Abstract
Description
[0001] Pymetrozine Compositions
[0002] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] Field of the Invention
[0004] The present disclosure relates generally to insecticide formulations. The present disclosure relates more particularly to pymetrozine formulations that can be provided in oily concentrate form and granule form both intended for dilution to form Tank-mix or Read-mix composition prior to application.
[0005] The present disclosure also relates to compositions of Pymetrozine and Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) and control of pests including though not limited to, brown planthopper (BPH) in crops herein exemplified by rice crops.
[0006] The present disclosure further relates to the efficacy of mixtures comprising Pymetrozine and Flonicamid and tank mixed with the Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO) for the control of pests such as brown planthopper (BPH), Silverleaf whitefly, Green peach aphid, Helicoverpa spp. and Spodoptera spp. in relevant crops.
[0007] It has been reported that when concentrated compositions of Pymetrozine, such as concentrates based on particulate Pymetrozine, are diluted in water, and mixed with other ingredients to form an End-Use pesticidal application mix (Tank -mix), the real-life behavior of the end-use mix doesn’t meet the levels of efficacy that was expected based on the amount of Pymetrozine applied in the field. This unexpectedly “less-than-expected efficacy” is sometimes realized or evidenced by a less than expected enhancement of efficacy when adding previously known “synergists” in other words the efficacy is not much improved over the efficacy of Pymetrozine alone or not to the expected extent.
[0008] This overall effect can be related to a reduction in bioavailability of the Pymetrozine in the Tank-mix or the physical state of the pymetrozine particulates, suspensibility, precipitation etc. Further, when previous Pymetrozine dispersion concentrates or dispersible granules etc. were diluted with water to prepare the final end -use, Tank-mix or ready-mix application (spray), products, these older, previous concentrates were found to be difficult if not impossible to disperse in the water, and this challenge was intensified after these prior art Pymetrozine dispersion concentrates had been stored for a period before dilution. Often previous Pymetrozine dispersion products displayed a disagreeable yellowing of color or other instabilities.
[0009] As seen in the “Manual on the development and use of FAO and WHO specifications for chemical pesticides”, found at https: / / www.fao.Org / 3 / cb8401en / cb8401en.pdf “OD, like SC formulations, do not disperse as spontaneously as EC formulations upon dilution in water. Therefore, the spray solution has to be stirred in order to obtain a homogeneous dispersion before application. The parameters which best describe the performance characteristics are: - Pourability (to ensure that the OD can be poured from its container); - Dispersion stability, wet sieve, and persistent foam tests PSD and suspensibility (to ensure the sprayability and stability of the diluted suspension); - Storage at elevated temperature (to ensure the absence of crystal growth upon storage)”. Inventors have found that there is a link between the identity and limits of the inactive co- formulants, ingredients etc., of pymetrozine oily dispersion concentrates as regards physical and chemical characteristics, stability, quality, and ease of manufacture of concentrated formulations of Pymetrozine oily dispersion concentrates.
[0010] Surprisingly, inventors have understood that pymetrozine concentrates that have been carefully formulated to only include carefully chosen inactive excipients, formulation co- formulants etc., can still display unwanted characteristic or loss of efficacy when they include additional active partner compounds or efficacy boosting compounds as ingredients when these compounds are introduced into the pymetrozine compositions as preformulated compositions, especially when those pre -formulated mixing partners include carriers solvents etc., that are detrimental to pymetrozine. The problem is “compounded” by the fact that often these active mixing partners are supplied commercially without a detailed list of heretofore believed innocuous carriers, solvents etc.
[0011] This insight of the inventors has led to their further surprising discovery, that the performance and efficacy of the dilute Pymetrozine end-use, Tank-mix or ready-mix application (spray), products which are prepared from pymetrozine concentrates such as Oily dispersion concentrates or (Water Dispersible) Granules are not only effected by the co- formulants of the pymetrozine concentrates etc., from which they are formed in Tankmixing, but that these dilute end-use mixes are also capable of being adversely effected by the choice of the “non-active” ingredients, adjuvants, carriers, excipients, additives etc. added to be included in the diluted Tank-mix that were heretofore assumed to be “inactive” or having no detrimental effects on the insecticidal performance of the Pymetrozine end-use, Tank-mix or ready-mix application (spray).
