Abstract
Description
MULTI COMPONENT CONTAINERFIELD OF TECHNOLOGY
[0001] The present technology relates to a container, assembled from multiple components to hold various product forms including liquid, semi-liquid, or flowable solids products.BACKGROUND
[0002] The concept of a modular container, made up of multiple components, presents a range of advantages. It provides design versatility by offering the ability to employ diverse materials for distinct parts, depending on their specific functions. For instance, certain components may demand enhanced strength, necessitating different materials or multiple layers, while others may not require such robustness. Furthermore, this modular approach allows for the integration of specific functionality within a nested body, such as insulation or a durability-enhancing outer body, along with an inner liner bag, internal rigid structure, or multiple compartments tailored to provide functionalities like protecting the container’s contents or providing an air-less dispensing option effectively. Modular containers have the potential to contribute significantly to sustainable practices by minimizing material consumption. By selectively utilizing materials where needed, these containers not only optimize functionality but also reduce overall material waste, making them eco-friendly options. Modularity can reduce the logistic costs related to shipping through reduced volume by designing the components to be nestable. Recycling is a vital sustainable option, especially for packaging. While employing composite material as layers, it poses challenges in sorting and separating materials for recycling. Hence, having an easily removable liner or a nested package in a modular form would be highly beneficial for disposal and recycling. Modular containers enhance the user experience by offering usability and convenience. They are easy to clean and provide options for various types of closures and fixtures like infusion systems.
[0003] Pulp containers are an attractive alternative to plastic containers, as plastic container waste poses a major environmental problem. Pulp containers require barrier properties to make them suitable for holding liquids, semi-liquids, or flowable solids to prevent the pulp wall from coming into direct contact with the liquid or semi-liquid inside or reduction of the product shelf life due to oxygen, water vapor, or other gas migration.Barrier properties for the pulp wall can be achieved by various methods, including spray coating, lamination of a barrier film lining as the inner layer, and impregnation. Bag-in- the-bottle is gaining importance in pulp container packaging as one of the options for providing barrier properties, enabling it to be suitable for holding various liquids, semiliquids, or flowable solids products and protecting both the pulp and the product inside. A pulp container also requires additional strength in the neck to withstand the pressure of handling, such as dispensing, opening and closing the closure connected to the neck, and to ensure stability when pouring out the contents. Similarly, the container bottom requires additional strength for drop and impact resistance. The above requirements for a pulp container can be achieved through modular design.
[0004] JP2009196644A, EP4211043A1, and US2011220652A1 , incorporated herein by reference, detail the design of modular bottles comprising various components such as the body, base, neck, and closure which, when assembled, form a complete bottle. Many of these designs necessitate specific features, such as flanges and ridges, on both the neck and the outer body for interlocking purposes. Often, these prior art designs incorporate multiple supplementary components to affix the neck to the body, and certain features that risk damaging the outer body, thereby complicating the manufacturing and assembly procedures.
[0005] With a multitude of benefits of modular containers and pulp containers, there is a need for a container design that is simple and effective, simplifying the manufacturing and assembly process.BRIEF SUMMARY
[0006] The present technology relates to a container constructed from several components, characterized by a simple design that facilitates effortless manufacturing and assembly. The container comprises an outer body, a threaded neck, a collar or a fastener ring, a base, and a closure or a dispenser.
[0007] The outer body (1 ) of the bottle comprises an upper body shoulder, a trunk body, an upper opening, and a lower opening. The outer body can be molded as a single piece or as multiple pieces which are joined by any suitable means. There is no requirement for additional features, such as flanges or ridges near the upper opening to attach the other components. The outer body may be uniformly constructed from asingle material or varied materials for each segment, including, but not limited to, thermoplastic resin, biopolymer, composite materials, fiberglass, and fiber pulp. Fiber pulp is preferred for producing eco-friendly bottle. Fiber pulp outer body can be formed by any known methods from wet fiber pulp or molding the blank of dry pulp.
[0008] The neck (2) is a hollow cylindrical part or a ring-like structure with a structured rim on its lower edge and threading on its upper edge. The diameter of the structured rim is greater than that of the upper opening of the outer body. Conversely, the threaded upper edge has a smaller diameter, allowing it to pass through the upper opening of the outer body. The neck can be constructed from any material which is rigid and suitable for injection or compression moulding or additive or subtractive manufacturing, including but not limited to thermoplastic resin, biopolymer, composite materials, fiberglass, and fiber pulp. Biopolymers like Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) can be used for making eco-friendly container.
