AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The challenge of ensuring that aerial user equipments (UEs) respect No Transmit Zones (NTZs) is unclear, as existing mechanisms do not specify how to manage restricted areas to protect incumbent radio systems from interference.

Method used

A network device determines and manages information related to restricted areas for terminal devices, including location, waypoints, duration, and deregistration, to control reachability and downlink data, while a terminal device performs operations based on this information to adhere to NTZ regulations.

Benefits of technology

This approach ensures that aerial UEs comply with NTZ regulations, preventing interference and maintaining network management efficiency by managing reachability and data transmission in restricted areas.

Description

DEVICES AND METHODS OF COMMUNICATIONFIELD

[0002] Confederation of European posts and telecommunications (CEPT) electronic communications committee (ECC) decision introduces no transmit zones (NTZs) for aerial user equipments (UEs) . The ECC decision asserts that a mechanism is necessary to ensure that aerial UEs respect NTZs in order to protect incumbent radio systems from potential interference from aerial UEs. Since the ECC decision does not identify any specific radio access technology (RAT) , NTZs can be supported by both long term evolution (LTE) and new radio (NR) . However, how to ensure an aerial UE respects NTZs is still unclear and needs to be further developed.SUMMARY

[0039] In one aspect, a network device (for convenience, also referred to as first network device herein) may determine information (for convenience, also referred to as first information herein) of a restricted area associated with a terminal device. Based on the first information, the network device may manage at least one of the following: reachability of the terminal device, or downlink data for the terminal device. The terminal device may also determine the first information and perform an operation based on the first information. In this way, a management or operation of a terminal device based on restricted area may be carried out.

[0040] In another aspect, upon determination that update of information (i.e., the first information) of a restricted area associated with a terminal device is to be indicated, a  network device may transmit, to the terminal device, a message (e.g., a paging message or any other suitable messages) indicating the update of the first information. The terminal device may perform an operation based on updated first information. In this way, a management or operation of a terminal device based on update of restricted area may be carried out.

[0042] - geographical area of restricted area: identifies geographical area indicated by a geographical area field (including coordinates with (longitude, latitude, height) . Similar data types may be applied for height-dependent restricted area when served by RAN.

[0043] - radio parameters of restricted area: e.g., which bands are allowed and whether a transmission is restricted for a terminal device in a certain geography.

[0044] - restricted area information: indicates that a terminal device is not allowed to operate, or needs to be restricted by restricted area related regulations.

[0045] - cell may be impacted by a restricted area (location or frequency bands) : 1) cells may overlap completely or partially with the restricted area, and in this case, restricted area information refers to geospatial description of the restricted area (in two dimensions or three dimensions to consider height restrictions) ; or 2) cells may use restricted frequency bands of the restricted area, and in this case, restricted area information refers to restricted frequencies corresponding to such area.

[0046] - for delivering of restricted area information, the network may generate other restriction area based on restricted area information and deliver generated restriction area information. For example, the network may generate a restricted transmission area (RTA) , and a terminal device is not allowed to transmit at the whole RTA in frequencies corresponding to the restricted area.

[0069] It is to be understood that the numbers and connections of network devices, terminal devices and serving cells are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The communication network 100 may include any suitable network devices, terminal devices and serving cells adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0070] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions of management of a terminal device. These solutions will be described in detail with reference to Figs. 2 to 4.

[0071] EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF MANAGEMENT BASED ON RESTRICTED AREA INFORMATION

[0072] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution of management based on information of a restricted area. The solution will be described in connection with Fig. 2 below.

[0073] Fig. 2 illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating a process 200 for communication according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110, the RAN device 120 and the CN device 130 as illustrated in Fig. 1. Although the following description is given in connection with the RAN device 120 and the CN device 130, operations of the RAN device 120 and CN device 130 may be carried out by any network devices. For example, operations of the RAN device 120 may also be carried out by a CN device and operations of the CN device 130 may also be carried out by a RAN device.

[0074] As shown in Fig. 2, the CN device 130 may determine 210 information (i.e., the first information) of a restricted area associated with the terminal device 110 based on  information (for convenience, also referred to as second information herein) assist for determination of the first information of the restricted area.

[0075] With reference to Fig. 2, in some embodiments, the CN device 130 may receive 211 the second information from the terminal device 110 during registration or mobility registration update. For example, the terminal device 110 may transmit the second information to the CN device 130 in a non-access-stratum (NAS) signaling indicating a registration request or a mobility registration request.

[0076] With reference to Fig. 2, in some embodiments, the CN device 130 may receive 212 the second information from the RAN device 120. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may receive the second information from other CN devices (not shown) . For example, the CN device 130 is AMF, and the AMF may receive the second information from UDM, USS or PCF.

[0077] In some embodiments, the second information may comprise information of a location of the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the information of the location of the terminal device 110 may comprise user location information of the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the information of the location of the terminal device 110 may comprise a geospatial location of the terminal device 110.

[0078] In some embodiments, the second information may comprise information of the flightpath of the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the information of the flightpath of the terminal device 110 may comprise a set of waypoints (i.e., one or more waypoints) with or without corresponding timestamps. In some embodiments, the information of the flightpath of the terminal device 110 may comprise a set of waypoints (i.e., one or more waypoints) to be passed in a period of time. In some embodiments, the information of the flightpath of the terminal device 110 may comprise number (denoted as N herein) of waypoints to be passed. For example, at least N waypoints in the flightpath provided during access (e.g., in a radio resource control (RRC) connection establishment or RRC reconfiguration complete or RRC connection re-establishment or RRC connection resume) may be indicated. In another example, at least N waypoints in future from the current location or time may be indicated.

[0079] In some embodiments, the second information may comprise information of whether the terminal device 110 supports the restricted area. In some embodiments, the second information may comprise information of whether the terminal device 110 supports  an aerial function. For example, whether the terminal device 110 belong to terminal devices that support restricted area restriction functionality, non-UAV terminal devices operate at a high altitude (i.e., terrestrial UEs) , or UAV terminal devices that do not support restricted area restriction functionality.

