Description

SINGLE-LAYER SOUND-ABSORBING METAMATERIAL UNIT, SOUND-ABSORBING METAMATERIAL AND DESIGN METHODTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a single-layer sound-absorbing metamaterial unit, a sound-absorbing metamaterial and a method for designing a single-layer sound-absorbing metamaterial unit.BACKGROUND

[0002] The sound that people feel in daily lives comes from the mechanical waves formed by the vibration of air particles. Mechanical vibrations of solids and fluids also transmit sound waves. The intensity of sound waves is measured by the “sound pressure” or “sound power” . Sound pressure is the representation of air particles’ disturbance vibration, so its physical meaning amounts to the excessive pressure compared to the barometric pressure. Sound power is the energy transmitted by the sound waves per second, which is the macroscopic measurement of sound waves’ intensity in a given area. Furthermore, Sound Absorption Coefficient (SAC) is the ratio of the dissipated sound power to the incident (initial) sound power, whose value ranges from 0 to 1. The higher the sound absorption coefficient is, the less reflected or scattered sound waves become.

[0003] Conventional porous materials show broadband sound absorption at medium and high frequencies. A large number of porous materials have been commonly used like felts, glass wools, melamine and polyurethane foams. The performance of a porous material is determined by its thickness. For example, a 90 mm thick porous material is required to achieve wideband sound absorption above 1000 Hz, which a 900 mm thick porous material is required above 100 Hz. Acoustic cleaves based on layer-by-layer impedance matching are also composed of porous materials, which allows the absorption coefficient to be increased from 0.95 to 0.99  with the same thickness, but the cut-off frequency is still determined by the thickness.

[0004] Sound-absorbing materials (SAMs) are designed to dissipate incident sound power via the thermal-viscous and resonant effects. Numerous resonant SAMs, such as panel-resonant absorbers, microperforated-panel (MPP) absorbers, and their combination with porous materials, have resulted in abundant effective designs in mid-and high-frequencies.

[0005] Panel-resonant absorbers and MPP absorbers (also called MPP-Cavity resonance structures) can achieve resonance at low frequencies when the thickness is limited, but they have only one single resonance frequency and cannot achieve broadband sound absorption. Panel-resonant absorbers operate mainly around the (1, 1) mode of the panel, and the low intrinsic frequency of the panel requires a large transverse size, so they are commonly used in Plywood walls. MPP absorbers consist of a perforated panel (MPP) backed by a cavity, which is cleaner to fabricate and can be used in high-temperature conditions. The MPP provides the sound mass and resistance, while the cavity provides the sound capacitance. When the MPP absorber’s resonance occurs at the target frequency, the incident sound power is dissipated by resistance, resulting in a large absorption coefficient. MPP absorbers require a less transverse size than panel absorbers. Furthermore, MPP absorbers are inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and can effectively eliminate noise and echo.

[0006] Recently, MPPs in parallel and working in a given volume have been developed for broadband sound absorption as a kind of sound-absorbing metamaterials (SAMMs) . The main feature is the dense arrangement of multiple cells of MPP within a given volume, which results in multiple resonance peaks. In this case, each MPP is connected to its own back cavity, while the back cavities are separated by baffles to avoid mutual influence. In addition, the superposition of multiple resonance peaks can be realized to achieve broadband sound absorption if each MPP unit is overdamped, whereas the underdamped and critically damped units perform poorly. This method has been used for broadband sound absorption with sufficient  thicknesses. For example, broadband sound absorption in 300 to 6400 Hz with average absorption coefficients greater than 0.9 is achieved using a 10 cm thick SAMM, while broadband sound absorption in 100 to 1000 Hz with average absorption coefficients greater than 0.8 is achieved using a 10 cm thick SAMM. Currently, the main design method of this structure is to divide the absorbing surfaces equally or slightly differently, and to adjust the center absorption frequency of each MPP unit mainly by different depths of backing cavities.

[0007] There are needs for a SAMM unit with a low cost of production and a good performance for a broadband sound absorption, and a method for designing a SAMM unit.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0008] According to one aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a single-layer sound-absorbing metamaterial (SAMM) unit based on a microperforated panel (MPP) for absorbing incident sound with a frequency bandwidth, comprising N sub-units arranged in parallel within a single layer, each sub-unit for absorbing a sub-bandwidth of the frequency bandwidth, wherein at least two of the N sub-units have areas unequal to each other.

