Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to cosmetic, hair, body, and / or skin care products, and more particularly to systems and techniques for applying such products. [Background technology]
[0002] Cosmetic, hair care, body care, and / or skin care products may be provided in a number of different containers and may be applied using a number of different techniques. As an example, concealer products may be applied using a user's fingers, an applicator brush, and / or a sponge product, among other options. When applying such products, it may be difficult for a user to accurately dispense the appropriate amount of product to cover the desired area. If too much product is dispensed from a container, the excess product may be difficult and / or impossible to return to the container and may ultimately need to be discarded, thereby resulting in product waste. Conversely, if too little product is dispensed from a container, the need to repeatedly dispense additional product may adversely affect the user experience. In addition, existing techniques may lack customization capabilities and may be difficult to use when attempting a specific application technique. Furthermore, existing products may be inherently disposable, thereby contributing to environmental waste. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0003] Therefore, there is a need for improved accessories with improved functionality.
[0004] An example within the scope of the present disclosure is directed to an applicator system for containing and dispensing a cosmetic substance. Such a system may include a container defining a cavity and including an open first end and a closed second end, a dispensing mechanism operably coupled to the first end of the container, and an applicator. The dispensing mechanism includes an elongate body defining the dispensing cavity and further includes at least one flexible region engageable by a user. The applicator includes an exterior surface and an internal cavity capable of receiving at least a portion of the dispensing mechanism. Upon engagement with the at least one flexible region of the dispensing mechanism, a predetermined amount of the cosmetic substance is dispensed onto the exterior surface of the applicator.
[0005] In some approaches, the system may include a first orifice restriction disposed at a first end of the elongate body of the dispensing mechanism and a second orifice restriction disposed at a second end of the elongate body of the dispensing mechanism. In some of these embodiments, at least one of the first orifice restriction or the second orifice restriction is comprised of a liquid silicone rubber material. Further, in some examples, the first and second orifice restrictions may each include a one-way valve that selectively allows and / or restricts the flow of the cosmetic product through the dispensing cavity.
[0006] In some of these approaches, when the applicator system is in an initial state, a predetermined amount of cosmetic substance is disposed within the dispensing cavity. Upon engagement of at least one flexible region of the dispensing mechanism, the predetermined amount of cosmetic substance is dispensed through the second orifice restriction into the interior cavity of the applicator. In some forms, once the predetermined amount of cosmetic substance has been dispensed through the second orifice restriction, the second orifice restriction closes, thereby creating a vacuum within the dispensing cavity, which draws the second predetermined amount of cosmetic substance from the container cavity through the first orifice and into the dispensing cavity.
[0007] In some embodiments, the applicator includes a flow-through head that defines the cosmetic substance on an exterior surface thereof. Further, in some examples, the applicator is constructed from an open-cell foam material.
[0008] In some examples, the predetermined amount of cosmetic substance is approximately 10 microliters. Further, in some examples, the dispensing mechanism may be removably coupled to the container. In these and other examples, the applicator may be removably coupled to the dispensing mechanism.
[0009] According to a second aspect, a method for dispensing a cosmetic substance from an applicator is provided. The applicator system includes a container defining a cavity and including an open first end and a closed second end, a dispensing mechanism operably coupled to the first end of the container, and an applicator having an internal cavity adapted to receive at least a portion of the dispensing mechanism. The method includes disposing a predetermined amount of cosmetic substance within the dispensing cavity of the dispensing mechanism. Further, at least one flexible region of the dispensing mechanism is engaged, thereby dispensing the predetermined amount of cosmetic substance through the dispensing cavity into the applicator. The at least one flexible region of the dispensing mechanism is released, thereby creating a vacuum within the dispensing cavity, such that the vacuum draws a subsequent predetermined amount of cosmetic substance into the dispensing cavity. [Brief explanation of the drawings]
[0010] The above needs are met, at least in part, by providing one, two or more, or any combination of, the approaches for an applicator system for applying a cosmetic product described in the detailed description below, particularly when considered in conjunction with the drawings. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0012] Generally speaking, in accordance with these various approaches, applicator systems are provided that enable a user to precisely dispense and apply controlled, predetermined amounts (e.g., microdoses) of makeup, hair care, body care, and / or skin care products, such as, for example, concealer formulas, and that allow the products to be applied and blended in an ergonomic and uniform manner. In some examples, the systems may reduce air bubbles and / or other inconsistencies during dispensing and application, thereby providing a smooth application that reduces and / or eliminates texture marks.
[0013] Referring to the Figure, an applicator system 100 is provided for containing and dispensing a cosmetic substance 102. The applicator system 100 includes a container or cartridge 104, a dispensing mechanism 110, and an applicator 130. The cosmetic substance 102 may be any type of makeup, hair care, body care, and / or skin care product that can be applied to a user. For example, the cosmetic substance 102 may be in the form of a concealer formula. Other examples are possible. In some examples where the cosmetic substance 102 is a cosmetic formula, it may include strong or otherwise harsh chemicals and / or solvents, such as, for example, volatile materials.
