Abstract
A sensing system 100 for detecting a nitroaromatic substance, the system comprising a controller 110 with a processor 114 and memory 112 containing instructions for the processor, a capacitive sensor 120 connected to the controller, having at least two terminals 122 configured to sense a capacitance of a dielectric medium between the terminals and sending a signal to the controller, the controller processes the signal to determine the presence or absence of nitroaromatic vapour 104 in the dielectric medium. Also disclosed is a capacitative sensor which senses that the capacitance has changed to a capacitance similar to that of a nitroaromatic vapour. Also disclosed is another sensing system which additionally comprises a transmitter 124 configured to transmit a microwave towards a target, the transmitter central to a plurality of receivers configured to receive a reflected microwave signal from the target, and which act as terminals of a capacitive sensor which senses the capacitance of a dielectric medium betwene the terminals. The shift in a retun loss curve of the received signal is analysed for the presence or absense of a nitroaromatic vapour and / or an enclosure containin the same. Figure 1
