Description

ADHESIVE COMPOSITION AND LAMINATE WITH SAMEBACKGROUND

[0001] The design and manufacture of footwear involves a variety of factors such as aesthetic appearance, comfort, performance, wear resistance, and durability. The footwear industry (and the athletic shoe industry in particular) utilizes thermoplastic materials to fulfill many of these needs. Interest is increasing in ionomeric resins (or “ionomers” ) in the footwear industry. Ionomers are thermoformable which facilitates processability--ionomer resin is readily molded or shaped into the desired footwear component. Ionomers are resilient which allows a shoe to recover its shape even after having been deformed. Ionomers also exhibit stiffness, toughness, durability, and transparency, shrinkage and expansion resistance-other beneficial features for footwear.

[0002] Despite the accolades ionomer resins receive in footwear performance, ionomers are difficult to bond to the other materials commonly used in footwear. Conventional polyurethane-based adhesives fail to provide adequate bonding strength between ionomer resins and other common footwear thermoplastics such as polyolefins and polyesters. Consequently, the art recognizes the need for an adhesive composition that provides adequate bonding between ionomer resin and polyester resin and / or polyolefin resin. A need further exists for an adhesive composition that adequately bonds a first footwear component made from ionomer resin to a second footwear component that is a textile, such as a textile upper.SUMMARY

[0003] The present disclose provides an adhesive composition. In an embodiment, the adhesive composition includes (A) an isocyanate component that is an isocyanate prepolymer. The isocyanate prepolymer (A) includes (i) an isocyanate monomer, (ii) a polyester polyol, (iii) a polyether polyol, and (iv) a polyhydroxy tertiary amine. The adhesive composition also includes (B) an isocyanate-reactive component. The isocyanate-reactive component (B) includes (i) a diol, (ii) an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, (iii) an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, and (iv) a polyhydroxy tertiary amine. The present disclosure also provides a laminate structure with the adhesive composition.

[0004] The present disclose provides a laminate structure. In an embodiment, the laminate  structure includes a (1) first component comprising an ionomer and (2) a second component. The laminate structure includes (3) an adhesive layer adhering the first component (1) to the second component (2) . The adhesive layer includes (A) an isocyanate component that is an isocyanate prepolymer.

[0159] EXAM PLES

[0160] The materials used in isocyanate component (A) and isocyanate-reactive component (B) are provided in Table 1 below.

[0161] Table 1 -Materials

[0162] 1. Preparation of isocyanate component (A)

[0163] A dried 2L round bottom flask was equipped with a condenser, an overhead mixer, a thermocouple connected to a temperature controller, and a nitrogen bubbler. After purging the flask with nitrogen, the amount shown in Table 2 of isocyanate monomer (MDI) was first charged into the flask after the flask was pre-warmed and maintained at 40 ℃. Then the amounts shown in Table 2 for the polyester polyol (ADCOTE X192-134) , the polyether polyol (PPG 220-110N) , and the solvent were loaded into the flask. The reaction proceeded as slightly exothermic and in the absence of heating, until the temperature stopped rising and was stabilized. Finally the amount shown in Table 2 of polyhydroxy tertiary amine (triisopropanolamine) was charged into flask. Heat was then applied to raise the reaction temperature to 78 ℃. The reaction was stopped after three hours and the product was discharged into a container and characterized by measuring viscosity, NCO%, and solid content, with results reported in Table 2 for isocyanate component (A) .

[0164] 2. Preparation of isocyanate-reactive component (B)

