Description

[0001] FLUID MIXING DEVICE

[0002] Introduction

[0003] The present invention relates to, but not limited to, connectors for mixing two or more fluids, especially to, but not limited to, connectors that may connect a nebuliser and a Venturi device to a delivery face mask.

[0004] Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a given name for a wide range of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties. Besides lung conditions various other conditions or complications of the throat, sinus or nose that may benefit from fluids, for example medicaments, being delivery by breathing in these fluids by a person. For example, a blocked nose may sometimes be eased by warm water vapor being breathed in.

[0005] Many people require continuous or periodic oxygen delivery supplement to aid their breathing.

[0006] Many people may benefit from both additional oxygen delivery to their lungs as well as fluid, for example a fluid medicament, to be breathed in. Prior art methods may use a nebuliser run on an oxygen supply or just air supply; or use a nebuliser to supply a medicament while also using nasal cannula to supply oxygen, both methods only give uncontrolled, or poorly controlled, oxygen delivery. Use of nasal cannula may be uncomfortable.

[0007] Some patients are critically reliant on fixed rate oxygen supply, and the removing of that fixed rate supply for even short periods of time, for example, to give separately only nebulised medication, or oxygen at un-metered concentration through a nebuliser (thus maybe greater or less amounts of oxygen then required), may be hazardous for these types of patients.

[0008] Currently there is not an easy means to do both, provide a fixed rate supplementary oxygen delivery to a user’s lungs as well as provide a fluid, for example a fluid medicament to be breathed in, especially simultaneously, and especially maintaining a fixed rate of oxygen being delivered. The current invention aims to address at least some of the problems of the prior art. In particular the present invention aims to assist in giving a simple and easy means to provide nebulised substances, for example medication, and oxygen to a user, whilst importantly able to maintain the fixed rate of oxygen supply.

[0042] In some embodiments, the exit port is configured that the vents of an engaged Venturi device, or the vents of a Venturi portion of the connector, are in fluid communication between a portion of the mixing chamber and a lumen or channel of the exit port. In some embodiments, the exit port is configured that the vents of an engaged Venturi device, or the vents of a venturi portion of the connector, are in fluid communication between the first inlet port, a portion of the mixing chamber and a lumen or channel of the exit port. This may allow nebulised substances to be entrained into the Venturi device or Venturi portion and mix with a fluid from the second inlet port, for example an oxygen mix, and exit the exit port potentially to a user.

[0043] In some embodiments, the mixing chamber partially at least surrounds the vents of a Venturi portion of the connector. In some embodiments, the mixing chamber is configured to partially at least surrounds the vents of an engaged Venturi device.

[0044] In some embodiments, the connector is configured that the vents of the Ventruri portion, or the vents of an engaged Venturi device, are partially at least open to the outside of the connector. In some embodiments, the connector only partially surrounds or partially houses a Venturi device when engaged. In some embodiments, the connector is configured that the vents of an engaged Venturi device or vents of a Venturi portion are not housed by the connector such that fluid from outside the connector is free to enter the Venturi portion, or an engaged Venturi device directly.

[0045] In some embodiments, at least a portion of the second inlet port is in alignment with the longitudinal axis of an engaged Venturi device, or the longitudinal axis of the connector, or both the connector and an engaged Venturi device.

[0046] In some embodiments, the vents of the Venturi device or Venturi portion of the connector are aligned at least partially with the entrainment ports 18 and are on the same plane. When the longitudinal axis of the connector is orientated to be vertical.

[0047] In some embodiments, the connector comprises an adjustable vent or entrainment port. In some embodiments, the connector comprises a moveable door configured to move between at least two positions, wherein the at least two positions of the door block different portions of the opening of a vent, or entrainment port, or vent of an engaged Venturi device, or vent of a Venturi portion. Advantageously one connector may be adjusted to offer different entrainment rates and thus one connector may offer a user different desired fixed rates of oxygen for example. In some embodiments, the moveable door is configured to slide adjacent a vent or entrainment port of the connector. In some embodiments, the moveable door is configured to slide adjacent a vent of a Venturi portion or is configured to slide adjacent an engaged Venturi device.

[0048] In some embodiments, the connector comprises an adjuster or adjustable level connected to an adjustable door via a strut.

[0049] In some embodiments, the connector comprises markings. In some embodiments, adjuster or adjustable level comprises markings. In some embodiments, both the connector body and the adjuster or adjustable lever or adjustable door comprise at least one marking each that corresponds to a known opening size of a vent or entrainment port of the connector, or vent of a Venturi portion or of an engaged Venturi device. In some embodiments, both the connector body and the adjuster or adjustable lever or adjustable door comprise at least one marking each that corresponds to a known fixed rate of oxygen flow from the connector.

[0050] In some embodiments, the connector is configured that positioning an engaged Venturi device with the exit port at different positions, varies the opening size of the vent of the vent or vents of the engaged Venturi device. In some embodiments, the connector comprises a fixed door that is configured to block at least of portion of a vent or vents of an engaged Venturi device. In some embodiments, the connector comprises markings that corresponds to different positions for engaging a Venturi device such that the different positions correspond to known size of opening of a vent or vents of an engaged Venturi device. In some embodiments, the top surface of the exit port comprises markings. In some embodiments, the connector comprises markings that corresponds to different positions for engaging a Venturi device such that the different positions correspond to known size-of-opening of a vent or vents of an engaged Venturi device and thus known fixed rates of oxygen when in use with an appropriate oxygen mix supply and rate of flow. It is foreseen that a Venturi device may be engaged with the connector by a force friction fit at least partially into the exit port. In some embodiments, near the exit port or perhaps on the top surface wall of the exit port there may comprise marking that a position of an engaged Venturi device may be aligned with to give a known opening size of a vent or vents of the engaged Venturi device when engaged. Thus, one connector may be used with different Venturi devices or the same Venturi device to vary the fixed rate of oxygen to a user, by differing the size of the opening available to an engaged Venturi device.

[0051] In some embodiments, the connector comprises a Venturi portion that is rotatable at least partially around the longitudinal axis relative to the connector body. In these types of embodiments, a person skilled in the art would understand that the opposite may apply that the connector body is rotatable relative to the Venturi portion at least partially around the longitudinal axis of the connector. In some embodiments, the connector comprises a Venturi portion that is rotatable at least partially around the longitudinal axis relative to the connector body and configured to rotate between at least two positions such that the at least two positions comprise different opening size of a vent or vent between the mixing chamber and the lumen of the Venturi portion. Thus different lengths of rotation of the Venturi portion, around the longitudinal axis of the connector may correspond to different opening-size of a vent or vents between the mixing chamber and a lumen of the Venturi portion and thus may offer different flow rates and may offer different fixed Oxygen delivery rates when in use for example connected to a known concentration oxygen mix and flow rate. Advantageously these embodiments may allow one connector to easily offer different fixed rates of for example Oxygen to a user.

[0052] The present invention may enable simultaneous delivery to a user, of oxygen, for example a fixed or constant delivery rate of oxygen, and a fluid from a nebuliser, for example a nebulised medicament. A person skilled in the art will understand that a Venturi device for oxygen delivery will endeavour to give a fixed or constant delivery of oxygen but that there will be variables and tolerance to this and that an exact figure is what will happen in practice and that an exact figure is not necessary.

[0053] The present invention recognises the problem of not easily providing fixed rate oxygen to a user or patient as well as providing nebulised fluids, for example, medication. Advantageously the present invention may provide a fixed rate oxygen and nebulised fluids, e.g. medication, simultaneously. The present invention in some embodiments, may do this by running the nebulised fluid e.g. medication, though the air inlets of a fitted Venturi device. In some embodiments, of the present invention the Venturi device is basically positioned or configured in a nebuliser’s immediate universe (vicinity) such that the Venturi device may entrain an air / fluid / drug / medication mix that may enable delivery of a fixed rate oxygen and nebulised fluid to a user simultaneously. Basically, in some embodiments, the nebulised substance may be entrained into the oxygen air mix of an engaged Venturi device to be able to deliver oxygen at the required rate and nebulised substance for example medication.

[0054] In some embodiments, the exit port of the connector is configured to engage with both a deliver mask and a Venturi device. In some embodiments, the exit port of the connector is configured to engage a Venturi device and a face mask or the tubing to a face mask or nasal delivery system directly or through the Venturi device.

[0055] It is foreseen that the connector of the present invention may in some embodiments, function as a nebuliser, or replace the function of the nebuliser that another nebuliser is not required to be engaged, or act as an adaptor, for example a universal adaptor, for the nebuliser to attach to or engage with. In some embodiments, the connector may function with or without a nebuliser attached. In some embodiments, a or any Venturi device engaged with the connectors may function to supply an oxygen containing gas to a user regardless if a nebuliser is attached to or engaged with the connector.

[0056] In some embodiments, the first inlet port may comprise a cap to seal the first port when a nebuliser in not engaged with the first port of the connector. In some embodiments, the first port comprises a seal or valve that is airtight when a nebuliser is not engaged to prevent air or gas entering the mixing chamber. In some embodiments, the first port comprises a seal or valve that is airtight when a nebuliser is not engaged to prevent air or gas entering the mixing chamber, opens automatically on engaging the nebuliser to enable releasably engagement of a nebuliser into the first inlet port but prevent air or gas to otherwise enter or exit from around the nebuliser. Advantageously the present invention may allow easy releasably engagement of a nebuliser to the connector, and therefore may allow easy use of a nebuliser with a breathing air source, for example a Venturi device.