[0080] It is to be noted that any combinations of the above second information or any other suitable information may also be feasible.

[0081] With reference to Fig. 2, based on the received second information, the CN device 130 may determine 213 the first information. In some embodiments, the first information may comprise a PLMN identity of the terminal device 110.

[0082] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise information of deregistration of the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the information of the deregistration may comprise a cause of the deregistration. For example, for the terminal device 110 that does not support the restricted area, the cause may indicate that PLMN is not allowed to operate or needs to be restricted for the terminal device. In some embodiments, the information of the deregistration may comprise a value of a timer for the terminal device 110 to be restricted, or not allowed to operate. In some embodiments, the information of the deregistration may comprise a variation threshold for a variation of a location of the terminal device. In some embodiments, the information of the deregistration may comprise a value of a timer for release of the first information.

[0083] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise information of a location of the restricted area, e.g., a geographical location of the restricted area. In some embodiments, the first information may comprise information of a flightpath of the terminal device 110, e.g., information of at least one waypoint associated with the restricted area within the flightpath.

[0084] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise information of a duration for maintaining the first information. For example, the information of the duration may indicate a timer for maintaining the first information, e.g., a start of the timer, and / or a length of the timer.

[0085] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise a target type of terminal device to restrict. The target type may comprise one of the following: terminal devices that support restricted area restriction functionality; non-UAV terminal devices that operate at a high altitude (i.e., terrestrial UEs) ; or UAV terminal devices that do not support  restricted area restriction functionality.

[0086] It is to be noted that any combinations of the above first information or any other suitable information may also be feasible.

[0087] With reference to Fig. 2, the CN device 130 may transmit 220 the determined first information to the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may transmit the determined first information to the terminal device 110 in a NAS signaling indicating a registration accept / reject or mobility registration success / failure.

[0088] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may include the determined first information in a paging message to assist the RAN device 120 in paging the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may include the determined first information in every subsequent paging message for all NG-RAN nodes selected by the CN device 130 for paging. In this way, the network may provide an indication of support of restricted area and / or flightpath information of a terminal device.

[0089] With reference to Fig. 2, based on the first information, the terminal device 110 may perform 230 an operation. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform a terminal device behavior related to restricted area regulations.

[0090] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may store or maintain the first information. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may store a list of first information. Each entry in the list corresponds to index information. The index information is associated with at least one of a PLMN ID, location information of the terminal device 110, or flightpath information of the terminal device 110.

[0091] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may maintain a timer for the first information. In some embodiments for the list of first information, the terminal device 110 may maintain a timer for each entry in the list.

[0092] In some embodiments, during running of the timer, the first information is considered to be applicable or valid. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be not allowed to register to the network or PLMN during the running of the timer. In some embodiments, for the terminal device 110 supporting the restricted area, the terminal device 110’s operation may follow the first information during the running of the timer.

[0093] In some embodiments, upon expiry of the timer, the terminal device 110 may release the first information or remove a corresponding entry in the list.

[0094] In some embodiments, if the variation of the location of the terminal device 110 is larger than or equal to the variation threshold, the first information is considered to be inapplicable or invalid. In some embodiments, if the variation of the location of the terminal device 110 is larger than or equal to the variation threshold, the terminal device 110 may release the first information or remove a corresponding entry in the list. In some embodiments, if the variation of the location of the terminal device 110 is larger than or equal to the variation threshold, the terminal device 110 may stop the timer. In some embodiments, if a distance between the location of the terminal device 110 and a reference location is larger than or equal to a distance threshold, the first information may be considered to be inapplicable or invalid. In some embodiments, if the distance between the location of the terminal device 110 and the reference location is larger than or equal to the distance threshold, the terminal device 110 may release the first information or remove a corresponding entry in the list. In some embodiments, if the distance between the location of the terminal device 110 and the reference location is larger than or equal to the distance threshold, the terminal device 110 may stop the timer. In some embodiments, the reference location may be indicated in the first information. In some embodiments, the reference location may be predefined.

[0095] Optionally, for a terminal device that does not support restricted area, in case of being deregistered with a cause value related to restricted area, the terminal device may perform the above operations.

[0096] In some embodiments, a non-aerial terminal device does not need to store the geographical location of the restricted area, and only needs to follow the restrictions indicated in the first information (e.g., based on the timer, the variation threshold or the distance threshold) .

[0097] In this way, CN may manage a terminal device by providing restricted area information, and enforcement of restricted area regulations may be facilitated.

[0098] With reference to Fig. 2, in some embodiments, the CN device 130 may receive 240 the first information from the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may consider current and expected future locations of the terminal device 110, and may provide the first information to the CN device 130 to indicate that the terminal device 110 is about to enter the restricted area or will enter the restricted area in future.

[0099] In some embodiments, a distance threshold (for convenience, also referred to as a first distance threshold herein) may be configured or predefined. If a distance (e.g., three-dimensional (3D) ) between a location of the terminal device 110 and the restricted area is lower than the first distance threshold, the terminal device 110 may determine that terminal device 110 is about to enter the restricted area or provide the first information to the CN device 130. In some embodiments, the distance may be calculated based on any point within the restricted area or any reference point configured.

[0100] In some embodiments, a distance threshold (for convenience, also referred to as a second distance threshold herein) may be configured or predefined. If a distance (e.g., 3D) between any waypoints of the flightpath of the terminal device 110 and the restricted area is equal to or lower than the second distance threshold, the terminal device 110 may determine that terminal device 110 is about to enter the restricted area, or provide the first information to the CN device 130. In some embodiments, the distance may be calculated based on any point within the restricted area or any reference point configured.

