[0021] The aerosol-generating device may be configured such that the varying transversal cross-section of the first channel portion defines an overall retention of draw of the aerosol-generating device.

[0022] As used herein, the term “overall retention of draw of the aerosol-generating device” refers to the retention draw of the aerosol-generating device between the air inlet of the device and the air outlet of the device without the presence of an aerosol-generating article in the cavity.

[0031] The cavity end wall may fluidly isolate the puff sensor from the airflow channel.

[0032] The cavity end wall may comprise a recess. The puff sensor may extend into the recess. By extending into the recess, the puff sensor may be provided particularly close to the interior of the cavity. This may improve thermal contact of the thermistor with the cavity. This may improve the accuracy of the puff sensor.

[0033] The puff sensor may be encapsulated in a closed space within the recess. Such encapsulation may improve thermal contact of the thermistor with the cavity. This may improve the accuracy of the puff sensor.

[0034] The aerosol-generating device may be configured such that a thickness of the cavity end wall at a position located spatially between the cavity and the puff sensor does not exceed 3 millimeters, preferably does not exceed 2.5 millimeters, more preferably does not exceed 2 millimeters, more preferably does not exceed 1.5 millimeters.

[0035] The puff sensor may be positioned such that a line extending along a longitudinal central axis of the cavity crosses the position of the puff sensor.

[0038] A main axis of extension of the printed circuit board may be perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the cavity.

[0039] The aerosol-generating device may comprise one or more stiffener elements attached to the printed circuit board.

[0040] The one or more stiffener elements may comprise a plastic material, preferably a hard plastic material.

[0041] The one or more stiffener elements may be configured to electrically isolate the printed circuit board from other parts of the device being in contact with the one or more stiffener elements. The one or more stiffener elements may further improve mechanical stability of the flexible printed circuit board.

[0042] The longitudinal axis of the cavity may be parallel to a longitudinal axis of the aerosol-generating device.

[0048] The terms “retention of draw” , “retention to draw” , and “RTD” are used synonymously herein. The retention of draw may be determined using standard methods known to those skilled in the art. The retention of draw may be determined following ISO regime “ISO, 2000a” . Under the ISO testing regime (ISO, 2000a) , a puff volume of 35 milliliters and a duration of 2 seconds are mandated. The retention of draw may be determined following Health Canada Intense, now ISO intense “ISO, 2017b” , regime. The Health Canada Intense regime prescribes a puff volume of 55 milliliters and a duration of 2 seconds.

[0049] As used herein, the terms ‘proximal’ , ‘distal’ , ‘downstream’ and ‘upstream’ are used to describe the relative positions of components, or portions of components, of the aerosol-generating device in relation to the direction in which a user draws on the aerosol-generating device during use thereof.

[0050] The aerosol-generating device may comprise a mouth end through which in use an aerosol exits the aerosol-generating device and is delivered to a user. The mouth end may also be referred to as the proximal end. In use, a user draws on the proximal or mouth end of the aerosol-generating device in order to inhale an aerosol generated by the aerosol- generating device. Alternatively, a user may directly draw on an aerosol-generating article inserted into the aperture of the cavity. The cavity may be configured to receive the aerosol-generating article. The aerosol-generating device comprises a distal end opposed to the proximal or mouth end. The proximal or mouth end of the aerosol-generating device may also be referred to as the downstream end and the distal end of the aerosol-generating device may also be referred to as the upstream end. Components, or portions of components, of the aerosol-generating device may be described as being upstream or downstream of one another based on their relative positions between the proximal, downstream or mouth end and the distal or upstream end of the aerosol-generating device.

[0051] As used herein, an ‘aerosol-generating device’ relates to a device that interacts with an aerosol-forming substrate to generate an aerosol. The aerosol-forming substrate may be part of an aerosol-generating article, for example part of a smoking article. An aerosol-generating device may be a smoking device that interacts with an aerosol-forming substrate of an aerosol-generating article to generate an aerosol that is directly inhalable into a user’s lungs thorough the user's mouth. An aerosol-generating device may be a holder. The device may be an electrically heated smoking device. The aerosol-generating device may comprise a housing, electric circuitry, a power supply, a heating chamber and a heating element.

