Description

Composition for external use and method for enhancing fragrance thereof

[0001] The present invention relates to a composition for external use and a method for enhancing the fragrance thereof.

[0002] In recent years, people, both men and women, have become increasingly interested in odor etiquette. Research into various body odors has been intensively conducted, and the main causes of odors, such as sweat odor, underarm odor, foot odor, and body odor associated with aging, have been identified. Countermeasures against such body odors have been proposed, including masking with perfumes or cosmetics containing aromatic components, utilizing the odor-absorbing properties of charcoal (Patent Document 1), using extracts from the roots and rhizomes of Sanguinea chinensis (Patent Document 2), and using condensed persimmon tannins (Patent Document 3). Furthermore, a technique for rejuvenating body odor using lactone, a component characteristic of the body odor of young women, is also known (Patent Document 4).

[0003] In fragrance products such as perfumes and cosmetics, the long-lasting fragrance during use is an important factor in providing consumer satisfaction, a sense of refreshment, and a sense of elation, as well as increasing product value. To this end, the use of sustained-release fragrances, which incorporate techniques such as retaining the fragrance in a carrier, is becoming more common. However, increasing the amount of such sustained-release fragrances increases product costs and poses risks to formulation stability, such as coloring. Therefore, there is a strong demand for technology that enhances the fragrance release after application of sustained-release fragrances and efficiently releases fragrances.

[0004] JP 2002-145747 A JP 2011-183019 A JP 2001-302483 A WO 2019 / 059023

[0005] The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and aims to provide a topical composition such as a cosmetic that, after application to the skin, provides an excellent fragrance from a sustained-release fragrance and further enhances the release of the fragrance. It is also an object of the present invention to provide a method for providing a topical composition that, after application to the skin, can release a sufficient fragrance and further enhance the release of the fragrance.

[0006] It is known that certain hydroxy fatty acids, such as 4-hydroxyundecanoic acid, and their salts undergo cyclization under heat or acidic conditions due to lipases on the skin. While these specific hydroxy fatty acids themselves are odorless, they emit fragrance upon cyclization to form γ-undecalactone or the like. Because these specific hydroxy fatty acids are thought to emit fragrance over a long period of time by gradually undergoing the above-mentioned reaction on the skin, they are expected to be components that can improve the persistence of fragrance after application to the skin. While developing topical compositions containing these specific hydroxy fatty acids, the inventors encountered the problem that, depending on the composition and skin condition, the fragrance components produced by the cyclization of the hydroxy fatty acids were weak, resulting in insufficient fragrance release for a fragranced product. To solve this problem, the inventors conducted extensive research and discovered that blending a mono- to hexavalent alkyl alcohol, an amphiphilic ester, a phenol derivative, or a cationic polymer with a topical composition containing the specific hydroxy fatty acid or its salt solves the above problem and enhances fragrance release after application to the skin, thereby completing the present invention. Specifically, the gist of the present invention is as follows.

[0007] [1] A topical composition comprising (A) a hydroxy fatty acid or a salt thereof having 10 or more carbon atoms and having a hydroxy group at the 4th or 5th position, and (B) one or more components selected from the group consisting of (b-1) a mono- to hexahydric alkyl alcohol, (b-2) an amphiphilic ester, (b-3) a phenol derivative, and (b-4) a cationic polymer. [2] The topical composition according to [1], wherein component (A) comprises 4-hydroxyundecanoic acid or a salt thereof. [3] The topical composition according to [1] or [2], wherein, in component (B), component (b-1) comprises: (b-1-1) a monohydric alcohol having 2 carbon atoms, (b-1-2) a mono- or dihydric alcohol having 3 carbon atoms, (b-1-3) a trihydric alcohol having 3 carbon atoms, or (b-1-4) a mono- to hexahydric alcohol having 4 to 6 carbon atoms. [4] The topical composition according to [1] or [2], wherein component (B) comprises one or more components selected from the group consisting of (b-1) ethanol, glycerin, 1,3-butylene glycol, and dipropylene glycol; (b-2) bisethoxydiglycol cyclohexanedicarboxylate; (b-3) phenoxyethanol and isopropylmethylphenol; and (b-4) polyquaternium-10. [5] A method for enhancing the fragrance release of a topical composition after application to skin, comprising blending (A) a hydroxy fatty acid or a salt thereof having 10 or more carbon atoms and having a hydroxy group at the 4th or 5th position, with one or more components selected from the group consisting of (b-1) mono- to hexavalent alkyl alcohols, (b-2) amphiphilic esters, (b-3) phenol derivatives, and (b-4) cationic polymers. [6] The method according to [5], wherein component (A) comprises 4-hydroxyundecanoic acid or a salt thereof. [7] The method according to [5] or [6], wherein in the component (B), the component (b-1) comprises: (b-1-1) a monohydric alcohol having 2 carbon atoms; (b-1-2) a monohydric or dihydric alcohol having 3 carbon atoms; (b-1-3) a trihydric alcohol having 3 carbon atoms; or (b-1-4) a monohydric to hexahydric alcohol having 4 to 6 carbon atoms.

