Description

[0001] TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESS FOR OBTAINING ANTI-CAVITY CHEWING GUM BASED ON A BLEND OF OILS AND VEGETABLE EXTRACTS. FIELD OF APPLICATION.

[0002]

[0001] This invention relates to the field of the food processing industry, focusing on the production of an anti-cavity chewing gum. It also covers the development of a blend of vegetable oils and extracts that can be used in other products to promote oral health.

[0003] FUNDAMENTALS OF THE INVENTION

[0004]

[0002] The invention introduces a new approach to the prevention of cavities caused by Streptococcus mutans, through the use of an anti-cavity chewing gum containing natural bioactives. This solution is practical, affordable and offers preventive benefits, especially in regions where access to dental treatment is limited.

[0005]

[0003] The chewing gum uses a blend of oils and plant extracts with bactericidal properties, especially effective against Streptococcus mutans, the main bacteria that causes cavities. In addition, the product uses maltitol as a sweetener, which does not contribute to the formation of cavities, unlike common sugars.

[0006]

[0004] The chewing gum formulation has been improved to ensure that it does not stick to the teeth and that chewiness is maintained. For this purpose, anti-caking agents such as calcium carbonate were used, which prevents moisture absorption and maintains the stability of the product.

[0007]

[0005] Although fluoride in water is a traditional measure to prevent cavities, it is not sufficient for people who do not have access to regular care. Chewing gum offers a complementary and convenient form of prevention that can be easily incorporated into daily life.

[0008]

[0006] In addition to its use as chewing gum, the blend of oils and plant extracts developed can be applied to other food or pharmaceutical products aimed at oral health, expanding the potential of the invention to different industries.

[0009] STATE OF THE ART

[0010]

[0007] The prevention of caries has historically been addressed by three main methods: water fluoridation, xylitol chewing gum, and the use of toothpaste and mouthwash. Water fluoridation, widely adopted in countries like Brazil, helps in the remineralization of tooth enamel and in inhibiting bacterial action, being an important public health measure. However, this strategy is insufficient in remote or impoverished areas, where access to treated water and dental services is limited.

[0011]

[0008] Chewing gum containing xylitol is an alternative used to prevent cavities, since xylitol reduces the amount of cavity-causing bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans. However, such gums do not incorporate other bioactives that could provide broader protection against bacteria. Additionally, the effectiveness of xylitol gum is limited, and a more comprehensive solution for cavity prevention is needed.

[0009] Fluoride toothpastes and antibacterial mouthwashes are widely used in daily oral hygiene. However, these products depend on a regular routine of use to be effective, something that is not always possible for all populations, especially in more vulnerable regions.

[0012]

[0010] Current solutions for preventing cavities, while effective, have limitations. Water fluoridation does not fully reach underserved populations, topical products depend on regular adherence to offer protection, and xylitol chewing gums are limited in their ability to provide complete protection against cavities.

[0013]

[0011] The present invention offers a significant innovation to the state of the art by incorporating bioactives derived from plant oils and extracts with proven antibacterial properties against Streptococcus mutans, one of the main causes of cavities. Furthermore, the chewing gum formulation has been optimized to solve common technical problems, such as adhesion to teeth and moisture absorption, making the product more effective and stable. Another important differentiating factor is that the proposed anti-cavity chewing gum expands access to caries prevention in remote or hard-to-reach areas, providing a practical, effective, and affordable alternative for daily oral care.

[0014] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0015]

[0012] The present invention relates to an anti-cavity chewing gum that aims to provide a practical and affordable solution for the prevention of dental caries, especially in areas where access to dental services is limited.

[0016]

[0013] The chewing gum is formulated with a combination of natural bioactives, including a blend of oils and plant extracts with antibacterial properties, capable of inhibiting the action of Streptococcus mutans, the main bacteria responsible for the formation of cavities.

[0017]

[0014] As a complementary alternative to water fluoridation, chewing gum offers a form of prevention that can be used anywhere, regardless of the availability of dental services.

[0018]

[0015] The chewing gum formulation was carefully developed to overcome technical challenges, such as adherence to teeth and excessive moisture absorption.

[0019]

[0016] The inclusion of anti-caking agents, such as calcium carbonate, and the replacement of highly hygroscopic sweeteners, such as sorbitol, with maltitol, ensure the product's stability and proper chewability.

[0020]

[0017] The blend of oils and plant extracts with anti-caries activity was another innovative aspect, being fundamental to the effectiveness of the gum in combating oral bacteria.

