Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be comprised below. A definition of a term is consistent throughout the description unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.
[0032] As mentioned previously, a wired communication between the teach pendant unit and the mobile device such as phone or tablet is troublesome and inconvenient. A wireless communication between them may be considered to tackle the above problem.
[0033] Besides, it should be ensured that the mobile device should not be far away from the teach pendant unit according to the safety requirements. That is to say, the mobile device and the teach pendant unit cannot be physically separated. Specially, in a risky scenario, the mobile device such as phone or tablet is held by the first person while the teach pendant unit is held by the second person control the phone or the tablet. The user would be more likely to operate the mobile device than the teach pendent unit because the mobile device has better user interface such as screen and joystick. However, if an emergency circumstance occurs, since the mobile device is not equipped with stop and enabling button, the first person cannot stop the robot in time, which would be quite dangerous and is not allowed by safety regulations. Therefore, it is required to make the communication between the teach pendant unit and the mobile device to be disconnected quickly as soon as they are physically disconnected.
[0034] At least to address the problem existed in the conventional approaches, the present disclosure proposes a solution for the robot which allows the communication between the teach pendant unit and the mobile device to be disconnected as soon as they are apart from each other.
[0035] Example embodiments will be described in more detail hereinafter in accordance with Figs. 1-6. With reference to Fig. 1 at first, which illustrates a schematic diagram of a robotic system 1 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0036] As illustrated in Fig. 1, the robotic system 1 includes a robot 10. The robot 10 may be an industrial robot, a collaborative robot or an autonomous mobile robot, AMR, etc. The specific types of the robot 10 are not limited in this regard. The robot 10 may be designed to control a tool (not shown) on a mechanical arm to carry out a variety of actions, for example, a machining operation such as milling operation, a grinding operation, etc. The specific types of the actions carried out by the robot 10 are not limited in this regard. As shown in Fig. 1, the robot 10 is communicatively coupled to a robot controller 12 and the robot controller 12 is configured to manipulate the movement of the mechanical arm according to the predetermined instructions. The communication interaction between the robot controller 12 and the robot 10 may be in a wired manner. With the help of the robot controller 12, the tool mounted to the mechanical arm may be driven to a desired position to carry out a predetermined action.
[0037] As shown in Fig. 1, the robotic system 1 further includes a teaching system 20 coupled to the robot controller 12. By operating the teaching system 20, the user may teach the robot 10 to perform a desired or a predetermined action.
[0038] Fig. 2 illustrates a perspective view of the teaching system 20 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown, the teaching system 20 generally includes a teach pendant unit 21, also referred to as TPU or a safety controller, and a mobile device 22. The mobile device 22 may be a mobile phone, a laptop, or a tablet. It is to be understood that the specific type of the mobile device 22 listed herein is only for illustration without suggesting any limitations as to the scope of the subject matter described here, and the mobile device 22 may be of any other suitable type, depending on individual requirement from the user. In some example embodiments, the teach pendant unit 21 may include an enabling button 25 to allow the user to start the robot 10. The teach pendant unit 21 may also include a stop button 26 to allow the user to stop the robot 10 if an emergency circumstance occurs. Therefore, the safety regulations can be satisfied.
[0039] As shown in Fig. 2, the teach pendant unit 21 has no joystick or screen, while the mobile device 22 normally has joystick or screen for better user interaction. Therefore, in order to ensure that the user can use the mobile device 22 to control the robot the stable communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 is important. If such a communication is established, the user may use the mobile device 22, especially the screen and joystick of the mobile device 22 to teach the robot 10.
[0040] As discussed previously, since the mobile device 22 is not equipped with an enabling button 25 or a stop button 26 as the teach pendant unit 21, it is needed to make the communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 to be disconnected quickly or to prevent the mobile device 22 from controlling the teach pendant unit 21 as soon as they are physically disconnected, so as to meet the safety requirements.
[0041] As shown in Fig. 2 the teach pendant unit 21 for use with the mobile device 22 includes a housing 23 to contain the components inside. The teach pendant unit 21 also includes a RFID tag 24, also known as radio frequency identification tag, which is attached on a surface of the housing 23 or provided within the housing 23. The mobile device 22 may include a NFC module (also known as near-field communication) to detect the RFID tag 24 in real time. With the help of the RFID tag 24 attached in the teach pendant unit 21, the NFC module of mobile device 22 is allowed to detect the RFID tag 24. In this way, a wireless communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 may be established in response to determine that the RFID tag 24 is detected by the NFC module of the mobile device 22. The wireless communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 may be achieved via a variety of communication technology including, but not limited to, Wi-Fi, NFC, or Bluetooth technology.
