ANIMAL CONTAINMENT UNITCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0002] Some dog crates lack safety' features relevant to crash performance when installed in the rear cargo area of a vehicle.

[0003] Conventional animal containment units lack a system / organizer for dog accessories to be readily and beneficially integrated with a dog crate that installs in a vehicle. Conventional accessory attachments may interlock onto wires / mesh and / or they are individual mounts for a particular accessory such as a water bowl. Such attachments are not part of a modular system that is universal. Conventional accessory attachments may include a threaded nut, clamp, or other attachment means that may take a long time to attach / detach and may not be readily operable while the unit is in a vehicle.

[0005] According to an embodiment, an animal containment unit is provided. In accordance with an aspect of the present disclosure, an animal containment unit comprises an interior compartment, and a selectively removable divider dividing the interior compartment into at least two portions.

[0006] The divider can comprise a partition wall, at least one retractable member extending from the partition wall, and an actuator operatively coupled to the at least one retractable member for moving the at least one retractable member from a first extended position to ta second retracted position. The at least one retractable member can be configured to be received in a corresponding recess of the animal containment unit when in the first positionand installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit, and the at least one retractable member can be configured to be retracted from the corresponding recess of the animal containment unit when in the second position permitting removal of the divider from the interior compartment of the animal containment unit. The actuator can be operati vely coupled to the at least one retractable member whereby linear movement of the actuator in a first direction results in linear movement of the at least one retractable member in the same direction. The partition wall can include fixed lower pegs configured to be received in a corresponding lower recesses of the animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit, and the at least one retractable member can include first and second retractable upper pegs configured to be received in a corresponding upper recesses of the animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit. At least one biasing member for biasing the first and second retractable pegs towards the first extended position can be provided. The actuator can comprise a handle supported for sliding movement relative to the partition wall. The animal containment unit can include at least two sets of upper and lower recesses, whereby the divider can be installed in at least two different positions corresponding to each of the at least two sets of upper and lower recess.

[0007] The divider can comprise a partition wall comprising a top panel and a bottom panel pivotally connected to the top panel, the top panel movable from a first position generally coplanar with the bottom panel and a second position whereat the top panel and the bottom panel extend in different plane, a locking mechanism for selectively securing the top panel relative to the bottom panel in the first position, and at least one actuator configured to release the locking mechanism to allow the top panel to pivot relative to the bottom panel. The bottom panel can include at least one static boss configured to be received in a corresponding lower recess of the animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit and the top panel can include at least one static boss configured to be received in a corresponding upper recess of the animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit. The locking mechanism can include a plunger coupled to the actuator, the plunger supported by the bottom panel and operative to engage the top panel in the first position to restrict rotation of the top panel relative to the bottom panel. The plunger can include a ramped surface for engaging a corresponding ramped surface of the top panel. The plunger can be movable to release the top panel such that the top panel can be pivoted to the second position. The plunger can be coupled to a rotatablemember supported by the bottom panel, and the actuator can be configured to rotate the rotatable member when actuated to move the plunger to release the top panel for rotation relative to the bottom panel. The actuator can include first and second actuators on opposite sides bottom panel, each of the first and second actuators operatively coupled to the rotatable member. Either actuator can be individually operable to release the top panel from the bottom panel. A least one biasing member can bias one or more of the first or second actuators or the plunger towards an engaged position with the top panel. The actuator can be adjacent a handle of the bottom panel. The actuator can be proximate an intersection of the top panel and the bottom panel of the divider.

[0085] An animal containment unit (also referred to as a crate or containment device) can be used in a vehicle to prevent and / or restrain movement of an animal and also provide crash safely features. The containment unit can be installed in the cargo area of a vehicle, for example an SUV, crossover or hatchback. The containment unit may provide a ‘‘universal” fit to mount in a majority of SUV rear cargo areas (from large SUVs down to midsize and small / crossover SUVs such as the Audi® Q3). The containment unit may be used in various other vehicles, including vans and pickup trucks. The animal containment unit can be installed to align with a seat back portion of the vehicle (or front of a cargo area of the vehicle). In certain embodiment, the animal containment unit is sized for dogs up to about 75-80 lbs. or more.