[0101] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may provide additional information of the flightpath of the terminal device 110 together with the first information. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may indicate a mapping between the first information and the additional information.

[0102] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may trigger a mobility registration update procedure to inform the CN device 130 of the first information or both the first information and the additional information, e.g., before entering the restricted area. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform a mobility registration update procedure upon exiting the restricted area.

[0103] In some embodiments, a distance threshold (for convenience, also referred to as a third distance threshold herein) may be configured or predefined. If a distance (e.g., three-dimensional (3D) ) between a location of the terminal device 110 and the restricted area is equal to or larger than the third distance threshold, the terminal device 110 may determine that terminal device 110 is about to exit the restricted area or provide the first information to the CN device 130. In some embodiments, the distance may be calculated based on any point within the restricted area or any reference point configured.

[0104] In some embodiments, a distance threshold (for convenience, also referred to as a fourth distance threshold herein) may be configured or predefined. If a distance (e.g., 3D)  between any waypoints of the flightpath of the terminal device 110 and the restricted area is equal to or larger than the fourth distance threshold, the terminal device 110 may determine that terminal device 110 is about to exit the restricted area, or provide the first information to the CN device 130. In some embodiments, the distance may be calculated based on any point within the restricted area or any reference point configured.

[0105] In some embodiments, if there is information indicating that a cell is impacted by the restricted area, or there is restricted area information broadcasting by the cell, the terminal device 110 may consider the cell as barred, i.e., camping is not allowed. The terminal device 110 may need to acquire the restricted area information in a system information block (SIB) and further decide whether the cell is barred based on the location or flightpath of the terminal device 110. In case of barred due to the restricted area, the terminal device 110 may indicate to upper layer that the cell is barred due to specific waypoints related to the restricted area.

[0106] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may access to the cell if the location of the terminal device 110 is not in the restricted area, or if at least N waypoints in future or one or more waypoints to be passed within a period of time in future do not overlap with the restricted area.

[0107] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may access to the cell based on location or flightpath information of the terminal device 110. For example, the terminal device 110 may indicate at least N waypoints in the flightpath information providing during access (in RRC connection establishment or RRC reconfiguration complete or RRC connection re-establishment or RRC connection resume) , e.g., N waypoints in future from the current location or time. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may indicate one or more waypoints which are to be passed within a period of time in future.

[0108] With reference to Fig. 2, based on the received or determined first information, the CN device 130 may perform 250 a management on the terminal device 110.

[0109] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may manage reachability of the terminal device 110 based on the first information. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may adjust at least one of a first timer (also referred to as a mobile reachable timer herein) for mobile reachability or a second timer (also referred to as an implicit deregistration timer herein) for implicit deregistration. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may adjust the first timer or the second timer or both such that the CN device 130 does not deregister  or implicitly deregister the terminal device 110 while the terminal device 110 is unreachable or unavailable due to the restricted area, or entering the restricted area or restricted by restricted area regulations or passing one or more waypoints within the restricted area. For example, if the terminal device 110 will spend M minutes in the restricted area, the CN device 130 may configure a periodic registration timer and / or the mobile reachable timer to be just greater than M minutes, and configure the implicit deregistration timer to be greater than N (N>M) minutes to avoid unintended implicit detach due to being restricted by the restricted area.

[0110] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may store the first information or the second information from the terminal device 110 in context of the terminal device 110.

[0111] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may consider that the terminal device 110 is unreachable since entering the restricted area or being restricted by restricted area regulations or passing one or more waypoints within the restricted area. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may consider that the terminal device 110 is unreachable until the terminal device 110 enters a connected state. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may consider that the terminal device 110 is unreachable until the terminal device 110 leaves the restricted area. For example, if the terminal device 110 receives information from the terminal device 110 or the RAN device 120 or other CN device indicating that the terminal device 110 is no longer impacted by the restricted area (e.g., due to moving of the terminal device 110 or update of the restricted area) , the terminal device 110 may determine that the terminal device 110 leaves the restricted area.

[0112] In some embodiments, if the terminal device 110 is unreachable, the CN device 130 may clear a paging proceed flag.

[0113] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may manage DL data for the terminal device 110 based on the first information. In some embodiments, the first information may be provided or used to handle mobile terminated (MT) communication with terminal devices that are unreachable or unavailable due to the restricted area, or enter the restricted area or are restricted by restricted area regulations or pass one or more waypoints within the restricted area.

[0114] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 (e.g., AMF) may determine wait time (e.g., estimated maximum wait time) based on the first information, and transmit or indicate the wait time to other network device (e.g., UPF, SMF or NEF) for extended buffering of  the DL data. For example, AMF may provide the estimated maximum wait time to SMF if the SMF indicates support of extended buffering. The SMF may determine extended buffering time based on the received estimated maximum wait time or local configuration. High latency communication may be supported by extended buffering of the DL data in UPF, SMF or NEF when a UE is unreachable or unavailable due to the restricted area, or enters the restricted area or is restricted by restricted area regulations or passes one or more waypoints within the restricted area.

[0115] In this way, unintended implicit detach due to being restricted by a restricted area may be avoided, and delivery of large DL data when a terminal device is being restricted by a restricted area may be avoided.

[0116] It is to be understood that the above process 200 is merely for illustration and is not intended for limitation. It is also to be understood that one or more operations in the process 200 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combinations.

[0117] EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF RESTRICTED AREA ENFORCEMENT

[0118] Embodiments of the present disclosure also provide a solution of restricted area enforcement. The solution will be described in connection with Fig. 3 below.

[0119] Fig. 3 illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another process 300 for communication according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 300 will be described with reference to Fig. 1. The process 300 may involve the terminal device 110, the RAN device 120 and the CN device 130 as illustrated in Fig. 1.

[0120] As shown in Fig. 3, the CN device 130 may obtain 310, from the RAN device 120, assistance information for verification of a set of terminal devices comprising the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the verification is targeting a specific terminal device (i.e., the terminal device 110) . In some embodiments, the verification is targeting one or more terminal devices in a specific range.

