Description

DEVICES AND METHODS FOR LARGE BANDWIDTH POSITIONING AND SENSING IN A MOBILE NETWORKTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to wireless communications. More specifically, the present invention relates to devices and methods for large bandwidth positioning and sensing in a mobile network, in particular a 3GPP mobile network, using in particular reduced-capability and / or power saving user equipments.BACKGROUND

[0002] 3GPP Release 17 has introduced a Reduced Capabilities, RedCap, user equipment, UE, which trades device capabilities for complexity and cost reduction. Among other capability limitations, the operational bandwidth, BW, of RedCap devices is limited to 20 MHz in the FR1 frequency range and to 100 MHz in the FR2 frequency range. Some use cases for the RedCap category include wearables, industrial wireless sensors and video surveillance connected cameras. Another constraint on the bandwidth of the transmitted wireless signal is when the need for power saving (PowSav) arises for the terminal device. Indeed, bandwidth adaptation is one of the techniques that can be used to reduce the UE power consumption, where a smaller sampling rate (enabled by a smaller BW) results in a smaller power consumption. To facilitate that, the concept of bandwidth part, BWP, has been adopted by 3GPP. A BWP is comprised of a number of contiguous physical resource blocks, PRBs, with a specific numerology. When a large data packet needs to be transmitted, a UE can be indicated to activate a BWP with a wide bandwidth. Otherwise, a UE can be informed to switch to a BWP with a narrow bandwidth to save power.

[0003] However, limiting the transmitted signal bandwidth may have negative consequences. For instance, both range resolution in sensing and position precision in positioning are inversely proportional to the bandwidth of the sensing / positioning reference signal. Therefore, the sensing and positioning performance based on, for instance, a positioning reference signal, PRS, might degrade for RedCap and PowSav devices compared to legacy terminals due to their limited BW.

[0004] Therefore, there is a need for devices and methods to allow wireless terminal devices, in particular RedCap and PowSav wireless terminal devices to receive large-bandwidth positioning and sensing reference signals, to do full-resolution delay / range estimation based on them and to signal their capability to do so without loss in estimation performance compared, for instance, to a legacy UE, while entailing minimal signaling overhead and changes to the frame structure.

[0005] US20230216630A1 discloses employing frequency hopping of a positioning reference signal for RedCap terminals. In this solution, the base station, BS, determines a capability of the UE of a predetermined type related to the bandwidth of the downlink positioning reference signal (DL-PRS) the UE can receive. According to this bandwidth, the BS transmits the DL-PRS over a plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) symbols using a plurality of frequency hops. During each hop, the pilot signal is confined to a small bandwidth so that the signal can be sampled using a corresponding small sampling rate by the RedCap terminal device. However, frequency hopping incurs two main disadvantages, namely larger delays and phase differences. Indeed, cutting the pilot signals into smaller-BW frequency domain segments incurs the need for transmitting the different segments in different OFDM symbols. Performing channel estimation, for instance, for sensing or positioning purposes, based on these segments can only be performed after receiving the OFDM symbol containing the last pilot signal segment, hence the large delay. Furthermore, the RF part of the terminal device has to be retuned to be centered at the pilot segment of the current frequency hop. This retuning results in further delays. Moreover, it leads to different phase errors during the different frequency hops. Additional overhead and complexity are needed to estimate and compensate these errors to avoid degradation in the estimation performance.

[0006] US11454696B2 discloses employing analog de-chirping at the receiver by mixing with a chirp carrier signal, an operation that results in a beat (or intermediate frequency) signal that occupies a smaller bandwidth than the original pilot signal and which can thus be sampled with a lower sampling rate. In a receive mode the device amplifies the input radio frequency (RF) signal and a mixer circuit mixes the amplified RF signal with a carrier reference signal to generate an output intermediate frequency (IF) signal. The carrier reference signals used for communications operations and for radar operations may be different, for instance, a sinusoidal signal for the former and a chirp signal for the latter. However, analog de-chirping at the terminal device side has the disadvantage of requiring special hardware (chirp generator and mixer) .SUMMARY

[0007] It is an objective to provide improved devices and methods for improved devices and methods for large bandwidth positioning and sensing in a mobile network, in particular a 3GPP mobile network, using in particular reduced-capability user equipments, UEs, and / or power saving user equipments e.g., UEs instructed to use a BWP with a bandwidth smaller than the system bandwidth (for instance, in a sleep mode) .

