Description

[0001] FISHING LURE, KIT OF PARTS AND METHOD OF INSERTING OR REMOVING A WEIGHT

[0002] Technical Field

[0003] Embodiments relate to a fishing lure, a kit of a parts and a method of inserting or removing a weight.

[0004] Background

[0005] A relatively recent development in recreational fishing is the use of forwardfacing sonar to help detect the presence of fish, and to adjust the fishing technique accordingly. The term “forward-facing sonar” is used to distinguish over traditional sonar which was directed downwards from the boat, and is usually used to determine water depth. Despite this terminology, forward-facing sonar may, in certain implementations, be directed to the sides and behind the boat. One such product is sold under the trade mark LiveScope™.

[0006] Known fishing lures may be made from flexible or non-flexible material such as plastic formed to resemble the shape of bait fish or other fish prey. The lures are shaped and weighted to mimic the swimming motion of prey to thereby attract fish. In this respect, the location of the weight relative to a body of the lure may influence the swimming motion of the lure.

[0007] Lead or other relatively dense materials are often used for the weight and it is known that the lead or other material can render the lure visible on the forward-facing sonar.

[0050] Detailed Description of Specific Embodiment

[0051] Embodiments extend to a lure formed with two or more cavities into which a user may insert weights, and then remove those weights, as desired. Therefore, embodiments may provide the user with a lure where the user is able to select a weight distribution. Since the weight distribution is, at least to a limited extent, selectable by the user, the user may be able to tailor a swimming motion of the lure as desired.

[0052] The cavities may be spaced to allow a hook or other rigging to pass through the body between cavities, and where applicable, corresponding weights. The hook and the cavities may be orientated substantially along a medial line of the lure. This may allow a user to rig the lure and tailor the swimming motion without deleteriously affecting the swimming motion.

[0053] The cavities may be accessible via channels formed between openings formed in a surface of the lure and the cavities. The interface between the channels and the cavities (for example, a shoulder) may impede the passage of the weight from the cavity out through the channel. Alternatively, or in addition, the channel may be formed with a bend or other non-linear path which may act to impede passage of the weight from the cavity out through the channel. This may help to ensure that the weights are retained in the cavities during use of the lure, thereby preventing unwanted loss of the weights.

[0054] The openings in the surface of the body of the lure through which the weights are inserted or removed may be formed on a dorsal side and / or on a ventral side. In an embodiment, all of the openings are formed on the dorsal side. Since, during use, the dorsal side of the lure generally points upwards, when the openings on the dorsal side, gravity may act to retain the weights in the cavities rather than encouraging the weights to fall out of the lure.

[0055] In an embodiment, the body of the lure may be formed from a flexible plastic such as PCV or TPE. In a further embodiment, the body may be formed from both flexible and inflexible material, with portions of the body defining the channels and cavities formed form a flexible material.

[0056] The body may comprise an inner core and a portion surrounding the inner core wherein the inner core is comprised of an inner core material and the surrounding portion is comprised of a surrounding portion material wherein the inner core material has a greater density than the surrounding portion material. At least a portion of each of the channels may formed in the inner core and a further portion of each of the channels is formed in the surrounding portion.

[0057] Having two materials with different densities, particularly where they are both flexible materials, may allow a user to insert a weight into a cavity through a channel by deforming the surrounding portion. The inner core, being of a denser and less flexible material, may potentially help to secure the weight in place.

[0058] Furthermore, at least a portion of each of the channels may be formed in the inner core and a further portion of each of the channels may be formed in the surrounding portion. The difference in densities (and therefore flexibilities of the materials) may provide an interface fit between the materials of different densities.

[0059] In addition or instead, the size of the weight, channel and cavity may be chosen to help contain the weight in the cavity during normal use of the core.

[0060] In an embodiment, the size of the weight may be smaller than the corresponding cavity and the channel may be smaller than the corresponding cavity, thereby potentially acting to secure the weight in place in the cavity.