[0121] With reference to Fig. 3, in some embodiments, the CN device 130 may transmit 311 a request for the assistance information to the RAN device 120.

[0122] In some embodiments, the request may indicate an area (also referred to as a target area herein) . In some embodiments, the request may indicate the area associated with the set of terminal devices. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may determine the  target area based on the first information of restricted area described in the above process 200. In some embodiments, the request may indicate a frequency band (also referred to as a target frequency band herein) associated with the set of terminal devices. In some embodiments, the request may indicate an index associated with the verification or a procedure of the verification. It is to be noted that the request may indicate any combinations of the above information or any other suitable information. It is also to be noted that the request is optional.

[0123] With reference to Fig. 3, the RAN device 120 may transmit 312 the assistance information to the CN device 130. In some embodiments, the RAN device 120 may transmit the assistance information upon reception of the request from the CN device 130. In some embodiments, the RAN device 120 may transmit the assistance information without the request from the CN device 130.

[0124] In some embodiments, the RAN device 120 may obtain the set of terminal devices by performing a filtering based on information (e.g., the target area and / or the target frequency band) indicated in the request and a location and / or flightpath of a terminal device.

[0125] In some embodiments, the assistance information may comprise information of a flightpath of each terminal device in the set of terminal devices. In some embodiments, the assistance information may comprise information of a location of each terminal device in the set of terminal devices, e.g., a user location information or geospatial location of the terminal device. In some embodiments, the assistance information may comprise the index of the verification or the procedure of the verification. In some embodiments, the assistance information may comprise an identity of each terminal device in the set of terminal devices (e.g., a list of the terminal devices after the filtering) .

[0126] In some embodiments, the assistance information may comprise the first information of restricted area described in the above process 200. In some embodiments, the assistance information may comprise information of whether the set of terminal devices supports the restricted area. In some embodiments, the assistance information may comprise information of whether the set of terminal devices supports aerial functions.

[0127] In some embodiments, during a handover (HO) from a source node (e.g., the RAN device 120) to a target node (not shown) , the source node may transmit the assistance information (e.g., support of restricted area by the terminal device 110, or flightpath of the  terminal device 110) to the target node, e.g., via a handover request message or a source NG-RAN node to target NG-RAN node transparent container or a handover preparation information message.

[0128] The target node may provide the restricted area information (for example, radio parameters of the restricted area, e.g., which bands are allowed and whether the transmission is restricted for the terminal device 110 in a certain geography) to the source node, e.g., via a handover request acknowledge message or a target NG-RAN node to source NG-RAN node transparent container or a handover command message. In some embodiments, the target node may provide the restricted area information associate with the flight path information of the terminal device 110.

[0129] In case of unsuccessful operation, the target node may indicate a cause value related to the restricted area, e.g., an appropriate cause value. Alternatively or additionally, the target node may indicate may include the restricted area information of this cell and the selected PLMN, and / or flightpath information related with the restricted area information.

[0130] In this way, support of restricted area by a terminal device will follow received restricted area information, and the network may further perform restricted area enforcement for an aerial UE that does not support a restricted area.

[0131] In some embodiments, a conditional event based on a restricted area may be defined for HO. In some embodiments, an entering condition may be defined as: a distance between a location of a terminal device (or at least N waypoints in a flightpath (e.g., from now or a period of time in future) ) and any point in the restricted area is larger than a first threshold. A leaving condition may be defined as: a distance between a location of a terminal device (or at least N waypoints in a flightpath (from now or a period of time in future) ) and any point in the restricted area is no larger than a second threshold.

[0132] In other words, if the distance between the location of the terminal device and the restricted area (e.g., the distance is calculated based on any point within the restricted area or any reference point configured) is smaller than the first threshold, the HO may be not triggered. In another example, if the distance between any waypoint of the flightpath and the restricted area (e.g., the distance is calculated based on any point within the restricted area or any reference point configured) is smaller than the second threshold, the HO may be not triggered.

[0133] For illustration, an example procedure may be described as below.

[0134] if the condEventId is associated with condEventX, and if the entry conditions applicable for this event associated with the condReconfigId, i.e. the event corresponding with the condEventId (s) of the corresponding condTriggerConfig within VarConditionalReconfig, is fulfilled for the applicable cell during the corresponding timeToTrigger defined for this event within the VarConditionalReconfig;

[0135] - consider the event associated to that measId to be not fulfilled.

[0136] In this way, HO may only be executed when a terminal device is not about to enter a restricted area.

[0137] Continuing to refer to Fig. 3, the CN device 130 may verify 320 compliance of the terminal device 110 with requirements of the restricted area. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may perform the verification based on the assistance information. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may verify whether the location of the terminal device 110 respects the restricted area. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may verify whether the flightpath of the terminal device 110 respects the restricted area.

[0138] In some alternative embodiments, the CN device 130 may perform the verification without the assistance information from the RAN device 120. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may indicate another network device (e.g., LMF) to initiate a LTE positioning protocol (LPP) procedure to determine the location of the terminal device 110, and perform the verification based on the location of the terminal device 110 obtained based on the LPP procedure. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may indicate another network device (e.g., sensing function (SF) ) to initiate a sensing procedure to determine the location or the presence of the terminal device 110, and perform the verification base on the result of the sensing procedure.

[0139] With reference to Fig. 3, the CN device 130 may perform 330 restrict area  enforcement. In this way, CN may enforce restricted area regulations with the assistance of RAN, which have finer information of aerial states of terminal devices.

[0140] In some alternative embodiments, the CN device 130 may transmit 340 information of a verification result to the RAN device 120. In some embodiments, the information of the verification result may comprise an ID of the terminal device 110 or an index of a procedure of restricted area enforcement.

