Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure relate to devices, methods, and computer storage medium for communication. In the solution, a terminal device may determine a first value for a parameter associated with one or more transmission occasions based on an A-IoT configuration from a network device. The terminal device may transmit the first value for the parameter to an A-IoT device, and thus the A-IoT device may determine a transmission occasion of an A-IoT signal based on the first value for the parameter. As such, a transmission occasion of the A-IoT signal can be controlled by the network device and thus a collision for the A-IoT transmissions can be reduced.

[0045] The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the 1G, 2G, 2.5G,  2.75G, 3G, 4G, 4.5G, 5G, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or 6G networks.

[0046] The term “circuitry” used herein may refer to hardware circuits and / or combinations of hardware circuits and software. For example, the circuitry may be a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuits with software / firmware. As a further example, the circuitry may be any portions of hardware processors with software including digital signal processor (s) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a terminal device or a network device, to perform various functions. In a still further example, the circuitry may be hardware circuits and or processors, such as a microprocessor or a portion of a microprocessor, that requires software / firmware for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation. As used herein, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (s) or a portion of a hardware circuit or processor (s) and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware.

[0047] As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The term “includes” and its variants are to be read as open terms that mean “includes, but is not limited to. ” The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on. ” The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment. ” The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment. ” The terms “first, ” “second, ” and the like may refer to different or same objects. Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below.

[0048] In some examples, values, procedures, or apparatus are referred to as “best, ” “lowest, ” “highest, ” “minimum, ” “maximum, ” or the like. It will be appreciated that such descriptions are intended to indicate that a selection among many used functional alternatives can be made, and such selections need not be better, smaller, higher, or otherwise preferable to other selections.

[0049] It is to be noted that, in the present disclosure, if not specified otherwise, the term “OFDM symbol” indicates CP-OFDM symbol, or any variant of OFDM symbol, e.g., DFT-s-OFDM, GI-OFDM, zero CP OFDM, unique word OFDM, etc.

[0050] A study item on Ambient IoT has completed in 3GPP Rel-18, which provides a terminological and scoping framework for future discussions of Ambient IoT. This has defined representative use cases, deployment scenarios, connectivity topologies, Ambient IoT devices, design targets, and required functionalities. It also conducted a preliminary  feasibility assessment and gave recommendations for down-selection in setting the scope of Rel-19 radio access network (RAN) work group (WG) level study. 3GPP Rel-19 A-IoT study targets a further assessment at RAN WG-level of Ambient IoT, a new 3GPP IoT technology, suitable for deployment in a 3GPP system, which relies on ultra-low complexity devices with ultra-low power consumption for the very-low end IoT applications.

[0051] To support ambient IoT devices in the NR system, new features should be introduced, e.g., new waveform, new frame structure, new physical layer and higher layer procedures, etc. A random access procedure may be supported by A-IoT devices. For example, a Msg1 transmission may be triggered by a paging message transmitted by a reader, and the transmission may follow a slotted ALOHA mechanism.

[0052] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution of communication. As such, a transmission occasion of the A-IoT signal can be controlled by the network device through the A-IoT configuration and thus a collision for the A-IoT transmission can be reduced. Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0053] FIG. 1A illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication network 100 in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1A, the communication network 100 may include A-IoT devices 110-1 to 110-M (separately or collectively referred to as an A-IoT device 110) , a terminal device 120, a network device 130 and a core network (CN) entity 140.

[0054] For ease of description, the A-IoT device 110 may be referred to as a Device in some cases, and the terminal device 120 and the network device 130 may be collectively or separately referred to as a Reader in some cases. It is to be noted that although a base station (BS) and / or user equipment (UE) is illustrated as a reader, the device type of the reader can be in a different type which is not limited for this aspect.

[0055] In some examples, a transmission from the Device (i.e. ambient IoT device) to the Reader (the terminal device 120 or the network device 130) may be referred to as a device-to-reader (D2R) transmission or an uplink (UL) transmission. In some examples, a  transmission from the Reader to the Device may be referred to as a reader-to-device (R2D) transmission or a downlink (DL) transmission.

[0056] The CN entity 140 may be a network function (NF) in CN, such as a 5GC or a 6G core network. For example, the CN entity 140 may be implemented as an A-IoT function (AIF) or an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) of a 5GC.

