Description

LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITIONField of the Invention

[0001] This invention relates to a lubricating oil composition and a process for lubricating an engine using said lubricating oil composition.Background of the invention

[0002] In view of the desire to reduce fuel consumption and minimise carbon footprint there is a demand to maximise fuel economy in automobiles. An important factor in the improvement of engines is enhancing the energy efficiency by which they convert fuel into power. To assist with this efficiency, there is demand for lubricating oil compositions having excellent performance, providing enhanced protection while allowing heightened fuel economy.

[0003] Further, it is desirable to extend the time period between oil drains for a lubricating oil composition which is performing under the highly complex conditions encountered in modern engines. The use of additives such as detergents to maintain engine cleanliness is well known. Neutralisation of acidic compounds is an important function of detergents. Such acidic compounds are precursors of sludge and cause engine corrosion. It is important to provide lubricating oil compositions with good initial properties, such a high initial base number (BN) , which are maintained throughout an extended oil life in order to allow longer oil drain intervals.

[0004] The advantages of certain detergents need to be carefully balanced with other properties. For example, calcium and magnesium detergents are known to impact the sulphated ash content of lubricating oil compositions as measured by ASTM D874. Sulphated ash in lubricating oil  compositions may cause clogging of gasoline particulate filters. Therefore, lubricating oil compositions with lower sulphated ash contents have generally been preferred.

[0005] EP4083173 A1 describes a lubricating oil composition comprising calcium and magnesium detergents as well as a molybdenum compound. The lubricating oil composition is claimed to provide a suitable initial base number while reducing the friction coefficient in a wide temperature range and also to provide a decreased viscosity.Summary of the Invention

[0006] The present invention provides a lubricating oil composition having a base number, measured according to the hydrochloric acid method according to JIS K2501, of at least 5mgKOH / g, said lubricating oil composition comprising:

[0007] (i) a base oil;

[0008] (ii) a calcium detergent in an amount of more than 1000ppm of calcium based on the overall weight of the lubricating oil composition;

[0009] (iii) a magnesium detergent, selected from magnesium sulfonate, magnesium salicylate and mixtures thereof, present in an amount in the range of from 350 to 600ppm of magnesium based on the overall weight of the lubricating oil composition;

[0010] wherein the magnesium detergent has a base number such that the value M of the base number (mgKOH / g) divided by the magnesium content (mass%) present in a petroleum ether solution is greater than 50 and wherein the magnesium detergent has a particle size distribution such that D50 (nm)  / D10 (nm) is no more than 1.20.

[0011] The present invention also provides a process for lubricating an internal combustion engine by applying such  a lubricating oil composition to the engine and operating the engine.Detailed Description of the Invention

[0012] One or more specific embodiments of the present disclosure will be described below. These described embodiments are examples of the presently disclosed techniques. Additionally, in an effort to provide a concise description of these embodiments, not all features of an actual implementation may be described in the specification.

[0013] When introducing elements of various embodiments of the present disclosure, the articles “a, ” “an, ” and “the” are intended to mean that there are one or more of the elements. The terms “comprising, ” “including, ” and “having” are intended to be inclusive and mean that there may be additional elements other than the listed elements. Additionally, it should be understood that references to “one embodiment” or “an embodiment” of the present disclosure are not intended to be interpreted as excluding the existence of additional embodiments that also incorporate the recited features.

[0069] Table 3 –Examples 7 to 9 (comparative)

[0070] Table 4 –Examples 10 to 13 (comparative)

[0071] Examples 1 to 6 (inventive) show high base number (HCl) above 5.0mgKOH / g in fresh oil and above 1.5 mgKOH / g after NOx bubbling. The sulphated ash contents for these examples are equal or lower to 0.85 mass%. This level of sulphated ash can prevent gasoline particulate filter clogging. Example 7 (comparative) does not contain any calcium detergent and provided an unsuitably low initial base number (HCl) which would lead to a poor capability in neutralisation of acid in use. Comparative Examples 8 and 9, containing less than 350 ppm of magnesium also provided unsuitably low initial base numbers. Comparative Example 10 demonstrates the use of a magnesium sulfonate detergent with a low value of M and a value of D50 / D10 of greater than 1.20. This example also provides an unsuitably low initial base number. The same is true for comparative example 11, with a different magnesium detergent also with M and D50 / D10 values outside the range required for the present invention. Increasing the magnesium content using the same magnesium-based detergent as in comparative example 10, in order to achieve the desirable initial base number (see comparative examples 12 and 13) lead to an unacceptably high level of sulphated ash content (greater than 0.85 mass%) for these lubricating oil compositions.