[0057] In some embodiments, the first inlet port is configured for engaging with a nebuliser to form a fluid tight seal, between the connector and an engaged nebuliser. Advantageously this means that no air or fluid can enter the connectors around the sides a of nebuliser when a nebuliser is engaged with the first inlet port. This helps ensure that the nebulised substance travels towards the exit port or vents of an engaged Venturi device.

[0058] In some embodiments, the second inlet port, is configured for engaging with a Venturi device to form a fluid tight seal between the connector and an engaged Venturi device. Advantageously this means that no air or fluid can enter the connectors around the sides a of Venturi device when a Venturi device is engaged with the first inlet port. This helps that the gas or air and the nebuliser substances, which may act as a gas, are entrained into the oxygen or gas flow from the oxygen or breathe air source to the exit port and to any connected face mark or nasal tubing or the like, thus reducing of nebuliser substance escaping out of the mixing chamber or reducing the amount entrained by the gas flow from the Venturi device.

[0059] In some embodiments, the exit port, is configured for engaging with a Venturi device to form a fluid tight seal between the connector and an engaged Venturi device. Advantageously this means that no air or fluid can enter the connectors around the sides a Venturi device when a Venturi device is engaged with the first inlet port.

[0060] In some embodiments, the first inlet port, for example the nebuliser engaging port, is upstream of the second inlet port, for example the Venturi device engaging port. Upstream being when normal flow of gas, when in use, from the nebuliser and or Venturi device to the exit port or an engaged face mark or nasal tubing or the like.

[0061] In some embodiments, the first and second inlet ports form a fluid seal between the connector and an engaged nebuliser or Venturi device.

[0062] In some embodiments, the exit port is configured to form a fluid tight seal between the connector and an engaged Venturi device, a delivery mask or a fluid delivery system, or any combination of Venturi device, delivery face mask or fluid delivery system. In some embodiments, the second inlet port is configured to at least partially house a portion of a Venturi device when a said Venturi device is engaged with the second inlet port. In some embodiments, the second inlet port is configured to at least partial surround a portion of a Venturi device when a Venturi device is engaged with the second inlet port.

[0063] In some embodiments, the exit port is configured to at least partial house a portion of a Venturi device when a said Venturi device is engaged with the connector or engaged with the second inlet port or engaged with the exit port or engaged with any combination of connector, second inlet port and exit port of the connector.

[0064] In some embodiments, the circumferential walls of the second inlet port are configured to form a channel. In some embodiments, the circumferential walls of the second inlet port are configured to at least partial surround, or at least partially house, a portion of a Venturi device when a Venturi device is engaged with the second inlet port.

[0065] In some embodiments, the circumferential walls of the first inlet port are configured to form a channel. In some embodiments, the circumferential walls of the first inlet port are configured to at least partial surround, or at least partially house, a portion of nebuliser when a Venturi device is engaged with the first inlet port.

[0066] In some embodiments, the circumferential walls of the exit port are configured to form a channel. In some embodiments, the circumferential walls of the exit port are configured to at least partially surround at least a portion of a Venturi device when a Venturi device is engaged with the exit port. In some embodiments, the channel of the exit port is wider in diameter at the outer end of the exit port than the diameter of the channel at an inner portion of the channel of the exit port.

[0067] In some embodiments, the second inlet port and the exit port are opposite each other. In some embodiments, the second inlet port and the exit port are configured to be on a common axis. In some embodiments, the second inlet port and the exit port are axially aligned. In some embodiments, the second inlet port and the exit port are axially aligned and configured such that the second inlet port and exit port may releasably engage different portions of an engaged Venturi device. Advantageously this aids easy engagement of a Venturi device. It may also enable the one Venturi device to be disposed with the vents, or at least one of the vents, of the Venturi device, to be at least partially open to the inner volume of the mixing chamber.

[0068] In some embodiments, the connector is configured such that the Venturi device is disposed with the vents of the Venturi device open to the inner volume of the mixing chamber. This arrangement advantageously enables one Venturi device to be engaged partially within the connector held by one, two, or more locations that do not block the vents of the engaged Venturi device.

[0069] In some embodiments, the exit port and the second inlet port are configured to releasably engage a Venturi device such that at least one or all of the air vents of the Venturi device is distanced, or spaced away from, the inner wall surface of the connector. Advantageously this aids that the air vents of an engaged Venturi device are not blocked and nebulised substances and or oxygen air mix may be easily entrained into the oxygen air mix and exit the Venturi device.

[0070] In some embodiments, the angle of the axis of the axially aligned axes of the second inlet port and exit port is angled to the vertical axis when in an orientation of use.

[0071] In some embodiments, the connector is configured that when in use the angle of the axis of the axially aligned axes of the second inlet port and exit port is angled between 25 and 75 degrees to the horizontal. In some embodiments, the connector is configured that when in use the angle of the axis of the axially aligned axes of the second inlet port and exit port is angled between 30 and 70 degrees to the horizontal. Advantageously this may enable a good flow of fluid from the nebuliser through vents of an engaged Venturi device when the Venturi device is engaged with the second inlet port and exit port.

[0072] In some embodiments, the second inlet port and the exit port are each configured to at least partially surround at least a portion of a Venturi device when a Venturi device is engaged with both the second inlet port and the exit port. The at least portion of a Venturi device may be different portions. In some embodiments, the second inlet port and the exit port are each configured to at least partially house at least a portion of a Venturi device when a Venturi device is engaged with both the second inlet port and the exit port. This is advantageous as having two housing means to an engaging Venturi device gives a simple but secure hold to any Venturi device being engaged with the connector. The configuration allows a quick and easy attachment means but also giving good security of hold with efficient use of space required to do so.

[0073] In some embodiments, the exit port comprises a flange configured to support a Venturi device when a Venturi device is engaged with the exit port. This enables an engaging Venturi device to be positioned correctly and may provide a fluid seal when the Venturi device is engaged with the exit port. It is foreseen that in some embodiments, with a flange that the flange will be sized, shaped and configured to hold an engaged Venturi device, when a Venturi device is engaged, at the correct depth within the connector, to create a fluid seal at both the exit port and the second inlet port.

[0074] In some embodiments, wherein the second inlet port comprises a circumferential wall may be configured to at least partially house or surround:

[0075] 1 / a portion of a Venturi device; or,

[0076] 2 / an oxygen entering portion of a Venturi device; or

[0077] 3 / an oxygen source conduit or tubing of a Venturi device; or

[0078] 4 / or any combination of the above 1, 2 and 3 features, when a Venturi device is engaged with the second inlet port.

[0079] In some embodiments, the exit port of the connector, comprising a circumferential wall that is configured to at least partially house or surround:

[0080] 1 / the upper portion of a Venturi device; or,

[0081] 2 / the downstream portion of a Venturi device after the entraining portion of air into the Venturi device.

[0082] To help explain the invention, by way of example in a non-limiting example or examples: In practice when fitting a Venturi device for engagement to the connector, the oxygen source conduit for fitting to a Venturi device may be unattached from the Venturi device, the Venturi device may be slid into the exit port such that the main body of the Venturi device goes through the connector and through the mixing chamber of the connector, such that the oxygen source connecting portion or port of a Venturi device may protrude through and out of the second inlet port allowing connection to the oxygen source conduit. In some preferred embodiments a Venturi device would break or open a seal at the second inlet port when engaging with the second inlet port such that when a portion of an engaged Venturi device protrudes through the second inlet port that the seal around an engaged Venturi device is again air and fluid tight, so that air or fluid does not enter through the second inlet port around the sides of a Venturi device engaged in the second inlet port. In some preferred embodiments the conduit connecting to the oxygen source would connect to the Venturi device outside of the connector of the present invention but in alternative embodiments the conduit may connect to the Venturi device within the connector, for example partially within the connector. Likewise in some preferred embodiments when the Venturi device is engaged with the exit port there is a fluid seal formed around the Venturi device that is engaged in the exit port of the connector.

[0083] In some embodiments, the connector is configured such that a Venturi device would break or open a seal at the second inlet port when engaging with the second inlet port such that when a portion of the Venturi device protrudes through and out of the second inlet port that the seal around the Venturi device is again air and fluid tight, so that air or fluid does not enter through the second inlet port around the sides of a Venturi device engaged in the second inlet port.

[0084] In some embodiments, the second inlet port comprises a grommet.

[0085] In some embodiments, the second inlet port comprises a valve.

[0086] In some embodiments, the second inlet comprises a resealable or reclosing valve.

[0087] In some embodiments, the second inlet comprises an automatically reclosing or resealable valve.

[0088] In some embodiments, the valve of the second inlet port is a self-closing valve. In some embodiments, the valve of the second inlet port is configured to open on engagement with a Venturi device and is configured to close on disengagement with a Venturi device.

[0089] In some embodiments, the valve of the second inlet port is configured to enable a portion of an engaged Venturi device to protrude out of the second inlet port.

[0090] In some embodiments, the valve of the second inlet port is configured to form a seal between the second inlet port and an engaged Venturi device.

