AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

In non-terrestrial networks (NTN) for Internet of Things (IoT), the accurate estimation of uplink timing advance (TA) is critical for contention-based Msg3 transmission, as inaccurate TA estimation leads to uplink interference and incorrect decoding of transmitted messages, wasting resources.

Method used

A solution is provided where a terminal device determines uplink TA estimation error and either disables or adjusts the estimated TA to ensure accurate transmission, falling back to RACH-based transmission if necessary, or using adjusted TA for contention-based transmission.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces unnecessary contention-based Msg3 transmissions, minimizing uplink interference and ensuring correct decoding of messages, thereby improving network resource efficiency.

Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a contention-based message 3 (Msg3) transmission. In an aspect, a terminal device determines uplink (UL) timing advance (TA) estimation error associated with an estimated TA. The terminal device further, based on determining the UL TA estimation error, disables a contention-based Msg3 transmission or adjusts the estimated TA to obtain a TA. In this way, unnecessary contention-based Msg3 transmission can be avoided to reduce the uplink and downlink signaling.

[0048] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things  (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0049] In the field of communication, a four-step random access channel (RACH) based early data transmission (EDT) and a preconfigured uplink resource (PUR) based transmission have been supported for early small data transmission in an IoT system. In 3GPP Rel-15, mobile originated (MO) -EDT allows one UL data transmission (in Msg3) for small data optionally followed by one DL transmission (in Msg4) during the random access procedure, avoiding UE’s transition to a radio resource control (RRC) _CONNECTED mode. Specifically, in a control plane (CP) solution, Msg3 includes an RRCEarlyDataRequest message concatenating the user data on a common control channel (CCCH) , and in a user plane (UP) solution, Msg3 includes an RRCConnectionResumeRequest message on the CCCH multiplexed with uplink user data on a dedicated traffic channel (DTCH) . In both of the CP and UP solutions, the UE needs to trigger a RACH procedure to facilitate the Msg3 transmission for data. This procedure is also referred to as a EDT procedure or a RACH-based Msg3 transmission.

[0050] Moreover, in 3GPP Rel-16, the preconfigured uplink resource (PUR) is introduced to further improve latency / efficiency for small data transmission compared to MO-EDT. Msg1 and Msg2 in the random access procedure are not needed in PUR. Instead, the UE is dedicatedly configured with physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) resources in an RRCConnectionRelease message when the UE is released to an RRC IDLE mode. The UE may request PUR resources via a specific RRC message PURConfigurationRequest. The use case assumed for the PUR is for a stationary UE in which UE’s timing advance (TA) is not changed. Specifically, a UE specific PUR transmission can be performed only when the following conditions are met: (1) The TA of the UE in IDLE state keeps valid: UE needs to firstly fulfill the timing alignment validation condition including both PUR TA timer-related criteria and reference signal received power (RSRP) -related criteria for triggering the PUR; and (2) The UE camps on the cell where pur-Config was provided (if the UE is establishing or resuming an RRC connection in a cell that is different from the cell where pur-Config was  provided, pur-Config is released) .

[0051] Notably, TA maintenance has been specified in the above solutions. In the EDT procedure, the UE can transmit a preamble in Msg1, and the network can determine the TA adjustment value based on the received preamble and send the TA adjustment command to the UE in Msg2. In the PUR procedure, the UE should store the previous TA and needs to validate the TA before sending Msg3 on the dedicated resources. Only the TA firstly fulfills the timing alignment validation condition, the UE can send Msg3 on the dedicated resources based on the stored TA.

[0052] With developments of communication systems, further investigation of the early data transmission is desired. Particularly, it is currently proposed to study support of capacity enhancements for uplink in a non-terrestrial network (NTN) for Internet of Things (IoT) by reducing the necessary uplink and downlink signaling to complete an EDT transaction. Specifically, solutions supporting a direct Msg3 transmission without Msg1 / RAR, for example, RACH-less EDT and shared PUR are proposed for further study.

