Description

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR THREE-DIMENSIONAL SEWINGTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to garment industry, and in particular to a 3D sewing system and a 3D sewing method.

[0002] TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

[0003] Three-dimensional sewing (or 3D sewing) is a technique that involves sewing curved seams to create a three-dimensional shape in a garment article. This technique is necessitated in the production of a wide range of clothing, such as suits, jackets, dresses, intimate apparels, and sportswear, where a close fit with the human body and ease of movement are of high importance. Taking T-shirts as an example, collars, sleeves and hems are typical portions that require sewing along curved contours so that the resultant shape will confirm to and fit comfortably with the wearer. Many other fashion accessories including handbags, footwear and leather goods also involve substantial 3D sewing operations in their production flows.

[0004] Up to now, sewing is still primarily performed by human workers in garment factories. Although automation is becoming more prevalent in the garment industry, the sewing operations that can be effectively automated are often limited to two-dimensional (2D) sewing with typical use of custom-designed clamps and / or fixtures, where stitching is performed on a two-dimensional plane along pre-formed guiding slots or tracks on the clamp / fixture. This method is less applicable to three-dimensional sewing processes because such processes require fabric parts or sub-assemblies to be frequently maneuvered in different directions according to the three-dimensional geometries desired. It is thus more prevalent that three-dimensional sewing tasks are executed by skilled human workers who have been adequately trained to perform such. Nevertheless, the reliance on manual labour leads to constrained productivity and increased production costs, rendering the garment  industry susceptible to the impacts of labour shortage and rising wages.

[0005] In a previous application assigned to the application, PCT / CN2024 / 079597, a 3D sewing system was proposed, in which a omnidirectional wheel is included, the previous application is incorporated hereby in entity by reference.

[0006] Therefore, there is a need for improving the 3D sewing system and the 3D sewing method.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] The present invention relates to an automated sewing system for constructing three-dimensional shapes by joining fabric pieces with respect to the contours of the cut edges. The present invention provides an automation approach to 3D sewing through which desired 3D shapes can be created from two fabric pieces. Given fabric parts that are cut to the design shapes, the present system is capable of precisely maneuvering individual fabric parts in such a way that their respective edges (or cut lines) are constantly aligned prior to sewing along the intended seamline. This resembles the process where a 3D shape is formed by joining curved edges of neighbouring components.

[0008] To achieve the object, the system employs conical-shaped rollers (or conical rollers) as fabric feeders that can rotate the fabrics around the centre of the sewing needle according to the contours of their cut edges. Additionally, the rollers are formed with surface ridges that run parallel to the main / forward feeding direction of the sewing machine while in contact with the subject fabric. Due to the line contact (between roller ridges and fabric) , an anisotropy in friction is present such that the roller’s traction along the forward feeding direction is different from that along the fabric’s rotation direction, which is comparatively stronger under a given contact pressure. The differential friction allows the fabrics to be effectively rotated by the  rollers while maintaining a forward feed. The cut edges are detected by position sensors, which provide feedback signals to facilitate computerized control of the actuators that drive the rollers. And more, by equipping an actuation unit that holds the rollers with a suspension or linear actuator, it is possible to actively adjust the contact pressure between the fabric and the rollers. That is, the conical roller and the actuation unit are able to adjust not only the roller’s altitude to accommodate different thickness of fabric but also the fabric tension, which allows stretching of the fabric where necessary like a skilled human operator does. The position sensing approach of the present system capitalizes on linear image sensor which provides a non-contact, compact, and highly disturbance-resistant sensing capability.

[0027] The edge detection subsystem can be configured to detect the edge of the fabric, so that the control subsystem may determine whether or not distance between the edge of the fabric and the needle drop point is at a desired value based on the  detected result from the edge detection subsystem, and the control subsystem is configured to instruct the driver, e.g.a AC servo motor of the conical roller, either the upper conical roller or the lower conical roller, or both to rotate the roller by a mount calculated based on the error between the distance and the desired value, the control algorithm run in the control subsystem can be a close-loop control, e.g.PID, fuzzy control, even neural network and deep learning algorithms, etc. The edge detection subsystem for each of the upper and lower fabrics may include an illuminator to emit light to the fabric and at least one image sensor, preferably a linear image sensor, to capture the light intensity emitted by the illuminator, so that the position of the edge can be calculated based on the intensity variations along the sensor, multiple image sensors can be provided to improve the precision. One of or all the image sensors are preferably extended in a direction perpendicular to the main feeding direction, and one of them is preferably extended crossing the needle drop point. However, the present disclosure is not limited thereto, other arrangement or other type of sensors may also be used.

