Abstract
Description
NASOENTERIC TUBE SECUREMENT DEVICEField of the Invention
[0001] The present invention relates to securing systems for nasoenteric feeding tubes, including nasogastric, nasoduodenal, and nasojejunal applications .
[0002] The invention has been developed primarily for use in / with holding a nasoenteric feeding tube in place on a patient and will be described hereinafter with reference to this application. However, it will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to this particular field of use. Background of the Invention
[0003] A nasoenteric feeding tube is of flexible medical tube inserted via the nasal passage through the oesophagus and terminating in the stomach, duodenum or jejunum. This category includes nasogastric (NG), nasoduodenal (ND), and nasojejunal (NJ) tubes. A nasoenteric feeding tube is typically temporarily placed in patients to deliver substances to the stomach or small intestine such as administering nutrients or medication, adding contrast to the stomach for x-rays or to remove substances such as liquids or air from the stomach or small intestine.
[0004] Presently to hold the nasoenteric feeding tube in place, part of the tube near the nose adhered to the face with an adhesive tape or with the assistance of a nasal bridle.
[0005] When adhesive tape is used, it is usually applied to the cheek and / or near the nose of the patient. The tape is strongly adhesive to ensure that the skin sticks to the nasoenteric feeding tube.
[0006] However, there are a number of disadvantages of using tape to adhere the nasoenteric feeding tube to the face. In order to adequately adhere the tape, the adhesive must be sufficiently strong and applying and peeling off the tape can damage skin. The tape can also slide or come undone changing the position of the tube within the person. For example, the tube can slide from the stomach into the small intestine due to peristalsis. The adhesive tape can also cause skin irritation, breakdown and even allergic reactions in some people.
[0007] Another option for securing a nasoenteric feeding tube is a nasal bridle. This is often used to prevent a patient from pulling on and dislodging their nasoenteric feeding tube. A nasal bridle consists of bridle tubing which passes through both nostrils and around the vomer bone. The bridle is attached to the tube. If a user pulls on the tube, they will feel pressure on the nasal bone which will be uncomfortable. This will deter the user from pulling on the bridle. The bridle tubing has a clip located near an end of the tubing for holding thenasoenteric feeding tube. Once the bridle tubing is positioned around the vomer bone and the clip is secured to the nasoenteric feeding tube, both ends of the bridle tubing can be tied together.
[0008] There are a number of disadvantages of using a nasal bridle. Firstly, the process of securing a nasal bridle is uncomfortable for a patient. Secondly, incorrect placement or pulling on the nasal bridle can cause accidental damage to the vomer bone or surrounding sensitive nasal cavity areas.
[0009] The present invention seeks to provide a solution, which will overcome or substantially ameliorate at least some of the deficiencies of the prior art, orto at least provide an alternative.
[0010] It is to be understood that, if any prior art information is referred to herein, such reference does not constitute an admission that the information forms part of the common general knowledge in the art, in Australia or any other country.Summary of the Invention

[0213] A nasal tube holder or nasoenteric tube securement device according to a first aspect of the invention is generally indicated by the numeral 100 or a multiple thereof and isshown in Figures 1 and 2.
[0214] One embodiment of a nasoenteric tube securement device 100 is shown in Figure 2. The nasoenteric tube securement device comprises a securing formation in the form of a body 110. The body 110 includes a base 105 and two arms 111, 113 extending from the base 105. The arms 111, 113 define two opposed ends 112, 114. The ends 111, 113 act as jaws of a clamping arrangement. The arms 111 , 113 are preferably composed of a resiliency flexible material, such as plastic, rubber, or the like. When the arms 111, 130 and are pushed apart, then the resilience of the material will cause the ends 111, 113 to move back into their original position under bias of the resilient material, thereby clamping an item as a part of a user’s nose between the ends. In this way the ends 112, 114 are biased relative to each other and together provide a clamping formation adapted to secure the body, in use, around a part of the nose or ear of a user. An attachment formation 120 is provided on the body, the attachment formation 120 adapted, in use, for securely, and preferably removably, holding a nasoenteric feeding tube 10.
[0215] In figure 1, the body is adapted to be secured around a part of the nose of the user. In Figure 1, the part of the nose being an ala. In other embodiments the part of the nose can be a nasal septum or a columella. In other embodiments, it is envisaged that the body may be secured around a part or parts of the ear of the user. The parts can include a helix, lobule, anti-helix, concha or tragus.
[0216] In Figure 2, the body 110 is substantially u-shaped and comprises a pair of arms 111, 113 that define two opposed ends 111, 113.