[0053] Compared to the previous RACH-based Msg3 transmission and PUR-based transmission, the direct Msg3 transmission without Msg1 / RAR is a contention-based (direct) Msg3 transmission. For the contention-based Msg3 transmission, the common / shared uplink resources for the Msg3 transmission may be configured via system information. In principle, the resource configuration through system information block (SIB) signaling can be shared by all the UEs. For example, the contention-based shared (CBS) PUR configuration may be included in a system information block (SIB) message and be broadcasted to multiple UEs. When one Msg3 transmission is triggered (e.g., triggering a RRC connection establishment or resumption procedure or initiating a EDT procedure) and the Msg3 transmission requirement is met (e.g., transport block size, RSRP etc. ) , the UE can transmit Msg3 on the next available configured resources. If network receives the Msg3 correctly, it will send the acknowledgement as well as Msg4 (if have) to the UE. In this way, the uplink and downlink signaling to complete an EDT transaction can be reduced by avoiding the Msg1 and RAR.

[0054] However, for the contention-based Msg3 transmission, TA is very important for uplink transmission and one UE should maintain the accurate TA on uplink transmission to avoid unnecessary uplink interference and guarantee the Msg3 can be correctly decoded by the Network. For example, if the UEs cannot estimate the TA accurately enough (e.g., the UE  with poor global navigation satellite system (GNSS) capability) , the UE transmitting Msg3 in the shared resources will generate interference and the transmitted Msg3 cannot be correctly decoded by the Network.

[0055] Specifically, in the NTN system, due to the movement of satellite, even for stationary UEs, the TA of UE may change frequently. Thus, how to obtain the TA value for the contention-based Msg3 transmission becomes the critical issue.

[0056] Some studies suggest there is no issue on TA for Msg3 direct transmission for NTN IoT UEs since these NTN UEs have a valid timing advance estimation from UE’s location and satellite’s ephemeris, and a physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble transmission is not strictly required. Some other studies suggest RAN2 should ask RAN1 / RAN4 to evaluate / confirm if UL timing synchronization can be done by UL timing pre-compensation (to ask whether the calculated / estimated TA can meet the uplink transmission requirement in IoT NTN) . Furthermore, some studies suggest for direct Msg3 transmission for IoT NTN, valid TA maintenance is mandatory for the sake of avoiding unnecessary interference and meeting transmit timing error requirements because it is found out that some IoT NTN device (for trial) always over-estimate the TA for UL transmission (e.g., based on the UE location and satellite ephemeris / common TA parameters) .

[0057] In some embodiments of this disclosure, it has been recognized that, maintaining a TA only based on UE-based pre-compensation TA might not be sufficiently accurate for PUSCH transmission. There may need to consider the practical UE and NW implementation which will have impact on the TA pre-compensation accuracy. For example, if either of the satellite ephemeris / common TA information provided by the network or the GNSS location estimated by the UE cannot meet a high accuracy, the TA information may need further adjustment to improve accuracy. Note that the ephemeris information and common TA parameters are predictable, and the UE needs to predict the real-time value based on the broadcast information corresponding to the epochTime, thus the estimation error is accumulative. Furthermore, the UE may not estimate the TA sufficiently accurate in all scenarios. In these cases, inaccurate TA estimation is caused by the UE side, which means that the accuracy of TA is UE specific property.

[0058] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for the contention-based Msg3 transmission. In this solution, if a terminal device determines UL TA estimation error associated with an estimated TA, the terminal device can disable the  contention-based Msg3 transmission or adjust the estimated TA to obtain a TA, e.g., an actual TA for the uplink transmission.

[0059] In this way, for the UE that cannot perform accurate TA estimation, the contention-based Msg3 transmission can be disabled. The UE may fall back to the RACH-based Msg3 transmission where the PRACH preamble transmission is required and cannot be skipped. Alternatively, the estimated TA can be adjusted for a further contention-based Msg3 transmission, if there is any. Therefore, both possibilities of RACH-less and RACH-based Msg3 transmission can be achieved.

[0060] With this solution, the unnecessary contention-based Msg3 transmission can be avoided since the UE with inaccurate TA compensation will lead to the uplink interference as well as cannot transmit the UL data correctly, and thus wastes the uplink resources. In addition, this solution can support the contention-based Msg3 transmission by using the TA error information to adjust the estimated TA to guarantee that the transmitted Msg3 can be correctly decoded. Both solutions can improve the resource efficiency of the network.