[0028] Although in the embodiment described below, the circumferential feeding unit and the edge detection subsystem for the upper fabric and for the lower fabric are mirrored with respect to each other, it is noted that they may include different structure, or even operated in different principle, e.g.the linear actuator for upper conical roller may be a pneumatic or electrical actuator, while the linear actuator for lower conical roller may be even a manual actuator, there is no limitation thereon.

[0029] Hereinafter, the 3D sewing machine or system will be described in detail with reference to the figures.

[0030] Fig. 1 is a schematic view showing the 3D sewing system according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. In Fig. 1, the reference orientations of X, Y and Z are defined and illustrated therein. These orientations provide a standardized  framework for referencing the spatial directions within the context of the given descriptions. Where the + or -is not specified, any X / Y / Z direction mentioned in the content include both + or -senses. For example, the term “X direction” includes both X(+) and X (-) directions.

[0032] The 3D sewing system further includes a sewing subsystem 100 for sewing the fabrics; a feeding subsystem 200 for feeding the fabrics; an edge detecting subsystem 300 and a control subsystem 400, which will be described in detail later.

[0033] Sewing Subsystem

[0034] The sewing subsystem 100 includes a needle 20, a sewing controller and related components (not shown) to guide a thread and drive the needle 20 to sew the upper fabric and lower fabric together. As the sewing subsystem 100 can be any type of sewing subsystem as conceived by the person skilled in the art, detailed description will be omitted.

[0035] Feeding Subsystem

[0036] As shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the feeding subsystem for feeding the fabrics includes a main feeder 210 for feeding fabric pieces in the forward direction (i.e.+Y direction) and a circumferential feeding unit 220, the main feeder 210, as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, includes a presser foot 211 and a feed dog 212, however, it is noted that the present disclosure is not limited thereto, and other main feeder can be used, e.g. a roller foot with a feed dog or an active wheel feed may be used as the main feeder 210 to perform the same function, it can be selected according to the type (e.g.woven fabrics, leathers) and actual thickness of the fabrics, etc. by the person skilled in the art.

[0037] As shown in Fig. 2 which shows a detailed arrangement of the upper and lower conical rollers 221U and 221L of the circumferential feeding unit, the fabrics UF and LF, the fabrics separator plate 40, sewing table 30, and the sewing needle 20 and main feeder 210 of the sewing machine, as viewed along the positive X direction. The circumferential feeding unit includes an upper feeding unit 220U for the upper fabric and a lower feeding unit 220L for the lower fabric. Each of the upper feeding unit 220U and the lower feeding unit 220L includes a conical roller (respectively 221U and 221L) , a driver, e.g.an AC motor 222U and 222L for rotating the corresponding conical rollers 221U and 221L, respectively, and linear actuators 223U and 223L for respectively adjusting the level of the conical rollers 221U and 221L along the Z direction, as shown in Fig. 1.

[0038] The sewing table 30 has an opening that allows the lower roller 221L to go through the sewing table 30 and become in contact with the lower fabric LF. After the fabrics UF and LF are engaged by the sewing needle 20, they can be fed independently by the upper roller 221U and the lower roller 221L, respectively, on and against the separator plate 40. The actions of the roller 221 include (i) circumferential feeding of the fabric and (ii) provision of a drag force that acts opposite to the forward movement of the fabric, as shown in Fig. 4 and described in detail later. By effecting rotation of the roller 221 about its axis, the engaged portion of fabric is controllably rotated around the sewing needle 20, which acts approximately as the centre of rotation of the fabric. The sense and amount of feeding is determined by the difference between the detected position of the cut edge of the fabric and the desired position of the same. Secondly, due to the intended alignment of the surface ridges of the roller 221 along the Y direction (irrespective of θroller) , a frictional force is created on the fabric surface such that it gives rise to a finite tension between the roller-engaged portion of fabric (as a first traction point) and the main feeder 210 (as a second traction point) , while permitting sliding of the fabric along the Y direction. The magnitude of tension is controllable by adjusting the height of the roller 221, or the normal force of the roller 221 acting on the fabric.