[0091] In some embodiments, the exit port is configured to form a seal between the exit port and an engaged Venturi device.

[0092] In some embodiments, the second inlet comprises an automatically reclosing or resealable valve configured to enable engagement with a Venturi device or impermeable to the transfer of fluid in or out of the second inlet port when not engaged with a Venturi device.

[0093] This has the advantage that the valve can be opened and closed easily, for example when engaging with a Venturi device and when not, and that only the fluid from a desired connected oxygen source may enter the connector through a Venturi device when engaged with the second inlet port while no other fluids enter or exit though the second inlet port.

[0094] In some embodiments, the second inlet port comprises a seal that is configured, that in a first configuration when there is not a Venturi device engaged with the second inlet port, to be fluid impermeable preventing fluid entering or exiting the connector through the second inlet port, and that the seal is also configured in an at least second configuration when a Venturi device is engaged with the second inlet port to enable engagement with a Venturi device but also configured to form a fluid impermeable seal around a Venturi device engaged with the second inlet port. Advantageously this may ensure that there is always some sort of a fluid seal at the second inlet port whether a Venturi device is fitted or not. This is useful as then the connector can be used as a nebuliser connector to a face mask without a Venturi device supplying oxygen, and increases the working options of the connector. In some embodiments, the second inlet port comprises a valve wherein the valve comprises a dispensing valve or a split valve, for example a silicone split valve.

[0095] In some embodiments, the valve is configured to be biased closed and fluid tight when closed but is also configured to be openable when engaging a Venturi device with the connector and through the second inlet port.

[0096] In some embodiments, the valve is configured to form a fluid tight seal with an engaged Venturi device when engaged with the connector or second inlet port of the connector. Advantageously this may allow a quick and easy connection of a Venturi device to the connector, without the need of a separate or time-consuming sealing means. It also means that the connector can act as a connector from a nebuliser to a delivery face mask of other type of fluid delivery system without a Venturi device or oxygen source.

[0097] In some embodiments, the first inlet port comprises a grommet.

Thus, a Venturi device may be securely connected to either or both of the second inlet port and or the exit port. In some embodiments, corresponding screw threads of the Venturi device and either of, or both of, the exit port and second inlet port may be configured to give a secure or airtight engagement when a Venturi device is engaged with the connector via the exit port, the second inlet port, or both the exit port and the second inlet port.

[0108] In some embodiments, the exit port comprises a corresponding friction fit component that is configured to correspond to a corresponding friction fit component of a Venturi device. The corresponding friction component of the Venturi device may be a surface of the Venturi device. In some embodiments, the exit port is configured to have a friction fit component configured to enable a friction fit with a Venturi device. Advantageously this allows the two components to engage easily and disengage easily when required.

[0109] In some embodiments, the engagement is a releasable engagement.

[0110] In some embodiments, the exit port comprises a connection means that comprises a friction-fit-surface configured to correspond to at least part of a surface of a Venturi device, to enable a secure or airtight engagement when the Venturi device is engaged with the exit port. In some embodiments, the second inlet port comprises a connection means that comprises a friction-fit-surface configured to correspond to at least part of a surface of a Venturi device, to enable a secure or airtight engagement when the Venturi device is engaged with the second inlet port. In some embodiments, the exit port and the second inlet port comprise a connection means that comprises friction-fit-surfaces that are configured to correspond to at least part of a surface of a Venturi device, to enable a secure or airtight engagement of the connector and the Venturi device. Thus, a Venturi device may be securely and airtightly connected to either or both of the second inlet port and or the exit port. In some embodiments, the first inlet port comprises a friction-fit-surface configured to correspond to at least part of a surface of a nebuliser, such that when the nebuliser is fitted a secure or airtight engagement is achieved.

[0111] Other embodiments of the invention may use different securing or engagement means, including for example, screws and I or friction-fit-surfaces to enable a secure or airtight seal or engagement of the nebuliser and I or Venturi device to the connector, for example but other mechanical engagement mechanism such as clips, for example.

[0112] It is foreseen that a person skilled in the art will understand that a mating engagement mechanism may have a part on one item and another corresponding mating part on another item and thus by the term mating mechanism includes in meaning that only part, of what may be the full mated mechanism, is on the connector.

[0113] In some embodiments, the nebuliser or the Venturi device or both the nebuliser and Venturi device may engage with a connector by a clip.

[0114] In some embodiments, the connector or engaging means or mechanism of the connector comprises friction-fit type surfaces or friction-fit means that a nebuliser and / or Venturi device can be engaged to a connector of the present invention by a push action that overcomes a certain amount of frictional force but once pushed passed this resistance, releasably holds the nebuliser and or Venturi device firmly engaged with the connector. To release the nebuliser and I or Venturi device from the connector an opposition direction force to engaging for example a pull or separating force, by a user, to separate an engaged nebuliser and or Venturi device from the connector. In practice with these friction-fit type or friction-fit type means embodiments, the pull or separating force may overcome some resistance force before separating but both the connector and / or nebuliser may be configured and manufacture to be strong enough to maybe flex in shape enough to allow the engaging and disengaging of the two parts without breaking and both may be useable in theory. Such engaging mechanisms are known in practice. Other embodiments may have different engaging mechanisms.

[0115] In some embodiments, the inner wall surface of the mixing chamber and or connector comprises a sloping or angled portion for example adjacent, or near, to the second inlet port configured that nebulised substance that condenses on the inner wall surface of the mixing chamber and or connector may flow back into the engaged nebuliser. Advantageously this may reduce waste of the nebulised substance.

[0116] In some embodiments, the engaging mechanism of the first inlet port to engage a nebuliser comprises a friction-fit mechanism. The friction-fit mechanism may comprise corresponding mating parts for example male and female parts that are configured to releasably engage. In come embodiments the friction-fit mechanism comprises corresponding one or more ridges and grooves, for example, circumferential grooves and ridges on one or more or both of the mating surfaces of an engaging nebuliser and the connector of the present invention. In some embodiments, the connector comprises the male or smaller fitting corresponding mating part of the friction-fit mechanism configured to mate and releasable engage with a corresponding female or larger friction-fit mechanism part of a friction-fit mechanism. Advantageously, this aids that condensed nebulised substances from the mixing chamber 12 may flow back into an or the engaged nebuliser 14. Figure 8 shows and embodiment showing a cross-sectional view where the smaller (male) friction-fit mechanism part is within the larger corresponding (female) friction-fit mechanism part thus enabling liquid within the mixing chamber to flow back into the nebuliser reducing waste.

[0117] In some embodiments, the engaging mechanism to engage a nebuliser and or Venturi device to the connector comprises a snap fit or other mechanical type engaging mechanism.

[0118] In some embodiments, the engaging mechanism to engage a nebuliser and or Venturi device to the connector comprises an interference fit or other mechanical type engaging mechanism. Advantageously, the connector provides an easy connection for the mixed fluids from a nebuliser and oxygen from a Venturi device to be supplied to a user via a face mask or fluid delivery system, for example, nasal tubing. In some embodiments, the exit port is configured that it may function both to at least partially house an engaging Venturi device as well as simultaneously connect to a face mask or fluid delivery means like nasal tubing; or may function solely to connect to a face mask or fluid delivery means.

[0119] In some embodiments, the exit port comprises an engagement mechanism to connect to a fluid delivery face mask or fluid delivery system.

[0120] In some embodiments, the engagement mechanism comprises screw-threads that are configured to correspond to screw-threads of a Venturi device.

[0121] In some embodiments, the connector is configured that the second inlet port and the exit port are configured to releasably engage to standard sized fixed rate medical Venturi devices. The industry has current standard sizes of nebulisers and venturi devices so that these may be used interchangeable with other standard sized equipment. This does not exclude ranges and different designs, and does not exclude changes to the standard sizes. For example, currently, although not limited to, it is common that for both air for driving a nebuliser, and oxygen input for the Venturi devices may be connected to 8 millimetres outer diameter (5 millimetres inner diameter) tubing. Currently, but not limited to, this tubing often has a silicone type connector on each end that is an oversized female aperture. Commonly but not limiting to, the air I oxygen outlets and equivalent inlets on the nebuliser and Venturi devices respectively use either a tapered or barbed male connector to secure the Pipe.

[0122] Currently the typical connecting of standard air I oxygen tubing from an oxygen source to a nebuliser or Venturi device is by a male / female frictional fit connecting mechanism where the air / oxygen tubing and the nebuliser and / or Venturi device would have a corresponding configured mating portion or mechanism. Often the male portion would on the nebuliser or Venturi device and the gas or oxygen / air tube connectable to a gas source, for example, an oxygen source, would comprise the larger female corresponding mating part to fit over the corresponding mating part / portion on the nebuliser and / or Venturi device. Examples of these include Luer- Lok type mechanisms. The tubing is often plastic or silicone, strong but flexible.

[0123] In some embodiments, of the present invention the connector comprises a bayonet type connecting mechanism, or partial bayonet connecting mechanism configured to mate with corresponding configured bayonet or partial bayonet mechanisms on a tubing, for example a gas tubing configured to allow passage of gas, to allow engagement of a gas tube to the connector, for example to the or an inlet port of the connector. Bayonet connection means may offer a more secure fitting over a frictional fit and may give a user more confidence of a full safe engagement when fitted.

