[0002] Technical Field of the Invention

[0003] The present invention relates to an ostomy coupling, in particular to an ostomy body fitment, such as a base plate, for attaching an ostomy pouch to an ostomate.

[0004] Background to the Invention

[0005] When using an ostomy appliance, it is paramount that the ostomy appliance is securely attached to the user’s body around the stoma in a manner that it can efficiently receive and collect stomal output. It is particularly important that leaks of liquid and / or gas are prevented / minimised as nay leaking can cause discomfort or injury, such as skin damage around the stoma, and presents a hygienic risk to the user as well as potential embarrassment and inconvenience.

[0006] Typically, an ostomy appliance comprises a pouch in fluid communication with the stoma via a hydrocolloid adhesive component, sometimes referred to as a flange that attaches the ostomy appliance to teh skin of the user around the stoma. Conventionally, the hydrocolloid adhesive flange is attached to the pouch directly via an adhesive or weld, such as a heat weld or ultra-sonic weld; this is known in the art as a “one-piece pouch”.

[0007] US 2004 / 0006320 Al shows an example of a hydrocolloid adhesive flange on an ostomy pouch. The hydrocolloid adhesive flange is comprised of two layers of adhesive with a film layer sandwiched between with a hole extending therethrough for the stoma to pass through. The flange can be shaped by rolling and / or folding to increase the diameter of the hole, due to the materials chosen for the adhesive and film layers the flange will, when released, partially return to their original shape thereby sealing against the stoma.

[0008] In certain circumstances, it is beneficial to control the shape of the hydrocolloid adhesive component to enhance transport of stomal output into the pouch and provide a better seal between the user and the ostomy appliance. To achieve ths, a shaped-disc that is more rigid than the hydrocolloid adhesive component is attached to the hydrocolloid adhesive; for example a convex disc may be provided for users with a recessed stoma (known in the art as a “convex baseplate”). Removal of the adhesive component (and flexible collar where present) from the skin of the user to replace the baseplate may be uncomfortable, for this reason, and to reduce waste, it is therefore desirable to reduce the frequency at which the baseplate is replaced.

[0009] Furthermore, it is desirable that the pouch, and means by which it is attached, be as low profile as possible, thereby providing a more discrete and comfortable appliance.

[0010] It is an object of embodiments of the present invention to at least partially overcome or alleviate the above problems and / or to provide an improved or alternative ostomy appliance.

[0011] Summary of the Invention

[0012] According to a broad aspect of the invention there is provided an adhesive body fitment for attaching an ostomy pouch to a wearer’ s body. The adhesive body fitment may comprise a mouldable adhesive ring. The mouldable adhesive ring may be for adhering to a stoma. The mouldable adhesive ring may comprise at least a first adhesive layer. The mouldable adhesive ring may comprise at least a second adhesive layer. The mouldable adhesive ring may comprise at least one film layer. The film layer may be between the first and second adhesive layers. The first adhesive layer may extend laterally beyond the second adhesive layer. The laterally extending portion of the first adhesive layer may form a collar. The first adhesive layer may be the laterally outermost adhesive for adhering to the wearer’s body. The lateral extent of the first adhesive layer is at least 20% greater than the lateral extent of the second adhesive layer. The first adhesive layer may extend laterally at least 20 mm beyond the second adhesive layer.

The adhesive body fitment 1 comprises a shaped-disc in the form of a rigid convex disc 9. The rigid convex disc 9 is comprised of an annular planar portion 9a and a tapering portion 9b. The annular planar portion 9a of the rigid convex disc 9 defines a reference plane A-A relative to which further directions of the following description will be made. The tapering portion 9b extends radially inward and away from the plane A-A from a radially inner edge 9a’ of the planar portion 9a. The convex disc 9 is thereby provided with a central opening 10.

The first wall 31 comprises an opening 34 which is aligned with the fitment 1 with the fitment being bonded (or adhered) about the opening 34 to seal the opening.