[0061] Principles and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, it is to be noted that these embodiments are illustrated as examples and not intended to limit scope of the present application in any way.

[0062] Reference is first made to Fig. 1, which illustrates an example communication system 100 in which embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. Fig. 1 illustrates two types of communication networks, including a non-terrestrial network (NTN) and a terrestrial network (TN) . In the NTN network, a terminal device 110-1 and a network device 120-1 can communicate with each other. The network device 120-1 in the NTN network may be, for example, an eNB that provides communication coverage through space-borne vehicles (such as satellites) . In the TN network, a terminal device 110-2 and a network device 120-2 can communicate with each other. The network device 120-2 in the TN network may be, for example, a gNB that provides communication coverage.

[0063] In communication systems, “UL” refers to a communication link in a direction from a terminal device to a network device, and “DL” refers to a communication link in a direction from the network device to the terminal device.

[0064] It is to be understood that Fig. 1 is illustrated only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. For example, the system 100 may include any suitable  number of network devices and terminal devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0065] Communications in the communication system 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , and the future sixth generation (6G) and on the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0066] Reference is now made to Fig. 2, which shows an example of a process 200 for the contention-based Msg3 transmission according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1.

[0067] In this disclosure, the term “the contention-based Msg3 transmission” , also referred to as “the contention-based direct Msg3 transmission” is a direct Msg3 transmission without a Msg1 or a random access response (RAR) , i.e., Msg2. In some embodiments, the contention-based Msg3 transmission may comprise a RACH-less EDT or a shared PUR based transmission.

[0068] As shown in Fig. 2, the terminal device 201 and the network device 202 may be involved in the process 200. In some examples, the terminal device 201 may be an example of the terminal devices 110-1, and the network device 202 may be an example of the network device 120-1. In some other examples, the terminal device 201 may be an example of the terminal devices 110-2, and the network device 202 may be an example of the network device 120-2.

[0069] In the process 200, the terminal device 201 determines 210 UL TA estimation error associated with an estimated TA. Based on determining the UL TA estimation error, the terminal device 201 disables 220 a contention-based Msg3 transmission or adjusts the  estimated TA to obtain a TA.

[0070] In some embodiments, based on disabling the contention-based Msg3 transmission, the terminal device 201 may fall back to perform a RACH-based Msg3 transmission. The terminal device 201 may transmit a Msg1, i.e., a PRACH preamble, to the network device 202.

[0071] In some other embodiments, based on adjusting the estimated TA to obtain the TA, the terminal device 201 may use the adjusted TA to perform the contention-based Msg3 transmission. The terminal device 201 may transmit a Msg3 in the shared resources to the network device 202 with the adjusted TA.

[0072] As such, when the UE determines the UL TA estimation error, it may disable the unnecessary contention-based Msg3 transmission to reduce the uplink and downlink signaling. Alternatively, the UE may use the TA error information to adjust the estimated TA and perform the contention-based Msg3 transmission with the adjusted TA, such that the transmitted Msg3 can be correctly decoded by the network and the resource efficiency of the network can be improved.

[0073] In some embodiments, the UL TA estimation error may be a state where the estimated TA does not satisfy a criterion. In some embodiments, the UL TA estimation error may be a positive or negative value indicating the error value of the estimated TA, such that both the TA under-estimated or over-estimated case can be handled. For example, the negative value can indicate the TA error in case of over-estimation in UE.

[0074] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may determine the UL TA estimation error by receiving UL TA estimation error information indicating the UL TA estimation error. In other words, the network may notify the UE of inaccurate TA estimation information for facilitating the direct Msg3 transmission without Msg1 / RAR.

[0075] In some embodiments, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the network device 202 may determine 270 the UL TA estimation error for the terminal device 201, and transmit 280 to the terminal device 201, the UL TA estimation error information based on determining the UL TA estimation error. In some examples, the network device 202 may determine the UL TA estimation error for the terminal device 201 based on one or more previous UL transmissions from the terminal device 201.