[0008] The foregoing and other objectives are achieved by the subject matter of the independent claims. Further implementation forms are apparent from the dependent claims, the description and the figures.

[0009] According to a first aspect a wireless network device, such as a base station or any apparatus that can perform as or set within a network device, for example, a chip or chipset, is provided for communication with a wireless terminal device in a mobile network, in particular for providing network access to the wireless terminal device. The wireless terminal device may be a reduced capabilities, RedCap, UE device, a legacy UE device in power saving mode or any apparatus that can perform as or set within a network device, for example, a chip or chipset.

[0010] The wireless network device according to the first aspect is configured to receive, from the wireless terminal device having a limited sampling rate capability, first information indicative of a radio frequency signal bandwidth, in particular a reception filter passband, of the wireless terminal device and second information indicative of a digital processing bandwidth, in particular a sampling rate capability of the wireless terminal device. Moreover, the wireless network device according to the first aspect is configured to generate, based on the first information and the second information and using one or more chirp sequences, in particular one or more linear chirp sequences, a pilot signal, in particular a large bandwidth, BW, pilot signal, for sensing and / or positioning and to transmit the pilot signal, in particular large BW pilot signal, for sensing and / or positioning using time and / or frequency resources, wherein the time and / or frequency resources are based on the first information and the second information. Thus, the pilot signal, in particular large BW pilot signal, generated by the wireless network device according to the first aspect allows the wireless terminal device receiving the pilot signal, in particular large BW pilot signal, with a sampling rate that is smaller than the bandwidth of the pilot signal.

[0014] In a further possible implementation form, the wireless network device according to the first aspect is configured to send control information, in particular as part of a radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration message, to the wireless terminal device, wherein the control information is indicative of the time and / or frequency resources used for transmitting the pilot signal, in particular large BW pilot signal, for sensing and / or positioning.

[0015] In a further possible implementation form, the wireless network device according to the first aspect is configured to generate the pilot signal, in particular large BW pilot signal, for sensing and / or positioning using the one or more chirp sequences, in particular linear chirp sequences, by adjusting a chirp rate, a number of simultaneous chirps, and / or one or more frequency offsets of the one or more chirp sequences, in particular linear chirp sequences.

[0020] According to a second aspect a method is provided for operating a wireless network device, e.g. a base station or any apparatus that can perform as or set within a network device, for example, a chip or chipset, for communication with a wireless terminal device in a mobile network, in particular a 3GPP mobile network. The wireless terminal device may be, for instance, a Reduced Capabilities, RedCap, device or a legacy UE device in power saving mode or any apparatus that can perform as or set within a network device, for example, a chip or chipset. The method according to the second aspect comprises the steps of:

[0049] In the following, identical reference signs refer to identical or at least functionally equivalent features.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0050] In the following description, reference is made to the accompanying figures, which form part of the disclosure, and which show, by way of illustration, specific aspects of embodiments of the present disclosure or specific aspects in which embodiments of the present disclosure may be used. It is understood that embodiments of the present disclosure may be used in other aspects and comprise structural or logical changes not depicted in the figures. The following detailed description, therefore, is not to be taken in a limiting sense, and the scope of the present disclosure is defined by the appended claims.