[0042] According to example embodiments of the present disclosure, the NFC module embedded in the mobile device 22 may recognize the RFID tag 24 embedded in the teach pendant unit 21 to establish a wireless communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 if the mobile device 22 and the teach pendant unit 21 is close to each other. After the wireless communication between the mobile device 22 and the teach pendant unit 21 is established, an app loaded in the mobile device 22 may be initiated to allow the user to operate the mobile device 22 to teach the robot 10.
[0043] In some example embodiments, since the effective communication distance between the RFID tag 24 and the NFC module is quite limited, therefore, if the mobile device 22 is far away from the teach pendant unit 21 to exceed such effective communication distance, the wireless communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 will be disconnected. In other words, the RFID tag 24 is configured to allow the mobile device 22 to disconnect the wireless communication from the teach pendant unit 21 when it is determined that the RFID tag 24 is not detect by the mobile device 22.
[0044] In this way, the wireless communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 can be disconnected quickly as soon as they are physically disconnected, when the RFID tag 24 is not detect by the mobile device 22, for example, when the distance between the RFID tag 24 and the mobile device 22 is determined to be greater than a predetermined distance. Alternatively, it is also possible to prevent the mobile device 22 from controlling the teach pendant unit 21 if teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 are physically disconnected. For example, once teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 are physically disconnected, the RFID tag 24 at the teach pendant unit 21 may prohibit the access permission of the mobile device 22 to the teach pendant unit 21, making it impossible for the mobile device 22 to work with the teach pendant unit 21. Since the effective working range of RFID is usually short, it can be ensured that the wireless communication connection between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 is quickly disconnected or the mobile device 22 is prevented to control the teach pendant unit 21 when the physical distance between them is far, to disallow the user holding the mobile device 22 from operating the robot 10 again. Only when the mobile device 22 is moved to be close enough to the teach pendant unit 21 can the mobile device 22 be paired with the teach pendant unit 21 again. Therefore, the safety of the teaching system can be ensured to meet industry specifications. This is ideal especially in the field of robot where the industry requirement should be paid more attention.
[0045] Figs. 3-4 illustrate a front view and a side view of the teaching system 20 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, respectively. In the illustrated example embodiments as shown in Fig. 3, the teach pendant unit 21 may further include a coupling module 27 attached on the surface of the housing 23. The coupling module 27 is provided to couple the mobile device 22 to allow the teach pendant unit 21 to be firmly attached on the mobile device 22. In this way, the distance between the RFID tag 24 and the mobile device 22 is maintained so as to maintain the wireless communication between the mobile device 22 and the teach pendant unit 21. In this way, the physical distance between RFID tag 24 of the teach pendant unit 21 and the NFC module of the mobile device 22 may be kept small to make sure that the wireless communication between teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 is firmly connected.
[0046] Fig. 5 illustrates a method 500 of teaching a robot 10 in accordance with an example embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 500 may be implemented by the mobile device 22 described above. At block 502, the method 500 includes, at an mobile device 22, determining whether a RFID tag 24 is detected by the mobile device 22, wherein the RFID tag 24 is comprised by a teach pendant unit 21. At block 504, the method 500 further includes establishing a wireless communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 in response to determine that the RFID tag 24 is detected the mobile device 22.
[0047] In some example embodiments, at block 506, the method 500 may further include initiating an app to allow a user to operate the mobile device 22 to teach the robot 10.
[0048] In some example embodiments, at block 508, the method 500 may further include disconnecting the wireless communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 in response to determine that the RFID tag 24 is not detected by the mobile device 22.
[0049] In some example embodiments, at block 510, the method 500 may further include: stopping controlling the teach pendant unit 21 in response to determine that the RFID tag 24 is not detected by the mobile device 22.
[0050] Compared to the conventional approaches, by means of the RFID technology, a wireless communication between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 can be achieved in a simple, reliable and inexpensive way, thus avoiding the trouble and inconvenience caused by wired connection. In addition, since the effective working range of RFID is usually short, it can be ensured that the wireless communication connection between the teach pendant unit 21 and the mobile device 22 is disconnected when the physical distance between them is far, thereby ensuring the safety of the teaching system to meet industry specifications.