[0009] According to another aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a method for designing a single-layer sound-absorbing metamaterial unit based on a microperforated panel, wherein the area and the parameters of the respective sub-unit are determined based on a given thickness of the sound-absorbing metamaterial unit and a given frequency bandwidth of the sound to be absorbed.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0020] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0021] Embodiments of the present disclosure are described in detail below, and examples of the embodiments are shown in the accompanying drawings, with the same or similar labeling in each drawing denoting the same or similar elements or elements having the same or similar functions. The embodiments described below by  reference to the accompanying drawings are exemplary and are used only for the purpose of explaining the present disclosure and are not to be construed as a limitation of the present disclosure.

[0022] Unless otherwise defined, technical terms or scientific terms used herein shall have the ordinary meaning understood by a person of ordinary skill in the field to which this disclosure belongs. In the description of the present disclosure, it is to be understood that the terms "center, " "vertical, " "lateral, " "up " , "bottom" , "front" , "back" , "left" , "right" , "vertical" , "horizontal" , "top" , "bottom " "inside, " "outside, " and the like indicate orientations or positional relationships based on those shown in the accompanying drawings, solely for the purpose of facilitating a description of the present disclosure and simplifying the description, and not to indicate or imply that the device or element referred to must have a particular orientation, be constructed and operated in a particular orientation, and therefore is not to be construed as a limitation of the present disclosure. Furthermore, the terms "first" and "second" are used for descriptive purposes only and are not to be construed as indicating or implying relative importance.

[0023] Unless otherwise defined, the features used in embodiments of the present disclosure, such as “parallel” , “vertical” , and “identical” , all include strictly defined situations such as “parallel” , “vertical” , and “identical” , as well as situations where “substantially parallel” , “substantially vertical” , and “substantially identical” contain certain errors. For example, the above “substantially” can indicate that the difference between the compared objects is 10%of the average value of the compared objects, or within 5%. When the number of a component or element is not specifically specified in the following embodiments of this disclosure, it means that the component or element can be one or multiple, or can be understood as at least one. “At least one” refers to one or more, and “aplurality of” or “multiple” refers to at least two.

[0024] The present disclosure provides a single-layer sound-absorbing  metamaterial unit based on a microperforated panel for absorbing incident sound with a frequency bandwidth, comprising N sub-units arranged in parallel within a single layer, each sub-unit for absorbing a sub-bandwidth of the frequency bandwidth, wherein at least two of the N sub-units have areas unequal to each other. In one or more embodiment of the present disclosure, the N sub-units each have an area unequal to each other, such that the sound-absorbing metamaterial unit is capable of absorbing the entire frequency bandwidth of incident sound.

[0025] The present disclosure further provides a method for designing a single-layer sound-absorbing metamaterial unit based on a microperforated panel, wherein the area and the parameters of the respective sub-unit are determined based on a given thickness of the sound-absorbing metamaterial unit and a given frequency bandwidth of the sound to be absorbed. In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the method comprises the following steps: a) determining a total area of the sound-absorbing metamaterial unit; b) dividing the entire frequency bandwidth into N sub-bandwidths and determining the area of each sub-unit based on a frequency of each sub-bandwidth and the total area of the sound-absorbing metamaterial unit, wherein the larger the area of the sub-unit, the lower the corresponding frequency; c) determining the parameters for each sub-unit based on the frequency of each sub-bandwidth, the given cavity depth and the determined area of each sub-unit, wherein the given thickness comprises a cavity depth, wherein the parameters of the sub-unit comprise the presence or absence of a microperforated panel as well as the number and the diameter of the perforations of the respective microperforated panel.

[0026] In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the determination of the total area in step a) is carried out taking into account a target absorption area or taking into account a maximum size limit, wherein the maximum size limit is the size of the unit being not larger than half of a corresponding wavelength of upper limit of the frequency bandwidth. In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the frequency of each sub-bandwidth in step b) is the center frequency of each  sub-bandwidth. Here, the “target absorption area” means the actual area of any products that needs to be protected from sound pressure, and may be larger than the maximum size limit. Therefore, the determined total area may be larger or smaller than the maximum size limit, depending on practical needs. In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the parameters of a sub-unit may comprise the length of at least one extension tube, when the microperforated panel is provided with at least one extension tube to realize the absorption of low frequency sound.

