Description

COEXISTENT DUAL-LINK ARCHITECTURE UTILIZING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE / MACHINE LEARNING IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONSCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)

[0001] The present disclosure is part of a non-provisional application claiming the priority benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 63 / 667,840, filed 05 July 2024, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to wireless communications and, more particularly, to a coexistent dual-link architecture utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in wireless communications.BACKGROUND

[0003] Unless otherwise indicated herein, approaches described in this section are not prior art to the claims listed below and are not admitted as prior art by inclusion in this section.

[0004] In wireless communications such as mobile communications in accordance with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards, traditional mobile communication links typically function as coverage layers by using pilot symbols for channel estimation. Although such traditional mobile communication links can be robust and reliable, they nevertheless have limited ability with respect to enhancing spectral efficiency because they rely on the use of pilot symbols.

[0005] On the other hand, native-AI communication involves integrating AI / ML technique (s) into the core structure of wireless communications. More specifically, it involves an end-to-end (E2E) communication that treats the entire communication chain as a network similar to an autoencoder (AE) , aiming to jointly optimize the overall performance of the communication system. On the transmitter side, an input consists of information bits for transmission. On the receiver side, the receiver simply needs to feed received bits into a decoder network to obtain decoded output.

[0006] Therefore, there is a need for a solution of a coexistent dual-link architecture utilizing AI / ML in wireless communications to achieve higher spectral efficiency.SUMMARY

[0007] The following summary is illustrative only and is not intended to be limiting in any way. That is, the following summary is provided to introduce concepts, highlights, benefits and advantages of the novel and non-obvious techniques described herein. Select implementations are further described below in the detailed description. Thus, the following summary is not intended to identify essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended for use in determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0008] An objective of the present disclosure is to propose solutions or schemes that address the issue (s) described herein. More specifically, various schemes proposed in the present disclosure pertain to a coexistent dual-link architecture utilizing AI / ML in wireless communications. It is believed that implementations of the various proposed schemes may address or otherwise alleviate the aforementioned issue (s) .

[0010] In another aspect, a method may involve an apparatus of a network (e.g., network node or server) performing a wireless communication with a UE using a dual-link architecture comprising an artificial intelligence (AI-based E2E communication link and a mobile communication link by: (a) communicating via one of the AI-based E2E communication link and the mobile communication link as a default link; and (b) switching to communicate via the other of the AI-based E2E communication link and the mobile communication link as a fallback link responsive to one or more conditions not being met.

[0011] In yet another aspect, an apparatus may include a transceiver configured to communicate wirelessly and a processor coupled to the transceiver. The processor may perform a wireless communication with a network using a dual-link architecture comprising an AI-based E2E communication link and a mobile communication link by: (a) communicating via one of the AI-based E2E communication link and the mobile communication link as a default link; and (b) switching to communicate via the other of the AI-based E2E communication link and the mobile communication link as a fallback link responsive to one or more conditions not being met.

Overview

[0020] Implementations in accordance with the present disclosure relate to various techniques, methods, schemes and / or solutions pertaining to a coexistent dual-link architecture utilizing AI / ML in wireless communications. According to the present disclosure, a number of possible solutions may be implemented separately or jointly. That is, although these possible solutions may be described below separately, two or more of these possible solutions may be implemented in one combination or another.

[0021] FIG. 1 illustrates an example scenario 100 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. As alluded to above, native-AI communication involves integrating AI / ML technique (s) into the core structure of wireless communications. In an E2E communication link, the entire communication chain is treated as a network similar to an autoencoder, thereby jointly optimizing the overall performance of communication systems. Referring to part (A) of FIG. 1, the AI-based E2E communication link may involve an autoencoder that includes an AI-based encoder and a corresponding AI-based decoder. On the transmitter side, an input of information bits is provided to the AI-based encoder for transmission via a pass-through channel. On the receiver side, the AI-based decoder takes bits received from the pass-through channel to decode and obtain a decoded output.

[0022] Referring to part (B) of FIG. 1, under the proposed scheme, a novel dual-link architecture may be utilized to achieve optimized or otherwise enhanced overall performing in wireless communications. The dual-link architecture may involve an AI-based new link (herein interchangeably referred to as “AI Super Lean Carrier” , “6G AI Super Lean Carrier” and “AI-based E2E communication link” ) that can coexist with a traditional mobile communication system (e.g., a 5th Generation (5G)  / 6th Generation (6G) communication link) . The AI Super Lean Carrier may be a novel concept designed to establish an efficient communication link. By employing an end-to-end AI / ML architecture, it becomes possible to achieve transmission using fewer or even no pilot signals. Typically, traditional mobile communication links function as coverage layers by using pilot symbols for channel estimation. Although they are robust and reliable, these traditional links tend to have limited ability to enhance spectral efficiency because they rely on pilots. In contrast, the AI Super Lean Carrier may operate as a capacity layer without the need for pilot symbols, leading to increased spectral efficiency and higher throughput. This characteristic makes the AI Super Lean Carrier especially well-suited for high data rate applications.