[0052] As used herein with reference to the present invention, the term ‘smoking’ with reference to a device, article, system, substrate, or otherwise does not refer to conventional smoking in which an aerosol-forming substrate is fully or at least partially combusted. The aerosol-generating device of the present invention is arranged to heat the aerosol-forming substrate to a temperature below a combustion temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate, but at or above a temperature at which one or more volatile compounds of the aerosol-forming substrate are released to form an inhalable aerosol.

[0053] The aerosol-generating device may comprise electric circuitry. The electric circuitry may comprise a microprocessor, which may be a programmable microprocessor. The microprocessor may be part of a controller. The electric circuitry may comprise further electronic components. The electric circuitry may be configured to regulate a supply of power to the heating element. Power may be supplied to the heating element continuously following activation of the aerosol-generating device or may be supplied intermittently, such as on a puff-by-puff basis. The power may be supplied to the heating element in the form of pulses of electrical current. The electric circuitry may be configured to monitor the electrical resistance of the heating element, and preferably to control the supply of power to the heating element dependent on the electrical resistance of the heating element.

[0054] The aerosol-generating device may comprise a power supply, typically a battery, within a main body of the aerosol-generating device. In one embodiment, the power supply is a Lithium-ion battery. Alternatively, the power supply may be a Nickel-metal hydride battery, a  Nickel cadmium battery, or a Lithium based battery, for example a Lithium-Cobalt, a Lithium-Iron-Phosphate, Lithium Titanate or a Lithium-Polymer battery. As an alternative, the power supply may be another form of charge storage device such as a capacitor. The power supply may require recharging and may have a capacity that enables to store enough energy for one or more usage experiences; for example, the power supply may have sufficient capacity to continuously generate aerosol for a period of around six minutes or for a period of a multiple of six minutes. In another example, the power supply may have sufficient capacity to provide a predetermined number of puffs or discrete activations of the heating element.

[0055] The aperture of the cavity of the aerosol-generating device provides an open end into which the aerosol-generating article is inserted. The open end may be a proximal end. The cavity may have a closed end opposite the open end. The closed end may be the base of the cavity. The closed end may be closed except for the provision of air apertures arranged in the base. The base of the cavity may be flat. The base of the cavity may be circular. The base of the cavity may be arranged upstream of the cavity. The open end may be arranged downstream of the cavity. The cavity may have an elongate extension. The cavity may have a longitudinal central axis. A longitudinal direction may be the direction extending between the open and closed ends along the longitudinal central axis. The longitudinal central axis of the cavity may be parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol-generating device.

[0056] The cavity may be configured as a heating chamber. The cavity may have a cylindrical shape. The cavity may have a hollow cylindrical shape. The cavity may have a shape corresponding to the shape of the aerosol-generating article to be received in the cavity. The cavity may have a circular cross-section. The cavity may have an elliptical or rectangular cross-section. The cavity may have an inner diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the aerosol-generating article.

[0057] An airflow channel may run through the cavity. Ambient air may be drawn into the aerosol-generating device, into the cavity and towards the user through the airflow channel. Downstream of the cavity, a mouthpiece may be arranged or a user may directly draw on the aerosol-generating article. The airflow channel may extend through the mouthpiece. As described herein, the airflow channel within the cavity is preferably formed by the depressions in the sidewall of the cavity. When the aerosol-generating article is at least partly received in the cavity, air may be drawn into the cavity at the proximal end of the cavity between the periphery of the aerosol-generating article and the sidewall of the cavity through the depressions within the sidewall of the cavity.