[0027] In the present disclosure, each sub-unit forms an absorber, which may comprise a microperforated panel and a corresponding cavity or may only comprise a cavity without a microperforated panel. “Area” of a sub-unit means the area of an absorber receiving the incident sound. The “size” of a sub-unit with a rectangular shape is the side length of a single side, while for a circular shape it refers to diameter, and for irregular shapes it refers to equivalent diameter. In the scope of present disclosure, the “parallel arrangement” of the N sub-units means that the sub-units absorb incident sound independently, side by side. Herein N is greater than or equal to 2. In the present disclosure, the diameter or size of the pores or perforations of MPPs may be any value suitable for design requirements, for example, in the range of 0.2-5mm, and may or may not be in the micrometer range.

[0028] The above embodiment of SAMM unit according to the present disclosure is especially suitable for portable and small audio products that allow limited volume and thickness. In such applications, it is necessary not only to make the best use of the given volume, but also to achieve smooth broadband absorption in the target frequency range. Further, the reduction of fabrication cost should also be taken into consideration. The above embodiment of SAMM unit according to the present disclosure addresses the above requirements by providing N sub-units arranged in parallel within a single layer, each sub-unit for absorbing a sub-bandwidth of the frequency bandwidth, wherein at least two of the N sub-units have areas unequal to each other. In this way, the SAMM unit may absorb at least a combined frequency bandwidth of two sub-bandwidths. In one or more embodiments of the  present disclosure, the N sub-units may each have an area unequal to each other, such that the sound-absorbing metamaterial unit is capable of absorbing the entire frequency bandwidth of incident sound. This is to say, each of the sub-units is configured to have its own unique area, which is different from the areas of other sub-units, so that each sub-unit can absorb a unique sub-bandwidth among the whole bandwidth of incident sound. The absorption to the whole bandwidth of incident sound can then be realized by the combination of all sub-units of this SAMM unit of the present disclosure. For mass production, the SAMM unit can be manufactured with etching and molds without relying on costly means such as 3D printing or multiple pasting. In addition to the low cost and simplicity of the manufacturing process, the structure of this SAMM unit makes good use of the limited volume and thickness to achieve broadband sound absorption in the target frequency bandwidth.

[0029] In comparison, since the area of a MPP for a conventional SAMM unit is equally divided, unequal cavity depths are thus required to maintain the consistency of the sound resistance and resonance frequency, which substantially increases the fabricating cost. Besides, the cavity depth of the sub-units responsible for high-frequency bandwidth might be less than the maximum depth in order to perfectly absorb the sound, which results in a low utilization of the volume. Further, for portable and small audio products, the volume and thickness that can be utilized for sound absorption is often limited. The conventional design methods under the concept of equal area are less effective when thickness and volume are limited and a wide sound absorption bandwidth is required. The design method under the concept of unequal area according to the present disclosure may well be applied to such cases.

[0030] In the following, embodiments of the present disclosure will be explained in combination with some basic physical concepts for the calculation of SAC of a sound absorbing structure.

[0031] As for a sound absorbing structure, whose surface area is S, the sound absorption coefficient A is:

[0032] In Eq. (1) , A (f) is the frequency-dependent absorption coefficient, Win is the incident acoustic power, Wr is the reflected acoustic power, r (f) is the reflection coefficient, Za is the acoustic impedance of the sound absorbing surface, and Z0 is the characteristic acoustic impedance rate of the air, i.e., ρ0c0. In addition, Causality universally governs the evolution of linear time-invariant wave systems, which results in the minimal structural thickness Lmin for a bandwidth of impedance modulation. Lmin is determined by accumulating the dissipation on the lower-half plane:

[0033] In Eq. (2) , λ=c0 / f is the wavelength of the acoustic wave, and φ is the ratio of the cavity volume to the total structural volume. A (λ) is the absorption coefficient that varies with the wavelength, which can be obtained by substitution of A (f) . Considering that the total volume Vmin=LminS, the optimal design is to achieve a smooth and maximumvalue of A (λ) in the target frequency band as much as possible. It is noteworthy that the integral value in Eq. (2) is determined by the lower-frequency limit and absorption coefficient, which correspond to the maximum wavelength λmax and  respectively.

