[0023] Details

[0024] Embodiments described herein relate to a vehicle hook that is configured to support an object on top to prevent the object from sliding or spilling within a storage space (e.g., a trunk or compartment of a vehicle). In one embodiment, the vehicle hook includes: a base that is configured to be coupled to a support structure within a trunk of a vehicle; and a rotatable hook that is rotatably coupled to the base and has an open position and a closed position. The rotatable hook includes a hook arm having an end, wherein the end of the hook arm is vertically aligned with the base when the rotatable hook is rotated to the closed position, and the end of the hook arm is angularly spaced from the base when the rotatable hook is rotated to the open position. In some embodiments, the hook arm includes an interlocking protrusion extending from the hook arm, wherein the interlocking protrusion interlocks with the base when the rotatable hook is rotated to the closed position, and the interlocking protrusion is angularly spaced from the base when the rotatable hook is rotated to the open position. As will be described in more detail herein, when in the open position, a bag or other object with a strap can be placed on the hook arm. The rotatable hook can then be rotated to a closed position. In embodiments including an interlock between the interlocking protrusion and the base, the base assists the hook arm in supporting the load of the object. This shared load capacity can increase the load that can be supported on the vehicle hook compared to conventional vehicle hooks lacking such an interlocking configuration.

[0025] As used herein, the "trunk" of a vehicle refers to a primary storage compartment enclosed within or otherwise defined by the body of the vehicle that is used or can be used to transport objects with the vehicle. For example, the trunk may be a typical luggage compartment located at the front or rear of the vehicle, and the trunk compartment may be accessed from the exterior of the vehicle through a door. A trunk may also refer to an open truck bed. Furthermore, unless otherwise specified, the term "trunk" may be used interchangeably with the term "storage space." Although the vehicle hitch is described as being mounted within the storage space of the vehicle, it is contemplated that the vehicle hitch may be mounted anywhere within the vehicle, including the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

[0026] As used herein, the term "longitudinal direction" refers to the + / -X direction shown in the figures. The term "lateral direction" refers to the + / -Y direction shown in the figures that is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction. The term "vertical direction" refers to the + / -Z direction shown in the figures that is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction and the lateral direction.

[0027] Figure 1A and Figure 1B A front view of the vehicle hook 100 in a closed position and a rear view of the vehicle hook 100 are shown, respectively. As shown, the vehicle hook 100 includes a base 110 and a rotatable hook 120 rotatably coupled to the base 110. In some embodiments, the vehicle hook 100 may be provided to an installer as a kit and may include: the base 110, the rotatable hook 120, and an installation kit (not shown) having tools and / or hardware for installing the vehicle hook 100 to a support structure in a trunk of the vehicle 10. In the kit, the rotatable hook 120 is already rotatably coupled to the base 110, or is provided as a separate component that can be assembled to the base 110.

[0028] The base 110 can define a mounting surface 112 for mounting the base 110 to a support structure (eg, a storage space within the vehicle 10). Figures 7 and 8 Thus, the mounting surface 112 may include a hole extending therethrough for mounting the base 110 to a support structure within a vehicle using, for example, threaded fasteners. In other embodiments, the mounting surface 112 may be, for example, bonded or magnetically coupled to the support structure 20 within the vehicle 10. Other conventional coupling techniques are also contemplated and possible.

[0029] Still reference Figure 1A and Figure 1B, and as described above, the rotatable hook 120 is rotatably coupled to the base 110. The base 110 can thereby define a rotation axis 114 of the rotatable hook 120. In the illustrated embodiment, the rotation axis 114 is perpendicular to the mounting surface 112. However, other orientations of the rotation axis 114 relative to the mounting surface 112 are also contemplated and possible. In some embodiments, in order to rotatably couple the base 110 to the rotatable hook 120, a pin 121 (e.g., a bolt) can be passed through the base 110 along the rotation axis 114 and fixed so that the rotatable hook 120 can rotate relative to the base 110.

[0030] The rotatable hook 120 includes a hook arm 122, which extends in a longitudinal direction to the end of the hook arm as shown. When in the closed position, the end of the hook arm 122 can be vertically aligned with the base in a vertical direction. In some embodiments, the interlocking protrusion 130 extends from the hook arm 122 toward the base 110. For example, the interlocking protrusion 130 extends vertically from the hook arm 122 at the end of the hook arm 122 as shown. However, it is contemplated that the interlocking protrusion 130 can also extend from the hook arm 122 at a position other than the end of the hook arm 122. As shown, the interlocking protrusion 130 may include an extension 132 and a locking tab 134 protruding laterally from the extension 132. When in the closed position, as shown in FIG. Figure 1A and Figure 1B As shown, the locking tab 134 extends into the port 115 of the base 110. The port 115 is a recess that is sized and arranged to receive the locking tab 134. The friction between the locking tab 134 and the surface of the port 115 can prevent the rotatable hook 120 from rotating the hook arm 122 away from the closed position until it is moved toward the open position by the user, such as Figure 2 By providing an interlocking protrusion 130 extending from the hook arm 122 toward the base 110, at least a portion of the hook arm 122 can be vertically spaced apart from the base 110, thereby defining a gap between the hook arm 122 and the base 110 when the hook arm 122 is in the closed position.

[0031] Still reference Figure 1A and Figure 1BIn the illustrated embodiment, the hook arm 122 includes a first end 124 and a second end 126, a first interlocking protrusion 131a extends from the first end 124, and a second interlocking protrusion 131b extends from the second end 126. In these embodiments, the rotatable hook 120 is rotatably coupled to the base 110 between the first end 124 and the second end 126 of the hook arm 122. For example, the rotatable hook 120 can be rotatably coupled to the base 110 at a midpoint of the hook arm 122 between the first end 124 and the second end 126. In this embodiment, the first interlocking protrusion 131a interlocks with the base 110 on a first side 116 of the base 110, and the second interlocking protrusion 131b interlocks with the base 110 on a second side 118 of the base 110 opposite the first side 116.