[0057] In some examples, the network 100 may also include an additional carrier wave node (CWN) , which may transmit carrier wave e.g., for harvesting the A-IoT device 110. In some examples, the CWN may be a device that is different from the terminal device 120 or the network device 130. In some other examples, the CWN may be implemented as one of the terminal device 120 or the network device 130. For example, the CWN may be a UE, a relay node, a gNB, or a network controlled node. For example, the CWN may be outside topology or inside topology.

[0058] Communications in the environment, between a network device and a terminal device for example, between a network device / aterminal device and an A-IoT device for example, may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Divided Multiple Address (CDMA) , Frequency Divided Multiple Address (FDMA) , Time Divided Multiple Address (TDMA) , Frequency Divided Duplexer (FDD) , Time Divided Duplexer (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Divided Multiple Access (OFDMA) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0059] Embodiments of the present disclosure can be applied to any suitable scenarios. For example, embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented at reduced capability NR devices. Alternatively, embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented in one of the followings: NR multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) , NR sidelink enhancements, NR systems with frequency above 52.6GHz, an extending NR operation up to 71GHz, narrow band-Internet of Thing (NB-IOT)  / enhanced Machine Type  Communication (eMTC) over non-terrestrial networks (NTN) , NTN, UE power saving enhancements, NR coverage enhancement, NB-IoT and LTE-MTC, Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) , NR Multicast and Broadcast Services, or enhancements on Multi-Radio Dual-Connectivity.

[0060] It is to be understood that the numbers of devices and their connection relationships and types shown in FIG. 1A are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The environment may include any suitable numbers of devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0061] The Ambient IoT refers to a new class of IoT devices primarily powered by harvesting ambient energy from radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other viable ambient energy source. FIG. 1B illustrates an example schematic of a communication 105 between an A-IoT device 110 and a Reader 112 (which may be the terminal device 120 or the network device 130) . It is to be noted that although the reader is illustrated as a UE in FIG. 1B, the device type of the reader can be in a different type which is not limited for this aspect.

[0062] The Ambient IoT is an extension of the existing IoT. Ambient IoT devices carry out many of the same functions as IoT devices and target many of the same use cases but require additional design choices to meet solution demands. By relying on energy harvested from ambient sources, the Ambient IoT makes it possible to develop lower-cost, smaller, and maintenance-free devices, allowing the IoT to become more scalable in existing use cases and in use cases still to be developed.

[0063] Harvesting energy from ambient sources generates only minimal amounts of power. This creates the inherent requirement for Ambient IoT devices to be less complex and more power efficient. The A-IOT device does not need to actively generate a signal, but communicates by reflecting electromagnetic waves generated by other devices.

[0064] The following connectivity topologies (topology 1 and topology 2) for Ambient IoT networks and devices are defined for the purposes of the study on ambient IoT in RAN. In all these topologies, the Ambient IoT device may be provided with a carrier wave from other node (s) either inside or outside the topology. The links in each topology may be bidirectional or unidirectional.

[0065] FIG. 1C illustrates an example schematic of deployment scenario 1 with topology 1 for an A-IoT device. In Topology 1, the ambient IoT device directly and bidirectionally communicates with a base station. The BS serves as the Reader for the ambient IoT device  and performs operation (e.g., inventory, read, write, etc. ) to the ambient IoT device. The communication between the base station and the ambient IoT device includes Ambient IoT data and / or signalling. This topology includes the possibility that the BS transmitting to the Ambient IoT device is a different from the BS receiving from the Ambient IoT device. In topology 1, the base station and coexistence characteristics may include Micro-cell, co-site, etc.

[0066] FIG. 1D illustrates an example schematic of deployment scenario 2 with topology 2 for an A-IoT device. In Topology 2, the Ambient IoT device communicates bidirectionally with an intermediate node between the device and the base station. The intermediate node serves as the Reader for the ambient IoT device and performs operation (e.g., inventory, read, write, etc. ) to the ambient IoT device. In this topology, the intermediate node can be a relay, IAB node, UE, repeater, etc. which is capable of Ambient IoT. The intermediate node transfers Ambient IoT data and / or signalling between the base station and the Ambient IoT device. In topology 2, the base station and coexistence characteristics may include Micro-cell, co-site, etc. In topology 2, the location of intermediate node may be indoor.

