Advantages associated with the complimentary arrangement, as well as a freeform shape of each display unit of the plurality of display units, include at least a wider virtual image and / or improvement of dashboard space, as well as a reduction of a virtual image associated with empty space within the arrangement. Additional advantages associated with the complementary arrangement can include a flush surface associated with the plurality of display units that can be positioned against the windshield and / or adjoining displays; a narrowing of a gap between the windshield and the plurality of display units and an elimination of ghost images at least based on a curved top radius of each display unit of the plurality of display units; and mitigation against rattling and / or premature failures from potential stress points and weak foundations.
[0021] Referring to FIG. 1A, an example display system 100 is shown and generally includes one or more display units 102 (e.g., a plurality of display units 102a- 102d as shown in FIG. 2) and a video display controller 104. In some examples, the display system 100 is implemented within a vehicle (not shown) to project content 106 (e.g., images, text, etc.) perceivable by a user (not shown). It is understood that the projected content 106 being perceivable in one or more embodiments means that the projected content 106 can be understood or reasonably interpreted by the user (e.g., displayed in an orientation that is readable by the user viewing the windshield of theAttorney Docket No.: 0597-000041-WO-POA (P240415WO) vehicle). It is also understood that the user can be a human operator of the vehicle, a passenger of the vehicle, or any other person associated with the operation and / or occupation of the vehicle. It should be understood, however, that the display system 100 can be implemented within any general system wherein content may be projected to the user, such as a theater or classroom setting and is not limited to the examples described herein. In one or more examples, the projected content 106 can appear within an optical path 108 that originates from an eyebox 110 of the user and represents at least a portion of a viewable range of the user. It is understood that the optical path 108 may vary based on the height of the eyebox 110 of the user that can correspond (e.g., directly / indirectly) to a height of the user.
[0022] In one or more examples, one or more images is projected as a first light path 112 against a portion 114 (e.g., a display portion) of a surface 116 from the display unit 102. As an example, and as is depicted in FIG. 1A, the surface 116 is a windshield of the vehicle. However, it is understood that the surface 116 can be any surface that content can be projected upon. As another example, the portion 114 of the surface 116 is a solid color-blocked band near an edge of the surface 116 (e.g., along a bottom of the windshield) that may gradually dissolve into minimally-sized dots (e.g., a frit). As yet another example, the portion 114 of the surface 116 can be a painted enamel that can be any color. As a further example, and because the portion 114 of the surface 116 causes the projected one or more images to be reflected, an inversion of the projected one or more images occurs and causes the projected one or more images to be displayed so that the projected content 106 is perceivable to the user. [0023] In one or more embodiments, and as is shown in FIG. 1 B, a location of the display unit 102 can be changed to correspond to a size of the portion 114 of the surface 116. For example, the portion 114 of the surface 116 shown in FIG. 1 B is shorter in height in comparison to the portion 114 of the surface 116 shown in FIG. 1 B as illustrated by arrow 101a. As a result, the display unit 102 is moved closer to the portion 114 of the surface 116 to accommodate the change in height of the portion 114 of the surface 116 as illustrated by arrow 101 b. As an example, the content may be data (e.g., music files, video files, recorded sound waves, etc.). In one or more examples, the display unit 102a is embodied as a freeform shape, wherein a first side 201 is invertedly disposed from a second side 206 (e.g., having an opposite and equal angle of slant). A third side 208 is curved and extends between the first side 201 and the second side 206. A fourth side 210 is a planar surface that also extends between the first side 201 and the second side 206. It is understood that the fourth side 210 can be embodied in any shape such as a curve that corresponds to the curve of the first side 201 . In other words, each of the first side 201 and the second side 206 are sloped or slanted edge lines relative to the fourth side 210. Additionally, the third side 208 is a curved edge line corresponding to a radius of the surface 116 in one or more embodiments. It is understood that each display unit 102 of the plurality of display units 102a-102d is similarly shaped as has been described with respect to the display unit 102a. In one or more examples, the curvature of the third side 208 causes each display unit 102 of the plurality of display units 102a- 102d to be able be moved closed to the surface 116, thereby saving area on the dashboard 202 (e.g., reducing the area occupied by the display units 102).