[0086] Referring to FIGS. 1 A-l 1, an animal containment unit (‘‘crate”) including accessory components in accordance with the present disclosure is illustrated and identified generally by reference numeral 10. The accessory components 14 are releasably attachable to the animal containment unit 10, as will be further described below. An animal containment unit comprising: a base and at least one sidewall at least partially defining an interior compartment having a total storage volume; and a selectively removable divider securable within the interior compartment for dividing the interior compartment into at least two portions; wherein the divider is securable within the animal containment unit in a plurality7of discrete positions.

The animal containment unit according to claim 1, wherein the divider comprises: a partition wall; at least one retractable member extending from the partition wall; and an actuator operatively coupled to the at least one retractable member for moving the at least one retractable member from a first extended position to ta second retracted position; wherein the at least one retractable member is configured to be received in a corresponding recess of the animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit; and wherein the at least one retractable member is configured to be retracted from the corresponding recess of the animal containment unit when in the second position permitting removal of the divider from the interior compartment of the animal containment unit.

3. The animal containment unit according to claim 2, wherein the actuator is operatively coupled to the at least one retractable member whereby linear movement of the actuator in a first direction results in linear movement of the at least one retractable member in the same direction.

The animal containment unit according to claim 3, wherein the partition wall includes fixed lower pegs configured to be received in a corresponding lower recesses of the animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit, and wherein the at least one retractable member includes first and second retractable upper pegs configured to be received in a corresponding upper recesses ofthe animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit.

5. The animal containment unit according to claim 4, further comprising at least one biasing member for biasing the first and second retractable pegs towards the first extended position.

6. The animal containment unit according to claim 5, wherein the actuator comprises a handle supported for sliding movement relative to the partition wall.

7. The animal containment unit according to claim 1, wherein the animal containment unit includes at least two sets of upper and lower recesses, whereby the divider can be installed in at least two different positions corresponding to each of the at least two sets of upper and lower recess.

8. The animal containment unit according to claim 1, wherein the divider comprises: a partition wall comprising a top panel and a bottom panel pivotally connected to the top panel, the top panel movable from a first position generally coplanar with the bottom panel and a second position whereat the top panel and the bottom panel extend in different planes; a locking mechanism for selectively securing the top panel relative to the bottom panel in the first position; and at least one actuator configured to release the locking mechanism to allow the top panel to pivot relative to the bottom panel.

9. The animal containment unit according to claim 8, wherein the bottom panel includes at least one static boss configured to be received in a corresponding lower recess of the animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit and the top panel includes at least one static boss configured to be received in a corresponding upper recess of the animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit.

10. The animal containment unit according to claim 9, wherein the locking mechanism includes a plunger coupled to the actuator, the plunger supported by the bottom panel andoperative to engage the top panel in the first position to restrict rotation of the top panel relative to the bottom panel.

11. The animal containment unit according to claim 10, wherein the plunger includes a ramped surface for engaging a corresponding ramped surface of the top panel.

12. The animal containment unit according to claim 11. wherein the plunger is movable to release the top panel such that the top panel can be pivoted to the second position.

13. The animal containment unit according to claim 12, wherein the plunger is coupled to a rotatable member supported by the bottom panel, and wherein the actuator is configured to rotate the rotatable member when actuated to move the plunger to release the top panel for rotation relative to the bottom panel.

14. The animal containment unit according to claim 13, wherein the actuator includes first and second actuators on opposite sides bottom panel, each of the first and second actuators operatively coupled to the rotatable member.

15. The animal containment unit according to claim 14, wherein either actuator is individually operable to release the top panel from the bottom panel.

16. The animal containment unit according to claim 15, wherein at least one biasing member biases one or more of the first or second actuators or the plunger towards an engaged position with the top panel.

17. The animal containment unit according to claim 8, wherein the actuator is adjacent a handle of the bottom panel.

18. The animal containment unit according to claim 8, wherein the actuator is proximate an intersection of the top panel and the bottom panel of the divider.

19. The animal containment unit according to claim 1, further comprising a mattress having a first panel, and a second panel, the first and second panels selectively attachable to each other.

20. The animal containment unit according to claim 1, and a mat for use under the animal containment unit, the mat including a mat body having at least one receiving feature for engaging a corresponding feature on a bottom of the animal containment unit.

21. The animal containment unit according to claim 1, wherein the divider in one of the plurality of discrete positions divides the total storage volume into two substantially equal portions.