[0067] An overall objective of the study on ambient IoT shall be to study a harmonized air interface design with minimized differences (where necessary) for Ambient IoT to enable the following devices:

[0068] ○ Device 1: ~1 μW peak power consumption, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, neither DL nor UL amplification in the device. The device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally.

[0069] ○ Device 2a: ≤ a few hundred μW peak power consumption, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally.

[0070] ○ Device 2b: ≤ a few hundred μW peak power consumption, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The device’s UL transmission is generated internally by the device.

[0071] An A-IoT contention-based access procedure initiated by the reader is used when a response is expected from multiple devices that are intended to be identified. For the A-IoT  contention-based access procedure, at least slotted-SLOHA based access is studied. In the random access procedure, the A-IoT device sends an A-IoT Msg1. For example, the A-IoT device may send an ID to the reader, or may send Device ID and / or any other upper layer data. For example, the A-IoT Msg 1 may comprise a random ID generated by the A-IoT device. However, how to determine a transmission occasion should be studied.

[0072] In the present disclosure, the parameter in the present disclosure may be a parameter that a Reader uses to regulate the probability of A-IoT response. For instance, the parameter may be Q parameter. In some examples, the parameter may be used for determining a transmission occasion of an A-IoT signal (such as Msg1 for random access) . For example, a value of the parameter may indicate a number of bits or a number of slots.

[0073] In the present disclosure, an A-IoT transmission may refer to a transmission of an A-IoT signal, which may be a D2R signal from the A-IoT device to the Reader or an R2D signal from the Reader to the A-IoT device. For example, a D2R signal may include an A-IoT Msg1.

[0074] FIG. 2 illustrates a signalling chart illustrating communication process 200 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 200 may involve an A-IoT device 110, a terminal device 120, and a network device 130 as discussed with reference to FIG. 1A. It would be appreciated that the process 200 may be applied to other communication scenarios, which will not be described in detail. For example, the process 200 may be applied for topology shown in FIG. 1D. For example, the terminal device 120 may also be referred to as an intermediate UE.

[0075] In the process 200, the network device 130 transmits, and the terminal device 120 receives, an A-IoT configuration at 210. In some implementations, the A-IoT configuration includes at least one candidate value for a parameter, or resource allocation information for at least one A-IoT signal.

[0076] In some implementations, the A-IoT configuration includes at least one candidate value for the parameter, e.g., N candidate values where N is a positive integer.

[0077] In some implementations, the A-IoT configuration includes resource allocation information for A-IoT transmissions. In some examples, the resource allocation information may include time domain resource allocation for A-IoT transmissions and / or frequency resource allocation for A-IoT transmissions. For example, the A-IoT transmissions may comprise one or more transmissions from reader to the A-IoT device  and / or one or more transmissions from the A-IoT device to reader. For example, the time domain resource allocation for A-IoT transmissions may indicate a maximum time duration that the terminal device 120 can be used for A-IoT transmissions. For example, the maximum time duration comprises time duration of one or more gaps between A-IoT transmissions. For example, the time domain resource allocation for A-IoT transmissions may indicate a maximum allowed number of transmission occasions for A-IoT transmissions. For instance, each transmission occasion may be a slot or may be within a slot. For example, the frequency resource allocation for A-IoT transmissions may indicate a number of frequency bands for A-IoT transmissions.

[0078] In the process 200, the terminal device 120 determines a first value for the parameter based on the A-IoT configuration at 220. The first value for the parameter may be associated with one or more transmission occasions for the at least one A-IoT signal. In some examples, the first value may also be referred to as an initial value for the parameter. For example, if the first value is represented as Q, it may indicate Q or Q+1 transmission occasions or 2Q transmission occasions.

[0079] In some implementations, the A-IoT configuration includes at least one candidate value for the parameter, e.g., N candidate values where N is a positive integer. In some examples, the network device 130 may determine the at least one candidate value based on its implementation, or some other information or manners, which is not limited in the present disclosure.

[0080] In some example embodiments, the A-IoT configuration may include a single candidate value for the parameter, that is N=1. In some examples, the single candidate value (or the A-IoT configuration) may be included in lower layer signalling, such as a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) or a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) . For example, the terminal device 120 may take the single candidate value as the first value.

[0081] In some example embodiments, the A-IoT configuration may include multiple candidate values for the parameter, that is N>1. In some examples, the terminal device 120 may determine (e.g., select) one value from the multiple candidate values as the first value. In some examples, the multiple candidate values (or the A-IoT configuration) may be included in higher layer signalling, such as a radio resource control (RRC) message.