[0032] When in the closed position, Figure 1A and Figure 1B As shown, a portion of the base 110 (e.g., portion 119a and / or portion 119b) extends from the bottom surface 113 of the base 110 between the hook arm 122 and the interlocking protrusion 130 in a vertical direction. For example, the portion 119a of the base 110 may extend between and contact the locking tab 134 of the first interlocking protrusion 131a and the first end 124 of the hook arm 122, and the portion 119b of the base 110 may extend between and contact the locking tab 134 of the second interlocking protrusion 131b and the second end 126 of the hook arm 122. Therefore, when a load is supported on the hook arm 122, a portion of the load is also supported by the portion of the base 110 (e.g., portion 119a and / or portion 119b).

[0033] Figure 2 The rotatable hook 120 is shown rotated to an open position. As shown, when the rotatable hook is rotated to the open position, the end of the rotatable hook 120 can be angularly spaced from the base 110. In an embodiment including an interlocking protrusion, when the rotatable hook 120 is rotated to the open position, the interlocking protrusion 130 is angularly offset from the portions 119a, 119b and angularly spaced from the base 110. This allows objects such as bags with shoulder straps to be hooked on either side of the hook arm 122. In some embodiments, the rotatable hook 120 can be rotated clockwise about the axis 114 in the X / Y plane to a position where the hook arm 122 is positioned approximately 90 degrees relative to the base 110. In other words, the rotatable hook 120 can be rotated in the X / Y plane to a position where the hook arm 122 is perpendicular to the base 110. In other embodiments, the hook arm 122 can be rotated by a greater or lesser amount.

[0034] In some embodiments, the rotatable hook 120 can rotate a full 360 degrees relative to the base 110 and can freely rotate to any angular position relative to the base. In other embodiments, the rotatable hook 120 can rotate a predetermined amount, such as Figure 2 In some embodiments, the rotatable hook 120 can be locked at a specific angular position to prevent the rotatable hook 120 from rotating relative to the base 110. In some embodiments, the rotatable hook 120 can include a plurality of locking positions at predetermined positions relative to the base 110.

[0035] Figure 3 A bottom perspective view of the base 110 is shown in isolation. A base connector 140 for connecting the base 110 to the rotatable hook 120 is shown. The base connector 140 is shown as protruding from the bottom surface 113 of the base 110. However, it is contemplated that the base connector 140 may also be flush with the bottom surface 113 of the base 110. The base connector 140 defines a receiving aperture 142 extending into the base 110. The receiving aperture 142 may have a base stop 144 formed therein. As will be described in more detail, the base stop 144 may provide a limit to the degree of rotation through which the rotatable hook 120 may travel.

[0036] Figure 4 A perspective view of the rotatable hook 120 is shown separately. The rotatable hook 120 may include a hook connector 150 extending from an upper surface 123 of a hook arm 122. The hook connector 150 may include a mating structure 152 configured to be received within a receiving aperture 142 of a base connector 140. The mating structure 152 may include a rotation stop 154. The rotation stop 154 of the hook connector 150 and the base stop 144 of the base connector 140 may limit the degree of rotation 114 of the rotatable hook 120.

[0037] For example, Figure 5 Shown along Figure 1A 1. A cross section of the vehicle hook 100 taken along line AA in FIG. Thus, the rotation stop 154 of the rotatable hook 120 is shown in a closed position, wherein the rotation stop 154 contacts the first wall 146 of the base stop 144. As shown, an open space 170 is located between the second wall 148 of the base stop 144 and the rotation stop 154. Figure 6 Shown along Figure 2 Thus, when the swivel hook 120 is rotated to the open configuration, the swivel stopper 154 can rotate through the open space 170 (eg, Figure 5), until the rotation stopper 154 contacts the second wall 148 of the base stopper 144. Therefore, the rotation 114 of the rotatable hook 120 is limited by the interaction between the base stopper 144 and the rotation stopper 154.

[0038] Figure 7 A vehicle 10 (e.g., a truck) is shown including a trunk (e.g., a truck bed 14) having side walls 16, 18. A support structure 20 extends between the side walls 16, to which a vehicle hitch 100 is mounted. It should be noted that in other embodiments or vehicles, the support structure 20 may also be a wall of the trunk. In some embodiments, there may be multiple vehicle hitches mounted to the support structure 20. In addition, and as described above, the vehicle hitch 100 may be mounted to the support structure within the cab of the vehicle 10.

[0039] Figure 8 A diagram of a vehicle hook 100 mounted to a support structure 20 by one or more fasteners 22 (e.g., one or more bolts, pins, etc.) is shown, wherein a rotatable hook 120 is rotated to an open position. An object 30 having a handle or strap 32 (e.g., a shopping bag, a sports bag, a backpack, etc.) is suspended from a hook arm 122 of the rotatable hook 120 by the handle or strap 32. Once the handle or strap 32 is suspended from the hook arm 122, the rotatable hook 120 can be rotated to a closed position, such as Fig. 9 As described above, when the rotatable hook 120 is rotated to the closed position, the hook arm 122 is spaced apart from the base 110. This leaves room for the handle or strap 32 to remain supported on the hook arm 122 when the rotatable hook 120 is rotated to the closed position. When in the closed position, the interlocking protrusion 130 engages with the base 110. This enables the rotatable hook 120 to support a greater weight than a vehicle hook 100 without this engagement. That is, the object 30 is supported by both the rotatable hook 120 and the base 110.