[0058] In any of the aspects of the disclosure, the heating element may comprise an electrically resistive material. Suitable electrically resistive materials include but are not limited to:semiconductors such as doped ceramics, electrically "conductive" ceramics (such as, for example, molybdenum disilicide) , carbon, graphite, metals, metal alloys and composite  materials made of a ceramic material and a metallic material. Such composite materials may comprise doped or undoped ceramics. Examples of suitable doped ceramics include doped silicon carbides. Examples of suitable metals include titanium, zirconium, tantalum platinum, gold and silver. Examples of suitable metal alloys include stainless steel, nickel-, cobalt-, chromium-, aluminium-titanium-zirconium-, hafnium-, niobium-, molybdenum-, tantalum-, tungsten-, tin-, gallium-, manganese-, gold-and iron-containing alloys, and super-alloys based on nickel, iron, cobalt, stainless steel,  and iron-manganese-aluminium based alloys. In composite materials, the electrically resistive material may optionally be embedded in, encapsulated or coated with an insulating material or vice-versa, depending on the kinetics of energy transfer and the external physicochemical properties required.

[0059] As described, in any of the aspects of the disclosure, the heating element may be part of an aerosol-generating device. The aerosol-generating device may comprise an internal heating element or an external heating element, or both internal and external heating elements, where "internal" and "external" refer to the aerosol-forming substrate. An internal heating element may take any suitable form. For example, an internal heating element may take the form of a heating blade. Alternatively, the internal heater may take the form of a casing or substrate having different electro-conductive portions, or an electrically resistive metallic tube. Alternatively, the internal heating element may be one or more heating needles or rods that run through the center of the aerosol-forming substrate. Other alternatives include a heating wire or filament, for example a Ni-Cr (Nickel-Chromium) , platinum, tungsten or alloy wire or a heating plate. Optionally, the internal heating element may be deposited in or on a rigid carrier material. In one such embodiment, the electrically resistive heating element may be formed using a metal having a defined relationship between temperature and resistivity. In such an exemplary device, the metal may be formed as a track on a suitable insulating material, such as ceramic material, and then sandwiched in another insulating material, such as a glass. Heaters formed in this manner may be used to both heat and monitor the temperature of the heating elements during operation.

[0060] An external heating element may take any suitable form. For example, an external heating element may take the form of one or more flexible heating foils on a dielectric substrate, such as polyimide. The flexible heating foils can be shaped to conform to the perimeter of the substrate receiving cavity. Alternatively, an external heating element may take the form of a metallic grid or grids, a flexible printed circuit board, a molded interconnect device (MID) , ceramic heater, flexible carbon fibre heater or may be formed using a coating technique, such as plasma vapour deposition, on a suitable shaped substrate. An external heating element may also be formed using a metal having a defined relationship between temperature and resistivity. In such an exemplary device, the metal may be formed as a track between two layers of suitable insulating materials. An external heating element  formed in this manner may be used to both heat and monitor the temperature of the external heating element during operation.

[0061] As an alternative to an electrically resistive heating element, the heating element may be configured as an induction heating element. The induction heating element may comprise an induction coil and a susceptor. In general, a susceptor is a material that is capable of generating heat, when penetrated by an alternating magnetic field. When located in an alternating magnetic field. If the susceptor is conductive, then typically eddy currents are induced by the alternating magnetic field. If the susceptor is magnetic, then typically another effect that contributes to the heating is commonly referred to hysteresis losses. Hysteresis losses occur mainly due to the movement of the magnetic domain blocks within the susceptor, because the magnetic orientation of these will align with the magnetic induction field, which alternates. Another effect contributing to the hysteresis loss is when the magnetic domains will grow or shrink within the susceptor. Commonly all these changes in the susceptor that happen on a nano-scale or below are referred to as “hysteresis losses” , because they produce heat in the susceptor. Hence, if the susceptor is both magnetic and electrically conductive, both hysteresis losses and the generation of eddy currents will contribute to the heating of the susceptor. If the susceptor is magnetic, but not conductive, then hysteresis losses will be the only means by which the susceptor will heat, when penetrated by an alternating magnetic field. According to the invention, the susceptor may be electrically conductive or magnetic or both electrically conductive and magnetic. An alternating magnetic field generated by one or several induction coils heat the susceptor, which then transfers the heat to the aerosol-forming substrate, such that an aerosol is formed. The heat transfer may be mainly by conduction of heat. Such a transfer of heat is best, if the susceptor is in close thermal contact with the aerosol-forming substrate.