[0141] In some embodiments, the information of the verification result may comprise an index of the first information. The index of the first information may be associated with a location or flightpath of a terminal device. For example, the index of the first information may be associated with an index of a waypoint.

[0142] In some embodiments, the information of the verification result may comprise an indication of an operation. For example, the operation may comprise at least one of the following suggesting operations: ceasing a scheduling; releasing a terminal device (e.g., with a backoff timer) ; access control method; or redirecting terminal devices to different frequency layers or RATs (e.g., with ‘Index to RAT / Frequency Selection Priority’ (RFSP Index) ) .

[0143] With reference to Fig. 3, based on the information of the verification result, the RAN device 120 may perform 350 the procedure of restricted area enforcement, and transmit 360 a feedback indicating that the procedure of restricted area enforcement is completed successfully or unsuccessfully. In this way, CN may verify compliance of the terminal device with requirements of the restricted area, and instruct RAN to perform restricted area enforcement for the terminal device.

[0144] It is to be understood that the above process 300 is merely for illustration and is not intended for limitation. It is also to be understood that one or more operations in the process 300 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combinations.

[0145] EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF UPDATE OF RESTRICTED AREA INFORMATION

[0146] Embodiments of the present disclosure also provide a solution of restricted area information update. The solution will be described in connection with Fig. 4 below.

[0147] Fig. 4 illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another process 400 for communication according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to Fig. 1. The process 400 may  involve the terminal device 110, the RAN device 120 and the CN device 130 as illustrated in Fig. 1.

[0148] As shown in Fig. 4, the terminal device 110 may receive 410 update of information (i.e., the first information) of a restricted area associated with the terminal device 110. The update of the first information may refer to release or modification or other operations of the first information, and may also referred to as restricted area update herein. In some embodiments, the update of the first information may refer to the release of the restriction caused by the restricted area for the terminal device 110.

[0149] With reference to Fig. 4, the CN device 130 may determine 411 whether the update of the first information of the restricted area associated with the terminal device 110 is to be indicated.

[0150] It is assumed that the terminal device 110 supporting restricted area may support an operation of a paging cause indication for restricted area update, and the CN device 130 that supports a paging cause indication for restricted area may provide an indication for restricted area update in a paging message (i.e., if the terminal device 110 indicates the paging cause indication for restricted area update is supported to the network) .

[0151] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may determine whether to indicate the update of the first information based on a paging policy indicator. If the paging policy indicator indicates the update of the first information, the CN device 130 may determine that the update of the first information is to be indicated.

[0152] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may determine whether to indicate the update of the first information based on an indication from a further network device (e.g., other CN device) . If the indication from the further network device indicates the update of the first information, the CN device 130 may determine that the update of the first information is to be indicated.

[0153] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may determine whether to indicate the update of the first information based on an updated location of the restricted area in the first information and a location or flightpath of the terminal device 110. If the updated location of the restricted area in the first information does not overlap with the location or flightpath of the terminal device 110 (i.e., the terminal device 110 is no longer impacted by the restricted area) , the CN device 130 may determine that the update of the first information is to be indicated.

[0154] With reference to Fig. 4, upon determination that the update of the first information is to be indicated, the CN device 130 may indicate 412 the update of the first information to the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may indicate the update of the first information to the terminal device 110 via the RAN device 120.

[0155] In some embodiments, the RAN device 120 may use a system information (SI) update procedure to indicate the update of the first information. The terminal device 110 may apply a SI acquisition procedure for SI related to the first information. In another example, the RAN device 120 may indicate the update of the first information in paging downlink control information (DCI) or paging short message.

[0156] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 or the RAN device 120 may use a paging message to indicate the update of the first information to the terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the paging message may not explicitly indicate restricted area update, but imply that the terminal device 110 should respond to the paging message regardless of restricted area update (e.g., an indication for ignoring restricted area) . That is, a separate paging record list that the terminal device 110 should respond even the terminal device 110 is restricted by restricted area is provided. In some embodiments, the paging message may be indicated as a specific type of paging (e.g., a paging related to restricted area) , to which the terminal device 110 should respond even the terminal device 110 is restricted by restricted area.

[0157] In some embodiments, the paging message may comprise a paging cause indicating the update of the first information. The paging cause may indicate whether the paging message is originated due to restricted area update. In some embodiments, a list of cause values may be provided. The list of cause values may include the same number of entries, and may be listed in the same order, as in a paging record list without suffix or suffix < 19. Each entry corresponds to a terminal device (the corresponding entry in the paging record list without suffix or suffix < 19) . If this paging cause field is present, it implies that the corresponding paging entry is for restricted area update. If upper layers indicate the support of paging cause for restricted area update and if this paging cause field is not present but a paging record list for restricted area update cause is present, it implies that the corresponding paging entry is for a service other than restricted area update. Otherwise, paging cause is undetermined.

[0158] For illustration, an example paging may be described as below.

[0159] PagingRecordList-NTZ : : = SEQUENCE (SIZE (1.. maxNrofPageRec) ) OF PagingRecord-NTZ

[0160] PagingRecord-NTZ : : = SEQUENCE {pagingCause ENUMERATED {NTZ} OPTIONAL

[0161] }

[0162] In this example paging, an information element (IE) ‘NTZ’ indicates a paging cause for restricted area update. An IE ‘PagingRecordList-NTZ’ may be replaced with ‘PagingRecordList-19’ , and an IE ‘PagingRecord-NTZ’ may be replaced with ‘PagingRecord-19’ .

[0163] In some embodiments, the paging message may comprise a paging record indicating the update of the first information. For example, a paging record list with suffix indicating for restricted area update may be provided. The paging record list may include the same number of entries, and listed in the same order, as in a paging record list without suffix, each entry corresponds to a UE (in the paging record list without suffix) .

[0164] For illustration, an example paging may be described as below.