[0061] In certain embodiments, the body of the lure comprises TPE. It has been found that TPE may have a specific adhesion to the weights, particularly if the weights are made from a metal such as tungsten. This adhesion may help to retain the weights in place during use of the lure thereby avoiding loss of the weights during use.

[0062] In certain embodiments, it may be beneficial to provide the surface of the weights with a texture. A texture may increase the friction between the surface of the weight and the surface of the body forming the cavity, thereby potentially assisting in retaining the weight in place. Various technics such as painting, etching (whether through chemical or other means), blasting, sanding, grinding or other known methods may be used to provide a surface of the weight with a texture. For example, diamond sanding where weights are placed in a big tub and get mixed with a diamond coated sanding machine may be used.

[0063] An embodiment is described with reference to Figures 1 to 6 which illustrate a fishing lure 10 according to an embodiment. The lure 10 comprises a body 12 which, in this embodiment, is shaped as a fish with a head 14 and a tail 16. Dashed line 18 illustrated in Figure 1 is an imaginary medial line which, in this embodiment, divides the lure 12 into left and right halves along an axis of symmetry which passes through the head 14 and the tail 16.

[0064] The body 12 has a dorsal side 20 and a ventral side 22, as illustrated in Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5. The body 12 has an interior 24 and a surface 26. The interior 24 of lure 10 is not illustrated in Figures 1 to 6, but is shown in Figures 7 to 16.

[0065] Referring to Figure 2, the body 12 of the lure 10 is formed with six generally spherical shaped cavities 28A, 28B, 28C, 28D, 28E and 28F formed in the interior of the body 12 of the lure. Each cavity has a corresponding channel 30A, 30B, 30C, 30D, 30E and 30F formed in the interior of the body 12. In this embodiment, each of the cavities 28A, 28B, 28C, 28D, 28E and 28F has a corresponding spherical weight 32A, 32B, 32C, 32D, 32E and 32F inserted therein.

[0066] In Figures 1 to 6 the weights are shown in cross-section which hatching illustrating the solid nature of the weights. However, it is to be realised that this is for illustration purposes only and the interior of the weights and, in fact the weights and cavities themselves are not generally visible through the lure unless the body has been made of a transparent material. Even then, the weights would not generally be visible in cross-section.

[0067] As illustrated in Figure 6, the surface 26 of the body 12 of the lure 10 is formed with openings 34A, 34B, 34C, 34D, 34E and 34F, each opening corresponding to a respective channel and cavity so that a weight may be inserted into, or removed from, a cavity via the corresponding channel and opening, as described in further detail below with reference to Figures 7 to 16. As illustrated in further detail in Figure 1, the cavity 28A has a diameter 28AD and the channel 30A has a width 30Aw. The diameter of the cavity 28AD is larger than the width of the channel 30Aw so that a shoulder 36 formed between the cavity 28A and the channel 30A acts to prevent the weight 32A located in the cavity 28A from falling out through the channel 30A.

[0068] In this embodiment, the cavity diameter 28AD is 3.0 mm and the width of the channel 30Aw is 1 mm. The diameter of a ball sized weight 32A is 4.5 mm. In this embodiment, the other weights, channels and cavities have the same, corresponding sizes

[0069] The body 12 is formed from a flexible plastics material which, in this embodiment, is TPE. The weight 32A may therefore be retained in the cavity 28A by the tendency of the material forming the channel 30A to avoid deformation, such deformation being required to insert the weight 32A into the cavity 28A, as described in further detail below.

[0070] In this embodiment, the body 12 is formed with an inner core 44 and a surrounding portion 46. The surrounding portion 46 encapsulates the inner core 44. As illustrated in Figure 2, the cavities 28A, ... 28F and a portion of the channels 30A, ..., 30F are formed in the inner core 44.

[0071] Both the inner core 44 and the surrounding portion 46 are made from TPE. However the density of the material of the inner core 44 is greater than the density of the surrounding portion 46. It is to be realised that the density of the material of the inner core and the density of the material of the surrounding portion may be chosen depending on the size of the lure. In this embodiment, the inner core is made from a 7 degree TPE and the surrounding portion is made from a 5 degree TPE.

