Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for one or more network function (NF) in a core network (CN) to handle data collection requests from an application function (AF) external to the CN. The NF is configured for receiving, from the AF external to the CN, configuration data including AF measurement requirements for one or more user equipment (UE) in an area of interest. In to verifying that the AF is authorized to provide the AF measurement requirements to the CN, the NF stores the AF measurement requirements within the CN, determines an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) in the area of interest serving the one or more UE, and sends the AF measurement requirements to the AMF for configuring the one or more UE with the AF measurement requirements through a Radio Access Network (RAN).

Description

APPLICATION FUNCTION PROVISIONING OF MEASUREMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR UE DATA COLLECTIONTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including provisioning of measurement requirements for UE data collection.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a base station and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G) , 3GPP New Radio (NR) (e.g., 5G) , and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as ) .

[0003] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems' standards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a base station of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a user equipment (UE) . 3GPP RANs can include, for example, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) , Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) , Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) , Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) , and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) .

[0004] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the base station and the UE. For example, the GERAN implements GSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE) , and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR) . In certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.

[0005] A base station used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E-UTRAN base station is an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB, or eNB) . One example of an NG-RAN base station is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB) .

[0006] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN) . For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC) .

[0013] FIG. 5 illustrates a system for performing signaling between a wireless device and a network device, according to embodiments disclosed herein.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0014] Various embodiments are described with regard to a UE. However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and  data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.

[0015] Training artificial intelligence and machine learning (AIML) models for application to an NR air interface uses specific data from UEs operating within the network. This data can include a variety of metrics such as signal strength, channel state information, user mobility patterns, and so on.

[0016] Configuring a network to collect the necessary measurements for AIML operations is generally managed through Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) methods. Adjustments to data collection configurations is typically made per each UE in a network and guided by an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) .

[0017] Application functions (AFs) are external functions used to collect and / or use data for AIML operations. AFs can detail specific requests for specific data formats and measurements, as required for specific AIML models and operations. AFs can handle data requests by interacting with components of a next generation radio access network (NG-RAN) .

[0018] Since AFs are external entities, interactions with a given network are managed to ensure security and privacy. Mechanisms can be implemented to ensure that the data collected by AFs is in compliance with regulatory and operator policies, which safeguard a network and users.

[0019] One challenge in integrating AF and AIML data collection functionality into the NR air interface is managing AF access to a RAN, or allowing AFs to influence the measurement configurations within the network, without compromising integrity and security.

[0020] Aspects and implementations of the present disclosure address the above and additional challenges by providing methods and architecture for facilitating secure communication and transfer of UE data requirements between a network and an AF requesting UE data for AIML.

[0021] In some embodiments, transmission of data requests, including specific AF measurement requirements, can be managed by a AIML Data Management Function (ADMF) . AFs can interact with the ADMF directly, or through a NEF.

[0022] The ADMF can manage data collection requests and requirements, perform authorization verification for AFs, modify UDM subscription data to alter collection requirements, and ensure an AMF updates the NG-RAN when the UE enters specified areas of interest. In some embodiments, the ADMF can retrieve the serving AMF via the UDM and communicate AF measurement requirements to the NG-RAN using N2 messages.

[0023] In certain wireless systems, AIML for the NR air interface may be used for operations such as channel state information (CSI) feedback, beam management, and positioning accuracy. However, there is a need for enhancements to Core Network (CN) procedures to enable AIML operations for the NR air interface. For example, AIML operations can require model training in an offline mode. Such training can be carried out by external AFs, such as those provided by AIML Application Providers, on data that is collected from the NG-RAN and / or UE. Data collection from a UE can be performed as part of measurement reporting processes (e.g., through Minimization of Drive Tests (MDT) or similar methods) , and the measurement configuration may be customized depending on the AF conducting the training.

[0024] The NG-RAN provisions this measurement configuration to the UE. However, certain wireless systems do not address how to allow the third party AF (responsible for AIML operations for air interface) to influence RAN for necessary measurement configuration, nor how to keep this configuration under operator control. Both of these aspects include CN involvement.

