AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

MDF-based moldings for sliding and hinged doors are prone to moisture absorption at the bottom edge, leading to swelling and deterioration due to exposure, despite having a waterproof coating on visible surfaces.

Method used

A PVC appendage extending from the MDF core, covered by a decorative sheet, is added to the lower end of the molding, providing a watertight extension and enhanced rigidity through a tongue and groove joint.

Benefits of technology

The solution significantly extends the lifespan of the moldings by protecting against moisture while maintaining affordability, as the PVC appendage ensures durability without significantly increasing costs.

Abstract

The invention relates to mouldings such as jambs, pre-frames and similar elements used in producing the frames of sliding doors, which are normally produced from MDF boards covered externally with a decorative sheet, made of paper, wood or plastic, said mouldings often being very badly affected by moisture, e.g. liquid spillages on the floor that can be absorbed. According to the invention, starting from the above-mentioned conventional and economical structure, the mouldings include a lower attachment (5-5'-5'') at the lower end thereof, as an extension of the MDF core, which maintains the profile with which the part is provided and which is produced from PVC, said lower attachment also being covered with the external decorative sheet (4) of the part. In this way, any moisture on the floor is not absorbed by the mouldings, preventing their rapid deterioration.

Description

[0001] MOLDINGS FOR SLIDING AND SWING DOORS.

[0002] OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention relates to a series of moldings such as trims, subframes and similar elements used in obtaining the frames of sliding doors.

[0004] More specifically, the invention relates to the vertical elements involved in this type of installation, and which are normally obtained from MDF boards externally covered with a decorative sheet of paper, wood or plastic.

[0005] The object of the invention is to provide moldings that are economical and at the same time more durable than current ones, by virtue of their ability to resist humidity.

[0006] The invention is equally applicable to moldings for cabinets.

[0007] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0008] In the practical application of the invention, the substitution of solid wood with MDF is becoming increasingly common, given its lower price.

[0009] These types of moldings are made of MDF, so that to offer a better appearance the pieces are covered with a sheet of wood or plastic paper of the color or ornamentation that is deemed appropriate.

[0010] The problem with these types of devices is that MDF absorbs moisture. So, if liquids are spilled or even just during floor cleaning, moisture can reach the bottom edge of these moldings and be absorbed, causing them to swell and deteriorate very quickly. In this regard, although the piece is coated with plastic and therefore waterproof, this coating only affects the visible surfaces. The bottom edge of these pieces is cut to size, leaving the MDF exposed to moisture.

[0011] While the logical solution would be to manufacture the parts entirely from waterproof materials, the reality is that this would make them more expensive, a solution that is therefore not attractive.

[0012] EXPLANATION OF THE INVENTION

[0013] The moldings for sliding and hinged doors that are recommended fully and satisfactorily resolve the aforementioned problem, based on a simple but effective solution.

[0014] To this end, starting from the conventional structuring of this type of elongated elements, which can have very diverse profiles according to the function for which they are intended, whether as a cover, subframe, frame, etc., and in which an elongated body based on MDF participates, covered externally by a protective sheet, whether of cardboard, wood or plastic, the invention focuses its characteristics on the fact that the lower end of these pieces includes an appendage that maintains the profile given to the piece, but which is obtained in PVC, as an extension of the MDF core, also covered by the decorative outer sheet of said piece.

[0015] This appendage will have a length of approximately 5 to 20 centimeters, so that it can be cut if the height of the piece needs to be adjusted, always defining a lower support element of said molding or piece that is watertight, that is, that is not affected by humidity, significantly extending the useful life of the door frame.

[0016] To give the piece greater rigidity, this appendage is attached to the MDF core by means of a complementary tongue and groove joint, which, together with the extension of the exterior decorative sheets that run from end to end of the piece, gives sufficient rigidity to the whole.

[0017] This results in a much more durable molding system, the cost of which is not significantly increased, so its greater durability more than compensates for its manufacturing cost.

[0018] DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0019] To complement the description that follows and to aid in a better understanding of the characteristics of the invention, according to a preferred embodiment thereof, a set of drawings is included as an integral part of said description, in which, for illustrative and non-limiting purposes, the following has been represented:

[0020] Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a set of moldings made in accordance with the object of the present invention.

[0021] Figure 2 shows a view of the moldings of Figure 1 at the level of their lower end, on which the essence of the invention is focused.

[0022] PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION

[0023] In view of the figures described, it can be observed how the invention is applicable to any type of vertical moldings for the formation of frames for sliding doors, hinged doors and even wardrobes, such as caps (1), subframes (2) or frames (3), which can have very diverse profiles according to their function and intended decoration, but which in all cases are formed by an MDF core, with an exterior decorative coating or sheet (4) based on a sheet of wallpaper, plastic or wood.

[0024] Well, according to the invention, these types of vertical pieces rest on the ground at their lower end, leaving them exposed to possible moisture, such as that produced by spilled liquids, floor washing, etc.

[0025] In this respect, the invention focuses on the fact that the MDF core is complemented by a lower appendage (5-5'-5") that maintains the profile given to the piece, but which is made of PVC, as an extension of said MDF core, and is also covered by the outer decorative sheet (4) of said piece. More specifically, this appendage will have a length of approximately 5 to 20 centimeters, so that if it is necessary to partially cut the piece to adjust it to the specific needs in question, a section of water-resistant PVC will always remain corresponding to the lower end of the molding.

[0026] In this regard, this lower appendage (5-5'-5") may be attached to the DM core by adhesive, although it will preferably also include a tongue and groove joint (6) that gives greater rigidity to the assembly.

[0027] This results in a durable and economical product, ideal for forming frames in sliding doors, hinged doors or even wardrobes.