[0012] These products and additives are often referred to often called "agriculturally acceptable inert additives". So that even when a Pymetrozine Oily Dispersion concentrate or appropriately formulated (WDG) Granules has been acceptably formulated to have acceptable characteristics, the benefits can be “lost” when they are diluted in a tank -mix preparation in combination with inappropriate additional ingredients. Sometimes it isn’t immediately apparent why a particular additive has had a detrimental effect until the detailed “recipe”, or list of ingredients of that additive is examined and it is found that they have been supplied as a mixture of compounds including detrimental “inactive” solvents, carriers etc. that were not believed worth mentioning by the manufacturer.
[0013] However inventors have most surprisingly found that when the above Pymetrozine Concentrates or Granules have been even more optimally formulated to not only, exclude detrimental co-formulants but to also include advantageous ingredients as alluded to, the mixtures or end-use compositions (tank-mix) formed by dilution and addition of other ingredients therefrom can withstand the inclusion of some of the previously identified detrimental ingredients.
[0014] Thus these optimally formulated Oily Dispersions or WDG Granules of pymetrozine can be referred to as “compatibilized” or even “Immunized” against the activity of damaging ingredients. The “protective” ingredients can be referred to as compatibilizer co-formulant ingredients. In an experiment the inventors combined more optimally formulated Oily Dispersions of Pymetrozine and more Optimally Formulated Pymetrozine granules together with the type of co-formulants, and solvents found in a commercially available composition of Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO).
[0015] Inventors found that these combinations do not exhibit Active Ingredients chemical degradation or physical incompatibility in the presence of the Solvent in the PBO product even though previous experiments had shown that these types of ingredient / carrier could be detrimental if used while compounding Pymetrozine compositions.
[0016] This shows that the Oil-Based Pymetrozine concentrate, and Pymetrozine Granules have been compatibilized to otherwise detrimental co-formulants when mixed as ready mixes and Tank-mixes.
[0017] The extent to which compatibilization has been achieved will obviously depend on many factors, and it is possible to conceive of addition of so much of a non-advantageous ingredient to overcome this aforementioned compatibilization. Thus in general it is reasonable to refer to compatibilization as a range of protection, from somewhat less detrimentally effected by unhelpful additives, solvents etc. all the way to “fully immunized.
[0018] A case in point may be the use of known insecticide synergists. Despite promising laboratory binary efficacy tests of the pymetrozine chemical compound combined with a candidate synergist compound, this promise of enhanced efficacy is sometimes unexpectedly not realized in real-world field tests with dilute mixtures of formulated pymetrozine and commercial formulations of that same synergist.
[0019] It is only with the insight gained from the inventors’ understanding of how pymetrozine is extremely closely linked with the co-formulant “environment” within which it is formulated, that led the inventors to closely analyze the commercially available composition of synergists used, and determine that that some formulated synergist products included “inactive” ingredients solvents etc., that inventors now realize can have their detrimental impact or effect even in the dilute end-use spray mixes (Tank-mix).
[0020] In addition, the insights of the inventors have revealed that the detrimental effects of some identified classes of compound, solvents, carriers etc. can be due to the ingredients of the additional “active” compositions that are often added when preparing the end-use, application (spray), products sometimes these additional active compositions might be additional pesticides or efficacy enhancers or synergists. Such that even if efforts have been made to exclude or minimize the inclusion of detrimental co-formulants in the Pymetrozine concentrates, attention must also be focused on the additives used in preparing the end-use application mix.
[0021] As used herein, the term "agriculturally acceptable inert additives" (which may include adjuvants, excipients etc.,), is typically understood to any substance that itself is not an active ingredient but is added to the composition, such as sticking agents, surfactants, synergists, anti-oxidation agent, defoaming agents and thickeners so long as they are acceptable for agricultural use. As used herein, the term "additive" is defined as any substance that itself is not a pesticide but is added to the composition such as sticking agents, surfactants, synergists, buffers, acidifiers, defoaming agents and thickeners.