[0165] A 1L round bottom thick flask reactor with a top lid and four necks was dried in an oven and purged with nitrogen, and then connected with an overhead mixer, a condenser, a nitrogen purge line, and a vacuum line. The flask reactor was charged, under ambient conditions, with the amounts shown in Table 2 of diol (DEG) , aromatic dicarboxylic acid (isophthalic acid) , aliphatic dicarboxylic acid (adipic acid) , and polyhydroxy tertiary amine (triisopropanolamine) . The system was well sealed and pulled vacuum to less than 60 mTorr and was refilled with nitrogen. After four cycles of vacuum / N2 purging, the flask reactor was left under continuous N2 flow, and slowly heated. Once the reactor temperature reached 100℃, the overhead mechanical agitator was turned on for slowly stirring the mixture. The reaction temperature was then gradually increased to 150℃ and held at this temperature until no more water was removed, then the temperature was gradually increased at 5℃ increments to 230℃. When about 95%of the theoretical water evolved, the acid value (AV) was monitored. The flask reactor was maintained at 230℃ for six hours until AV was less than 10 mg KOH / g. Then the catalyst, tetraisopropanol titanate, was added after the reaction was cooled down to less than 150℃.  Then, the resin mixture was heated to 230℃. Maintaining the temperature at 230℃, 550-650 mTorr vacuum was applied for two hours, then 450-550 mTorr vacuum was applied for another two hours, and 350-450mTorr vacuum was applied for one hour. The total cycle time was about 12 hours. Then, the resin was cooled to 150℃, and the AVwas measured and was less than 1.0. The resin was then cooled to 60℃, and the amount shown in Table 2 of solvent (ethyl acetate) was charged into flask reactor. With gradual load mixing, the solvent gradually dissolved the resin to form a uniform resin solution. Finally, the resin solution was transferred and packaged in a glass jar. The final product was characterized with OH#, viscosity, and solid content, with results reported in Table 2, isocyante-reactive component (B) .

[0166] The formulation for respective isocyanate component (A) and isocyanate-reactive component (B) is provided in Table 2 below.

[0176] 4. Preparation of the ionomer plaque (ionomer component)

[0177] Materials for the laminate structure are provided in Table 4 below.

[0178] Table 4

[0179] A plaque sample of sodium ionomer resin (SURLYNTM 8528) was prepared from SURLYNTM 8528 pellets by compression molding the pellets between Mylar sheets or Teflon sheets following the procedure below. The plaque surface prepared with Teflon had a slightly printed texture. The prepared plaque samples were then stored at room temperature for four weeks before being used for testing.

[0180] Preparation of the SURLYNTM plaques with texture

[0181] The compression molder was pre-heated to 150℃ and stabilized for five minutes. 170 g of the SURLYNTM 8528 pellets sample were placed within a stainless steel chase mold (25.4X25.4 cm2) on three layers of the mylar film (30.5X30.5 cm2) which was placed on the Teflon  coated fabric (for release and produced texture of the fabric) which was placed on a steel panel. The pellet sample was covered with three layers of the Mylar film (30.5X30.5 cm2) and the top Teflon coated fabric and finally the steel panel. The prepared sample was loaded into the compression molder.

[0182] The compression molder load pressure was set to 1361kg, and the temperature was increased to 170℃within 3 minutes (min) . Then the compression molder load pressure was increased to 4536kg and held at 170℃ for 3min. Then the compression molder load pressure was increased to 9072kg and held at 170℃ for 1min. The sample was cooled to 40℃ with loading pressure 9072kg. Finally, the pressure was released, and the sample was removed from the compression molder. The sample was stored for two weeks prior to the adhesion test.

[0183] 5. Formation of laminate structure

[0184] The SURLYNTM plaque surface was first cleaned with a cotton bar which was pre-wetted by 1016A solvent. The adhesive composition was applied to the precleaned plaque sample of sodium ionomer resin (SURLYNTM 8528) (from section 4 above) , then dried to form an adhesive layer on the ionomer resin plaque. A 2.54cm width strip of PET fabric 1and PET fabric 2 were applied to the adhesive layer and held for 5 min, to form pre-laminate structures. Then the pre-laminate structures were placed in 50℃ oven for 1 hour. Then the pre-laminate structures were cured at room temperature for two days to form laminate structures. The bond strength test and the 180° peel strength were performed and the laminate structures with results reported in in Table 4 below.

[0185] Table 4 -laminate structures and 180° peel strength

[0186] The inventive example, IE1, shows higher bond strength (30.4) compared to the comparative samples CS1 (21.6) , CS2 (15.6) , CS3 (19.4) , and CS4 (12.4) . The higher bond strength exhibited by IE1 is beneficial, and achieves the adhesive application needs for shoes, and for athletic shoes in particular.