[0165] PagingRecord-NTZ : : = SEQUENCE {

[0166] NTZ ENUMERATED {true} OPTIONAL

[0167] }

[0168] In this example paging, an IE ‘NTZ’ indicates a paging record for restricted area update. An IE ‘PagingRecord-NTZ’ may be replaced with ‘PagingRecord-19’ .

[0169] In some embodiments, the paging message may comprise a paging record list for the update of the first information. That is, the paging record list is specific for restricted area update. The paging record list may include a list of IDs and / or access types of terminal devices.

[0170] For illustration, an example paging may be described as below.

[0171] In this example paging, an IE ‘PagingRecordList-NTZ’ indicates a paging recode list for restricted area update, an IE ‘ue-Identity’ indicates an ID of a UE for restricted area update, and an IE ‘accessType’ indicates an access type of the UE for restricted area update. An IE ‘PagingRecordList-NTZ’ may be replaced with ‘PagingRecordList-19’ , and an IE ‘PagingRecord-NTZ’ may be replaced with ‘PagingRecord-19’ .

[0172] In some embodiments, the CN device 130 may transmit, to the RAN device 120, a NGAP paging message indicating the update of the first information. Upon reception of the NGAP paging message, the RAN device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, a Uu paging message indicating the update of the first information.

[0173] For illustration, an example procedure is described below by taking AMF as an example of the CN device 130. When UE context in AMF indicates a paging cause indication for restricted area update is supported, in order to require NG RAN to deliver the paging cause indication in a RAN paging message for the UE in RRC_INACTIVE state, the AMF provides an indication indicating the paging cause indication for restricted area update is supported to the NG-RAN. Upon reception of this indication, the NG-RAN that supports the paging cause indication for restricted area update stores the restricted area update in the UE context. For a UE in RRC_INACTIVE, the NG-RAN may provide the paging cause indication for restricted area update in the RAN paging message only when there is paging cause indication for restricted area update in the UE context and detects DL data which triggers the RAN paging message is related to restricted area update (i.e., based on a paging policy indicator in a header of the received DL data) .

[0174] The restricted area update is for releasing or modifying restriction of a restricted area. This may imply at least one of the following: the terminal device 110 may activate an AS layer; the terminal device 110 may consider that it is unnecessary to cease transmitting any data; the terminal device 110 may be allowed to respond to a paging; the terminal device 110 may be allowed to initiate an uplink transmission; the restriction of the restricted area should be ignored for the concerned procedure (e.g., paging) ; reception of  the paging now may be allowed to forward to the upper layers; the terminal device 110 may resume a RRC connection or initiate a RRC connection resume procedure.

[0175] With reference to Fig. 4, upon reception of the update (i.e., restricted area update) of the first information, the terminal device 110 may perform 420 an operation based on updated first information.

[0176] In some embodiments, upon the terminal device 110 received paging (i.e., a UE ID included in a paging record in a paging record list matches a UE ID allocated by upper layers) but the terminal device 110 is restricted by restricted area, the terminal device 110 may determine not respond to the paging. However, if the terminal device 110 received paging includes a specific paging record list (i.e., a UE ID included in a paging record in the specific paging record list matches a UE ID allocated by upper layers) , the terminal device 110 may determine to respond the paging.

[0177] In some embodiments, responding the paging implies that the terminal device 110 may forward at least one of the UE ID, access type or paging cause to the upper layers. The terminal device 110 may at least indicate the upper layers that the restriction of restricted area should be ignored for the concerned paging procedure.

[0178] It is assumed that the terminal device 110 is a terminal device that supports a paging cause indication for restricted area update is capable to differentiate between paging from a network (i.e., when the terminal device is restricted by a restricted area) . In this case, the terminal device 110 may have different behaviors upon reception of a paging for restricted area update, a paging without the paging cause indication, or a paging from a CN device that does not support a paging cause indication for restricted area update.

[0179] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the paging cause indication for restricted area update is supported in the current registration area by 5G core (5GC) based on capability exchange with the CN device 130. The terminal device 110 may determine that the paging cause indication for restricted area update is supported when one or more conditions are fulfilled.

[0180] For example, the terminal device 110 may determine that the paging cause indication for restricted area update is supported by RAN, as indicated in the received Uu message (e.g., paging message) . In another example, the terminal device 110 may determine that the paging cause indication for restricted area update is supported by CN, as indicated in the capability exchange with the CN device 130.

[0181] In some embodiments, upon reception of the update of the first information, the terminal device 110 may indicate at least part of the update of the first information to an upper layer. In some embodiments, if the terminal device 110 does not respond to a paging message comprising the updated of the first information due to the restricted area, the terminal device 110 may forward an ID of the terminal device 110, access type or paging cause comprised in the paging message to the upper layers. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may forward, to the upper layer, an indication of being restricted by the restricted area.

[0182] In some embodiments, if the update indicates a release or modification of the first information, the terminal device 110 may discard all stored first information. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may store the updated first information.

[0183] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine whether a behavior of the terminal device 110 is restricted by the restricted area for a location or flightpath of the terminal device 110. That is, the terminal device 110 may evaluate whether to change the behavior of “restricted by restricted area” for the current location or flightpath. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may exit from the behavior of “restricted by restricted area” . In this case, the terminal device 110 may activate the AS layer. The terminal device 110 may consider that there is no need to cease transmitting any data in the restricted area. The terminal device 110 may stop a timer (e.g., T390) for access barring. That is, the terminal device 110 may stop the timer for all access categories, if the timer is running.

[0184] In some embodiments, the update of the first information may be a partial or delta update. In some embodiments, if the first information includes a list of entries, the update of the first information may indicate one or more entries to be updated in the list of entries. The one or more entries to be updated may be indicated by one or more corresponding indexes.

[0185] In some embodiments, if the first information includes a list of entries, and each entry is associated with flightpath information (e.g., a waypoint) , the update of the first information may indicate one or more entries to be updated. The one or more entries to be updated may be indicated by an index of the flightpath information (e.g., an index of the waypoint) .