[0082] In some examples, each of the multiple candidate values may be associated with a resource allocation configuration, and the terminal device 120 may determine the first value  based on a specific resource allocation configuration. For example, the resource allocation configuration may indicate one or more of the following: a number of slots for the at least one A-IoT signal, a number of frequency resources for the at least one A-IoT signal, a duration of a transmission occasion for the at least one A-IoT signal, or a modulation and / or coding scheme (MCS) for the at least one A-IoT signal. For example, the terminal device 120 may select a first value if an associated resource allocation configuration is used.

[0083] In some examples, a table may be predefined or preconfigured by the network device 130, and the table maps different candidate values to different resource allocation configurations. For example, a row or a column may indicate the mapping. In some examples, the terminal device 120 may determine the first value as a candidate value that maps to a specific resource allocation configuration based on the table.

[0084] In some examples, each of the multiple candidate values may be associated with subgrouping information, and the terminal device 120 may determine the first value based on specific subgrouping information associated with the A-IoT device 110. For example, subgrouping information may include one or more of: a number of a plurality of A-IoT devices, a number of subgroups, a number of A-IoT devices in a subgroup. For example, the terminal device 120 may select the first value if an associated subgrouping information is determined to be used.

[0085] In some examples, the terminal device 120 may select one value from the multiple candidate values and take the selected one as the first value, e.g., based on its implementations, or based on its measurement / assessment of the A-IoT devices, or based on an indication from the network device 130. For example, the terminal device 120 may determine a quantity of A-IoT devices in its communication range, and further select the first value based on the determined quantity of A-IoT devices. For example, the network device 130 may transmit an indication (e.g., a PDCCH indication such as downlink control information (DCI) ) which indicates the first value.

[0086] In some embodiments, if the terminal device 120 determines to update the value for the parameter, the terminal device 120 may select another value (e.g., a value different from the first value) from the multiple values. In some examples, after transmitting the first value to the A-IoT device 110, the terminal device 120 may update the value, and then transmit the updated value to the A-IoT device 110.

[0087] In some implementations, the A-IoT configuration includes resource configuration  information for A-IoT transmissions. In some examples, the resource configuration information may indicate time domain resource allocation for A-IoT transmissions, such as a maximum time duration that can be used by the terminal device 120 for A-IoT transmissions. In some examples, the resource configuration information may indicate frequency resource allocation for A-IoT transmission, such as a number of frequency bands for A-IoT transmissions.

[0088] In some examples, the terminal device 120 may determine a range of values for the parameter based on the resource allocation information; and then determine the first value from the range, e.g., based on a measurement or an assessment for a plurality of A-IoT devices or based on its implementation. For example, the range may have a lower boundary Qmin and an upper boundary Qmax.

[0089] For example, the terminal device 120 may determine a maximum value being an upper boundary of the range based on a maximum allowed number of transmission occasions for the A-IoT signal. For instance, if the maximum allowed number of transmission occasions is represented as an integer N2, then the maximum value should be smaller than the maximum allowed number of transmission occasions, i.e., Qmax<N2. For instance, the maximum allowed number of transmission occasions is indicated by the resource allocation information, or is determined based on a maximum time duration comprised in the resource allocation information. In some instances, the maximum allowed number of transmission occasions may be determined based on the maximum time duration indicated by the time domain resource allocation, a time duration for each transmission occasion, and a total time duration for other transmissions and gaps. For example, the maximum allowed number of transmission occasions may be determined by N2 = floor [ (T0 –T1)  / T2] , where T0 is the maximum time duration, T2 is the time duration of each transmission occasion, and T1 is the total time duration for other transmissions and gaps (e.g., transmissions from reader to device, gaps between transmissions, etc. ) .

[0090] For example, the terminal device 120 may determine a maximum value being an upper boundary of the range based on a number of rounds of A-IoT procedures, and / or a frequency resource allocation for the A-IoT signal. For instance, the number of rounds of A-IoT procedures may be N3 rounds, if the maximum time duration is allocated for N3 rounds of A-IoT procedure, then Qmax should be equal to or smaller than a value determined based on N2 / N3. For instance, a round of A-IoT procedure may be an inventory / command / paging procedure. For instance, a number of frequency bands may be N4 frequency bands,  if the maximum time duration is allocated for N4 frequency bands, then Qmax should be equal to or smaller than a value determined based on N2 / N4.

