[0005] Different types of cover for architectural openings are well known. In general, many variations are known for use on windows and so, such examples will be discussed in the following, however it will be understood that such covers are not limited to use on windows only.
[0006] Such a window cover may include, for example, a frame and a covering which can be used to vary the amount of light which passes into a room. Any appropriate type of covering can be used, such as a shutter style covering, or a screen, roller blind, honeycomb / pleated blind and / or Venetian blind, for example. It is important with such window coverings to keep light strike, e.g. due to gaps around the window cover, to a minimum.
[0007] In general, when a window cover is attached / mounted on a window, at least part of the frame is fixed to the wall using screws or some other form of mechanical fastener. The attachment is necessary to keep the cover in place, however, this usually requires drilling into the wall, window frame and / or area surrounding the window. Drilling / screwing into a wall or frame permanently damages the drilled area. Once the frame is attached to the wall, the cover cannot easily be removed, e.g. for cleaning or maintenance of the window cover.
[0008] Alternatively, a window cover can be attached / mounted on the window frame / movable part of the window itself (for instance with bead brackets that slide between the bead of the window and the window glazing itself). However, with bead brackets, during installation the rubber seal can be damaged by inserting the bracket between the glazing and the bead.
[0009] The present invention aims to provide a way of reducing or avoiding one or more of the problems with known covers, such as the window covers discussed above.
[0010] In addition, there is a general need for a mechanism to attach a cover to an architectural opening which is relatively easy to manufacture and which allows for easy installation for a user (and which does not require DIY such as drilling or having to hire a builder to assist with installation). Additionally, there is a need for mechanisms which do not detract from the overall aesthetic of a cover. Summary of the invention
[0011] According to an aspect of the invention, there is provided an assembly comprising: a cover for an architectural opening, the cover comprising a frame that defines an aperture and a covering configured to obscure the aperture, wherein the covering is movable relative to the frame to vary the extent to which the aperture is obscured, wherein the frame comprises a stile on either side of the covering, a top frame member and a bottom frame member; and a mounting device for attaching the cover to the architectural opening, the mounting device comprising: an attachment portion configured to attach to the architectural opening; and a support portion configured to engage with the cover, wherein a length of the mounting device is substantially the same as a distance between the stiles, and the length of the mounting device is less than or substantially the same as a length of a side of the architectural opening onto which the mounting device is to be attached..

[0028] The invention provides an assembly comprising a cover and a mounting device. The cover can be used with any architectural opening. The mounting device can be used to attach the cover to an architectural opening. To assist in describing the invention, the invention will be described with reference to a window in the following description and drawings. It will be understood that the window is one example of such an architectural opening. The assembly may be used in combination with an alternative architectural opening, such as an opening without glazing and / or a door.
[0029] An example of the assembly 1 is shown in figures 1, 2 and 3. The mounting device 100 is suitable for attaching the window cover 50 to a window 200. In particular, a tilt and turn window is shown in these figures, as can be seen by the handle. The tilt and turn window may be operated so as to open by rotating about a single side, for example, the bottom edge or a side opposite the handle. The window cover 50 may be any appropriate cover for an architectural opening and for example, may otherwise be referred to as a shade, sun protector, shutter and / or blind.
[0030] The window cover 50 comprises a frame 60 that defines an aperture 90. The frame 60 comprises a stile 61 on either side of a covering 70, a top frame member 62 and a bottom frame member 63. The frame 60 may form a rectangular or square shape around the aperture 90. When installed on a window 200, the aperture will align with the window, and particularly with an opening 201 defined by the window 200. The opening 201 defined by the window 200 may be filled with glazing 202 of the window, through which light can pass.