[0072] Since a portion of the channels 30A, ..., 30F is made from the inner core material and a portion is made from the surrounding portion material, the difference in density creates an interference where the two materials meet and this may help to prevent the weights from moving back along the channels once inserted during use of the lure.

[0073] As illustrated in Figure 6, the openings 34A, 34B, 34C, 34D, 34E and 34F are formed in the surface 26 of the body 12 of the lure 10 on the dorsal (or upper) portion of the body 12. It is to be realised that the openings may also be formed in the ventral (lower or belly) portion of the lure. A further embodiment may include openings formed in both ventral and dorsal sides. A further embodiment may include at least one opening formed at a location spaced from both ventral and dorsal sides.

[0074] The cavities 28A, ... 28F are located along the medial line 18 and therefore the weights 32A, ... 32F are also, when inserted into the respective cavities 28A, ... 28F, located along the medial line 18. A user is able to select into which cavities weights are to be inserted. Since the weight distribution may affect the motion of the lure through the water it may be desirable to restrict the weight distribution along the medial line to avoid movement of the lure which does not simulate a swimming motion. It may be generally desirable to have the lure simulate a bait fish in both appearance and behaviour to improve the effectiveness of the lure in catching fish.

[0075] By selecting the cavities into which weights are inserted, a user may be able to offset the weight of a jighead e.g. where the jighead sees all the weight placed at the head. By having the tungsten balls distributed along the body it may be possible to counterbalance the weight on the head to simulate a natural falling motion of the lure, and also allow more natural action of the lure when the lure is moved e.g. by action of a fishing rod. The weights may be adjusted so that the lure falls essentially level, slightly head down or even slightly tail down, instead of falling directly head first. This may present a more natural looking lure and thus may catch more fish.

[0076] It is to be realised that the medial line need not lie along an axis of symmetry, particularly if the lure simulates an asymmetrical bait. In an embodiment, the medial line is chosen to potentially optimise swimming motion of the lure when weights are placed in the cavities.

[0077] The weights 32A, ... 32F are spherical in the embodiment shown, but it is to be realised that a shape approximating a sphere may be used instead. In a further embodiment, the weight may be ovoid, cuboid, or shaped as another polyhedron.

[0078] In this embodiment, the weights 32A, ... 32F are made from tungsten. An advantage of certain embodiments may be that tungsten weights improve the visibility of the lure on sonar. Other materials may be used instead for the weights such as a tungsten alloy, lead, or, in certain embodiments, any material denser than lead.

[0079] Further, in this embodiment, the weights 32A, ..., 32F are formed with a texture on the surface of the weight. In this embodiment, the texture is formed by sand blasting the weights, but other methods of forming textures may be used instead. In use, a user may rig the lure 10 with a hook (not shown) by passing the hook through the body 12 of the lure. Generally, it may be desirable to orientate the hook along the medial line 18. Since the hook is connected to the line, and forces on the line are transmitted through the line, the orientation of the hook relative to the lure may affect the swimming motion of the lure.

[0080] As the cavities 28A, ..., 28F are spaced from one another, the spaces between cavities and, if occupied by weights, between the weights, provide space for the hook to pass through the lure 10. The lure 10 is provided with a ventral guide 38 on the ventral side 40 (Figure 1) and a dorsal guide 40 on the dorsal side 20 in the form of an elongate rectangular depression formed in the body of the lure. In use, a user inserts the hook into one of the guides, passes the hook through the lure, ensuring that the hook passes out through the opposing guide. In this manner the guides may help the user to orientate the hook on or near the medial line 18.

[0081] With reference to Figures 7 to 12 a method of installing a weight into a lure is described. Figures 7 to 12 illustrate a lure 100. The lure 100 is similar to the lure 10 illustrated in Figures 1 to 6 and described above and the same reference numerals are used to denote like parts. Figure 7 additionally illustrates an applicator 102. In this embodiment, the applicator 102 is a stainless steel tube having an upper opening 104 and a lower opening 106.