[0051] For instance, it is to be understood that a disclosure in connection with a described method may also hold true for a corresponding device or system configured to perform the method and vice versa. For example, if one or a plurality of specific method steps are described, a corresponding device may include one or a plurality of units, e.g. functional units, to perform the described one or plurality of method steps (e.g. one unit performing the one or plurality of steps, or a plurality of units each performing one or more of the plurality of steps) , even if such one or more units are not explicitly described or illustrated in the figures. On the other hand, for example, if a specific apparatus is described based on one or a plurality of units, e.g. functional units, a corresponding method may include one step to perform the functionality of the one or plurality of units (e.g. one step performing the functionality of the one or plurality of units, or a plurality of steps each performing the functionality of one or more of the plurality of units) , even if such one or plurality of steps are not explicitly described or illustrated in the figures. Further, it is understood that the features of the various exemplary embodiments and / or aspects described herein may be combined with each other, unless specifically noted otherwise.

[0052] Figure 1 shows an exemplary wireless communication network 100, in particular a 3GPP mobile network 100, including a wireless network device 120, e.g. a base station 120, configured to provide network access to a plurality of wireless terminal devices 110, e.g. UEs 110. As illustrated in figure 1 both the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120 and the wireless terminal devices 110, e.g. UEs may comprise a plurality of antennas, for instance, for beamforming. Moreover, in the embodiment shown in figure 1, each wireless terminal device 110, e.g. UE 110 comprises a transmit (Tx) unit 111 for generating and transmitting transmit signals and a receive (Rx) unit 113 for receiving and processing receive signals. Each wireless terminal device 110, e.g. UE 110 may comprise further processing circuitry for implementing at least some of the functionality disclosed herein. The processing circuitry may be implemented in hardware and / or software. The hardware may comprise digital circuitry, or both analog and digital circuitry. Digital circuitry may comprise components such as application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) , field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) , digital signal processors (DSPs) , or one or more general-purpose processors. Moreover, each wireless terminal device 110, e.g. UE 110 may comprise a memory configured to store executable program code which, when executed by the processing circuitry, causes the wireless terminal device 110, e.g. UE 110 to perform the functions and operations described herein.

[0053] Likewise, the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120 may comprise processing circuitry for implementing at least some of the functionality disclosed herein. Moreover, the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120 may comprise a memory configured to store executable program code which, when executed by the processing circuitry, causes the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120 to perform the functions and operations described herein.

[0054] In an embodiment, the wireless terminal device (s) 110 may be a reduced capabilities, RedCap, UE device, or a legacy UE device in power saving mode having a limited sampling rate capability, i.e. being able to sample a received signal only up to a maximum possible sampling rate.

[0055] As will be described in more detail below, the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120, is configured to receive from the wireless terminal device 110, e.g. RedCap UE device 110 or legacy UE device 110 in power saving mode having a limited sampling rate, first information indicative of a radio frequency signal bandwidth, in particular a reception filter passband, of the Rx unit 113 of the wireless terminal device 110 and second information indicative of a digital processing bandwidth, in particular the sampling rate capability of the Rx unit 113 of the wireless terminal device 110. Moreover, the wireless network device 120 is configured to generate, based on the first information and the second information and using one or more chirp sequences, in particular one or more linear chirp sequences, a pilot signal, in particular a large bandwidth, BW, pilot signal, for sensing and / or positioning and to transmit the pilot signal, in particular large BW pilot signal, for sensing and / or positioning using time and / or frequency resources, wherein the time and / or frequency resources are based on the first information and the second information. Thus, the pilot signal, in particular large BW pilot signal, generated by the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120, allows the wireless terminal device 110, e.g. RedCap UE device 110 or legacy UE device 110 in power saving mode having a limited sampling rate, receiving the pilot signal, in particular large BW pilot signal, with a sampling rate that is smaller than the bandwidth of the pilot signal.

[0056] As will be appreciated, the wireless network device 120 according to an embodiment may use large-band pilots, while the wireless terminal device 110 is constrained to use a smaller sampling rate, by 1) constraining the transmitted pilots to be based on chirp signals, in particular linear chirps and 2) by constraining the characteristics of these chirps, such as the chirp rate and number of simultaneously transmitted chirps, where 3) this constraining is done by the wireless network device 120 based on bandwidth and sampling rate capabilities of the wireless terminal device 110 as signaled to the network. In this way, there is no delay loss and hence no loss in position and range resolution for the wireless terminal device 110 with limited sampling rate, as will be illustrated in the following under further reference to figure 2, which illustrates a time-frequency representation of a chirp before and after down-sampling.

