Microphone Interference Detection Method and Apparatus

A method and apparatus for detecting microphone interference includes first and second built-in microphones producing first and second microphone signals. A first filter bank creates first high-frequency-band and first low-frequency-band signals from the first microphone signal. A first measurement calculator determines a high-frequency-band energy value from the first high-frequency-band signal and the second high-frequency-band signal when the first and second high-frequency-band signals' magnitudes exceeds predetermined thresholds. A second measurement calculator calculates a low-frequency-band energy value from the first low-frequency-band signal and the second low-frequency-band signal when the first and second low-frequency-band signals' magnitudes exceed predetermined thresholds. A logic control block, coupled to the first measurement calculator and the second measurement calculator, detects microphone interference and produces an output signal indicating microphone occlusion or wind noise.

Enhancing audio using a mobile device

Embodiments disclosed herein enable detection and improvement of the quality of the audio signal using a mobile device by determining the loss in the audio signal and enhancing audio by streaming the remainder portion of audio. Embodiments disclosed herein enable an improvement in the sound quality rendered by rendering devices by emitting an test audio signal from the source device, measuring the test audio signal using microphones, detecting variation in the frequency response, loudness and timing characteristics using impulse responses and correcting for them. Embodiments disclosed herein also compensate for the noise in the acoustic space by determining the reverberation and ambient noise levels and their frequency characteristics and changing the digital filters and volumes of the source signal to compensate for the varying noise levels.

An audio system includes an earplug with a speaker to deliver sound to the ear, and / or a microphone which captures sound in the ear canal, and an earmuff is worn over the earplug. The earplug receives sound signals from the earmuff (and / or transmits captured sound signals to the earmuff) by translating such sound signals into light signals which are transmitted over a free space situated between the earmuff and earplug. The light signals are then received at the earplug and / or earmuff and converted to electrical signals which may be further transmitted (e.g., from the earmuff to some external communications device) or converted to sound (e.g., in the earplug by having the electrical signals drive an earplug speaker). If power is required by the earplug, the need for on-board power sources may be avoided by converting light transmitted from the earmuff into power at the earplug. Electrical shock and physical snag hazards are avoided, and the earmuff is easily put on and removed, owing to the lack of wires or other physical connections between the earplug and earmuff. Additionally, by avoiding wires or radio transmission between the earplug and earmuff, electromagnetic interference may be reduced.

Adaptively filtering a microphone signal responsive to vibration sensed in a user's face while speaking

Electronic devices and methods are disclosed that adaptively filter a microphone signal responsive to vibration that is sensed in the face of a user speaking into a microphone of the device. An electronic device can include a microphone, a vibration sensor, a vibration characterization unit, and an adaptive sound filter. The microphone generates a microphone signal that can include a user speech component and a background noise component. The vibration sensor senses vibration of the face while a user speaks into the microphone, and generates a vibration signal containing frequency components that are indicative of the sensed vibration. The vibration characterization unit generates speech characterization data that characterize at least one of the frequency components of the vibration signal that is associated with the speech component of the microphone signal. The adaptive sound filter filters the microphone signal using filter coefficients that are tuned in response to the speech characterization data to generate a filtered speech signal with an attenuated background noise component relative to the user speech component from the microphone signal.

Microphone and communication interface system

InactiveUS20050244020A1Avoid damaging the environmentHigh expiratoryMouthpiece/microphone attachmentsSpeech recognitionCultural practiceHuman body
The present invention eliminates the disadvantages of an analysis target used by a cellular phone and speech recognition, that is, a normal sound which is transmitted through the air and which is externally sampled through a microphone, and improves the disadvantages that noise may be mixed or occur in the target, that information may leak, and that corrections are difficult. The present invention also provides a personal portable information terminal realizing new portable terminal communications which do not require training and which conform to the cultural practice of human beings. In the present invention, no apparatus that obtains an analysis target is put off human body, and a normal sound is not an analysis target. A stethoscope-type microphone is installed on the surface of the human skin. Then, a vibration sound is sampled which is obtained when a non-audible murmur articulated in association with speech action (the motion of the mouth) not using the regular vibration of the vocal cords is transmitted through the flesh. A vibration sound obtained when a non-audible murmur amplified is transmitted through the flesh is similar to a whisper. The vibration sound can thus be heard and understood by human beings. Accordingly, the vibration sound can be used for a speech over the cellular phone as it is. Further, when the vibration sound obtained when the non-audible murmur is transmitted through the flesh is analyzed and converted into parameters, a kind of soundless recognition is realized. The present invention replaces the HMM model, conventionally used for speech recognition by an acoustic model created on the basis of a vibration sound obtained when a non-audible murmur is transmitted through the flesh. Therefore, the present invention provides a new method of inputting data to the personal portable information terminal.