[0028] The display unit 102a also includes a display screen 212 that is configured to project the one or more images onto the portion 114 of the surface 116. As an example, the display screen 212 is also embodied as a freeform shape corresponding to the shape of the display unit 102a. It is understood that each display unit 102 of the plurality of display units 102a-102d includes an individual display screen similar to the display screen 212 described with respect to the display unit 102a. For example, the display unit 102c is angled such that the second side 206 of the display unit 102c is parallelly aligned with the first side 201 of the display unit 102d such that a gap 214 therebetween is effectively eliminated to provide a seamless side-by-side arrangement. It is understood that the complementary arrangement can be implemented to position any number of display units 102. As an example, the complementary arrangement of the plurality of display units 102a-102d reduces a gap 214 (e.g., -1-3 mm distance therebetween along an entirety of the opposing sides) that would otherwise exist between each display unit of the plurality of display units 102a-102d such that the resulting images 106 displayed by each of the display units 102a-102d are separated from each other by less than, for example, ~30mm to ~20mm. As another example, the complementary arrangement of the plurality of display units 102a-102d achieves tighter packaging in the vehicle of the plurality of display units 102a-102d. As an additional example, the complementary arrangement of the plurality of display units 102a-102d maximizes a virtual image and optimizes a display height corresponding to the projected content 106.

An apparatus comprising: a plurality of display units arranged about a radius corresponding to a curvature of a surface, wherein each display unit of the plurality of display units includes: a freeform housing comprising at least three sides, wherein a first side is invertedly disposed from a second side and a third side is curved and extends between the first side and the second side, and wherein adjacent first and second sides of different display units are angled in a complementary arrangement; and a display screen, wherein the display screen of each display unit of the plurality of display units is configured to project content onto a portion of the surface, wherein the portion of the surface reflects one or more images associated with the content that is perceivable to a user.
2. The apparatus of Claim 1 , wherein the surface is a windshield of a vehicle and the user is a driver or a passenger of the vehicle.
3. The apparatus of Claim 1 , wherein the freeform housing further comprises a fourth side, and wherein the third side of each display unit of the plurality of display units is disposed proximate the surface and opposite the fourth side that is proximate the user.Attorney Docket No.: 0597-000041-WO-POA (P240415WO)4. The apparatus of Claim 1, wherein the complementary arrangement defines a configuration wherein each corner of the first side of a display unit of the plurality of display units is paral lelly positioned in relation to each corner of the second side of an adjacent display unit of the plurality of display units.
5. The apparatus of Claim 1 , wherein the display screen includes a display region.
6. A system comprising: a plurality of display units configured to: project, onto a portion of a surface, content from a display screen of each display unit of the plurality of display units arranged about a radius corresponding to a curvature of the surface, wherein each display unit of the plurality of display units includes a freeform housing comprising at least three sides, wherein a first side is invertedly disposed from a second side and a third side is curved and extends between the first side and the second side, and wherein adjacent first and second sides of different display units are angled in a complementary arrangement, and cause one or more images associated with the content to be perceivable to a user; and the surface is configured to: reflect, upon the portion of the surface, the one or more images such that the one or more images are perceivable to the user.Attorney Docket No.: 0597-000041-WO-POA (P240415WO)7. The system of Claim 6, wherein the surface is a windshield of a vehicle and the user is a driver or a passenger of the vehicle.
8. The system of Claim 6, wherein the freeform housing further comprises a fourth side, and wherein the third side of each display unit of the plurality of display units is disposed proximate the surface and opposite the fourth side that is proximate the user.
9. The system of Claim 6, wherein the complementary arrangement defines a configuration wherein each corner of the first side of a display unit of the plurality of display units is paral lelly positioned in relation to each corner of the second side of an adjacent display unit of the plurality of display units.
10. The system of Claim 6, wherein the display screen includes a display region.
11. An apparatus comprising: a plurality of display units arranged about a radius corresponding to a curvature of a surface, wherein each display unit of the plurality of display units includes: a freeform housing comprising a first side that is invertedly disposed from a second side, a third side that is curved and extends between the first side and the second side, and a fourth side, wherein adjacent first and second sides of different display units among the plurality of display units are angled in a complementary arrangement, and wherein the third side of each display unit of the plurality of display units is disposed proximate the surface and opposite the fourth side; andAttorney Docket No.: 0597-000041-W0-P0A (P240415WO) a display screen configured to project content onto a portion of the surface.
12. The apparatus of Claim 11 , wherein the surface is a light reflective surface.
13. The apparatus of Claim 11 , wherein the complementary arrangement defines a configuration wherein each corner of the first side of a display unit of the plurality of display units is paral lelly positioned in relation to each corner of the second side of an adjacent display unit of the plurality of display units.
14. The apparatus of Claim 11 , wherein the fourth side is a planar surface that extends between the first side and the second side.
15. The apparatus of Claim 11 , wherein the portion of the surface reflects one or more images associated with the content.
16. The apparatus of Claim 11, wherein a gap between a first display unit of the plurality of display units and a second display unit of the plurality of display units is less than 3 mm.
17. The apparatus of Claim 11 , wherein the first side and the second side are sloped relative to the fourth side.Attorney Docket No.: 0597-000041-W0-P0A (P240415WO)18. The apparatus of Claim 11 , wherein a curvature of the third side corresponds to the curvature of the surface.
19. The apparatus of Claim 11 , wherein a curvature of the fourth side corresponds to the curvature of the surface.
