Description

PACKAGING MATERIAL AND PREPARING METHOD THEREOFFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] This invention relates to a printed substrate comprising a hologram pattern sheet for packages accommodating one or more articles, and a package made of the printed substrate, and a method for producing the printed substrate. The printed substrate provides premiumness appearance.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] Non-fragile, compressible consumer products such as disposable absorbent articles (e.g., diapers and training pants, disposable adult incontinence pants and feminine hygiene pads) are often packaged and sold at retail (i.e., placed on display and for sale in a retail store) in protective packaging, such as boxes, containers, bags, blister packs, cartons, and the like. In addition to being protective, packaging for consumer products is wanted attractive and eye-catching so that consumers might stop and consider purchasing the packaged products. Therefore, packages are desired to provide aesthetic impression of the packages and / or convey the consumers information about the product as well as its basic functions such as protection of articles the package accommodates from external environments.

[0003] In recent years, for decoration purposes, packages and other objects provided with a hologram pattern perceivable from an outer surface side thereof have been proposed. Hologram is a widely used decoration for especially premium category packaging. It is also used to provide protection from counterfeiting, duplicity, and alteration. Hologram may be used as a label to stick on packaging article surface, or a hologram pattern layer is laminated on the full surface of the packaging article.

[0004] JP2013-160900A discloses a film with a hologram pattern comprising a printed layer, a hologram pattern layer, and a vapor deposition layer sequentially formed on a substrate film where a hologram concealing layer is formed on a part of the printed layer, the part of the printed layer having high visible light transmittance and not requiring expression of a hologram pattern.

[0005] Thus, there remains a need for a printed substrate for package conveying aesthetic impression with hologram patterns.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0033] Printed Substrate

[0034] Referring to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, a printed substrate 100 according to the present invention has a top side 102 and a bottom side 104, and comprises a hologram pattern sheet 10 comprising a hologram forming layer 12 comprising a hologram pattern. The top side 012 of the printed substrate comprises a first print region and a second print region. The first print region comprises a first non-hologram area comprising a first non-hologram brightness B1N and a first hologram area comprising a first hologram brightness B1H, and the second print region comprises a second non-hologram area comprising a second non-hologram brightness B2N and a second hologram area comprising a second hologram brightness B2H where the B1N is higher than B2N, and B1H is lower than B2H.

[0035] Referring to FIG. 2, each of regions 110, 120, 130, 140, 150 and 160 comprises a non-hologram area comprising a non-hologram brightness BN and a hologram area comprising a hologram brightness BH.

[0036] In one embodiment, B1N is greater than 128 and B2N is no greater than 128. In another embodiment, both B1N and B2N is greater than 128. In another embodiment, both B1N and B2N are no greater than 128.

[0037] The printed substrate of the present invention may further comprise a third print region comprising a third non-hologram area having a third non-hologram brightness B3N and a third hologram area having a third hologram brightness B3H where wherein the B1N is higher than the B3N, and the B1H is higher than the B3H. In one embodiment, B1N is greater than 128 and B3N is no greater than 128. In another embodiment, both B1N and B3N is greater than 128. In another embodiment, both B1N and B3N are no greater than 128.

[0038] In the present invention, hologram can be agilely adjusted to appear intensively or mildly, or concealed. Together with the print layer, the printed substrate of the present invention can achieve to enhance the brightness of pre-determined areas to be more eye-catching even in lower brightness areas, i.e, darker print areas, of the second print region. The hologram can also enhance the aesthetic effect of the print layers, like the hologram areas of differentiated printed regions.

[0039] As an example, referring to FIG. 1 a printed substrate 100 of the present invention has a top side 102 and a bottom side 104, and comprises a hologram pattern sheet 10 comprising a hologram forming layer 12 which comprises a hologram pattern, a first print layer 20 comprising a first ink composition and a second print layer 30 comprising at least one second ink composition in the order from the bottom side 104 to the top side 102.