[0008] According to the present invention, it is possible to provide a topical composition that maintains its fragrance for a long period of time after application to the skin. Furthermore, the topical composition of the present invention causes a sufficient fragrance to be released after application to the skin, and the fragrance can be maintained for a long period of time.

[0080] Since component (A) in the topical composition is a compound that becomes aromatic when cyclized by lipase, acidic conditions, etc., it is expected that application of the topical composition to the skin will gradually promote cyclization due to the influence of skin lipase, etc., resulting in the release of a fragrance over a long period of time. However, as mentioned above, the present inventors faced the problem that, depending on the composition, the topical composition may not have a strong fragrance and may not be sufficiently effective as a fragrance product. In order to solve this problem, the inventors investigated many ingredients and found that component (B) exhibited a significant effect, thereby completing the method of the present invention.

[0081] The method of the present invention further comprises blending component (B) into a topical composition containing component (A) to obtain the topical composition of the present invention described above, which, when applied to the skin, enables the lactone fragrance to be fully released and the fragrance to be maintained on the skin for a long period of time. Therefore, the explanations given above regarding the topical composition of the present invention can be applied to the explanations of each component that can be used in the method of the present invention, such as component (A), component (B), optional component (C), and other components.

[0082] The present invention will be described in more detail below with reference to examples, but the present invention is not limited to these examples.

[0083] The topical compositions of Reference Example, Comparative Example 1, and Examples 1 to 8 were prepared according to the formulations shown in Table 1 below, using standard methods. 900 μl of each topical composition solution was soaked in cotton and placed in a 100 ml glass screw-cap bottle. The bottle was then capped and left to stand for 5 minutes, after which 1800 μl of artificial sweat (acidic) JIS L0848:2004 was poured over it. The bottle was then capped and left to stand at room temperature under room light for one week, after which the scent of each test product was evaluated based on the average of the scores given by three expert evaluation panelists. The evaluation criteria (scores) were based on the intensity of the lactone odor, with Comparative Example 1 being assigned a score of 0, and the evaluation was conducted on a 6-point scale as shown below.

[0084] (Rating) 5: The lactone odor is very strong compared to Comparative Example 1. 4: The lactone odor is strong compared to Comparative Example 1. 3: The lactone odor is strong compared to Comparative Example 1. 2: The lactone odor is slightly stronger compared to Comparative Example 1. 1: The lactone odor is slightly stronger compared to Comparative Example 1. 0: The lactone odor is equivalent to that of Comparative Example 1.

[0085]

[0086] As shown in Table 1, the Reference Example, in which artificial sweat was not added to a topical composition containing sodium 4-hydroxyundecanoate, was rated as having a stronger lactone odor (score 5) than Comparative Example 1, in which artificial sweat was added.

[0087] In Examples 1 to 8, the addition of ethanol, glycerin, BG (1,3-butylene glycol), DPG (dipropylene glycol), phenoxyethanol, menthol, bisethoxydiglycol cyclohexanedicarboxylate, polyquaternium-10, and IPMP (isopropylmethylphenol) to a topical composition containing sodium 4-hydroxyundecanoate resulted in a stronger fragrance compared to Comparative Example 1. In particular, the topical compositions containing glycerin, BG (1,3-butylene glycol), and phenoxyethanol were evaluated as having a much stronger lactone odor than Comparative Example 1 after one week of storage at room temperature (RT). Furthermore, the addition of ethanol and bisethoxydiglycol cyclohexanedicarboxylate also produced sufficient effects, and the addition of DPG (dipropylene glycol), polyquaternium-10, and IPMP also produced excellent effects. The fragrance-releasing effects and other effects achieved by the topical compositions of these Examples were significantly greater than those of conventional fragrance ingredients. Furthermore, in a formulation (Example 1') in which 0.1% of γ-undecalactone was added to the composition of Example 1 and the amount was adjusted by the water content, the amount of fragrance derived from sodium 4-hydroxyundecanoate increased as the amount of fragrance from γ-undecalactone decreased, demonstrating that the fragrance effect could be maintained for a long time. Furthermore, all of the compositions of the examples were formulations that had a long-lasting fragrance and also had an excellent feel when used.