[0186] Continuing to refer to Fig. 4, the terminal device 110 may trigger 430 an update of  the first information. In some embodiments, if a flightpath of the terminal device 110 is updated, the terminal device 110 may update the first information.

[0187] In some embodiments, the update of the flightpath may be associated with a distance-based or time-based condition. In some embodiments, the distance-based condition comprises that for at least one waypoint, a 3D distance between a previously provided location and a new location is greater than a distance threshold. The distance threshold may be configured or predefined. It is to be noted that any other suitable distance-based conditions may also be feasible. In some embodiments, the time-based condition comprises that for at least one waypoint, a time difference between a previously provided timestamp and a new timestamp (if available) is greater than a time threshold. The time threshold may be configured or predefined. It is to be noted that any other suitable time-based conditions may also be feasible.

[0188] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may consider that the flightpath is to be updated when the distance-base or time-based condition are met for any of the waypoints in the flightpath. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may consider that the flightpath is to be updated if a new waypoint (and / or correspond timestamp) has been added or if a future waypoint (and / or correspond timestamp) has been removed from the flightpath information.

[0189] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 in an idle or inactive state may need to have a valid version of the first information, if the terminal device 110 is an aerial UE or supports the restricted area or is configured to be restricted by restricted area regulations.

[0190] In some embodiments, the first information may be associated with a validity duration. That is, the first information may be periodically updated. In some embodiments, the validity duration may be configured by the network for the first information (i.e. for serving and / or neighbor cell restricted area) . The validity duration may indicate a maximum time duration (from a start time) during which the terminal device 110 can consider that the first information is valid. During the validity duration, the terminal device 110 may apply the first information without having acquired new first information. In some embodiments, the configured validity duration may apply to both connected and idle state terminal devices.

[0191] In some embodiments, the unit of the validity duration may be second. The value  of the validity duration may be infinity. If the validity duration is absent, the terminal device 110 may consider that the validity duration of the first information is infinity.

[0192] In some embodiments, if the validity duration is absent for a neighbor cell, the terminal device 110 may use the validity duration for a serving cell. It is to be noted that the validity duration is excluded upon determination of changes in system information.

[0193] In some embodiments, if the flightpath is updated, the terminal device 110 may update the first information by SI acquisition. In some embodiments, if the flightpath is updated, the terminal device 110 may update the first information by transmitting a request for the first information to the CN device 130.

[0194] In some embodiments, upon reception of a paging (i.e., a UE ID included in the paging matches the UE ID allocated by the upper layer) , the terminal device 110 may indicate, to the upper layer, at least one of the UE ID, access type or paging cause (e.g., a paging cause for restricted area update) . In some embodiments, upon the update of the first information is indicated, the terminal device 110 may resume the connection (e.g., with a resume cause related to restricted area or for restricted area update) .

[0195] In some embodiments, upon reception of a paging (i.e., a UE ID included in the paging matches the UE ID allocated by the upper layer) , if the update of the first information is indicated, the terminal device 110 may indicate the upper layer to update the first information (e.g., with a paging cause for restricted area update) , or resume a connection (e.g., with a resume cause related to restricted area or for restricted area update) .

[0196] In some embodiments, when the terminal device 110 is restricted by the restricted area, the terminal device 110 may not respond to the paging due to the restricted area. The terminal device 110 may not indicate the paging to the upper layer (i.e., may not forward at least one of the UE ID, access type or paging cause to the upper layer) . For example, upon the update of the first information is indicated, the terminal device 110 may forward at least one of the UE ID, access type or paging cause (e.g., with a paging cause for restricted area update) to the upper layer, or resume the connection (e.g., with a resume cause related to restricted area or for restricted area update) . The terminal device 110 may forward information related to a previous paging (to which no response is made due to the restricted area) .

[0197] For illustration, an example procedure for an idle state may be described as below.

[0198] 1> if in RRC_IDLE, for each of the PagingRecord, if any, included in the  Paging message, or

[0199] 1> if in RRC_IDLE, for the PagingRecord, if any, included in the UuMessageTransferSidelink message received from the connected L2 U2N Relay UE:

[0200] 2> if the ue-Identity included in the PagingRecord matches the UE identity allocated by upper layers:

[0201] 3> if upper layers indicate the support of paging cause:

[0202] 4> forward the ue-Identity, accessType (if present) and paging cause (if determined) to the upper layers;

[0203] 3> else:

[0204] 4> forward the ue-Identity and accessType (if present) to the upper layers.

[0205] For illustration, an example procedure for an inactive state may be described as below.

[0206] 1> if in RRC_INACTIVE, for each of the PagingRecord, if any, included in the Paging message, or

[0207] 1> if in RRC_INACTIVE, for the PagingRecord, if any, included in the UuMessageTransferSidelink message received from the connected L2 U2N Relay UE:

[0208] 2> if an indication of restricted area update was included in the paging message:

[0209] 3> initiate the RRC connection resumption procedure with resumeCause set to restricted area update.

[0210] For illustration, another example procedure for an inactive state may be described as below.

[0211] 1> if in RRC_INACTIVE, for each of the PagingRecord, if any, included in the Paging message, or

[0212] 1> if in RRC_INACTIVE, for the PagingRecord, if any, included in the UuMessageTransferSidelink message received from the connected L2 U2N Relay UE:

[0213] 2> if the UE is configured by upper layers with Access Identity m includes in a predefined Access Identity set:

[0214] 3> initiate the RRC connection resumption procedure with resumeCause set to restricted area update.

[0216] In some embodiments, the update of the restricted area may be indicated in a message other than a paging message, or just indicated from the upper layer of the terminal device 110. In that case, the cause value “paging cause for restricted area update” may be replaced with other types of cause value.

[0217] With the process 400, a management based on updated restricted area information may be carried out.