[0091] For example, a minimum value being a lower boundary of the range is predefined or pre-configured by the network device 130. For instance, Qmin=0.

[0092] In the process 200, the terminal device 120 transmits, and the A-IoT device 110 receives, the first value for the parameter at 230. In some examples, the terminal device 120 may transmit a paging message which includes the first value for the parameter.

[0093] In the process 200, the A-IoT device 110 generates a random number based on the first value at 240. In some examples, the first value may indicate a number of bits, and the random number may be not smaller than 0 and not larger than 2Q-1 (0~2Q-1) . in some examples, the first value may indicate a number of slots, and the random number may be not smaller than 0 and not larger than Q-1 (0~Q-1) .

[0094] In the process 200, the A-IoT device 110 determines a transmission occasion based on the random number at 250. In addition, the A-IoT device 110 transmits, and the terminal device 120 receives, an A-IoT signal on the transmission occasion at 260.

[0095] In some examples, the A-IoT device 110 may set a counter based on the random number, and transmit the A-IoT signal in a transmission occasion when the counter equals to 0. In some examples, the A-IoT device 110 may use the k-th or (k+1) -th transmission occasion after the end of the paging message to be the determined transmission occasion for the A-IoT signal transmission. For example, k may be the random number. For example, the terminal device 120 may further transmit a further paging message including a second value to the A-IoT device 110 at 245, and the A-IoT device 110 may determine the transmission occasion as the k-th transmission occasion after the end of the further paging message in case the second value equals to the random number or a difference between the second value and the random number is equal to a predefined or predetermined value, or is smaller than an offset.

[0096] As such, the value for the parameter may be determined based on an A-IoT configuration from the network device, therefore, the resource used for the A-IoT signal can be well controlled by the network.

[0097] In addition or alternatively, as illustrated, the terminal device 120 may transmit assistance information to the network device 130 at 225.

[0098] In some examples, the assistance information may include a recommended value for the parameter. For example, the terminal device 120 may determine the recommended value for the parameter (e.g., a recommended Q value) based on its implementation or based on its measurement / assessment of the plurality of A-IoT devices; and then report the recommended value to the network device 130.

[0099] In some examples, the assistance information may include a latest updated value for the parameter. For example, the terminal device 120 may have updated the first value (i.e. the initial value) which is configured by the network device 130 in an A-IoT procedure; and the terminal device 120 may report the updated value to the network device 130.

[0100] In some examples, the assistance information may include an adjusted offset relative to one of: the first value for the parameter, a latest reported value for the parameter, a latest reported adjusted offset, or a most recently configured value for the parameter. For example, if a previous reported value for the parameter is Q1 and the current value for the parameter is Q2, then the assistance information may include the adjusted offset Q2-Q1.

[0101] In some examples, the assistance information may include coverage information indicating an estimated number of A-IoT devices within coverage of the terminal device 120. For example, the terminal device 120 may determine an estimated / approximate number of A-IoT devices in its coverage (i.e., within its communication range) based on a measurement / assessment for the A-IoT devices. For example, the estimated number of A-IoT devices may be indicated through a higher layer, e.g., a NAS signaling.

[0102] In some examples, the assistance information may include distance information indicating a distance value or a distance level from the terminal device to the A-IoT device. For example, a distance from the terminal device 120 to an intended A-IoT device may be determined. For example, the distance information may include a distance value or a distance level. For instance, multiple distance levels may be predefined, such as short, medium, and far. For instance, a table (or mapping) that maps different distance levels to different distance ranges may be predefined or preconfigured.

[0103] In some examples, the assistance information may include collision information indicating at least one of: a number of A-IoT devices that collided with the first value, an event that there is a collision, a collision level (e.g., high level, medium level, or low level) , a collision rate being larger than a first threshold, or a collision rate being lower than a second threshold. For example, the collision information may indicate that the collision rate is too  high (larger than a first threshold) or too low (lower than a second threshold) . For example, the collision information may indicate information of collision number or collision rate with the configured initial value for the parameter (e.g., the first value for the parameter) .

[0104] It should be understood that some examples for the assistance information are provided above without any limitation, in some other examples, part or all information described above may be included in the assistance information or some additional information may be included in the assistance information, the present disclosure does not limit for this aspect.