[0076] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may receive the UL TA estimation error information by receiving a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) or a  logical channel ID (LCID) indicating the UL TA estimation error information. For example, a new DL MAC CE, a new LCID, or a new extended logical channel ID (eLCID) may be introduced to indicate this information. In some embodiments, the MAC CE or the LCID / eLCID may be carried in a Msg4 or a downlink MAC protocol data unit (PDU) for normal data transmission.

[0077] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may receive the UL TA estimation error information by receiving a radio resource control (RRC) message indicating the UL TA estimation error information. In some embodiments, the RRC message may be a RRC connection release message, e.g., a Msg4 for the UP solution. Alternatively, the RRC message may be a RRC connection setup message for the fallback case.

[0078] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may receive the UL TA estimation error information by receiving a system information block (SIB) indicating the UL TA estimation error information. For example, the network device 202 may use the SIB to broadcast the UL TA estimation error for various UEs.

[0079] In some embodiments, there may be two options for the content of the UL TA estimation error information. In the first option, the UL TA estimation error information may indicate the UL TA estimation error. As an example, the UL TA estimation error information may indicate a value of the UL TA estimation error. As another example, the UL TA estimation error information may indicate an index of a table for the UL TA estimation error.

[0080] In the second option, the UL TA estimation error information may indicate disabling the contention-based Msg3 transmission. In other words, the UL TA estimation information may directly instruct the UE to disable the contention-based Msg3 transmission function. For example, a UE that receives the UL TA estimation error information may disable the contention-based Msg3 transmission (i.e., Msg3 transmission without Msg1 / RAR) and fall back to a RACH-based Msg3 transmission. The UE may transmit the preamble (i.e., Msg1 / MsgA) to get the TA adjustment.

[0081] In addition or alternative to receiving the UL TA estimation error information from the network device 202, the terminal device 201 may determine the UL TA estimation error by itself. In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may determine the UL TA estimation error by detecting the UL TA estimation error based on a number of received TA commands. For example, the terminal device 201 may receive a number of TA commands  corresponding to a number of previous uplink transmissions. The network device 202 may transmit the TA commands to the terminal device 201 to indicate TA adjustments for the current TA. The TA commands may implicitly indicate whether the TA estimated by the terminal device 201 is accurate. For example, if the TA command indicates a significant adjustment of the current TA, the terminal device 201 may consider that the estimated TA is inaccurate.

[0082] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may detect the UL TA estimation error by detecting the UL TA estimation error based on receiving a threshold number of consecutive TA adjustment values with an upper bound index or a lower bound index. The upper bound index or the lower bound index may indicate that significant adjustments are needed for the TA. For example, if the UE receives the TA adjustment value with the upper bound index (such as “63” ) or the lower bound index (such as “0” ) for N consecutive times, the UE can consider the currently estimated TA as inaccurate and cannot transmit the Msg3 without the Msg1. In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may determine a value / level of the UL TA estimation error based on the received TA commands.

[0083] In some embodiments, the threshold number, e.g., consecutive number N, may be pre-defined. Alternatively or additionally, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the network device 202 may transmit 260, to the terminal device 201, the threshold number configured for determining UL TA estimation error. The threshold number may be a number of consecutive TA adjustment values with an upper bound index or a lower bound index. In some embodiments, the network device 202 may transmit a SIB and / or a RRC message indicating the threshold number to the terminal device 201.

[0084] Based on determining the UL TA estimation error, in some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may adjust the estimated TA to obtain a TA for a further contention-based Msg3 transmission. In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may adjust the estimated TA based on the determined UL TA estimation error. For example, the network device 202 may determine a value of the UL TA estimation error and transmit it to the terminal device 201. The terminal device 201 may use the value of the UL TA estimation error as a TA adjustment value to adjust the estimated TA. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 201 may adjust the estimated TA based on the satellite ephemeris, a common TA parameter, and / or a location of the terminal device. For example, after determining that the UL TA estimation error is present, the terminal device 201 may re-estimate / re-predict the TA based on the satellite ephemeris, a common TA parameter, and / or a location of the  terminal device so as to adjust the previously estimated TA.