[0022] Further, based in these insights, inventors have determined that by even more carefully choosing the co-formulant ingredients of the Pymetrozine Oily Dispersion concentrate, it is possible to “protect” the pymetrozine during the dilution and Tank -mixing process so that the pymetrozine may be seen to be “immunized” at least to a certain degree against later addition of “damaging” additives introduced at the time of preparing the end-use diluted tank-mixes.
[0023] OBJECTIVE OF INVENTION
[0024] An objective of the present invention is to provide Ready-mix, End-Use spray mixes or Tank-mix dilute compositions prepared from concentrated compositions of solid particulate pymetrozine, such as Oil-Based Pymetrozine Dispersion (OBPD), liquid concentrate compositions or water dispersible granules etc., having any and / or all of, less complicated compounding, lower viscosity, greater ease in preparation of the diluted end-use suspensions in water.
[0025] Another objective of the present invention is to provide diluted end-use suspensions in water comprising Pymetrozine and synergist wherein the maximal potential efficacy enhancement of inclusion of that synergist can be realized. [0028] Definitions
[0029] Prior to setting forth the present subject matter in detail, it may be helpful to provide definitions of certain terms to be used herein. Unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as is commonly understood by one of skill in the art to which this subject matter belongs.
[0030] The term “a” or “an” as used herein includes the singular and the plural, unless specifically stated otherwise. Therefore, the terms “a,” “an” or “at least one” can be used interchangeably in this application.
[0031] Throughout the application, descriptions of various embodiments use the term “comprising”; however, it will be understood by one of skill in the art, that in some specific instances, an embodiment can alternatively be described using the language “consisting essentially of’ or “consisting of’ or containing.
[0032] The term “essentially absent” as referred to herein with respect to an ingredient in a composition or mixture etc., refers to an amount that is unable to have the effect that is herein taught to result from its inclusion and / or significantly below 1% by weight of the composition mixture etc., with the term “significantly below” similarly indicating either the lack of measurable effect or being at trace levels such as below 0.5% by weight.
[0033] In general all numerical values are to be assumed to be preceded by “about” unless otherwise dictated by the context or text. The term “about” as used herein regarding numerical values, specifically includes ±10% from the indicated values in the range unless otherwise detailed or unless the context makes this clearly unusable. For example, a value preceded by “no more than” or a value “17 or less” where only one option for a 10% approximation is appropriate. In such circumstances the “limit” imposed will not cancel the concept of approximation, but it will curtail it such that it will only encompass the normally encountered errors in measurement. So that in some cases it would be understood that “about 17°C or less” would be intended to include 17.6 if a 0.6°C error margin is within the normally encountered errors associated with that same measurement. In addition, the endpoints of all ranges directed to the same component or property herein are inclusive of the endpoints, are independently combinable, and include all intermediate points and ranges. It is understood that where a parameter range is provided, besides commonly accepted rules for rounding, all integers within that range, and tenths thereof, are also provided by the invention. For example, a range of “10-50%” includes 9.5%, 9.6%, 9.7%, 9.8%, 9.9%, 10%, 10.1%, 10.2%, etc. up to 50.4%.
[0034] The term minimized content or significant amounts of, these solvents, typically herein refers to, a content of less than 5% w / w of the composition, however, inventors also provide directions for the addition of specified additives that can ameliorate the unwanted effects of higher percentages of solvents content as later herein described. For the definition of essentially absent, see above, but generally being an amount so small as to not have the effect associated with its inclusion.
[0035] By choosing vegetable oil-based carriers such as methyl soyate rather than petroleum-based or aromatic solvents (e.g. Cio aromatic solvents or Solvesso etc.), paraffin or mineral oil, as carriers, inventors were able to ameliorate some of the problems summarized briefly above.