[0105] In addition or alternatively, the network device 130 may determine at least one further value for the parameter based on the assistance information at 235.

[0106] In some examples, if the assistance information includes the recommended value or the updated value, the network device 130 may take the recommended value or the updated value as a further value.

[0107] In some examples, if the assistance information includes an adjusted offset, the network device 130 may determine a further value based on the adjusted offset.

[0108] In some examples, if the assistance information includes coverage information indicating an estimated number of A-IoT devices within coverage of the terminal device 120, the network device 130 may determine whether the coverage is large (e.g., with the estimated number exceeding a number threshold) or small (e.g., with the estimated number being smaller than a number threshold) . For example, the network device 130 may determine a larger value for the parameter for larger coverage, or determine a smaller value for the parameter for smaller coverage.

[0109] In some examples, if the assistance information includes distance information, the network device 130 may determine the further value based on the distance information. For example, the network device 130 may determine a larger value for the parameter if the distance level is short, or determine a smaller value for the parameter if the distance level is far.

[0110] In some examples, if the assistance information includes collision information, the network device 130 may determine the further value based on the collision information. For example, the network device 130 may determine a larger value for the parameter if the collision rate is higher, or determine a smaller value for the parameter if the collision rate is lower.

[0111] As discussed with reference to operations 210-260, the determination of the value for the parameter may be controlled by the network device 130. However, the circumstance and configuration of the terminal device 120 may also impact the selection of the parameter value. According to the operations 225 and 235, the assistance information from the terminal device 120 may be used by the network device 130, as such, the determination of the value for the parameter will be more accurate.

[0112] FIG. 3A illustrates an example schematic of an applied scenario 310 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 200 may be applied for topology 2. As shown in FIG. 3A, the gNB (i.e., the network device 130) may provide A-IoT configuration to the intermediate UE (i.e., the terminal device 120) based on an inventory / command request from the CN entity. The intermediate UE may further provide a first value for the parameter to the A-IoT device, for enabling a determination of a transmission occasion for an A-IoT signal.

[0113] FIG. 3B illustrates an example schematic of transmission occasions 320 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As illustrated, a paging message 321 may be transmitted from the terminal device 120 to the A-IoT device 110 and the paging message 321 may include a first value for the parameter, such as Q. In some examples, the first value of the parameter may indicate a number of transmission occasions, e.g., Q transmission occasions 322 (i.e., 0~Q-1 transmission occasions) may be indicated for A-IoT transmissions.

[0114] It should be noted that the first value of the parameter may refer to a number of bits, in this case, 2Q-1 transmission occasions (i.e., 0~2Q-1 transmission occasions) may be indicated for A-IoT transmissions.

[0115] FIG. 3C illustrates an example schematic of resource configuration information 330 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As illustrated, the network device (gNB) may transmit a first A-IoT configuration to UE1 (A-IoT configuration for UE1) , and transmit a second A-IoT configuration to UE2 (A-IoT configuration for UE2) . For example, UE1 may determine a maximum time duration for A-IoT transmission for UE1 based on the first A-IoT configuration. For example, UE2 may determine a maximum time duration for A-IoT transmission for UE2 based on the second A-IoT configuration. For instance, the maximum time duration for A-IoT transmission for UE1 may not equal to the maximum time duration for A-IoT transmission for UE2.

[0116] As mentioned above, the first value for the parameter may be associated with one or more transmission occasions for the at least one A-IoT signal, for example, if the first value is represented as Q, it may indicate Q transmission occasions or 2Q transmission occasions. For examples, the first value may indicate a number of bits or a number of slots associated with the one or more transmission occasions.

[0117] In some embodiments, a value for the parameter may indicate a number of slots. In some examples, a table may be predefined or preconfigured by the network device 130, and the table maps different indexes to different values for the parameter. For example, the network device 130 may transmit at least one index to the terminal device 120 at 210 to indicate at least one candidate value for the parameter. For example, the terminal device 120 may transmit an index to the A-IoT device 110 at 230 to indicate the first value for the parameter.

[0118] In some embodiments, a value for the parameter may indicate a number of slots. In some examples, a linear function of an integer may be predefined for determining a value for the parameter. For example, the liner function may be represented as Q=A+m*S, where A and S are constants. For instance, S may be a difference between two consecutive Q values. For instance, A may be 0. For instance, m may be an integer in a range from 0 to a predefined number C. For example, the network device 130 may transmit at least one value for m to the terminal device 120 at 210 to indicate at least one candidate value for the parameter. For example, the terminal device 120 may transmit a value of m to the A-IoT device 110 at 230 to indicate the first value for the parameter.