[0039] Hereinafter, the conical rollers 221 in the circumferential feeding unit will be described in detail with reference to Fig. 3 to Fig. 6, wherein Fig. 3 shows the basic principle of circumferential feeding using a conical roller 221, Fig. 4 illustrates the anisotropic friction induced by the ridge-textured conical roller 221, Fig. 5A shows the conical rollers 221 used in the present disclosure with different helix angles, Fig. 5B shows positioning of the conical roller 221 corresponding to different helix angles, and Fig. 6 shows the basic operating principle of the conical roller 221 when working in conjunction with the main feeder 210 of a sewing machine.

[0040] The geometry of the conical roller 221 is derived from a three-dimensional  cone whose apex (or vertex) represents the centre of its rolling trajectory. The conical roller 221 may assume the form of a truncated cone as shown in Fig. 3. When rotated about its own symmetry axis, it is operable to feed a fabric sheet object in contact along a circumferential (or tangential) direction, especially when the sheet object is anchored at the imaginary apex of the conical roller 221. The speed of circumferential feeding depends on both the revolving speed of the roller 221 around its axis and the conical angle of the roller 221. This provides various options to adjust the feeding speed through speed control and / or geometric design parameters.

[0041] To maneuver fabric materials effectively, it is preferably that the conical roller 221 is designed with protruded textures (surface features) 224 on its outer surface to enhance traction. In a preferred configuration, the surface textures are formed in such a way that a set of parallel v-shaped surface ridges 224 are oriented with their narrow edges pointing radially outward. These ridge-shaped features tend to exhibit an anisotropy of friction along different directions when pressed against a fabric sheet. Fig. 4 provides an enlarged view of the ridge-shaped features 224. Due to dynamic friction effect and deformability of fabric materials, the features lead to a higher frictional drag F1 on the fabric along a direction perpendicular to the length of the ridge-shaped features, whereas less frictional drag F2 is resulted along a direction parallel to their length. Such anisotropic frictions enable the roller to impose a firmer grip on the fabric when feeding it perpendicular to the running direction of the surface features 224 yet permitting a sliding contact (between roller and fabric) along the running direction of the same.

[0042] However, it is noted that the surface ridges 224 do not necessarily have to take the v-shape though, such geometry tends to maximize the anisotropic effect. Other ridge textures with rounded top or even flat top are also applicable to some degree. In a preferable embodiment, the height of the surface ridge is preferably larger than the thickness of the fabric to be maneuvered so that the soft fabric tissues would  not squeeze substantially into the troughs / grooves of the roller 221 and jeopardize the anisotropic effect, however the present disclosure is not limited thereto. Alternatively, strips with high frictional coefficients can be formed or treated on the surface of the conical roller 221 to take the place of the ridges to achieve the anisotropic effect. In addition, although the ridges are shown as continuous ridges without interruption, the present disclosure is not limited thereto, there may be interruptions in the ridges depending on the desired anisotropic effect, which will not depart from the spirit of the present disclosure.

[0043] As shown in Fig. 5A, the surface features 224 of the conical roller 221 may be designed with different helix angles (or θroller) to cater for different positioning scenarios. The surface features 224 with a helix angle of zero degree (i.e., θroller = 0°) refer to the configuration where the features algin linearly towards the imaginary apex of the conical roller 221. With a fabric piece in place on a sewing machine, as illustrated in Fig. 5B, the conical roller 221 with 0° helix angle performs feeding preferably at a position directly behind the sewing needle 20 along the Y-axis, i.e., the axis parallel to the forward feeding direction of the fabric, with its imaginary apex coinciding with the needle 20 position. In this case, the conical roller feeds the fabric along a circumferential direction about a radial distance Rroller (determined by the conical angle) from the needle 20 position. Given a semi-vertical angle of the cone, α, and radius of the roller’s front face, r, Rroller can be estimated by the formula Rroller =r / sin α.