The covering 70 is movable relative to the frame 60 to vary the extent to which the aperture 90 is obscured. The position of the covering 70 relative to the frame 60 may thus affect the amount of light which passes through the window cover 50. In the current figures, a shutter type covering with tilting vanes 71 (described in further detail below) is used to vary the extent to which the aperture 90 is obscured. However, alternative coverings may be used to vary how much the aperture 90 is obscured, e.g. by lowering or raising a roller blind or pleated blind etc..
[0032] Preferably, the covering 70 is coupled to the frame 60, i.e. is attached in some way to the frame 60. The covering 70 may be coupled / attached in any way which allows the covering 70 to be movable relative to the frame 60 to vary the extent to which the aperture is obscured.
[0033] In one embodiment, the covering 70 comprises vanes 71, wherein each vane 71 is rotatably coupled to the frame 60. In this case, the window cover 50 may be referred to as a shutter. Generally, each vane 71 will be attached at either end to opposed sides of the frame, e.g. to one of the stiles 61 of the frame such that the vanes 71 are provided horizontally across the window cover. Each vane 71 may include a protrusion at either end which fits into a corresponding part of the frame (e.g. aperture 73 shown in figure 5). The mounting device 100 may otherwise be referred to as a mounting bracket or mounting profile. An example of the mounting device 100 is shown in figures 4A and 4B. The mounting device 100 comprises an attachment portion 110 and a support portion 120. The attachment portion 110 is configured to attach to a window. Thus, the attachment portion is the part of the mounting device which is for connecting to / attaching to the window. The support portion 120 is configured to engage with the window cover 50. In general, the mounting device 100 is a mechanism which can be used to attach the window cover 50 to a window 200.
[0035] As will be described below, the mounting device 100 is shaped so as to provide a robust connection with the window cover 50 (which can be removed) and a secure connection to the window 200. The mounting device can be attached without damaging the wall with screws or nails and without damaging the beading. Generally, the mounting device 100 is intended to sit along at least one side of the window cover 50 to attach to the window cover 50 to keep it in place. The mounting device 100 may be most effective when provided at the base of the window cover 50 on installation, as the mounting device 100 can sustain the weight of the window cover 50. Preferably, the assembly includes a mounting device 100 at the bottom and top of the window cover 50, as shown in figures 1-3 so as to attach to window cover 50 to support the weight of the window cover 50 and to keep the window cover 50 in place. Preferably, when attached to the window 200, the mounting device 50 is fixedly attached and so is retained in position on the window 200. However, the window cover 50 can be easily removed, and re-attached if necessary. This may be particularly beneficial for replacing the window cover 50, for example if a different type of covering is preferred or in case any part of the window cover 50 breaks, or for removing the window cover 50 to more easily clean the window over 50 before being re-attached.
[0036] The specific details of the mounting device 100 will be described in further detail below. Variations of the mounting device 100 will also be described, in addition to ways in which the mounting device may be provided as part of an attachment frame.

The adhesive may extend along at least 70%, or preferably at least 80% or preferably at least 90% of the length of the attachment portion 110. The attachment portion 110 may be provided along the full length of the mounting device 100, and thus, the adhesive may be provided along the full length, substantially the full length or a percentage of the length of the mounting device 100 as described above.
[0038] The adhesive may be provided as a double-sided adhesive strip 111, for example as shown in figure 4B. This is beneficial in that it is relatively easy to obtain and is easy to apply to the attachment portion and to the window to affix the attachment portion. Additionally, known double-sided adhesive strips 111 are available which have high adhesion, which is preferable to ensure that the window covering remains attached to the window 200 when mounted.
[0039] It will be noted that the surface 112 of the attachment portion 110 on which the adhesive strip 111 (or an adhesive) is positioned is slightly recessed relative to other parts of the mounting device 110. This is to allow the mounting device 100 to remain flush with an edge of the window when the adhesive strip 111 is provided. In particular, a ledge 113 may be provided at an outer edge of the attachment portion 110. When in place on the window 200, the ledge 113 (forming an edge of the attachment portion 110) may be in contact with a surface of the window 200. This is beneficial in providing an improved aesthetic as there is no visible gap between the mounting device 100 and the window 200. Additionally, this may reduce light strike which may otherwise occur, e.g. in any region in which adhesive / adhesive strip 111 is not provided.
[0040] The support portion 120 is configured to engage with the window cover 50. In other words, the support portion 120 is configured to connect to the window cover 50. In further detail, the support portion 120 is configured to connect to the frame 60 of the window cover 50. In particular, the support portion 120 connects at least around an outside of the frame 60 of the window cover 50.
[0041] The support portion 120 may be configured to extend away from the window 200 to which the mounting device 100 is to be attached. Thus, the support portion 120 is configured to extend away from (i.e. in a direction away from) a side of the mounting device 100 configured to attach to the window. Preferably, the attachment portion and support portion are substantially perpendicular to each other. In other words, the attachment portion and the support portion may substantially form an L-shape in cross-section. The length I of the mounting device 100 (i.e. the entire length of the mounting device) may be substantially the same as a distance d between the stiles 61. Thus, the mounting device 100 can be positioned between the stiles of the frame 60. This is only labelled for the upper mounting device 100 as shown in figure 3, but could equally apply to any mounting device 100 provided for any side of the frame 60 (i.e. along the top frame member 62, bottom frame member 63, one or other or both of the stiles 61). This is beneficial in restricting or preventing movement of the mounting device 100 relative to the window cover 50. This is particularly relevant when the mounting device 100 is connected to the frame 60 of the window cover 50 in a way which would otherwise allow for relative linear, i.e. side-to-side, movement between the mounting device 100 and the window cover 50, e.g. when they are connected via a lug and corresponding recess along the length of each respective part as in one of the variations described below.
[0042] The length I of the mounting device may be less than or substantially the same as the opening 201 of the window, and particularly as the length of the side of the opening of the window onto which the mounting device 100 is to be attached. Glazing may be provided in the opening 201 of the window. Thus, the length I of the mounting device may be less than or substantially the same as the opening 201 of the window in which the glazing is positioned. For other types of architectural opening, the length I of the mounting device may be less than or substantially the same as the length of a side of the opening onto which the mounting device is to be attached, e.g. less than or the same as a width (or height) of an opening without glazing, or less than or the same as a width (or height) of a door or an opening in a door with glazing.
[0043] The support portion 120 is preferably substantially constant in cross-section along the length I of the mounting device 100, i.e. along the entire length of the mounting device 100. In other words, the cross-section of the support portion 120 remains substantially the same along the whole length of the mounting device 100. For example, the frame 60 (and particularly the top frame member 62, bottom frame member 63 and / or either of the stiles 61) may be manufactured by extrusion, injection moulding, 3-D printing, or material (e.g. wooden) strips may be used that have milled or planed surfaces. Additionally, having a consistent shape along the length of the support portion 120 may allow for easy installation of the frame 60.

