Noise abatement underwater

Abstract

An underwater noise abatement system comprises an upright array of sound-absorbing panels on a supporting structure, alternating with vertical spaces between successive panels of the array. Each panel comprises a sound-absorbing matrix that contains an array of embedded voids. Each panel further comprises an acoustically reflective section that faces a reverse face of the matrix, opposed to an exposed face of the matrix. The panels are inclined relative to the horizontal so that the exposed face of the matrix faces upwardly and toward a source of underwater noise, such as an impact-driven monopile.
