Description

SMART SOCKETS CONFIGURED TO AUTO IDENTIFY AND CLASSIFY APPLIANCES THAT ARE PLUGGED INTO THE RESPECTIVE SMART SOCKETSTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to smart sockets, and more particularly to smart sockets that are configured to identify and classify an appliance that is plugged into the respective smart socket.BACKGROUND

[0002] Smart sockets provide power to a variety of different devices plugged into the smart sockets. Smart sockets can include circuitry that allows a user to remotely control the smart socket to control whether the smart socket provides power to a device that is plugged into the receptacle of the smart socket. In some cases, a smart socket may be programmed to provide power to a receptacle of the smart socket during a particular time frame and to not provide power to the receptacle during other time frames. Some appliances that are plugged into smart sockets may be appliances that need to be powered on at all times. Some appliances that are plugged into smart sockets may be appliances that can be safely shut off at some times. Some appliances that are plugged into smart sockets may draw infrequent but high peak power, while others appliances may draw lower more frequent or continuous power. These are just examples. Manually identifying each appliance that is plugged into each smart socket and classifying each appliance into one or more predetermined appliance categories can be a time-consuming, tedious and error prone process. What would be desirable are ways to automatically identify and classify appliances that are plugged into smart sockets.SUMMARY

[0003] The present disclosure relates generally to smart sockets, and more particularly to smart sockets that are configured to identify and classify an appliance that is plugged into a smart socket. An example may be found in a smart socket device. The illustrative smart socket device includes a socket receptacle for receiving a plug from an appliance, a measurement circuit that is configured to sample a current and a voltage delivered by the socket receptacle to the appliance, a memory storing a trained AI model, a communication circuit that is configured to communicate with a remote device, and a controller that is operatively coupled to the socket receptacle, the  measurement circuit, the memory and the communication circuit. The controller is configured to apply the trained AI model to classify the appliance that is plugged into the socket receptacle into one or more predetermined appliance categories based at least in part on the current and / or the voltage sampled by the measurement circuit. The controller is configured to communicate an indication of the classification of the appliance that is plugged into the socket receptacle to the remote device via the communication circuit.

[0017] The following description should be read with reference to the drawings, in which like elements in different drawings are numbered in like fashion. The drawings, which are not necessarily to scale, depict examples that are not intended to limit the scope of the disclosure. Although examples are illustrated for the various elements, those skilled in the art will recognize that many of the examples provided have suitable alternatives that may be utilized.

[0018] All numbers are herein assumed to be modified by the term “about” , unless the content clearly dictates otherwise. The recitation of numerical ranged by endpoints includes all numbers subsumed within that range (e.g., 1 to 5 includes, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.75, 3, 3.8, 4, and 5) .

[0019] As used in this specification and the appended claims, the singular forms “a” , “an” , and “the” include the plural referents unless the content clearly dictates otherwise. As used in this specification and the appended claims, the term “or” is generally employed in its sense including “and / or” unless the content clearly dictates otherwise.

[0020] It is noted that references in the specification to “an embodiment” , “some embodiments” , “other embodiments” , etc., indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but every embodiment may not necessarily include the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an embodiment, it is contemplated that the feature, structure, or characteristic may be applied to other embodiments whether or not explicitly described unless clearly stated to the contrary.
