Abstract

In the present invention, without a manual, a user can appropriately perform initial setting of an electronic device without confusion. When the power source of an electronic device 1 is turned off in a state where a first guide image regarding initial setting is displayed on an electronic paper 14 and at least a second guide image is stored in a nonvolatile memory 12a, and then, the power source is turned on at the start of the first use of the electronic device 1, the second guide image is read from the nonvolatile memory 12a and the second guide image is displayed on the electronic paper 14 instead of the first guide image remained displayed when the power source was turned off. In this manner, when a user unpacks and takes out the electronic device 1, the user can confirm, without a manual, what to do first according to the first guide image that remains displayed, and also can confirm what to do next according to the second guide image displayed after the power source is turned on.

Description

Electronic device and guide image display method

[0001] The present invention relates to an electronic device and a guide image display method, and is particularly suitable for use in an electronic device having a function for displaying a guide image showing an initial setting procedure.

[0002] Generally, when using a newly introduced electronic device, various initial settings (kitting) must be performed on the electronic device. Conventionally, this type of initial setting has been performed manually by the user according to a paper manual included with the electronic device. However, including a paper manual increases the product cost. There is also the problem that the user may lose or discard the manual before completing the initial setting.

[0003] In contrast, online manuals are sometimes provided from websites with URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) specified by a two-dimensional code or the like attached to electronic devices. However, in such cases, a manual explaining how to view the online manual is typically included as an accessory. This requires the user to follow the manual and perform several steps before being able to view the online manual, which can be cumbersome.

[0004] Also known is a technology that displays an initial setup guide image when an electronic device is turned on for the first time (see, for example, Patent Documents 1 to 3). The video recorder described in Patent Document 1 provides an initial setup wizard that allows the user to perform initial setup in an interactive manner by following on-screen instructions when the device is turned on for the first time. The projector described in Patent Document 2 displays a setup guide video on the screen that shows how to perform initial setup when the device is turned on. The image forming device described in Patent Document 3 starts up in an unpacking mode that prohibits the operation of mechanical parts when the device is removed from its packaging and turned on, and displays guidance on the installation process, including unpacking, on a touch panel display.

[0005] Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2006-324744 Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2007-127728 Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2015-145958

[0006] The techniques described in Patent Documents 1 to 3 solve the problems associated with paper manuals and online manuals. However, users cannot know what settings to make and how to set them until they turn on the electronic device. If a paper manual is not included, the user may not realize that a guide image will be displayed when the electronic device is turned on. Furthermore, if there is something that needs to be done before turning on the electronic device, the user may be stuck because they do not know what it is.

[0007] The present invention has been made to solve such problems, and aims to enable users to properly perform initial setup of electronic devices without hesitation, even without a paper manual or an online manual.

[0008] In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, the electronic device of the present invention includes an electronic paper display on which displayed information does not disappear even when the power is turned off, a nonvolatile memory, and a control device that controls the electronic device, and the power of the electronic device is turned off in a state where a first guide image related to initial settings is displayed on the display and at least a second guide image is stored in the nonvolatile memory. When the power is turned on and the electronic device is in an operable state at the time of first use of the electronic device, the control device reads the second guide image from the nonvolatile memory and controls the display to display the second guide image in place of the first guide image.

[0009] According to the present invention configured as described above, the power supply is turned off while the first guide image related to the initial setup is displayed on the electronic paper display, so the first guide image remains displayed on the display even after the power supply is turned off. Therefore, for example, the electronic device can be delivered to a user with the first guide image still displayed on the display, and the user can check the first guide image when unpacking and removing the electronic device without needing a paper manual or online manual. Furthermore, when the electronic device is first used and the power supply is turned on and the device is operational, at least a second guide image is read from the non-volatile memory and displayed on the display, so the user can check at least the second guide image following the first guide image. As described above, according to the present invention, it is possible for a user to easily and appropriately perform the initial setup of an electronic device even without a paper manual or online manual.