[0057] Consider an N-long linear chirp sequence x with chirp rate parameters (c1, c2) and a digital frequency shift m∈ {0, 1, …, N-1} whose entries are:

[0058] Let O be a positive integer. Down-sampling x by a positive integer factor equal to O results in the following samples:

[0059] The down-sampled chirp is thus a -long linear chirp with chirp rate parameters (O2c1, c2) and a digital frequency shift equal to  (digital frequencies after down-sampling cannot exceed the value hence the modulo operation) .

[0060] Next, assume x is transmitted with a bandwidth of BW Hz and define y as the vector of samples obtained by circularly shifting x by one sample i.e., by seconds:

[0061] Now, down sampling y by a factor of O results in:

[0062] where φ (N, c1, m) is a phase shift depending on N, c1, m. The sequence y is thus, up to a phase rotation, equivalent to frequency shifting a -long linear chirp (with chirp rate parameters (O2c1, c2) ) by a digital frequency shift equal to  The signals x [Ok] and y [Ok] are thus distinguishable as long as a condition that can be guaranteed to hold by controlling the values of O and c1. It is thus possible to distinguish at a receiver employing a sampling rate two delay taps separated by seconds even though the delay shift seconds is smaller than the delay resolution after down-sampling (which is seconds) .

[0063] A linear-chirp pilot may be reserved a set of values of the frequency shift m that are left unused by other pilots to serve as guard samples guaranteeing inter-pilot and data-pilot orthogonality in presence of delay and frequency shifts. To avoid destructive aliasing at the receiver side because of the modulo operation in in the signal model of the down-sampled m-th chirp, the pilots and their guard samples should not occupy more than consecutive frequency shift values. Otherwise, a linear-chirp pilot signal with a frequency shift equal to m for some might interfere after down-sampling with a different linear-chirp pilot signal with a frequency shift equal to

[0064] For instance, if the wireless network device 120, e.g. BS 120, is configured to support Np FMCW-like pilots i.e., linear-chirp pilots with per OFDM symbol each corresponding to a different frequency shift of the 0-th FMCW chirp and each with its own lmax guard chirps needed to support a maximum delay of lmax samples, then the following constraint should be respected if aliasing after down-sampling is to be avoided:

[0065] For affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) pilots, i.e., linear-chirp pilots with for some positive integer u samller than N-1 with orthogonal pilot ports that are defined as different frequency shifts of the 0-th AFDM chirp, the constraint becomes:

[0066] For chirped-sequence pilots, i.e., pilots where each pilot port is a specific linear combination of a number M of linear chirps having M consecutive frequency shift values, the constraint is:

[0067] For Zadoff-Chu (Z-C) sequences with root value u i.e., linear-chirp pilots with a length N that is a prime number and with orthogonal pilot ports that are defined as different cyclic time shifts of the root Z-C sequence, the constraint is:

[0068] In the case where Z-C sequences are transmitted on Nc≥2 frequency combs per OFDM symbol, each comb with its cyclic time shifts, the constraint becomes:

[0069] As already mentioned above, in an embodiment, the wireless terminal device 110 may be a RedCap UE device 110 with a limited sampling rate. More specifically, in an embodiment, the wireless terminal device 110 may be a RedCap UE device 110 without support for chirp mixing, with a receiver that has a limited sampling rate that is smaller than the system bandwidth but having an anti-aliasing receive filter that has a passband that can be made larger in value than the sampling rate This will be described in more detail in the following under further reference to figure 3, which illustrates processing blocks 301, 303, 305, 307 and 309. More specifically, in a UE capability report during the RRC connection establishment illustrated in figure 1, the UE 110 may signal: an indication of its limited sampling rate using the legacy parameter channelBWs-DL; an indication of its capability to operate with a receiver filter passband larger than the baseband (BB) digital processing bandwidth i.e., the sampling rate by sending either the new parameter bwp-SameBB or the new parameter bwp-DiffBB equal to 1; and / or an indication of the maximum value of the passband of its anti-aliasing filter using a new parameter filterBWs-DL. The report may also include an indication of the lack of support for chirp mixing in the form of a new parameter bwp-DechirpBB = 0. On the time resources dedicated to chirp-based positioning or sensing pilots as signaled by the wireless network device 120 (for instance, in a broadcast or a resource allocation message) , the UE 110 may adjust its receiver local oscillator to the center frequency of the frequency band on which the chirp-based pilot is transmitted (as signaled by the wireless network device 120) and adjusts the passband of its anti-aliasing filter to a value determined by the bandwidth of that pilot signal, e.g., equal to it. The UE 110 may either set the sampling rate of its analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) to its maximal value e.g., if bwp-SameBB, or, if the wireless network device 120 has signaled a less constraining maximum down-sampling factor (and if bwp-DiffBB = 1) , to a smaller value corresponding to the signaled factor. In its capability report, the UE 110 may also signal to the wireless network device 120 its filter and chirp mixing switching delay capabilities using the new parameter filter-SwitchingDelay. The legacy parameter bwp-SwitchingDelay may take two values, namely Type 1 and Type 2. These values may translate into a delay value depending on the numerology μ using the following legacy table:

[0070] To allow for smaller delay values for the filter-SwitchingDelay, two (or more) additional types may be defined, say Type 3 and Type 4. The following table may be used to translate these types into delay values Tfilter-SwitchingDelay depending on the numerology μ.

[0071] In a further embodiment, the wireless terminal device 110, e.g. UE 110, may have support for chirp mixing. In the UE capability report during the RRC connection establishment, the UE 110 may signal an indication of its support for chirp mixing in the form of bwp-DechirpBB = 1. In its capability report, the UE 110 may also signal to the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120, its chirp mixing switching delay capabilities i.e., the minimal delay its receiver can support for switching between sinusoidal mixing and chirp mixing, using the new parameter mixing-SwitchingDelay. To allow for smaller delay values for mixing-SwitchingDelay, two (or more) additional types may be defined, say Type 3 and Type 4. The following table may be used to translate these types into delay values Tfilter-SwitchingDelay depending on the numerology μ.

[0072] According to a further embodiment, on the time resources dedicated to chirp-based positioning or sensing pilots as signaled by the wireless network device 120 (for instance, in a broadcast or a resource allocation message) , the UE 110 may switch to chirp mixing e.g., if it is made to enter the power saving mode by the network. In that case, the UE 110 may adjust its receiver local oscillator to an analog chirp matching the transmitted chirp pilot (or a frequency or a time shifted version of it) and may adjust the passband of its anti-aliasing filter (post-dechirping) and the sampling rate of its analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) to values determined by the minimal allowable sampling rate as signaled by the wireless network device 120.

[0073] In an embodiment, the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120, may be configured to transmit cell wide chirp-based pilots for positioning or sensing compatible with down-sampling on dedicated time-frequency resources and a pre-determined number of combs, frequency shifts or cyclic shifts per OFDM symbol. This number imposes a constraint on the maximum allowable down-sampling that can be done at the receiver side e.g., the RedCap terminal device 120 or the UE 120 in power saving mode. This constraint may be announced by a broadcast message e.g., the SIB1 message (as indicated by 401 in figure 4 and 501 in figure 5) , in the form of a minimal bandwidth expressed in terms of number of resource blocks (RBs) assuming these RBs have a subcarrier spacing (SCS) equal to the default value SCSμ broadcasted by the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120, in the Master Information Block (MIB) message (in which case it requires a number of bits at most equal to where μ is the MIB numerology and is the maximum number of RBs for system bandwidth BW) :

[0074] In a further embodiment, the constraint may be announced by the broadcast message e.g., the SIB1 message (as indicated by 401 in figure 4 and 501 in figure 5) , in the form of a maximal down-sampling factor Omax which is an integer larger than 1 (no down-sampling) and smaller than  (apredefined upper-bound on Omax) :