[0036] Without being bound to any theory, inventors have deduced the chemical structures that are believed to be responsible for some of the unwanted characteristics of Pymetrozine compositions that contain certain solvents, and thus in several embodiments, the inventive Oil Dispersion concentrate compositions, (and / or diluted dispersions thereof), are sometimes usefully characterised by minimized content or the lack of, the following structures labelled wherein, r and s are each independently, between 0 and 12 though typically, between greater than 0 and 12, and L is one or more of methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, isobutanol, t-butanol, cyclohexanol, 2-Ethyl Hexanol, alkylbenzene, tetrahydrofurfiiryl alcohol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, ethyl lactate, butyrolactone, ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, acetonitrile, dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-octyl-2 -pyrrolidone, N- decyl-2 -pyrrolidone, acetone, butanone, methyl isobutyl ketone, methylpropyl ketone, acetophenone, cyclohexanone, methylene chloride, trichloromethane, trichloroethane, tetrahydrofuran, diethylether, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, dioxane, methyl -tert.-butylether, ethanolamine, pyridine, chlorobenzene, toluene, xylene or tetramethyl urea.
[0037] Generally, herein the term “minimized content” of the above disclosed structures is understood to be an amount such that L comprises equal or less than 5% w / w of the composition, preferably significantly less.
[0038] However, inventors stress that, the ability to detect or quantify the percentage content, presence, or absence of any of these disclosed structures is not to be used alone, as being the sole defining factor or even indicative as to whether a particular Pymetrozine is within or outside the scope of the invention, as it is the inclusion or absence of the inventive non- pesticidally active formulation aids in the composition as elsewhere herein defined that will determine, although, it may be useful as a guide.
[0039] Some very specific exemplification embodiments of the invention can be dilute end-use compositions comprising, water for dilution and,
[0040] 1) a compound of structural formula (A) in solid particulate form,
[0041] 2) a compound of structural formula (B)
[0042] 3) an aqueous solution of alkylpolysaccharide surfactant comprising, alkyl polyglycoside, alkyl polyglucoside or mixtures thereof;
[0043] 4) alkoxylated adjuvant;
[0044] 5) anionic surfactant selected from, a. phosphate or phosphonate-based surfactant, b. sulphate or sulphonate -based surfactant, and c. a combination of phosphate or phosphonate-based surfactant and sulphate or sulphonate-based surfactants;
[0045] 6) triethylamine;
[0046] 7) methyl soyate, and
[0047] 8) optionally additional pesticidally active compound, such as flonicamid,
[0048] 9) optionally synergist or efficacy boosting compositions wherein, r and s are each independently, between greater than 0 and 12, and
[0049] L is one or more of methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, isobutanol, t-butanol, cyclohexanol, 2-Ethyl Hexanol, alkylbenzene, tetrahydrofurfiiryl alcohol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, ethyl lactate, butyrolactone, ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, acetonitrile, dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2 -pyrrolidone, N-octyl-2 -pyrrolidone, N-decyl-2-pyrrolidone, acetone, butanone, methyl isobutyl ketone, methylpropyl ketone, acetophenone, cyclohexanone, methylene chloride, trichloromethane, trichloroethane, tetrahydrofuran, diethylether, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, dioxane, methyl-tert-butyl ether, ethanolamine, pyridine, chlorobenzene, toluene, xylene or tetramethyl urea, and the content of L comprises equal or less than 5% w / w, preferably much less. , of the composition.