[0011] An embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings. Fig. 1 is a diagram showing an example of the hardware configuration of an electronic device 1 according to this embodiment. As shown in Fig. 1, the electronic device 1 of this embodiment includes, as its hardware configuration, a control unit 11, a storage unit 12, an input unit 13, a display unit 14, a sensor unit 15, a communication unit 16, and a battery 17. With this hardware configuration, the electronic device 1 of this embodiment has the function of displaying a guide image showing the initial setup procedure.

[0012] The battery 17 is a battery that can be attached to or detached from the electronic device 1, and may be either a primary battery or a secondary battery. The electronic device 1 of this embodiment operates using the battery 17 as a power source. That is, when the battery 17 is attached to the electronic device 1, the power supply is conductive, and the electronic device 1 is in an operable state. On the other hand, when the battery 17 is removed from the electronic device 1, the power supply is not conductive, and the electronic device 1 is in an inoperable state.

[0013] The control unit 11 corresponds to a control device in the claims and is configured, for example, by a microcomputer equipped with a CPU, RAM, and ROM. The control unit 11 operates according to an operating system and programs stored in the storage unit 12, and controls the electronic device 1 using various data stored in the storage unit 12. This control of the electronic device 1 includes control related to the display processing of the guide image. In addition to the microcomputer, a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) or the like may be provided.

[0014] The storage unit 12 is configured with a computer-readable storage medium. For example, the storage unit 12 includes storage media such as ROM, RAM, and semiconductor memory. In addition to these, the storage unit 12 may also include a hard disk. The semiconductor memory or hard disk corresponds to the non-volatile memory in the claims, and is represented as non-volatile memory 12a in FIG. 2 described below.

[0015] The storage unit 12 stores various programs executed by the control unit 11. The storage unit 12 also stores various data, including data used in the processing of the control unit 11 and data generated during the processing. In this embodiment, data for at least the first and second guide images related to the initial setup of the electronic device 1 is pre-stored in the non-volatile memory 12a. "Pre-stored" means before the electronic device 1 is delivered to the user. The first guide image displayed on the electronic device 1 during initial setup is referred to as the "first," and the next guide image displayed is referred to as the "second." The image display areas of the non-volatile memory 12a may be designated as the first and second areas, with the guide image for the first area displayed first, followed by the guide image for the second area. Alternatively, the non-volatile memory 12a may be configured to display the guide image for the nth area after the guide image for the mth area (m and n are integers such that m ≠ n), and the guide image for the mth area may be designated the first guide image, and the guide image for the nth area may be designated the second guide image.

[0016] The first guide image is a guide image that prompts the user to insert the battery 17 into the electronic device 1. An example of the first guide image is shown in Figure 3. The second guide image is a guide image that prompts the user to install an application that includes a program for executing a guide process that guides the user through the subsequent steps of the initial setup. Figure 4 shows an example of the second guide image.

[0017] As shown in Fig. 4, the second guide image includes a two-dimensional code that records a uniform resource locator (URL) of a website where the application can be downloaded. A user can access the website with the specified URL by reading the two-dimensional code using a device such as a smartphone or tablet, and download and install the application. The application may be configured to automatically launch a guide process when the application is installed.

[0018] The input unit 13 is configured with operation input devices such as switches and buttons, and supplies data corresponding to user operation input to the control unit 11. Note that this embodiment can be applied regardless of the type of electronic device 1, and the input unit 13 may include a keyboard, a mouse, a touch panel, or the like instead of or in addition to switches, buttons, or the like. Also, the electronic device 1 may not be configured to include the input unit 13.

[0019] The display unit 14 is configured with an electronic paper display in which the displayed information does not disappear even when the power is turned off, and displays information in accordance with instructions input from the control unit 11. The electronic paper may be of any type, such as an electrophoretic type, an electronic liquid powder type, an electrowetting type, or a cholesteric liquid crystal type. In the following description, the display unit 14 may be referred to as electronic paper 14.