[0034] In Eq. (1) , the absorption coefficient of an acoustic structure is determined by the acoustic impedance Za of the absorbing surface, which is expressed as:

[0035] In Eq. (3) , Zan is the acoustic impedance of the n-th MPP sub-unit (i.e.,  n-th sub-unit or n-th MPP absorber) , and N is the total number of MPP sub-units. Each MPP sub-unit can be regarded as a lumped parameter system, if the sound wavelength λ is larger than the size of the total SAMM unit. For a lumped parameter system, the acoustic impedance Zan of each sound-absorbing MPP sub-unit can thus be seemed connected in parallel to obtain the acoustic impedance Za of the total SAMM unit as Eq. (3) . Therefore, the size of the total structure of the present disclosure is 25×20 mm2, where the lumped assumption can be satisfied below 12 kHz.

[0036] Fig. 1 illustrates a schematic view of a MPP monolithic piece 100 of a SAMM unit 300 (see Fig. 3) according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. The MPP monolithic piece 100 is shown here in 2D view, and have perforated micropores 102. The thickness of the panel is 0.2 mm, the depths of the micropores 102 are also 0.2 mm, and the diameters of the micropores are 0.3 mm. There are 9 MPPs 100a-100i in all, and a larger area corresponds to a lower resonance frequency. It should be noted that the 9 rectangular boxes used to mark out these 9 MPPs 100a-100i in Fig. 1 are only for illustrative purposes and are not meant to be actually present. The boundaries between these 9 MPPs 100a-100i in Fig. 1 correspond to the baffles 202 in Fig. 2, respectively.

[0037] Fig. 2 illustrates a schematic view of a backing member 200 of a SAMM unit 300 according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. The backing member 200 has a first side (the upper side in Fig. 2) facing the MPP monolithic piece 100, the first side having N cavities 200a-200i spaced apart from each other for forming the N sub-units. The backing member 200 has a second side opposite to the first side, the second side being closed to realize the absorption of the incident sound. In Fig. 2, there are 9 cavities in this backing member 200, each corresponding to one of the MPPs 100a-100i in Fig. 1. The cavities 200a-200i are 5.8 mm deep and separated by 0.8 mm thick baffles 202. In fact, the baffles 202 often occupy more than 20%of the total volume, so the volume ratio φ in Eq. (2) related to the invalid volume occupied by the baffles 202. Therefore, the total number of  sub-units, corresponding to the total number of the MPPs 100a-100i and also the total number of the cavities, is not the more the better, shall be in the range of 2-50, preferably 4-16. Besides, these sub-units are closely arranged to form one SAMM unit 300. Thereby full utilization of volume and material can be achieved. In one or more other embodiments of the present disclosure, the N sub-units may not be closely aligned.

[0038] In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the N sub-units have the same thickness as each other. Here, the thickness of a sub-unit is the dimension of the sub-unit in a direction perpendicular to the extension direction of the MPP. Thus, the entire SAMM unit has the same or equal thickness. Here, the “same” or “equal” thickness does not require that the thicknesses are absolutely the same, but may be substantially the same. Since the thickness of each sub-unit is the same, the entire SAMM unit 300 formed by the combination of the MPP monolithic piece 100 and the backing member 200 may be of the same thickness, and the depth of each cavity may also be the same. To reduce the production cost, the backing member 200 of this SAMM unit 300 may be molded in one piece, and then be pasted together with the MPP monolithic piece 100 in an air-tight manner.

[0039] In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the N sub-units each have a respective cavity, and at least a portion of the N sub-units each have a respective microperforated panel. In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, at least one of the N sub-units for absorbing medium and high frequencies does not comprise a microperforated panel.

[0040] In the present disclosure, the incident sound of a frequency bandwidth can pass through the perforations 102 in each of MPPs 100a-100i of the MPP monolithic piece 100 and enter into the corresponding cavity, so that the absorption of the incident sound may be realized through the resonance of the perforations 102 of the microperforated panel 100 and the air inside each cavity.

[0041] In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the area of the N  sub-units is set to correlate with the frequency of the sound to be absorbed, wherein the larger the area of the sub-units, the lower the corresponding frequency of the sound to be absorbed. In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the size of the sound-absorbing metamaterial unit is no larger than half of the corresponding wavelength of the upper limit of the frequency bandwidth. It may be denoted that such limitation of the size of SAMM unit to the half of the corresponding wavelength of the upper limit of the frequency bandwidth is only a preferred maximum size limit in theory. In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the actual size of SAMM unit depends on a target absorption area of products that need sound absorption and may be larger than the maximum size limit. For example, the maximum size limit is a side length of no more than 3 cm for one SAMM unit, but the target absorption area corresponds to a unit with a side length of 4 cm, so it is better to design a SAMM unit with a side length of 4 cm, whose sound absorption effect will be only slightly worse at high frequencies, but also acceptable. In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, it is also possible to design a 2cm-sized unit, where the target absorption area may be covered by four of the 2cm-sized units. However, the 2cm-sized unit may have more volume wasted by the baffles due to its small size, and ultimately this 2cm-sized unit may not be necessarily better than the 4cm-sized unit.