[0050] Clearly, not every single one of the ingredients exemplified above need to be present in a composition to be encompassed by the invention, but inventors choose to exemplify some particularly useful components and detrimental components to be avoided so as to provide some more tangible examples that should in no way be seen as limiting but merely helpful. In some noted embodiments, advantages are realized by inclusion in the compositions of non-insecticidal formulation aids which are alkoxylated adjuvants such as alkoxylated / ethoxylated carboxylic acid esters, ethoxylated carboxylic acids, ethoxylated primary or secondary linear or branched alcohols, alkoxylated fatty alcohols, ethoxylated fatty alcohols, coconut fatty alcohol ethoxylates, C12 / C14 fatty alcohol ethoxylates, cetyl / oleyl alcohol ethoxylates, C Cis fatty alcohol ethoxylates, Cn / cis fatty alcohol ethoxylates, Cs / C’u fatty alcohol ethoxylates, C13 / C15 fatty alcohol ethoxylates, Cn / cis fatty alcohol ethoxylates, tributyl phenol ethoxylates, ethoxylated (linear or branched), alkyl aryls such as ethoxylated alkyl phenols, nonylphenol ethoxylates and ethoxylated acetylenic diols, alkoxylated fatty alcohols / ethoxylated fatty alcohols, such as CAS No. 69011-36-5 (e.g. Imbentin® U / 050), ethoxylated isotridecyl alcohol, (CAS. 9043-30-5), a co-polymer PEG poly-iso-butenyl anhydride -tall oil fatty acid CAS. 173717-47-0 (e.g., Atlox® 4914). Noted are also ABA block copolymers having a hydrophilic portion of polyethylene oxide (PEG) and a hydrophobic portion of 12-hydroxystearic acid. A noted example is the commercial surfactant Atlox™ 4912 (trademark of Uniqema), having an average molecular weight of about 5,000. Another example of such a polymeric surfactant is the commercial surfactant Termul™ 2510 (trademark of Huntsman)
[0051] In some embodiments, advantages are realized by inclusion of non-insecticidal (pesticidal), formulation aids which are anionic surfactants, such as phosphate esters (mixtures of mono, and di-ester, free alcohol and phosphoric acid), alkyl phosphonic acids, phosphate esters of fatty alcohols, phosphate esters of ethoxylated fatty alcohols alkoxylated / ethoxylated phosphate esters, alkyl phosphonic acids, anionic phosphate esters / ethoxylated phosphate esters. Such formulation aids useful in the invention can be exemplified by Hostaphat® 1306 a phosphate ester based on iso-tridecanol ethoxylate alkyl, and olefin sulfonates comprising hydrophobic alkyl chain and an anionic sulfonic acid group, sulfate esters from sulfonation of fatty alcohols and alcohol ethoxylates.
[0052] It should be noted that while various solvents as mentioned above, can often be deleterious in binary combinations with Pymetrozine, by incorporating the disclosed oily carriers such as oily carriers from vegetable oils and their alkylated derivatives such as methylated seed oil, Methyl Soyate, Ethyl / ethoxylated Rapeseed oil, etc together with the herein disclosed compounding aids (formulation aids or excipients), the optimized Pymetrozine Tank-mix Dispersions of the invention are able to withstand amounts of these same solvents that would ordinarily cause the problems summarized above if combined with Pymetrozine in the absence of the excipients.
[0053] Thus, simply as a non-limiting example, surprisingly it was found that although excipients such as the NINATE™ series of alkyl (Cio-ie) Benzenesulfonic acid, Calcium Salt, can contain up to about 40% of solvents including, Isobutyl Alcohol, 2-Ethyl Hexanol, 1- hexanol, or 1 -butanol, the previously encountered negative effects on the character of the compositions are no longer apparent in the Pymetrozine Tank-mix Dispersion compositions of the invention, due to the incorporation of the inventive ingredients carriers etc. This type of protective effect may be labelled as immunization, but no agricultural, or biological consequence of this choice of textural labeling as immunizing is intended, although as previously mentioned in some embodiments, efficacy benefits of the Tank-mix compositions are demonstrated. In some composition embodiments of the inventive Pymetrozine dispersion compositions, inclusion of compounds exemplified by triethylamine (TEA) combined with alkyl polyglucosides / alkyl polyglycosides, such as, Glucopon® 650 EC, Multitrope® 1620, ATLOX™ AL2575 / AL2579, Agnique® PG 8107 / Agnique® PG 8105, Tensoper APG 810 etc., improves, both the quality and dispersibility of the concentrate compositions in the water when preparing dilute end-use liquids. Inventors have additionally found that surprisingly, including compounds exemplified by triethylamine (TEA) can provide physical quality improvements. Alkyl polyglucosides and alkyl polyglycosides are sometimes also referred to as alkyl polysaccharides, terms which have been used interchangeably.
[0054] The inclusion of triethylamine, even in the absence of the alkyl polyglucosides etc., is understood to be advantageous as regards dispersibility of the concentrate, however, as disclosed, some further advantages are realized by the inclusion of the alkyl polyglucosides together with TEA in the composition.