[0119] In some embodiments, a value for the parameter may indicate a number of bits in case the value being within a first range, and be used for determining a number of slots in case the value being within a second range. For example, the first range may be C1~C2, and the second range may be C2+1~C. For instance, C1=0 or another value. For example, the network device 130 may transmit at least one value for n to the terminal device 120 at 210 to indicate at least one candidate value for the parameter. For example, the terminal device 120 may transmit a value of n to the A-IoT device 110 at 230 to indicate the first value for the parameter. If the value of n is within the first range, the corresponding value for parameter may indicate a number of bits. If the value of n is within the second range, n may be an index in the table (maps different indexes to different values for the parameter) or a value of m (in the function Q=A+m*S) discussed above, and the corresponding value for parameter may indicate a number of slots.

[0120] In some embodiments, a value for the parameter may indicate a number of bits in case the value being within a first range, and be used for determining a number of slots by a first method in case the value being within a second range, and be used for determining a number of slot by a second method in case the value being within a third range. If the value of n is within the second range, n may be an index in the table (maps different indexes to different values for the parameter) discussed above, and the corresponding value for parameter may indicate a number of slots. If the value of n is within the third range, n may be a value of m (in the function Q=A+m*S) discussed above, and the corresponding value for parameter may indicate a number of slots.

[0121] As such, the indication for the transmission occasions will be more efficient, and accordingly the resource for A-IoT transmissions can be used more effectively.

[0122] According to embodiments with reference to FIGS. 2-3C, a determination of the value for the parameter may be controlled by the network device. Since the network device has more information about the A-IoT devices, the determined value for the parameter will be more precise, and thus the transmission occasion for the A-IoT transmission will be more effective.

[0123] Reference is further made to FIG. 4, which illustrates another signalling chart illustrating communication process 400 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 400 may involve a network device 401, a communication device 402, and an A-IoT device 110. The communication device 402 may be referred to as the Reader in an A-IoT procedure. For example, the communication device 402 may be a terminal device 120, and the network device 401 may be a network device 130 or the CN entity 140, that is, topology 2 as shown in FIG. 1D may be applied. For example, the communication device 402 may be a network device (gNB) 130, and the network device 401 may be a CN entity 140, that is, topology 1 as shown in FIG. 1C may be applied. It would be appreciated that the process 400 may be applied to other communication scenarios, which will not be described in detail.

[0124] In the process 400, the network device 401 transmits, and the communication device  402, receives, an A-IoT configuration at 410. In some implementations, the A-IoT configuration may be A-IoT information that includes a number of A-IoT devices. In some examples, the number of A-IoT devices may be an exact number or an estimated number (an approximated number) of A-IoT devices. For example, the number of A-IoT devices indicated by the A-IoT information may be represented by N5. Optionally, the A-IoT information may further include subgrouping information. In some examples, the subgrouping information may indicate a number of subgroups of the A-IoT devices. For example, the number of subgroups may be represented by N6, which is smaller than N5.

[0125] In some implementations, topology 1 may be applied, the network device 401 may be a CN entity 140 and the communication device 402 may be a gNB 130.

[0126] In some implementations, topology 2 may be applied, the network device 401 may be a CN entity 140 or a gNB 130, and the communication device 402 may be a terminal device 120 (i.e. intermediate UE) . In some examples, the number of A-IoT devices may be provided from the network device 401 to the communication device 402 through higher layer signalling, such as an RRC message or a non-access stratum (NAS) message. In some examples, the subgrouping information may be provided from the network device 401 to the communication device 402 through a lower layer signalling, such as a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) or a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) .

[0127] In the process 400, the communication device 402 determines subgrouping information at 420. In some example embodiments, the A-IoT configuration received at 410 may include the subgrouping information, and the communication device 402 may obtain the subgrouping information accordingly. In some example embodiments, the communication device 402 may determine the subgrouping information itself, e.g., based on its implementation or based on a measurement / assessment for a plurality of A-IoT devices.

[0128] In some examples, the communication device 402 may determine N6 subgroups. For example, the communication device 402 may page or inventory a subgroup in an A-IoT procedure round, and may finish paging / inventory of all A-IoT devices after paging / inventorying all N6 subgroups.