[0124] In some embodiments, the connector comprises corresponding frictional fit mating mechanisms, that are configured to mate frictionally with corresponding mating surfaces of tubing, for example gas tubing configured to allow passage of gas within the tubing. The tubing may comprise plastic or silicone, for example for the tubing walls.

[0125] In some embodiments, of the present invention the inlet gas or air / oxygen tubing is integral with the connector. In some embodiments, the connector comprises gas or air / oxygen tubing, integrally part of the connector, wherein the gas or oxygen I air tubing, is configured to be connected to a gas source. In some embodiments, the connector comprises gas or air / oxygen tubing, integrally part of the connector, wherein the gas or oxygen I air tubing, is configured at its distal end, to be connected to a gas source. In some embodiments, the connector comprises integrally connected gas or air / oxygen tubing that is configured to be connected to a gas source, and wherein the said subbing is in fluid communication with an engaged Venturi device or a Venturi device mechanism that is integrally part of the connector. The advantage of an integrally formed gas tubing, for example an inlet gas or oxygen I air tubing integral to the connector, is that it reduces risk of a user making an incorrect fitting. It is unfortunately too common, in practice, that the wrong tube is connected to the wrong device. Similarly, another too frequent problem is not making a proper full engagement that there are gas leaks or the connection breaks and the tubing separated from the device, for example separates from the nebuliser or Venturi device. Such mistakes can have serious consequences for a patient. In some embodiments, the gas or oxygen I air inlet is at the lateral side of the connector, when orientated with the longitudinal axis vertically. In some embodiments, the connector comprises an inlet port that protrudes from the connector. In some embodiments, the connector comprises an inlet port that protrudes from the lateral side of the connector when the connector is orientated with its longitudinal axis vertically. In some embodiments, the connector comprises gas communication means to allow gas communication between an inlet port, for example a gas inlet port of the connector, and an engaged Venturi device, or a Venturi type device portion of the connector. In some embodiments, the connector comprises a lumen or tubing configured to enable gas communication between an inlet port, for example a gas inlet port of the connector, and an engaged Venturi device, or a Venturi type device portion of the connector. In some embodiments, the lumen or tubing is L-shaped, in at least a portion the lumen or tubing. In some embodiments, the second inlet port comprises an L-shaped lumen. In some embodiments, a portion of the L-shaped lumen, or L shaped second inlet port, or L- shaped tubing of a second inlet port is in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the connector. In some embodiments, a portion of the L-shaped lumen, or L shaped second inlet port, or L-shaped tubing of a second inlet port is in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the connector. The alignment of at least a portion of the second inlet port with the exit port and or Venturi device or Venturi portion, and or an engaged nebuliser or nebuliser portion may allow improved flow of fluid through the connector. In some embodiments, the portion of the L-shaped lumen, or L shaped second inlet port, or L-shaped tubing of a second inlet port that is in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the connector, is positioned between the exit port and first inlet port.

[0126] In some embodiments, the walls of the L-shaped lumen or tubing or secondary inlet port comprises plastic. In some embodiments, the walls of the L-shaped lumen or tubing or second inlet port is solid, in some other embodiments, the walls of L- shaped lumen or tubing or second inlet port may be flexible.

[0127] In some embodiments, a portion of the second inlet port protrudes laterally from the connector, laterally from the longitudinal axis of the connector. Some known standard Venturi devices that may be used with the present invention (but not limited to only these devices) and that have standard connection sizes used in the industry to readily connect to other equipment likely to be needed for example oxygen and breathing air sources and facemasks and nasal tubing include the colour coded Venturi devices from Intersurgical Inc, as listed below in table 1.

[0128] Table 1

[0129] Typically these Venturi devices may have an outer diameter of 6 millimetres to 6.5 millimetres tapered surface over a 15 millimetres length with a straight non-tapered length with for a larger out diameter of for example around 20.6 millimetres and maybe an outer section (opposite of the oxygen connecting end) of an even greater outer diameter maybe of, for example 26, millimetre, and an inner diameter of for example around 21.9 millimetres. In practice in some situations the face mask may have a corresponding mating connection that fits within this top section of the Venturi device.

[0130] Other known Venturi devices that may be suitable for use with the present invention include variable Venturi devices for example Silente (Trade Mark of Intersurgical Inc.), Multi Ox (Trade Mark of Intersurgical Inc.) and Dual (Trade Mark of Intersurgical Inc.) Venturi devices. Variable Venturi devices may enable different fix or constant rate of oxygen delivery, which may be selected by a user for example by further opening or closing air vents of the variable Venturi Device or supplying different flow rates of oxygen or breathe gas into the variable Venturi device. Advantageously variable Venturi devices may allow one device to be fitted that can supply more than one fixed rate of oxygen when selected.

[0131] The specific examples of Venturi devices and nebulisers and tubing given herein are to assist in the understanding of the invention but not to be in any limiting sense and in other embodiments other types of nebulisers and Venturi devices may be used with conduits and gas sources as known to the person skilled in the art.

[0132] In some embodiments, of the connector of the present invention may hold, or releasably engage a Venturi device while still allowing a face mask or nasal tubing to releasably engage with the Venturi device when the Venturi device is releasably engaged with the connector of the present invention.

[0133] In some embodiments, the connector is configured that the first inlet port is configured to releasably engage to standard sized nebulisers.

[0134] Known nebulisers, that may be used with the connector of the present invention include but not limited to the Cirrus II (Trade Mark of Intersurgical Inc) range.

[0135] In some embodiments, the connector comprises a Venturi portion, wherein the Venturi portion is configured to enable delivery of a fixed rate of oxygen when connected to an oxygen and air supply. In some embodiments, the connector comprises a Venturi portion integrally attached with the connector wherein the Venturi portion is configured to enable delivery of a fixed rate of oxygen, when connected to an oxygen and air supply. In some embodiments, the connector and Venturi portion is integrally manufactured from plastic. Thus in some embodiments, the Venturi device is part of the connector and thus can be fitted with a nebuliser or in some embodiments, there will also be a nebuliser portion too, integral with the connector. This may have the advantage of a one-piece manufacturing process. The size of the Venturi portion or the air vents of the Venturi portion may be manufactured at different sizes as desired to reflect the required fixed rate of oxygen required to be delivered. In some embodiments, the connector comprises a nebuliser portion, wherein the nebuliser portion is configured to enable delivery of a fluid when connected to an air supply and loaded with a liquid for dispensing. In some embodiments, the connector comprises a Venturi portion integrally attached with the connector wherein the nebuliser portion is configured to enable delivery of a fluid when connected to an air supply and loaded with a liquid for dispensing. In some embodiments, the connector and nebuliser portion are integrally manufactured from plastic. Thus, in some embodiments, the nebuliser portion / device is part of the connector and thus can be fitted with a Venturi device or in some embodiments, there will also be a Venturi portion too integral with the connector. This may have the advantage of a one-piece manufacturing process. The size of the nebuliser portion or the air vents and liquid store of the nebuliser portion may be manufactured at different sizes as desired to reflect the required delivery fixed rate of fluid or medication required to be delivered.

[0136] In some embodiments, the Venturi portion of the connector is configured to receive Oxygen at a variety of different specific rates in-order-to entrain a specific flow of air mixed with nebulised solution. For example, but by no means limiting in some embodiments, the Venturi portion is configured to receive Oxygen at a rate of 4 to 6, 6 to 8, 8 to 10, 10 to 12 or 12 to 15 litres of oxygen per minute in-order-to entrain a specific flow of air mixed with nebulised solution. In some system embodiments the Venturi portion is configured to enable oxygen delivery at a rate of 24 percent (%) or 28% or 31 % or 35 % or 40 % or 60 % oxygen.

[0137] In some embodiments, the connector comprises an air inlet. In some embodiments, the air inlet is configured to enable air flow into the chamber of the connector. In some embodiments, the air inlet is configured to selectively enable air flow into the chamber of the connector. In some embodiments, the air inlet is configured to be resealable such that in some configurations it is airtight and in other configurations air may pass into the mixing chamber of the connector. It is foreseen that in embodiments with an air inlet, an aperture in the wall of the connector, that air may flow into the mixing chamber of the connector. In embodiments where it is not desired to have air flow out of the mixing chamber of the connector the air inlet may be selectively openable or closable. In some embodiments, the selectively openable or closable means may comprise a valve. In some embodiments, the valve may comprise of any of, or combination of: flap valve, stop-check valve, umbrella valve, diaphragm valve, duckbill valve, split valve, hinge valves, swing valves, flapper valves, and Tesla valves.

[0138] In some embodiments, the air inlet is completely open. In some embodiments, the air inlet comprises slots, mesh, vents. Thus, in some embodiments, the air inlet may comprise a plurality of openings. In some embodiments, the air inlet comprises a controlled air duct, a controlled opening and closing mechanism. The term “air inlet” may include the plural “air inlets” and may comprise a plurality of air inlets.

[0139] In some embodiments, the mixing chamber comprises a pressure relief valve. In some embodiments, the mixing chamber comprises one or more pressure relief valves.