[0055] It is now understood that inclusion of Alkyl polyglycosides / Alkyl Polyglucosides (APG)Zalkyl polysaccharides can have further surprising effects. Generally, water contacting Pymetrozine concentrated compositions can have unwanted effects on the pymetrozine sometimes even causing “solidification”. Compositions including APG were found to be forgiving as regard to water - pymetrozine interactions.
[0056] As a non-limiting demonstration, it was found that grades of APG that were used as -50% aqueous solutions when introduced during compounding of concentrates, actually greatly improved the compositions despite the presence of the included water. This effect is understood now to be applicable in compounding end-use Tank-mix compositions.
[0057] Inventors have encountered the increased and / or synergistic, formulation quality and / or stability advantages of combining the different non-insecticidal formulation aids, over and above the advantages realized by inclusion of only one, two or three of the identified and disclosed useful non-insecticidal formulation aids in the absence of the others.
[0058] In some inventive embodiments, optimized Pymetrozine dispersion compositions or for dispersion in water, included, in addition to pymetrozine and optionally additional pesticides and or synergists, more than one or even all of the following non-insecticidal ingredients, a) alkyl polyglycosides and / or alkyl polyglucosides and / or alkyl polysaccharides (that encompasses both), b) anionic surfactants, such as phosphonate, phosphate esters, sulfonates, sulphate esters (branched, or linear) etc. c) alkoxylated adjuvant(s) such as alkoxylated / ethoxylated carboxylic acid esters, ethoxylated carboxylic acids, ethoxylated primary or secondary linear or branched alcohols, alkoxylated fatty alcohols, ethoxylated fatty alcohols etc. d) triethylamine (end-use dispersibility stabilizer / compatibilizer), and e) vegetable oil, or alkylated vegetable oil, such as methyl soyate palm methyl ester oil, methyl oleate, methyl linoleate, methyl linolenate, methyl stearate, methyl palmitate etc.
[0059] In some inventive embodiments, optimized Pymetrozine dispersion or dispersible, compositions include in addition to Insecticidal compounds and synergists, more than one or all of the following non- Insecticidal ingredients, a) alkyl polyglycosides and / or alkyl polyglucosides and / or alkyl polysaccharides, b) anionic surfactants, such as phosphonate, phosphate esters sulfonates sulphate esters etc. c) alkoxylated adjuvant such as alkoxylated / ethoxylated carboxylic acid esters, ethoxylated carboxylic acids, ethoxylated primary or secondary linear or branched alcohols, alkoxylated fatty alcohols, ethoxylated fatty alcohols etc., d) vegetable oil, or derivative thereof exemplified by alkylated vegetable oil, such as methyl soyate palm methyl ester oil, methyl oleate, methyl linoleate, methyl linolenate, methyl stearate, methyl palmitate etc. and, e) end-use dispersibility stabilizer / compatibilizer such as, tertiary amine, alkyl amine such as, triethylamine, triethanolamine, N,N -di -isopropyl ethylamine, butylamine, etc. In several embodiments, the Pymetrozine Dispersions of the invention advantageously contain alkyl polysaccharide (APG), as an ingredient of the composition. “Pymetrozine Dispersion Compositions” as herein referred to when discussing ingredients, also relates to the concentrate compositions or granules which are compounded and intended to be dispersed in water to make the End-Use Spray Application Mix or Rady Mix or Tank -mix spray liquid.
[0060] Or rephrased as, “Reference to Pymetrozine Dispersions above refers inter alia to end-use (spray) application mixes (Tank-mix) but in no way excludes concentrated Pymetrozine concentrates”.
[0061] As the carriers, solvents additives, excipients found to be deleterious and the carriers, solvents additives, excipients adjuvants carriers etc. that are useful in this invention of End- Use diluted pymetrozine Tank-mixes mirror those ingredients found to be useful or problematic in compounding the concentrated Oil-Based Pymetrozine concentrates, full details of the extent and range of each type of ingredient can be usefully understood by reading the disclosure of co-pending application PCT / IB2024 / 052508 (due to be), published on or about September 19, 2024, based on priority application, U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 452,142, filed March 14, 2023.