[0025] AF requirements for Measurement configuration.

[0026] OAM methods are typically used to provision NG-RAN measurement configuration. Some UE-specific adjustments for the measurement configuration are performed by NG-RAN, based on inputs from AMF. Such inputs can, for example, be based on an RFSP (RAT / Frequency Selection Priority) index provided by the AMF for a UE.In some cases, data collection and exposure to an AF for AIML operations are controlled by the operator.

[0027] In some cases, the AF provides its requirements for measurement configuration in the format of an “AF measurement requirements” information element (IE) . The contents of the AF measurement requirements IE for measurement configuration may include, for example, UE identifiers (IDs) , an area of interest such as a tracking area (optionally, also at cell level granularity) , Model ID (s) , Vendor ID (s) (also referred to as  interoperability indicators) , an AIML index, a granular measurement configuration, an AF ID to identify the AF requesting the measurements, and a time window for data collection and / or measurement reporting (e.g., measurements may not be reported in real time for offline training) . The AIML operation index may be associated with the type of AIML operation to be performed (e.g., beam management, CSI prediction, etc. ) , wherein AF requirements may be specified either at a coarse level as AIML operation type or as a granular measurement configuration. When specified as an AIML operation type, the exact measurement configuration may then be derived by the NG-RAN. In certain embodiments, the index may also identify the AF that is requesting the measurements. The granular measurement configuration may specify a frequency range (e.g., FR1, FR2) (i.e., measurement parameters are configured when the UE has a secondary cell (SCell) configuration from the selected frequency range) , and a cell type.

[0028] Example handling of AF requirements for measurement configuration.

[0029] In certain embodiments disclosed herein, a network function (NF) in the CN is configured to handle the requirements for data collection from AFs external to the CN. In certain such embodiments, a NF in the CN referred to as an AIML Data Management Function (ADMF) is configured to handle the requirements for data collection from AFs external to the CN. The ADMF can manage data collection requests from all AFs, and can be deployed as an AF by an operator. This NF could also be partly or fully realized in an enhanced Data Collection and Analytics Function (DCAF) deployed by the operator. Alternatively, a network exposure function (NEF) can be configured or enhanced to provide part or all of the functionality of the ADMF described herein.

[0030] In some embodiments, the AF interacts with the ADMF either directly or through the NEF. In the described configuration (e.g., in the configuration seen in FIG. 1) , the interaction occurs through the NEF. In other embodiments, direct interaction is used between the AF and ADMF (e.g., see the configuration shown in FIG. 3) .

[0031] In certain embodiments, as shown in FIG. 1, Unified Data Management (UDM) subscription data is enhanced to store one or more AF measurement requirements. The ADMF can then invoke the UDM's SubscriptionModify service to add the data collection requirements.

[0032] FIG. 1 illustrates a data flow diagram of a first portion of an example procedure for provisioning a UE within a wireless network with a data measurement configuration,  according to embodiments described herein. This example includes communication between a UDM 102, an ADMF 104, an NEF 106, and an AF 108.

[0033] In some embodiments, the UDM 102 can be responsible for storing subscriber data and handling modifications to subscription information related to AF measurement requirements. The ADMF 104 can manage data collection requests from AF (s) , ensuring that requests are authorized and appropriately configured. The NEF 106 can serve as an intermediary, facilitating communication between the AF and ADMF or directly handling data collection requests. The AF 108 can generate measurement requirements to be managed by the 5G Core network.

[0034] As shown in the example of FIG. 1, the AF 108 transmits a data collection configuration request via a Nnef_AIMLDataCollection_Configure 110 message including AF measurement requirements 112 to the ADMF 104 through the NEF 106. Accordingly, the NEF 106 transmits a Nadmf_AIMLDataCollection_Configure 114 message including the AF measurement requirements 112 to the ADMF 104.