The wearer then continues to press the collar 20 against their skin adjacent to the stoma such that the collar adheres to the skin and distributes the weight of the ostomy appliance over a greater area, increasing comfort. As compared to the adhesive body fitments of the prior art, the adhesive body fitment of the first embodiment is advantageous as it provides a less bulky fitment, improving the comfort and making wearing the ostomy appliance more discrete. The ostomy appliance is also easier to apply as only a single adhesive component needs to be applied with a single release liner. Furthermore, the appliance requires less material and steps to manufacture, this also reduces the volume of material sent to landfill when the ostomy appliance is disposed of.

[0076] With reference to Figure 4, an adhesive body fitment 51 according to the present invention is described, the adhesive body fitment 51 of the present embodiment shares a number of features with the adhesive body fitment of the first embodiment and like features are provided with like reference numerals, advanced by 50. The adhesive body fitment 51 comprises a shaped-disc in the form of a rigid disc 59. The rigid disc 59 has an annular planar profile and comprises a central opening 60. The rigid disc 59 also defines a plane B-B relative to which other directions are described here within.

[0082] In use, the wearer removes the ring release liner 57 and proceeds to shape the mouldable adhesive ring 52 by rolling or folding the ring from the stoma aperture 53 such that the second adhesive layer 55 adheres to itself, and thereafter the first adhesive layer 54 adheres to the second adhesive layer 55. In this way the stoma aperture 53 can be increased in diameter allowing the fitment 51 to be placed over the stoma and the first adhesive layer 54 adheres to the wearer peristomally. This partial return to its original shape is achieved due to the elastic properties of the film layer 56. Claims

CLAIMS1. An adhesive body fitment for attaching an ostomy pouch to a wearer’s body, the adhesive body fitment comprising: a mouldable adhesive ring for adhering to a stoma, the mouldable adhesive ring comprising at least a first adhesive layer, a second adhesive layer and at least one film layer between the first and second adhesive layers; wherein the first adhesive layer extends laterally beyond the second adhesive layer to form a collar and wherein the first adhesive layer is the laterally outermost adhesive for adhering to the wearer’s body.

2. An adhesive body fitment according to claim 1 wherein the first adhesive layer comprises a hydrocolloid adhesive.

3. An adhesive body fitment according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the first adhesive layer is, in use, adhered to the wearer’s body.

4. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the first adhesive layer extends laterally 10 mm beyond the second adhesive layer.

5. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the lateral extent of the first adhesive layer is at least 20% greater than the lateral extent of the second adhesive layer.

6. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the lateral extent of the first adhesive layer is at least 30% greater than the lateral extent of the second adhesive layer.

7. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the at least one film layer extends laterally beyond the second adhesive layer.

8. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein an outer peripheral edge of the at least one film layer is contiguous with an outer peripheral edge of the first adhesive layer.

9. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the film layer is elastically deformable.

10. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the first and second adhesive are comprised of different adhesives.

11. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the first adhesive layer is adjacent to the film layer, and the second adhesive layer is adjacent to the film layer.

12. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the mouldable adhesive ring is configured to be reshaped by rolling and / or folding.

13. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the adhesive body fitment does not comprise a separate collar.

14. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim further comprising a rigid disc.

15. An adhesive body fitment according to claim 14 wherein the rigid disc is a convex disc.

16. An adhesive body fitment according to claim 14 wherein the rigid disc is a flat disc.

17. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim wherein the collar formed by the first adhesive layer is ring shaped with an elliptical outer circumference.

18. An adhesive body fitment according to any preceding claim further comprising a coupling component for coupling the baseplate to a corresponding coupling component of an ostomy pouch.

19. An ostomy pouch and an adhesive body fitment for attaching the ostomy pouch to a wearer’s body, the adhesive body fitment comprising: a mouldable adhesive ring for adhering to a stoma, the mouldable adhesive ring comprising at least a first adhesive layer, a second adhesive layer and at least one film layer between the first and second adhesive layers; wherein the first adhesive layer extends laterally beyond the second adhesive layer to form a collar and wherein the first adhesive layer is the laterally outermost adhesive for adhering to the wearer’s body.

20. An ostomy pouch according to claim 19, wherein the adhesive body fitment is an adhesive body fitment according to any of claims 2 to 18.