[0044] Depending on the actual geometry of the fabric piece to be sewn, the helix angle can be modified of the conical roller 221 for it to be positioned in a more optimal location relative to the fabric piece, so that the roller 221 stays in continuous contact with the fabric in the course of 3D sewing and prevents its coming off the cut edge of the fabric piece. Examples of different helix angles of the conical roller 221 and their relations to the placements of the roller 221 are provided in Fig. 5A and 5B.  In the event of 20° helix angle, the preferred location of the roller is at a radial distance of Rroller from the needle with its projected central axis subtending an angle of approximately 20° with the Y-axis. A similar approach applies to the placement of roller with a 40° helix angle. Regardless of the different cases of θroller exemplified above, it is to be noted that the surface features 224 in contact with the fabric sheet remain aligned substantially parallel to the Y-axis, i.e., the forward feeding direction (even though the top views in Fig. 5B show a different alignment) . In general, the higher the value of θroller, the more inward that the roller 221 could be positioned with respective to the fabric piece. This is particularly relevant when the cut edge of the fabric piece is of a highly positive curvature (i.e.convex-shaped) , which may likely disengage from the roller 211 when the roller’s design could only allow positioning right behind the sewing needle 20.

[0045] Regarding the sense / orientation of the surface features 224, the helix follows the “right-hand-screw” rule if the roller 221 is to feed an upper fabric piece on the left-hand side of the needle 20, or to feed a lower fabric piece on the right-hand side of the needle 20. Conversely, the helix follows the “left-hand-screw” rule if the roller is to feed an upper fabric piece on the right-hand side of the needle, or to feed a lower fabric piece on the left-hand side of the needle. Notwithstanding the situation that typical industrial sewing machines, including post bed 10 sewing machines, tend to provide more ample space for fabric manipulation on the left-hand side of the needle, the conical rollers 221 of the present invention could be configured to reside on either side of the needle 20 to cope with fabric pieces with different cut edge geometries. In one embodiment, the conical rollers 221U or 221L or both is removably attached and can be exchanged with another with different helix angle or different orientation of the helix angle as necessary.

[0046] Fig. 6 illustrates the basic operating principle of the conical roller 221 when working in conjunction with the main feeder 210. Here, the “main feeder” can be (i)  an active wheel feed, (ii) a passive roller foot with feed dog, or (iii) a classical presser foot with feed dog mechanism that operates in sync with the sewing needle’s movement, there is no limitation thereon. In Fig. 6, a conical roller is positioned to feed a fabric piece in a circumferential direction whereas a presser foot and feed dog mechanism (main feeder 210) feeds the fabric in the forward direction (i.e.+Y direction) .

[0047] Considering that the roller’s surface features 224 in contact with the fabric are substantially parallel to the Y-axis, the resulting low frictional drag along such direction may permit sliding of the fabric so that the fabric can be brought forward by the main feeder 210 irrespective of the simultaneous circumferential feeding of the conical roller. It is crucial to note that, while sliding of the fabric is permitted along the running direction of the surface features 224, the frictional drag thereof causes a finite tension to build up in the fabric. Such tension is desirable in a sense that it prevents wrinkling or puckering of the fabric during the 3D sewing operation.

[0048] Fig. 7A and Fig. 7B show the structure of the upper unit 220U or the lower unit 220L. Although Fig. 7A and 7B only shows one unit, e.g.the upper unit, it can be understood that the upper unit 220U and the lower unit 220L have the same or similar structure and thus the description on the upper unit 220U can equally applied to the lower unit 220L. However, the present disclosure is not limited there to, the upper unit 220U and the lower unit 220L can include different structure, respectively. Referring to Fig. 7, To fulfil the function of the conical roller 221 as a fabric feeder, the upper unit 220U includes a linear actuator 223 translating the conical roller 221 to enable the roller engage with the fabric and a driver 222 e.g.a motor, driving the roller to rotate, that maneuvers the fabric in a circumferential direction, thus, the upper unit 220U can provide two degrees of freedom of motions of the upper roller 221U. The linear actuator 223 may be a pneumatic linear actuator, and the motor and the roller assembly may be fixed to the linear actuator through a motor bracket 226 (or motor  housing) and a mounting interface 225. The linear actuator 223 translates the roller 221 toward and away from the fabric piece during loading and unloading operations, respectively. In particular, the pneumatic linear actuator allows the roller to exert a controlled normal force on the fabric (e.g.by varying the vertical level and / or air supply pressure) as they come into physical contact, so that desirable frictional drags can be imposed by the roller on the fabric piece during feeding. On the other hand, the rotation of the roller about its own axis is driven by a motor (e.g.an AC servo motor) . In a preferred design, the motor is connected to the roller via a flexible shaft coupler 227 to elastically accommodate minor angular misalignments between the roller 221 and the fabric. Both upper and lower units 220U and 220L may share the same actuation mechanism. However, the present disclosure is not limited thereto, the upper and lower units 220U and 220L may include different actuator to translate the roller 221 in contact with the fabric and the driver to rotate the roller 221, for example, the upper unit 220U may include the pneumatic linear actuator and the lower unit 220U and 220L may include an electric linear actuator, or the like. In addition, the linear actuator is not limited to that described above, other linear actuator, e.g.a step motor or a linear motor can also be used. In one example, the linear actuator may be a manually actuator so that the user may adjust or move the conical roller 221 as necessary manually. In one example, a pressure sensor (not shown) for detecting the pressure applied by the roller 221 on the fabric can be provided, e.g.on the shaft of roller, and the detected result can be feedback to a controller, the controller will control the linear actuator to translate the roller 221 vertically to adjust the pressure to a predetermined value.