[0062] As used herein, the term ‘aerosol-generating article’ refers to an article comprising an aerosol-forming substrate that is capable of releasing volatile compounds that can form an aerosol. For example, an aerosol-generating article may be a smoking article that generates an aerosol that is directly inhalable into a user’s lungs through the user's mouth. An aerosol-generating article may be disposable.

[0063] As used herein, the term ‘aerosol-forming substrate’ relates to a substrate capable of releasing one or more volatile compounds that can form an aerosol. Such volatile compounds may be released by heating the aerosol-forming substrate. An aerosol-forming substrate may conveniently be part of an aerosol-generating article or smoking article.

[0064] The aerosol-forming substrate may be a solid aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol-forming substrate may comprise both solid and liquid components. The aerosol-forming substrate may comprise a tobacco-containing material containing volatile tobacco flavour compounds which are released from the substrate upon heating. The aerosol-forming  substrate may comprise a non-tobacco material. The aerosol-forming substrate may comprise an aerosol former that facilitates the formation of a dense and stable aerosol. Examples of suitable aerosol formers are glycerine and propylene glycol.

[0065] The aerosol-generating substrate preferably comprises homogenised tobacco material, an aerosol-former and water. Providing homogenised tobacco material may improve aerosol generation, the nicotine content and the flavour profile of the aerosol generated during heating of the aerosol-generating article. Specifically, the process of making homogenised tobacco involves grinding tobacco leaf, which more effectively enables the release of nicotine and flavours upon heating.

[0066] Below, there is provided a non-exhaustive list of non-limiting examples. Any one or more of the features of these examples may be combined with any one or more features of another example, embodiment, or aspect described herein.

[0125] A longitudinal central axis 38 of the aerosol-generating device is located spatially between the first channel portion 30 and the third channel portion 36. The longitudinal axis 14 of the cavity 10 is parallel to the longitudinal axis 38 of the aerosol-generating device. The air inlet opening 24 and the aperture 12 of the cavity 10 lie within a common plane. The common plane is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 14 of the cavity 10.

[0126] The aerosol-generating device comprises a cover element 40 comprising a lower cover surface 42 facing the upper housing surface 22. The cover element 40 is coupled to the upper housing surface 22 by a sliding mechanism to allow relative movement of the cover element 40 between a first position and a second position as indicated by an arrow in Fig. 2a. In Fig. 2a, the cover element 40 is in the first position covering the aperture 12.

[0127] A transversal cross-section of the first channel portion 30 linearly decreases in a direction from the air inlet 24 to the corner 32 over part of the length of the first channel portion 30.

[0128] Preferably, the transversal cross-section of the first channel portion 30 varies such that the inner diameter of the first channel portion 30 at a first position 31 is about 1.8 millimeters, and the inner diameter of the first channel portion at a second position 31’ is about 1.4 millimeters. The second position 31’ is preferably the part of the airflow channel with the smallest cross-section. The aerosol-generating device is configured such that the varying transversal cross-section of the first channel portion 30 defines the overall retention of draw of the aerosol-generating device. In other words, the second position 31’ is configured as a bottleneck for the airflow.

[0129] The aerosol-generating device comprises a puff sensor 44. The puff sensor 44 comprises a thermistor. The puff sensor 44 is provided in proximity to the second end 16 of the cavity 10.

[0130] The cavity 10 comprises a cavity end wall 46 at the second end 16 of the cavity 10. The puff sensor 44 is provided directly adjacent to the cavity end wall 46 outside the cavity 10. The cavity end wall 46 fluidly isolates the puff sensor 44 from the airflow channel. The cavity end wall 46 comprises a recess 48. The puff sensor 44 extends into the recess 48.

[0131] The puff sensor 44 is positioned such that a line extending along a longitudinal central axis 14 of the cavity 10 crosses the position of the puff sensor 44.

[0132] The puff sensor 44 is provided on a flexible printed circuit board 50. A main axis of extension of the printed circuit board 50 is arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 14 of the cavity 10. The printed circuit board 50 electrically connects the puff sensor 44 to a controller 52 of the device.