22. The animal containment unit according to claim 1, wherein the divider in one of the plurality of discrete positions divides the total storage volume into two unequal portions.

23. The animal containment unit according to claim 22, wherein the two unequal portions includes a first storage volume and second storage volume, the first storage volume being a percentage of the total storage volume, the percentage being one of: about 33%, about 66%, about 40%, and about 60%.

24. The animal containment unit according to claim 1, further comprising an accessorybar on an exterior side of the at least one sidewall, the accessory- bar being configured to removably mount a holder.

25. The animal containment unit according to claim 24, wherein the accessory- bar includes: a top edge, a bottom edge, and a first magnetic coupling portion formed of metal and / or magnetic material; and an attachment feature for removably attaching to the accessory bar, the attachment feature including a top lip configured to engage the top edge of the accessory bar and a second magnetic coupling portion formed of metal and / or magnetic material, the first and second magnetic coupling portions being configured to magnetically attract.

26. The animal containment unit according to claim 25, wherein the attachment feature includes at least one of a hook, a clip, a bag. or a tote.

27. The animal containment unit according to claim 26, wherein the attachment feature includes a body, wherein the top lip extends from an upper portion of rear side of the body, and wherein a flange extends from a lower portion of the rear side of the body.

28. The animal containment unit according to claim 27, wherein the second magnetic coupling portion is between the top lip and the flange.

29. The animal containment unit according to claim 27, wherein the flange is configured to engage the bottom edge of the accessory bar.

30. The animal containment unit according to claim 1, further comprising a load leg configured to extend away from the containment unit and contact a portion of a vehicle.

31. A divider for dividing an interior compartment of an animal containment unit, the divider comprising: a partition wall; at least one retractable member extending from the partition wall; and an actuator operatively coupled to the at least one retractable member for moving the at least one retractable member from a first extended position to ta second retracted position; wherein the at least one retractable member is configured to be received in a corresponding recess of the animal containment unit when in the first position and installed in the interior compartment of the animal containment unit; and wherein the at least one retractable member is configured to be retracted from the corresponding recess of the animal containment unit when in the second position permitting removal of the divider from the interior compartment of the animal containment unit.

32. The divider according to claim 31. wherein the actuator is operatively coupled to the at least one retractable member whereby linear movement of the actuator in a first direction results in linear movement of the at least one retractable member in the same direction.

33. The divider according to claim 32, wherein the partition all includes fixed lower pegs, and wherein the at least one retractable member includes first and second retractable upper pegs.

34. The divider according to claim 33. further comprising at least one biasing member for biasing the first and second retractable pegs towards the first extended position.

35. The divider according to claim 34, wherein the actuator comprises a handle supported for sliding movement relative to the partition wall.

36. A divider for dividing an interior compartment of an animal containment unit, the divider comprising: a partition wall comprising a top panel and a bottom panel pivotally connected to the top panel, the top panel movable from a first position generally coplanar with the bottom panel and a second position whereat the top panel and the bottom panel extend in different planes; a locking mechanism for selectively securing the top panel relative to the bottom panel in the first position; and at least one actuator configured to release the locking mechanism to allow the top panel to pivot relative to the bottom panel.

37. The divider according to claim 36, wherein the bottom panel includes at least one static boss and the top panel includes at least one static boss.

38. The divider according to claim 36, wherein the locking mechanism includes a plunger coupled to the actuator, the plunger supported by the bottom panel and operative to engage the top panel in the first position to restrict rotation of the top panel relative to the bottom panel.

39. The divider according to claim 38, wherein the plunger includes a ramped surface for engaging a corresponding ramped surface of the top panel.

40. The divider according to claim 39, wherein the plunger is movable to release the top panel such that the top panel can be pivoted to the second position.

41. The divider according to claim 40. wherein the plunger is coupled to a rotatable member supported by the bottom panel, and wherein the actuator is configured to rotate therotatable member when actuated to move the plunger to release the top panel for rotation relative to the bottom panel.

42. The divider according to claim 41, wherein the actuator includes first and second actuators on opposite sides bottom panel, each of the first and second actuators operatively coupled to the rotatable member.

43. The divider according to claim 42, wherein either actuator is individually operable to release the top panel from the bottom panel.