[0140] In some embodiments, the air inlet comprises a pressure relief valve. In some embodiments, the air inlet comprises one or more pressure relief valves. The valves may be used and configured to control the flow of air into and out of the mixing chamber of the connector. In some embodiments, a valve may be configured to prevent air flow out of the mixing chamber of the connector. In some embodiments, the valve may be configured to restrict partially of fully as required, the flow of air into or out of the mixing chamber of the connector. Ideally embodiments of the present invention will have enough airflow not to restrict air flow to a user but restricted enough that a significant amount, greater than 50 percent (%), or all of the nebulised substance is consumed by the Venturi device to deliver to a user.

[0141] In some embodiments, the pressure relief valve comprises an umbrella valve or a flap valve, or both an umbrella valve and a flap valve. In some embodiments, the valve may comprise of any one or more of, or combination of: flap valve, stop-check valve, umbrella valve, diaphragm valve, duckbill valve, split valve, hinge valves, swing valves, flapper valves, and Tesla valves. This is not an exhaustive list, and other embodiments comprise one or more of other types of valves. In some embodiments, the mixing chamber is configured that when a Venturi device is engaged with the connector, that air or fluid that is entrained into the Venturi device, for delivery to a user, for example a patient, that the said air or fluid entrained, is from the mixing chamber, or from an engaged nebuliser or from both the mixing chamber and an engaged nebuliser.

[0142] In some embodiments, the mixing chamber is configured that the air or fluid mixing with the oxygen and fluid from an oxygen source to form an oxygen, air, fluid mix fluid comprises air or fluid, or both air and fluid from the mixing chamber or from an attached nebuliser.

[0143] The difficulty however may be that the flow rates of the or any nebuliser and Venturi device used may not be the same and thus cause issues. If the flow rate is hindered and too low, there may be restricted flow for the user and not good mixing of the oxygen from the Venturi device and the gas or liquid vapour or medicament from the nebuliser. If too much of a flow rate, then substances from the nebuliser or the oxygen from the Venturi device may be too diluted than what is required for the user. The present invention seeks to address these issues.

In some embodiments, the pressure release valve may comprise of any of, or combination of: flap valve, stop-check valve, umbrella valve, diaphragm valve, duckbill valve, split valve, hinge valves, swing valves, flapper valves and Tesla valve.

[0160] In some embodiments, the pressure relief valve is a one-way valve configured to allow fluid into the mixing chamber. For example, air. Having a pressure release valve able to allow air into the mixing chamber is a helpful comfort and or safety feature that should a user inhale a large volume of fluid, for example an air mix, that the volume or speed of inhaling is larger or faster than the mixing chamber with any engaged Venturi device or nebuliser can normally deliver to a user than air can be brought into the mixing chamber and delivered to a user and not discomfort or stress the user. Ideally in essence some embodiments of the present invention will allow the connector with an engaged Venturi device and or engaged nebuliser to breathe normally meaning to give or deliver the desired rated oxygen levels and nebulised substance to a user. As mentioned above having a controlled amount of air enter the mixing chamber may also help flow of the gases and substances through the connector and maybe to ensure that the correct amount of fixed rate oxygen or breathe air and correct amount of nebulised substance exits the connector and is conveyed to a user.

[0162] In some embodiments, the pressure relief valve is a one-way valve configured to allow air into the mixing chamber from outside of the mixing chamber or outside of the connector when the fluid pressure within mixing chamber is below the external pressure by a pre-determined amount.

[0163] In some embodiments, the pressure relief valve is a one-way valve configured to allow air into the mixing chamber from outside of the mixing chamber or outside of the connector, when the fluid pressure within mixing chamber is below the external pressure by a pre-determined amount, for example 5 % or 10 % below in pressure.

[0164] In some embodiments, the pressure release valves will open when the pressure difference across it is of 5 or 10 percent greater or more.

The connector is configured such that air vents of the Venturi device are open to the mixing chamber of the connector thus the draw of an engaged Venturi device will naturally draw the gas, air or substances from the nebuliser, and air inlet if present and open. This can be achieved due to the volume of the mixing chamber of the connector. In some embodiments, there comprises a flow control device to direct nebulised gas, vapour or substances to the Venturi device. [0213] In another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for supplying a fixed rate of oxygen and a medicament comprising using a connector, face mask, system or method as described herein.

[0214] To help describe the invention and how it is used, a non-limiting embodiment will be described in use. In this embodiment a Venturi device not yet connected to oxygen air source is engaged with the connector by inserting the Venturi device into the exit port of the connector with the oxygen connection portion end first (of the Venturi device) into the exit port until the Venturi device is engaged with the connector. Different embodiments may have different means and mechanisms to releasably engage / secure the Venturi device with the connector. In some embodiments, these may be by a friction fit. In some embodiments, this may be by one or more flanges on the inner wall surface of the exit port that the Venturi device may sit on. In some embodiments, a portion of the Venturi device will abut on an inner wall surface of the connector, for example a flange. In some embodiments, the releasable engagement of the Venturi device with the connector will be an airtight seal such that substantially gas cannot escape from the mixing chamber around an engaged Venturi device. In some embodiments, the exit port and or the second inlet port of the connector may have valves, for example silicone split, valves or oversized split valves or the like that substantially prevent gas passing through the exit port and or second inlet port when no Venturi device is engaged but also seal around any engaged Venturi device. Once releasably engaged the Venturi device would be connected to an oxygen source which may be via a conduit connected to the oxygen connecting portion of the Venturi device which will protrude from the connector via the second inlet port. Likewise in practice a nebuliser will be releasably engaged with the connector via the first inlet port. In some embodiments, this may be via a clip, or clip mechanism where corresponding mating surfaces (so configured) of the connector around the second inlet port and the exit port of the nebuliser may be pushed together to releasably engage. In some embodiments, there may be a friction-fit engaging mechanism and it is foreseen that in some of these friction-fit embodiments that the joining or pushing force overcomes structural resistant, of the connector or nebuliser or both, but that once the resistance force is overcome the nebuliser is securely, but releasably held. In some embodiments, this will also be held or engaged in an airtight fashion that substantially gas is prevented from passing in or out of the mixing chamber around the nebuliser. Thus, gas enters the mixing chamber of the connector via the nebuliser and or via the Venturi device, and in some embodiments, maybe via air inlets of the connector. In practice the nebuliser will comprise, or be loaded with the medicament or substance to be nebulised, when the gas supply is running to the nebuliser, nebulised substances will enter the mixing chamber of the connector. When the oxygen supply is fitted and running to the Venturi device this will entrain (draw in) nebulised substances, and gas in the mixing chamber into the flow of the oxygen air mix of the Venturi device that then can exit vi the nebuliser and exit port of the connector, to a face mask or nasal tubing or the like to a user. Some embodiments of the connector may have one or more air inlets to allow air from outside of the connector to enter the mixing chamber of the connector. This air flow may enable a better or improved flow of gas and nebulised substance into the entrained mix of gas and nebulised substances. In some embodiments, that comprise air inlets these may further comprise valves that may for example be oneway valves to only allow gas and other substances into the mixing chamber. The air inlets may allow a better flow, to ensure enough air or gas is entrained into the running Venturi device when engaged with the connector. In some embodiments, the first inlet port may also comprise a valve that when a nebuliser is not fitted the valve substantially prevents gas entering the mixing chamber. In embodiments with various valves at the exit port, the first inlet port and the second inlet port enable the connector to act as a nebuliser only, a Venturi device only or both a nebuliser and Venturi device.

[0215] In some embodiments, the connector comprises a heating mechanism. It is foreseen that the nebuliser and or Venturi device may be supplied with heated or temperature- controlled gas, oxygen or breathing air and thus a separate heating mechanism for the connector may not be required. However, in some embodiments, the connector comprises a heating mechanism to warm the connector and or mixing chamber to reduce condensation on the inner wall surface of the connector and or mixing chamber of the connector.

Therefore a Venturi device, as a person skilled in the art would understand, will be configured to receive a first fluid supply, like for example, an oxygen gas mix, and that the Venturi device will comprise openings or vents that allow air or another second fluid to be entrained with the first fluid supply, that the second fluid will pass through apertures, vents or openings of the Venturi device or portion to mix with the first fluid. A person skilled in the art will understand that the Venturi device is configured to deliver a constant concentration of oxygen but that this is not a precise concentration but exact enough for purpose. In the art these items are also known as “Venturi valves”, or at least the part with air vents is known as “Venturi valves” but for ease of describing herein the “Venturi device” is used to include in meaning the “Venturi valves”. The term also includes variable Venturi devices which may be selected to deliver different fixed or constant concentration rates of oxygen as required. A person skilled in the art would understand that the fixed oxygen delivery is possible from a known fluid supply rate, for example from an oxygen mix source used with a known sized entrainment port.

[0276] Figure 1a and 1b show partial side views of an upper portion of an example connector 1 of the present invention. Figure 1a shows a pressure relief valve 3. In this example the pressure relief valve 3 comprises an umbrella valve. Also shown is an exit port 4 with an engaged Venturi device 5 sitting in the exit port 4. Figure 1b shows the opposite side view of the connector 1 , to that shown in Figure 1a and shows the second inlet port 6 with a valve 7, in this example the valve 7 is a silicone split vale and also shown is a protruding portion 8 of an engaged Venturi device 5. In the example the connector 1 comprises plastic.

