Abstract

A twin roll casting method and apparatus for producing a steel strip with high surface quality are disclosed. The method comprises controlling conditions in a hot box located between a twin roll caster and a hot rolling mill and generating a target thin scale comprising compact, well-adhered and ductile scale on the as-cast cast strip before the strip reaches a hot rolling mill. The conditions include the temperature of the cast strip, the flow rate of N2 into the hot box, and the flow rate of air towards upper and lower surfaces of the cast strip in the hot box. In addition, the method may comprise controlling an exit temperature from a cooling step after the hot rolling step and a coiling temperature in a subsequent coiling step to suppress excessive growth of the scale on the strip steel.

Description

SCALE CONTROLTECHNICAL FIELD AND BACKGROUNDThe invention is in a technical field of twin-roll casting, and specifically relates to a method for producing thin steel strips with high surface quality.In a twin roll caster, molten metal, typically steel, is delivered from a delivery system to a casting pool supported on casting surfaces of a pair of counter-rotated horizontal casting rolls, which are internally water cooled so that solidified metal shells form on the moving casting roll surfaces. The metal shells are brought together at a nip between them to produce a solidified strip product delivered downwardly from the nip between the casting rolls. The term “nip” is used herein to refer to the general region at which the casting rolls are closest together.The molten metal may be poured from a ladle into a smaller vessel or a series of smaller vessels from which it flows through a metal delivery nozzle or nozzles located above the nip to form the casting pool of molten metal supported on the casting surfaces of the casting rolls above the nip and extending the length of the nip.The casting pool is usually confined between side plates or side dams held in sliding engagement with end portions of the casting rolls to restrict the casting pool against outflow. The upper surface of the casting pool (generally referred to as the “meniscus” level) is usually above the lower end of the delivery nozzle so that the lower end of the delivery nozzle is immersed within the casting pool.When casting steel strip by a twin roll caster, the thin strip exits the nip, passes across a guide table, through a pinch roll stand and then through a hot rolling mill, where the thin strip is reduced to a desired thickness. The section of the apparatus between the caster and the rolling mill is enclosed by hot boxes that make it possible to control the atmosphere around the strip as it passes from the caster to the hot rolling mill. The hot rolled strip is cooled to form strip with a required microstructure for end use applications. The cooled strip is then coiled, with a shear cutting the strip periodically upstream of the coiler to form required lengths of strip in each coil.Depending on the steel compositions and the casting conditions, twin roll cast, hot rolled and cooled strip can be used in a range of end use applications.Twin-roll cast strip steel is mainly used for parts with simpler forming processes, such as agricultural machinery covers, shelf panels, and truck compartment panels. Due to its thin product specifications, it is highly consistent with the current technology development trend of lightweight and energy-saving steel for commercial vehicles and engineering machinery. Poor control of the temperature and oxidizing atmosphere in the casting and rolling zones during the production of twin-roll cast strip steel can lead to undesirable loose oxide scale on the surface of the strip steel, which can cause quality problems such as surface spidering, flaking and poor adherence during use by downstream customers, and poor surface quality during subsequent spraying, affecting the use in end use applications.International publication WO2022057757A1 in the name of Baoshan Iron &Steel Co.Ltd discloses a method for continuous surface treatment of hot-rolled strip and a production line used therein. The hot-rolled strip is welded to form a continuous form and then straightened. A force is applied to the surface of the hot-rolled strip to remove oxide particles attached to the surface of the strip. The strip is then coated with a protective coating material and allowed to cure and cooled to room temperature. The coating is tested online and, if the coating is at or above a threshold quality, the coated strip is coiled or cut and stacked according to the requirements of the finished product. This method can not only effectively recover the oxide dust particles on the surface of the hot-rolled strip, but also form a protective layer on the surface of the hot-rolled strip, so as to avoid the phenomenon of the strip generating oxide dust particles again to pollute the environment and the surface of the hot-rolled strip rusting during the subsequent processing, storage and transportation.The invention is