State List 500, it can be seen that the QCL RS of TRS#3 for the current beam (e.g., TCI state 2) corresponds to the TCI state 5 for TRS#3. The QCLed SSB corresponding to the TCI state 5 for TRS#3 is SSB#1. Thus, the UE may use the SSB#1 as the measurement resource for the UEIBR measurements for the current beam.

[0052] Referring to the TCI-State List 500, it can be seen that the QCL RS of CSI-RS#6 for the candidate beam having TCI state 3 corresponds to the TCI state 6 for CSI-RS#6. The QCLed SSB corresponding to the TCI state 6 for CSI-RS#6 is SSB#2. Thus, the UE may use the SSB#2 as the measurement resource for the UEIBR measurements for the candidate beam having TCI state 3.

[0053] Similarly, referring to the TCI-State List 500, it can be seen that the QCL RS of CSI-RS#8 for the candidate beam having TCI state 4 corresponds to the TCI state 7 for CSI-RS#8. The QCLed SSB corresponding to the TCI state 7 for CSI-RS#8 is SSB#10. Thus, the UE may use the SSB#10 as the measurement resource for the UEIBR measurements for the candidate beam having TCI state 4.

[0054] The above was just one example of how the identity of the same type of measurement resource for the current beam and candidate beams may be derived. Other identities of measurement resources for UEIBR measurements may be derived using the principles described in the above example when TCI states have different QCLed RSs.

[0055] In a second example, the measurement resources for candidate beams for UEIBR measurements may be explicitly configured by RRC signaling. A difference between the first example and the second example is that as described above for the first example, the evaluation is limited to the activated TCI states. The second example may be used for all configured TCI states. Thus, the second example may be used to update the ‘activated TCI-states’ list.

[0056] In a first option of the second example, the UE may be explicitly configured with the measurement resources for candidate beams for UEIBR measurements by RRC signaling related to the event, e.g., Event 2. Fig. 6 shows an example RRC IE 600 that includes an explicit indication of the measurement resources to be used for candidate beam UEIBR measurement according to various example embodiments. Similar to Fig. 4, the IE 600 is an example configuration for the Event 2. The IE 600 includes an IE ‘resourceForCandidateBeam’ 610 that may be used to configure a set of CSI-RS resources or SSB resources for candidate beam UEIBR measurements.

[0057] This first option may be further enhanced based on configuration updates. Fig. 7 shows an example network arrangement 700 illustrating a UE 710 moving with respect to a base station 720 serving the current beam (s) and candidate beam (s) according to various example embodiments. At time (t0) , the UE 710 may be configured with a RS resource set (S0) having RS#1, RS#2, RS#3 and RS#4. As the UE 710 moves, at time (t1) , the UE 710 may be updated with a new RS resource set (S1) . For example, the RS resource set (S1) may have RS resources RS#3, RS#4, RS#5 and RS#6. The enhancement to the first option may be the manner of updating the UE 710.

[0058] In some examples, the update may be via additional RRC signaling, e.g., the RRC IE 600 including the IE ‘resourceForCandidateBeam’ 610 may be sent to the UE 710 as part of an RRC Reconfiguration and this may update the measurement resources for candidate beams for UEIBR measurements. However, RRC signaling may have too much latency in high mobility  scenarios. Thus, in other examples, a new MAC-CE may be used to fast update the candidate beam measurement resources when UE 710 is moving. The MAC-CE signaling may have less latency than RRC signaling and have a reliability that is sufficient to update the UE 710 in a mobility state.

[0059] Fig. 8 shows an example MAC-CE 800 for updating measurement resources for candidate beams for UEIBR measurements according to various example embodiments. The MAC-CE 800 may be identified by a dedicated extended Logical Channel Identification (eLCID) and may have a variable size. The MAC-CE 800 may have an Event ID field 810 that indicates the event ID to which the MAC-CE 800 is applied. For example, the Event ID field 810 may identify the Event 2. However, any event that may trigger UEIBR may be identified in the Event ID field 810. The MAC-CE 800 may also include a cell index field 820 that indicates the cell index to which the MAC-CE 800 is applied, e.g., the cell index for the base station 720.