[0020] In this embodiment, before delivering the electronic device 1 to a user, the control unit 11 reads a first guide image related to initial setup from the nonvolatile memory 12a and displays it on the electronic paper 14, and then the battery 17 is removed. That is, the power supply to the electronic device 1 is turned off while the first guide image related to initial setup is displayed on the electronic paper 14 and at least a second guide image is stored in the nonvolatile memory 12a. As a result, the electronic device 1 is delivered to a user without the battery 17 installed in the electronic device 1 and with the first guide image still displayed on the electronic paper 14. Note that after the first guide image is displayed on the electronic paper 14, the data for the first guide image may be erased from the nonvolatile memory 12a before the battery 17 is removed.

[0021] The sensor unit 15 is composed of sensors that detect the state of the electronic device 1 and supplies information indicating the detected values to the control unit 11. For example, the sensor unit 15 includes a voltage sensor that detects the battery voltage, which is represented as voltage sensor 15a in FIG. 2 described below. The control unit 11 can detect that the battery 17 has been attached to the electronic device 1 by monitoring the battery voltage obtained from the sensor unit 15.

[0022] The communication unit 16 is configured by a communication module that exchanges data with a higher-level device (not shown) via wireless or wired communication means, and communicates with the higher-level device in accordance with instructions input from the control unit 11. For example, when performing initial setup of the electronic device 1, the communication unit 16 transmits data related to the electronic device 1 to the higher-level device, and receives data to be stored in the storage unit 12 from the higher-level device. The wireless communication means included in the communication unit 16 can be, for example, Bluetooth (registered trademark), BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), Wi-Fi (registered trademark), or other wireless LANs.

[0023] Fig. 2 is a block diagram showing an example of the functional configuration of the electronic device 1 according to this embodiment. As shown in Fig. 2, the electronic device 1 of this embodiment includes, as its functional configuration, a display control unit 111, a battery voltage acquisition unit 112, and an identification information recording unit 113. The processing of these functional blocks 111 to 113 is executed by the operation of a program stored in the storage unit 12 under the control of the control unit 11 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 also shows functional blocks related to the subject matter of this embodiment together with a portion of the hardware configuration.

[0024] The display control unit 111 controls the display of information on the electronic paper 14. For example, the display control unit 111 controls the reading of the first guide image and the second guide image from the nonvolatile memory 12a and the display of the first guide image on the electronic paper 14. As described above, before the electronic device 1 is delivered to a user, the display control unit 111 reads the first guide image illustrated in FIG. 3 from the nonvolatile memory 12a and displays it on the electronic paper 14. In this state, the battery 17 is removed from the electronic device 1, but the first guide image remains displayed on the electronic paper 14.

[0025] 4 from the non-volatile memory 12a, and controls the electronic paper 14 to display the second guide image in place of the first guide image that has been displayed, when the power is turned on and the electronic device 1 is in an operable state at the time of first use. The fact that the power is turned on and the electronic device 1 is in an operable state can be detected based on a change in the battery voltage acquired by the battery voltage acquisition unit 112 from the voltage sensor 15a.

[0026] The battery voltage acquisition unit 112 acquires the battery voltage detected by the voltage sensor 15a from the voltage sensor 15a. The display control unit 111 detects that the battery 17 has been installed in the electronic device 1 when the battery voltage acquisition unit 112 changes from a state in which it has not acquired a battery voltage from the voltage sensor 15a to a state in which it has acquired a battery voltage that is not zero. Then, upon detecting that the battery 17 has been installed in the electronic device 1, the display control unit 111 controls the electronic paper 14 to display a second guide image.

[0027] The user installs the application on a device such as a smartphone in accordance with the second guide image, and then continues the initial setup of the electronic device 1 in accordance with the guide process executed by the application. This allows the user to complete the initial setup procedure. The device on which the application is installed may be the device used as the upper device described above, or may be a different device.

[0028] After the initial settings of the electronic device 1 are complete, the display control unit 111 also executes a process of displaying various information on the electronic paper 14, including information received from a higher-level device via the communication unit 16 and information generated by the control unit 11 executing a program. Since the display control at this stage is not the subject of this embodiment, a detailed description thereof will be omitted.