concerned with addressing the above technical issue in an alternative way to that disclosed in International publication WO2022057757A1.The above comments are not an admission of the common general knowledge in China or elsewhere.SUMMARYThe invention forms a relatively thin oxide scale on a twin-roll cast steel strip before hot rolling the strip.The invention controls a hot rolling exit temperature for cast strip to inhibit excessive growth of the oxide scale on the steel strip.The invention makes it possible for the twin-roll cast steel strip to have oxide scale with good compactness, adhesion and ductility.In broad terms, the invention provides a twin roll casting method for producing a steel strip with high surface quality comprising  m3 / h air into hot box 3#towards an upper surface of the cast strip in the hot box 3#-,- supplying up to 150 ± 50 m3 / h air into hot box 3#towards a lower surface of the cast strip in the hot box 3#,- supplying the following amounts of N2 into hot boxes1#, 2#and 3#respectively as follows:hot box 1#: 500-1100 ± 50 m3 / h,hot box 2#: 500-900 ± 50 m3 / h,hot box 3#: 300-700 m3 / h.It is noted that the strip speed and strip width are relevant factors to select the volumetric flow rates of N2 into hot boxes1#, 2#and 3#and the optional volumetric flow rates of air into hot box 3#in any given situationIt is noted that the invention extends to embodiments in which there are separate enclosures, each defining separate chambers, i.e. hot boxes #1, #2, and #3.After the hot rolling mill 32, the hot rolled thin strip passes into a cooling station 97, where the strip is cooled by water that is delivered by spray nozzles 90 of a plurality of rows of water spray assemblies extending across a run-out table 33 of the apparatus as the strip moves over the run-out table 33 in the cooling station 97. While spray nozzles atomize coolant to generate a spray, any other coolant discharge port may be employed in any embodiment in lieu of spray nozzles. In addition to generating a spray, other types of coolant discharge ports may discharge a non-atomized flow of coolant. The cooling station 97 cools the hot rolled thin strip to any suitable temperature having regard to the steel composition and the microstructure required for end-use applications for the steel strip.The cooled hot rolled cast thin strip 21 then passes through a second pinch roll stand 91 having a pair of rollers 91A that provide tension to the cast thin strip 21 during the shear cut.In the exemplary embodiment shown in Figure 3, cooling station 97 extends along the path 99 of the strip between the hot rolling mill 32 and the second pinch roll stand 91 with multiple spray nozzles 90 in the multiple rows of water spray assemblies arranged there between. Although it is not discernable in the view depicted in Figure 3, the rows of spray nozzles 90 extend substantially across the strip width or the cooling station width in a widthwise arrangement and are spaced apart along the length of the cooling station 97.Finally, the cooled hot rolled cast thin strip 21 is coiled in a coiler 92 of the apparatus. A shear at a shear station 98 cuts the strip periodically upstream of the coiler to form required length of strip for each coil.Further details of the twin roll caster described in relation to Figures 1-3 can be found in the specification of Chinese Patent Application No. 201780029304.2 in the name of the applicant and the disclosure in that specification is incorporated herein by cross-reference.The above-described embodiment of a twin roll caster and method are suitable for producing steel strip less than 3 mm, typically less than 2.5 mm, in thickness from a molten steel melt comprising by weight, C<0.6%, Si<0.3%, Mn<2.5%, Nb<0.1%, P<0.03%, S<0.0025%, soluble Al<0.01%, N<0.005%, Cu<0.4%and the remainder iron, impurities and inclusions. The term “impurities” means elements in the melt as an inevitable result of steelmaking practices or as a consequence of the feed materials for steelmaking. These tend to be non-metallic elements. Examples of impurities are N, P, S, and H. The term “inclusions” means compounds that form during steelmaking. Examples of “inclusions” include AlN and MnS.It is noted that the invention is not confined to this steel composition.The following Examples 1 and 2 and Comparative Example 1 were carried out on the apparatus described in relation to Figures 1-3.Example 1The molten steel in the following Examples had the following composition.C: 0.01 ~ 0.1%;Si: 0 ~ 0.50%;Mn: 0.2 ~ 1.50%;P: 0 ~ 0.02%;S: 0 ~ 0.0030%, andthe balance being Fe and impuritiesThe molten steel for the Example was produced in electric furnace steelmaking, VD furnace vacuum degassing, and LF refining and was heated to a casting temperature and supplied via a tundish and a transition piece into the molten pool of a twin-roll caster to form a cast strip with a thickness of 2.0 mm.The cast strip was passed successively through the three hot boxes 1#, 2#, and 3#with N2 protection to avoid excessive oxidation. The N2 flow rates were 1100 m3