[0021]

[0018] The anti-cavity chewing gum was subjected to a series of physicochemical, microbiological and sensory tests that validated its quality and market acceptability. The results indicate that the product is effective in preventing cavities, is non-irritating to the oral mucosa and is well accepted by consumers, with the mint flavor being the preferred one among those tested.

[0019] The invention, therefore, is not limited only to the development of a chewing gum, but also to the formulation of a product that can be used as a complementary and innovative tool in the prevention of cavities, offering practicality, effectiveness and an accessible alternative for oral health care.

[0022] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0023]

[0020] The present invention relates to an anti-cavity chewing gum that uses natural bioactives and advanced formulation technologies to provide a practical and effective solution in the prevention of dental caries.

[0024]

[0021] The invention comprises chamomile oil (Chamomilla Recutita Flower Oil), lemon balm extract (Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract), rosemary extract (Rosmarinus Officinalis Extract), clove extract (Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Flower Extract), eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil), thyme essential oil (Thymus Vulgaris Flower / Leaf Oil), black jack extract (Bidens Pilosa Extract), mugwort extract (Artemisia Vulgaris Extract), malic acid, citric acid, activated charcoal, glycerin, xylitol, maltitol, with antimicrobial properties. The invention also relates to products for promoting oral health, with antimicrobial properties. These components are known for their effectiveness in inhibiting Streptococcus mutans, the main bacterium associated with the development of cavities.

[0022] The present invention discloses a formulation incorporating activated charcoal, which aids in the removal of impurities and bacteria, providing additional cleaning and contributing to oral health. Activated charcoal has been widely used in dental products due to its ability to absorb toxins and bacterial plaque, as well as helping to whiten teeth.

[0025]

[0023] The present invention reveals that during product development, several prototypes were tested to achieve the ideal combination of ingredients that offers good chewability and does not adhere excessively to the teeth. Initially, undesirable adhesion of the gum to the tasters' teeth was observed, caused by the presence of liquid flavoring. To solve this problem, the liquid flavoring was replaced with powdered flavoring, which allowed the gum to acquire better shape and consistency.

[0026]

[0024] The formulation was also optimized by replacing the highly hygroscopic sweetener sorbitol with maltitol, a slightly hygroscopic sweetener. This change ensured that the chewing gum maintained its proper physical properties throughout its shelf life.

[0027]

[0025] Ingredients: chamomile oil (Chamomilla Recutita Flower Oil), lemon balm extract (Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract), rosemary extract (Rosmarinus Officinalis Extract), clove extract (Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Flower Extract), eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil), thyme essential oil (Thymus Vulgaris Flower / Leaf Oil), black jack extract (Bidens Pilosa Extract), mugwort extract (Artemisia Vulgaris Extract), malic acid, citric acid, activated charcoal, glycerin, xylitol, maltitol, powdered flavoring, anti-caking agent and gum base.

[0028]

[0026] Preparation method: Heat the gum base in an industrial mixer to a temperature between 60°C and 80°C until it reaches a malleable and homogeneous consistency. While the gum base is still warm, add the maltitol and xylitol to the mixture. These sweeteners should be incorporated gradually, with continuous mixing, until they are completely dispersed in the base. Add the glycerin to the mixture. Continue mixing until a uniform distribution is obtained. Add the chamomile oil, lemon balm extract, rosemary extract, mugwort extract, clove extract, eucalyptus oil, thyme essential oil, and black jack extract. These ingredients should be carefully incorporated into the mixture, ensuring the preservation of their bioactive properties, which contribute to the antimicrobial and soothing benefits. Add the malic acid and citric acid to the mixture. These compounds are responsible for providing a slight acidity, contributing to freshness and stimulating salivation. Mix until the acids are completely incorporated. Add the activated charcoal, ensuring it has been previously sifted to avoid the formation of clumps. Mix until the charcoal is well distributed, providing uniformity of color and oral cleansing properties. The powdered flavoring should be incorporated while the mixture is still warm to avoid any loss of flavor volatility. Add the anti-caking agent, preferably calcium carbonate, to the mixture. This ingredient is essential to ensure that the chewing gum does not absorb excess moisture, increasing its stability during storage. Mix until the anti-caking agent is completely dispersed. After all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, the mixture should be cooled to a safe temperature for molding, around 40°C to 50°C. The chewing gum is then molded into specific shapes (strips, tablets, etc.) using appropriate molds or extrusion equipment. The gum can be cut into uniformly sized portions to ensure consistency in the product.