[0049] In the case where conical rollers 221 of a different θroller are utilized, a mounting plate 228 may further be provided to facilitate repositioning of the unit. A design of the mounting plate 228 is exemplified in Fig. 7B, where one of more slots for fasteners 229 are provided along a curved path having its centre of curvature coinciding with the imaginary apex of the roller 221. The mounting plate 228 can be  connected to the base table via an additional frame.

[0050] Edge Detection Sensor Subsystem

[0051] To enable positional sensing of the fabric edges, an edge detection sensor subsystem 300 is provided. The edge detection sensor subsystem 300 includes, as illustrated in Fig. 8, an upper edge detection unit 310U for the upper fabric UF, a lower edge detection unit 310L for the lower fabric LF, and a second separator plate or a surface illumination plate 320. The upper sensor 310U and the second separator plate 320 are respectively equipped with a linear actuator 313 and 330 to facilitate independent height adjustment. Each edge detection unit 310U and 310L consists of one or more linear image sensor 311U and 311L (e.g.TCD1103GFG manufactured by Toshiba) capable of sensing local light intensity across its photosensitive surface. As shown in Fig. 9, the edge detection units 310U and 310L are provided with a curved contour at the rims to ease insertion of fabric pieces, but the present disclosure is not limited thereto.

[0052] The light sensing elements of each edge detection units 310U and 310L receive illumination from the second separator plate 320 which is furnished with light emitting panel 321U and 321L on both surfaces (As shown in the enlarged view in the circle of Fig. 8) , the light emitting panel e.g.includes an electroluminescent (EL) panel, a LED panel, a micro-LED panel, or the like. Each of the upper fabric and lower fabric UF and LF is positioned in such a way that one of its cut edges overlaps with a portion of the linear image sensors 311U and 311L. The sensors 311U and 311L are pre-calibrated to establish a baseline for what constitutes the edge of the fabric sheet material. After the upper and lower fabrics UF and LF are set into positions, the linear image sensors 311U and 311L are activated to capture images of the area where the edge of the fabric piece is located. The sensor then converts the light intensity variations along the line into electrical signals. The difference in light intensity is recorded by the sensors 311U and 311L and the edge position is  determined by an edge detection algorithm, such as Sobel, Canny, and Prewitt. Once the fabric edges are detected, the position of the edge relative to the X-axis can be determined and input to the motion control of the roller unit to calculate the amount of the rotation required to bring the cut edge to the desired position. In general, the resolution of the sensor 311 depends on the size of light sensing element, which are typically of the order of micrometre for a conventional linear image sensors. (e.g., Toshiba TCD1103GFG has a linear array of charge coupled device (CCD) measuring 5.5μm in pitch size) .