[0042] If a larger area need to be covered for actual need, the whole SAMM unit can be duplicated in the plane of the dense arrangement. In this case, each SAMM unit occupies the area Sa=S / N. The total impedance is calculated as below:

[0043] From Eq. (4) , the total impedance is equal to the single SAMM unit  300. For example, when the coverage area is 100×100 mm, the structure, i.e., the unit 300, needs to be copied 5×4, at which time the resulting new structure is shown in Fig. 3.

[0044] Fig. 3 illustrates a schematic view of a SAMM 400 comprising multiple SAMM units 300 according to one embodiment of the present disclosure arranged in parallel. One of SAMM units 300 is indicated by a dotted frame. In Fig. 3, the SAMM 400 comprises 20 SAMM units. To reduce the production cost, all of the 20 backing members 200 of the SAMM 400 may be molded in one piece, and all of the 20 MPP monolithic pieces 100 of the SAMM 400 may be molded in one piece. The molded pieces may then be pasted together in an air-tight manner.

[0045] The acoustic impedance Zan of each sub-unit is obtained by the series combination of the acoustic impedance, including micropores’s ound impedance ZLn, the radiated acoustic impedance Zen at the end of micropores and the acoustic impedance Zvn of the cavity. The expression of ZLn is:

[0046] In Eq. (5) , a and t are the radius and length of micropores. ZLr is the sound resistance provided by the micropores, and ZLc is the sound mass provided by the micropores. In addition, η is air sheer viscosity, φn=mnπa2 / Sis the perforation rate of the n-th sub-unit, and From Eq. (5) , we can keep the sound mass ZLc constant and thus resonate at the target frequency by simultaneously adjusting the number of sub-units mn and the radius. Meanwhile, since the sound resistance ZLr is proportional to a-3, a smaller perforation radius can increase the acoustic resistance while keeping the acoustic mass constant, which is conducive to achieving broadband sound absorption. According to Ingard and Relay’s theory, the modified impedance Zen at the radiation ends of micropores are expressed as:

[0047] In Eq. (6) , Zer is the friction damping, and Zec is the radiating sound reactance at the junction of the micropores with the external space and the internal cavity. In Zec, 0.85a corresponds to the radiating sound reactance between the micropores and external space, βa corresponds to the radiating sound reactance between the micropores and backing cavity, and β is generally less than 0.85. The sound impedance of the backing cavity is expressed as:

[0048] In Eq. (7) , Sn is the area of the n-th MPP sub-unit, k0=ω / c0 is the number of acoustic waves in the cavity, and Vn=SnL is the volume of the back cavity. At low frequencies the cavity mainly provides a sound capacitance, which is inversely proportional to the volume. At high frequencies, a correction term of cot (k0L) needs to be considered. The total acoustic impedance expression is: Zan=ZLn+Zen+Zvn             (8)

[0049] Considering Eqs. (5) - (8) , it can be found that as the frequency decreases, the sound mass of the micropores becomes smaller, but the sound capacitance of the micropores is relatively unchanged. So it is necessary to increase Sn in order to decrease the sound capacitance of the low-frequency MPP sub-unit, and thus achieve the resonant sound-absorbing at low frequencies. For the high frequency unit, the acoustic mass increases as the frequency increases, so it is rather necessary to reduce Sn to make the resonance at high frequencies. Therefore, it is evident that optimal Sn  and resonance frequency is negatively correlated, which is why we adopt the design of equal height but not equal area.

[0050] Tables I, II and III show the parameters of 6 embodiments of SAMM units (SAMM-1 to SAMM-6) according to the present disclosure. It shall be mentioned that the results are calculated using a typical computational software MATLAB, but other computational software can also be used. SAMM-1 to SAMM-4 have a thickness of 6 mm, while SAMM-5 and SAMM-6 have a thickness of 20 mm. SAMM-1 and SAMM-2 are used for the sound absorption in 1~8 kHz. SAMM-3 is used for the sound absorption from 1~3 kHz, while the panel and micropores on it have the same height of 0.2 mm. SAMM-4 is used for the sound absorption from 3~9 kHz, while the panel and micropores on it have the same height of 0.3mm. SAMM-5 is used for the sound absorption in 1~3 kHz, while the panel and micropores on it have the same height of 0.2 mm. SAMM-6 is used for the sound absorption in 100~400 Hz, while the panel is 0.8 mm thick. In SAMM-6 the lengths of several micropores are longer that the panel, so extension tubes whose inner diameter is 0.8 mm and outer diameter is 2.4 mm are used for low-frequency absorption.