[0029] The identification information recording unit 113 stores predetermined identification information in the non-volatile memory 12a after the display control unit 111 displays the second guide image on the electronic paper 14 when the electronic device 1 is first used. The identification information can be, for example, flag information indicating that the second guide image has been displayed. The display of the second guide image suggests that an application has been installed on the terminal thereafter and that the initial setup work has been completed. The flag information serves as information indicating that the initial setup has been performed.

[0030] The identification information is not limited to the above-described flash information. For example, when the initial setting of the electronic device 1 is completed by an application installed on the terminal, an identifier (ID) assigned to the electronic device 1 may be stored as identification information in the nonvolatile memory 12a. That is, the ID assigned to the electronic device 1 during the initial setting process may be transmitted from the terminal to the electronic device 1, and the identification information recording unit 113 may store this ID in the nonvolatile memory 12a. The ID of the electronic device 1 may be assigned by an application on the terminal, or may be assigned by a server device or the like connected to the terminal via a communication network.

[0031] When the battery 17 is installed in the electronic device 1 and the electronic device 1 is in an operable state, the display control unit 111 determines whether or not identification information is stored in the nonvolatile memory 12a. If it is determined that identification information is not stored in the nonvolatile memory 12a, the display control unit 111 executes a process of reading the second guide image from the nonvolatile memory 12a and displaying it on the electronic paper 14. On the other hand, if it is determined that identification information is stored in the nonvolatile memory 12a, the display control unit 111 does not execute a process of reading the second guide image from the nonvolatile memory 12a and displaying it on the electronic paper 14. As a result, the second guide image is displayed on the electronic paper 14 only when the delivered electronic device 1 is unpacked and the battery 17 is installed for the first time, and the second guide image is not displayed on the electronic paper 14 when the battery 17 is subsequently replaced.

[0032] In addition, if the identification information is configured to be stored in the non-volatile memory 12a when the initial settings of the electronic device 1 are completed by an application installed on the terminal, the second guide image will be displayed on the electronic paper 14 when the delivered electronic device 1 is unpacked and the battery 17 is first installed, and also when the battery 17 is removed before the initial settings are completed and then installed again.

[0033] 5 is a flowchart showing an example of the operation of the electronic device 1 configured as described above. Here, the processing before delivery of the electronic device 1 has already been executed, and the flow of processing executed after delivery of the electronic device 1 is shown. In other words, the processing of the flowchart shown in FIG. 5 starts when the battery 17 is attached to the electronic device 1.

[0034] First, the display control unit 111 detects that the battery 17 has been installed in the electronic device 1 when the battery voltage acquisition unit 112 acquires a non-zero battery voltage value from the voltage sensor 15a (step S1). Upon detecting the installation of the battery 17, the display control unit 111 determines whether predetermined identification information is stored in the non-volatile memory 12a (step S2).

[0035] If it is determined that no identification information is stored in the non-volatile memory 12a, the initial setup of the electronic device 1 has not yet been performed, and the display control unit 111 reads the second guide image from the non-volatile memory 12a and displays it on the electronic paper 14 (step S3). At this time, the first guide image that had been displayed on the electronic paper 14 is replaced with the second guide image. This ends the processing of the flowchart shown in FIG. 5. In this case, the user can install an application on a device such as a smartphone in accordance with the second guide image and complete the initial setup of the electronic device 1 by following the guide process executed by the application.

[0036] On the other hand, if it is determined in step S2 that the identification information is stored in the non-volatile memory 12a, this corresponds to a simple battery replacement, and the processing of the flowchart shown in Fig. 5 is terminated without performing the processing of step S3. In this case, the information displayed on the electronic paper 14 before the battery 17 was removed from the electronic device 1 for battery replacement remains displayed on the electronic paper 14. This prevents the second guide image prompting the user to install an application from being displayed at an unnecessary time.

