Description

[0001] FRAGRANCE COMPOSITIONS WITH CONTROLLABLE

[0002] ODOR PROFILES

[0003] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0004] This application claims the benefit of priority to United States Provisional Application Serial No. 63 / 650,858, filed May 22, 2024, the contents of which are incorporated by reference in its entirety herein.

[0005] 1. FIELD

[0006] The presently disclosed subject matter relates to fragrance compounds, and fragrance compositions containing the same, having a controllable odor profile. Specifically, the odor profile is modified by a user, upon a change in temperature setting. When set at a first temperature, a user experiences a first odor profile of a fragrance composition. When set at a second temperature, a user experiences a second odor profile of the same fragrance composition.

[0007] 2. BACKGROUND

[0008] Air freshener consumer products are widely available on the market. These products use a variety of techniques to deliver fragrance, such as diffusion or heating. Air fresheners that use a heating element allow consumers to manually adjust the strength or intensity of the fragrance by increasing or decreasing heat of the air freshener. For example, as temperature increases, the additional energy from the heat facilitates transition of more of the volatile fragrance compounds into the gas phase, thereby increasing the odor strength. These consumer products simply leverage the boiling points of various volatile fragrance compounds; though, limiting the change only to the strength or intensity of the single odor profile, not a change in the odor itself.

[0009] Heating elements in air care devices have limited impact on the fragrances being emitted. The temperatures that are applied are below any level where fragrance compositions undergo decomposition. Therefore, the odor profile is limited to strength and intensity. If a device were to exceed current temperature targets, fragrance compositions could undergo a chemical change, resulting in an odor profile change that is irreversible.

[0010] There remains a need in the art for the ability to select fragrance compounds that are stable under heating conditions, without decomposition. The current disclosure addresses this need with fragrance accord compositions having controllable odor character profiles. 3. SUMMARY

[0067] The vapor pressure of the compounds at a first and second temperature can further be evaluated by determining the difference in the logarithm of the vapor pressure at the first and second temperatures. In certain embodiments, the logarithm difference can be calculated as follows: log difference = log(VPT2) — log (VPT1) where VPTI is the vapor pressure at the first temperature (Tl) and VPT2 is the vapor pressure at the second temperature (T2). In certain embodiments, the logarithm difference of the fragrance compounds can be from about 0.5 to about 1.4, from about 0.6 to about 1.3, or from about 0.7 to about 1.2. In alternative embodiments, the logarithm difference of the fragrance compounds can be from about 0.4 to about 1.4, from about 0.4 to about 1.0; alternatively, from about 1.0 to about 1.4. In certain embodiments, the second temperature (T2) is greater than the first temperature (Tl). In alternative embodiments, the first temperature (Tl) is greater than the second temperature (T2).

[0068] Another thermodynamic property that can be used to determine an odor character modification is the enthalpy of vaporization. The enthalpy of vaporization, or heat of vaporization, is the energy needed to vaporize 1 mol of a liquid. (Zumdhal, S. S., et al. Chemistry, 8thed.; Brooks / Cole Cengage Learning, 2010.). This can be used to determine whether an odor character modification is observed. The vapor pressure of the fragrance compounds can be used to calculate enthalpy of vaporization using the Clausius Clapeyron equation, as follows: which is alternatively written as follows: where the first vapor pressure (Pi) is the vapor pressure of the fragrance compound at 25 °C (Ti) and the second vapor pressure (P2) is the vapor pressure at 20 °C (T2), and where R is 8.314 J mol1K1(physics.nist.gov / cgi-bin / cuu / Value?r). In certain embodiments, the enthalpy of vaporization is from about 20 KJ / mol to about 120 KJ / mol, from about 40 KJ / mol to about 100 KJ / mol, from about 45 KJ / mol to about 95 KJ / mol, or from about 50 KJ / mol to about 90 KJ / mol.