[0023] Wireless communications in the traditional mobile communication system may typically involve a transmitter (TX) transmitting, and a receiver (RX) receiving, signals such as reference signals (RS) , physical downlink / uplink control channel (PXCCH) signals, physical downlink / uplink shared channel (PXSCH) signals, and so on. The data rate of the traditional mobile communication system may be in the range of 10bps / Hz ~ 30bps / Hz. On the other hand, the AI-based new link (6G AI Super Lean Carrier ) may be a data-driven communication link that transmits data only with no pilot symbols (or fewer pilot symbols compared to the traditional mobile communication system) . Accordingly, the data rate of the 6G AI Super Lean Carrier may be higher and in the range of 15bps / Hz ~ 40bps / Hz without pilot overhead. In FIG. 1, the traditional mobile communication system may be labeled as a coverage layer (CC0) as it may be utilized to provide as much user equipment (UE) coverage as possible, and the AI-based new link may be labeled as a capacity layer (CC1) as it may be utilized when high capacity is required. For instance, a central controller at a core network may trigger or otherwise invoke the 6G AI Super Lean Carrier under high-capacity scenarios, with the 5G / 6G traditional mobile communication link serving as a fallback. In some implementations, the 6G AI Super Lean Carrier may be used as the default link, and communications / transmissions may fall back to the 5G / 6G traditional mobile communication link in case of occurrence of certain condition (s) . For instance, in case that a UE (e.g., legacy UE) cannot support data-only transmission due to one or more conditions, the central controller may switch the communication link for that UE to the 5G / 6G traditional mobile communication link. Such one or more conditions may include, for example and not limited to, at least one of the following: (a) a significant change in the communication environment (e.g., as the UE moves from an open space with plenty of line-of-sight (LOS) to an urban setting with no-line-of-sight (NLOS) due to lots of obstructions) ; (b) the UE being at the edge of a cell coverage such that the strength of received signals is not sufficiently strong; (c) radio frequency (RF) impairment being too serious (e.g., due to the ambient temperature being extremely high or low or due to other environmental factors) ; and / or (d) any other factors that may affect signal transmission and / or reception.

[0024] FIG. 2 illustrates an example scenario 200 under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure. The AI Super Lean Carrier may fundamentally be an end-to-end AI architecture. This autoencoder-like structure may typically require the transmitter and receiver to be jointly or separately trained, leading to complications in control mechanisms during training. To address this complexity, under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, all training may be conducted on the receiver side in an offline manner. Once the training is complete, the receiver may employ model transfer to send a trained autoencoder model (e.g., the AI / ML architecture needed on the transmission side) to the transmitter. Advantageously, this approach may simplify control, thereby ensuring consistent and straightforward procedures. Moreover, this approach may allow the receiver to ensure that a receiver-favorable waveform is tailored to its decoding capabilities, thereby facilitating more effective recovery of the original signal.

[0025] Referring to FIG. 2, the acquisition of a trained autoencoder model may be trained on the receiver side. When the AI Super Lean Carrier is triggered or otherwise invoked (e.g., by the central controller of the network) , a receiver-favorable waveform may be transmitted for model transfer from the receiver side to the transmitter side to transfer the trained autoencoder model to the transmitter side. As shown in FIG. 2, for uplink communications, one or more servers of a wireless network (as the receiver) may perform all the training and then provide a trained encoder of the trained autoencoder model to a UE (as the transmitter) . Similarly, for downlink communications, the UE (as the receiver) may perform all the training and then provide a trained encoder of the trained autoencoder model to the wireless network (as the transmitter) .

[0026] In view of the above, under various proposed schemes in accordance with the present disclosure, a coexistent dual-link architecture may involve a new link (e.g., the AI Super Lean Carrier described above) that operates as a capacity layer requiring fewer or possibly no pilot symbols, in conjunction with a traditional mobile communication link that operates as a coverage layer, thereby leading to enhanced spectral efficiency and higher throughput. That is, the AI Super Lean Carrier may coexist with the traditional mobile communication systems to form a coexistent dual-link architecture. The AI Super Lean Carrier may be triggered by switching and controlled by a central controller of a core network. In some implementations, the AI Super Lean Carrier may be used as a default link, with a traditional mobile communication link as a fallback in case that certain conditions cannot be met. For the E2E autoencoder-based model, training may be performed at the receiver side (e.g., in an offline manner) to transmit receiver-favorable waveforms to the transmitter side. Illustrative Implementations

[0027] FIG. 3 illustrates an example communication system 300 having at least an example apparatus 310 and an example apparatus 320 in accordance with an implementation of the present disclosure. Each of apparatus 310 and apparatus 320 may perform various functions to implement schemes, techniques, processes and methods described herein pertaining to a coexistent dual-link architecture utilizing AI / ML in wireless communications, including the various schemes described above with respect to various proposed designs, concepts, schemes and systems, including network environment 100, as well as processes described below.

Additional Notes

[0055] The herein-described subject matter sometimes illustrates different components contained within, or connected with, different other components. It is to be understood that such depicted architectures are merely examples, and that in fact many other architectures can be implemented which achieve the same functionality. In a conceptual sense, any arrangement of components to achieve the same functionality is effectively "associated" such that the desired functionality is achieved. Hence, any two components herein combined to achieve a particular functionality can be seen as "associated with" each other such that the desired functionality is achieved, irrespective of architectures or intermedial components. Likewise, any two components so associated can also be viewed as being "operably connected" , or "operably coupled" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality, and any two components capable of being so associated can also be viewed as being "operably couplable" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality. Specific examples of operably couplable include but are not limited to physically mateable and / or physically interacting components and / or wirelessly interactable and / or wirelessly interacting components and / or logically interacting and / or logically interactable components.