[0040] Hologram pattern sheet

[0041] Referring to FIG. 1, the printed substrate 100 according to the present invention comprises a hologram pattern sheet 10. The hologram pattern sheet 10 comprises a hologram forming layer 12 comprising holographic pattern.

[0042] The hologram forming layer 12 can be produced using any conventionally known hologram layer production method. The hologram forming layer 12 may comprise resins such as a thermoplastic resin, an ultraviolet cured resin, and a self-curable resin.

[0043] The hologram pattern may be formed, for example, by a process of creating a three-dimensional image or pattern on a hologram pattern sheet. The embossing process imparts unevenness imperceptible to unaided human eyes on the treated surface of the hologram pattern sheet. Such imperceptible unevenness provides a hologram effect to unaided human eyes under light. In one embodiment, the embossed imperceptible pattern is paralleled and equally spaced fine grooves. Embossing treatment of a precursor hologram pattern sheet is well known in the art and is typically accomplished with a combination of heat and pressure on the precursor hologram pattern sheet by any known method in the art such as using a pair of rolls comprising a counter-rotating embossing male roll and a female roll, and a mother die having a pattern. To obtain a permanent embossed pattern, the precursor hologram pattern sheet film is preferably heated to a temperature between the glass transition temperature and crystalline melting temperature of the resin material, for example, to a temperature of 20℃ lower than the crystalline melting temperature of the resin by a heated embossing male roll and / or a heated female roll, or a heated mother die. The female roll is pressed into contact with the embossing male roll with sufficient pressure to press the hologram pattern sheet into the embossing pattern on the embossing male roll in order to create an embossed surface of the precursor hologram pattern sheet. Alternatively,  the precursor hologram pattern sheet can be heated by a heating equipment to its softening points before being embossed. After embossing, by stopping heating if it is a thermoplastic resin, by irradiating ultraviolet rays if it is a ultraviolet-cured resin, and by leaving till an internal reaction is completed if it is a self-curable material, the precursor hologram pattern sheet is cured, and a hologram pattern is fixed to the surface thereof. The pattern may be any pattern desirable.

[0044] Referring to FIG. 1, the printed substrate 100 according to the present invention may further comprises a protection film layer 40 forming at least part of the top side 102 of the printed substrate. As the protection film layer 40 can be formed on the second print layer 30, or in other words, can form the outermost layer of the printed substrate 100. The protection film layer 40 may comprise polymeric film, varnish coating with transparency for seeing the printed layer through the protection layer. The protection layer may be heat-sealable.

[0045] Still referring to FIG. 1, the holographic pattern sheet 10 may further comprise a substrate layer 14 forming at least part of the bottom side 104 of the printed substrate 100. The substrate layer may be transparent. The substrate layer may be opaque, so that the printed substrate comprises an opacity higher than about 60%, higher than about 70%, higher than about 80%, or higher than about 90%as measured according to Opacity Test from the bottom surface side of the printed substrate. The substrate layer may be heat-sealable.

[0046] The printed substrate according to the present invention may be suitable for a packaging material.

[0047] Process for producing the printed substrate

[0048] In one embodiment, the printed substrate disclosed herein may be produced by providing a hologram pattern sheet comprising a hologram forming layer, the hologram forming layer comprising a first side, a second side facing, and a hologram pattern; disposing a first ink composition on at least part of the first side of the hologram forming layer to dispose a first print layer such a way that the first ink composition is disposed unevenly to generate a first primer area and a second primer area wherein the first primer area and the second primer area have different first ink composition concentration; and disposing at least one second ink composition on a pre-determined area on the first side of the hologram forming layer, wherein the pre-determined area at least partially overlaps with an area where the first ink composition is disposed. The method of making a printed substrate may further comprise applying a protection layer to form at least part of the top side of the printed substrate following to the disposing the second ink composition on a pre-determined area on the first side of the hologram forming layer.