[0069] An additional property of fragrance compounds that can be assessed is the odor detection threshold of the compound, which measures the lowest concentration of a compound that can be detected by a human. Various methodologies exist in the art for determining odor detection threshold, including without limitation, through sensory dilution methods or olfactometry. Typical odor detection threshold values range from less than 0.0001 mg / mL to more than 10,000 mg / mL. In comparison, the odor character modifying fragrance compounds of the present disclosure have an advantageously low odor detection threshold. In fact, the odor character modifying fragrance compounds have an odor detection threshold of less than about 2 ng / L or less than about 1.6 ng / L. In certain embodiments, the odor detection threshold is at least about 0.0001 ng / L, at least about 0.0025 ng / L, or at least about 0.0005 ng / L. In particular embodiments, the odor detection threshold is from about 0.0001 ng / L to about 4 ng / L. from about 0.00025 ng / L to about 2 ng / L, from about 0.0005 ng / L to about 2 ng / L, from about 0.00055 ng / L to about 1.6 n / L, from about 0.0005 ng / L to about 0.6 ng / L, or from about 0.6 ng / L to about 1.6 ng / L.

[0070] The measurements of vapor pressure, logarithm difference, odor detection threshold, enthalpy of vaporization, and combinations thereof, as provided herein, can be used to identify odor character modifying fragrance compounds. In particular embodiments, the vapor pressure, logarithm difference, odor detection threshold, and enthalpy of vaporization are used to identify odor character modifying fragrance compounds. Values of these parameters are provided herein.

[0220] 5. EXAMPLES

[0221] The following examples are merely illustrative of the presently disclosed subject matter and they should not be considered as limiting the scope of the subject matter in any way. Example 1

[0222] The properties of various fragrance compounds were evaluated to determine if an odor character modification will be observed between a first temperature, 50 °C, and a second temperature, 80 °C. The vapor pressure (VP) values at 50 °C and 80 °C were determined computationally. These values were used to determine the difference in logarithm values, where the following equation is used: log difference = log(VP80oc) - log (VP50oc).

[0223] The enthalpy of vaporization (AH;ip) was calculated with the Clausius-Clapeyron equation using vapor pressure values at 20 °C and 25 °C computationally calculated or available in the literature. The vapor pressure of the fragrance compounds can be used to calculate enthalpy of vaporization using an equation, as follows:

[0224] The calculated logarithm difference and enthalpy of vaporization values are show n in Table 1, below;

[0225] Table 1.

[0226]

[0227] Various fragrance compounds, including compounds evaluated in Table 1, were then analyzed at 50 °C and 80 °C to determine the odor character at the two temperatures. To evaluate the odor character of the fragrance compounds, expert perfumers were provided with a liquid electric device set to achieve a wick temperature of 50 °C or 80 °C in an 800 cu. ft. booth. The fragrance compounds were mixed with dipropylene glycol methyl ether acetate (DPMA) in the amount indicated in Table 2 prior to evaluation. When odor character is identified as “weak” or “very' weak” it is understood that an odor was detected in the conditions described, but the odor had no identifiable or discriminating character.

[0228] Table 2.

[0229] As seen in Table 2, l-(2,6,6-trimethyl-3-cyclohexen-l-yl)-2-buten-l-one, 1-

[0230] (l,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-2.3.8.8-tetramethyl-2-naphthalenyl)ethanone, dodecahydro- 3a,6,6,9a-tetramethylnaphtho[2,l-b]furan, eugenol, ethyl 3-phenyloxirane-2-carboxylate, dicyclopentadiene propionate, 2-methoxy-3-(2-methylpropyl)pyrazine, (4S)-4.8-dimethyl non-7-en-2-ol, dodecanal, ethyl 2-methylpentanoate, and coumarin had an odor character modification.

[0231] Example 2

[0232] Using the odor character modifying fragrance compounds identified in Example 1, an accord composition was formulated using odor character modifying fragrance compounds and additional fragrance compounds, as seen in Table 3.

[0233] Table 3.

[0234] Example 3

[0235] A fragrance composition using the accord of Example 2 was formulated by combining 3% by weight of the accord with 97% by weight of dipropylene glycol methyl ether acetate. Expert perfumers evaluated the composition at 50 °C and 80 °C to determine the odor character and odor strength between the two temperatures. The odor strength at 50 °C was 2 and at 80 °C was 5, indicating an increase in the odor strength. At 80 °C, the composition was described as much more woody, slightly citrus (grapefruit), vetiver, and earthy than at 50 °C, demonstrating an odor character modification.