[0218] It is to be understood that the above process 400 is merely for illustration and is not intended for limitation, and one or more operations in the process 400 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combinations.

[0219] It is also to be understood that operations in the processes 200 to 400 described with reference to Figs. 2 to 4 may be carried out separately or in any suitable combination.

[0220] EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF METHODS

[0221] Accordingly, embodiments of the present disclosure provide methods of communication implemented at a terminal device. These methods will be described below with reference to Figs. 5 to 8.

[0222] Fig. 5 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 500 of communication implemented at a network device (e.g., CN device, also referred to as a first network device herein) in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the method 500 may be performed at the CN device 130 as shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose of discussion, in the following, the method 500 will be described with reference to Fig. 1. It is to be understood that the method 500 may include additional blocks not shown and / or may omit some blocks as shown, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0223] At block 510, a first network device (e.g., the CN device 130) may determine first information of a restricted area associated with a terminal device (e.g., the terminal device 110) . In some embodiments, the first information may comprise at least one of the following: information of a location of the restricted area, information of at least one waypoint associated with the restricted area within a flightpath of the terminal device, information of a duration for maintaining the first information, information of deregistration of the terminal device, or a public land mobile network identity of the terminal device. In some embodiments, the information of deregistration of the terminal device may comprise at least one of the following: a cause of the deregistration, a variation threshold for a variation of a location of the terminal device, or a value of a timer for release of the first information.

[0224] In some embodiments, the first network device may determine the first information by receiving second information from the terminal device or a second network device (e.g., the RAN device 120 or another CN device) , and determining the first information based on the second information. In some embodiments, the second information may comprise at least one of the following: information of a location of the terminal device, information of the flightpath of the terminal device, information of whether the terminal device supports the restricted area, or information of whether the terminal device supports an aerial function. In some embodiments, the information of the flightpath of the terminal device may comprise at least one of the following: number of waypoints to be passed, or a set of waypoints to be passed in a period of time. In some embodiments, the first network device may transmit the first information to the terminal device.

[0225] In some embodiments, the first network device may determine the first information by:receiving the first information from the terminal device.

[0226] At block 520, the first network device may manage, based on the first information,  at least one of the following: reachability of the terminal device, or downlink data for the terminal device.

[0227] In some embodiments, the first network device may manage the reachability of the terminal device by at least one of the following: adjusting at least one of a first timer for mobile reachability or a second timer for implicit deregistration; storing the first information; or considering that the terminal device is unreachable until the terminal device enters a connected state or leaves the restricted area.

[0228] In some embodiments, the first network device may manage the downlink data for the terminal device by: determining wait time based on the first information; and transmitting, to a second network device, the wait time for extended buffering of the downlink data.

[0229] In some embodiments, the first network device may receive, from a second network device (e.g., the RAN device 120 or another CN device) , assistance information for verification of a set of terminal devices comprising the terminal device, and verify compliance of the terminal device with requirements of the restricted area based on the assistance information. In some embodiments, the assistance information may comprise at least one of the following: information of a flightpath of each terminal device in the set of terminal devices, information of a location of each terminal device in the set of terminal devices, or an index of the verification.

[0230] In some embodiments, the first network device may transmit a request for the assistance information to the second network device. In some embodiments, the request may indicate at least one of the following: an area associated with the set of terminal devices, a frequency band associated with the set of terminal devices, or the index associated with the verification.

[0231] In some embodiments, the first network device may verify the compliance of the terminal device with requirements of the restricted area by at least one of the following: verifying whether the location of the terminal device respects the restricted area; or verifying whether the flightpath of the terminal device respects the restricted area.

[0232] With the method 500, a management of a terminal device based on restricted area may be carried out.

[0233] Fig. 6 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 600 of communication implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the method 600 may be performed at the terminal device 110 as  shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose of discussion, in the following, the method 600 will be described with reference to Fig. 1. It is to be understood that the method 600 may include additional blocks not shown and / or may omit some blocks as shown, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0234] At block 610, a terminal device (e.g., the terminal device 110) may determine first information of a restricted area associated with a terminal device.

[0235] At block 620, the terminal device may perform an operation based on the first information.

[0236] In some embodiments, the terminal device may determine the first information by: transmitting second information to a first network device and receiving the first information from the first network device. The second information may be used by the first network device for determination of the first information.

[0244] In some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that a flightpath is updated, the terminal device may update the first information.

[0245] In some embodiments, the terminal device may forward, to the upper layers, at least one of the following: an identity of the terminal device, access type or a paging cause comprised in the paging message; or an indication of being restricted by the restricted area.

[0246] With the method 700, an operation of a terminal device based on update of restricted area may be carried out.

[0247] Fig. 8 illustrates another example method 800 of communication implemented at a network device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the method 800 may be performed at the CN device 130 as shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose of discussion, in the following, the method 800 will be described with reference  to Fig. 1. It is to be understood that the method 800 may include additional blocks not shown and / or may omit some blocks as shown, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0248] At block 810, a network device (e.g., the CN device 130) may determine that update of first information of a restricted area associated with a terminal device is to be indicated.

[0249] In some embodiments, the network device may determine that the update of the first information is to be indicated based on at least one of the following: a paging policy indicator indicating the update of the first information; an indication indicating the update of the first information is received from a further network device (e.g., other CN device) ; or an updated location of the restricted area in the first information does not overlap with a location or flightpath of the terminal device.

[0250] At block 820, the network device may transmit, to the terminal device, a paging message indicating the update of the first information.

[0251] In some embodiments, the paging message may comprise at least one of the following: a paging cause indicating the update of the first information, a paging record indicating the update of the first information, or a paging record list for the update of the first information.

[0252] With the method 800, a management of a terminal device based on update of restricted area may be carried out.

[0253] It is to be understood that operations of the methods 500 to 800 correspond to that described with reference to Figs. 2 to 4, and thus other details are not repeated here for conciseness.