[0049] In another embodiment, the printed substrate disclosed herein may be produced by  providing a protection film layer comprising a first side and an opposite second side; disposing at least one second ink composition on pre-determined area on the second side of the protection film layer; disposing a first ink composition on at least part of the second side of the protecting film to dispose a first print layer such a way that the first ink composition is disposed unevenly to generate a first primer area and a second primer area wherein the first primer area and the second primer area have different first ink composition concentration; and providing a hologram pattern sheet on the side of the second side of the protection film layer and bonding the hologram pattern sheet and the protection film layer. The pre-determined area at least partially overlaps with an area where the first ink composition is disposed.

[0050] In the method of making a printed substrate disclosed herein, the hologram pattern sheet may further comprises a substrate layer which forms at least part of the bottom side of the printed substrate. The substrate layer may be opaque so that the printed substrate has an opacity higher than about 60%, higher than about 70%, higher than about 80%, or higher than about 90%as measured according to Opacity Test from the bottom surface side of the printed substrate. With a certain level of opacity, the printed substrate of the present invention can prevent the see-through the printed substrate which may be perceived as high quality for packaging of items in some application areas.

[0051] First ink composition

[0052] The first ink composition may comprise a binder polymer, a solvent and a white pigment. The first ink composition can be applied on a sheet or layer using any conventionally known appropriate printing process including flexography printing, digital printing, gravure printing, offset printing, etc.

[0053] The first ink composition may comprise at least about 1%a white pigment. Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, lithopone and / or zinc sulfide are examples of white pigment. Titanium dioxide is preferred as white pigment. Titanium dioxide exists in three different crystalline forms, rutile, anatase and brookite. The rutile and anatase forms have the highest refractive index of all white pigments, and provide the highest coverage for ink coatings. Rutile has the greatest opacity, and anatase has the greatest whiteness. The anatase form is most preferred. Pigments are typically subject to modification by grinding and / or surface treatment, for example. Grinding may modify surface area, with higher surface areas generally preferred.

[0054] The binder polymer and / or the solvent in the first ink composition can be appropriately chosen considering selected printing technology. For example, for flexography printing, a binder for the first ink composition may be selected from the group consisting of nitrocellulose polyurethane, nitrocellulose polyamide and combinations thereof, and a solvent may comprise  ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, ethyl acetate.

[0055] The first ink composition, when applied on the hologram pattern layer, can mask or reduce holographic effects from the hologram pattern sheet so that print regions can deliver vivid artwork visual without interference by holographic effect or reduced holographic effect. In the present invention, the first ink composition may be applied unevenly on a substrate such as a hologram pattern sheet so that it can provide various levels of masking effects. With uneven deposition of the first ink composition, it is possible lower brightness areas, i.e, darker print areas exhibits brighter hologram effects than higher brightness areas, i.e, lighter print areas.

[0056] The first ink composition can be applied in a regular pattern, or in irregular pattern on a substrate such as a hologram pattern sheet.

[0057] Second print composition

[0058] The second print composition is an ink composition. Components of the ink may include but are not limited to: a vehicle such as a solvent or water; a colorant such as a pigment or dye; a binder ; and other components which may include but are not limited to wax, crosslinking agents, fixatives, pH control agents, viscosity modifiers, defoamers, dispersants, printing press hygiene control agents, preservatives, and corrosion control agents.

[0059] As used herein, “ink” refers to any composition or components thereof applied to the substrate and which remains thereon in a visible pattern even though components of the ink may evaporate. The components of the ink may be applied to the substrate sequentially or as a mixture. As used herein, “vehicle” refers to the liquid component of the ink utilized to convey the ink to the surface of the substrate. As used herein, “pigment” refers to insoluble color matter used in finely divided dispersed form to impart color to the ink. As used herein, “dye” refers to a colorant soluble in the continuous phase of the ink. As used herein, “binder” refers to the adhesive component of the ink.

[0060] Suitable inks include but are not limited to those inks that are in the form of a liquid at room temperature (i.e. ; a temperature of about 20℃. ) . The inks will preferably utilize water as a vehicle and pigment as a colorant suitable for flexographic printing.

[0061] A binder is generally needed for the ink to adhere to the surface of the substrate. In general, rub-off resistance of the ink increases as adherence of the ink to the surface of the substrate increases.