[0009] The collar (3) is a hollow cylindrical component with a mouth, an upper edge, and a projected portion on its lower edge. This projected portion features inner threads tailored to align with the threads on the neck that are exposed outside the outer body. The upper edge of the collar can be provided with structural features for engaging a closure or dispenser including, but not limited to, threading features compatible with hinged closures or snap-fit methods. The collar may have a skirt-like structure on the lower edge below the projected portion. This skirt smoothly flares on the outer body to provide seamless external finish. The collar can be constructed from any material which is rigid and suitable for injection or compression moulding or additive or subtractive manufacturing, including but not limited to thermoplastic resin, biopolymer, composite materials, fiberglass, and fiber pulp. Biopolymers like Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) can be used for making eco-friendly container. The collar and neck are preferably made of the same material.
[0010] The base (4) has two base pieces that are joined together. In one aspect of the present technology, the inner base piece has reinforcement ridges that add robustness for enhancing strength, drop and impact resistance. The outer base piece, which is attached on the outside of the inner base piece, has the side curved wall of height lesser than that of the wall of inner base such that a part of the wall of the inner base is visible outside. The diameter of the inner base piece is slightly smaller than thatof the lower opening of the outer body, enabling it to fit inside the outer body snugly. The base is attached to the outer body by suitable joining means, including but not limited to adhesive, welding or snap-fit method. The base may have any suitable shape on the lower side which helps the container to have good balance to stand freely on a no surface. Shapes may include but are not limited to flat surface or multiple heel structures. The base can be made of any suitable material, including but not limited to thermoplastic resin, biopolymer, composite materials, fiberglass, and fiber pulp. The outer body and the base can be made of same material. Fiber pulp is preferred for producing an eco-friendly container. The fiber pulp base can be formed by any known115 methods from wet fiber pulp or molding the blank of dry pulp.
[0011] The body can be provided with barrier properties (6) on the inner surface enabling it to be suitable for holding various forms of products including but not limited to liquid, semi-liquid, or flowable solid products and protecting both the outer body and120 the product inside. Barrier properties can be achieved by different methods including but not limited to a liner, coating, immersion, impregnation, and inner nested container like a rigid container or bag-in-bottle. The liner can be attached by various methods, including being laminated to the interior or formed via blow moulding. The coating includes but is not limited to spray emulsion coating. The barrier can be made of any125 suitable material, including but not limited to thermoplastic resin, biopolymer, composite materials, alloys, etc.
[0012] The cylindrical stiffener (9) is a structure with the shape of the interior of the outer body (1 ) has multiple structural ribs on its surface to provide robust strength to the130 outer body and acts as secondary inner body. The cylindrical stiffeners (9) can be formed as a single piece or as multiple pieces (9a, 9b) with or without a base portion. The cylindrical stiffeners (9) can be made of any suitable material including but not limited to thermoplastic resin, biopolymer, composite materials, and fiberglass and fiber pulp. The cylindrical stiffeners (9) can be made of the same material or different135 materials as that of the outer body (1 ). Fiber pulp is preferred for producing an eco- friendly bottle with fiber pulp outer body. Fiber pulp cylindrical stiffeners (9) can be formed by any known methods from wet fiber pulp or molding the blank of dry pulp. Cylindrical stiffeners are made to be held tight against the inner surface of the outer body (1 ) and attached to the inner surface of the outer body (1 ) by any suitable methods140 including but not limited to adhesive means.
[0013] The closure, seal, or a dispenser (5) of the container can be attached to the upper edge of the neck by any suitable means depending on the type of closure, seal, or a dispenser, including but not limited to screw cap, snap-fit or hinged caps, seal, or dispensers like pumps. The closure or dispenser can be provided with a tamper-evident ring. The closure, seal, or the dispenser can be made of any suitable material, including but not limited to thermoplastic resin, biopolymer, composite materials, metal, fiber pulp, etc.
[0014] The assembly of the container described in this present technology involves the following steps. First, the outer body is formed, either as a single molded piece or by combining multiple parts such as the shoulder and trunk body. The neck is then introduced through the lower opening of the outer body. Its threaded upper portion emerges through this opening, allowing the structured rim to sit flush against the periphery of the outer body's upper opening. The outer body's edge adjacent to this upper opening rests on the structured rim. When the collar or a fastening ring is attached, by screwing onto the neck, the portion of the outer body adjacent to the upper opening is compressed between the neck and the collar. The screwing continues until sufficient compression is achieved. This operation effectively secures the connection between the outer body, neck, and collar. This design negates the need for additional structural features such as flanges, ridges, or slots on the outer body for attaching it to the neck or collar. The simple threading alone ensures a secure and efficient attachment. Subsequently, the base is affixed to the outer body's lower opening using appropriate methods. Finally, the closure, seal, or dispenser is attached to the collar's upper edge, thereby sealing the collar's mouth.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0048] FIG 9a and 9b showcase the schematic depiction of the multi-component container in a specific embodiment that utilizes a flexible inner bag (6) as its barrier mechanism. The opening or mouth of this inner bag is securely affixed to the structural rim (either 2d or 8c) of the neck (either 2 or 8). Various attachment methods can be employed to achieve this, including but not limited to adhesive bonding or fusing.