[0037] If it is determined that the identification information is stored in the non-volatile memory 12a, the display control unit 111 may display information related to the battery voltage acquired by the battery voltage acquisition unit 112 on the electronic paper 14. For example, information indicating the remaining battery level may be displayed based on the acquired battery voltage. The information indicating the remaining battery level may be, for example, an image indicating that the remaining battery level is sufficient, as shown in FIG. 6(a), or an image indicating that the remaining battery level is insufficient, as shown in FIG. 6(b). This image indicating the remaining battery level may be stored in the non-volatile memory 12a in advance, for example, before the electronic device 1 is delivered. Alternatively, an image together with the ID of the electronic device 1 may be transmitted from the terminal to the electronic device 1 during the initial setup process, and stored in the non-volatile memory 12a.

[0038] As described above in detail, in this embodiment, before the electronic device 1 is delivered to a user, a first guide image (a guide image encouraging the user to install the battery 17) regarding the initial setup of the electronic device 1 is displayed on the electronic paper 14, and at least a second guide image (an image encouraging the user to install an application for the initial setup) is stored in the non-volatile memory 12a. Then, the battery 17 is removed to turn off the power supply to the electronic device 1. As a result, the electronic device 1 is delivered to a user with the first guide image still displayed on the electronic paper 14. Thereafter, when the display control unit 111 of the control unit 11 detects that the battery 17 has been installed and the electronic device 1 is ready for operation at the start of initial use of the electronic device 1, the display control unit 111 reads the second guide image from the non-volatile memory 12a and displays it on the electronic paper 14.

[0039] With the electronic device 1 of this embodiment configured as described above, when a user unpacks the delivered electronic device 1, even without a paper manual or online manual, the user can see the first guide image on the electronic paper 14 and recognize that they should first install the battery 17 in the electronic device 1. After following the guide and installing the battery 17, the second guide image is read from the non-volatile memory 12a and displayed on the electronic paper 14, enabling the user to recognize that they should then install an application on the terminal. After following the guide and installing and launching the application on the terminal, a guide process is executed, allowing the user to complete the initial setup by following the guide process. Thus, according to this embodiment, it is possible to enable a user to easily and appropriately perform the initial setup of the electronic device 1, even without a paper manual or online manual.

[0040] The identification information recording unit 113 may erase the identification information stored in the non-volatile memory 12a from the non-volatile memory 12a when a predetermined event is triggered. The predetermined event may be, for example, a user's operation on the input unit 13, a command from an application installed on the terminal, or detection that the electronic device 1 has been unused for a certain period of time. However, the second guide image is not erased from the non-volatile memory 12a. As a result, when the user inserts the battery 17 after erasing the identification information, the second guide image is displayed on the electronic paper 14 again.

[0041] In the above embodiment, the first guide image is used to prompt the user to install the battery 17, but the present invention is not limited to this. For example, if the electronic device 1 has a power switch, the first guide image may be an image that prompts the user to turn on the power switch after installing the battery 17. Furthermore, if the electronic device 1 is configured to use a commercial power source instead of the battery 17, the first guide image may be an image that prompts the user to plug the power cable into an outlet and turn on the power switch.

[0042] In the above embodiment, the second guide image is stored in the non-volatile memory 12a, and the second guide image prompts the user to install an application. However, this is not limiting. For example, not only the second guide image but also the third and subsequent guide images may be stored in the non-volatile memory 12a, and the nth (n>2) guide image may prompt the user to install an application. In this case, the display control unit 111 detects that a predetermined process has been performed in accordance with the second guide image and displays the third guide image on the electronic paper 14. Furthermore, the display control unit 111 detects that a predetermined process has been performed in accordance with the third guide image and displays the fourth guide image on the electronic paper 14. This process is repeated until the nth guide image is displayed. Alternatively, the display control unit 111 may provide guidance up to the final step of the initial setup process using only images pre-stored in the non-volatile memory 12a, without prompting the user to install an application.