[0062] TEST METHOD

[0063] 1. Image Acquisition

[0064] Tools: A light booth from X-Rite (Macbeth Lighting) , Model No: JUDGE II (50cm ×60cm × 75cm) with a proper light option such as CIE standard illuminant A, which uses a 20 Watt tungsten halogen lamp to simulate indoor lighting with a color temperature of about 2856K, located on the top inner surface of the light booth.

[0065] Procedure:

[0066] 1) Cut one specimen of a rectangular shape with both the length and width larger than 10 cm from a printed substrate sample.

[0067] 2) Referring to FIG. 8, attach the specimen 810 on the back wall of the light booth 800 in a such a way that the center of the rectangular specimen is located at the height of 30cm from the bottom 802 of the light booth 800. Also attach a ruler next to the specimen on the back wall of the light booth 800 for subsequent distance calibration.

[0068] 3) Mount a digital camera 820 with the resolution of at least 12 megapixels (MP) on a suitable tripod 830. Adjust the tripod position and camera height so that the camera is located at the horizontal distance of about 100 cm from the specimen 810 and aligned perpendicular to the center of the specimen.

[0069] 4) Turn on the lamp of illuminant A of the light booth 800.

[0070] 5) Acquire a color image of the rectangular specimen 810 using the camera 820 under the lighting condition of illuminant A, after performing an auto-focus step.

[0071] 2. Brightness Measurement

[0072] Analyses are performed using image analysis program such as ImageJ software (version 1.52p or above, National Institutes of Health, USA) and equivalent. Open a specimen image in ImageJ. The image needs to be distance-calibrated with an image of the ruler to give an image resolution, e.g., 9.5 pixels per mm, and set the scale according to the image resolution. From the specimen image, select a 10mm x 10mm square-shaped region which has both a non-hologram area and a hologram area based on visual judgement. This region can be selected from a light color print area or a dark color print area, which exhibits weak or intense hologram effect. Save the selected region in the JPEG format.

[0073] Split the color image of the selected region into the hue, saturation and brightness (HSB) images. In the HSB color model, hue describes the attribute of pure color, and saturation characterizes the shade of color, i.e., how much white is added to the pure color, and brightness describes the overall brightness of the color.

[0074] Select the 8-bit brightness image of the selected region and apply the ImageJ plugin “k-means clustering” , which segments the image in the defined number of clusters with similar intensity. The options for k-means clustering used in this analysis are: 3 clusters (i.e., 3 segments  the image will be divided into) ; cluster center tolerance of 0.00010; enable randomization seed (randomization seed: 48) ; show clusters as centroid value; send to results table. Among the three centroid values representing the three clusters respectively, the lowest value is reported to the nearest integer as the brightness level of the non-hologram area, and the highest value is reported to the nearest integer as the brightness level of the hologram area, when the medium brightness value represents the transition area between the non-hologram and hologram areas. If the difference between the lowest and highest brightness values is below 10, select another region on the specimen image for the brightness analysis. If the non-hologram area has the brightness value greater than 128, it is considered a light color print region, otherwise a dark color print region.

[0075] 3. Opacity Measurement

[0076] Opacity values are measured using the method set forth in ISO 6504-3 (2006) .

[0077] Since a sample of polymeric film, rather than a film of applied paint or varnish, is to be measured for opacity, it is unnecessary to prepare a sample including a film of applied paint or varnish as specified in ISO 6504-3 (2006) . Rather, it is only necessary to obtain specimens of the film to be tested and overlay them onto black and white color standards tiles for measurement.

[0078] The tiles used are Ceram Colour Standards Series 11 (CCSSII) 10 cmxl0 cm black and white sleek (gloss) surface color standards ceramic tiles available from Lucideon Limited, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, UK, and / or Lucideon M+P, Schenectady, N. Y.

[0079] The spectrophotometer used to make the required measurements is a SPECTRO-GUIDE 45 / 0 6801, from BYKGardner GmbH, Gerestried, Germany, or equivalent.

[0080] The reported value is the average of the three individual measurements for a test area in a specimen.