[0035] The data collection configuration request from the AF 108 (i.e., including the AF measurement requirements 112) can then be processed by the ADMF 104. The ADMF 104 checks the authorization status of the AF 108 (e.g., at ADMF Authorization Check 116) to determine if the AF 108 is permitted to provide the specified measurement requirements. Should authorization be confirmed, the ADMF 104 updates relevant subscriber data within the UDM 102 (e.g., at ADMF Updates Subscriber Data 118) . A Nudm_SDM_ModifySubscription 120 message can be forwarded from the ADMF 104 to the UDM 102 including the AF measurement requirements 112. The processed and configured / modified AF measurement requirements 112 can then be stored within the UDM 102 (e.g., at Stores Configuration data 122) .

[0036] After the subscription data has been successfully modified, the UDM 102 sends a confirmation communication back to the ADMF 104 (e.g., in a Nudm_SDM_ModifySubscription_CNF 124 message) . For example, in some embodiments, the Nudm_SDM_ModifySubscription_CNF 124 message can indicate that the modification has been completed. The ADMF 104, in turn, forwards the communication to the NEF 106 and the AF 108 through communication Nadmf_AIMLDataCollection_Configure_CNF 126 and communication Nadmf_AIMLDataCollection_Configure_CNF 126. The AF 108 can thus receive confirmation of successful configuration of the requested data collection configuration.

[0037] In some embodiments, if user consent for data collection is granted, and if the UE's serving AMF is in the tracking area requested by the data collection requirement, the UDM notifies the AMF of the SDM modification. If the AF measurement requirement specifies an area of interest more granular than a tracking area, the AMF may initiate a location reporting procedure to be notified when the UE enters the area of interest.

[0038] In certain such embodiments, when the UE is in CM_Connected mode, if the AMF determines that the UE context needs to be updated, the AMF provides the AF measurement requirement to the NG-RAN via the UE Context Modification or NGAP Downlink NAS Transfer message. If the UE is not in CM_Connected mode, when the UE does move to CM_Connected, the AMF provides the AF measurement requirement to the NG-RAN in the initial UE context setup.

[0039] In some embodiments, the NG-RAN uses the received AF measurement requirements to configure the measurements for the UE. If an index is provided, it may be mapped to a specific configuration by the NG-RAN's local configuration.

[0040] For example, FIG. 2 illustrates a data flow diagram of a second portion of the example procedure for provisioning a UE within a wireless network with a data measurement configuration of FIG. 1, according to embodiments described herein. Accordingly, in some embodiments, a UDM 206 can be similar to or correspond to the UDM 102 of FIG. 1. In the illustrated example, the UDM 206 checks whether user consent is allowed for an AF to perform UE data collection and whether the serving AMF is responsible for the tracking area in the measurement requirement (e.g., at block 208) . If the user consent is allowed for data collection, and if the AMF 204 is responsible for the tracking area requested by the data collection requirements, the UDM 206 notifies the AMF 204 of the SDM modification and measurement requirements (e.g., via Nudm_SDM_Notification 210 including AF measurement requirements 212) .

[0041] In some embodiments, if the AF measurement requirements 212 specify an area of interest more granular than a tracking area, the AMF 204 may initiate a location reporting procedure with an NG-RAN 202 to report when the UE is in the area of interest (e.g., as seen at block 214) . The AMF 204 can then decide to update NG-RAN 202 with AF measurement requirements (e.g., as seen at block 216) .

[0042] When the UE is in CM_Connected mode, if the AMF 204 determines that the UE context needs to be updated, the AMF 204 provides the AF measurement  requirements 212 to the NG-RAN 202 via either a UE context modification 218 message or a next generation application protocol (NGAP) downlink NAS transfer 220 message.

[0043] In certain embodiments, if the UE is not yet in CM_Connected mode, when the UE does move to CM_Connected, the AMF 204 provides the AF measurement requirements 212 to the NG-RAN 202 in an Initial UE context setup 222 (e.g., as seen at block 224) .

[0044] In some embodiments, the NG-RAN 202 uses the received AF measurement requirements 212 to configure measurements for the UE. If an index is provided, the index can be mapped to a specific configuration by the NG-RAN's local configuration.

