[0004] This invention relates to a cosmetic applicator and more particularly to a cosmetic applicator for applying a tanning composition, as well as methods of using the applicator to apply cosmetic compositions.

[0006] Numerous applicators are known for applying cosmetic compositions, such as tanning compositions. For example, many different types of brushes and sponges are available including different-shaped brushes, double-ended brushes, powder puffs and beauty blenders.
[0007] These types of applicators are typically a standalone product, purchased in addition to the cosmetic composition. As such, cosmetic compositions are generally packaged without an applicator, for example in a bottle (e.g. a pump bottle), a tube or a jar. In use, an effective amount of the cosmetic composition is typically dispensed or deposited from the bottle or tube or jar, for example onto the back of the user’s hand, before being applied (e.g. to the face). The user then typically requires one or more applicators to apply and blend out the cosmetic composition.
[0008] For some cosmetic products, the cosmetic composition is packaged with a built-in applicator. However, a common problem with these products is the build-up of residue on the applicator, which can be difficult to properly clean without spoiling the cosmetic composition and is often permanently connected to the applicator. This is a particularly common problem for products containing tanning compositions because the tanning agent in the composition will generally oxidise when exposed to air, causing discolouration of the applicator if left uncleaned.
[0009] Cosmetic compositions with built-in applicators are also generally more expensive, since they are marketed as a two-in-one product. This can mean that they are not economical in the long term because when the cosmetic composition runs out, the user is forced to replace both the composition and the applicator, since the applicator is built-in to the packaging of the composition. [0013] The Invention
[0014] The present invention provides a cosmetic applicator for applying (and blending) a cosmetic composition, such as a tanning composition.
[0015] Accordingly, in a first aspect, the invention provides an applicator for applying a cosmetic composition wherein the applicator comprises:
[0016] (i) a body having a first end and a second end, the body comprising a hollow cavity defining a reservoir in which the cosmetic composition may be stored, wherein the cavity is open at the first end of the body;
[0017] (ii) an applicator head connected to the first end of the body; and
[0018] (iii) a brush removably connected to the second end of the body;
[0019] wherein the cosmetic composition can be applied from the reservoir via the applicator head.
[0020] The applicator head typically comprises a sponge or a brush for applying the cosmetic composition onto the skin, face or body. For example, the applicator head may comprise a sponge. Alternatively, the applicator head may comprise a brush. Preferably, the applicator head does not comprise a pen or felt tip type applicator, for example having a nib and a wick. The applicator head typically has an open passage (or hole I aperture) through which the cosmetic composition can pass, with the brush or sponge covering one end of the open passage. Suitably, at least a portion of the brush or sponge protrudes out of an open end of the applicator head.

When the sponge is substantially square or rectangular in shape it may be flat or angled. The shape and / or density of the sponge may vary depending on the cosmetic composition used in the applicator. When the applicator head comprises a brush, there is still an aperture in the applicator head which allows the cosmetic composition to be dispensed from the reservoir to the brush (i.e. via the aperture) to allow the cosmetic composition to be applied to the skin / face / body using the brush as a means for applying it. The brushes may be the same shape and / or texture or different shapes and / or textures. For example, the brush at the first end of the body (in the applicator head) may be of suitable shape and / or texture for applying the cosmetic composition to the skin or face or body, while the brush at the second end of the body may be of suitable shape and / or texture for blending out the cosmetic composition once applied.

An applicator for applying a cosmetic composition wherein the applicator comprises:(i) a body having a first end and a second end, the body comprising a hollow cavity defining a reservoir in which the cosmetic composition may be stored, wherein the cavity is open at the first end of the body and has a movable base, which can be moved to increase or decrease the volume (e.g. the height) of the reservoir;(ii) an applicator head connected to the first end of the body; and(iii) a brush removably connected to the second end of the body;wherein the cosmetic composition can be applied from the reservoir via the applicator head.
2. An applicator according to claim 1 wherein the applicator head comprises a sponge.
3. An applicator according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the applicator is provided with a first removable lid on the first end, which covers the applicator head when attached to the applicator.
4. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the applicator is provided with a second removable lid on the second end, which covers the brush when attached to the applicator.
5. An applicator according to claim 3 or claim 4 wherein the first and / or second lid comprises a compartment for storing a further cosmetic composition.
6. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the cavity is closed at the second end of the body.
7. An applicator according to claim 6 comprising a twist dial (between the second end of the hollow cavity and the brush) for moving the cavity base and thereby changing the volume of the reservoir.
8. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the cosmetic composition is a tanning composition.
9. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein the cosmetic composition comprises:P41814W023(i) at least one tanning component capable of reacting with human skin to provide a more tanned appearance; and(ii) a dermatologically acceptable carrier.
10. An applicator according to claim 9 wherein the at least one tanning component is a polyhydroxy-ketone which is capable of undergoing a Maillard reaction with amino acids in skin keratin to produce a melanoidin.
11. An applicator according to claim 10 wherein the polyhydroxy-ketone is selected from dihydroxyacetone and erythrulose or a mixture thereof.
12. An applicator according to claim 10 or claim 11 wherein the polyhydroxyketone is present in an amount of from 3% to 25% (w / w) of the composition.
13. An applicator according to any one of claims 9 to 12 wherein the dermatologically acceptable carrier (ii) is an aqueous carrier.
14. An applicator according to claim 13 wherein the aqueous carrier contains one or more polyols selected from propylene glycol, butylene glycol and mixtures thereof.
15. An applicator according to claim 13 or claim 14 wherein water constitutes from 80% to 97% (w / w) of the dermatologically acceptable carrier.
16. An applicator according to claim 14 or 15 wherein the dermatologically acceptable carrier further comprises propylene glycol in an amount of 2% to 8% (w / w) of the dermatologically acceptable carrier and / or butylene glycol in an amount of 1% to 7% (w / w) of the dermatologically acceptable carrier.
17. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 16 wherein the cosmetic composition contains a preservative selected from phenoxyethanol.
18. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 17 wherein the cosmetic composition contains hydroxyethylcellulose.
19. An applicator according to any one of claims 1 to 18 wherein the cosmetic composition contains one or more further substances (v) selected from:(v-1) parfum;(v-3) tocopheryl acetate;P41814W024(v-5) coumarin;(v-6) citric acid;(v-9) Aloe Barbadensis powder;(v-10) EDTA salts such as tetrasodium EDTA; and(v-16) colourings such as Cl 19140, Cl 14700, CI42090 and Cl 17200 and mixtures thereof.
20. An applicator according to claim 1 wherein the cosmetic composition comprises:(i-a) dihydroxyacetone in an amount of from 5% to 15% (w / w) of the composition;(i-b) erythrulose in an amount of from 1% to 5% (w / w) of the composition; and (ii) a dermatologically acceptable carrier.
21. An applicator according to claim 1 wherein the cosmetic composition comprises:(i-a) dihydroxyacetone in an amount of from 5% to 15% (w / w) of the composition;(i-b) erythrulose in an amount of from 1% to 5% (w / w) of the composition; and (ii) a dermatologically acceptable carrier comprising water, propylene glycol and butylene glycol.
22. An applicator according to claim 1 wherein the cosmetic composition comprises:(i-a) dihydroxyacetone in an amount of from 5% to 15% (w / w) of the composition;(i-b) erythrulose in an amount of from 1% to 5% (w / w) of the composition; (ii-a) water in an amount of 70% to 85% (w / w) of the composition;(ii-b) propylene glycol in an amount of 2% to 6% (w / w) of the composition; and(ii-c) butylene glycol in an amount of 1% to 5% (w / w) of the composition.P41814W02523.