[0049] FIG 10a and 10b depict the schematic depiction of the multi-component container in a different embodiment. This design comprises an outer body (1 ), neck (2), collar (3), bottle base (4), a closure (5), and cylindrical stiffeners (9).Embodiment 1
[0050] In this embodiment, the multiple components of the container (1 ) are assembled either by forming the outer body as a single molded piece or by connecting distinct parts, namely the shoulder (1a) and the trunk body (1 b). The neck (2) is introduced through the lower opening (1d) of the outer body (1 ). The threaded upper portion (2a) of the neck extends through the upper opening (1c), allowing the structured rim (2b) to rest against the periphery of this opening. The edge of the shoulder (1a) is positioned on the structured rim (2b), which results in the external presentation of the threaded upper edge (2a) of the neck. The collar (3) is subsequently screwed onto theneck (2) until the end of its threads, causing the section of the outer body near the upper opening to be firmly clamped between the neck's rim (2b) and the projected section (3c) of the collar. This configuration negates the need for structural elements like flanges or ridges on the outer body (1 ) for its connection to the neck (2) or collar (3). The base (4), comprising inner (4a) and outer (4b) base pieces, is affixed to the lower opening (1 d) of the outer body using methods such as adhesive, welding, or snap-fit. Part of the wall of the inner base piece (4a) remains visible externally when both base components are connected due to the shorter height of the outer base piece's curved wall (4b). The inner base piece (4a) has a wall diameter slightly smaller than the lower opening (1 d), ensuring a snug fit inside the outer body. Lastly, a closure, seal, or dispenser is secured to the collar's upper edge (3b) using suitable methods.Embodiment 2
[0051] In this embodiment, the multi-component container (1 ) is assembled either by molding the outer body as a single piece or by joining distinct sections, such as the shoulder (1 a) and trunk body (1 b). The neck (8) is introduced from the lower opening (1d) of the outer body (1 ). Its threaded upper edge (8b) extends through the upper opening (1c), remaining external to the outer body, while the structured rim (8c) rests against the interior periphery of the upper opening (1 c). The edge of the shoulder (1a) is positioned on this structured rim (8c), displaying the threaded upper edge (8b) of the neck externally. The fastening ring (7), which features inner threads (7c) and a skirt (7b) on its lower edge, is screwed in such a manner that its inner threads (7c) mate with the threads (8d) of the neck's lower edge. This ensures that the segment of the outer body near the upper opening, which rests on the structured rim, is securely sandwiched between the neck's rim (8c) and the fastening ring (7), thus affixing the outer body, neck, and fastening ring together. This configuration eliminates the requirement for structural attributes like flanges or ridges on the outer body (1 ) for its connection to the neck (8) or fastening ring (7), relying solely on threading for attachment. The base (4), comprising inner (4a) and outer (4b) base pieces, is connected to the outer body's lower opening (1 d) using methods such as adhesive, welding, or snap-fit. The outer base piece (4b) is positioned externally to the inner base piece (4a), its shorter curved wall revealing a part of the inner base piece's wall (4a) when both are assembled. The inner base piece (4a) has a wall diameter slightly less than the lower opening (1 d), ensuring a tight fit inside the outer body. A closure, seal, or dispenser is finally attached to the neck's upper edge for sealing purposes.Embodiment 3
[0052] The multi-component (1 ) assembly can be based on the configurations described in either Embodiment 1 or Embodiment 2. The cylindrical stiffener (9) is affixed to the inner surface of the outer body (1 ). The cylindrical stiffener (9) is securely attached to the inner surface, using methods such as adhesive or other suitable means. The attachment of the neck (either 2 or 8), and the collar (3) or fastening ring (7) remains consistent with the methods described in Embodiments 1 and 2. For the base, one of the designs illustrated in FIG 5(a), FIG 6(a), or FIG 6(b) may be used based on specific needs. If the cylindrical stiffeners come with integrated base sections, they can function as the inner base piece, eliminating the necessity for an additional separate base component.Embodiment 4
[0053] Eco-friendly multiple component container (1 ) can be based on the configurations of Embodiment 1 , 2, or 3, the outer body (1 ), cylindrical stiffeners (9), and base (4) are constructed from fiber pulp. Meanwhile, the neck (either 2 or 8), collar (3), closure, seal, or dispenser (5), and any barrier methods utilized are constructed from biopolymers, specifically Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), and biopolymer-based composites.Embodiment 5
[0054] The multiple component container (1 ), as per Embodiment 1 or 2, an inner flexible bag is used as the barrier method (6). This bag's mouth is affixed to the structural rim (either 2d or 8c) of the neck (either 2 or 8) using various potential joining techniques, such as adhesive or welding. In this setup, both the outer body (1 ) and the base (4) are crafted from fiber pulp. Conversely, the neck (either 2 or 8), collar (3), closure, seal, or dispenser (5), and any employed barrier methods are made from a biopolymer, specifically Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), and biopolymer-based composites.