Providing the resilient arm 121 is beneficial in that the lug 122 is positioned within the recess 51 in use, but the user may disengage the lug 122 by bending the resilient arm 121 away from the frame 50 so that the window cover 50 can be removed. Preferably, a surface 123 of the lug 122 is at an acute angle to the resilient arm 121. Preferably, an end surface 123 of the lug is at an acute angle to the resilient arm 121. This is beneficial in that it makes it easier for a user to disengage the lug 122 from the recess, as an object (e.g. a coin, screwdriver, flat edged tool etc.) may be inserted by the user between the lug 122 and the recess 51 so as to push the resilient arm 121 away from the frame 60, thus disengaging the support portion 120 from the frame 60.

If the window beading 203 is too narrow, the positioning portion 140 will prevent the mounting device from sitting flush on the window 200 and so would not be attachable. Thus, the user simply needs to hold the mounting device against the window before installation to check that the vanes would still be able to move without hitting the window glazing 202. The positioning portion 140 is optional, as will be noted from the variations described in relation to figures 7A-G. If the positioning portion was not provided, the user could measure the width of the beading 203 beforehand to confirm that a clearance distance (for example provided in an accompanying manual) is provided to allow the vanes to move when installed using the mounting device.

A film protecting the exposed surface of the adhesive tape 111 may be removed and the window cover 50 and mounting device 100 may be moved from the position shown in figures 6A and 6B to attach the mounting device 100 to the lower side of the window 200. After gluing the lower mounting device 100 to the window 200, the widow cover 50 may be removed from the mounting device 100. At this point, as the lower mounting device 100 has been adhered to the window 200, the mounting device 100 will be retained in position on the window and the window cover 50 can be detached. An additional mounting device 100’ could be attached to the top frame member 62 (if not already present), and a fdm protecting the exposed surface of the adhesive tape on the top mounting device 100’ may be removed. The window cover 50 can then be positioned on the lower mounting device 100 again so that the window cover 50 and the lower mounting device 100 are engaged. The top of the window cover 50 (on which the upper mounting device 100’ is positioned) can then be pushed onto the window 200 until the adhesive on the top mounting device 100’ comes into contact with, and is securely attached to, the window 200. At this point, both the upper mounting device 100’ and the lower mounting device 100 are attached to the window 200, and the assembly 1 is positioned on the window 200, for example as shown in figures 1 and 5. To detach / disengage the window cover 50 from either of the top mounting device 100’ and / or bottom mounting device 100, a flat tool / object may be inserted between the support portion 120 and the frame 60 of the window cover 60 for the upper or lower mounting device.