[0043] In the above embodiment, the control unit 11 may obtain the battery voltage from the voltage sensor 15a when it detects that the battery 17 has been attached to the electronic device 1, and thereafter at predetermined intervals (e.g., every 30 minutes) to determine whether the battery voltage is below a threshold, and if it is determined to be below the threshold, display an image on the electronic paper 14 indicating that the remaining battery power is insufficient. By lengthening the interval at which the control unit 11 obtains the battery voltage from the voltage sensor 15a, it is possible to reduce battery consumption. Since it is unlikely that the battery voltage will change significantly within 30 minutes, this is not a problem in terms of actual specifications.

[0044] Furthermore, control unit 11 may transmit information about the battery voltage obtained from voltage sensor 15a to a higher-level device via communication unit 16. Furthermore, electronic device 1 may be configured to include an LED or a buzzer, and control unit 11 may blink or light the LED or sound the buzzer when it is determined that the battery voltage obtained from voltage sensor 15a is equal to or lower than a threshold. Furthermore, control unit 11 may be configured not to update the screen when it is determined that the battery voltage obtained from voltage sensor 15a is equal to or lower than a threshold, as a measure to prevent malfunction due to a voltage drop during screen updating.

[0045] In the above embodiment, an image relating to the remaining battery level may be displayed on the electronic paper 14 together with the ID by performing a predetermined operation, such as continuing to press the push switch of the input unit 13 for a predetermined time. Also, depending on the operation content, such as pressing the push switch of the input unit 13 once, pressing it twice in succession, pressing it three times in succession, or pressing and holding it for one second, any information associated with each operation content may be displayed on the electronic paper 14.

[0046] In the above embodiment, the sensor unit 15 includes the voltage sensor 15a. However, the present invention is not limited to this. For example, the sensor unit 15 may include a temperature sensor in addition to the voltage sensor 15a. The temperature sensor detects the ambient temperature or the internal temperature of the electronic device 1.

[0047] The display control unit 111 may acquire the detected temperature from the temperature sensor upon detecting that the battery 17 has been installed in the electronic device 1, and thereafter at predetermined intervals (e.g., every 30 minutes), for example, to determine whether the temperature is below a threshold value (e.g., 10 degrees), and control the screen flashing operation (the operation of switching from a black screen to a white screen) according to the result of the determination. By lengthening the interval at which the control unit 11 acquires the detected temperature from the temperature sensor, it is possible to reduce battery consumption. Since it is unlikely that the temperature will change significantly within 30 minutes, this is not a problem in terms of actual specifications.

[0048] The display control unit 111 executes a flash operation as a countermeasure against image retention before updating the screen of the electronic paper 14. For example, if the temperature detected by the temperature sensor is higher than a threshold, the flash operation is performed once. On the other hand, if the detected temperature is equal to or lower than the threshold, the flash operation is performed twice as a countermeasure against image retention. This makes it possible to suppress image retention by flashing twice at low temperatures, and to shorten the time required for screen updating by flashing once under normal conditions.

[0049] The control unit 11 may also transmit information about the detected temperature obtained from the temperature sensor to a higher-level device via the communication unit 16. The electronic device 1 may also be configured to include an LED or a buzzer, and the control unit 11 may blink or light the LED or sound the buzzer when it determines that the detected temperature obtained from the temperature sensor is equal to or lower than a threshold. The detected temperature may also be displayed on the electronic paper 14 together with the ID by a predetermined operation, such as pressing and holding a push switch on the input unit 13 for a predetermined period of time.

[0050] Here, the time interval for determining the threshold value of the battery voltage detected by the voltage sensor 15a and the temperature detected by the temperature sensor is set to every 30 minutes, but this is not limiting. For example, it may be every hour or every 15 minutes. Note that while a longer time interval can further reduce battery consumption, an appropriate value should be set to prevent malfunction.

[0051] Furthermore, the control unit 11 may transmit the identification information stored in the nonvolatile memory 12a to the higher-level device via the communication unit 16. Based on this identification information, an application installed in the higher-level device may notify the user that the initial setup work has been completed in the electronic device 1.

[0052] Furthermore, the above-described embodiments are merely examples of specific embodiments for carrying out the present invention, and the technical scope of the present invention should not be construed as being limited thereby. In other words, the present invention can be carried out in various forms without departing from the gist or main characteristics thereof.