[0075] In a further embodiment, the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120, may be configured to transmit user specific chirp-based pilots for positioning or sensing compatible with down-sampling to the RedCap UE 120 or the UE 120 entering the power saving mode. These pilots may be transmitted on user specific time-frequency resources e.g., frames, slots, OFDM symbols, PRBs, frequency combs, and the like, that are determined in part based on the UE capability report e.g., the bwp-SwitchingDelay, filter-SwitchingDelay and mixing-SwitchingDelay parameters for time resources and filterBWs-DL for frequency resources. As indicated in figures 4 and 5, the UE capability report 405, 505 may be transmitted by the UE 110 in response to a UE capability enquiry 403, 503 from the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120. For instance, the number of PRBs spanned by the chirp pilot in one OFDM symbol may be chosen so that the corresponding bandwidth is the largest value that does not exceed the bandwidth value expressed by the parameter filterBWs-DL. Also, the frames, slots and the OFDM symbols within these slots on which the pilots are to be transmitted (see 409 of figure 4 and 509 of figure 5) may be determined by the wireless network device 120 in such a way that the minimal delay expressed by the parameter filter-SwitchingDelay (or by the parameter mixing-SwitchingDelay in case of a UE with chirp mixing capability bwp-DechirpBB = 1) is respected between downlink data transmission e.g., on the PDCCH channel, and the chirp-based pilot transmission. An indication of these resources may be signaled to the target UE 120 either in the RRC reconfiguration message or in a downlink control information (DCI) message (as indicated by 407 in figure 4 and 507 in figure 5) . Depending on the UE capability report 405, 505 e.g., bwp-SameBB, bwp-DiffBB, bwp-DechirpBB, filterBWs-DL, channelBWs-DL, the BS 120 may determine the number of pilot ports e.g., number chirp cyclic or frequency shifts or number of frequency combs, per symbol that can be used and the associated constraint on the maximum allowable down-sampling that can be employed at the UE 110 without inducing aliasing. As already described for a further embodiment above, this constraint may be expressed either as a minimal bandwidth or as a maximal down-sampling factor Omax (with the difference that these parameters are user specific in the current embodiment and not cell wide parameters as in the previous embodiment) which can be signaled to the target UE 110 either in the RRC reconfiguration message 407 or in a DCI message 507 (the same as or different from the one used for signaling the pilot time-frequency resources) . The same bit mapping defined in the above tables for the cell wide case may be used to signal the parameters in the user specific case.

[0076] As will be appreciated, according to the embodiments disclosed herein the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120 in the form of a gNB 120, is configured to transmit on dedicated time-frequency resources e.g., slots, frames, frequency domain combs, and the like, a version of positioning or sensing pilots that is compatible with down-sampling, broadcasting information about these pilots and sending to the wireless terminal devices 110, e.g. UEs 110 control messages assigning ports of these pilots. For cell wide pilots (not UE specific) , the pilots may be transmitted possibly in addition to legacy pilots which occupy time-frequency resources orthogonal to the time-frequency resources dedicated to the new pilots. The number of pilot ports per symbol of these pilots may be limited according to the capabilities of the concerned UEs 110 e.g., its maximum baseband operating bandwidth (sampling rate) , whether it can receive chirp-based pilots using mixing with a chirped local oscillator or not, and the like. If the UE capabilities include a maximal anti-aliasing filter passband, then the bandwidth of the chirp-based pilots may be limited accordingly. If the UE capabilities include a minimal anti-aliasing filter retuning delay, then a gap may be inserted by the BS 120 in the downlink signal destined to the UE 110 preceding and following the pilot instances separating them from other downlink signals e.g. data and other reference signals.