[0277] Figure 2a and 2b show partially cut away views of the example of connector 1 described in Figures 1a and 1b, but without a Venturi device 5. Also shown is the open exit port 4 with inner walls 9 forming a channel 10. The inner walls 9 of the exit port 4 comprise an inner facing flange 11, wherein the diameter of the channel 10 across the flange 11 is smaller in diameter than the diameter of the channel 10 at the outer portion of the exit port 4. An engaged Venturi device may abut against the flange 11 when engaged with the exit port. The Figure 2a figure shows that the second inlet port 6 is axially aligned with the exit port 4 to aid easy engagement of a Venturi device. The mixing chamber 12 is also shown. Figure 2b shows a different cut away view to Figure 2a but also shows the mixing chamber 12, the exit port 4, side walls 9 of the exit port 4, forming the channel 10 and with the flange 11. Also shown is the second inlet port 6 with valve 3 shown fitted, and the pressure relief valve 3.

[0278] Figure 3a and 3b show partially cut away views of the connector 1 shown in figures 1a, 1b 2a and 2b but with a Venturi device 5 in engagement with the connector 1. Figure 3a shows the open vents 13 of an engaged Venturi device 5, 8 where the vents are open and in fluid communication with the mixing chamber 12. Also shown is a pressure relief valve 3 the protruding portion 8 of a Venturi device 5 with inlet 15 for oxygen. The engaged Venturi device 5 can be see abutted against the flange 11 inside the channel 10 of the exit port 4. The engaging of the Venturi device 5 forms a fluid seal between the Venturi device 5 and the inner walls 9 and or flange 11, preventing fluids entering or exiting the mixing chamber 12 between the Venturi device 5 and the inner walls 9 and or flange 11 of the exit port 4. In addition. Figure 3b shows and engaged nebuliser 14 engaged with the fist inlet port 2.

[0279] Figures 4a and 4b show valves, Figure 4a shows a pressure relief valve and in particular an Umbrella valve while Figure 4b shows a split valve and in particular a silicone split valve.

[0280] Figure 5 shows a partial cross sectional delivery facemask 100 embodiment of the present invention on a user 200. Shown is a Venturi device 5, nebuliser 14 and mixing chamber 12. The protruding portion 8 of the Venturi device 5 is attached via a conduit 300 to an oxygen source, (not shown). The protruding portion 8 of the Venturi device in this embodiment protrudes through the second inlet port 6.

[0281] Figure 6 shows some examples of current Venturi device that are suitable for use with the present invention. The Venturi devices shown in Figure 6 are not foreseen to be the only Venturi devices capable to be used with the present invention. The Venturi devices shown in Figure 6 are to assist in the understanding of the present invention. A person skilled in the art will recognise these to be “standard” Venturi devices in the sense that the attachments portions are of a “standard” size to be able to easily fit other “standard” sized equipment for example conduits and oxygen sources, although the present invention need not necessarily be limited to “standard” sizes only. These Venturi devices are from a product range from Intersurgical Inc. however is different embodiments other Venturi devices may be used. Figure 6 shows starting from the bottom a blue B, white W, orange O, yellow Y, red R, and green G, Venturi devices, each having different air vent sizing that when given a recommended oxygen flow rate deliver a fixed rate of oxygen. In practice when in use, the recommended oxygen flow rate enables oxygen to enter the oxygen connecting portion 8 (which in other drawings is referred to as the protruding portion 8 of the Venturi device, then air or gas is entrained through the air I open vents 13 to exit at the opposite end of the Venturi device to the oxygen source connecting portion 8 or “protruding end” 8. Often the Venturi devices are marked 16 with the recommended oxygen flow rate and subsequent fixed oxygen amount. It can be that the Venturi device will give a different fixed rate oxygen delivery when a different recommended flow rate of oxygen is applied.

[0282] Figure 7a and 7b shows example connectors 1 of the present invention with Venturi devices 5 and nebulisers 14. Figure 7a has a white W Venturi device 5 almost completely engaged into the connector 1. The Venturi device, of this example, is manufacture and supplied from Intersurgical Inc. The protruding portion 8 or oxygen connecting portion 8 is just visible in the figure 7a. In other embodiments other types of Venturi devices 5 may be used and the invention is not intended necessarily to be limited to particular Venturi devices 5. In this embodiment there is shown three air inlets 18, which will allow air to flow to the mixing chamber 12. These may, but not necessarily, be fitted with valves of various types, to for example, allow air flow only one way, for example into the mixing chamber from outside of the connector 1. In practice the Venturi device is not initially connected to the oxygen source via the oxygen connection portion 8, but is placed in the connector first via the exit port 4 of the connector with the oxygen connecting portion 8 (of the Venturi device 5) first. The Venturi device 5 is placed through the exit port 4 (of the connector) until the oxygen connecting portion 8 protrudes through the second inlet port 6 (of the connector 1) and protrudes through the connector 1 and abuts on inner walls of the connector 1 such that the connector 1 can hold the Venturi device 5. In some embodiments, this inner wall of the connector 1 that abuts an engaged Venturi device 5 may comprise a flange, or comprise one or more flanges that are configured to abut against an engaged or engaging Venturi device 5. Also, in this embodiment of Figure 7a can be seen is nebuliser 14 that is engaged with the connector 1. In this embodiment the nebuliser 14 is engaged with the connector by a friction-fit engaging mechanism. In this embodiment the connector comprises plastic. In this embodiment the connector 1 is manufactured of plastic which give the structure strength and rigidity. In this embodiment the engaging mechanism is a friction-fit type that a nebuliser 14 can be engaged to the connector 1 by a push action that overcomes a certain amount of frictional force but once push passed this resistance, releasably holds the nebuliser firmly engaged with the connector 1. To release the nebuliser 14 from the connector 1 may happen by a pull or separating force, by a user, to separate an engaged nebuliser 14 from the connector 1. Again, in practice with this embodiment, the pull or separating force may overcome some resistance force before separating but both the connector 1 and nebuliser 14 would be configured and manufacture to be strong enough to maybe flex in shape enough to allow the engaging and disengaging of the two parts without breaking and both would be useable in theory. Such engaging mechanisms are known in practice. Other embodiments may have different engaging mechanisms. In this embodiment a Cirrus II (trademark of Intersurgical Inc.) nebuliser 14 was used for engaging to the connector 1 but other embodiments may be used with other nebulisers 14. Also shown in this Figure 7a embodiment is the nebuliser 14 engaged to the connector 1 at the first inlet port 17.

[0283] Figure 7b shows a Red R Venturi device 5 engaged with a connector 1 of the present invention as can be seen the oxygen source connecting portion 8 protrudes through the second inlet port 6 of the connector 1. This embodiment of the connector 1 also has air inlet 18. In this embodiment there is shown three air inlets 18. Again, the air inlets may be fitted with valves, but not necessarily. Different embodiments, that have air inlets may have a different number, and size of air inlets. In this embodiment a nebuliser from Clement Clark International was used for engaging to the connector 1 but other embodiments may be used with other nebulisers.

[0284] Figure 8 shows a cut away cross section view of an embodiment of a connector 1 of the present invention. As can be see there are three air inlets 18, which may allow air into the mixing chamber and which may, but not necessarily, be fitted with valves (not shown), that may enable air to flow into the mixing chamber 12 only not out, but other valves may function differently if fitted. Also show is the exit port 4 that in this embodiment comprises two flanges 11 to help seat and hold an engaging Venturi device 5, that in practice would be inserted into the exit port 4 until seated on the two flanges 11 and the oxygen connection portion 8 of the engaging Venturi device 5, protrudes the second inlet port 6 and a portion of the Venturi device 5 abuts on the inner wall 9 of the connector 1 at portion 20. As can be seen in Figure 8, in this embodiment the second inlet port and the exit port are axially aligned and configured such that the second inlet port and exit port may releasably engage different portions of an engaged Venturi device. It is foreseen that the connector would be configured, sized and shaped to enable such engagement with a Venturi device 5. Also seen is a partial view of an engaged Nebuliser 14. The Nebuliser 14 in this embodiment is engaged by a friction— fit mechanism 21. In practice the Nebuliser 14 to be engaged with the connector 1 with such a friction-fit mechanism 21 could be push towards the connector with the corresponding matching fittings or mechanism in contact until the friction resistance is outcome and the nebuliser 14 is securely but releasably engaged with the connector 1. To remove the nebuliser 14 a pull action strong enough to overcome the frictional resistance will release the nebuliser 14 from the connector 1. Other embodiments may have different connecting means to engage the Venturi device 5 or nebuliser 14. For completeness the out surface 19 of the connector 1 is shown. As shown in figure 8 the inner wall surface 9 has a sloping or angled portion near the second inlet port that nebulised substance that condenses on the inner wall surface 9 of the mixing chamber 12 and or connector 1 may flow back into the engaged nebuliser 14. As shown in the friction-fit mechanism 21 of engaging the engaged nebuliser 14 to the connector 1, the connector comprises the male or smaller diameter clip corresponding mating clip mechanism 21 and the nebuliser comprises the female or larger corresponding mating mechanism 21 configured such that condensed nebulised substances from the mixing chamber 12 may flow into the engaged nebuliser 14. Other embodiments may have different engaging means and mechanisms.