[0060] The MAC-CE 800 may further includes an indication of how many RSs are updated. This is shown in Fig. 8 as fields F0-F3, where Fi indicates whether the RS identified by the index ‘i’ in the previous RS resource set is updated by the MAC-CE 800. These fields Fi may be a bitmap indicating the RSs that are to be updated, where, for example, a value of ‘1’ indicates the corresponding RS is to be updated and a value of ‘0’ indicates the corresponding RS is not to be updated. The number of Fi bits is determined based on the most recent RS resource set before receiving the MAC-CE 800.

[0061] The MAC-CE 800 may also include RS ID fields 831-834 that indicates the RS ID to be used for measurement, e.g., if the bitmap indicates an RS is to be updated, the RS ID field may indicate the RS ID to which the RS is updated. Some examples of using the MAC-CE 800 for the updates are provided below.

[0062] The scenario shown in Fig. 7 may be used in conj unction with the MAC-CE 800 to provide an example of how the MAC-CE may be used to update the UE 710 with measurement resources for candidate beams for UEIBR measurements. As described above, at time (t0) , the UE 710 may be configured with a RS resource set (S0) having RS#1, RS#2, RS#3 and RS#4. In this example, the indexes Fi may correspond to the RSs of RS resource set (S0) as follows: RS#1 is F0, RS#2 is F1, RS#3 is F2 and RS#4 is F3. The RS-IDs for the RSs of RS resource set (S0) may be as follows: RS#1 has RS-ID #2, RS#2 has RS-ID #1, RS#3 has RS-ID#10 and RS#4 has RS-ID#8.

[0063] As the UE 710 moves, at time (t1) , the network may update the UE 710 with a new RS resource set (S1) using the MAC-CE 800 in the following manner. The goal of the update is for the new RS resource set (S1) to have RS resources RS#3, RS#4, RS#5 and RS#6. Thus, the MAC-CE 800 may identify the Event 2 in the Event ID field 810 and the base station 720 in the Cell Index field 820. In this example, the RS#1 and RS#2 are being replaced by the RS#5 and RS#6, respectively. Thus, the bitmap for {F3, F2, F1, F0} may be {0, 0, 1, 1} , e.g., the RS corresponding to F0 (RS#1) and F1 (RS#2) are being updated but the RS corresponding to F2 (RS#3) and F3 (RS#4) are not being updated.

[0064] The UE 710 may process the MAC-CE and determine based on the bitmap that the RS corresponding to F0 (RS#1) and F1 (RS#2) are being updated. Since the RS#1 corresponds to the RS-ID #2, the UE 710 may update the RS#1 to the RSs identified in the RS ID#2 field 832, e.g., the RSs for the RS#5. Similarly, since the RS#2 corresponds to the RS-ID #1, the UE 710 may update the RS#2 to the RSs identified in the RS ID#1 field 831, e.g., the RSs for the RS#6. Thus, when the UE 710 applies the information from the MAC-CE 800 at time (t1) , the UE 710 will have the updated RS resource set (S1) having RS resources RS#3, RS#4, RS#5 and RS#6.

[0065] In the example above, the bitmaps for RS#3 (F2) and RS#4 (F3) were set to ‘0’ indicating that these RSs are not updated. However, the UE 710 may interpret the bitmap value ‘0’ in different manners. In a first manner, the UE 710 may interpret the bitmap value ‘0’ to indicate that the corresponding RS resources remain in the are kept in the updated RS resource set (S1) . This is how the UE 710 interpreted the bitmap value ‘0’ in the above example because the updated RS resource set (S1) includes the RS#3 and RS#4.

[0066] In a second manner, the RS resources having the bitmap value ‘0’ may be removed and not included in the updated RS resource set (S1) . If this manner of interpreting the bitmap value ‘0’ was used in the above example, the RS#3 and RS#4 may be removed from the updated RS resource set (S1) , resulting in the updated RS resource set (S1) including only the RS#5 and RS#6.

