Causes of hair loss include genetic androgen hormones, nutritional disorders due to local blood flow disorders, autonomic nervous system disorders, autoimmune diseases, and endocrine disorders, but the exact cause is still unknown. Finasteride, the most representative hair loss prevention drug, is a drug that inhibits the activity of 5α-reductase, which produces dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a substance that directly causes hair loss. However, finasteride can cause fetal malformations in pregnant women, and side effects such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders have been reported with long-term use, so caution is required when taking it. Minoxidil-containing hair growth products, which are widely used, are also FDA-approved as over-the-counter drugs.