44. The divider according to claim 43. wherein at least one biasing member biases one or more of the first or second actuators or the plunger towards an engaged position with the top panel.

45. The divider according to claim 236, wherein the actuator is adjacent a handle of the bottom panel.

46. The divider according to claim 36, wherein the actuator is proximate an intersection of the top panel and the bottom panel of the divider.

47. An accessory mounting system comprising: an accessory bar for an animal crate, the accessory' bar including a top edge, a bottom edge, and a first magnetic coupling portion formed of metal and / or magnetic material; and an attachment feature for removably attaching to the accessory bar, the attachment feature including a top lip configured to engage the top edge of the accessory bar and a second magnetic coupling portion formed of metal and / or magnetic material, the first and second magnetic coupling portions being configured to magnetically attract.

48. The accessory mounting system according to claim 47, wherein the attachment feature includes at least one of a hook, a clip, a bag, or a tote.

49. The accessory mounting system according to claim 47, wherein the attachment feature includes a body, wherein the top lip extends from an upper portion of rear side of the body, and wherein a flange extends from a lower portion of the rear side of the body.

50. The accessory mounting system according to claim 49, wherein the second magnetic coupling portion is between the top lip and the flange.

51. The accessory mounting system according to claim 49, wherein the flange is configured to engage the bottom edge of the accessory’ bar.

52. A mattress for an animal containment device comprising: a first panel; and a second panel; the first and second panels selectively attachable to each other.

53. The mattress according to claim 52, wherein the first panel comprises a vertical panel for attachment to a sidewall of the animal containment device and the second panel comprises a bottom panel to be received on a bottom surface of an interior of the animal containment unit.

54. The mattress according to claim 53, further comprising an elongate clip for supporting the first panel on a sidewall of the animal containment device.

55. The mattress according to claim 54, further comprising hook-and-loop fasteners for releasably connecting the first panel to the second panel.

56. A vehicle protection mat for use with an animal containment unit, the mat comprising: a mat body having at least one receiving feature for engaging a corresponding feature on a bottom of an animal containment unit.

57. The vehicle protection mat according to claim 56, wherein the at least one receiving feature comprises a receptacle for receiving a foot of the animal containment unit.

58. The vehicle protection mat according to claim 57, wherein the receptacle has a cross- sectional shape configured to closely receive a foot of the animal containment unit.

59. The vehicle protection mat according to claim 58, wherein the receptacle is a plastic receptacle.

60. An animal containment system, comprising: a containment unit having a base, at least one sidewall, and a doorway, the containment unit defining a total interior storage volume, the doorway defining a total doorway opening; a divider mounted to the containment unit, the divider configured to separate the total storage volume into a first storage volume and a second storage volume; wherein, when the divider is mounted to the containment unit, the divider separates the total doorway opening into a first opening leading to the first storage volume and a second opening leading to the second storage volume.

61. The animal containment unit according to claim 60, wherein the divider is configured to mount to the containment unit in a plurality of discrete positions to selectively change the relative size of the first and second storage volumes.

62. The animal containment unit according to claim 61, wherein the divider includes at least one upper peg and at least one lower peg, and wherein the containment unit includes at least tw o sets of upper and low er sockets for receiving the at least one upper peg and at least one lower peg of the divider, the at least two sets of upper and lower sockets corresponding to two discrete mounting positions of the divider.

63. The animal containment unit according to claim 62, wherein the at least one upper peg of the divider is retractable.

64. The animal containment unit according to claim 63, wherein the divider includes an actuator for selectively retracting the upper peg.

65. The animal containment unit according to claim 62, wherein the divider includes a top panel pivotally secured to a bottom panel, wherein the top panel is movable relative to the bottom panel between a first position whereat the top panel is coplanar with the bottom panel and a second position whereat the top panel and extends in a different plane than the bottom panel.

66. The animal containment unit according to claim 65, wherein the divider includes a plunger for selectively securing the top panel and the bottom panel in the first position.

67. The animal containment unit according to claim 66, wherein the divider includes an actuator for releasing the plunger to permit relative rotation between the top panel and the bottom panel, whereby the divider can be removed from the animal containment unit when the top panel and the bottom panel are in the second position.

68. The animal containment unit according to claim 60, further comprising a door for the total opening doorway.