[0045] In certain embodiments, an AF can invoke the ADMF interface directly (or through an NEF) to provide AF measurement requirements, and the ADMF stores the AF measurement requirements and interacts with the UDM to obtain the current AMF that is serving the UE. The ADMF may use the UDM's UE Context Management (CM) service API to retrieve the serving AMF for the UE.

[0046] If the UE is not registered (i.e., the UDM does not have CM information) , the ADMF can register with the UDM for a UE reachability event. In certain such embodiments, the event filter is enhanced to specify whether a tracking area level location or a more granular location is to be used. Based on the requested location granularity, the UDM can initiate the AMF location information service. The UDM then notifies the ADMF of the AMF ID where the UE is currently reachable.

[0047] In some embodiments, the ADMF invokes the AMF parameter provisioning service to provide the AF measurement requirements. For example, the AMF may use one of three N2 messages (Initial Context Setup, UE Context Modification, or NGAP Downlink NAS Transfer) to update the AF measurement requirement to the NG-RAN. In some embodiments, the NG-RAN's actions upon receiving the AF measurement requirement can be the same as described with respect to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2.

[0048] For example, FIG. 3 illustrates a data flow diagram of an example procedure for provisioning a UE within a wireless network with a data measurement configuration, according to embodiments described herein. This example includes communications between an AMF 302, a UDM 304, an ADMF 306, and an AF 308. The AF 308 invokes the ADMF 306 interface directly (e.g., through Nadmf_AIMLDataCollection_Configures 310 message) (or through an NEF) to provide AF measurement requirements 312 (as described with respect to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2) .

[0049] In some embodiments, the ADMF 306 checks whether the AF 308 is authorized to provide measurement requirements (e.g., at block 314) .

[0050] The ADMF 306 stores the AF measurement requirements 312 (e.g., at block 316) and interacts with the UDM 304 to determine the current AMF serving the UE. The ADMF 306 may retrieve the serving AMF using an Nudm_UECM_Get Req (UE ID) 318 message and an Nudm_UECM_Get Rsp (AMF ID) 320 response message.

[0051] If a UE is not registered (as denoted by elements within bracket 328) , meaning the UDM 304 lacks CM information for the UE, the ADMF 306 can register for a UE reachability event via a Nudm_EventExposure_Susbscribe (UE reachability) 322 message to the UDM 304. In some cases, the event filter can be customized to request a tracking area or granular area of interest 324. If the UE location at a tracking area is required, then the serving AMF information can be exposed (e.g., as seen at block 326) .

[0052] Contingent on the granularity of location requested, the UDM 304 can initiate AMF location information service, for instance, if a more granular location of a UE is required (e.g., as seen at block 330) . The UDM 304 can notify the ADMF 306 of serving the AMF 302 where the UE is currently reachable via a Nudm_EventExposure_Notify (AMF ID) 332 message.

[0053] In some embodiments, the ADMF 306 can then check whether the AMF ID is matching with the tracking area provisioned in the AF measurement requirements 312 (e.g., as seen at block 334) . If matching, the ADMF 306 can contact the AMF 302 to provide AF measurement requirements 312 via the Namf_ParameterProvisioing_Req 336 communication.

[0054] In some embodiments, the AMF 302 can use any of three N2 messages to provide updated AF measurement requirements 312 to the NG-RAN, such as Initial Context Setup, UE Context Modification, or NGAP Downlink NAS Transfer.

[0055] Example process for handling an AF data collection request.

[0056] In certain embodiments, a method for one or more NF in a CN to handle data collection requests from an AF external to the CN (e.g., according to FIG. 1, FIG. 2, and / or FIG. 3) includes receiving, from the AF external to the CN, configuration data including AF measurement requirements for one or more user equipment (UE) in an area of interest. In response to verifying that the AF is authorized to provide the AF measurement requirements to the CN, the NF is configured for: storing the AF measurement requirements within the CN; determining an Access and Mobility  Management Function (AMF) in the area of interest serving the one or more UE; and sending the AF measurement requirements to the AMF for configuring the one or more UE with the AF measurement requirements through a Radio Access Network (RAN) .

