Upstream bandwidth allocation map (MAP)-initiated channel change method for data-over-cable systems

An upstream channel change for a cable modem in a data-over-cable system is achieved via an upstream bandwith allocation map message sent from a cable modem termination system to cable modems, instead of requiring an exchange of upstream channel change request and reply messages. The result is that the upstream channel change can be made essentially immediately, in a deterministic fashion. As such, the upstream channel change method is particularly useful for time-sensitive applications, such as Internet telephony, VoIP, and Internet video on demand services. Load balancing can also be achieved more efficiently.

Load Balancing Method and Apparatus, and Software Streaming System Using the Same

Disclosed herein is a load balancing method and apparatus which can efficiently distribute load to a plurality of servers providing a software streaming service where a bandwidth-on-demand is different depending on sending times, and a software streaming system using the same. Sessions established between the servers and clients are classified into first sessions which send data for initial execution and second sessions which send data desired by users after the initial execution is completed, and the resulting session information of each of the servers is collected. A total load amount of each of the servers is calculated under the condition that different load weights are applied to the first and second sessions. A server with a minimum one of the total load amounts is selected from among the servers by comparing the total load amounts of the servers with one another, and the selected server is allocated to a new client requesting the software streaming service.

Programmable agent and method for managing prefetch queues

A programmable agent and method for managing prefetch queues provide dynamically configurable handling of priorities in a prefetching subsystem for providing look-ahead memory loads in a computer system. When it's queues are at capacity an agent handling prefetches from memory either ignores new requests, forces the new requests to retry or cancels a pending request in order to perform the new request. The behavior can be adjusted under program control by programming a register, or the control may be coupled to a load pattern analyzer. In addition, the behavior with respect to new requests can be set to different types depending on a phase of a pending request.

Pre-concentrator and sample interface

This invention describes a multi-stage pre-concentrator device for use with a detector system. One pre-concentrator stage is detachable and may be used to collect sample remotely from the detection system. The detachable pre-concentrator stage mates with the detector system and can transfer its desorbed sample to another pre-concentrator stage which also incorporates the functions of a sample loop serving as an injection volume to the separation column of an analytical instrument. In one embodiment the fixed pre-concentrator stage serves as a sample loop that preferably integrates suitable valves with sorbent materials onto the same structure to minimise dead volume, maximise sensitivity, improving column loading efficiency, reducing duty cycles and minimising detection system response time.

Monitoring thread usage to dynamically control a thread pool

A method, system, and program for monitoring thread usage to dynamically control a thread pool are provided. An application running on the server system invokes a listener thread on a listener socket for receiving client requests at the server system and passing the client requests to one of multiple threads waiting in a thread pool. Additionally, the application sends an ioctl call in blocking mode on the listener thread. A TCP layer within the server system detects the listener thread in blocking mode and monitors a thread count of at least one of a number of incoming requests waiting to be processed and a number of said plurality of threads remaining idle in the thread pool over a sample period. Once the TCP layer detects a thread usage event, the ioctl call is returned indicating the thread usage event with the thread count, such that a number of threads in the thread pool may be dynamically adjusted to handle the thread count.

Method and apparatus for mobile communication utilizing load balancing

A method and apparatus are provided for mobile communication utilizing load balancing. When a home agent (HA) consists of one or more servers with each server being assigned a Mobile IPv6 Home-Agents Anycast Address, a nearby router does not store the link-layer addresses with respect to the Anycast addresses of the servers in its neighbor cache. Consequently, load balancing between or among the servers could not be performed. To solve this problem, in one example, an HA is provided that comprises a representative HA and distributed HAs. The representative HA is assigned an Anycast Address. The representative HA includes a collecting device configured to collect HA lists and load information from the distributed HAs. The representative HA dynamically creates a HA list and sends the HA list to a mobile node (MN). The MN registers its current location with an HA from the HA list included in a Home Agent Address Discovery Reply message. The load on the HA can then be shared by the servers constituting the HA.

Load driving device and portable apparatus utilizing such driving device

A load such as an LED and a constant-current source are connected in series with each other between the node of a dc-dc conversion type power supply circuit providing an output voltage and the ground. The constant-current source provides a constant current Io, the magnitude of which can be adjusted. The power supply circuit controls the output voltage such that the voltage drop across the constant-current source serving as a detection voltage becomes equal to a reference voltage. Thus, the load current can be varied within a predetermined range while avoiding the power loss due to an increase in the load current, thereby always permitting efficient operation of the load.