[0285] Figure 9 is similar to Figure 8 but in addition shows an engaged Venturi device 5. As can be seen the engaged Venturi device 5 (engaged with the connector 1) abuts the flanges 11 and on the inner wall surface 9 of the connector 1. As can be seen in Figure 9, in this embodiment the second inlet port and the exit port are axially aligned and configured such that the second inlet port and exit port may releasably engage different portions of an engaged Venturi device. As can be seen the Venturi device has air vents 55 that are open and unobscured within the mixing chamber 12, such that gas, air, suspended particles, nebulised substances and the like, within the mixing chamber 12 are free to enter the air vents 55 of the engaged Venturi device 5. In practice when a gas supply is supplied to an engaged nebuliser 14 engaged to the connector 1, and an oxygen or breathing gas supplied to the oxygen supply connecting portion 8 of an engaged Venturi device 5, nebulised substances will be in the mixing chamber and can be entrained by the flow of oxygen gas mix from the oxygen supply into the engaged Venturi device 5 via the air vents 55 of the engaged Venturi device 5 and exit through the Venturi device 5 and the exit port 4, in a gas oxygen nebulised substance mix. The air inlets 18 may allow a better flow, to ensure enough air or gas is entrained into the running Venturi device 5 when engaged with the connector 1.

[0286] Figure 10 is a cut away exploded view an embodiment of the connector 1 with an engaged Venturi device 5. As can be seen in Figure 10, in this embodiment the second inlet port and the exit port are axially aligned and configured such that the second inlet port and exit port may releasably engage different portions of an engaged Venturi device. As can be seen the oxygen source connecting portion 8 of the engaged Venturi device protrudes from the connector 1 , and can be fitted to a conduit or the like to connect to an oxygen or breathing air mix supply source. As can be seen the air vents 55 are open within the mixing chamber (not blocked) such that gas, air nebulised substance and the like within the mixing chamber 12 can flow into the engaged Venturi device. In this embodiment at least one portion of the engaged Venturi device 5 abuts a portion of the connector 1 when releasably engaged with the connector 1. Also shown in this embodiment are air inlets 18, that may assist flow of gas, air nebulised substances and the like into the engaged Venturi device 5, and thus exit the connector 1 and Venturi device 5 to a user via a facemask or nasal tubes or the like. Advantageously the connector of the present invention may enable a good flow of the nebulised substance into the oxygen air mix for a user.

[0287] Figure 11 is a cut away cross-sectional view of an embodiment of the connector 1. In this embodiment when in use and a Venturi device 5 is engaged by the exit port 4 and second inlet port 6 of the connector 1, the longitudinal axis of the Venturi device 5 or the longitudinal aligned axis of the exit port 4 and second inlet port 6 is at an angle A, about 35 degrees, to the horizontal plane H. This angled orientation of the Venturi device 5 enables a good flow of any nebulised substances from the nebuliser 14 (when engaged) to be entrained into the oxygen or breathe air supply of the Venturi device 5. Additionally, this angled orientation with angled lower inner wall of the connector 1 may enable any nebulised substance that condenses on the inner wall of the connector 1 or mixing chamber 12 of the connector 1 , to flow back into an engaged nebuliser 14. Additionally, the connector 1 comprises a friction-fit engagement mechanism wherein the male, or smaller, or inner mating corresponding portion, to mate with a corresponding larger or outer or female portion on a nebuliser 14 when a corresponding nebuliser is engaged. This engagement configuration also assists in returning condensed nebulised substances to an engaged nebuliser.

[0288] Figure 12 is a cut away side view of an embodiment of the connector 1. In this Figure 12 embodiment the connector 1 has a longitudinal axis X, and the exit port 4 and the first inlet port 17 are aligned along the longitudinal axis X of the connector. The second inlet port 6 has a lateral opening 6 generally between the first inlet port 17 and the exit port 4. The second inlet port 6 comprises an L-shaped lumen 66 and is in fluid communication with an engaged Venturi device 5, via the L-shaped lumen 66. In this embodiment, the walls of L-shaped lumen comprise plastic and are solid, in other embodiments the walls of L-shaped lumen may be flexible. At least a portion 66a of the L-shaped lumen is in alignment with an engaged Venturi device 5, and a portion 66b of the L-shaped conduit protrudes laterally from the conduit, such that an engaged Venturi device 5 may engage with the L-shaped lumen 66 of the second inlet port 6 with fluid communication such that a fluid, for example an oxygen mix, that enters the second inlet port 6, may travel along the L-shaped lumen to an engaged Venturi device 5. In this embodiment, at least a portion of the lumen 66 of the second inlet port 6 is in alignment with the longitudinal axis of an engaged Venturi device 5 and the longitudinal axis X of the connector 1. A Venturi device 5 is shown engaged with the connector 1 via the exit port 4. Also shown in this embodiment are the vents, openings or apertures 13 of an engaged Venturi device 5. A Nebuliser 14 is shown engaged with the connector 1 via the first inlet port 17. The connector 1 also comprises at least open opening, aperture or vent 18 through the wall 9 of the connector 1 to allow air to enter the mixing chamber 12. In practice for this embodiment, once a loaded nebuliser 14 is engaged with the connector 1 via the first inlet port 17 and a Venturi device is engaged with the exit port 4 of the connector, these engagements may be by frictional connection but in other embodiments other types of engagement may be suitable, fluid sources are fluidly connected to the first 17 and second 6 inlet ports such that fluid may be delivered to the connector via the nebuliser 14 and the mixing chamber 12. Substances loaded onto the nebuliser 14 may become suspended in the fluid entering the first inlet port 17 and travel upwards within the mixing chamber 12, where air entering the openings 18 of the connector, mixes with the fluid and suspended substances within the mixing chamber 12 and is entrained through the Venturi device openings 13, within the mixing chamber 12 to exit the connector via exit port 4 and the engaged Venturi device 5. The Venturi device may be connected to a face mask of nasal tubing to deliver an oxygen ait and nebulised substance mix to a patient. Different Venturi devices 5 may be used with different opening 13 sizes depending on the fixed rate of oxygen to be delivered. In other embodiments the Venturi device 5 or the Nebuliser 14 or both the Venturi Device 5 and Nebuliser 14 may be a portion of the connector 1 instead of separate separatable items as shown in this Figure 12 embodiment.

[0289] Figure 13 shows another embodiment of the connector 1. This Figure 13 embodiment also has an engaged Venturi device 5 with vents / openings / apertures 13. The engaged Venturi device 5 is engaged through the exit port 4. A nebuliser 14 is engaged with the connector 1 via the first inlet port 17. The connector 1 comprises a mixing chamber 12. The engaged Venturi device 5 is in fluid communication with an oxygen fluid source (not show) via the second inlet port 6 comprising an L-shaped lumen 66 (and 66a and 66b). In this embodiment, the vents 18 of the engaged Venturi device 5 are outside of the mixing chamber 12. In this Figure 13 embodiment, the vents 13 of the Venturi device are positioned just above or outside of the exit port 4, and are also effectively the entrainment ports 18 in other embodiments. The exit port 4 in this embodiment is configured to receive a Venturi device 5 that it is partially housed by the exit port 4 but that the vents 13 of the engaged Venturi device 5 are outside of the connector 1. Fluid may enter the engaged Venturi device 5 via the second inlet port 6 and from an engaged nebuliser 14 via other parts of the mixing chamber 12, shown by the arrow 12a. In practice with this embodiments, once a loaded nebuliser 14 is engaged to the connector 1 via the first inlet port 17 and a Venturi device 5 is also engaged to the connector 1 via the exit port 4, such that there is fluid communications from the oxygen or fluid sources (not shown) to the engaged nebuliser 14 and Venturi devices 5 (or via the mixing chamber 12 to the Venturi device 5), substances loaded onto the nebuliser 14 may be suspended in the fluid from a fluid source entering the nebuliser 14 and first inlet port 17, and travel upwards, for example, along the direction of arrow 12a, through the vents 13 to the engaged Venturi device, and will mix with entrained air drawn into the Venturi device partially housed by the connector 1 , through the vents 13, before exiting the connector and Venturi device. The Venturi device may be connected to a face mask or nasal tubing to deliver nebulised substances and a fixed rate of oxygen as required. Different Venturi devices 5 may be engaged with the connector 1 to deliver different rates of oxygen as required. In other embodiments the Venturi device 5 or the nebuliser 14, or both, may be, for example integral, portions of the connector 1 instead of separate separable items as described in this embodiment.