[0057] In certain such embodiments, the one or more NF includes at least an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML) Data Management Function (ADMF) and a Unified Data Management (UDM) , and wherein the ADMF is configured to receive the configuration data from the AF and verify that the AF is authorized to provide the AF measurement requirements to the CN.

[0058] In certain embodiments of the method, storing the AF measurement requirements comprises sending a request, from the ADMF to the UDM, to update subscriber data associated with the one or more UE with the AF measurement requirements. In certain such embodiments, determining the AMF in the area of interest serving the one or more UE comprises: determining, at the UDM, that user consent for the one or more UE is allowed for the AF to perform UE data collection; and determining, at the UDM, that the AMF serving the one or more UE is responsible for the area of interest identified in the configuration data from the AF.

[0059] In certain embodiments of the method, storing the AF measurement requirements comprises storing the AF measurement requirements at the ADMF. In certain such embodiments, determining the AMF in the area of interest serving the one or more UE comprises: sending a UE context management (CM) request, from the ADMF to the UDM, identifying the one or more UE; receiving, at the ADMF from the UDM, an identity of the AMF serving the one or more UE; and verifying, at the ADMF, that the identity of the AMF is associated with the area of interest in the configuration data from the AF. In addition, or in other embodiments, the method further includes, at the UDM: in response to receiving the UE CM request, determining that the UDM does not have CM information for the one or more UE; in response to notifying the ADMF that the UDM does not have the CM information, receiving a registration request from the ADMF for the ADMF to register with the UDM for a UE reachability event, wherein the registration request includes the area of interest comprising a tracking area or a granular location within the tracking area; determining the identity of the AMF based on the tracking area or from an AMF location information service based on the granular location; and sending the identity of the AMF to the ADMF. In certain embodiments, the ADMF performs the sending of the AF measurement requirements to the AMF in  response to the ADMF verifying that the identity of the AMF is associated with the area of interest in the configuration data from the AF.

[0060] In certain embodiments of the method, the ADMF is implemented in an enhanced data collection application function (DCAF) in the CN, an enhanced network exposure function (NEF) in the CN, or a separate AF deployed by a network operator in the CN.

[0061] In certain embodiments of the method, the ADMF is configured to receive the configuration data from the AF through a network exposure function (NEF) in the CN.

[0062] In certain embodiments, the method further includes: receiving, at the AMF from the UDM, the AF measurement requirements including the area of interest comprising a tracking area or a granular location within the tracking area; and when the area of interest comprises the granular location, initiating a location procedure with the RAN to determine with the UE is in the area of interest. In certain such embodiments, the method further includes: determining, at the AMF, to update the RAN with the AF measurement requirements; and updating the AF measurement requirements to the RAN using an initial context setup message, a UE context modification message, or a next generation application protocol (NGAP) downlink non access stratum (NAS) transfer message. The method may further include updating the AF measurement requirements to the RAN in response to determining, at the AMF, that the one or more UE has moved to a connected state.

[0063] In certain embodiments of the method, the AF measurement requirements comprise at least one of: one or more UE identifier (ID) ; the area of interest comprising at least one of a tracking area or a granular location within the tracking area; one or more model ID corresponding to the one or more UE; one or more vendor ID corresponding to the one or more UE; an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML) operation index associated with at least one of a type of AIML operation to be performed and an identity of the AF; a granular measurement configuration associated with at least one of a secondary cell (SCell) configuration for a selected frequency range (FR) and a cell type; an AF ID; and a time window for at least one of UE data collection and measurement reporting.

[0064] Example Architecture.

[0065] FIG. 4 illustrates an example architecture of a wireless communication system 400, according to embodiments disclosed herein. The following description is provided  for an example wireless communication system 400 that operates in conjunction with the LTE system standards and / or 5G or NR system standards as provided by 3GPP technical specifications.

[0066] As shown by FIG. 4, the wireless communication system 400 includes UE 402 and UE 404 (although any number of UEs may be used) . In this example, the UE 402 and the UE 404 are illustrated as smartphones (e.g., handheld touchscreen mobile computing devices connectable to one or more cellular networks) , but may also comprise any mobile or non-mobile computing device configured for wireless communication.