[0082] As shown in Figure 7, the lower opening 106 of the applicator 102 is engaged with the opening 34F corresponding to channel 30F and cavity 28F. A leading edge of the lower opening 106 is inserted into the opening 34F and this causes the surrounding portion material and the inner core material of the interior 24 of the body 12 of the lure 100 forming the channel 30F to deform, as illustrated in Figure 8.

[0083] Once the user realises that the applicator 102 cannot be pushed further into the channel 30F, they introduce the weight 32F into the upper opening 104 of the applicator 102 (Figure 10). In this embodiment, the user then orientates the lure and applicator so that the force of gravity acts on the weight 32F to pull the weight 32F down into the cavity 28F, as shown in Figure 11.

[0084] In Figures 9, 10 and 11, the applicator 102 is shown with the lower opening 106 of the applicator 102 in line with an upper portion of the cavity 28F. It is to be realised that in practice, the position of the applicator 102 relative to the cavity 28F will depend on a number of factors such as the force with which a user inserts the applicator 102 into the lure. In a further embodiment, the user may insert the applicator 102 a different depth into the lure so that the applicator is higher or lower than shown. In an embodiment, the applicator 102 will take the same position shown in Figures 14 and 15.

[0085] In a further embodiment, means other than gravity may be used to cause the weight 32F to travel in the applicator 102. In an embodiment, compressed gas is used.

[0086] Once the weight 32F has been located in the cavity 28F, the applicator 102 is removed, leaving the weight 32F located in the cavity 28F, as shown in Figure 12.

[0087] Removing the weight 32F from the cavity 28F involves a similar process in reverse and is illustrated in Figures 13 to 16. Figure 13 illustrates the lure 100 with the weight 32F located in the cavity 28F. The user inserts the lower opening 106 of the applicator 102 into the channel 30F by deforming the surrounding portion material and the inner core material of the interior 24 of the body 12 of the lure 100 until the lower opening 106 engages with the cavity and the weight 32F enters the lower opening 106 of the applicator 102, as illustrated in Figures 14 and 15.

[0088] The user will then turn the lure 100 and applicator 102 upside down so that gravity acts to remove the weight 32F from the cavity 28F, as shown in Figure 16. The applicator 102 is then removed from the lure 100.

[0089] In the embodiment shown, the applicator 102 is a tube and the weights 32A, ... 32F are spherical. It is to be realised that the applicator may be shaped to suit the shape of the weights, and where differently-shaped weights are used, the applicator will be adapted accordingly.

[0090] It is to be realised that, in certain embodiments, it may not be necessary to use the applicator to insert or remove the weights.

[0091] Figures 17 and 18 illustrate a lure 200 according to a further embodiment. The lure 200 comprises a body 212 having an interior 224 and a surface 226. Two cavities 228A and 228B are formed in the interior 224 of the body 212 of the lure 200. Respective channels 230A and 23B join openings 234A and 234B formed at the surface 226 of the body 212 to corresponding cavities 228A and 228B.

[0092] The body 212 of the lure 200 is formed from a flexible material, in this embodiment TPE, and spherical weights (not shown in Figures 17 and 18) may be inserted into, or removed from, the cavities 228A and 228B with the use of an applicator in the manner described above with reference to Figures 7 to 18, or without the use of an applicator, by deforming the material of the body 212 of the lure 200.

[0093] The lure 200 includes a non-removable weight 240 which is here provided in addition to the manually removable weights which may be located in the cavities 228A and 228B.

[0094] In further embodiments a lure may be provided with encased weights which are encased in the body of the lure, and are not insertable or removable by a user.

[0095] Embodiments may be provided as a kit of parts. In an embodiment, the kit of parts includes a lure as herein described and a set of weights for insertion into, and removal from, the lure. The lure may be provided with one or more of the weights preinstalled. For example the lure may have three or four weights pre-installed. In a further embodiment, the kit of parts further comprises an adaptor. In a further embodiment, the kit of parts comprises a lure as herein described and an a adaptor as herein described.