[0129] In the process 400, the communication device 402 determines an initial value for a parameter at 430. In some implementations, the communication device 402 may determine the initial value based on the number of A-IoT devices (e.g., N5) and the subgrouping information (e.g., N6) . In some examples, the initial value may be a function of a ratio of  the number of A-IoT devices to the number of subgroups. For example, if the initial value is represented as Q which may indicate a number of bits, then it may be determined by Q=function (N5 / N6) . For example, if the initial value is represented as Q’ which may indicate a number of slot, then it may be determined by one of: Q’ = log2 (Q) , Q’ =floor [log2 (Q) ] , or Q’ = ceil [log2 (Q) ] .

[0130] In some example embodiments, the initial value may be determined further based on a margin value and / or a collision factor. For example, the margin value may be represented by a, which may be an integer that is larger than or smaller than 0. For instance, the margin value may be one of: 1, 2, 3, -1, -2, -3, etc. For example, the collision factor may be represented by c, which may be a number that is not larger than or smaller than 1. For instance, the collision factor may be one of: 0.5, 0.8, 1, 1.5, 2, etc.

[0131] In some examples, the margin value and / or the collision factor may be associated with a collision rate. For example, the margin value (represented as a) being larger than 0 and / or the collision factor (represented as c) being larger than 1 may be associated with a lower collision rate, e.g., a collision rate lower than a threshold. For example, the margin value (represented as a) being smaller than 0 and / or the collision factor (represented as c) being smaller than 1 may be associated with a higher collision rate, e.g., a collision rate higher than a threshold.

[0132] As some non-limited examples, the number of bits (Q) may be determined based on one of the following:

[0133] Q = ceil (N5 / N6) ;

[0134] Q = floor (N5 / N6) ;

[0135] Q = ceil (N5 / N6) + a;

[0136] Q = floor (N5 / N6) + a;

[0137] Q = ceil (c *N5 / N6) ;

[0138] Q = floor (c *N5 / N6) ;

[0139] Q = ceil (c *N5 / N6) + a; or

[0140] Q = floor (c *N5 / N6) + a.

[0141] In the process 400, the communication device 402 transmits the initial value for the parameter to the A-IoT device 110 at 440. In some examples, the communication device  402 may transmit a paging message that includes the initial value.

[0142] In addition, the A-IoT device 110 generates a random number based on the initial value at 450, and further determine a slot for A-IoT transmission based on the random number at 460. Accordingly, the A-IoT device 110 transmits an A-IoT signal at the determined slot to the communication device 402 at 470.

[0143] FIG. 5A illustrates an example schematic of applied scenario 510 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 400 may be applied for topology 1. As shown in FIG. 5A, the gNB (i.e., the communication device 402) may receive A-IoT information from the CN entity (i.e., the network device 401) . The gNB may provide an initial value for the parameter to the A-IoT device, for enabling a determination of a slot for a transmission of an A-IoT signal.

[0144] FIG. 5B illustrates an example schematic of applied scenario 520 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 400 may be applied for topology 2. As shown in FIG. 5B, the gNB (i.e., the network device 401) may provide A-IoT information to the intermediate UE (i.e., the communication device 402) based on an inventory / command request from the CN entity. The intermediate UE may further provide an initial value for the parameter to the A-IoT device, for enabling a determination of a slot for a transmission of an A-IoT signal.

[0145] According to embodiments with reference to FIGS. 4-5B, an initial value for the parameter may be based on the number of A-IoT devices and the subgrouping information, as such, the collision probability can be well controlled. For example, if a number of A-IoT devices is smaller, then a smaller number of subgroups (i.e., less subgroups) can be used. For example, if a number of A-IoT devices is larger, then a larger number of subgroups (i.e., more subgroups) can be used. Therefore, the collision probability can be well controlled by choosing a proper subgrouping number.

[0146] In should be noted that some example embodiments above may be combined into some other embodiments. In some examples, the gNB may determine at least one candidate value for the parameter according to the operations 410-430, and then transmit the at least one candidate value for the parameter to the intermediate UE at 210. In some examples, the A-IoT device may determine the slot in the process 400 in a similar with as that in the process 200.

[0147] FIG. 6 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the terminal device which may perform the method 600 can be the terminal device 120 in FIG. 1A. For example, the terminal device may be an intermediate UE in topology 2.