[0067] The UE 402 and UE 404 may be configured to communicatively couple with a RAN 406. In embodiments, the RAN 406 may be NG-RAN, E-UTRAN, etc. The UE 402 and UE 404 utilize connections (or channels) (shown as connection 408 and connection 410, respectively) with the RAN 406, each of which comprises a physical communications interface. The RAN 406 can include one or more base stations (such as base station 412 and base station 414) that enable the connection 408 and connection 410.

[0068] In this example, the connection 408 and connection 410 are air interfaces to enable such communicative coupling, and may be consistent with RAT (s) used by the RAN 406, such as, for example, an LTE and / or NR.

[0069] In some embodiments, the UE 402 and UE 404 may also directly exchange communication data via a sidelink interface 416. The UE 404 is shown to be configured to access an access point (shown as AP 418) via connection 420. By way of example, the connection 420 can comprise a local wireless connection, such as a connection consistent with any IEEE 802.11 protocol, wherein the AP 418 may comprise a  router. In this example, the AP 418 may be connected to another network (for example, the Internet) without going through a CN 424.

[0070] In embodiments, the UE 402 and UE 404 can be configured to communicate using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication signals with each other or with the base station 412 and / or the base station 414 over a multicarrier communication channel in accordance with various communication techniques, such as, but not limited to, an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) communication technique (e.g., for downlink communications) or a single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) communication technique (e.g., for uplink and ProSe or sidelink communications) , although the scope of the embodiments is  not limited in this respect. The OFDM signals can comprise a plurality of orthogonal subcarriers.

[0071] In some embodiments, all or parts of the base station 412 or base station 414 may be implemented as one or more software entities running on server computers as part of a virtual network. In addition, or in other embodiments, the base station 412 or base station 414 may be configured to communicate with one another via interface 422. In embodiments where the wireless communication system 400 is an LTE system (e.g., when the CN 424 is an EPC) , the interface 422 may be an X2 interface. The X2 interface may be defined between two or more base stations (e.g., two or more eNBs and the like) that connect to an EPC, and / or between two eNBs connecting to the EPC. In embodiments where the wireless communication system 400 is an NR system (e.g., when CN 424 is a 5GC) , the interface 422 may be an Xn interface. The Xn interface is defined between two or more base stations (e.g., two or more gNBs and the like) that connect to 5GC, between a base station 412 (e.g., a gNB) connecting to 5GC and an eNB, and / or between two eNBs connecting to 5GC (e.g., CN 424) .

[0072] The RAN 406 is shown to be communicatively coupled to the CN 424. The CN 424 may comprise one or more network elements 426, which are configured to offer various data and telecommunications services to customers / subscribers (e.g., users of UE 402 and UE 404) who are connected to the CN 424 via the RAN 406. The components of the CN 424 may be implemented in one physical device or separate physical devices including components to read and execute instructions from a machine-readable or computer-readable medium (e.g., a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium) .

[0073] In embodiments, the CN 424 may be an EPC, and the RAN 406 may be connected with the CN 424 via an S1 interface 428. In embodiments, the S1 interface 428 may be split into two parts, an S1 user plane (S1-U) interface, which carries traffic data between the base station 412 or base station 414 and a serving gateway (S-GW) , and the S1-MME interface, which is a signaling interface between the base station 412 or base station 414 and mobility management entities (MMEs) .

[0074] In embodiments, the CN 424 may be a 5GC, and the RAN 406 may be connected with the CN 424 via an NG interface 428. In embodiments, the NG interface 428 may be split into two parts, an NG user plane (NG-U) interface, which carries traffic data between the base station 412 or base station 414 and a user plane function (UPF) , and the S1 control plane (NG-C) interface, which is a signaling interface between the  base station 412 or base station 414 and access and mobility management functions (AMFs) .

[0075] Generally, an application server 430 may be an element offering applications that use internet protocol (IP) bearer resources with the CN 424 (e.g., packet switched data services) . The application server 430 can also be configured to support one or more communication services (e.g., VoIP sessions, group communication sessions, etc. ) for the UE 402 and UE 404 via the CN 424. The application server 430 may communicate with the CN 424 through an IP communications interface 432.