[0014] The container 104 has a first end 104a, a second end 104b, and defines a cavity 105 sized to hold the cosmetic substance 102. The container may be constructed from any number of suitable materials, such as, for example, a polymeric, metallic, and / or glass material. Other examples are possible. In some examples, the first end 104a of the container 104 may be open, and the second end 104b of the container 104 may be closed. As illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 6, in some examples, the first end 104a of the container 104 may include a threaded connection region 106. In some examples, the container may be at least partially constructed from a transparent and / or translucent material and may receive approximately 3 ml to approximately 15 ml of the cosmetic substance 102. More specifically, in some examples, the cavity 105 may be sized to receive approximately 6 ml of the cosmetic substance 102. In some forms (not illustrated), the container 104 may be configured to receive an inner pouch that may be removable therefrom.
[0015] The dispensing mechanism 110 is operably coupled to the first end 104a of the container 104 and has a first end 110a and a second end 110b that define an elongated body 111. An interior portion of the elongated body 111 defines a dispensing cavity 112. The elongated body 111 also includes at least one flexible region 114 that may be engageable (e.g., depressible and / or squeezable) by a user to reduce the volume of the dispensing cavity 112. In some examples, the at least one flexible region 114 is comprised of a bi-injected soft-touch material, such as fluorosilicate. In some examples, the elongated body 111 may include one or more openings in which the at least one flexible region 114 is disposed. The at least one flexible region 114 may aid in increased grippability and actuation.
[0016] In the illustrated examples, the first end 110a of the dispensing mechanism 110 may be operably coupled to the first end 104a of the container 104. More specifically, in these examples, the first end 110a of the dispensing mechanism 110 includes a threaded coupling region 116 that may threadably engage with a corresponding threaded coupling region 106 of the first end 104a of the container 104 to allow the dispensing mechanism 110 to be removably coupled to the container 104. It will be understood that the container 104 and the dispensing mechanism 110 may be operably coupled to one another via any number of suitable techniques, such as, for example, a friction fit coupling, a tab and protrusion coupling, etc. Other examples are possible. Furthermore, it will be understood that in some examples, the elongate body 111 may be constructed entirely or predominantly of a flexible material.
[0017] 5 and 6 , in some examples, the dispensing mechanism 110 includes a first orifice restriction 120 and a second orifice restriction 124. More specifically, in these examples, the first and second orifice restrictions 120, 124 are each in the form of a one-way valve that can be selectively opened or closed. The first one-way valve 120 is disposed at a first end 110a of the elongated body 111 of the dispensing mechanism 110. The second one-way valve 124 is disposed at a second end 110b of the elongated body 111 of the dispensing mechanism 110. As a result, the dispensing cavity 112 is defined by the elongated body 111 and the first and second one-way valves 120, 124. Like the flexible region 114, in some examples, the first and second one-way valves 120, 124 may be constructed from a bi-injected soft-touch material, such as fluorosilicate. As a result, if the desired cosmetic substance 102 is comprised of a strong and potentially abrasive chemical formulation, the dispensing mechanism 110 can safely retain the substance 102 without degrading or otherwise weakening the device.
[0018] The applicator 130 has a first end 130a, an internal cavity 132, and an exterior surface 134. The first end 130a of the applicator 130 may include a threaded coupling region 136 in the form of a rigid collar that allows the applicator 130 to threadably couple to the second end 110b of the dispensing mechanism 110. In the illustrated example, the second end 110b of the dispensing mechanism 110 includes a second threaded coupling region 118 that engages with the threaded coupling region 136 of the applicator 130. It will be understood that in some examples, other suitable types of coupling mechanisms, such as, for example, friction fit couplings, tab and protrusion couplings, and the like, may be used to removably couple the applicator 130 to the dispensing mechanism 110. Other examples are possible. When so configured, the internal cavity 132 of the applicator 130 is disposed adjacent to the dispensing cavity 112 of the dispensing mechanism 110, and the second one-way valve 124 is disposed therebetween.
[0019] In some examples, the applicator 130 is constructed from a flocked soft foam having channels 138 that allow the cosmetic substance 102 to flow from the interior cavity 132 to the exterior surface 134 of the applicator 130. By using a flocked foam, the exterior surface 134 allows for smooth application of the cosmetic substance 102. In some examples, the channels 138 can be laser cut. In other words, the applicator 130 can be micro-perforated to allow the cosmetic substance 102 to diffuse through the exterior surface 134 of the applicator 130 and spread evenly thereon. In some examples, the applicator can have a dome-shaped, sloped surface with a petal shape that mimics a user's finger, approximately 5 mm thick and approximately 17 mm wide. In these and other examples, the tip of the applicator 130 can be sharpened to allow for targeted application of the cosmetic substance 102. Other examples are also possible. For example, in some approaches, the applicator 130 can have a tube disposed therein. The tube may be constructed from any number of suitable materials, e.g., a flexible member, that can move and / or bend when pressure is applied to the applicator 130, while still providing increased support during application of the cosmetic substance 102. In some examples, the tube itself may define a channel that directs the cosmetic substance 102 from the dispensing cavity 112 to the upper end of the applicator 130. Other examples are possible.