[0053] In the illustrated top view depicted in Fig. 9, the positioning of the edge detection unit 310 U and 310L in relation to the sewing machine is demonstrated. While only the upper edge detection unit 310U is depicted, it is noted that the lower edge detection unit 310L shares a similar configuration. The linear image sensors 311 within the sensor unit 310 are located in close proximity to the sewing needle 20, with their longitudinal axes oriented perpendicular to the forward feeding direction (+Y direction) . The positions of the upper and lower fabrics UF and LF are actively manuvered by their respective rollers 221, which adjust based on the detected positions of the fabric edges. Through synchronized coordination between the roller 221 and the sewing subsystem 100, the fabric pieces are effectively joined along a predetermined trajectory dictated by the spatial relationship between the cut edges and the sewing needle 20. This coordinated sewing process allows for the assembly of fabric pieces into three-dimensional shapes, with the capability to sew the upper and lower fabrics along distinct trajectories.

[0054] Where more than one linear image sensors 311 are deployed in each upper and lower edge detection sensor 311U and 311L, it is a preferable that at least one of these linear image sensors 311 has its longitudinal axis intersecting with the sewing needle’s position. The advantage of having multiple linear image sensors 311 is to enhance the accuracy of edge detection, but it is not indispensable.

[0055] Although the edge detection subsystem is described with reference to Fig. 8 and Fig. 9 to include linear image sensors 311U and 311L, the present disclosure is not limited thereto, other edge detection subsystem, e.g.described in the previous PCT application no. : PCT / CN2024 / 079597, in which the edge of the fabric is detected by detecting the barcodes covered by the fabric edge, can also be used.

[0056] Control Subsystem and Operation Method

[0057] Fig. 10 shows a block diagram illustrating the architectural layout of a control system designed for the 3D sewing system. The control system comprises a control unit, consisting of a CPU, ROM, RAM, and EEPROM components. The control unit interfaces with two servo amplifiers, each connected to an AC motor with encoder for the upper roller 221U and lower roller 221L, respectively. The control unit takes in feedback signals from the upper and lower fabric edge detection sensors each featuring a linear image sensor 311 and A / D converter for signal processing.

[0058] Additionally, the control unit communicates with a sewing machine controller, which further interfaces with an embedded controller that connects to the servo motor and encoder of the sewing subsystem, thereby enabling coordinated feeding within the system.

[0059] The above control system capitalizes on a closed-loop feedback system that drives the conical rollers 221 according to the sensors’ feedback signals. Based on the feedback signals, the rotation of each conical roller 221 is activated about its axis to bring the edge of the corresponding fabric to the predetermined position relative to the sewing needle 20. In the case that a sensor is provided to detect the pressure applied on the fabric by the rollers 221, the signal of the pressure sensor is sent to the controller, and the controller will control the linear actuator 223 for the roller to adjust the level of the rollers 221.

[0060] The present system is operable to stitch the upper and lower fabric pieces together according to the profiles of their cut edges. In doing so, the stitch line can be controlled to follow a path parallel to the cut lines, i.e., by maintaining a constant margin with respect to the cut edge, or alternatively, a path with a pre-programmed variable margin with respect to the edge. An exemplary control flow chart is illustrated in Fig. 11 which maintains a predetermined distance between the sewing needle 20 and the respective edges of the upper and lower fabric pieces UF and LF. As shown in Fig. 11, when the system is started, the method processes to a step S11 of illustrating the light emitting panel of the second separator plate 320, then in step S12, the image sensors are calibrated, the method processes to step S13 in which the images of edges of the fabrics UF and LF are captured, and the captured images are processed into signals to be sent to the controller; then in Step S14, the controller determines the edge position based on the signals from the sensors, and in Step S15, decided whether or not the edge position is at a desired distance from the sewing needle 20, if the answer is NO, in step S16, it is further decided whether or not the distance is larger or smaller than a described value, and if the answer is YES, in step S17, the controller will instruct the motor to drive the upper or lower conical roller 221U and 221L or both as necessary to adjust the edge of the upper or lower fabric UF and LF or both into a desired distance, and if the answer is NO, in step S18, the controller will instruct the motor to drive the upper or lower conical roller 221U and 221L or both as necessary to adjust the edge of the upper or lower fabric UF and LF or both into the desired distance, then the method will return to the step S13 to repeat the above process. In the case that a pressure sensor is provided to detect the pressure applied by the upper or lower roller on the fabric, another step may be included to detect the pressure and send the detected result to the controller, the controller then instructs the linear actuator to adjust the level of the roller 221 to achieve the desired pressure. The desired pressure can be empirically determined based on the type of the fabric and inputted into the system when the system is initiated.