[0085] Therefore, with the process 200, the NW or the UE itself can have judgement on the accuracy of the UE’s TA estimation. The NW or the UE itself can determine to disable the contention-based Msg3 transmission or adjust the estimated TA. Examples of detailed procedures are illustrated in Figs. 3 to 5.

[0086] Fig. 3 illustrates an example of a process 300 of a terminal device receiving UL TA estimation error information and disabling a contention-based Msg3 transmission according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 300 may be deemed as a detailed example of the process 200. As illustrated in Fig. 3, a UE 301 and an eNB 302 may be involved in the process 300. The UE 301 may be an example of the terminal device 110-1 and the eNB 302 may be an example of the network device 120-1 in Fig. 1.

[0087] As illustrated in Fig. 3, the eNB 302 may transmit 310 an uplink resource configuration in a SIB to the UE 301. The UE 301 may perform 315 an uplink transmission based on the uplink resource configuration. The eNB 302 may detect 320 the UL TA estimation error based on the previous uplink transmission (s) . Based on detecting 320 the UL TA estimation error, the eNB 302 may transmit 325 a new signalling indicating the UL TA estimation error to the UE 301. The new signalling may be a new MAC CE, a new LCID / eLCID, a new RRC signalling or a SIB signalling. In some embodiments, the new signalling may indicate the UL TA estimation error, e.g., a value or an index. In some other embodiments, the new signalling may indicate disabling the contention-based Msg3 transmission function.

[0088] At UE side, based on the new signalling, the UE 301 may determine to disable 330 the contention-based Msg3 transmission. The UE 301 may fall back to the RACH-based Msg3 transmission and transmit 335 a Msg1, i.e., a PRACH preamble, to the eNB 302.

[0089] With the process 300, a solution that the Network detects the UL TA estimation error and sends this information to the UE is provided. In this solution, the UE can disable the contention-based Msg3 transmission based on the Network indication.

[0090] Fig. 4 illustrates an example of a process 400 of a terminal device receiving UL TA estimation error information and adjusting an estimated TA according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 400 may be deemed as a detailed example of the process 200. As illustrated in Fig. 4, a UE 401 and an eNB 402 may be involved in the process 400. The UE 401 may be an example of the terminal device 110-1 and the eNB 402  may be an example of the network device 120-1 in Fig. 1.

[0091] As illustrated in Fig. 4, similar to Fig. 3, the eNB 402 may transmit 410 an uplink resource configuration in a SIB to the UE 401, the UE 401 may perform 415 an uplink transmission, and the eNB 402 may detect 420 the UL TA estimation error and transmit 425 a new signalling indicating the UL TA estimation error to the UE 401.

[0092] However, different from disabling the contention-based Msg3 transmission as illustrated in Fig. 3, Fig. 4 illustrates that the UE 401 may adjust 430 the estimated TA and transmit a Msg3 in shared resources with the adjusted TA. The UE 401 may adjust the estimated TA based on satellite ephemeris / acommon TA parameter, UE location and the error information received from the network. For example, a value of the UL TA estimation error may be used to adjust the estimated TA. With the adjusted TA, the UE 401 may transmit 435 a Msg3 to the eNB 402.

[0093] With the process 400, the UE can correct its TA estimation with NW assisted error correction information and have contention-based Msg3 transmission as shown in Fig. 4.

[0094] Fig. 5 illustrates an example of a process 500 of a terminal device detecting UL TA estimation error and disabling a contention-based Msg3 transmission according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 500 may be deemed as a detailed example of the process 200. As illustrated in Fig. 5, a UE 501 and an eNB 502 may be involved in the process 500. The UE 501 may be an example of the terminal device 110-1 and the eNB 502 may be an example of the network device 120-1 in Fig. 1.

[0095] As illustrated in Fig. 5, the eNB 502 may transmit 510 an uplink resource configuration in a SIB to the UE 501. The eNB 502 may further transmit 515 a threshold consecutive number N to the UE 501. The threshold consecutive number N may be defined for a number of consecutive TA adjustments with an upper bound index or a lower bound index. The threshold number N and the uplink resource configuration may be indicated in the same SIB message or separate SIB messages.