CLAIMS1. An assembly comprising: a cover for an architectural opening, the cover comprising a frame that defines an aperture and a covering configured to obscure the aperture, wherein the covering is movable relative to the frame to vary the extent to which the aperture is obscured, wherein the frame comprises a stile on either side of the covering, a top frame member and a bottom frame member; and a mounting device for attaching the cover to the architectural opening, the mounting device comprising: an attachment portion configured to attach to the architectural opening; and a support portion configured to engage with the cover, wherein the support portion is configured to extend away from the architectural opening to which the mounting device is to be attached, wherein the support portion is substantially constant in cross-section along the length of the mounting device, and the support portion is positioned further from the architectural opening than the attachment portion in use.
2. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the length of the mounting device is substantially the same as a distance between the stiles, and the length of the mounting device is less than or substantially the same as a length of a side of an opening of the architectural opening onto which the mounting device is to be attached.
3. An assembly comprising: a cover for an architectural opening, the cover comprising a frame that defines an aperture and a covering configured to obscure the aperture, wherein the covering is movable relative to the frame to vary the extent to which the aperture is obscured, wherein the frame comprises a stile on either side of the covering, a top frame member and a bottom frame member; and a mounting device for attaching the cover to the architectural opening, the mounting device comprising: an attachment portion configured to attach to the architectural opening; and a support portion configured to engage with the cover, wherein a length of the mounting device is substantially the same as a distance between the stiles, and the length of the mounting device is less than or substantially thesame as a length of a side of the architectural opening onto which the mounting device is to be attached.
4. The assembly of claim 3, wherein the support portion is substantially constant in crosssection along the length of the mounting device, and / or the support portion is positioned further from the architectural opening than the attachment portion in use.
5. The assembly of any one of claims 3 or 4, wherein the support portion is configured to extend away from the architectural opening to which the mounting device is to be attached in use.
6. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein mounting device and frame are configured to be releasably engaged from each other.
7. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein frame is configured to latch on to the mounting device.
8. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the attachment portion is configured to fixedly attach to the architectural opening.
9. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the attachment portion comprises adhesive along a length of the attachment portion.
10. The assembly of claim 9, wherein the attachment portion comprises a double-sided adhesive strip.
11. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the mounting device is substantially constant in cross-section along the length of the mounting device.
12. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the attachment portion and support portion are substantially perpendicular to each other.
13. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the support portion comprises a resilient arm and a lug, and the frame of the cover comprises a corresponding recess configured to receive the lug, preferably wherein a surface of the lug is at an acute angle to the resilient arm.

The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the mounting device comprises a protrusion configured to reinforce the attachment to the frame provided by the support portion, and the frame of the cover comprises a corresponding recess configured to receive the protrusion, preferably wherein the protrusion extends form a part of the mounting device other than the support portion.
15. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the cover is a shutter and the covering comprises vanes, wherein each vane is rotatably coupled to the frame.
16. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the architectural opening comprises glazing, the assembly further comprising a positioning portion which comprises a part extending parallel to the support portion, and being positioned adjacent or in contact with the glazing when the assembly is installed.
17. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the architectural opening comprises glazing and beading around at least one edge of the architectural opening, the assembly further comprising a further attachment portion configured to attach to the beading when the assembly is installed, wherein the further attachment portion comprises adhesive along a length of the further attachment portion, preferably wherein the further attachment portion comprises a double-sided adhesive strip.
18. The assembly of claim 17, further attachment portion comprises a hinged portion configured to allow for adjustment of the angle of the further attachment portion relative to the rest of the mounting device.
19. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the mounting device comprises a body forming at least the support portion and the attachment portion, preferably wherein the body is formed of plastic.
20. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the attachment portion and the support portion are integral with each other.
21. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the attachment portion comprises two parallel elements which are spaced apart from one another.
22. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the architectural opening comprises a handle, and the frame defines a recess for the handle of architectural opening.
23. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, comprising two mounting devices, wherein one of the mounting devices is positioned at a top of the frame and the other mounting device is positioned at the bottom of the frame.
24. The assembly of claim 23, wherein the mounting devices at the top and bottom of the frame are the same or wherein the mounting devices at the top and bottom of the frame are different from each other.

The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, comprising an attachment frame, wherein the attachment frame comprises at least one mounting device at the bottom of the attachment frame, preferably wherein the attachment frame comprises at least one additional mounting device at the top and / or at least one side of the attachment frame.
26. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the architectural opening is a window and the cover is a window cover.
27. The assembly of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the covering is coupled to the frame.