[0077] As further described above, in an embodiment, the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120 may provide broadcast information indicating whether the wireless network device 120 supports transmitting chirp based reference signals that are compatible with down-sampling, at least on a subset of the bandwidth parts (BWP) of the system in the following form: the index of bandwidth part (BWP) with which the chirp-based pilots compatible with down-sampling are transmitted; the kind of reference signals that are supported e.g., PRS, CSI-RS, TRS; and / or the minimal BB bandwidth / sampling rate for each of these signals (below which there will be aliasing due to too much down-sampling) . This parameter may be defined either as a minimal bandwidth representing the minimal sampling rate that can be used at the receiver or as a maximal integer down-sampling factor Omax.

[0078] As further described above, in an embodiment, during connection establishment or downlink control, the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120 may signal to the wireless terminal device 110, e.g. UE 110: the time-frequency resources e.g., the BWP index, periodicity, symbol offset within slot, slot offset within frame, etc. of the large-BW pilots compatible with RedCap and PowSav that are assigned to the UE 110; the port indexes assigned to the UE 110 from among the total available ports of the large-BW pilots; a UE specific maximal down-sampling factor Omax (in case it is different from the cell wide Omax announced in the system information block (SIB) ) that can be applied by the UE 110 to receive UE specific pilots with the value Omax chosen based on the UE capability report and the number of chirp cyclic shifts or frequency shifts the BS 120 needs to support on one symbol for multiple ports of the UE specific pilot and their respective guards.

[0079] As will be appreciated, according to the embodiments disclosed herein the wireless terminal device 110, e.g. UE 110, has one or more of the following capabilities. Firstly, the capability of switching the UE reception frequency bandwidth part (BWP) between different values (when receiving data as opposed to when receiving chirp-based pilots) while maintaining or lowering the baseband (BB) processing bandwidth related to the sampling rate of its ADC. This capability may be expressed by two parameters, namely bwp-SameBB, bwp-DiffBB (indicating respectively whether the UE 110 supports BWP adaptation while maintaining or lowering the baseband (BB) processing bandwidth related to the maximum sampling rate of its ADC) and bwp-DechirpBB (indicating whether the UE 110 supports mixing the received RF signal with a chirped local oscillator) . Secondly, the minimal delay the UE 110 needs to change the passband configuration of its anti-aliasing filter. This parameter may be referred to as filter-SwitchingDelay. Thirdly, the minimal delay the UE 110 needs to change the RF mixing from mixing with a sinusoidal local oscillator to a chirped local oscillator. This parameter may be referred to as mixing-SwitchingDelay. Fourthly, the maximal bandwidth the UE 110 can support for the BWP to be used by the chirp-based pilots depending on the capabilities of its anti-aliasing filter. This parameter may be referred to as filterBWs-DL and it complements the existing parameter channelBWs-DL and used by some UEs 110 to signal their reduced capability in terms of support for downlink transmission bandwidth. As already described above, the wireless terminal device 110 may perform estimations for positioning or sensing purposes based on the large-bandwidth chirp-based pilot signals received on the time-frequency resources signaled by the wireless network device 120 by down-sampling the received pilot signals using one of the baseband bandwidth values Fs=1 / Ts signaled by the network.

[0080] Figure 6 shows a flow diagram illustrating steps of a method 600 of operating the wireless network device 120, e.g. base station 120, for communication with the wireless terminal device 110, e.g. RedCap UE 110 or UE 110 in power saving mode, in the mobile network 100. The method 600 comprises a step 601 of receiving from the wireless terminal device 110 first information indicative of a radio frequency signal bandwidth of the wireless terminal device 110 and second information indicative of a digital processing bandwidth of the wireless terminal device 110. Moreover, the method comprises a step 603 of generating, based on the first information and the second information and using one or more chirp sequences, a pilot signal for sensing and / or positioning, as well as a step 605 of transmitting the pilot signal for sensing and / or positioning using time and / or frequency resources, wherein the time and / or frequency resources are based on the first information and the second information.

[0082] In an embodiment, the step 705 of the method may comprise sampling the pilot signal with a sampling rate smaller than or equal to the BW of the pilot signal and compliant with a maximal down sampling factor.