[0067] In a third manner, the UE 710 may have an option of using the first manner or the second manner of interpreting the bitmap value ‘0’ . The manner used in any particular scenario may signaled to the UE using RRC signaling or may be hard-encoded in standards (e.g., 3GPP Technical Specifications) .

[0068] In a second option of the second example, the UE may be explicitly configured with the measurement resources for candidate beams for UEIBR measurements by RRC signaling related to the TCI state configurations. For example, an IE ‘resourceForCandidateBeam’ may be explicitly added into each TCI-state configuration. In another example, a set of candidate TCI-states may be configured. The QCL-RS of the candidateTCI-states may then be used for candidate beam measurement resources.

[0069] Fig. 9 shows an example TCI-State configuration 900 including an explicit configuration of measurement resources for candidate beams for UEIBR measurements according to various example embodiments. The TCI-State configuration 900 includes the QCL information 910 as previously described with respect to Fig. 5. The TCI-State configuration 900 also includes the candidate beam measurement RS resources or TCI-states 920. For example, the TCI-State configuration 900 may include the IE ‘resourceForCandidateBeam’ 930 that explicitly indicates the measurement resources, e.g., CSI-RS, SSBs, for the candidate beams associated with the TCI state. In another example, the TCI-State configuration 900 may include the IE ‘candidateTCI-State’ 940 that includes a set of candidate TCI-states. The, as stated above, the QCL-RS of the candidateTCI-states may then be used for candidate beam measurement resources.

[0070] Fig. 10 shows an example network arrangement 1000 illustrating a UE 1010 moving with respect to a base station 1020 serving the current beam (s) and candidate beam (s) according to various example embodiments. In the example of Fig. 10, the UE 1010 is at a first location at time t0 and at a second location at time t1. In the second option of the second example, the RRC signaling simultaneously updates the measurement resources for candidate beams when the current beam is updated by downlink control information (DCI) format as described in greater detail below.

[0071] Fig. 10 also shows an illustration 1030 of the TCI state configuration, e.g., as configured by the TCI-State configuration 900. In this example, the TCI state configuration includes the TCI state #2 that includes the candidateTCI-states corresponding to RS#6, #RS8 and RS#12. Thus, at time t0, when the indicated TCI state is TCI state #2, the RS resource set (S0) ={RS#6, #RS 8 and RS#12} . The TCI state configuration also includes the TCI state #9 that includes the candidateTCI-states corresponding to RS#20, #RS23 and RS#27. Thus, as the UE 1010 moves, at time t1, and DCI is used to update the indicated TCI state to TCI state #9, the TCI state configuration implicitly updates the RS resource set (S1) = {RS#20, #RS23 and RS#27} .

[0072] In other example embodiments, a new event may be defined to update the activated Transmission Configuration Indicator (TCI) -state list to ensure beam management reliability. As described above, Event 2 may be defined as the quality of at least one beam of the candidate beams becomes an offset value better than the current beam. The new event that  may be termed ‘Event X’ , may be defined as the quality of at least one new beam (e.g. L1-RSRP) of the candidate beams becomes an offset value better than the lowest RSRP of the activated TCI states. This Event X may be used to update the activated TCI-State list.

[0073] In one option, the measurement resources for the candidate beams may be explicitly configured, for example, using the IE ‘resourceForCandidateBeam’ 610 of Fig. 6 that configures a set of CSI-RS resources or S SB resources in the RRC configuration of Event X.

[0074] In another option, the measurement resources for the candidate beams may be configured by first adding the IE ‘resourceForCandidateBeam’ 930 into each TCI-state configuration. Then, the UE may determine the activated TCI-state having the lowest L1-RSRP value and the measurement resources configured for the determined TCI-state with the lowest L1-RSRP may be used for Event X evaluation.

[0075] In a further option, the measurement resources for the candidate beams may be configured by first adding the IE ‘resourceForCandidateBeam’ 930 into each TCI-state configuration. Then, the UE may use the union of the measurement resources configured across all activated TCI-states for Event X evaluation.

[0076] Similar as Event 2, the RS type for Event X measurements may be explicitly configured by RRC signal.