[0133] The cavity end wall 46 may extend up to the printed circuit board 50 (except for the recess 48) to contact the printed circuit board 50 such that the puff sensor 44 is encapsulated in a closed space within the recess 48. Such encapsulation may improve thermal contact of the thermistor with the cavity 10. This may improve the accuracy of the puff sensor 44.

[0134] The aerosol-generating device comprises stiffener elements 54 attached to the printed circuit board 50. The stiffener elements 54 are configured to electrically isolate the printed circuit board 50 from other parts 56 of the device being in contact with the stiffener elements 54. The stiffener elements 54 may further improve mechanical stability of the flexible printed circuit board 50.

[0135] Figs. 2b and 2c show top views onto the upper housing surface 22 of the aerosol-generating device of Fig. 2a. In Fig. 2b, the cover element 40 is in the first position as shown in Fig. 2a. In the first position, the cover element covers the aperture 12. The air inlet 24 is uncovered by the cover element 40 when the cover element 40 is in the first position.

[0136] In Fig. 2c, the cover element 40 is in the second position. The cover element 40 covers the air inlet 24 when the cover element 40 is in the second position. The aperture 12 is uncovered by the cover element 40 when the cover element 40 is in the second position. In this configuration, an aerosol-generating article (not shown) may be inserted into the cavity 10 via the aperture 12. At the same time, the cover element 40 covers the air inlet 24 which may prevent a user from accidentally clogging the air inlet 24 with her or his fingers. The aerosol-generating device is configured such that ambient air can pass between the lower cover surface 42 and the upper housing surface 22 when the cover element 40 is in the second position to provide air to the airflow channel.

[0137] When the aerosol-generating article (not shown) is inserted in the cavity 10, a mouth-end portion of the article may protrude out of the aperture 12 of the cavity 10, and a user may draw directly on the mouth-end portion of the article. During use, air may enter the air inlet 24 by passing between the lower cover surface 42 and the upper housing surface 22. The airflow may further travel along the first channel portion 30, along the corner 32, and then along the second channel portion 34 to enter the cavity 10. The airflow then passes through the article inserted into the cavity 10 along the third channel portion 36. Preferably, the article is heated within the cavity 10 by means of a heating element 18 of the aerosol-generating device. For example, the heating element 18 may be a resistive heating element and may comprise one or more electrically conductive tracks arranged on a flexible electrically insulating substrate being wrapped around at least a portion of the cavity 10. Due to heating of the aerosol-forming substrate of the aerosol-generating article by the heating element 18, volatile compounds are released from an aerosol-forming substrate of the aerosol-generating article. The volatile compounds are picked-up by the airflow passing through the article along the third channel  portion 36 to successively create an aerosol. At the air outlet 12 of the device, the airflow further travels through the mouth-end-portion of the article and then into a user’s mouth.

[0138] The sliding mechanism comprises a first longitudinally extending groove recessed in one of the lower cover surface 42 and the upper housing surface 22. The sliding mechanism comprises a first guide element 26 protruding from the other of the lower cover surface 42 and the upper housing surface 22, such that separation between the lower cover surface 42 and the upper housing surface 22 is maintained at a distance when the first guide element 26 is engaged with the first longitudinally extending groove.

[0139] Fig. 3a shows a perspective view of an upper portion of an aerosol-generating device. The device may be the device of Figs. 2a to 2c. The device of Fig. 3a comprises a movable cover element 40 which is shown in the first position in Fig. 3a. The aerosol-generating device is configured such that ambient air can pass between the lower cover surface 42 and the upper housing surface 22 when the cover element 40 is in the second position to provide air to the airflow channel. The device of Fig. 3a comprises a structured upper housing surface 22 over which the cover element 40 may be slidingly moved. The structured upper housing surface 22 comprises a plurality of protrusions 58 arranged on a straight planar base. The lower cover surface 42 is maintained distanced from the straight planar base of the structured upper housing surface 22 by the plurality of the protrusions 58 as shown in Fig. 3b. The protrusions 58 are arranged such that a lateral air gap between the entire lower cover surface 42 and the straight planar base 20 may be substantially avoided. However, air may pass between neighboring protrusions 58 such that ambient air can pass between the lower cover surface 42 and the upper housing surface 22 when the cover element 40 is in the second position.
