Abstract
Description
Mineral nutritional composition for promoting infant physical growth and use thereof
[0001] Priority and Related Applications
[0002] This application claims priority to Chinese Patent Application No. 202411909069.6, filed December 23, 2024, entitled “Mineral nutritional composition for promoting infant physical growth and use thereof,” which includes all appendices, and is incorporated by reference in its entirety. TECHNICAL FIELD
[0003] The present application relates to a nutritional composition, and belongs to the field of food nutritional composition, in particular to a nutritional composition and use thereof in infant formula. BACKGROUND
[0004] The infant (including newborn) and larger infant period refers to from birth to one year old, during which the infant's weight and height increase most rapidly, especially in the first three months after birth. The first year is the first growth peak after birth, and the growth rate gradually slows down after the second year until the second growth peak appears during puberty. Weight is one of the most important indicators for evaluating infant growth. Weight is greatly affected by environmental factors, such as nutrition, complementary food addition, disease, etc., and is often used as an indicator for growth detection, reflecting the infant's nutritional status, especially the recent nutritional status. Weight increases most rapidly in the first three months, generally increasing by 600-1000 g per month, and by about 600-800 g per month on average from 3 to 6 months. Height mainly reflects long-term nutritional status, which is significantly affected by genetics, race, and environment. Head circumference is an important indicator reflecting skull growth and brain development. In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) also recommends using weight-for-age z score (WAZ), length-for-age z score (LAZ), and weight-for-head circumference z score (HCZ) to evaluate infant growth. Good growth and development during the infant period is the foundation of lifelong health, and adequate nutrition is particularly important for promoting physical development and intellectual development during this period.
[0005] Minerals are essential nutrients for the human body and play a vital role in the growth and development of infants (Ref. 1). It is well known that Zn deficiency can lead to growth retardation. However, a recent systematic review showed that the association between the mineral content of the diet and growth and development in infants was not consistent (Ref. 2). This review included 13 studies investigating the association between Zn content in breast milk and infant weight, of which 5 reported the WAZ index of infants, 2 showed a positive association, and 3 found no association. A study on zinc and infant height showed that the amount of zinc intake might be more important for the height of the second half of the infant's life. Other studies found no association between the amount or concentration of zinc intake and length in the first months of life (Refs. 3-7). The reason for this might be the complex interactions between the components of the mineral intake, leading to differences in the results of the studies. High-quality research using the methods of chronobiology and systems biology is needed to understand how various mineral nutrients affect infant growth independently and together.
[0006] A principal component analysis was applied to explore the mineral composition patterns of Guatemalan lactating women and to examine the association between the mineral patterns and anthropometric outcomes of their infants. The results showed that a pattern of high concentrations of Cu, K, Na, Se, and Zn in breast milk was negatively associated with WAZ and LAZ in the first 18-46 days of life (Ref. 8).
[0007] It has been documented that most minerals, such as Mg and Zn, are bound to citrate, which is easily released as an ion and thus can be involved in the overall metabolism (Refs. 9, 10).
[0008] Ref. 11 discloses that the combination of galacto-oligosaccharides, human milk oligosaccharides, and lactoferrin synergistically enhances the utilization of calcium, effectively promotes physical development, and can be produced industrially and used for infants, especially those with special medical conditions. However, no related patents have been found on the combination of minerals to promote physical development.

Generally, infant formula is used as a breast milk substitute from birth, follow-on formula is used as a breast milk substitute from 6-12 months after birth, and toddler formula is used as a breast milk substitute from 12-36 months after birth.
[0108] In some preferred embodiments of the present application, the food product includes infant formula, e.g. "milk-based infant formula".
[0109] In the present application, the "infant formula" refers to a formula suitable for consumption by normal infants, which can meet the normal nutritional needs of infants aged 0-6 months in terms of energy and nutritional ingredients.
[0110] In the present application, the "milk-based infant formula" refers to a product produced and processed only by physical methods, with milk and milk protein products as the main protein source, and with appropriate amounts of complex vitamins, mineral nutrients and / or other raw materials added.
[0111] In some embodiments, the growth and development is evaluated by the growth of the infant in the population of the same age in terms of age-specific weight z-score, age-specific height z-score and / or age-specific head circumference z-score.
[0112] The present application synergistically enhances the effect of promoting the physical growth of infants and young children by combining the proportioned mineral nutrients with or other ingredients. Further, the food containing such a nutritional composition can promote the physical development and intellectual development of infants and young children. Moreover, the above-mentioned proportioned mineral nutrients combined with other ingredients in the nutritional composition can further improve the effect of promoting physical development and intellectual development.
[0113] It should be noted that the specific amount of each raw material in the infant formula containing the nutritional composition of the present application should be adjusted and determined under the premise of meeting the requirements of the product indicators of the formula food (in the place of use). The product performance indicators of the nutritional composition of the present application in the infant formula food, which are not specifically described or listed, should be executed in accordance with the relevant standards and regulations of the place of use, such as "GB 10765-2021 Infant Formula" and "GB 10767-2021 Infant Formula" and relevant standards and regulations.

[0130] Test Examples
[0131] The present application recruits 200 infants of ≤1 month old who are fed with pure formula milk, all of which are healthy full-term babies with normal physical development. The infants are divided into 6 groups in a random and double-blind manner, and the number of infants in each group and the corresponding feeding formula are shown in Table 2. The body weight and height of the infants are measured at 6 months, and the age-specific body weight z-score (WAZ), age-specific height z-score (LAZ), and age-specific head circumference z-score (HCZ) are calculated using the WHO Anthro 3.2.2 evaluation software. The measurements are made by the guardian using the special "smart baby scale" provided by the present application, which has a maximum range of 50 kg, a minimum range of 20 g, and an accuracy of 5 g. The height measurement range is 40 cm-80 cm, and the measurement accuracy is 0.1 cm. The height and weight scores of the 3 groups of infants at 3 months are measured, and the weight measurement is made in the naked state with 2 decimal places; the height is measured in the supine position from the heel to the top of the head. The anthropometric statistics of the six groups of infants at 6 months are shown in the following table, and the variance analysis shows that p<0.05 indicates a statistically significant difference.
[0132] The age-specific weight, height, and head circumference of the six groups of infants after intervention are shown in Table 2.
[0133] Table 2: WAZ, LAZ, HCZ experimental results Note: " / " indicates no statistical analysis data.
[0134] From the above variance analysis statistics, it can be seen that the age-specific weight z-score (WAZ) and the age-specific head circumference z-score (HCZ) of the infants fed in the six experimental groups have no significant difference. However, the age-specific length z-score (LAZ) of the infants fed in the six experimental groups has a significant difference (p=0.047). Therefore, it can be considered that the specific proportion of minerals in the present application can increase physical development, while having no significant effect on other growth characteristics.
[0135] Further, it is also observed that the LAZ of the infants in Examples 1-3 is significantly higher than that of the control group. The growth of the infants in Examples 1-3 is better than that of the control group. The proportion of the four minerals in Examples 1-3 is in the range of 2-3:20-27:1:0.007-0.013, which can more obviously obtain the technical effect of the present application.
[0136] It should be noted that although the technical solutions of the present application are introduced with specific examples, those skilled in the art can understand that the present application should not be limited thereto.