[0020] The applicator system 100 may further include a cap 150 having a first end 150a and a body 152. As illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 6, the first end 150a of the cap 150 is adapted to removably couple with a portion of the dispensing mechanism 110. More specifically, in the illustrated example, the dispensing mechanism 110 includes a ledge 119 disposed near its second end 110b, the ledge 119 being dimensioned to frictionally couple with the first end 150a of the cap 150. It will be appreciated that in other examples, the cap 150 may be threadably coupled with the dispensing mechanism 110. Other suitable coupling mechanisms may be used. The body 152 of the cap 150 may be flared to accommodate a larger applicator 130. Furthermore, like the second end 104b of the container 104, the cap 150 may be flat at an end or top surface to allow the applicator system 100 to stand upside down on a horizontal surface.
[0021] During operation, the applicator system 100 is primed by filling the cavity 105 with the cosmetic substance 102. The first end 110a of the dispensing mechanism 110 is coupled to the first end 104a of the container 104, and the first one-way valve 120 holds the cosmetic substance 102 within the cavity 105. The applicator 130 is then operably coupled to the second end 110b of the dispensing mechanism, such that the second one-way valve 124 is positioned between the dispensing cavity 112 and the internal cavity 132. The applicator system is then primed, or placed in an initial state, by engaging or squeezing one or more flexible regions 114, such that air disposed within the dispensing cavity 112 opens the second one-way valve 124 and is expelled therefrom. Releasing one or more flexible regions 114 closes the second one-way valve 124, thereby creating a vacuum within the dispensing cavity 112, which in turn opens the first one-way valve 120 and draws a predetermined amount (e.g., approximately 5 microliters to approximately 20 microliters, preferably approximately 10 microliters) into the dispensing cavity 112. It will be appreciated that the dimensions of the dispensing cavity 112 and / or the elasticity or restoring force of the first and second one-way valves 120, 124 can be varied as desired to draw a specified amount of cosmetic substance 102 into the dispensing cavity 112. It will further be appreciated that in some examples, the dispensing cavity 112 can be initially filled with the cosmetic substance 102 during a manufacturing step.
[0022] Once the applicator system 100 has been primed in an initial state with a quantity of cosmetic substance 102 disposed within the dispensing cavity 112, the user may re-engage one or more flexible regions 114. This engagement by the user causes the cosmetic substance 102 to be expelled from the dispensing cavity 112 via the second one-way valve 124 and then into the interior cavity 132 of the applicator 130. Releasing the one or more flexible regions 114 closes the second one-way valve 124 and again creates a vacuum within the dispensing cavity 112, thereby opening the first one-way valve 120 and drawing an additional quantity of cosmetic substance 102 into the dispensing cavity 112.
[0023] The user may then apply the cosmetic substance 102 by pressing the exterior surface 134 of the applicator 130 against the user's skin, causing the cosmetic substance 102 disposed within the interior cavity 132 of the applicator 130 to flow through the applicator 130 and onto its exterior surface 134. Once the cosmetic substance 102 has been applied, the user may secure the cap 150 to the dispensing mechanism.
[0024] Because applicator system 100 includes threadable or otherwise removable components, applicator 130 can be separated from the rest of applicator system 100 as desired and replaced with a different applicator having a desired geometry and / or other properties, such as, for example, a softer or more rigid foam material. Thus, system 100 can be customizable to meet changing consumer demands. Such a removable configuration further allows applicator 130 to be properly cleaned and replaced as needed, which can be advantageous in retail environments to promote hygienic practices.
[0025] Additionally, the applicator system 100 may be reusable. More specifically, in some instances, once all of the cosmetic substance 102 has been used, the user may remove the container 104 from the dispensing mechanism 110 and return the container 104 to the manufacturer. The user may then purchase a stand-alone container 104, which may have a closure or cap arrangement (not illustrated) on its first end 104a, and then couple the dispensing mechanism 110 to the closure or cap arrangement. Such a system may result in a significant reduction in packaging waste.
[0026] When so configured, the system allows the consumer to actuate, apply, and blend the product with a single swipe or motion. The applicator head's geometry allows the product to spread over the surface for a more even application, while the pointed top region of the applicator head provides better application. By providing two orifice restrictions, displacement within the dispensing mechanism is precisely controlled, which is not possible with existing systems and pumping mechanisms. Furthermore, because each of the components is removably coupled to one another, system 100 can be easily customized by the user as desired.
[0027] Those skilled in the art will recognize that various modifications, changes and combinations can be made to the above-described embodiments without departing from the scope of the present invention, and such modifications, changes and combinations should be considered to be within the scope of the inventive concept.
[0028] The final claims of this patent application are not intended to be construed under 35 U.S.C. § 112(f) unless traditional means-plus-function language is expressly recited, such as when the claim expressly contains the language "means for" or "step for."