[0290] Figures 14a and 14b show side views of an embodiment of the connector 1. As can be seen there is an opening, or entrainment port 18 in the wall 9 of the connector 1. In this embodiment the connector 1 comprises a venturi portion 5 that is integral with the connector 1. However, in other embodiments, a Venturi portion 5 may be engaged with the connector 1 and is separatable from the connector 1, engaged by various means known to the skilled person. In this example, the connector 1 also comprises an integral nebuliser portion 14. The Venturi portion 5 of the connector 1 comprises vents 13 (or openings or apertures), these vents 13 face inside the mixing chamber 12, allowing fluid to pass from the mixing chamber to inside the Venturi portion 5 of the connector 1. Fluid, oxygen, air, gas, suspended nebuliser substances or any combination of the before mentioned, for example, within the mixing chamber may pass through the vents 18 and out the exit port 4 via the lumen of the exit port 4. The connector 1 comprises entrainment ports 18 (vents or openings or apertures 18) in the wall 9 of the connector 1 that are configured to allow air into the mixing chamber 12 especially when the second inlet port 6 is receiving fluid, for example, an oxygen mix via tubing 300 from an oxygen source not shown. When the fluid is received through the second inlet port 6 and exits in the Venturi portion 5 of the connector 1 this may entrain gas or air from outside of the connector 1, drawing gas or air through the entrainment ports 18 into the mixing chamber 12 of the connector 1. In this embodiment, the vents 18 are aligned at least partially with the entrainment ports 18 and are on the same plane H. In this Figure 14 embodiment there is a straight path fluid communication from the outside of the connector 1, through the entrainment ports 18, through the mixing chamber 12 through the vents 13 of the Venturi portion (or engaged Venturi device) to the lumen of the Venturi portion and exit port. Advantageously, this may allow air to easily enter the Venturi portion 5 and entrain fluid and nebulised suspended substances from the nebuliser portion 14.

[0291] Figure 15a and 15b show another embodiment of a connector 1, the connector 1 comprises an integral Venturi portion 5. Also shown is a nebuliser 14, engaged at the first inlet port 17 of the connector 1, a second inlet port 6 with L-shaped lumen. The second inlet port has engaged tubing 300 connected to an oxygen source not shown. The connector 1 comprises an adjustable entrainment port 18. The adjustable entrainment port 18 can be adjusted to vary the size of the opening size of the entrainment port 18 opening or vent 18. The connector 1 comprises a concentration adjuster 99. The concentration adjuster 99 is configured to slide along the outer wall 9 of the connector 1 , to vary the size of the entrainment port 18, such that more or less air may be entrained and thus varying the rate of flow of air into the mixing chamber 12 and the connector 1. Varying the rate of flow of the air entrained into the mixing chamber 12 of the connector 1 and ultimately into the Venturi portion 5 (or engaged Venturi device 5) of the connector 1, via vents 13, may give a different rate of oxygen exiting the connector 1 and thus to a user. In other embodiments, the concentration adjuster 99 may change the size of the vent 18 in different ways then sliding around the outer circumference of the connector 1, as described in this embodiment. The concentration adjuster 99 may comprise markings 16 that in use may be aligned with a marking 69 or point of position on the connector 1 to indicate different size openings of the vent 18 that may correspond to desired fixed rates of oxygen exiting the connector 1 (when connected to an oxygen source of a known air I oxygen concentration mix at a known rate of flow) and thus a desired fixed rate of oxygen can be delivered to a user. In this example, the nebuliser 14 is engaged with the first inlet port by a friction fit. The second inlet port comprises an L-shaped lumen that a portion of the L-shaped lumen is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the connector 1. The concentration adjuster 99 may slide along a portion of the wall 9 of the connector 1 , around a portion at least of the circumference of the connector 1. In this embodiment, the entrainment ports 18 that allow air to be entrained into the mixing chamber 12 are at least partly on the same plane H as the vents 13 of the Venturi portion 5 of the connector 1. This advantageously may allow easy entrainment of the air into the connector 1 and easy entrainment of substances suspected in fluid from the nebuliser 14.

[0292] Figures 16a and 16b show cut away side views of a particular embodiment of the present invention. Shown in this Figure 16 embodiment is a connector 1 with integral venturi portion 5, an exit port 4, an integral nebuliser portion 14, first inlet port 17, a second inlet port 6 with tubing 300 connected to an oxygen source not shown. Also shown is an entrainment port 18 and venturi vents 13 and mixing chamber 12. In this embodiment, both the Venturi portion 5 and nebuliser portions 14 are integral with the connector but in other embodiments, either one, or both, of the nebuliser 14 or Venturi 5 portions may be separate engageable elements. In this figure 16 embodiment, there is also an adjuster 99 on the outer wall 9 surface of the mixing chamber 12 portion of the connector 1 , but in other embodiments this may be in a different location. In this figure 16 embodiment, the adjuster 99 via a strut 99a rotates an inner door 99d that rotates around the air vents 13 of the Venturi portion 5 adjusting the size of the air vent 13 opening depending on the rotation of the adjuster 99. The door 99d is configured to slide around the lower portion of the Venturi portion 5 where the vents 13 are located and thus depending on the position of the door 99d may vary the size of the Vent 13 that is not blocked by the door 99d. In this way a user may adjust the adjuster 99 on the external side of the connector 1 to adjust the opening size of the opening of a or the vent or vents 13 of the Venturi portion 5 (or Venturi device 5 in some other embodiments), to enable delivery of a desire fixed rate of oxygen or mix of oxygen and other fluid, for example, to a user. The fixed rate of oxygen or other fluid may include air and nebulised material dispersed in a fluid from the nebuliser portion. The adjuster 99 may be marked that a certain length of rotation around the outer circumference of the connector 1 may, for example, corresponds to a certain fixed rate of oxygen delivery, from the connector 1 via the exit port 4 and hence to a user. In this embodiment the adjuster 99 adjusts the size of opening of the vents 13 of a Venturi portion 5 of a connector. Similarly in some other embodiments, the adjuster 99 may adjust the size of opening 13 of an engaged Venturi device 5 that is engaged with the connector 1, by moving a door 99d that is configured to.

[0293] Figures 17a and 17b show cut away side views of another embodiment of the connector. In this Figure 17 embodiment only the mixing chamber 12 and venturi 5 upper portion is shown in detail, but the connector 1 comprises an integral nebuliser 14 portion. In other embodiments the nebuliser 14 may be a separate element that is releasably engageable with the connector 1. Although in this embodiment the connector 1 comprises a Ventrui portion 5, in other embodiments the Venturi device may be separate from the connector 1 and releasably engageable with the connector 1. Also shown in this embodiment of figures 17a and 17b is the mixing chamber 12, air inlets 18, the venturi (portion) vents 13, the Venturi portion 5 and exit port 4, the second inlet port 6 with a portion of a tubing 300 that is in fluid communication with an oxygen source (not shown). Figure 17b shows a door 99d. In this figure 17 embodiment there is a stationary door 99d. However, instead of having an adjuster on the side of the connector 1 , in the Figure 17 embodiment the venturi portion 5, together with Venturi portion vents 13 are rotatable around at least a portion of the longitudinal axis of the connector 1 , thus rotation of the air vents 13 adjusts the size of the openings, blocked or not blocked by the door 99d which may remain stationary in relation to the Venturi portion 5. As the two parts Venturi portion 5 and mixing chamber 12 portion of the connector 1 are rotatable relative to each other in theory the Venturi portion 5 could be held stationary and the lower mixing chamber 12 portion 1 rotated partially around the longitudinal axis to have the same effect of varying the size of opening of Vents 13 whether it is the door that moves held fixed to the mixing chamber 12 portion, in some embodiments, or the openings of vents 13 move part of the Venturi portion 5. In alternative embodiments the vents 13 may be stationary and the door 99d may be rotated to adjust the opening size of the vents 13. In alternative embodiments the vents 13 to enable entry of fluid into the Venturi portion may be part of the mixing chamber 12 portion and the door 99d may be part of the Venturi portion 5. The rotation in this example is at least partially around the longitudinal axis. It is foreseen that the Venturi portion (or Venturi device in some alternative embodiments) may be configured to enable connection to the mixing chamber portion of the connector that also enables the rotation movement. The connector may be marked that rotation or positioning of the Venturi 5 portion or device of the connector may correspond to a different fixed rates of oxygen delivery.

[0294] In a variant embodiment of the Figure 17a, 17b embodiment shown the Venturi device 5 may be separatable from the connector 1 wherein the exit port 4 of the connector 1 is configured to receive a Venturi device 5 and engage with. In this alternative embodiment the connector 1 is configured that positioning an engaged Venturi device with the exit port at different positions, varies the opening size of the vent 13 of the vent 13 or vents 13 of the engaged Venturi device 5. In this variant embodiment the connector 1 comprises a fixed door 99d that is configured to block at least of portion of a vent 13 or vents 13 of an engaged Venturi device 5. In this variant embodiment of Figure 17, the connector comprises markings that corresponds to different positions for engaging a Venturi device 5 such that the different positions correspond to known size of opening of a vent 13 or vents of an engaged Venturi device 5. In this embodiment the top surface of the exit port 4 comprises markings. Thus, the connector 1 comprises markings that corresponds to different positions for engaging a Venturi device 5 such that the different positions correspond to known size-of-opening of a vent 13 or vents 13 of an engaged Venturi device 5 and thus known fixed rates of oxygen when in use with an appropriate oxygen mix supply and rate of flow. It is foreseen that a Venturi device 5 may be engaged with the connector 1 by a force friction fit at least partially into the exit port 4. In some embodiments, near the exit port or perhaps on the top surface wall of the exit port there may comprise marking that a position of an engaged Venturi device may be aligned with to give a known opening size of a vent or vents of the engaged Venturi device when engaged. Thus, one connector may be used with different Venturi devices 5or the same Venturi device 5 to vary the fixed rate of oxygen to a user, by differing the size of the opening available to an engaged Venturi device 5.