[0236] Example 4

[0237] Using odor character modifying fragrance compounds, Compositions 4A and 4B were formulated, as shown in Table 4. Composition 4A includes the facilitator compounds (4aR,5R,7aS,9R)-octahydro-2,2,5,8,8,9a-hexamethyl-4H-4a,9-methanozuleno[5,6-d]-l,3- dioxole, coumarin, ethyl maltol, lemon oil, and hexyl acetate, while Composition 4B omits the facilitator compounds (4aR,5R,7aS,9R)-octahydro-2,2.5.8,8,9a-hexamethyl-4H-4a,9- methanozuleno[5,6-d]-1.3-di oxole, coumarin, and ethyl maltol. Table 4.

[0238] The odor character at a low and high setting of each composition was evaluated by placing the composition into two air care devices and allowing the devices to ramp up for 24 hours at a medium setting. One device with Composition 4A was placed in an 800 sq ft room on a low setting and a second device was placed a second 800 sq ft room on a high setting. Expert perfumers then evaluated the odor character modification between the low and high setting, as well as the odor character at each setting. This was repeated for Composition 4B, and the odor character was determined for each composition.

[0239] Table 5.

[0240] As shown in Table 5, Composition 4A had a character change of 4, indicating a significant odor character modification, with a different odor character at the low setting and the high setting. Further, Composition 4B had an odor intensity of 3 at the low setting and 5 at the high setting, demonstrating there was a change in the intensity of the odor at the two temperatures, but a character change between the low and high setting of 1, indicating no odor character modification. This is confirmed by the lack of change between the odor characters at the low and high setting. This demonstrates that the combination of odor character modifying fragrance compounds and facilitator compounds influences the odor character profile of the compositions.

[0241] Example 5

[0242] As with Example 4, above, Compositions 5 A and 5B were formulated using the odor character modifying fragrance compounds and facilitator compounds. Composition 5A comprises the facilitator compounds (4aR,5R,7aS,9R)-octahydro-2,2,5,8,8,9a-hexamethyl- 4H-4a,9-methanozuleno[5,6-d]-l,3-dioxole, methyl 2,4-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoate. 7- methyl-2H-benzo-l,5-dioxepin-3(4H)-one, and hexyl acetate, while Composition 5B omits the facilitator compounds (4aR,5R,7aS,9R)-octahydro-2,2,5,8,8,9a-hexamethyl-4H-4a,9- methanozuleno[5,6-d]-l,3-dioxole, methyl 2,4-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoate, and 7- methyl-2H-benzo-l,5-dioxepin-3(4H)-one. The two compositions are shown in Table 6, below.

[0243] Table 6.

[0244] The odor character of Compositions 5A and 5B at a low and high setting were evaluated using the same methods as Example 4, above. Table 7.

Further, Composition 5B had an odor intensity of 1 at the low setting and 4 at the high setting, demonstrating there was a change in the intensity of the odor at the two temperatures, but a character change between the low and high setting of 1, indicating no odor character modification. This is confirmed by the lack of change between the odor characters at the low and high setting. This demonstrates that the combination of odor character modifying fragrance compounds and facilitator compounds influences the odor character profile of the compositions.

Further, Composition 6B had an odor intensity of 2 at the low setting and 4 at the high setting, demonstrating there was a change in the intensity of the odor at the two temperatures, but a character change between the low and high setting of 1, indicating no odor character modification. This is confirmed by the lack of change between the odor characters at the low and high setting. This demonstrates that the combination of odor character modifying fragrance compounds and facilitator compounds influences the odor character profile of the compositions. Example 7

[0251] As with Example 4, above. Compositions 7A and 7B were formulated using the odor character modifying fragrance compounds and facilitator compounds. Composition 7 A comprises the facilitator compounds (4aR,5R,7aS,9R)-octahydro-2,2,5,8,8,9a-hexamethyl- 4H-4a,9-methanozuleno[5,6-d]-l,3-dioxole, coumarin, ethyl maltol, lemon oil, methyl 2,4- dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoate, gamma-nonalactone, (4-tert-butylcyclohexyl) acetate, and hexyl acetate while Composition 7B omits the facilitator compounds (4aR,5R.7aS,9R)- octahydro-2,2,5,8,8,9a-hexamethyl-4H-4a,9-methanozuleno[5,6-d]-l ,3-dioxole, coumarin, ethyl maltol, methyl 2,4-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoate, and (4-lert-butylcyclohexyl) acetate.