[0096] The UE 501 may perform 520 an uplink transmission based on the uplink resource configuration and the eNB 502 may transmit 525 a TA command to the UE 501 based on the uplink transmission. The TA command may be a lower bound index such as 0 or an upper bound index such as 63, which indicates that significant adjustment is needed for the current TA. The UE 501 may perform a number of uplink transmissions (e.g., uplink transmission 530) and receive a number of corresponding TA commands (e.g., TA command 535) . In a  case that the UE receives 540 N consecutive upper bound value (e.g., 63) or lower bound value (e.g., 0) , the UE may determine that the UL TA estimation error is present and thus disables the contention-based Msg3 transmission. The UE 501 may fall back to the RACH-based Msg3 transmission, and transmit 545 a Msg1 to the eNB 502.

[0097] With the process 500, a solution that the UE detects the UL TA estimation error and disables the contention-based Msg3 transmission is provided. In this solution, the UE can make such detection based on the previous TA adjustments from NW.

[0098] Fig. 6 shows a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 201 with reference to Fig. 2.

[0099] At block 610, the terminal device 201 determines uplink (UL) timing advance (TA) estimation error associated with an estimated TA. At block 620, based on determining the UL TA estimation error, the terminal device 201 disables a contention-based Msg3 transmission or adjusts the estimated TA to obtain a TA.

[0100] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may determine the UL TA estimation error by: receiving UL TA estimation error information indicating the UL TA estimation error. In some embodiments, the UL TA estimation error information may indicate a value of the UL TA estimation error or indicate an index of a table for the UL TA estimation error. In some embodiments, the UL TA estimation error information may indicate disabling the content-based Msg3 transmission.

[0101] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may receive the UL TA estimation error information by: receiving a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) or a logical channel ID (LCID) or an Extended logical channel ID (eLCID) indicating the UL TA estimation error information. In some embodiments, the MAC CE or the LCID / eLCID may be carried in a Msg4 or a downlink MAC protocol data unit (PDU) .

[0102] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may receive the UL TA estimation error information by: receiving a radio resource control (RRC) message indicating the UL TA estimation error information. In some embodiments, the RRC message may be a RRC connection release message or a RRC connection setup message. In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may receive the UL TA estimation error information by: receiving a system information block (SIB) indicating the UL TA estimation error information.

[0103] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may determine the UL TA estimation error by: detecting the UL TA estimation error based on a number of received TA commands. In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may detect the UL TA estimation error by: detecting the UL TA estimation error based on receiving a threshold number of consecutive TA adjustment values with an upper bound index or a lower bound index. In some embodiments, the threshold number may be pre-defined or configured by the network device 202.

[0104] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may further: based on disabling the contention-based Msg3 transmission, perform a random access channel (RACH) based Msg3 transmission.

[0105] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may further: based on adjusting the estimated TA to obtain the TA, perform the contention-based Msg3 transmission with the TA. In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may adjust the estimated TA based on at least one of the following: the UL TA estimation error, satellite ephemeris, a common TA parameter, or a location of the terminal device.

[0106] In some embodiments, the contention-based Msg3 transmission may be a direct Msg3 transmission without a Msg1 or a random access response (RAR) . In some embodiments, the contention-based Msg3 transmission may comprise a RACH-less early data transmission (EDT) or a shared preconfigured uplink resource (PUR) based transmission.

[0107] Fig. 7 shows a flowchart of a first example method 700 implemented at a network device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the network device 202 with reference to Fig. 2.

[0108] At block 710, the network device 202 determines uplink (UL) timing advance (TA) estimation error for the terminal device 201. At block 720, the network device 202 transmits, to the terminal device 201, UL TA estimation error information based on determining the UL TA estimation error.

[0109] In some embodiments, the UL TA estimation error information may indicate a value of the UL TA estimation error or indicate an index of a table for the UL TA estimation error. In some embodiments, the UL TA estimation error information may indicate disabling a content-based Msg3 transmission or adjusting an estimated TA associated with the UL TA estimation error.

[0110] In some embodiments, the contention-based Msg3 transmission may comprise a RACH-less early data transmission (EDT) or a shared preconfigured uplink resource (PUR) based transmission.