[0076] FIG. 5 illustrates a system 500 for performing signaling 534 between a wireless device 502 and a network device 518, according to embodiments disclosed herein. The system 500 may be a portion of a wireless communications system as herein described. The wireless device 502 may be, for example, a UE of a wireless communication system. The network device 518 may be, for example, a base station (e.g., an eNB or a gNB) of a wireless communication system.

[0077] The wireless device 502 may include one or more processor (s) 504. The processor (s) 504 may execute instructions such that various operations of the wireless device 502 are performed, as described herein. The processor (s) 504 may include one or more baseband processors implemented using, for example, a central processing unit (CPU) , a digital signal processor (DSP) , an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) , a controller, a field programmable gate array (FPGA) device, another hardware device, a firmware device, or any combination thereof configured to perform the operations described herein.

[0078] The wireless device 502 may include a memory 506. The memory 506 may be a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium that stores instructions 508 (which may include, for example, the instructions being executed by the processor (s) 504) . The instructions 508 may also be referred to as program code or a computer program. The memory 506 may also store data used by, and results computed by, the processor (s) 504.

[0079] The wireless device 502 may include one or more transceiver (s) 510 that may include radio frequency (RF) transmitter circuitry and / or receiver circuitry that use the antenna (s) 512 of the wireless device 502 to facilitate signaling (e.g., the signaling 534) to and / or from the wireless device 502 with other devices (e.g., the network device 518) according to corresponding RATs.

[0080] The wireless device 502 may include one or more antenna (s) 512 (e.g., one, two, four, or more) . For embodiments with multiple antenna (s) 512, the wireless device 502 may leverage the spatial diversity of such multiple antenna (s) 512 to send and / or receive multiple different data streams on the same time and frequency resources. This behavior may be referred to as, for example, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) behavior (referring to the multiple antennas used at each of a transmitting device and a receiving device that enable this aspect) . MIMO transmissions by the wireless device 502 may be accomplished according to precoding (or digital beamforming) that is applied at the wireless device 502 that multiplexes the data streams across the antenna (s) 512 according to known or assumed channel characteristics such that each data stream is received with an appropriate signal strength relative to other streams and at a desired location in the spatial domain (e.g., the location of a receiver associated with that data stream) . Certain embodiments may use single user MIMO (SU-MIMO) methods (where the data streams are all directed to a single receiver) and / or multi user MIMO (MU-MIMO) methods (where individual data streams may be directed to individual (different) receivers in different locations in the spatial domain) .

[0081] In certain embodiments having multiple antennas, the wireless device 502 may implement analog beamforming techniques, whereby phases of the signals sent by the antenna (s) 512 are relatively adjusted such that the (joint) transmission of the antenna (s) 512 can be directed (this is sometimes referred to as beam steering) .

[0082] The wireless device 502 may include one or more interface (s) 514. The interface (s) 514 may be used to provide input to or output from the wireless device 502. For example, a wireless device 502 that is a UE may include interface (s) 514 such as microphones, speakers, a touchscreen, buttons, and the like in order to allow for input and / or output to the UE by a user of the UE. Other interfaces of such a UE may be made up of transmitters, receivers, and other circuitry (e.g., other than the transceiver (s) 510 / antenna (s) 512 already described) that allow for communication between the UE and other devices and may operate according to known protocols (e.g.,  and the like) .

[0083] The wireless device 502 may include a data collection module 516. The data collection module 516 may be implemented via hardware, software, or combinations thereof. For example, the data collection module 516 may be implemented as a processor, circuit, and / or instructions 508 stored in the memory 506 and executed by the  processor (s) 504. In some examples, the data collection module 516 may be integrated within the processor (s) 504 and / or the transceiver (s) 510. For example, the data collection module 516 may be implemented by a combination of software components (e.g., executed by a DSP or a general processor) and hardware components (e.g., logic gates and circuitry) within the processor (s) 504 or the transceiver (s) 510.
