Abstract
Description
[0001] DESCRIPTION
[0002] MUON ALTIMETER
[0003] Technical Field
[0004] The invention relates to an altimeter, which measures altitude by utilizing the detection of muons, which are subatomic particles, in greater numbers as one ascends to a certain height in the atmosphere.
[0005] State of the Art
[0006] Altimeters are used to measure the height of a user or a vehicle above the ground in areas such as aviation and mountaineering. In today's technology, altitude is measured using atmospheric pressure measurement, radar technology or global positioning system to measure altitude above the ground. Therefore, altitude meters are divided into pressure altimeter, radar altimeter and global positioning system altimeter.
[0007] Pressure altimeters measure the height above sea level. The working principle is that the pressure created by the air coming from a hole that takes air is detected by the pressure sensor inside.
[0008] Radar altimeters measure the height above the ground. The working principle is that the radar waves given to the ground can be measured using the time it takes to hit the ground, reflect and return, and the speed of light.
[0009] Global positioning system altimeters can measure both sea level and ground altitude. The working principle of the global positioning system altimeter is to measure the distance of the satellites from the regular radio signals emitted by three or more artificial satellites and to calculate the position by finding the intersection of these distances globally.
[0010] There are some problems with existing altimeters. The problems with pressure altimeters are that they cannot measure the height above the ground and that constant calibration is required depending on changing air temperatures. The problems with radar altimeters are that they cannot measure the height above sea level and that a license is required. The problems with global positioning systems are that they are less accurate than other types and that when these altimeters are used, they are dependent on a global positioning system.
[0011] Nowadays, due to such problems, it is necessary to always aim for the better, so it is indispensable to conduct new studies on the subject.
[0012] Purpose and Brief Description of the Invention
[0013] The purpose of the invention is to measure altitude using muons in the atmosphere. The aim of the invention is to provide convenience and security.
[0014] In our invention, the muons released in the atmosphere decrease until they reach the ground due to their short life and this decrease is used to measure altitude and therefore, the altitude is measured more easily and more safely.
[0015] Cosmic rays coming from space hit the Earth's atmosphere and create subatomic particles called muons. These muons are formed at an altitude of about 20 km from the atmosphere and descend from the atmosphere to the surface. Some of the muons decay as they descend to the surface and cannot reach the surface. For this reason, the number of muons detected increases as the altitude above sea level increases. At sea level, on average, there is 1 muon per cubic centimeter per second. The number of muons detected increases as we ascend above sea level.
[0016] In our invention, Geiger-Muller tubes that can detect muons are used as muon detectors. The muons that hit these tubes are counted every second with the help of a microcontroller circuit. The counted number is sent to the main system once a second and the main system calculates the altitude from the number of muons hitting these tubes every second. The calculated altitude above sea level is displayed in meters on the screen of the main system.
[0017] For altitude measurement above ground level, the calibration button must be pressed at the reference altitude. For altitude measurement above sea level, the reset button must be pressed.

[0038] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0039] The invention relates to an altimeter that can be used to measure altitude easily and safely by taking advantage of the fact that the number of detections of muons, which are subatomic particles formed in the earth's atmosphere, increases with increasing altitude. The muons formed in the atmosphere and coming towards the ground enter through the transparent window (7) in the sensor system and hit the Geiger-Muller tubes on the sensor circuit board (12) where the Geiger-Muller tubes are located and produce signals. The generated signals are sent and process to circuit board that counts and sends the number of muons coming to the Geiger Muller tubes. The counting data is sent from the data output unit (9) to the data input unit (5) of the main system. Counting data coming from the main system, altitude above sea level calculation and altitude above ground level calculation are made on circuit board where incoming data is processed (11) and the relevant data goes to circuit board acting as display screen (10). The relevant data is displayed on the display screen (2) in an appropriate manner. The ground level altitude reset operation can be performed using the calibration button (3) at the ground level where the altitude is desired to be measured. The energy of the main system is supplied from its own electrical connection of the main system (4). The energy of the sensor system is supplied from the electrical connection of the sensor system (8). The components of the main system are attached to its main system body (1). The components of the sensor system are attached to its body of the sensor system (6).