[0051] Table I: Parameter of SAMM-1 and SAMM-2

[0052] Table II: Parameter of SAMM-3 and SAMM-4

[0053] Table III: Parameter of SAMM-5 and SAMM-6

[0054] Next, the results of sound absorption coefficients of the all six SAMM units (SAMM-1 to SAMM-6) are shown in Fig. 4A-4F respectively. A conventional porous material (99.6%porosity, melamine foam) was used as a contrast, and its sound absorption coefficient is also shown in these figures. In Fig. 4A and Fig. 4B, both SAMM-1 and SAMM-2 show broadband absorption from 1k to 8kHz, where the micropore diameter is 0.3 mm in SAMM-1 (Fig. 4A) and 0.2 mm in SAMM-2 (Fig. 4B) . Micropores with diameters lower than 0.8mm should be processed by etching, which applies to the situation of both SAMM-1 and SAMM-2. Besides, the thickness of SAMM-2’s panel and micropores are 0.15 mm for the etching processing restraint, that is, the micropore diameter should be no lower than thickness times 1.2. It can be found that both SAMM-1 and SAMM-2 are able to achieve an average absorption coefficient of 0.45 over 3 octaves, which is a reduction of 2.5 dB in terms of Sound Pressure Level (SPL) . In addition, the sound absorption performances of both SAMMs far exceed that of the porous material, and SAMM-2 with smaller diameters has a smoother absorption coefficient due to its higher acoustic resistance. In Fig. 4C, SAMM-3 shows an average absorption coefficient of 0.48 from 1k to 3kHz, i.e., the SPL is reduced by 2.8 dB. In Fig. 4D, SAMM-4 shows an average absorption coefficient of 0.82 from 3k to 10kHz, i.e., the SPL is reduced by 7.5 dB. The thickness decided by the Causality law corresponding to the sound absorption performance of the above four SAMMs, is about 5.7 mm, which is very close to the limit 5.8 mm. This suggests the designs of these embodiments of SAMM-1 to  SAMM-4 have reached the physical limit.

[0055] This design may be used for limited thicknesses, e.g., a thickness of 6 mm as shown by SAMM-1 to SAMM-4 in Fig. 4A to 4D, and may also apply to the situations of sufficient thickness. Fig. 4E and 4F show the sound absorption performance of a fifth embodiment (SAMM-5) and a six embodiment (SAMM-6) of designed SAMM units with thicknesses of 20 mm (SAMM-5) and 200 mm (SAMM-6) .

[0056] In Fig. 4E, SAMM-5 shows an average absorption coefficient of 0.9 at 1~3 kHz, i.e., a reduction of 10 dB in SPL with the 20 mm thickness limit. In Fig. 4F, SAMM-6 shows an average absorption coefficient of 0.84 at 100~400 Hz, i.e., a reduction of 7.7 dB in sound pressure level, with the 200 mm thickness limit.

[0057] It should be noted that the entire SAMM unit, as well as the MPP monolithic piece 100 and the backing member 200 in the individual sub-units, illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, have a square shape. The present disclosure, however, is not limited to this, and may be realized by other embodiments of any shape, such as a circle or hexagonal shape, for example.

[0058] As demonstrated above, the designed SAMM unit according to the present disclosure have a wideband sound absorption and a better performance than porous material at low frequencies. The manufacturing costs thereof are also substantially reduced by using the same cavity-depth design. Meanwhile, its sound absorption coefficient has reached the physical limit of Causality law, which means it is close to the optimal performance (if only one layer) . The single-layer SAMM unit is applicable for any scenario where a noise reduction is required, especially applicable to audio products like headphones, loudspeakers and so on for improving the sound absorption performances. Meanwhile, it is not only applicable to the audio products whose volume and thickness are limited, but also applicable to the situations when the volume and thickness are sufficient. The same advantages or benefits apply to the SAMM fabricated from the unit according to the present disclosure as well as  the design method according to the present disclosure.
